00:00I'm Ramon Lawrence, 30 years old from Chicago, Illinois.
00:09I have to say I've always been a really ambitious person.
00:12I went to med school specializing in neurosurgery
00:16and towards the end decided that it was one thing to have a career that I could be really great at,
00:22but it was another thing to have a career that I could be passionate about.
00:26Oh my God. I want to be that person that somebody can look at and say,
00:31here's somebody that really did something against the grain and I can do that too.
00:37Ramon? Logan.
00:39Johnny, where are you guys from?
00:40L.A.
00:41Seattle.
00:42I'm definitely different than a normal fashion designer.
00:44I don't know, I'm more of a guy's guy, I guess.
00:47My limo breaks down on the way to New York Fashion Week.
00:50I probably pop the hood and figure out what's wrong with it.
00:54I am a strong sewer. I am a strong pattern maker.
00:57Anything that I'm working on with my hands, I'll figure out.
01:00So, it's going to be fun.
01:01We tried it out three times.
01:02Yep.
01:03Three times before.
01:04I know why I didn't make the third and the fourth season.
01:06Why?
01:07Because I had an addiction problem.
01:09I used to have a crystal meth addiction and it was probably the darkest time of my life.
01:15If I wouldn't have overcame the addiction, I think I would probably be dead.
01:20You know, he battled back from that and I was ready to go.
01:22The only way you can really go from here is up and this right here is a big step.
01:26So, whatever happens is going to happen.
01:28I'm just going to do my best.
01:31If you give me a sheep, I can make you a sweater.
01:35I was born in former Yugoslavia in a place where people are raising potatoes and corn, you know, for a living and then being crazy about fashion on top of it.
01:44It just didn't go very well together.
01:46Welcome to my little shop called Goga.
01:48I'm in this competition for all the girls out there who have big dreams, but they are starting with small steps.
01:55Oh.
01:56Hey.
01:57Hey.
01:58Hey.

02:13Nice to meet you.
02:14It's all sizes.
02:15All shades.
02:16I don't call it plus size.
02:17I call it plus sexy.
02:18Oh, yeah.
02:19This is nice.
02:22My name is Sherin Asghari.
02:23It means sweet and Farsi.
02:25Hey.
02:26I've been working a lot with things that function as more than one thing.
02:32The cool thing about this coat is that it has a hidden waist zipper.
02:36Two outfits in one.
02:38I'm ready to be thrown into a bigger pond, and I think that Project Runway is it.
02:42So, bring it on.
02:45Basically, I'm known in New York City as the feather prince.
02:49My friends joke around about me.
02:51They say, Nick, all you'd use is chiffon, lace, feathers, and champagne.
02:55Oh, the sparkle is fabulous.
02:57I've worked with Victoria's Secret, Keith Lissner.
03:00I did a custom gown for Marquesa, which was on the cover of Vogue magazine.
03:05I've worked very hard to be here, and hopefully I will make it to the final three and then win.
03:10Hey.
03:11Hey.
03:12I'm Nicholas.
03:13I'm Nicholas.
03:14Nice little.
03:15Good to see you.
03:16I graduated from school in fashion design, but right now I'm working more in the business side of fashion.
03:20I do know what a woman likes, I do know what fits a woman, and I definitely know what sells.
03:25Hi.
03:26Hi.
03:27Hi.
03:28Hi.
03:29How are you?
03:30Mitchell.
03:31Mitchell.
03:32Where are you guys from?
03:33New York.
03:34New York.
03:35And Minnesota.
03:36Oh, Minnesota.
03:37Yeah.
03:38Minnesota boy.
03:39I try to channel any kind of creative option.
03:42Hello, fabric.
03:43What would you like me to make you into today?
03:45Hello?
03:46I'm really into the idea of transformative clothing that would go into a tent that would
03:53also have water purification systems and you would be comfortable in it.
03:56Hi.
03:57Hi.
03:58I'm Erin.
03:59Hi.
04:00Nice to meet you.
04:01I'm Althea.
04:02I'm Irina.
04:03I'm 26 and I'm from New York City.
04:05This is hand-tooled leather and Princess really is the inspiration of every tote I make
04:11and every handbag because she's a lazy little girl and she loves to be carried.
04:18I'm Irina.
04:19Irina?
04:20Yeah.
04:21Louise.
04:22Nice to meet you.
04:23Welcome to our humble abode.
04:24Let's go check out the closets.
