00:00This is Project Runway.
00:02The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine,
00:06an opportunity to sell their line on bluefly.com, a $50,000 technology suite to create, design
00:12and run their business from HP and Intel, and $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch
00:17their line.
00:20Congratulations, you're going to Fashion Week.
00:37I'm giving each of you $9,000 in the next four months to create a 10-piece collection to show
00:44at Fashion Week.
00:46Mila and Jay, you both will be designing collections, but only one of you will be showing at Fashion
00:53Week.
00:54We want to see more from you before we make our final decision.
00:58When we return to New York, you will choose three looks from your collection to be judged.
01:04One of you will show at the tents, and one of you will be out.
01:09Now let's bring out someone that you all have grown very close to.
01:13It's a little old me.
01:15Hi.
01:16Heidi.
01:17Designers, I just want to tell you how extraordinarily, exceptionally proud I am of each of you.
01:25Look where you are.
01:27And I also want to tell you that before you know it, I'm going to be paying each of you
01:32a visit to check in on the progress of your collection.
01:34All right.
01:35All right?
01:36Good luck, and I can't wait to see you at Fashion Week.
01:48Jay and I both have really strong points of view, I think, that generally speaking come
01:51across in what we do.
01:53But mine's better.
01:55I have to make sure that I beat Jay.
02:00To be in the top four, it's mind-boggling that I'm here.
02:05I know that I could beat Mila and win this competition.
02:09You're going down at Bryant Park, bitches.
02:12The first day I came here, I know what I'm doing for Bryant Park.
02:16It's going to be another showstopper.
02:20Don't forget your purse.
02:23I definitely am going to stay to my aesthetic, and it's definitely going to be not boring.
02:28Do I think I can win Fashion Week?
02:30Hey, I can.
02:31This is it.
02:32Bye, Mila.
02:33Bye.
02:34Bye.
02:35Bye.
02:36Bye.
02:37Bye.
02:38Bye.
02:39I'll see you at Fashion Week.
02:50Bye.
02:51I'm off to check in on the collections of our final four designers.
02:57First up is Seth Aaron Henderson in Vancouver, Washington.
03:00Surprise.
03:01Ah, Tim.
03:02How are you?
03:03I'm great.
03:04How are you doing?
03:05Tim's here.
03:06I'm really anxious to get started.
03:07Here it is.
03:08Are these all new pieces for the collection?
03:10Yes.
03:11I did a total of 15 already.
03:12My God.
03:13I'm marveling at the sheer volume.
03:14My goal is to take at least 20 outfits with me to New York and edit there.
03:18I've never seen anything like this in Project Runway history.
03:21I don't just want to win.
03:23I want to stomp the competition.
03:25I kind of like the look of some skin showing, but really covered.
03:30Oh, it's beautiful.
03:31This is my long coat belt.
03:33It doesn't have to be on there because it does fully snap.
03:37This is one of the first pieces I did.
03:39I love this coat.
03:41Those are pockets.
03:43This underneath.
03:44I think it's a great piece.
03:45This dress, a sweater.
03:48Can I say something?
03:50Yeah.
03:52You could show all this at Bryan Park.
03:54It will look beautiful.
03:56It will look cohesive.
03:58People who don't know your work will be on their feet.
04:01But you're not going to win.
04:04We've had so many designers show at Bryan Park who've had fabulous collections,
04:10but it didn't surprise the judges.
04:12It was the work that they were doing for the challenges.
04:15And I see the zipper details, for instance, and I know that's a signature of yours.
04:19But if you want to win this, you've got to stretch.
04:23You've got to reach beyond what we already have seen from you.
04:27There's no surprise here.
04:29This is classic Seth Aaron.
04:32Mm-hmm.
04:33If this isn't...
04:33Should I show some of that in my collection, though?
04:36I mean, from where I stand, I'd like you to reconceptualize the whole thing.
04:43Between now and Bryan Park, I would expect most of this to go away.
04:50Wow.
04:51I wasn't expecting a complete start over.
04:54You just have to find another level of you.
04:57Half my money's gone.
04:59More than half my time's gone.
05:00So that something new and unexpected emerges, yet we still know it's Seth Aaron.
05:06I know you are capable of this, which is why I'm pushing you.
05:10All right.
05:13So you'll do it.
05:17Cool.
05:17Well, my wife and kids are dying to meet you.
05:20You still want me to meet them after all this?
05:24I've been going like 1,001 miles an hour, but maybe I need to wipe the slate clean,
05:30chill out, and just really think and start over.
