00:00The chance of a lifetime.
00:02The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
00:06An opportunity to sell their line on bluefly.com.
00:09A $50,000 technology suite to create, design and run their business from HP and Intel.
00:15And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch their line.
00:18I was in the bottom three and it definitely means that I have to step it up for this next challenge and prove myself again.
00:31I feel like I've kind of lost myself a little bit.
00:33I'm ready to redeem myself today. Do something, kick ass again.
00:38I'm a little jealous that I haven't won a challenge yet.
00:44And it is at the point now where everybody's won a challenge except for me.
00:48Yeah, it's frustrating for sure.
00:57It's down to only eight of you.
00:59Half of you are gone.
01:02For your next challenge, we want you to get into a New York state of mind.
01:07Tim will meet you in the designer's lounge to fill you in on all of the details.
01:11Good luck, and I'll see you on the runway. Bye!
01:15Bye!
01:16I'm not exactly sure what that hint means, but I'm going to wait until I have all of the details of this particular challenge
01:23before I go trying to flood my mind with unnecessary thoughts.
01:26Designers, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Collier Strong, a consulting makeup artist for L'Oreal Paris.
01:33Designers, for this challenge, you will be using New York City as the point of departure for your design.
01:39Yes!
01:41Yes!
01:42And we're sending you out into the city!
01:44Nice!
01:45You will be going to one of four very distinctive neighborhoods.
01:49These neighborhoods have been selected because of their history, their cultural significance, and frankly, for their impact on fashion.
01:55And they are Chinatown, the East Village, the Upper East Side, and Harlem.
02:02Woohoo!
02:03I feel that I have to win this challenge because I am from New York, and if I don't win this one, it would be a real disappointment for me and for my people.
02:11And I have more exciting news.
02:13You will be working in teams of two.
02:17Please, God Almighty, don't let me be stuck with Mila. Please.
02:23I'm not a huge fan of teams. You never know who you're going to get.
02:27Each team will create two looks, a look for day and a look for evening, and each team will have a budget of $300.
02:35And I will determine the team leaders by selecting your names from our velvet bag.
02:40Oh.
02:41Anthony.
02:43Amy.
02:46Emilio.
02:47Oh, good.
02:49Jay.
02:50Being the last leader to get picked, I know that I'm going to get stuck with whoever's not going to get picked, and I'm scared to death.
02:57So, Anthony, you're first.
03:00Maya.
03:03Amy.
03:04Jonathan.
03:05Yay.
03:07I really wanted to work with her, and I was hoping she wanted to work with me.
03:10Emilio.
03:11I'm going to choose...
03:13Beth.
03:14Hey.
03:16The whole team dynamic is about strategizing.
03:19Jay and Mila don't get along, so it's a win-win situation.
03:23I can't breathe.
03:25My heart's pounding.
03:26Oh.
03:29So, Jay, you're working with Mila.
03:31Wow.
03:32Great.
03:33I've never talked to, and the guy that I don't really like.
03:36He and I have to work together now.
03:39Oh, my God.
03:40I'm stuck with Mila.
03:41All right.
03:42Now, in reverse order, you're going to choose one of the four neighborhoods.
03:45We've decided the East Village.
03:46The East Village?
03:47Yes.
03:48So, Emilio and Seth Aaron.
03:49We choose Harlem.
03:50Harlem?
03:51It's a no-brainer, and I spent a lot of time in Harlem.
03:55So, Amy, you and Jonathan have Chinatown or the Upper East Side?
03:58Upper East Side.
04:00That means that Anthony and Maya have Chinatown.
04:03Collier.
04:04I'm here to help you create makeup looks that fully complement and expand on your designs.
04:08We'll be using L'Oreal's new Studio Secret Professional line that enables all women to get professional results at home.
04:14I'm sending you off to your neighborhoods where you will have 30 minutes to explore and sketch, and then I will meet you at Mood.
04:21And later today, you'll have a consultation with Collier.
04:24So, run off to your neighborhoods.
04:32I'm just happy to be back in my own neighborhood.
04:34The smells, the people, the color.
04:37I'm home.
04:38Harlem is about churches, liquor stores, and fried chicken spots.
04:43Well, I'll do the liquor store and fried chicken.
04:45Our styles are completely different.
04:47This could be a complete disaster.
04:49Or, our two styles could totally just weave together and make something fantastic.
04:54Look at Grandma, look at Grandma.
04:55Where is she?
04:56Where is she?
04:57Here.
04:58See, that's hot.
04:59That's hot.
05:00She is hot.