04:25I'm actually kind of surprised that we're not in New York.
04:28No, LA's garment district is like seven times bigger than New York's.
04:31Really?
04:32Just huge.
04:33I don't know if you remember me or not, but like four years ago when I first moved to
04:37Charleston, you let me sell dresses in Go-Go.
04:40Oh my God.
04:41I remember.
04:42Surprise.
04:43If you were a woodland fairy and you had to go to a gala, you would wear one of my dresses.
04:49Pixie meets cocktail party.
04:52So South Carolina is going to be proud of us.
04:54Yes.
04:55I surprise people a lot.
04:56I'm blonde.
04:57I'm from the South.
04:58People don't usually attach those things to like intelligence or just, I don't know,
05:05things.
05:06Sorry, I lost my train of thought.
05:09How old are you guys?
05:10I'm 26.
05:11Oh.
05:1229.
05:1325.
05:14My oldest son just turned 26.
05:15What?
05:16What?
05:17For years I've been dressing windows.
05:19Now I really need to like jump back into my fashion.
05:22That's Lee Chai and Ila and it's my wife, Alicia.
05:25Family is very important to me.
05:26I want the best for them.
05:27I'm here today because of them.
05:29Oh, we got milk.
05:30Oh, there's milk.
05:31There's milk.
05:32Dear designers, welcome to the title guarantee building lofts in Los Angeles.
05:37The home of this season's project.
05:38Woo.
05:39Please unpack and join Tim and me on the roof for a celebratory toast.
05:44Love Heidi.
05:45Heidi.
05:46Sweet.
05:47Toast time.
05:48To the roof.
05:49To the roof.
05:50Here we go, kids.
05:54Hi, everybody.
05:55Hi.
05:56Hi.
05:57Designers, I want to welcome you to Los Angeles.
05:59We have beautiful weather.
06:00Unfortunately, you won't be seeing any of that because you will be working all the time.
06:05Now you may recognize this distinguished and very handsome man right next to me.
06:10This is Tim Gunn.
06:11He's the Chief Creative Officer for Liz Claiborne.
06:15He will be your mentor for this season of Project Runway.
06:19Thank you, Heidi.
06:20Welcome, designers.
06:21Out of the thousands of designers that we considered, the 16 of you have proven that you have the talent
06:26and the passion to be standing here.
06:28Woo!
06:29Yay!
06:30Yeah.
06:31While you're in Los Angeles, you'll be working out of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design
06:35and Merchandising in Los Angeles, or FIDM, the leading fashion institution of this city.
06:40So shall we celebrate?
06:41Yeah!
06:42Woo!
06:43So I want to know where everyone is from.
06:46Tanks.
06:47Tanks.
06:48And your hair's not real big at all.
06:51My name is Louise Black, and I like vintage.
06:54I'm very inspired by, like, 1920s, 30s, 40s starlets.
06:59I'm ready for Project Runway.
07:01I'm ready for my close-up.
07:03I think I come off as very androgynous.
07:05A lot of my designs speak towards masculine and feminine elements.
07:09I don't want to deprive or exclude anybody from my art.
07:13I like your hairstyle, too.
07:14I always find that very interesting to see how everyone dresses.
07:18Personal style.
07:19Yeah.
07:20So you know New York pretty well.
07:21Yeah.
07:22I just graduated.
07:23I'm going to move there.
07:24I'm Althea Harper.
07:25I'm from Dayton, Ohio, and I am 23 years old.
07:28I know that I can be the best designer in the whole world.
07:32I have no doubt in my mind.
07:34I interned at Alexander McQueen in Vivian Westwood.
07:37But the best thing ever was when my boss came up to me, and he's like, Althea, you're the best.
07:42And I was like, okay.
07:44I think we'll get along just fine.
07:46Oh, definitely.
07:47My name is Christopher Straub.
07:48I'm 29 years old from Shakopee, Minnesota.
07:50Due to a death in the family, I was never really able to go to college and go to design school.
07:55But I've worked on it by myself, and I think I've done pretty good without it.
07:59I'm pretty good at using the resources I have available to me, like this dress right here.
08:03This was probably about three yards, so it cost three dollars.
08:07I think that's pretty hot.
08:09I've always had this saying, and it says, someday you'll be amazing.
08:13And so this is my someday.
08:15Well, I hope that you enjoyed this little celebration.
08:18But unfortunately, now it's time for the little party to end, and for the work to begin.