05:35So Megan and Aaron, your dad's going to Bryan Park and you're going with him.
05:38How do you feel about it?
05:39Excited.
05:41I told all the kids where I have to go to counseling to know how to deal with this.
05:46Tina, how did the two of you meet?
05:47He was the boy next door.
05:48Is that right?
05:49Yeah.
05:50Being away from my family is the most difficult thing I've ever done.
05:54I did it for them as well as me.
05:56Ready?
05:57Go.
05:57Our goal now is to get to LA.
05:59Eyeglasses.
06:00Draw, draw, draw.
06:01Balloons.
06:02Fallopian tube.
06:04Winning this would definitely allow me to pack up and create a better life.
06:09Tethoscope.
06:12Now I see it.
06:14Well, that was fun.
06:15I got something special in mind for you.
06:17You do?
06:18What is it?
06:19Pop a gun's on the tramp.
06:20The Hundersons are trying to kill me.
06:22Dude.
06:23I did it.
06:26I got Tim to jump on our trampoline and to see him interact with my kids.
06:31Man, it's just awesome.
06:33All right, parting words for you.
06:35I want you to think hard.
06:37I want you to reflect.
06:38Slow and steady wins the race.
06:40Damn.
06:41Take care.
06:41Work hard.
06:42I got to get to work.
06:43Bye.
06:43Bye.
06:53Next, I'm visiting Emilio Sosa in New York City.
06:55It's amazing, isn't it?
06:57It is amazing.
06:58A lot of people don't ever get to see it from this angle.
07:00I'm looking forward to Tim meeting my brothers because the most important thing in my life is my family.
07:04Nicholas.
07:05Nick, nice to meet you.
07:06How are you?
07:06Hi, Felipe.
07:07Hi, Felipe, Tim.
07:07Nice to meet you, too.
07:09So how are you feeling about your brother and his achievements?
07:12Proud of him.
07:13You know, he's...
07:13How proud?
07:14Very proud.
07:16Trust me, Tim, when I tell you, Emilio has the hardest worker that I've known.
07:19We learned our work ethic came from our parents.
07:21My dad came from the Dominican Republic with only one relative in New York.
07:26My father was a janitor.
07:28My mother worked in a factory for 30 years so my brothers and I could have a better future.
07:33We grew up in the South Bronx throughout the 70s and 80s.
07:36Tim, it wasn't easy.
07:40My environment was a very urban, lower-income, tough neighborhood.
07:45But I saw beauty in the ruins.
07:48I saw a graffiti, bright, brash color.
07:52The birth of hip-hop was in my neighborhood.
07:56And that would always be ingrained in my aesthetic.
07:59Bye, gentlemen.
08:00Thank you so much.
08:01It's fighting against the odds to create what you want to create.
08:05Well, Emilio, you have a lot of work done.
08:07I've been working hard.
08:08I'm halfway there.
08:09I was inspired by color.
08:10I can see that.
08:12That's the way I start.
08:13It's refreshing.
08:13You know what?
08:14I believe people think full of the line.
08:17You see a lot of black, a lot of gray.
08:20I'm thinking of turquoise with red.
08:24And I fell in love with this odd, I don't know what color to call it.
08:28Is the whole collection a nod to the 40s?
08:31A touch, a touch.
08:34But then the color brings it to a whole nother level.
08:38I created a print.
08:40It's a camouflage with my initials, my name.
08:44This is what the print looks like now.
08:49For the first time, I think Tim Gunn is actually speechless.
08:52I call it spray-painted brocade.
08:55The epaulettes, little side zippers.
08:57It gets lost in this fabric.
08:59I'm not designing a line for the cameras.
09:02I'm designing a line for my client.
09:04Let me put it this way.
09:05The judges are going to watch these looks walk that runway.
09:08That's going to be their experience with your collection.
09:11And that experience is going to determine whether or not you win this.
09:15I made a very strong showing throughout the season.
09:19Indeed you did.
09:21And they understand that.
09:22But you cannot go into this thinking that that's going to...
09:26I'm not going into it, but I'm not going to go into it like,
09:28oh, I'm not going to do a detail that I want in a jacket.
09:30Look, here's my point.
09:32Here's my point.
09:32What is your point?
09:33My point is you don't have a lot of time left.
09:35You still have a lot of work to do.
09:36Right.
09:37And I'm saying, I don't know that this is worth your time.
09:39That's all.
09:40But you do whatever you want to do.
09:42You just do it.
09:43Okay.
09:44I'm creating a collection for women.