05:01Look at her shoes.
05:02Look at her shoes.
05:03Yeah.
05:04Oh, you look great.
05:05She's probably like 70 years old when you look.
05:06She's hot.
05:07Tight denim jeans.
05:08The first thing you see when you go to Harlem is that 99.5 of the people are wearing denim.
05:13The denim.
05:14Look at what it is.
05:15The denim's here.
05:16That's where it's at.
05:17This is Harlem.
05:18We should do this for the day and for night.
05:21All that kind of mosaic.
05:23What if we got the pants doing this?
05:26You know, in the color palette we choose, but this effect.
05:28That effect.
05:29Sounds good?
05:30Yeah, I think.
05:31All right.
05:32Well, welcome to Harlem, baby.
05:38When I think of Chinatown, I really think of structure.
05:41Me too.
05:42Me too.
05:43And like the buildings.
05:44There's a lot of red, certainly.
05:45Red, okay.
05:46Walking around in Chinatown, there are so many people just moving.
05:50Jesus.
05:51And the streets are really, really narrow.
05:54Everything's very colorful.
05:56I'm really glad that Anthony chose me as a partner.
05:59We're having fun.
06:00He's making me laugh.
06:01And he's bringing the silly into it.
06:03Sometimes I need a little dose of that.
06:05I know.
06:06Pigs in that window.
06:07What is that?
06:08That's stuck.
06:09Ew.
06:10Ew.
06:11What about these ladders here as a detail for a daytime, like on a jacket?
06:16I think this window alone is just a great source of inspiration.
06:20And even if we did something like this with gold on the inside of them, you know?
06:24The perfect thing that's coming up for me right now.
06:30On the Upper East Side, there is a feeling of high-end or luxury.
06:34The architecture is all very, like, stark and gray.
06:37First thing Amy and I notice is how static of a place it is.
06:41There's almost no movement.
06:43Ah!
06:45Houston, we have a problem.
06:47Her style in Upper East Side might be a little bit of a clash.
06:51See, I feel like it's important to stay true to what type of people are here.
06:56What goes on here?
06:57We thought that a shirt dress is something that someone in Upper East Side might wear on a casual day.
07:02I actually really love this, too.
07:04The brick?
07:05Just the texture of that.
07:07Yeah.
07:08Is this a very Upper East Side?
07:09Yes.
07:10It is?
07:11And for the evening look, we really wanted to use Jonathan's cutaway technique to represent the wrought iron that we saw on the doors and the gates.
07:18Let's get fabrics that are easy to do techniques on, and then we'll work out what the actual technique is.
07:23Okay.
07:26I'm really feeling the graffiti, are you?
07:28I love the texture.
07:30I just have to get over the fact that I don't like her. This challenge is to really test me as a leader to Mila.
07:36I want to do a woman who lives in this neighborhood. She's modern, but appreciates things from the past.
07:41I love the East Village. I understand the East Village. The East Village is kind of rock and roll.
07:46It's kind of gritty here, you know what I mean?
07:48Yeah.
07:49When Jay and I were walking around, we tended to gravitate towards graffiti and industrial textures.
07:55I want to do a look with a jacket and a look with, like, a hot pair of, like, super elaborate pants.
08:01I feel like Jay is a little bit scattered.
08:04I want to use lines to create texture. I want to do a short, like, a jumper.
08:08I guess I'm having a hard time visualizing what goes on top.
08:11I'm just hoping that we can just get through it.
08:18Alright designers, each team will design two looks. So your 30 minutes starts right now.
08:23These belong. This gets weird.
08:27Amy and I are a little stumped by fabric shopping at Moons.
08:30There's two of us, which means that we kind of both have to approve on the fabrics.
08:34It sort of, in a way, cuts your time in half.
08:36Let's go darker.
08:37Same segment.
08:38It should be indigo.
08:39We decide that he is going to do the denim day look.
08:41So, of course, the first swatch of denim he has is black.
08:45That's blue?
08:46So I make him change that.
08:48That's blue.
08:49How do you feel about that?
08:50I'm good with this.
08:51It is beautiful.
08:52Hearing the word China, you think of red and gold.
08:55However, I think that the greater challenge for us is to look a little deeper and not just be so literal.
09:01I'm a little concerned about Anthony's textile choices just because he's had some trouble in the past.
09:07We just need to be careful about how we use it because it could be really cheesy.
09:10All right, everyone.
09:11Time is up.
09:13That's it.
09:14Thank you, Mood.
09:22Wow.
09:23It's palpable that it's a much smaller group in here.
