00:00I want to be a fashion icon at the level of Dior, Tom Ford,
00:11the car-electo.
00:12I want to be a household name, but if I'm not having fun,
00:18I don't want to do it.
00:18How's that?
00:21up, man.
00:22I'm really drawn to the vintage feel,
00:25but I add in my elements to create a very sophisticated,
00:30but edgy, modern look.
00:35My name's Janine.
00:36I'm 27 years old, and I'm from Portland, Oregon.
00:39This is so exciting to be in New York.
00:44I've never been here, and I'm kind of dorking out about it
00:47a little bit.
00:48Oh, my God.
00:50Wow.
00:51I like things that are not specific to a time and not
00:56attached to any sort of, like, trend.
00:58I've got this show in Bryant Park.
01:00Oh, my God.
01:03The thought of that almost, like, obviously makes me want to cry.
01:07That would be the beginning of everything.
01:09It would change my life.
01:11Wow.
01:12Hi.
01:13Oh, my God.
01:14Hi, I'm Janine.
01:15How can you listen to me?
01:17I'm an American-trained physical therapist
01:20and an Italian-trained fashion designer.
01:23I work as a physical therapist from 9 to 5,
01:26so I know how body moves and functions.
01:29I'm always searching for the simplest cut
01:32to liberate the body movement.
01:35Hey, Seth.
01:36Ben.
01:37Ben, nice to meet you.
01:38It's the whole place.
01:39Yeah, you don't want that first.
01:41We'll talk about it later.
01:43I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.
01:46Honey, it is hell being black, gay in the ghetto.
01:52Hello.
01:53Hey.
01:54Hey.
01:55Wow, that's quite a suitcase.
01:56Honey, I brought Georgia with me.
01:58I'm Anthony.
01:59My ultimate goal is to be one of the gown designers
02:02for Miss USA and Miss Universe.
02:04I don't really care for Miss America,
02:06but I feel like if life has called me for such a time as now,
02:09then Anthony needs to rise to the occasion, period.
02:14I'm Jay.
02:15I'm 31, and I'm from San Francisco.
02:18My design aesthetic is very eclectic.
02:21I like things to be dramatic.
02:23I don't want to make a lot of money.
02:24I don't want to be a millionaire.
02:26It's about doing what I love.
02:28Which bed is broken?
02:29The first one.
02:30Jay, that's your bed, so not so special.
02:32I'm just kidding.
02:33It's amongst the four of us,
02:34so I think I should be fine there.
02:36I'm 180.
02:37I'm 145.
02:38I'm 152.
02:40And I'm thirsty.
02:43Hi!
02:44You're welcome.
02:45You're welcome, Kamala.
02:46I had a complete different career before this,
02:49so the last few years have been my main starting point for fashion.
02:53I worked in advertising and went as far as I could with it.
02:57I got to the top position that I wanted,
02:59and then I was like, okay, more challenge.
03:02What's new?
03:03I have my own small design business
03:05where I do custom work for private clients.
03:07I'm totally a type A personality.
03:09I like to be at the top constantly.
03:12Oh!
03:13Hi!
03:14My name's Anna.
03:15Oh, wow.
03:16I can't believe it.
03:18I'm kind of an animal when it comes to competition.
03:20I'll do anything to win.
03:22I recently have started to try taking designs that may be a pretty dress or a pretty cocktail coat
03:27and hand painting on them, splatter painting on them.
03:30I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty.
03:33Hey!
03:34Jesse.
03:35I'm Jesse.
03:36I'm Jesse Lenore.
03:37I'm 24 years old from Orlando, Florida.
03:39I actually was an actor.
03:41I work at Disney World.
03:43I worked there as a pirate.
03:44Sort of the most famous pirate you could probably think of.
03:47But along the way, learning to be an actor, I learned how to sew,
03:50and I then expanded upon that and taught myself how to design.
03:54I'm about to talk to you.
03:55You know, we gotta stick together.
03:56Yeah, exactly.
03:57I took a little detour from fashion design, and for the last 12 to 13 years,
04:03I've been a costume designer, mostly for television and film.
04:07I actually think that my experience has made me see fashion from different angles.
04:13I feel so ready to show the world what I can do.
04:16How are you?
04:17Good, how are you?
04:18I'm Maya.
04:19I like fashion that takes risks.
04:20When I was in high school, I was really inspired by punk rock.
04:23and rock and roll.
04:25I do collect vinyl.
04:26I love music.