09:47And as far as I know, Tim doesn't wear women's clothing.
09:50I see a serious absence of sophistication in this work.
09:54And I see clothes that look, frankly, old.
09:59Okay.
10:00It's going to have my name on it.
10:01It's not going to have Tim Gunn's name on it.
10:03I see the big picture in my head.
10:05All right.
10:06Do it.
10:07Thank you, sir.
10:08But I'm confident that when it's done,
10:09this collection is going to blow everyone's socks off.
10:14I'm exhausted.
10:15No, get out.
10:16Go.
10:17I'll see you in Bryant Park.
10:20Coming up on Project Runway.
10:22Can I tell you what struck me when I first looked at this?
10:25Conservative, a little matronly.
10:27Dude, what?
10:28What is this?
10:29We're running out of time.
10:30Who is it?
10:31Jay.
10:32I don't want to lose to that little .
10:43Next, I'm visiting Mila Hermanoffsky in rainy Los Angeles.
10:48Mila.
10:49Tim.
10:49How are you?
10:49Hi.
10:50I'm really excited to show Tim my designs.
10:55At this point, I'm not focusing on the three looks that I will be showing the judges.
11:00This is Ziggy.
11:01Hi, Ziggy.
11:02I'm just going to build all ten looks and I'm just going to pull them from there.
11:06I started off with this concept of shadows.
11:09It is all about shadows.
11:11It is all about shadows.
11:12Shadows can be very graphic or they can be soft and they can be evocative, even sinister.
11:18So are you sticking to black and white in the collection?
11:21There is black and white, but there's also-
11:22Of course there is.
11:23Of course.
11:24What my intent is, is to introduce this aubergine color.
11:28I'm just being perfectly one of that.
11:30It's a black and white collection with a few spots of color.
11:33However, it's you.
11:35I know that I'm taking a risk by not showing very much color.
11:40Yeah, beautiful.
11:41That.
11:42Beautiful.
11:42But I'm completely committed to it.
11:44This was the struggle design, you know, that I fell in love with the fabric.
11:50It fits really nicely, but I feel like it's sort of a conservative fit.
11:55Can I tell you what struck me when I first looked at these?
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:58Just that word.
11:59Conservative, even going a little matronly.
12:04Dude, what?
12:05I mean, matronly?
12:07No, no, no, no, no, no.
12:08Look how chic and fabulous you are.
12:10And that's what these need to exude.
12:12My design aesthetic is not as in your face as some of the others.
12:16This was going to be black patent leather.
12:18I love the patent leather.
12:19Oh, good.
12:20I love it.
12:21But as long as I own it.
12:22I can see people wearing this.
12:24And I'm ready to defend it.
12:25It's beautiful.
12:26You know, I can't go wrong.
12:28That first day in New York, you're standing up basically against Jay.
12:33How do you feel about that?
12:34Where my head is at is I'm going to Bryant Park.
12:37Right.
12:38I don't want to lose to that little .
12:41I mean, he's, I don't know.
12:45I think I'm a better designer.
12:46And I just think that he's really annoying.
12:49And he can't win.
12:52No way.
12:52Guess who's here?
12:53Hi.
12:54This is my dad, Del.
12:56Hi, Del.
12:57And this is my mom, Carol.
12:58Hi, Carol.
12:59Nice to meet you.
12:59The support that my parents and my boyfriend, Matthew,
13:02are giving me, it really makes me feel special.
13:05So I have to ask your mother and your father.
13:07We're sitting in a black and white house, black clad, Mila and Matthew,
13:14our adorable Ziggy, black and white.
13:16Was Mila always like this?
13:17It shows up early on.
13:19I mean, she was always dressed to the nines, as I recall, you know.
13:24And then she was in her goth period, I call it, when she was all black.
13:30But I always thought, Mila needs to be the designer.
13:34Even though I have been a costumer in TV and film for the last 12 years,
13:39I never gave up this dream.
13:40When I started off my career in fashion, I felt like when I have my own line, which I will one day,
13:47it will be when I feel like it's time and I'm ready.
13:50I've been given a second shot at living my dream of being a fashion designer.
13:54But to see her get back into the creative process and actually making things,
14:00you know, I saw a wonderful sparkle in her eye.
14:02It was wonderful.
14:03I'm this close to that opportunity.
14:05I'm so close, I can taste it.
14:07Well, I cannot wait to see you in New York.
14:09I have one shot and it's do or die.
14:12Take care.
14:12Thank you, Tim.
14:13Bye.