09:26You have until midnight tonight and precious little time tomorrow for this challenge.
09:30And we have only the creme de la creme here.
09:33Make no assumptions that the team leader will go home.
09:36Thank you very much.
09:37Three of them.
09:38I'm going to kind of slash and spread this.
09:42Maybe spread it to like maybe five inches.
09:45Jay is taking charge of the day look.
09:47These pants are definitely not something I would design.
09:50But I can't really say anything because he's the leader.
09:53He makes the final decisions.
09:54Maybe I can do something like let this.
09:56Oh, yeah, yeah.
09:57Make up more like evening evening.
09:58For the evening look, I'm going to do a throwback to the classic Harlem Billie Holiday, the Cotton Club, that kind of vibe.
10:06Dude, I got to do it.
10:08The main thing that I want to achieve as a designer is to be very current.
10:13You got to stop saying I and say we because we have to because it can't be about one person.
10:18No, no.
10:19I mean, I am the leader.
10:20I think that in this particular case, though, Maya has already admitted that she has control issues.
10:25I'm, you know, I'm a subtle, I have a subtle controlling aspect of my personality.
10:30I cannot afford to be scared of anything at this point.
10:33I'm starting to think that this print is like not good.
10:39Basically, it would be pleated here, sunburst, cut out.
10:43It would be pleated here, sunburst, cut out.
10:45My dress has a lot of detail.
10:47Amy's dress has a lot of detail.
10:48We're just going to dive right in.
10:51I have about a million pleats to make by hand.
10:55Let's just make this idea as complicated as possible.
11:00It's going to be a struggle.
11:01Oh, shoot.
11:03Coming up on Project One Way.
11:06Jay hasn't even started a tank top yet.
11:09I'm literally, at this point, using every technique I know how to do on this one garment.
11:14We're going to be creating two looks, a day look and an evening look based on one of four neighborhoods.
11:29Ooh, it's like a Chinese dragon.
11:33Maya is working on the day look and I am working on the evening look.
11:37I was thinking like bigger, like this big.
11:39In the evening look, we will be creating this three-dimensional diamond inspired by the dragon tissue lantern.
11:47I think that they should just sort of trail off.
11:50She can't seem to focus enough on her own garment.
11:53Once we have all of these, we can be artsy and have some artistic license about where to place them.
11:59She's even gone as far to make a comment that,
12:01I'm just concerned about these looks because I'm such an artist,
12:04but it's kind of like at this point everybody on this show is an artist.
12:08I just hand wrote some.
12:11I think we've got enough going on.
12:13Yeah, we should just stick to the details.
12:15Seth Aaron works really, really fast.
12:18He doesn't sketch a lot, so I have to keep a critical eye on what he brings in.
12:23A little of this, like with this, you know?
12:27Yeah.
12:28I don't know about the solid yellow though.
12:29If you turn your head for a minute, he would have added stuff that you kind of didn't discuss.
12:35So we just have to find a happy medium.
12:39We don't really say a whole lot to one another.
12:41We're just sort of in the zone.
12:42I mean, that's pretty normal actually for both of us.
12:45We're working very professionally.
12:47I just want to put on a really good show
12:49and forget about the fact that she doesn't like me or I don't like her.
12:52Yeah.
12:53You're like looking good little nugget.
12:56We are both detail people.
12:58We are both texture people, volume people.
13:01Those things take time to do.
13:03And I think that by combining those two volcanic forces,
13:06you basically end up with two people who probably cannot complete these looks in time.
13:12Designers, I have Collier Strong with me and he's here for your makeup consultation.
13:18Hello, hello, hello.
13:19Hey, how are you?
13:21She's my evening girl.
13:22Okay, what part of the city were you doing?
13:24Chinatown.
13:25Okay, so let's shop here at the Studio Secrets wall.
13:27You have primer.
13:28These are some colored golds.
13:30Yes, and I want black on the lash line.
13:32Okay.
13:33Use a black liner and then we'll use a dark brown.
13:35Oh, that's beautiful.
13:36So I think that her lip could be bold.
13:39And I think with the color choices that we're using here,
13:41it will easily blend with the nighttime version.
13:45I like it.
13:47And we're doing Harlem.
13:48She's going to be wearing our evening look.
13:50Okay, the evening look.
13:51And she's going to be wearing the midnight blue.
13:53What about a smoky sensuality?
13:55Yeah.
13:56So that it just kind of brings the eyelid to life.
13:59Yeah, that's beautiful.
14:00Good.