04:27Music and fashion go hand in hand.
04:30I like your haircut.
04:31High five for bangs.
04:32High five.
04:33I didn't know my little sister was gonna be on the show.
04:34Really?
04:36I'm Maya.
04:37Nice to meet you.
04:38Hi.
04:39Christiane.
04:40So nice.
04:41I know.
04:42It smells good, too.
04:44My name's Jesus.
04:45I'm 21 years old.
04:47I am young, but I'm ready for it because I am very confident,
04:50and I feel like I'm a very talented person.
04:52Hey.
04:53Hey.
04:54What's up?
04:55I think I have a really, really big sense of imagination
04:57that's guiding me towards being a great designer.
04:59What's your specialty?
05:00Evening and couture.
05:01Cool.
05:02So you guys better watch out.
05:06Bring it on.
05:07Hey.
05:08Hey.
05:09Hi.
05:10My name is Emilio.
05:11What's your name?
05:12I'm Jonathan.
05:13Emilio.
05:14I'm going to teach you a Spanish.
05:15My name is Amy Sarabi.
05:16I'm 25 years old from Oakland, California.
05:17Hi.
05:18Hi.
05:19Hi.
05:20I think that my Iranian background has definitely affected my design aesthetic.
05:21The visual motifs and things are always around my house, but I really love innovation.
05:35And I like being different.
05:36Dear designers, welcome to New York and to Project Runway.
05:41I look forward to meeting all of you.
05:43So please join Tim and me on the rooftop for a celebratory toast.
05:48Hi.
05:49You're supposed to read that in German.
05:51In German.
05:52In German.
05:53All of a sudden it's happening.
05:55Project Runway's starting.
05:57Hi everybody.
05:58Welcome to Project Runway.
06:02As you can see, we have returned to our original New York home, the Atlas, Gotham's luxury apartment
06:08building here in Manhattan's fashion district.
06:10And now I would like to introduce you to the one and only Tim Gunn.
06:15He's the Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne.
06:20And he will be your mentor during your time here on Project Runway.
06:24Welcome designers.
06:25Never before have we had a group of designers who possess such a strong spirit of innovation,
06:29so many different creative points of view, and who know how to create clothes that can navigate the real world.
06:35And we will see a lot of each other because we'll be together in the workroom at Parsons, the new school for design.
06:40It will be hard and you will have to work a lot.
06:44So before we get started, let's have a little champagne.
06:47And I'm a little pregnant, so I'm going to have a little apple cider.
06:51Come on.
06:52Come forward, everybody.
06:53Come forward, grab a glass.
06:54I'm Anthony.
06:55Anthony.
06:56It's the lady.
06:57Yeah.
06:58Chicago.
06:59Chicago.
07:00But originally from China.
07:01What's this down here?
07:02That's lower Manhattan.
07:03And this is the crazy...
07:05That's the Empire State Building?
07:07Yeah.
07:08Oh my God.
07:09My name is Emilio Sosa.
07:10I am 43 years old and I am from New York City.
07:12See, this used to be my town too.
07:14Yes, I'm representing.
07:15Yeah.
07:16I ended up working in costumes because I needed a job, but I'm still designing fashion.
07:21It just happens to fit the framework of the show that I'm working in.
07:25It's great to design beautiful showstoppers, but my goal is to have my clothing on people's
07:32back that I ride the subway with.
07:34And what's your style like?
07:35I went to school for comic book illustrations, so the idea of armor and all that.
07:42My style is not always, like, extremely feminine and pretty.
07:45I still have that kind of comic book sensibility.
07:48I like to see somebody evolve into another personality when they put something on of mine.
07:52I use a lot of textures, a lot of layers, a lot of colors.
07:55I lived in the Ivory Coast for about 21 years.
07:59It's a place where color is 24-7.
08:02Making these women look beautiful.
08:04I have received an award for best of couture.
08:07I've had a few dresses worn on the red carpet very recently.
08:11I mean, I'm good.
08:15What about you?
08:16I would say that I sort of define myself as an artist and I'm working in the direction of fashion design.
08:21I just spent four years at the Rhode Island School of Design studying printmaking.
08:25It taught me to scrutinize my work and it taught me to have a really clear design process.
08:30I am so excited to get started.
08:32Would you all please gather around?
08:33I just want to start now.
08:35I want to start.
08:36Tomorrow morning, you will meet me in Central Park and learn the details of your first challenge.
08:43Cheers!
08:44Cheers!
08:45Cheers!