14:25Finally, I'm visiting J. Nick Losorio in San Francisco.
14:30How are you?
14:32So great to see you.
14:33Great to see you, too.
14:35So talk to me.
14:37My inspiration is the Japanese samurai.
14:39I love the colors, the texture and things that are kind of like sticking out of the costume.
14:44I love the juxtaposition of the samurai and the geisha.
14:48I like to combine soft and hard things together.
14:50So the collar, it creates that, you know, additional softness.
14:53Once you build up the volume and the collar, does everything else disappear?
14:57It might.
14:58I think the most interesting part is the skirt.
15:00I mean, I do, too.
15:00I've seen...
15:01This is where you want the eye to go.
15:02Yes, I get that.
15:04Moving on to this piece, I wanted to make an auto wear that's very dramatic.
15:10Where is this person going?
15:15Nowhere.
15:15Shouldn't that big dramatic statement also be able to walk the red carpet?
15:19I mean, shouldn't Heidi be able to say, I want that for the Oscars?
15:25All right, what's next?
15:26So my kimono jacket.
15:28This is wool and alpaca.
15:33Well, let me tell...
15:33Let's just talk about the bodice aspect.
15:36I think it's a knockout.
15:37I love everything about it.
15:40I love this wrap.
15:41I love the color.
15:42I love the fabric.
15:43Now.
15:44Oh my god.
15:46What is this?
15:48The sleeve.
15:50When it gets gimmicky like that, I fear it gets too much like student work.
15:56When Tim says student work, I want to vomit.
16:00I don't want my collection to look worse.
16:02I don't want my collection to look like I've tried so hard to create drama.
16:08You and Mila are going up against each other.
16:11We are.
16:11I'm not worried about that part.
16:13You aren't.
16:14Why not?
16:14I feel like I have the ball on my side.
16:19I don't have to worry about Mila.
16:21I already know I'm going to beat her, so it's fine.
16:24I love the vest, but it's a matter of what you show it with.
16:27But I still have to go and compete with Seth and Emilio, and I sort of have to go back
16:33and redo some of these pieces running out of time.
16:37There's so many wonderful things happening in there, and then it just goes a little cuckoo.
16:41It's cuckoo Chanel, girl.
16:42My parents are here.
16:47Oh, wonderful.
16:48And my aunt and my partner, Rolando.
16:50I can't wait to meet your family.
16:51They're cooking right now.
16:53This is my place.
16:55Jay, you take these steps so spryly.
16:58Hi, Mom.
16:58Hi, Rolo.
16:59Hi, kid.
17:00Hi, meet Tim.
17:01Hi.
17:02How are you?
17:02Nice to meet you.
17:03Nice to meet you, Rolando.
17:05Hi.
17:05Hi.
17:06How are you?
17:07Oh, I'm fine.
17:09I only see you on TV.
17:11You know, these are the people that are very supportive of what I do.
17:14My Aunt Perez.
17:15Hi, Tim.
17:16Welcome to San Francisco.
17:18I'm thrilled to be here.
17:19And my dad.
17:19Hello.
17:20My dad, he has no idea what Fashion Week is, but I know that he's really proud of me.
17:25I can sew dresses to advance.
17:28And she taught me how.
17:30When I was a kid growing up in the Philippines, my parents had to work two jobs in order for me to be able to finish school.
17:38Your first time to eat Philippines.
17:39Yes.
17:40Delicacy.
17:41Delicious.
17:41Thank you so much.
17:42I felt guilty that I'm making them work so hard just so that I could fulfill my dream.
17:49Your perseverance, your courage, and determination have molded you to an amazing fashion designer.
17:57I'll pray for you so your dreams will come true.
18:01Thanks, Mom.
18:02If I win Project Runway, it's not just my life that's going to change.
18:08I just want to be able to pay my, you know, my parents back because they've worked so hard.
18:14Their whole entire life, I just want to give them the things that they've never had in life.
18:19It feels amazing to be back in New York.
18:25I'm going up against Jay for the third seat in the finalists that get to show at Bryant Park.
18:32My adrenaline is going, I want to show my entire collection.
18:47I don't just want to show three pieces.
18:52I'm the first one here.
18:54What?
18:55Oh, my God.
18:56It's beautiful.
18:57I've never been in anything close to this kind of place.
19:00I feel really lucky that we're staying here.
19:02I guess this is what it's like at the top.
19:06I'm really happy to be back in New York City, but I still have to fight for this third spot
19:13against Mila.