14:01Valeria's going to be wearing our Harlem day look.
14:03Okay, so a little eyeliner.
14:05Just a little smudge right at the base of the lash to add density.
14:08Also, something bright but transparent on the lip.
14:12Perfection.
14:16I'm here to check in with you.
14:18Hi, Tim.
14:19How did your gentleman like Harlem?
14:20I loved it.
14:21I lived there for a while.
14:22I'm a New Yorker.
14:23And I had never been there.
14:24It's the first time there.
14:25It's colorful.
14:26A lot of denim.
14:27And we incorporated it into a denim two-piece look for our day look.
14:31I'm crazy about this jacket.
14:32The evening look is going to be the modern day Billie Holiday.
14:35We'll just keep the urban edge going.
14:37Yeah, it's definitely an urban edge.
14:39You two are busy.
14:40All these souvenir shops in Chinatown had all these paper dragons.
14:44And we made this thing.
14:46I don't even know what you'd call it on the evening look.
14:49I'm working on the day look, so the jacket is going to be for Lorena.
14:52What's the textile?
14:53It's this.
14:54This looks so weak.
14:55Yeah.
14:56Compared to the rest of your palette.
14:57Why did you reject the stripe?
14:58I'm just going to ask perfectly bluntly.
14:59Why couldn't that be the jacket?
15:00It could.
15:01So how are you two doing?
15:02Moving along.
15:03Good.
15:04Yeah.
15:05So what are the pieces you're making today?
15:06I'm working on a pair of pants.
15:07So you'll see like a form fitting and then it'll kind of like poof out here.
15:09Is it possible that Heidi and Nina are going to say what woman wants to look wider there?
15:13It's going to hit her at the right spot.
15:14You're not going to see much fullness from here up.
15:15And what's on top?
15:16We were going to do some kind of like a striped top using black and the red.
15:25And Mila, what are you doing?
15:26I'm doing this jacket and then we're doing a dress underneath out of this groovy fabric.
15:34What is the general silhouette of the dress like and what's the neckline like?
15:39Yeah.
15:40out of this groovy fabric.
15:42What is the general silhouette of the dress like,
15:44and what's the neckline like?
15:45We're still debating that.
15:46We're still talking at this point.
15:47Someone's going home.
15:49Don't look at me.
15:50I can look at any of you.
15:52All right, thank you.
15:54Thanks, Tim.
15:55Amy, Jonathan.
15:56Hi, Tim.
15:57For our day wear, we're doing a kind of spin off of a shirt dress,
16:01and Jonathan's working on the wrought iron influence for the evening look.
16:06Yeah, this dress will actually have panels of my cut work,
16:08as well as the arcing pleating panels.
16:12Are you at risk of over-designing?
16:17I'm like, we know that probably.
16:20It's not a matter of how much work did you get done
16:22and what amount of time.
16:24It's how good is the look.
16:26Designers, I'm going to leave you for the evening,
16:28and your models will be coming in a little later for fitting.
16:32All right, work hard.
16:33Make it work.
16:36Is it overly designed?
16:38Us?
16:38Us?
16:39When?
16:40When Tim said the word over-design,
16:42I was like, oh, my God.
16:44I mean, I'm literally, at this point,
16:46using every technique I know how to do on this one garment.
16:48He's right.
16:49This could be a carnival.
16:51I wonder if we have enough solid fabric.
16:53My goal is to have the pants done next and then the hat.
16:58So I'm the one that's behind.
16:59I got to get this together to try on her.
17:02Oh, that's right.
17:03They're coming soon.
17:03The problem that Anthony is running into is that the details
17:06on the evening dress are all completely hand-stitched,
17:09and there are a million diamond-shaped designs
17:12that have to be tacked on.
17:16Hi.
17:17Oh, my God.
17:17Oh, my God.
17:18Oh, my God, I'm so nervous now.
17:20I'm going to finish this.
17:22You always finish.
17:23You always finish.
17:24But I have a partner.
17:26I've been praying not to have teams.
17:28Like, I don't know.
17:29It's ridiculous.
17:30You have to pretend you're nice to each other.
17:33Mm-hmm.
17:33It was so funny.
17:34I saw my friends.
17:35He'll be right in.
17:36He's just putting the last seam on.
17:37I've never put a dress together this freaking fast in my life.
17:41I'm not even ready.
17:41This is the first time ever.
17:45Wow.
17:45They actually fit really good.
17:47The pants that I made for Brittany fit her well.
17:49The poof on the side doesn't look as bad as Tim had
17:52anticipated.