08:23Get some sleep tonight, because early tomorrow morning, you're going to join me at a not-yet-revealed location.
08:30And that's where you'll learn about your first challenge.
08:33I wish you all good luck.
08:35Project Runway!
08:36Don't jump, don't jump.
08:45She's anticipating the first challenge.
08:47It's not going to be that bad.
08:49I hope it's a one-day challenge so I get the first run out of the way, because my stomach is, like, really tied up.
08:53I want to meet Michael Kors.
08:55All right, so let's go.
08:56Good morning, designers.
08:57Good morning.
08:58Welcome to the red carpet of the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre LA Live.
09:12Seeing the red carpet shook me up and, like, kind of made this whole experience real.
09:17In a matter of hours, this carpet will be covered with the work of designers like Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors, Donna Karan.
09:25This is where the best of the best showcase their work, because here it's as much about who you're wearing as who you are.
09:32So for your first challenge, you will create a red carpet look that demonstrates true innovation and represents your point of view as a designer.
09:42The red carpet comes in many flavors, from the Oscars and the Emmys to the Grammys and the Video Music Awards.
09:48Each different event opens a door for a different style, so don't limit yourself.
09:53All right, let's go.
09:55Our first challenge is the red carpet challenge, which is a challenge that I'm really, really excited about.
10:00Do you believe this?
10:01I'm working really hard for this one.
10:02I'm going to really try to push myself to the limit.
10:04Exciting, huh?
10:12Cool.
10:13Ooh, fancy.
10:14Designers, welcome to the work room of FIDM, and next door you'll find the sewing room, which is fully equipped with Brother sewing machines.
10:24For this first challenge, we pre-assigned a model for each of you, and that card contains her measurements, so that information is very important to you as you execute this challenge.
10:33Oh, she's got big feet like me.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Yeah.
10:37You have 30 minutes to sketch, then we're going shopping at Mood, where you'll have a budget of $200 and 30 minutes to shop.
10:44You have until midnight tonight and all day tomorrow to complete your look.
10:49And the winner of this challenge will have immunity for the next challenge.
10:53So I will be back in 30 minutes, and then we'll shop, shop, shop.
10:58Okay?
10:59Work hard.
11:05When Tim said red carpet, it popped into my head.
11:09It's got a lot of texture.
11:10It's got a belt on it to bring the volume in, and I love it.
11:14I don't watch the red carpet.
11:16I don't differentiate between different colored carpets.
11:18Like, all I know is that I will design something that will make whoever's going to wear it feel completely treasured.
11:25What if we don't sketch?
11:29I don't sketch.
11:31I just kind of try to meditate on the mood of where the garment will be and who will be wearing it, and then I decide.
11:39All right, designers, time is up.
11:42Grab everything that you need and follow me to Mood.
11:45Let's go, go, go.
11:46All right, designers, you have 30 minutes to shop.
11:52You're off.
11:55I think the style I'm going for is this weird, bulbous, like, hexagonal tessellation forms that catch the light.
12:06This is, like, impossible.
12:07Just give me, um, two yards of that.
12:09I love pressure.
12:10Give me as much pressure as you can give me, and I will make something beautiful.
12:14Designers, five minutes remaining.
12:16Tim!
12:17Tim, we can't fight.
12:18He's the only person cutting.
12:19Can I cut it myself?
12:20You're going to pay for the scissors?
12:21I'll pay for my scissors.
12:22I need it.
12:23Cut it yourself?
12:24I'm cutting myself.
12:25You go, Crystal.
12:26Sure, I'll do whatever I gotta do.
12:27Oh, my God.
12:28I love to watch old movies.
12:29My garment is going to be very much more old Hollywood glamour.
12:32No, no, no, no, no.
12:34Whatever.
12:35Designers, time is up.
12:37Oh, my God.
12:38That was intense.
12:39Thank you, Mood.
12:40Thank you!
12:44Look at this.
12:45We're here.
12:48Alright, designers.
12:49I just want to remind you, innovation is key to this challenge, so be thinking about that.
12:55Okay.
12:56I'll see you later.
12:57Thanks.
12:58To have someone wearing one of my creations while walking down the red carpet is a lifelong
13:04dream.
13:05It's something that...
13:09Sorry.
13:10I'm trying not to actually cry.
13:12I think I'm going to change my whole design.
13:15You have to change it?
13:16I think I'm going to.