08:46So we arrive at Central Park and we see tons and tons of fabrics laying around.
09:06And I'm thinking to myself, Lord have mercy.
09:09Mood Fabrics has come out here and hanged our fabrics to dry.
09:12Good morning, designers, and welcome to Central Park.
09:14Good morning!
09:15As you look around, you'll see that Mood Fabrics has generously donated hundreds of yards of textiles and myriad colors, textures and patterns.
09:24And as beautiful as the textiles are, they are missing something.
09:28And that something is you, your vision.
09:32For this first challenge, it's critically important that your look embody who you are as a designer.
09:37We get to design our own thing that represents us.
09:41When I say go, you will have three minutes to gather as much fabric as you can.
09:46And then I'm going to take you to the work room at Parsons.
09:49Oh, smack.
09:51Three minutes.
09:52Mad Dash.
09:53Grab it.
09:54Ready, set, go!
09:58Tim says go, and we are like fat people at an open buffet in Vegas.
10:06You can't stop anyone.
10:09I automatically thought, okay, go for the colors, because I'm all about colors.
10:15All right, designers, time is up.
10:21I need you to gather around here.
10:23As you know, in fashion, an editing eye is critically important, and I'm giving you your first opportunity to edit.
10:31Out of all these fabrics that you've gathered, you were to select five to take back to the work room. Edit away.
10:37Oh, no, I have to pick one to give up? No, I don't want to give anything up. What if I need that one? That's like, it's like your leg. You don't want to cut it off.
10:45Everybody, you have two minutes. Two minutes to finish editing.
10:47Oh, my God, I like your fabric.
10:49I think I grabbed all the ugliest fabric among the group.
10:53Oh, no!
10:54I have no idea. No idea.
10:58We have less than a minute.
10:59One, two.
11:00These are ones that you're taking?
11:01Yeah.
11:02Okay, you need to unfurl it, too, because it has to go into your mood bag.
11:05It doesn't wrap.
11:06It doesn't wrap.
11:07Designers, you have 30 seconds remaining.
11:09I don't know how to do this.
11:11It doesn't fall.
11:12Go pink, go pink, go pink.
11:15King.
11:16King.
11:17Oh.
11:20All right, designers, let me take you to the work room.
11:23Follow me.
11:24The first challenge, if you don't take your vision and shove it in the judge's face right down their throat and say, this is who I am, I think you might be in trouble.
11:34Coming up on Project Runway.
11:37Oh.
11:38Now, are you doing a whole new dress right now?
11:40I can't send it down the runway.
11:41We've never had anyone just not finish.
11:44I'm scared that this could be really devastating.
11:58Are we neighbors?
11:59We are neighbors.
12:00Welcome home.
12:02Hi, everybody.
12:03Hi.
12:04So you found your space.
12:07And next door is the Brother sewing room, which is fully equipped with Brother sewing machines.
12:12I want you to know that you have until midnight tonight and a little bit of time tomorrow to finish your look.
12:18And I'm very excited to introduce the HP TouchSmart notebooks.
12:22There's one for each of you.
12:23This new technology will allow you to work in a creative and innovative way that's greatly enhanced from a regular sketchbook.
12:29So if you choose to use them, please do.
12:32For this first challenge, we've pre-assigned a model for each of you.
12:35And that card contains her measurements.
12:37This will be very important to your look.
12:39And the winner of this challenge will have immunity and cannot be eliminated in the next challenge.
12:47This is such an important challenge because this is your only chance to show the judges what makes you different from the other designers.
12:59So I am going over the top, full Seth Aaron, in your face, day one. Hopefully it pays off.
13:08My design is a black cocktail dress with an inset panel of angled pleats and then a pleated cap sleeve.
13:16Did you get fabrics that you liked?
13:18I got one piece that I liked, so I'm just using that.
13:22Then I know how to make your form stop rolling.
13:25My first design, color, style, and fit.
13:29I think this one little dress encompasses all that.
13:33My designs look the best if you put on a human body.
13:37So why not just drape fabric on myself?
13:40Oh, I love this mirror, really. It makes me look so nice.
13:44I kind of anticipated my working style would be different than normal approach.
13:55Right now, I think the major challenges people are having is with the time constraint.
14:00Is everyone in the sewing room?
14:02Everyone sewing.
14:03Shut up. Don't even remind me.
14:13Hi, everybody. Designers, I'm sending in your models.
14:16I'm not even halfway through the pieces that I'm working on.