17:53So I'm really excited.
17:54I can't wait to finish these pants.
17:56So the hem is shorter in the back than it is in the front.
18:01Step.
18:02Oh, is it that part?
18:03I cut it like it had the stretch,
18:05and then I cut it the wrong way.
18:06The jacket goes on.
18:07She gets right to that point, and it stops.
18:09And I'm all like, well, that's the point.
18:11It needs to be cut.
18:14I was like, what?
18:16So I pull it off her, and I just cut them off.
18:19She freaks out.
18:20Yeah, see, because I want it to hit here.
18:23It's done, done.
18:23Put it on her.
18:24Fits perfectly.
18:25Puffs on.
18:26We're good.
18:26Bye.
18:27Bye.
18:28I'm a little nervous about the time, I have to say.
18:33Out of the corner of my eye, I see
18:35that Jay hasn't even started a tank top yet.
18:38I'm just worried that we would end up in the bottom
18:40if Jay's look isn't complete.
18:42Jay and Mila?
18:44Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
18:46I don't mean to laugh.
18:48It's not professional.
18:52Mila and Jay as a team, first of all,
18:54was set up by Emilio because he's naughty, naughty, naughty boy.
18:58I really am a nice guy, really.
19:00If you really get to know me, let's just say,
19:04it's working as planned.
19:07Is it hot in here, or am I just not going to finish?
19:10Yeah, this is the first time I've seen Jonathan struggle with time,
19:13so I am a little concerned because we were hoping for one of us
19:17to finish earlier and possibly help the other one.
19:19I don't think that's going to happen at this point.
19:21I'm cutting this open work cut work until my fingers are bleeding.
19:24It's getting sloppier by the minutes.
19:26I'm just trying to get it done.
19:28It's spiraling out of control at this point.
19:30Did you say one minute?
19:32My watch says five minutes.
19:33That's wrong.
19:34That time up there's wrong.
19:35Coming up on Project One Way.
19:42What the hell is Amy and Jonathan building in that corner?
19:46There's no way that I can get this done.
19:48Jonathan, Amy.
19:49This is the most horrifying experience of my life.
19:53Oh, Jonathan, how do you feel this morning?
20:05Disgusting.
20:06I honestly don't know if I can physically so fast enough
20:10to do all the things that I need to do.
20:12I am hurting this morning.
20:15Oh, my God.
20:16I don't know how I'm going to get it done, honestly.
20:18Yeah.
20:19Down to the nitty-gritty here.
20:23We shall leave as three and return as three.
20:40I'm so nervous about the runway show
20:43because I'm feeling right now like there's no way
20:45that I can get this done.
20:47We can do triangles here.
20:50We have a lot to do, and I'm not sure
20:53if it's going to get done.
20:54Are you serious?
20:55Yeah.
20:55I know we sort of want to stay away
20:57from asymmetrical designs, but I don't know.
21:00This is when your control issues are probably
21:01about to come back and buy.
21:03I'm a little worried about the look being mostly black.
21:07Chinatown is so colorful, but we didn't want
21:09to go too literal with it.
21:12Good morning, designers.
21:13Good morning, gentlemen.
21:14Each design team will have an hour to send their models
21:17to the Garnier Hair Salon and the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room.
21:20You know the drill on the blue fly wall.
21:22Style these looks so that they are each wow moments.
21:27All right.
21:29Make it work.
21:34I love it.
21:36The daytime looks a little evening.
21:38I'm very concerned about making sure that that comes across
21:41this is sophisticated and not old grandmama.
21:47Cool, eh?
21:47I feel like my outfit is looking great,
21:50but I can't believe how ill-fitting this tank top is
21:54that Jay made.
21:55And I just know that it's not going to be good on the runway.
22:03What the hell is Amy and Jonathan building in that corner?
22:08And I don't think they're going to have the time to finish this.
22:10So I think that's going to be a little bit of bloodshed there.
22:18So you have the Martin Bay Billy Holiday.
22:20Billy Holiday.
22:21And then the yellow with the sheer.
22:23I do.
22:24Cool.
22:25Wrap it like two pieces and wrap it around,
22:27kind of like chopsticks.
22:28Do you know what I mean?
22:30Kind of a devilment hair up to definitely.
22:33Yeah.
22:38Good job.
22:40You know, I really don't want to have to place blame.
22:51But when the judges ask who did what,
22:54I'm going to make sure that they know what I've done.
22:57I'm a little bit worried that Mila is going to throw me under the bus.
22:59Then I'm going to have to defend myself.
23:02Designers and models.