19:14But I think the judges are going to gravitate more to what I'm going to show to them because
19:20I'm current, I'm innovative, I'm everything that a new fashion designer wants to be.
19:26Who is it?
19:28Jay.
19:29Jay and I didn't have much of a relationship for the majority of the season.
19:34How's it going?
19:35Good, how are you?
19:35I can sense immediately that he's feeling awkward.
19:39Are we going to be roommates?
19:40Um, wow, I guess so.
19:45Coming up on Project Runway.
19:47You will have three hours to get ready for your presentation.
19:50Are you kidding me?
19:52He's got color.
19:53Not good for me.
19:54The shin guards won't zip all the way up.
19:56This is it.
19:57We're going down to the runway.
20:05It's so weird talking to you.
20:07Why?
20:08I don't know, like, we never really talked.
20:10Like, even when we partnered together, like, we never talked.
20:13Before coming to New York, I've been thinking,
20:15how am I going to approach Mila?
20:17How am I going to talk to her when I see her?
20:18I know I'm a little hard on the outside before I get to know people.
20:23I don't know about you, but, like, when you're under such intense pressure.
20:26You're in the moment.
20:27You're in the moment, and I get, I mean, everybody reacts differently,
20:30and everybody has their own, like, defense mechanisms and, you know.
20:34Yeah.
20:34It's nice to see the side of you, to be honest with you.
20:37Thanks.
20:38I'm really not such a bad guy.
20:40It's crazy having this conversation.
20:43Are you surprised?
20:44It's a little intense.
20:45It's nice.
20:46It is.
20:47It's nice.
20:47It's sort of cathartic.
20:50She's still my competition at the end of the day.
20:52I still have to be competitive, so I need to rise above the drama that we went through
20:57in order for me to survive this and win this.
21:00Hello.
21:04What's up?
21:06I'm ready for Bryant Park.
21:07How's it going, Bryant?
21:09I listened to what Tim said.
21:11I'm really confident in my collection.
21:13It's definitely something they haven't seen from me, but at the same time,
21:17they're going to know exactly whose it is.
21:19Is this what they call the heaven, um, the heavenly bed?
21:23It looks heavenly to me.
21:24Yeah.
21:25I wonder where Emilio is.
21:26Hi, Emilio.
21:30Surprise.
21:31Yeah.
21:32Were you guys hiding from me?
21:33You know, I'm like, well, I guess...
21:34What came out of that home visit with Tim was not to make the collection too old.
21:40The collection that Tim will see at Bryant Park is not the collection that he saw hanging on the rack.
21:44You look slimmer.
21:46What happened?
21:47I told him he lost two pounds.
21:49Bitch, what you do?
21:50You're okay?
21:51I didn't do anything.
21:52I got my normal set up.
21:53Wow.
21:53I can hear it.
21:55Mila.
21:55Tim.
21:56How are you?
21:57Good.
21:58Great to see you.
21:59To give you a fashion kiss.
22:00Fashion kiss.
22:01How are you, Seth Aaron?
22:03Jay.
22:04Tim.
22:06Co-excited for that.
22:10Emilio, how are you?
22:11Good to see you.
22:13Well, I am thrilled, thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to be with all of you.
22:17And how exciting is this?
22:19I want to officially welcome you to the Westin, New York at Times Square and the presidential suite.
22:25How fabulous is this?
22:26Beautiful.
22:27Is this not incredible?
22:27Amazing.
22:28And you're about two blocks from Bryant Park where Emilio and Seth Aaron, we know you're going to be
22:33showing.
22:34And Mila and Jay, you're going to be battling it out.
22:37And as you probably deduced, tomorrow morning you're going to be in the work room.
22:44So enjoy tonight and enjoy your Westin heavenly bed because it may be the only night you're in it.
22:52And keep in mind too, only three of you are going to be in the suite all week.
22:57All right.
22:58Let's pop a bottle of champagne and have a toast to all four of you.
23:02All right.
23:07May the best designer win.
23:12I can't wait to hit the work room tomorrow.
23:14I am so close to my dream.
23:18This would be something so fantastic that would change my life.
23:30Ladies first.
23:31Wow.
23:32Wow.
23:32That's huge.
23:34This is a work room.
23:35There's only three spaces.
23:37You just got paint.
23:38Oh, you guys got to fight it out.
23:40We're sharing a table for God's sake.
23:42Wow, there's not a whole lot of space here.
23:44It's frustrating.
23:46This is going to be a tight space.
23:48Yes, it is.
23:49Good thing we're talking to each other now.
23:51Right?
23:53Oh, look, it's Tim.