14:19You will have 30 minutes with them, so use your time well, okay?
14:23Time to make it work.
14:27They're so cute.
14:29They're too tight.
14:30That's okay. Easy feet.
14:31This would be up over the bust here.
14:37Oh, this is so mean.
14:40I really love it.
14:41The train's gonna be that long.
14:42After I fit Brittany, I realized that she was 5'11", so I need to make this long.
14:47I'm so excited.
14:49Kind of like a mermaid-styled evening gown with a chiffon train.
14:53We're definitely gonna win.
14:55Oh, my God.
14:56This thing is so big.
14:59I think I like it shorter, actually.
15:01Happy tomorrow's gonna be good.
15:04I wanna see you.
15:05Okie dokie.
15:06I gotta get to work.
15:07So, enough about sewing.
15:09Let's talk about the important stuff.
15:11What are you guys gonna wear to the runway show tomorrow?
15:13What are you wearing?
15:14Something that I can look dignified going home in.
15:17Oh, no.
15:19That's a lot of pins.
15:20Well, because I applicate each stripe.
15:25If I have the time, I'll do a jacket that'll come over this, so the red will peek out in the same shape with the jacket.
15:31Hi, everybody.
15:32Hi.
15:33Hi.
15:34Just here to check in with you and see how you're doing.
15:36Hi, Kristen.
15:37Hi, Tim.
15:38Talk to me.
15:39Okay, so for my look, I decided to go with the dress, because that's what I do best.
15:44My only concern is that, is it out there enough?
15:48You need to ask yourself whether not having something hurts it.
15:53From my point of view, finish this impeccably and stand there with confidence.
15:59Okay.
16:00All right, thank you.
16:02Ping?
16:03Yes?
16:04Are you cold?
16:05No.
16:06You're all enshrouded.
16:08Well, these are the fabric I got.
16:11This is your look?
16:12Yes.
16:13Tell me why this is on you.
16:14I do things on me, because I don't have dress form at home.
16:17Doing it on you, does it allow you to be objective?
16:20I would only give it to customers whatever I want to wear myself.
16:25All right.
16:26Not bad, no.
16:27All right, go, go, go.
16:30Seth Aaron, how confident are you in this zipper?
16:33I love to see zippers.
16:35Does it become cartoonish?
16:37This challenge is to represent who is Seth Aaron.
16:41Yeah.
16:42That's what I'm doing.
16:43All right, go for it.
16:44All right.
16:45Hi, Tim.
16:46Talk to me.
16:47Well, this is my little black dress that I'm working on.
16:51Here's my difficulty.
16:53This fabric shows everything.
16:56Yeah.
16:57I'm so distracted by how it puckers and how those seams don't lay flat.
17:03Yeah.
17:04My heart is just sinking slowly.
17:07Just clean it up as much as you can.
17:09At this point, I'm realizing I can't send it down the runway.
17:12I cannot send it down the runway.
17:14But I think I can fix it.
17:16I'm going to fix this.
17:17I have to fix this.
17:19So how's Anthony doing?
17:22Anthony's wonderfully well.
17:24Talk to me.
17:25I didn't want to do just an all over green floor print dress,
17:29but none of this is working for me.
17:31It's not working for me either.
17:32It's not working for me at all.
17:34This is the starring actress.
17:36Why would you introduce a poor supporting player?
17:40Why'd I introduce her?
17:41I just introduced her to you.
17:43But obviously, you just decided you don't want to meet her,
17:45so we're going to put her out.
17:47Thanks, Anthony.
17:49It was better than I thought it would.
17:51Hello, Jesus.
17:52Was this a need to put the seam in here,
17:55or was this a design plan?
17:57Um, it was a need.
17:58A need.
17:59Because originally it was going to be short.
18:01Oh, I see.
18:02And then when I saw my motto, I said,
18:04I'm going to make it into, like, kind of like a mermaid long train dress.
18:09I'm just looking at how it's constructed,
18:11and I find it disturbing.
18:13It was, in a manner of speaking, it was an afterthought.
18:15Yeah.
18:16I'm not confident that it wouldn't have been just as successful,
18:19if not more, as a short dress.
18:21It doesn't bother me at all.
18:22All right.
18:23Make it work.
18:24All right.
18:26Emilio.
18:27I wanted to create an ombre, but using fabric.
18:31All right.
18:32I have one comment to make, and I think this is fabulously done.
18:35Yeah.
18:36I'm just looking at a top that's still very unfinished.