23:04This is it.
23:05Please follow me.
23:06We're going down the runway.
23:11Sit there.
23:12You have a thread.
23:13Oh, we'll get it.
23:16I'm on my hands and knees sewing Holly into her dress.
23:19Amy's trimming things.
23:20It's unbelievable.
23:21Jonathan, Amy.
23:23This is the most horrifying experience of my life.
23:28Coming up on Project Runway.
23:29It just doesn't look polished.
23:31I mean, this for me is an eyesore.
23:33I got sidetracked by the ducks.
23:35Welcome to the runway.
23:45As you know, in fashion one day you're in,
23:47and the next day you're out.
23:49There are eight of you here and after tonight there will be seven.
23:53For this challenge you worked in teams.
23:56We sent you out into the streets of New York City
23:59to find inspiration in one of four very different neighborhoods.
24:03Okay, let's meet the judges.
24:06First, sitting in for Michael Kors,
24:08we have Francisco Costa,
24:10women's creative director for Calvin Klein Collection.
24:13Fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
24:17Fashionable model and actress, Molly Sims.
24:23We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
24:26One of you will be named the winner.
24:28And one of you will be out.
24:32Let's start the show.
24:40I'm excited about the day look.
24:42I really feel confident in it.
24:44I think it's different and I think it's unique and it'll stand out.
24:48For a team challenge, I think we did great.
24:51I've never seen any detailing like that on a dress.
24:59So the fact that we have come up with this new approach was very interesting
25:03and I thought that it was a very avant-garde approach to the evening room.
25:07The pants are amazing on her.
25:14They just look so great.
25:15I'm so proud of myself.
25:16The top is a little problematic.
25:18That's the only part I'm worried about.
25:20But it looks good on the runway.
25:22So I think we'll be okay.
25:23I'm very happy with the boldness and the statement that it makes.
25:35She's working it.
25:36She's giving a little edge to her walk and I think it looks great.
25:40I think that there are definitely aspects in there that are specific to my aesthetic.
25:49The pleating, the gradating color are very me.
25:54Both the garments are very cohesive in color story and I think that's a really strong point.
26:05Seeing my evening look on the runway, I feel a lot better.
26:09I feel like we were better at bringing the evening look to a good place
26:14and I feel like we kind of took a really unique spin on the Upper East Side.
26:24In all my design work, one of my key elements is I want to make the wow factor.
26:28I want people to remember it two weeks from now, two months from now.
26:32It's just everything that I want it to be
26:34and Valeria definitely knows how to make it look its best.
26:39She's just gliding.
26:45It just looks amazing, sophisticated, smart, beautifully made.
26:51Our outfits surpassed our vision.
26:55I think we just have a home run.
26:56We hit it out the park on this one.
26:58If I call your name, please step forward.
27:02Jay and Mila.
27:04Amy and Jonathan.
27:07Your teams have the lowest scores.
27:09We're going to talk to the teams with the highest scores first
27:12and then I'm going to bring you back so you can leave the runway.
27:21Anthony, Maya, Emilio, Seth Aaron.
27:24Let's bring out your models.
27:30Emilio, you were the team leader.
27:32Well, our experience was Harlem.
27:34And for our day look, we wanted to do a denim look and we accented it with the gold stitching.
27:41And for our evening look, we wanted then to represent the classic old school Harlem of modern day Billie Holiday.
27:50I have to say I'm in love with both pieces.
27:53Thank you, thank you.
27:54And I love all the details.
27:55It looks impeccable and they also relate.
27:59Initially, I had a little question because I thought the gown perhaps would go a little sexier and shorter,
28:05but it really held up together really well because it's rather sophisticated both outfits.
28:10And if you want to be sexier, you just unzip that zipper a little higher.
28:13Right.
28:14You can make it shorter and shorter.
28:15No, absolutely.
28:16And who did what in terms of the...
28:18I did this and I did this.
28:21Since we wanted to do a denim look, I know Seth Aaron is so strong in that area.
28:27What I brought to the table was...
28:28Color.
28:29Color, new for him.
28:30So I wanted to make sure that he was able to work in his element, but I wanted to bring in a little of my touch, which is color.
28:37I thought it was very smart of you, Emilio, to make her wear a print, bring this yellow in.
28:43I think sometimes, Seth, you go a little overboard with the detailing.
28:49You know, there's a lot of piping on this, there's the collar, there's the buttons, there's the tails.
28:55Had you taken some of those elements off, this would have been a more tasteful look.
29:01Okay.
29:02I loved it.
