00:43this is your Mary Kay challenge aside from being a global beauty brand Mary Kay also empowers women
00:53by giving them the opportunity to be their own bosses as Mary Kay independent beauty consultants
00:58now today's challenge is all about channeling your passion for fashion and combining it with
01:05the entrepreneurial mindset that Mary Kay just embraces and before we go any further our Mary
01:12Kay challenge is your first team challenge you will be working in two teams of six each team will
01:26collaborate on a cohesive mini collection of four looks the concept for the collection is completely
01:34up to your team so whatever you want to create as a collaborative team you may you have one day
01:41for this challenge each team will be shopping at mood with a budget of we don't know yet your budget
01:52depends upon how
01:53well you can sell your collection concept to a group of mystery investors I'm used to doing pitches I'm a
02:04business scholar so I'm quite excited about it I've definitely pitched you know to my parents that counts right so
02:12each team will have 45 minutes to work together to create your pitch there is a lot writing on these
02:20pitches each of the mystery investors has $1,000 so they will decide how to divide that between the teams
02:29and
02:30the designers and the designers on the winning team will each receive $5,000 to build their business compliments of
02:39Mary Kay
02:41oh my god the prize is amazing $5,000 can change my life Rick congratulations you won the last challenge

03:52he's a great designer why do you look so perplexed I'm a little nervous about my teammates because these
03:59people are roommates and I haven't had a lot of interaction with them Aaron Dexter

04:13picked as long as I'm on a team where I can express myself all right designers get to work
04:19so what are going to be our base colors black and gray how about black and brown I don't like

04:30listen to me we have a really fun and really badass side to us so I'm thinking that that should

04:51he can articulate very well this is a high-waisted dress that's flouse up around the breast I can totally
04:57do like a wool jacket a coat that has like mauve and yellow and like black together or something how

05:09pitching it to them they're gonna say who are you selling this to the only thing that no one in

05:12group is doing is coming up with a well-executed plan to discuss getting the money that is crucial

05:33hi guys pitch hello investors my name is Alex Snyder and I'm representing six of America's top emerging
05:41fashion designers and we're seeking investment to create a collection that enhances women's confidence
05:48for a business every day as well as entrepreneurship and we want to make a woman feel empowered we're
05:55going to be using a base color story of black and navy the first look is a structural jacket with
06:01a draped
06:01jersey dress we also have a beautiful vest and tapered pants Alex is doing a great job at pitching he
06:08knows exactly what he's talking about who is this woman this woman is someone who is educated she has
06:14a career that market is very saturated what's going to be so special about this collection that it's going
06:23to be able to compete it's going to be those incredible details of trimming it's a subtle hints of
06:29like an under collar being a contrast and what are your price points moderately affordable I would say

06:57accomplishments that got me here we're a collaborative group of fashion designers spanning from California all
07:02the way to Paris France we've come together to talk about an untapped demographic pushed forward
07:08by the tech industry a customer that is definitely more fashion forward with more income starting with
07:14a classic suit blazer and cigarette pant next we have our leather jacket and harem pants for a woman
07:20with an edge next we have our flirty mock neck dress with please why should I invest most of my
07:26money on
07:26you I think that we all have a really strong design aesthetic and we all come from strong backgrounds
07:31in fashion by building all of our creative knowledge together and our experience and our experiences I think
07:37that we're an amazing team to push forward on a new line and to be trusted with your money and
07:42what is
07:42your design POV all of our collective background with a little bit of fun and a little bit of seriousness
07:47but
07:48like badass too I love badass what price points yeah how do you feel about 100 to 300 yeah design

11:30hi louise hi alex i'm excited because mary k speaks to every woman what did you come up with
11:36futuristic meets modern so we want to do a very strong brow and maybe do a little color under the
11:44eye that varies between the models this is called azure pick up blue which i think would be really
11:50wonderful to pop in in the corner here so i'll just adjust sort of the feeling of the same look

11:56one of your girls so that there's a cohesion this is ice cocoa and it's a cream eyeshadow beautiful we're
12:05going to use the steely eyeliner on the bottom i like that i knew you would

12:18in makeup you're a fan of makeup i see i'm a big fan of makeup so anything that you're doing

12:22literally absorbing like a sponge so if i don't do well with this part of it it could actually hurt

19:32brooks brothers women and fashion designer zach posen hello designers creative director for
19:39mary clara magazine nina garcia hi everyone and today's guest judge sabrina carpenter start of girl
19:46meets world and recording artist with hollywood records welcome thank you hello also we have tim gunn
19:55here for the runway show as you know he is your mentor and will not be judging your looks that