18:39We've never had anyone in the whole history of the show just not finish.
18:45Ever.
18:46My knee's buckled.
18:48My skirt is still in pieces on the table.
18:51All right, designers.
18:52I'm thrilled that you're being as ambitious as you're being.
18:54At the same time, some of you may have to recalibrate your ambitions according to the timeframe,
18:59because I am seriously worried about it.
19:03So, for the rest of the night, sew, cut, drape, do whatever you need to do to finish this.
19:10Have a good night.
19:11I'll see you tomorrow.
19:17Oh, honey.
19:18This is the last thing I can handle right now.
19:20I just want to be finished.
19:21This is, like, high level of stress.
19:23I think my dress very well could get me the win.
19:28I'm just crossing my fingers that it fits perfectly when Kelly tries it on tomorrow.
19:33I'm seeing these amazing pieces that people have spent all day doing and less than two hours to go.
19:39I started over.
19:40Completely.
19:41Now, are you doing a whole new dress right now?
19:43Yeah.
19:44I'm hoping that Janine is going to pull some tricks out of her big old designer bag, because I'm scared that this could be really devastating.
19:57I only have the top half of the dress done.
20:00Come on, guys.
20:01Time to go.
20:02Why?
20:03Why?
20:04Why me?
20:05Coming up on Project Runway.
20:10Designers, in five minutes, we're walking down to the runway.
20:15For some reason, my paper won't go home.
20:18My work is just so different.
20:21Ping may go home.
20:23It's a mix of anticipation, fear, excitement, uncertainty, exhaustion.
20:40I could see some panic in people's face.
20:43Do as much as you can until, they say, runway time.
20:48I'm thinking about getting as much done as possible, because I know there's still a lot to do, having restarted my entire design at the last minute.
20:58I have not even put my garment on my model yet.
21:03That's my biggest concern right now.
21:08It's not like crazy chiffon that's going to be ridiculous.
21:11Yeah.
21:12I would take the time to roll it in.
21:13Yeah.
21:14Because it looks messy.
21:15I do think Christiane could have pushed her design a little further.
21:19Her lack of construction skills are really going to be detrimental to her.
21:23You have time, you know?
21:26My work is just so different.
21:28The judges may either like it or hate it.
21:32Ping's outfit is very Ping.
21:36Ping may go home.
21:40Good morning, everyone.
21:41Good morning.
21:42Good morning.
21:43Good morning.
21:44Designers, it's your first runway day.
21:46This is a very exciting moment.
21:48Yes, yes.
21:49It's exciting and it's a little terrifying at the same time.
21:52I'm about to send in your models.
21:54You will have an hour to send them to the Garnier Hair Salon in the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room.
21:58Okay?
21:59I want you all to use the bluefly.com haul very thoughtfully, very strategically.
22:04It's the source for your accessories.
22:06All right.
22:07I'm sending in your models.
22:08Woo!
22:09Woo!
22:10Woo!
22:11Woo!
22:12Hi!
22:13Hello!
22:14How are you?
22:15How are you doing?
22:16Good.
22:17I'm taking it all off.
22:19This dress is so hot.
22:20I know.
22:21It's insane.
22:22Brittany comes in and I put her in the dress and she looks fabulous and my first feeling
22:27is I'm going to be one of the top three.
22:32So here's the top and this is the skirt.
22:36Well, I'm nervous because there's a great deal of work to be done to my garment.
22:43Time, let's just say time is not officially on my side.
22:48This dress is missing.
22:50I'm really, really anxious to see what the judges will say about the designs.
22:55I've been feeling pretty good about my dress.
22:58How are you feeling?
22:59Feeling good?
23:00Yeah, I'm feeling good now that I like saw it on her and it fits.
23:05Miraculously, the dress, it's really, really good.
23:10Minor adjustments and we're good to go.
23:14Oh, I'm going off.
23:16I'm thinking I will finish it on time.
23:20The little pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel has been blooming over the past few
23:24hours and I'm seeing her coming down the runway in a finished look and I'm very happy with that.
23:31Bang like needles.
23:34They're just up on top of her head.
23:37I think we should just go with a plastic, clean, beautiful, smoky eye.
23:44Designers and models, in five minutes we're walking down to the runway.
23:56Five minutes.
23:57All right.
23:58Is that okay?
23:59Oh, absolutely.
24:00Yeah.
24:01My garment's complete.
24:02It's on.
24:03I'm feeling good.
24:04Could I win?
24:05Absolutely.