13:17What are you questioning?
13:18I don't get what you're questioning.
13:19No, I know, but sometimes I just, you know.
13:21No, you could.
13:22I watch all the television shows that cover the red carpet, and it's really where I found
13:27my love for fashion.
13:29Crap!
13:30I need to go get a seam ripper.
13:31What do you got going on there?
13:32What am I doing?
13:33I'm smocking.
13:34I don't even know what smocking means.
13:35Oh, like, tons and tons of lines, then you gather every single one of them.
13:39What if I should just go back to my original thing?
13:41Don't second guess yourself.
13:43Always go with your first instincts.
13:45Coming from an addiction standpoint, when you get into, like, a really stressful situation,
13:49you need someone there with you, some, like, your support structure.
13:52What the hell is wrong with me?
13:54I can't go home to the person that I draw my most support from.
13:58I feel lost and overwhelmed right now.
14:00I feel like I'm, like, completely lost, and this has never happened before.
14:07I can tell Johnny's really stressed and been struggling all day, and I really hope he can pull through.
14:12I just, I just, I'm feeling horrible, so I just want to go to sleep for a while.
14:15Okay.
14:18Johnny really doesn't have anything to prove to anyone else.
14:21It seems like he has something to prove to himself, maybe.
14:23I don't know where I am right now.
14:25I really don't.
14:26I'm feeling really, really emotional at this point.
14:28I'm almost to a point to where, uh, I kind of want to throw in the towel.
14:32I just know my limits, and I feel like I've reached one right now.
14:36I just never thought it would be like this.
14:38Coming up on Project Runway.
14:39This is going to look like a halter diaper.
14:40Mmm.
14:41Johnny, what's going on?
14:42I just don't want to fail again.
14:43It's been a difficult road for me, and, you know, coming out of an addiction, and it's
15:07hard.
15:08I feel like there's too much pressure on my shoulders, and I do feel like I want to leave.
15:13Johnny, what's going on?
15:15I've sketched four different things, and I hate them.
15:18I completely hate them.
15:19But are you being too hard on you?
15:22That's my question.
15:23You know, coming through all the drugs and everything.
15:26I just don't want to fail again.
15:27Nor do I want you to.
15:28This part of me feels like I'm really not ready, and I feel emotionally obliterated.
15:43But, you know, this is very emotional.
15:45It's emotional for me.
15:46I mean, it's emotional for you.
15:47It really is.
15:48It's been so hard.
15:49I mean, you've overcome so much, and I know how talented you are.
15:55And you know something, Johnny?
15:56You can do it.
15:57I appreciate your work.
15:59Anyway.
16:00You can't really explain how it feels to have Tim Gunn sit there and talk you through something.
16:05He made me feel like he really wants you to succeed no matter what.
16:09You're going to make it work.
16:10And you will.
16:11I hope so.
16:12Okay.
16:13You're going to be fine.
16:14I really do appreciate it.
16:17Tim's a god, everyone, just so you know.
16:20Okay, I'm done, really.
16:21I'm done acting the fool.
16:26I'm doing a corded bodice, so the detail kind of shapes the body.
16:31Oh, my God.
16:32That's gorgeous.
16:33Thanks, buddy.
16:34My dress is ineffable.
16:36You can't really describe what it is.
16:38No one can really ever describe the type of garments I do.
16:41There's not a vocab for them yet.
16:43I like the idea of creating my own textures, my fabric, rather than buying it.
16:48I also spend a lot of time doing that, and that might get me in the end, but it won't
16:52get me now.
16:53All right.
16:54Time to go.
16:55Come on, guys.
16:56You gotta go.
16:57You gotta go.
16:58Okay.
16:59Off.
17:05I woke up this morning happier.
17:07You don't throw in the towel when you have these opportunities.
17:10You don't give up.
17:11I need to swallow it down.
17:12I need to be strong.
17:13And whatever happens on the runway, happens on the runway.
17:16Here we go.
17:17This is how they teach you to do at school?
17:24Yeah.
17:25That's one thing I wish I was able to do, go to designing school.
17:29Just to really learn all that stuff.
17:32Like, people are talking about smocking, and I've never heard that before.
17:35And what she's doing on the side.
17:37Go day?
17:38Go day?
17:39Yeah.
17:40I've never heard of that.
17:41It doesn't matter that I didn't have the education to teach me how to pleat and to make a bustle.