20:00he will have the tim gunn safe if at some point during the competition he disagrees with the judges
20:06he can use his safe to bring that eliminated designer back to the competition all right let's start the show
20:18i'm loving it it looks polished and it looks expensive so i'm really excited to hear what these
20:25judges are gonna think i like the colors in that jacket i feel that we really turned this collection
20:30around and amped it up for the judges
20:38i pray that the judges see that we did our best to turn the collection in a different direction
20:43that we did add some fun elements to it i think we did a really good job
20:59i end up going with the new jacket and i'm really happy that i did it because it breeds really
21:03well on
21:04the runway it's really well put together and amazing i think it's full of detail full of different textures
21:12it's very relevant it's very new it's very exciting i feel very happy with the results
21:20i am electrified i think it looks young i think it looks modern we have great looks that are
21:28interchangeable i think your jacket over here our team we feel that it is a slam dunk
21:41i'm really proud of what we were able to pull up as a team i think there's a piece of
21:45everyone in the collection and i think that's really important if you're designing as a group
21:57i'm so proud to see our collection it's really strong and it's beautiful
22:03the denim suit looks good i think it's super light hot and chic
22:11when that mauve dress walks out on the runway it looks more bland than i anticipated i just really
22:17hope that that doesn't put us on the bottom if our team loses we're gonna have to say goodbye to
22:25somebody it's a really scary thought i think that our collection is more vibrant and we added a little
22:39edge so i hope that we make good impression of the judges laurence three black new feet i am mind

22:46right now i'm loving how everything is married together with the color i'm feeling really good about our
22:58collection it does look better than the other groups we have a stronger color on the runway it looks

23:14we really did it we really pulled together as a group and all worked until the last minute to make

24:33really integrated between all of us and making sure that every look had a piece of us in there
24:38we definitely really got along which is wonderful and we tried to stick to what we presented the edgy
24:42working woman and we really tried to think about mary k at the same time and like making strong
24:46this one over here he did a great job thank you i think you guys really spend your money wisely
24:51having this yellow on the runway it really was a breath of fresh air and it's versatile it's got
24:58many possibilities this line i love wearing suits and they kind of get boring so putting that embellishment
25:05on the sleeve and on the cuff of the pant that is really something new same with the code on
25:10the
25:10pockets i thought it was fantastic whose idea was it with the embellishment mademoiselle brava that i
25:16feel like elevated the whole collection the whole collection the black and the yellow is a little
25:21bumblebee i do appreciate the risk taking of the color yellow though because when i think of working
25:26woman that's not the first color that comes to mind and i think that definitely was a bold choice
25:31okay i'm gonna bring it down really real there was one look up there that could have sunk the whole
25:37ship the jersey dress to me really was a low point but the rest of it saved the collection so
25:46we all
25:46want to know who did what it's hard to decipher like lauren's of course did the leather jacobs
25:52that's her thing i could tell that miles away she wouldn't let her sit down don't worry aaron worked on
25:58the yellow coat really i did the yellow sturdy and everything else they needed me to do i made the
26:04pattern for the pants and dexter constructed and kind of tailored them to fit brick and i collaborated
26:08on this great dress here laurence your leather jacket is so beautiful and it is so well made this
26:17looks like a two thousand dollar jacket that came right out of the store the yellow coat is really
26:22terrific it's a standout piece i would wear that yeah but as a whole the collection was just more
26:27fashion forward and i think that's why this was the winning team thank you thank you so much since
26:33you are the winning team there will be one winner in your team laurence who do you think should win
26:41okay um aaron um i think dexter should win he pulled it together with the presentation for the
26:49investors to give us money and the way he really leaded our group was really powerful
26:54i probably would vote dexter as well because he did a good job taking the lead he was running around
26:58and in between so uh i appreciate that i don't know it's so hard i just feel like everyone worked
27:03so
27:03hard but um aaron this is really hard to choose just one person but i'd have to go with laurence

27:09really astonished with the way she just never really worried yeah she kept us all safe she was awesome
27:14i'd have to go with laurence as well she was a great team player and an expert taylor the whole

27:43a cohesive collection but trying to keep everybody's ideas incorporated so every piece have a little
27:51bit of everyone's we worked together as a team the whole time i have to say yes you are the