23:54Good morning, designers.
23:55Good morning, Tim.
23:56Tim.
23:57Welcome to the Bluefly workspace in the 1407 Broadway building.
24:01Just to recap, Seth Aaron and Emilio, you are moving forward
24:05to Fashion Week.
24:06And Mila and Jay, the two of you, will be competing for a space
24:10at New York Fashion Week.
24:12And you will be presenting your three strongest looks to the judges
24:16who will determine which one of you will move forward.
24:19And the judge's decision will be made today.
24:23Wow.
24:24Whoa.
24:25Whoa.
24:25What the ?
24:28Are you kidding me?
24:30I had no idea it was going to be like, bam, straight away,
24:33this morning, first thing.
24:35So for the two of you, this is a runway day.
24:37You will have three hours to fit your models and send them to hair and makeup
24:42and get ready for your presentation.
24:44Wow.
24:45I'm going to be sending in your Muse models very shortly.
24:48And your two other models for your two other looks have been pre-assigned to you.
24:52So go, go, go.
24:54Oh my God, this is crazy.
24:55It's crazy.
24:57I mean, three hours to go through fittings when I've really not seen my clothes on people before.
25:06Hi.
25:07I'm going to die.
25:08We're showing today.
25:09I'm like shaking.
25:10I'm so nervous now.
25:11So undress.
25:13Let's try some stuff on you.
25:14What I'm concerned about is the center of the centering of the band.
25:28The shin guards won't zip all the way up Britney's legs.
25:32This is a key piece that I want to show the judges.
25:34It's the only accessory I've designed for the collection.
25:37I see Jay's looks kind of out of the corner of my eye and he's got color.
25:44Okay.
25:46Not good for me.
25:49Mila and Jay, I'm sending you and your models to the L'Oreal Paris makeup room in the Garnier
25:54hair salon.
25:55And when you return from hair and makeup, you'll be prepping your models for the runway.
25:59So use the blueboy.com wall very thoughtfully.
26:02I want to do a pullback and then maybe just pull really clean and then pull it all the
26:10way here and then I want to braid it.
26:14I want it as clean and polished as possible.
26:17Because I'm feeling insecure about the lack of color in my three looks, I decide that I'm going
26:23to show some color in the model's faces and through the makeup.
26:28I would love if you could do like a smoky, strong, aubergine eye.
26:33Aubergine color's really going to blend beautiful with the cheek.
26:36Oh, that's beautiful, yeah.
26:38Let the games begin.
26:39Exactly.
26:40Designers and models and Mila and Jay specifically, in five minutes we're going down to the runway.
26:47I'll be back, thank you.
26:49This is it, we're getting our outfits on.
26:52I get chills when I think about the fact that I am this close to being at Bryant Park.
26:58This is, this was a dream of mine almost 20 years ago.
27:02That's your little bitchy bolero.
27:05Designers and models, this is it.
27:08We're going down to the runway.
27:09For me to not be able to make it through this round, I would be so devastated because it's,
27:15I've worked so hard for it.
27:17I've had dreams about this collection walking the runway at Bryant Park.
27:24I can't imagine not going forward.
27:26Here we go.
27:30Coming up on Project Runway.
27:32Who do you want to see at New York Fashion Week?
27:34Oh, I don't know.
27:35That's a tough one, guys.
27:45Hello.
27:45Hi.
27:46Hi.
27:46Jay, Mila, welcome back to New York and welcome back to the runway.
27:51The two of you are here to compete for the final spot at Fashion Week.
27:56We asked you to choose the three strongest looks from your collections for us to judge.
28:00Today we will determine which one of you will be out and which one of you will go to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
28:06All right, let's say hello to the judges.
28:08Top American designer, Michael Kors.
28:10Hey, guys.
28:11Hi.
28:11Hi.
28:12And fashion director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
28:15Hello.
28:16Hi.
28:16Hi, Nina.
28:17Both of you are very talented, otherwise you would not be sitting here.
28:21We really believe in you and we hope that you blow us away today.
28:25All right, let's start the show.
28:34My collection, it's very much my point of view that the judges have seen, but there's also a few surprises
28:40thrown in there.
28:41There's the Mila that we know and love, and there's something that we didn't expect from her.
29:08There's an innovation factor too in my collection.
29:22Every single piece is editorial, exciting.
29:24They're just so fresh.
29:25They're just so new.
29:41Fashion designers, they need to move things forward, not backwards.
29:44And I have what it takes to do that.