24:06For some reason, my zipper won't go up.
24:11The tensions I have, I'm sweating like a Baptist preacher.
24:14The reality of it is I still have to produce a garment and right now failure is not an option.
24:20Designers and models, this is it.
24:23Your first runway show.
24:25This first one is going to be an eye opener for everyone.
24:31It's going to be like a reality check.
24:34It's a record.
24:35Done.
24:37Coming up on Project Runway.
24:40I think it looks like you glued a few different dresses together.
24:44To be honest, I don't know how fashionable it is.
24:47Welcome to the runway.
24:52As you know in fashion, one day you're in and the next day you're out.
24:58The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine.
25:03An opportunity to sell your line on bluefly.com.
25:07A $50,000 technology suite to create, design and run your business from HP and Intel.
25:14And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch your line.
25:19Alright, let's meet the judges.
25:21First we have top American designer Michael Kors.
25:24Hey guys.
25:25Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
25:29And TV personality and designer of House of Harlow 1960,
25:34who will be launching her own apparel line this spring, Nicole Richie.
25:39We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
25:46One of you will be named the winner.
25:48And one of you will be out.
25:50Let's start the show.
25:57My garment looks amazing, smart, unique, thoughtful.
26:01But it wasn't a costume.
26:03It was as perfect as it could get.
26:12The dress looks better than it did in the workroom.
26:15I don't have a doubt in my mind that all the judges gonna look at it and totally get what I'm about.
26:22As Britney is walking down the runway, I get shows if it's her perfect.
26:31And it's a very glamour evening.
26:34I think the chiffon train looks beautiful.
26:37So I'm confident.
26:39I feel this dress represents me as a designer.
26:45It has this futuristic appeal, but also a little bit of retro.
26:48This is a good first impression for the judges.
26:58I definitely felt great about my garment.
27:00It's something that I believe in.
27:02It's me.
27:03It's a Jay Nichols Sario signature.
27:11Sarah walking down the runway is totally amazing.
27:13The pink color of it and the youthful quality of the dress, I think, shows them that I'm happy.
27:26As the dress comes onto the runway, I realize that I hit it right on the head.
27:30Fit, construction, the dress moves like a dream.
27:34It is the perfect dress.
27:39My garment looks great up there on the runway.
27:41The amount of detail that I put into this and the amount of tailoring that I put into this
27:45and the way it fits her, I think, shows that I've got a lot of skill there.
27:48And that's really what my goal was.
27:50It looks fantastic on her and the overall look is really what I designed.
28:02There's no way I would do any changes.
28:09It feels great to see my dress walk down the runway.
28:11I'm hoping to show the judges what my design philosophy is all about.
28:16The draping and the texture and the color that I use.
28:26Seeing my piece come down the runway is really exciting.
28:29It's creative and it's innovative.
28:31Well done for one day's time.
28:33I'm so happy I somehow found it in me to start from the top at the last second
28:42and create something that looked really lovely.
28:46I'm staring at it.
28:55I'm obsessing about every little wrinkle in it.
28:58But for me, the most important thing was the silhouette.
29:01And I think that that definitely reflected me as a designer.
29:09My dress gives some voice to who I am as a designer.
29:13I love the actual fabric, the colors.
29:16I like the volume on the side.
29:18I like all of those aspects about my dress.
29:24I feel pretty proud of myself, actually,
29:26considering that I'm new to creating rapidly.
29:30So I feel like I did pretty well.
29:39It still feels like a dream to be here.
29:41I feel very accomplished to be here with my peers,
29:44even though I do want to beat them.
29:54If I call your name, please step forward.
29:57Amy.
29:59Anna.
30:02Ben.
30:04Janine.
30:06Jay.
30:08Jesse.
30:10Jonathan.
30:11Please step forward.
30:12Maya.
30:15Mila.
30:17Pamela.
30:19If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:23Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:27You can leave the runway.
30:30The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:41Let's bring out your models.
30:51I want to start with Anthony.
30:53Tell us about your look.
30:54I just wanted to do a different shape,
30:55and I want to do something that was very functional and very fun and feminine.
30:59I personally like the bottom part of it, but I don't love the top part of it.
31:05I think it looks like you glued a few different dresses together.
31:09And frankly, not a lot of women are going to wear that appendage on their hips.
31:13I mean, she could go to a garden party and steal champagne bottles.
31:16My biggest problem is that the fabric and the silhouette, they're very conflicting.
31:23I did write down, it doesn't fit so great in the back.