27:58but what you've done with 800 it is incredible so you should all be very proud of what you've done
28:03thank you so who did what the look that i created was the wool lame dress i created the bomber
28:11jacket i
28:12created the vest and the belt this vest that you've made marjing is beyond beautiful this is my favorite
28:19in this whole collection i made the brocade trousers with the tuxedo shirt i made the jacket with the faux
28:29lapel but we actually all touched every piece we helped each other finish it i think your jacket here
28:35looks kind of fresh but the pants underneath looks like it's been in the tumble dry what about you alex
28:41the last dress in the presentation we had that very a-line dress which when we went back and
28:48re-analyzed didn't really fit in so we all took a look at it and decided to streamline it and
28:54make
28:55it a little bit more modern it just doesn't look as sharp and polished as the rest especially from the
28:59back i don't know what's going on back there but it does look a bit a metallic fabric on a
29:04fitted dress
29:05like that unless it is perfectly sewn is going to show everything i just want to say how proud i
29:12am
29:13of everyone i've been working in the industry for a really long time i'd be so proud to work with
29:19any of these people again and i'm unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to learn from the
29:27younger people that are so passionate and that's why the you know this is so hard because we were
29:34so close in the room rick who do you think should be going home today i wish there was that
29:42one person
29:43that we could throw under the bus but we did collaborate it was a design team unfortunately
29:48one of you guys has to go home today well i guess we would have to be the dress that
29:52you like least
29:52to be quite honest i know we're always pointing out this last look of this dress here but we also

29:59not really love this second look roberi who do you think should go home today well the second look is
30:06a combination but it's mostly an idea i had so that said i would put myself so roberi is saying
30:16then you
30:16should go home yes cornelius i wanted this for so long you know what i mean i'm sorry i just
30:35can't do it to
30:37them i can't do that to you guys you know you gotta be real so i'll go home for mine
30:45notalia what about you if you guys hate my jacket the most then i'd say you can send me home
30:57marjing working with these guys was dope they made me feel welcome they have four roommates and best
31:04friends i'm the outsider i was on the bottom before so i had a lot to prove
31:13who should go home it's hard for me to pick i wish that if we had pitched it a little
31:18differently
31:19maybe you guys have understood and it would have connected and i don't want no one to feel like
31:25i'm throwing them under the bus go right ahead i want to see alex and this is not personal at

31:31it's not but you know i've grown to really like you yeah alex what about you i failed on the
31:38pitch
31:39and i failed my team they put their trust into me so if there's anybody that deserves to go home

31:46none of these people at all does that mean you gave up i'm not giving up i would love to

31:54and show you what i have but at the same time with everybody

32:58bag i can't help myself so they bought embroidery pieces and then chopped into it nice would you wear
33:04this sabrina not a lot of teenage girls wear suits but i like them a lot yeah but also it's
33:08great
33:08because it's a denim suit yeah and then it has all this embellishment which makes it more fun
33:15ladies please step forward it's pretty underwhelming yeah i mean it's a tube dress with a fur muffled neck
33:23oh this jacket is to die for she sure can like whip out in a day this is insane you
33:32could tell immediately
33:33this was laurence yes you can always tell when it comes down the runway that is an errant piece color
33:42choice is the best thing about it it's thinking outside of the box
33:47yes sirika i thought this was cool construction yeah i like this too the unfortunate thing is that
33:54there's some very good pieces like that jacket this dress that vest that we love but everything's got
34:02this nightclub or the hostess of the restaurant at dinner time after your investor critique they
34:08were so afraid of boring you that they went they over designed it
34:17this is beautiful and i have to say i am shocked that this is marjing who made this well this
34:22was his
34:22breakthrough yeah it's super sharp and gorgeous very nice very well done
34:31that's such a smart looking coat very but then the blouse is very unfortunate the pants are fortunate
34:39the top and the pants were roberi the one thing i was confused about was how the shirt was so
34:44long
34:44in the back i don't understand the top well it's deconstructed but nothing else but nothing else
34:50so it's not cohesive and allah wait to go to work in so over ambitious i mean would anyone like
35:01this
35:01if this wasn't supposed to be like a work outfit of course a strapless dress is great but in the
35:07metallic denim ill-fitting with this it just doesn't make sense to me thank you tim okay so we've made
35:18our
35:23decision
35:24designers today was a tough one there were pieces in both collections that we really liked and other
35:31pieces that did not turn out so well team house of bouton you will each receive five thousand dollars

35:46we felt was the most responsible for the success of this collection