17:47I really had to jump in there and really learn how to get things done.
17:51Actually, this dress isn't going to be very much sewn of anything.
17:54I'm going to spit on it and use gum.
17:56Christopher.
17:57Tim.
17:58Talk to me.
17:59I like to play with volume.
18:00Okay.
18:01I like to be young, funky, punk.
18:04You're bringing a polish and a sophistication to this.
18:08Okay.
18:09But I'll be blunt with you.
18:10Not styled correctly, this could go cruise line cocktail waitress.
18:14It could look awful.
18:15Yeah.
18:16Okay.
18:17So how's your Desec dome, Mary?
18:20Uh, it's almost done.
18:23Give me five more minutes.
18:25Where's it going?
18:26I don't know what you mean.
18:27Well, what's it going to look like?
18:29It's basically a halter dress with a large hood.
18:33Something like this.
18:35Forgive me, but I'm worried that this is going to look like a halter diaper.
18:38Mmm.
18:39I'm not too worried.
18:40Okay.
18:42I believe.
18:45The whole idea is to do things that are, like, architectural elements.
18:48Tell me what you're doing in the back.
18:50I don't want to give her a big butt.
18:52So it might be sculptural around it.
18:54I don't know.
18:55Yeah, the big butt factor is a big butt.
18:58I have a shake gun.
19:00Tim, please.
19:01Tim.
19:02Talk to me about what it is.
19:03This is going to be all smocked all the way down to there.
19:06This was the hard part because it was contouring to her body.
19:08I think this is going to be a little bit easier to do.
19:11There's a heavy Victorian feeling to it.
19:13Right, yes.
19:14Yeah.
19:15It's interesting to think about making it 2009.
19:17Right.
19:18Thank you, Mitchell.
19:19Thank you, Tim.
19:21I'm still going for the Oscars, but I'm going to have to change to the Emmys.
19:25Why?
19:26Because I really wanted a really dramatic bottom.
19:28You don't think this is dramatic?
19:30But is it dramatic in a good way to you?
19:36Okay, your paws are too long.
19:38No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
19:39You're never at a loss of words.
19:40I don't want you to ask me that.
19:42I want you to ask yourself that.
19:44All right, thank you.
19:46Designers, I am sending in your models for a fitting.
19:49You will have one hour with them, so figure it all out.
19:53Hi.
19:54Yeah.
19:55For the ride of your life.
19:56You're so cute.
19:57This right here is what I want for everything that you do for me.
20:00Okay, sorry, I'm like strangling you.
20:04My model sizes are horribly wrong.
20:07They did not match up with the model card.
20:10I am going to have to rework everything and try and figure out what I'm going to do.
20:15Nicholas, I'm taping it on her.
20:21Designers, your fitting time is up.
20:23Oh, my God.
20:25Thanks again.
20:26Nice meeting you.
20:27Hi.
20:28All right, designers, you have until midnight tonight to finish your look.
20:32And I say that because you will have mere nanoseconds tomorrow.
20:35It's going to be a very busy day.
20:37Good night.
20:38Make it work.
20:39You got this.
20:40Right?
20:41I'm so psyched.
20:42Dang, you did a lot of work, girl.
20:44You know what?
20:45Aries outfit is interesting, but I don't know what red carpet she was doing.
20:49You got pants you're talking to?
20:50It's going to, yeah, I'm going to have to make those right now.
20:53Right now, all I have is a collar.
20:59If I'm the first one to go home, I'm going to feel really, really, really stupid.
21:03It's midnight.
21:04Get your stuff.
21:05Let's go.
21:06Let's go.
21:07Coming up on Project Runway.
21:09Oh, this is adorable.
21:11Change of plans.
21:12I'm stitching you into this dress.
21:13He's basically sending down a nude model.
21:16Mitchell.
21:17This is a first for Project Runway.
21:19I'm in big trouble.
21:29So how do you guys think you're going to do?
21:31I don't know.
21:32We'll see.
21:33I felt like my creativity was going to have to, like, I was going to have to fight for people to understand where I was coming from in a way.
21:40I personally appreciate the more conceptual fashion.
21:45And I think Ari has a point of view that's valid.
21:52Do it, girl.
21:54Let's go be seen on the runway.
21:57It's the morning of the runway show, and people are stressing out.
22:10Oh .
22:11Your heart's beating so fast.
22:12You're like, this isn't normal.
22:14All right, this should be good.
22:16I am very nervous.