31:27It's a little too short and a little too tight.
31:30It's not straight and over the butt, it makes these bubbles, right?
31:32Right.
31:33But I actually do think that it's very beautiful, and I think you did really great under pressure.
31:37Thank you. I actually wasn't expecting you all were actually very nice.
31:41I thought I was literally going to disintegrate standing here.
31:43So thank you. I survived your words. Thank you.
31:47Seth Aaron, tell us about your look.
31:50I call this Little Tokyo.
31:52She's going to the MTV Music Awards.
31:54She's rocking it new wave, punk style.
31:58I think that from head to toe, you really made everything work.
32:02You understand who you're aiming towards and you really go for it.
32:06And I think that you really committed.
32:08I think that it's fun, shows a point of view.
32:11Can you turn around?
32:12Mm-hmm.
32:13I really appreciated the back. I actually loved it.
32:15I love the back.
32:17I actually think a lot of young girls would love to own that dress.
32:20It's pretty commercial.
32:22Ping, tell us about your look.
32:25My garment looks just like a fabric if you just hang on the hanger.
32:30When you move, the shape changes, the form changes.
32:33I have to say, when your model walked out, she immediately got my attention.
32:39You could create a whole fashion show around this.
32:41This was really a show within itself.
32:43And it's definitely something that I would wear. I love it.
32:46Oh, thank you.
32:47Clothes have to have some degree of hanger appeal.
32:51When you're presenting your clothes, you're presenting it here on a model that looks slightly uncomfortable with your clothes.
32:58No.
32:59I think, though, this is a great opening project. It really shows who you are as a designer and what you believe in.
33:07Jesus, tell us about your look.
33:09Okay, as you can see, my specialty is evening gown. The fabric choice, I think, was perfect.
33:14I wanted to show the women's body, and my model is beautiful, so it worked perfect.
33:19To be honest, I don't know how fashionable it is.
33:21I don't know. It's like a huge crocodile trunk exploded on an evening gown.
33:26I think it's unwieldy, and it's not sexy.
33:30It looks almost as if it was short, and then you decided to make it long, because it has this very unflattering seam for it to be a mini-scot.
33:38It was supposed to be originally short.
33:41Aha! She looks like a Hershey chocolate bar.
33:45She needs some lightness to her.
33:48I think that it has potential to be a really great dress if you put a little bit more thought into it.
33:57Christiane, tell us about your look.
34:00I like to make sophisticated, elegant, sexy dresses, lots of layers and textures to really complement a woman's body.
34:07I really like the draping that you have on this dress, but I'm not really crazy about this combination of fabrics.
34:16I think you can see every single detail, including the hem that is not completely finished.
34:22I think there's something about drapery that should look like she just tossed a scarf on.
34:27You've got that going on on the shoulder beautifully, and then all of a sudden, it turns around and it's like, oh, ran out of fabric and it went into the scene.
34:35Emilio!
34:36What I wanted to create was a very young, youthful cocktail dress. I wanted to showcase technical knowledge with construction.
34:45I like that it's deceptively simple.
34:48Yeah, exactly.
34:49To someone who wouldn't really know any better.
34:52Yes.
34:53But then on second inspection, you realize just how much went into it.
34:58You made this kind of weaving.
34:59Yes.
35:00It was four layers, and then I attached the skirt and then segmented the purple onto that.
35:06I appreciate very much your technical work that you've done in this dress, and I think speaking about hanger appeal, I am sure this dress looks great hanging as well.
35:19I love that full skirt. It's very fun and sexy at the same time. I think that it was a great, great choice.
35:28Okay, we've heard what you had to say. We're going to have a little chat, and then we'll call you back. You can leave the runway. Thank you.
35:37Let's start with Anthony.
35:43I thought there was a problem between the choice of fabric and the silhouette. There was a contradiction there.
35:51It was kind of like all these, you know, different notes that never came together as a chord.
35:58Well, let's move on to Christian, which also was a bit unsophisticated.
36:03Mm-hmm.
36:04From the color to the shape.
36:06Sewn terribly.
36:07Yes.
36:08The hem from hell, the puckering.
36:09The hem. The hem was the worst.
36:10I think that you have to have a theme. You have to have a vibe and a feeling.
36:13Story.
36:14And there was just nothing.
36:15Let's move on to Jesus. I actually kind of liked the dress.
36:23There is a sense of the unexpected in his design.
36:26I just looked at it and it was like, kind of like all the cliches of like, wow, isn't that glamorous? You know, ooh, she's glamorous.