29:58Today, Mila, one of you will be showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
30:03And one of you will be out.
30:07Let's bring out your models.
30:08Mila, my inspiration is the shadow, mysterious, and the shapes that shadows create, light and dark
30:20patterns, and this is what I came up with.
30:22I actually like those three pieces.
30:24It definitely shows your design.
30:27They're all different, but still they're cohesive.
30:30I would want to wear all of these pieces because they're all simple, but with a little twist.
30:34When she walked out, I'm like, not only is the look very Mila, she's kind of made up to look very Mila.
30:41It's got a very 60s vibe to it, and I like that.
30:46I know they're your clothes, but the toughest thing in the world is when you have a look,
30:52which is great, but at the same time, there has to be a surprise.
30:55That's a tricky thing.
30:57To get it to look less retro, I think the girls need to look a little rougher.
31:04Their hair and makeup could look edgier, and I think you have to think about how a modern
31:08girl wants to get dressed.
31:10That's really important, but the construction on the clothes looks fantastic.
31:15I love that you thought about separates.
31:17That's very smart, but I'd love to see you push a little more on the modern side.
31:24I'm not surprised to see black and white because I know that you use a lot of black and white,
31:28but I wonder what would happen when you would have to do six collections a year.
31:35How are you going to make so many collections with that just very narrow point of view?
31:40I do want you to know that there is a little bit of color in my 10-look collection.
31:44All right.
31:45Did you make those gloves?
31:47I designed them, and I had them made.
31:48They're great.
31:49I think the gloves are a styling thing that actually does have some bite and some edge,
31:55and makes them look a little bit more modern.
31:57I had the rings made, too, out of steel.
32:00The jewelry is fantastic.
32:01Yeah, great.
32:04The cowl neck, is that part of the coat?
32:07It's an accessory that I made.
32:09It looks great.
32:09I even like it better with that.
32:11The statement is very you, and congratulations.
32:14The Japanese samurai became my inspiration, but I wanted to feminize it,
32:20instead of creating all these masculine details.
32:23I have to say, you really pumped up the volume this time.
32:26That's what I wanted to do.
32:28I think this black trouser she's wearing is fabulous.
32:31I love the dress.
32:32I think there's a lot of work in these clothes.
32:34I love all the pleating, the seaming.
32:37I love these gaiters that she has on.
32:39Can I see the side?
32:41They're great.
32:42I love that the gaiters and the pants pull it together.
32:45Smart move.
32:47I think, Jay, you always have excellent tailoring.
32:51It is great that you are innovative.
32:54You have a great pant there, but then you have that silver shirt,
32:59and then you have that weird thing here.
33:02It's a lot.
33:04And at the end of the day, you want it to be elegant.
33:06You want one standout piece.
33:08You don't need a whole bunch of standout pieces,
33:11because that's only going to compete.
33:13My favorite look is this look, because it's the cleanest.
33:17Yes, you've decorated it and it's tailored, but it's clean.
33:21You've got to edit down.
33:22Yes.
33:23I have to say I like what you did.
33:25You really designed and you thought about it.
33:28I love this dress.
33:29You know I love short dresses.
33:31You'd wear that dress in a heartbeat.
33:32For sure.
33:33I love these chin garters.
33:35Chin garters.
33:36They should be up to here and then they should be attached to the garter belt.
33:38Only if you're Heidi Klum.
33:41I'm not 100% sure how cohesive it is, because there's a lot of different fabrics and a lot
33:46of different design ideas happening at the same time.
33:49You know, the other thing that I have to say that I admire, there's nothing about these clothes
33:56that's retro at all.
33:58Zero.
33:59These are not clothes that could have happened in any other time.
34:03And what happened with the gloves?
34:05Did you guys call each other on the gloves?
34:06You said, let's do gloves?
34:07We didn't really talk before this, by the way, at all, even throughout the challenges.
34:12And we managed to sort of get rid of the drama and focus on what's important.
34:17So you hated each other for the whole process and now you're dear friends.
34:20And now you're standing here.
34:21Now we're sharing a room.
34:24Hey, welcome to the fashion world.
34:26And now you're fighting for the last spot at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
34:30How lovely.
34:31I think that you two made it really hard for us to judge today.
34:35Very.
34:36Both of you.
34:37These clothes are made beautifully.
34:42All right, we're going to have a little chat.
34:44And then I'm going to bring you back.
34:46You can leave the runway.
34:47Thank you, guys.
34:48I would love to know from everyone now, who do you want to see at New York Fashion Week?
35:01Jay.
35:01I think Mila.