29:03I loved a bit of color.
29:04I love the hardware.
29:05I love a great zipper.
29:06I love the gold.
29:07Having something also a little off, like the one earring with the hat, it's good.
29:11She's our fly girl from Harlem.
29:16So how was it working together?
29:17We had fun.
29:18It was...
29:19I love Seth Aaron.
29:20We were...
29:21We just meshed.
29:22Anthony, you were the team leader.
29:25Tell us about your two looks.
29:26We were allowed to travel to Chinatown, which I had never gone, never been there before in my life.
29:33So initially I got sidetracked by the ducks hanging in the window.
29:36However, one of the first inspirations that...
29:40We don't do that in Georgia, but...
29:43One of the initial inspirations was this tissue lantern, and they were dragons.
29:49And that's what inspired this dress, the evening look.
29:52And as far as the daytime look is concerned, the one thing that we really collaborated on and celebrated together was like the lines and the structure of the buildings.
30:02And the pagoda.
30:03Well, I think this was a really great collaboration.
30:08I like the fact that you did those little details in red, and then it picks up with the red of her lips.
30:14I like the subtle detail of the pagoda shape on the jacket without screaming, this is China.
30:21Here, it looks beautiful.
30:23I love the origami.
30:24I love that three-dimensional effect that it has.
30:27But I wish that I would have seen a little more color in the detail.
30:31I can see a dragon in this kind of work that you've done here, but it's more subtle.
30:37I love the day look more.
30:40I love the sleeve.
30:41The hair and the makeup is right on.
30:43I think you explore that in the best way.
30:46You made it also very urban.
30:47The work is really beautiful, and it's really well made.
30:51What was it like working together?
30:53I felt like I was going to drive her crazy because she's so quiet.
30:55But the one good thing about Maya, don't let that pretty face fool you.
30:58If she doesn't like something or she wants to change something, she will surely let you know.
31:03Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
31:05You can leave the runway.
31:07Okay, let's bring out the designers with the lower scores.
31:20Amy, you were the team leader.
31:21Please tell us about your inspiration.
31:23Our neighborhood was the Upper East Side.
31:26There was a beautiful brick building that had very peachy tones and a very repetitive pattern,
31:32and that's where we drew the color palette for the day wear look and the lines of pleating.
31:36And for our evening wear look, we were inspired by the raw iron gates and doors,
31:42and Jonathan did his beautiful cut work.
31:44How is it working together?
31:45We love working together.
31:47I have a great respect for Amy's design sensibility, and she, the same way for me.
31:53Yeah.
31:54The problem that I have with this day wear look, it just doesn't look polished.
32:00I agree.
32:02I, um, the day look, that is a really hard color to wear.
32:06I didn't really get the inspiration of the Upper East Side with the day look.
32:10Perhaps it was a white shirt, you know, and flat, and a great narrow, straight leg.
32:15This, for me, is an eyesore.
32:17I think it is quite ugly, to be honest.
32:20The nighttime look, I don't find as bad as the daytime look, but it's also, it's very, very busy.
32:27Nighttime look is a little more sophisticated.
32:29You see more of a workmanship, and it's more successful.
32:32I love the work in front, but I think the panels really killed it, because all of a sudden it looks...
32:38Heavy.
32:39Heavy, and it makes it look cheap.
32:41Jay, you were the team leader.
32:44Tell us about your two designs.
32:46We have the Lower East Side as our, um, neighborhood.
32:49We both just kind of gravitated to the boldness of the graffitis and the texture, um, that they're on.
32:57This is the daytime look, and this is the nighttime look.
33:00I love this nighttime look.
33:02I, I particularly like that you did the red hose and boots.
33:06It looks fantastic styling-wise, and I can see the lines of that inspiration, but I am very disappointed with the day look.
33:15I think the top looks like a leotard.
33:18It's a tank top, but, but it's not even a tank top that is well-made.
33:23And I also have a problem with the fit on the top.
33:25I mean, her boobs are just kind of sort of floating around in there.
33:28The pants, I get the fact that you were going for a really cool pant, but I don't think that was successful either.
33:35It's interesting because I see more of a synergy.
33:37I think the pants and the top are very much each side, and, you know, there's something quite cool about it being, not being perfect.
33:43But that tank is, no.
33:45It tanked.
33:46The tank tank.
33:48What was it like working together?
33:50We worked, I think, professionally.
33:55Um, like things just kind of like organically came together, and, um, this is what we've achieved.
34:00Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
34:04We're going to have a little chat, and then I call you back.
34:07You can leave the runway.