36:34In what country, in what year?
36:36Well, I was just going to say, in a lounge in Las Vegas in 1972.
36:40You know?
36:41That would have been glamorous, but not now.
36:46Let's move on to the ones that we did like. Let's start with Seth Aaron.
36:51It was youthful and at the same time, I think a lot of girls would want to wear that dress.
36:55I'm also intrigued. I want to know more what he's all about.
36:58And he was one of the few that really gave her a head to toe look.
37:02I mean, the hair worked, the makeup worked, you know, the whole thing.
37:10Okay, let's move on to Emilio. Also a beautiful dress.
37:14I love that cut of a skirt. I thought it was really fun and sexy and girly.
37:20When it's that short and when it's that flowy, for me, it's too sweet.
37:24But I think the choice of fabric was really smart.
37:27You know, all that work and all that technique look very special and very expensive.
37:36Okay, let's move on to Ping. Very unusual.
37:39But I have to say, when her model turned the corner, you were taken away.
37:45You were transported. It was something else.
37:48This was my favorite look. The challenge was to express who she was, and that's who she is.
37:54So, did we make our decision?
38:00All right, let's bring them back out.
38:07The six of you represent the best and the worst.
38:11One of you will be named the winner.
38:14And one of you will be out.
38:16Ping.
38:17Yes?
38:18You're safe.
38:19Well done.
38:20You're in. You can leave the runway.
38:22Emilio.
38:23Yes?
38:24Emilio.
38:25Yes?
38:26Yes?
38:27We loved your fun, flirty, and well-constructed dress.
38:29Great.
38:32You're in.
38:33You're in.
38:34You can leave the runway.
38:36Emilio.
38:37Yes?
38:38Emilio.
38:39Yes?
38:40Yes?
38:41We loved your fun, flirty, and well-constructed dress.
38:43Thank you very much.
38:44It was innovative and showed us who you are as a designer.
38:45Yes.
38:46Congratulations.
38:47Yes.
38:48You are the winner of this challenge.
38:49Yes.
38:52Thank you very much.
38:53It was innovative and showed us who you are as a designer.
38:57Yes.
38:58Congratulations.
38:59Yes.
39:00You are the winner of this challenge.
39:02Yes.
39:04You can leave the runway.
39:05Thank you very much, everyone.
39:06Good luck.
39:07Yes.
39:08I think winning the first challenge, what it does, it throws down the gauntlet for the other
39:18winners, but it also puts a target on my back.
39:21Being the first one tells everyone, this is the guy to watch for.
39:29Seth Aaron.
39:30Well done.
39:31You're in.
39:32You can leave the runway.
39:38Anthony.
39:39Anthony, you're in.
39:41You can leave the runway.
39:43You said in.
39:46I said in before I changed my mind to on Vida Zane.
39:49Leave the runway.
39:50Ooh.
39:51Real change is 30.
39:55Christian, Jesus, one of you will be out.
39:59Christian, we had issues with your fabric choice and your construction ability, even
40:05on a simple hem.
40:07And more importantly, we still have no idea who you are as a designer.
40:11Jesus, we are concerned about your taste level.
40:16This was the wrong garment.
40:18And the wrong fabric.
40:20Jesus, unfortunately, one has to go.
40:24Mm-hmm.
40:26But it's not you.
40:28Hey.
40:30You're in.
40:31You can leave the runway.
40:32You're in.
40:33You can leave the runway.
40:34I think you're right.
40:35I'm sorry, Christian.
40:36That means you're out.
40:37I'll say the same.
40:38Good luck.
40:40Thanks.
40:41Oh, sweetie.
40:42Oh.
40:43Bye.
40:44Bye.
40:46I'm feeling pretty disappointed.
40:47Hope to the same.
40:49Good luck here.
40:51Thanks.
41:00Guys.
41:01Wow, sweetie.
41:03Bye.
41:05I'm feeling pretty disappointed.
41:07I did not think that my dress was a worse out there,
41:10that I would be eliminated.
41:12Christine.
41:13Yes.
41:14You have worked so hard to get here.
41:15I know.
41:16But the deepest regret that I tell you,
41:17that you have to go to the workroom and clean up your space.
41:19Okay?
41:20Me being eliminated doesn't mean anything at all
41:23when it comes to who I am and where I'm going
41:27and what I'm going to do.
41:28So I took all the positive out of it,
41:31and I met some amazing people.
41:33So I'm really thankful.