22:18There's all these talented and skillful designers, but, you know, I did something very different.
22:22And I feel very confident that it will do well.
22:27My dress, I had got it prepared to put on the model.
22:30And when she came in, she was five inches bigger.
22:32So I am going to rework everything.
22:35The actual fabric that I have left over, it's very, very similar to pantyhose.
22:39I'm in big, big trouble.
22:41Good morning, designers.
22:46Good morning.
22:47You will have two hours to send your models to the Garnier hair studio and L'Oreal Paris makeup room.
22:56Please use the Macy's accessory wall generously.
23:00All right, I will see you later.
23:02Yay!
23:03There's my model!
23:04Girl, you're looking good!
23:05Okay, so, change of plans.
23:08Like, I'm stitching you into this dress.
23:10Okay, no problem.
23:11Can you handle that?
23:12I can handle anything.
23:13Okay.
23:14This really has to come up with something last minute.
23:18And when I say last minute, I mean, like, backstage last minute.
23:22He's basically sending a nude model down the runway.
23:26I think this is a first for Project Runway.
23:29This is getting stitched all over her and this is getting cut short.
23:33Yeah.
23:34Is that a good plan?
23:35I think it's a plan.
23:40A little bit of a cat eye, not too severe.
23:43As long as it's got a glow to it.
23:48I'm trying not to damage your hair.
23:53Designers, you have ten more minutes with your models.
23:56And if there's any degree of ambivalence about this, your models must be in their runway look when we leave.
24:02Ten minutes and it's a hard out.
24:06You got it.
24:07You got it.
24:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:09I have a gown to send down the runway.
24:11Somehow it happened, but I'm really worried about what Heidi, Nina Garcia, and especially Michael Kors is going to say about my naked model.
24:21Designers and models, this is it.
24:25Everyone follow me, please.
24:27I do not care what state of repair or disrepair people are in.
24:32Mitchell.
24:33Coming.
24:34I need you.
24:35Logan.
24:36We're going to the runway.
24:38We did it.
24:41Coming up on Project Runway, we have a guest judge for you today who has spent a lot of time on the red carpet.
24:49I don't know if she's serious or not.
24:51Yeah, the front is a mess.
24:52She's going to get killed by the tablers.
24:54Hello, designers.
24:55Hi.
24:56Welcome to the runway.
24:57As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out.
25:11There are 16 of you here, and after tonight, there will be 15.
25:15For this challenge, you were asked to design a red carpet look, showing innovation and your true point of view.
25:22You had two days and $200 to put it together.
25:25All right, let's meet the judges.
25:27First, we have top American designer Michael Kors.
25:30Hey, guys. Welcome.
25:31Hi.
25:32Fashion director for Marie Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
25:35Hi, everyone.
25:36Nice meeting you.
25:37And we have a guest judge for you today who has spent a lot of time on the red carpet.
25:42Let's bring her out.
25:47It's Lindsay Lohan.
25:48How are you? Welcome.
25:50Good to see you.
25:52Actress, singer, and designer of her own line, 6126, Lindsay Lohan.
25:59Welcome.
26:04We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
26:07Let's start the show.
26:14I really wanted to come out strong with a really old Hollywood, glamorous look.
26:18That was my goal, and I feel so confident that I accomplished that.
26:24The only thought that I have watching my dress is that I do belong here.
26:29I am as good as anybody else, and I can pull it off if I need to.
26:37I'm pretty excited to see my dress down the runway.
26:39Any creator feels a little love when they see their product walk in the spotlight.
26:44It's not like stars haven't walked the red carpet half naked before or in sheer garments before, but the minute she turns around is when things get a little bit iffy.
26:58The dress looks fabulous.
27:01The only thing that's bugging me about it is I've done the two-tone color scheme, and the colors have just washed out completely, which isn't at all what I was going for.
27:15When I see my dress coming down the runway, it's the most amazing feeling, and I'm really overwhelmed by all the emotion put into it.
27:28So as Vanessa comes out, my first reaction is either they're going to love it or they're going to hate it.
27:44Do I think they'll love it? Yes, I do, because I love it.
27:47I think the dress completely expresses my voice as a designer.
27:55I wanted something elegant and chic because, you know, it is for a red carpet, and I love things that are dramatic and make people look twice.
28:01I feel very positive about my dress, but I've never had professional judges in front of me.
28:09Either you're in or you're out. That's pressure. Mad pressure.