35:03I'm on the fence.
35:05Both Mila and Jay have something to say as designers.
35:10When I look at Mila, the clothes that she showed us today were beautifully constructed,
35:16well-designed, beautifully made, but it's straightforwardly retro.
35:21And it's not even a question of the black and white.
35:25But can she really surprise you?
35:28Yes, surprises.
35:29I don't think it's necessarily wrong to do 60s retro if you have your own twist to it, which she does.
35:35I do have to say, Jake, he had some spot-on pieces.
35:42He had some really fabulous ideas in there.
35:45Yes.
35:45That dress was perfect.
35:48The leather gaiters that were worn with the jacket.
35:50They're fantastic.
35:51I have to say, my least favorite was the jacket that Brittany was wearing.
35:54Yes.
35:55I mean, that was overworked.
35:56Kill the jacket altogether.
35:57Kill the jacket altogether.
35:58Throw it out.
35:59Well, there's a fabulous Yiddish word called ungepachki.
36:03Ungepachki.
36:04Ungepachki.
36:05It means it's like too much, overly decorated.
36:08Ungepachki.
36:09Ungepachki.
36:10For sure.
36:12I'm worried that Jay will look over-designed,
36:15and I think that Mila will be classy to the point.
36:19There's one thing, though, that you have to remember.
36:22It's better to start with too much and reduce and edit.
36:27But we're not starting.
36:28We're at the end.
36:29Edit it down.
36:30This is the slot.
36:31You going to New York Fashion Week or you're not going to New York Fashion Week?
36:33Seriously?
36:34If you took those black pants-
36:36You're redesigning right now.
36:37Well, that's what designers do.
36:39I'm changing it until 10 minutes before.
36:41I know, but he's supposed to be the designer.
36:42He is supposed to be the designer.
36:44Do not redesign.
36:46Oh, I don't know.
36:47It's a tough one, guys, because this is really about curiosity.
36:51Are we curious to see more?
36:54Do they have more to say?
36:55I think I might be turning around.
36:58So, have we made our decision?
37:06Yes.
37:07Yeah.
37:07All right, let's bring them back out.
37:18Mila, Jay, one of you will be showing at Fashion Week, and one of you.
37:26We'll be out.
37:37Mila, Jay, one of you will be showing at Fashion Week,
37:42and one of you will be out.
37:48Both of you have done a really great job, and this was a really tough decision.
37:52You both can be very proud.
37:56Mila, the looks that you showed us were impeccable.
37:59They also showed us your very distinct point of view as a designer.
38:03While we were impressed, we were a little bit worried that your line might be one note and two retro.
38:11Jay, you had some very intriguing and fashion-forward ideas, which showed us that you're very innovative.
38:19But your work seemed over-designed. You just tried to do maybe too much.
38:25The final question that we had to ask ourselves was which one of you is more ready to show at
38:31Bryant Park this week. Who do we want to see more of?
38:37Mila?
38:46Congratulations. You're going to Fashion Week.
38:50Oh, my God. Thank you so much.
38:52Oh, thank you so, so much. This means the world to me.
39:00I'm sorry, Jay. That means you're out.
39:11Thank you guys so much. It means a lot to me, the feedback you guys gave me.
39:16I'll take it, and I'll be a better designer.
39:22Great designer.
39:30I'm numb. I'm shocked to find out that I'm no longer going to Bryant Park.
39:36Well?
39:37I'm out.
39:38Oh.
39:38Oh.
39:39I'm sorry.
39:41Don't cry, Papi. Don't cry.
39:45One tip.
39:47Big tip.
39:47Big tip.
39:48Please.
39:48Big tip.
39:49Hair, makeup, styling.
39:51Keep it young.
39:52And modern.
39:53Understood.
39:54Congratulations.
39:57You can leave the runway.
40:02This just means, it just means the world to me.
40:07Congratulations.
40:08Hi, thank you.
40:09I'm just like, and it just means that, it just means that I'm one step closer to my dream coming
40:19true that I've always had of being a fashion designer and creating.
40:24That was a fabulous, fabulous presentation by both of you. I am just extraordinarily proud, and it could have gone either way.
40:37Being on Project Runway, I consider it as a validation.
40:40So, Jay, I have to send you to the work room to clean up your space.
40:45It's a fabulous, fabulous presentation.
40:48There's nothing you should regret at all.
40:50Nothing.
40:50Go ahead.
40:51Why would I?
40:52I've proven to the whole entire world that I can design amazing clothes, and I'm thankful for this experience.