34:09Okay, let's talk about the designers with the lower scores.
34:19Let's talk about Amy and Jonathan.
34:22You know, I had high hopes for Amy, but she gets too caught up in the technical and doesn't see the big picture.
34:28The vibe of the Upper East Side did not come across.
34:31No.
34:32It looked very vintage.
34:33It looked Lower East Side.
34:34Yeah.
34:35In the 50s.
34:36Maybe it would have been better if it actually was a dress, because it was too tight in the waist.
34:41That's what makes her look like an umbrella.
34:43The night look.
34:44Definitely better than the daytime look, but I still thought that it was a bit overworked.
34:48There's a simplicity to it.
34:50It obviously needs to be reworked.
34:52Without the panels.
34:53Yeah.
34:54Yeah.
34:55Let's move on to Jay and Mila.
34:57I had a problem with the day look.
35:01It was a tank, and it looked ill-fitting, badly made.
35:07The pant was overworked.
35:09I was really surprised to see this from Jay.
35:11It almost seems as if Mila was the team leader instead of Jay.
35:17You know, Mila is all about structure, lines.
35:21She loves black and white.
35:22The executioner was impeccable.
35:24Okay, let's move on to the designers with the highest scores.
35:30Should we start with Anthony and Maia?
35:33This was a very subtle and gentle inspiration.
35:36Subtle, but with a lot of great design in it.
35:39Great design.
35:40Not boring.
35:41I could see their vision.
35:42Yes.
35:43Both looks are definitely sophisticated.
35:45The daytime is also sophisticated.
35:47I would wear the jacket.
35:48Yes.
35:49I love the little touch of red, the little detail of the pagoda shape on the jacket.
35:55The sleeve was great.
35:56It was great.
35:57It was really well thought of, really very nice and very subtle.
36:05Let's move on to Emilio and Seth Aaron.
36:08Great pieces.
36:09It has a great attitude.
36:11It's got a great vibe.
36:12I love the injection of color, the injection of print, the bag.
36:16Everything worked.
36:17But they really tried to make it work together as a team.
36:21And there's these zippers you just get.
36:23It's one story.
36:24So it's very mature, I find.
36:26Mm-hmm.
36:27You know, I think they're very sophisticated.
36:29And I think they really balanced each other here for some reason.
36:32Yeah, no, they did.
36:33In the best way.
36:34They seem very strong individuals, but they worked very well together.
36:37You know, the evening dress was really...
36:39That's what disappointed me.
36:40Yes, it was well made, but I know that Emilio can do more.
36:45I know it.
36:49Are we confident that we made the right decision?
36:51Yes.
36:52Okay, let's bring them back up.
36:55The eight of you represent the best and the worst.
37:02One of you will be named the winner.
37:04And one of you will be out.
37:07Emilio, congratulations.
37:08You are the winner of this challenge.
37:10Seth Aaron, you are also the winner of this challenge.
37:12Dave!
37:13I'm not happy.
37:14No, I'm just kidding.
37:15No, I'm just kidding.
37:16No, I'm just kidding.
37:17one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out Emilio congratulations
37:26you are the winner of this challenge Seth Aaron you are also the winner of this challenge we
37:40appreciate the maturity of design and the way you translated your inspirations it was clear also
37:46that you worked well together to show off both of your talents you're both in and can leave the
37:51runway thank you so much a double win it was a project runway first time so not only did we
38:02both get a win under our belt but we also made a little project only history I'm happy there's
38:10more designing to be done Anthony and Maya well done you're in you can leave the runway thank you
38:24Mila Jonathan you're in you can leave the runway
38:31Jay your tank top was ill-fitting and mismatched with those pants which were also questionable in
38:43terms of color construction and fabric choice Amy your strange shirt dress was a disappointment from
38:51the color to the dowdy cut it was bad retro you got lost in a concept without executing it well
38:58Amy you're out that means Jay you're in you can leave the runway thank you for the opportunity
39:20I'm absolutely proud of myself for how far I've come I wish I could jam-pack all of my life with
39:33these kinds of experiences and it's kind of quick growth it's really hard to watch Amy go home the only
39:45thing that's saving me from being completely overall by this is that she's so strong she's
39:51just a wonderful person you are an incredibly talented designer thank you so Emilio Seth Aaron
40:07congratulations to you as a designer I really like to try new things and I don't want to change my
40:13perspective because somebody you know doesn't like something I want to stay true to myself I wasn't
40:19ever scared to make something even though I knew it was a huge risk and I'm proud of that quality