28:19Seeing my dress, look down the runway, it looks fantastic, and the one thing that keeps going through my mind, because it is a long dress, just please don't trip. Don't trip. Don't trip. Focus.
28:30My garment, I feel like, does not fulfill the stereotype of the typical red carpet gown.
28:41I definitely do feel like I stay true to myself, and I feel good about it.
28:49Seeing my design come down the runway is completely exhilarating.
28:52It just goes to show you that sometimes you're down, and all you've got to do is just wait for the right time and pick yourself back up and not give up.
29:00I feel like my dress is definitely innovative, and it's definitely appropriate for the red carpet.
29:10If I had to do it again, it really wouldn't change anything.
29:17I think it's great for the red carpet, but it makes me a little concerned because as she turns around, which is actually the most beautiful part of the dress,
29:25they didn't really look at it, and that makes me a little nervous.
29:30I feel like the judges will understand my look and where I'm coming from on it.
29:38My dress and my entire look really suits me as a designer.
29:43My garment looks amazing. My model is working it, and I keep looking over at the judges, and they seem to be liking it too.
29:55So I'm pretty confident that I will be okay today.
29:58If I call your name, please step forward.
30:06Sharon.
30:07Epperson.
30:08Jordana.
30:09Carol Hanna.
30:10Logan.
30:11Althea.
30:12Nicolas.
30:13Irina.
30:14Melvin.
30:15Luis.
30:16If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:25Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:26You can leave the runway.
30:27The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:32One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
30:33Let's bring out your models.
30:35Crystal, what award show is she going to?
30:36Crystal.
30:37What award show is she going to?
30:38We are going to the model.
30:39To the model.
30:40If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:41You can leave the runway.
30:42The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:50One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
30:56Let's bring out your models.
30:58Crystal, what award show is she going to?
31:04we are going to the Emmys under the A's I also was thinking who would wear it so
31:09like Monty Cyrus Lindsay on hand so I just really wanted to have a sexy
31:14silhouette something youthful and powerful the way that you design the
31:18back and how it falls it is really beautiful so I think that that is going
31:22on the right path but the focus is gonna get taken off of the beauty of the back
31:25of the dress and everything's gonna get hammered just because of the front the
31:28front is a mess okay even the seam looks like it's crooked like it's pulling it
31:33ultimately looks a little schizophrenic like you glued two dresses together
31:36she's gonna get killed by the tabloids thank you Christopher where's your model
31:44going my model is going to the the video music Awards uh-huh I wanted to play with
31:49the juxtaposition of hard and soft I have to say I like this dress I just don't
31:53love that color of the soft material because it kind of looks dirty white to
31:57me but I think it looks hip and young thank you I wrote two words that don't
32:02go together cute and edgy the overall look is appropriate for what you were
32:07going for good idea thank you I like the fact that it has a dark romantic
32:14attitude to it I think it looks good thank you I also like this dress I would
32:19like less of the ruffles at the bottom I think but I like it thank you very
32:23much Roman I designed an evening gown for the pinnacle of the red carpet the
32:29Academy Awards Roman I like your dress very much thank you it's chic and I
32:34think it's well made but it's respectable pump it up and don't be afraid well do I
32:39can do that Lindsay what do you think I really like this dress I like how it
32:43falls in the back so I think that's always pretty on the red carpet it is
32:46safe with the color and everything but I like this dress it definitely looks much
32:51more expensive than $200 thank you okay I would like to continue with Aerie well I
32:57want to ask Aerie what red carpet is she walking the VMA is like 2080 I want her
33:06to also go and receive her Nobel Peace Prize on the same night I mean it sounds
33:10really wild but that's the kind of aesthetic that I was going for she looks
33:14like a disco soccer ball you know so somehow I think if you want to be that
33:19avant-garde you still have to find some kind of beauty in the oddity yeah it's a
33:24little out there it is out there I know it is a little out there but the person
33:31that's wearing has to love it more they definitely would have to you can make
33:34all you want but you got to make sure someone's gonna buy it I respect the
33:37fact that you have your own ideas and you want to experiment but there's got to
33:42be an awareness to what's acceptable and what's appropriate and yes too out
33:45there at the end of the day you have to have the public and want to wear your
33:51designs and not end up on the worst dress list yeah but I appreciate the fact
33:57that you have a very conceptual process of design yeah
34:04all right Johnny the idea was early 20s starlet who's obsessed with the 20s and
34:09she's going to a premiere of her new movie type of thing I wanted to keep the
34:12languid field and very liquidy so I'm actually very happy with the way it
34:16turned out I think it's very seductive it's not overly sexy I think there's
34:21something really wonderful and easy about this dress appreciate that thank you
34:27there's something that is that's very sexy about the blowback and then the V in
34:32the front and just how it kind of falls the color of the red was a little off for
34:37me the dress itself is so interesting that ultimately you didn't need an
34:41interesting color at all right I mean that dress in navy blue or black with
34:46no trim black would have been so chic definitely keep that in mind but you
34:51handle the fabric very well thank you very much Michael it's beautiful thank you
34:55I appreciate that Mitchell two days ago I embarked upon designing a dress for the
35:01Grammys so I spent a day and a half smoking an entire gown and when my model got
35:07there the measurements were off by about six inches you always know a model is
35:13never the age that she says she is or if they're too tall they make themselves
35:16shorter they're short they make themselves taller but I think even though it is
35:21completely sheer and completely unwearable there is an attitude about this
35:26that I liked that makes me wonder what else you can do obviously you were
35:33furiously trying to whip together something I was it looks whipped together
35:39she can't leave the house it's a kind of cool nightgown you know I could see it in
35:45the house you know with the glass of brandy in the fireplace going but I
35:49certainly cannot see it on the red carpet okay we've heard what you had to say
35:55we're gonna have a little chat and then we'll call you back you can leave the runway
36:00okay let's talk about the ones that we liked Romand's dress was safe but it
36:14was beautifully made in the right color and tweaked here and there I could
36:18definitely see it on the red carpet being a success he needs a little more
36:21confidence in himself to really push the envelope I think that his was the
36:27closest to making sense to the red carpet look that he imagined what do we
36:34think of Johnny Johnny's dress if you really pictured it in black but just a
36:39bun and like a really sexy sandal without the sequence I think the shape was
36:44really kind of cool yeah I could see a beautiful picture with that dress
36:48absolutely I have to say out of all the ones I would probably wear Christopher's
36:55I liked Christopher's at least it was a bit of youth to it I thought Christopher's
37:00dress was elegant and sharp but still had some bite to it yeah
37:06let's talk about the ones that we didn't like what did we think of crystal let's
37:12be honest the front of the dress was a nightmare and I was really nervous
37:17looking at hers about the taste level you know because we want creativity but we
37:22also really want to see someone who's got an eye
37:27how about airy I don't know if she's serious or not yeah that's the problem
37:32was it a joke to her I don't know it was just like it like speaking to somebody in
37:37another world in a weird way though her intense spaciness like you have to say
37:44to yourself I don't know like maybe like she's one of those designers that you
37:48think to yourself do I not get it maybe I'm not smart enough to get this
37:55what did we think of Mitchell well Mitchell of course gave us the fully
37:59transparent nightgown caftan yeah he screwed up with the model and and what he
38:06ended up with you know let's be honest no one could wear okay so we've made our
38:13decision I think so let's bring them back out
38:18one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
38:30one of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out
38:41johnny good job you're in you can leave the runway
38:51christopher
39:00congratulations we thought that your dress had a very nice balance of edgy and
39:14pretty and it would be perfect for the red carpet so good job thank you and you
39:19also have immunity for the next challenge you can leave the runway
39:21thank you even though I don't have the education the other people do I've earned
39:29my right to be here winning challenge number one so I'm hoping that I can keep
39:34it up and knock them down one by one
39:38Roman you're in you can leave the runway thank you
39:43crystal you're in you can leave the runway thank you thank you
40:01Arie Mitchell one of you will be out
40:12Arie we did not know what was going on with your look and we don't think that
40:18you did either it's one thing to aim outside of the box and another to miss it
40:24completely Mitchell we thought that your look was unwearable for the red carpet it
40:32was a sheer nightgown and in project runway there are no excuses
40:37Mitchell
40:40you're in you can leave the runway
40:54that means Arie you're out
41:05happy dozen thank you
41:10thanks guys
41:17oh where's my lights going someone's gotta be the first to leave project runway
41:23and it might as well be me
41:25so Arie I have to send you to the workroom to clean up your space
41:27okay not a problem
41:30best wishes Arie
41:33taking risks can be a good thing
41:35but you have to take risks responsibly
41:38I feel like I've learned that from this experience
