00:00:00This is a good party, it's a good party, oh my god.
00:00:10Hi, I'm Brandon, how are you?
00:00:13I can't believe it, this is real.
00:00:21Hi everyone, welcome to our new runway.
00:00:26This season's designers come to us from all across the world.
00:00:30They've designed for celebrities, operate custom shops and had their designs shown on international runways.
00:00:36Before we get started, we want to celebrate these designers.
00:00:40We ask each of them to bring a look from a past collection to introduce themselves to the fashion community
00:00:46and give us a preview of what's to come.
00:00:49This season, the designers will be judged by a remarkable panel, Nina Garcia.
00:00:54I recognize Nina Garcia, of course, she is a icon, she is Project Runway royalty.
00:01:00Elaine Welteroff.
00:01:02Elaine was the first African American woman to be the editor of Teen Wolf.
00:01:08She changed the game.
00:01:10Fashion designer, Brandon Maxwell.
00:01:12Brandon Maxwell is a young designer who has designed a dress for Michelle Obama.
00:01:18I mean, that's like a big mic drop moment right there.
00:01:21And our mentor for this season, Christian Siriano.
00:01:26I love Christian's aesthetic.
00:01:28Oh my god, his drama gowns and what he's done, red carpet.
00:01:32I think he's going to be able to give us some really valuable critiques.
00:01:35First impressions can make or break a designer.
00:01:39And this runway show will serve as your first impression of our designers.
00:01:44As well as their first impression of each other.
00:01:47You guys ready?
00:01:49Let's start the show.
00:01:51I work 40 hours a week in accounting at a bank.
00:02:06But the dream is to be a fashion designer and make beautiful clothes for beautiful women.
00:02:11Very cool.
00:02:12My design just came down the runway and the lights are on it and Nina's seeing it.
00:02:24I'm just like, that's me, that's me, over here, over here.
00:02:31Look how architectural that is.
00:02:32Yeah.
00:02:33Growing up in Syria, I said I want to be a fashion designer.
00:02:36And everyone looked at me like, what is this?
00:02:39In my designs, you see a lot of geometrical lines, very sculptural.
00:02:44Hey.
00:03:00Wow, I love a reveal.
00:03:04People could possibly see me as a threat because
00:03:06I recently just showed at New York Fashion Week.
00:03:09In my work, I do address gender stereotypes, racial stereotypes,
00:03:13and attempt to understand myself and who I am.
00:03:16Is that yours?
00:03:17Yeah.
00:03:18Stop.
00:03:19That was so good.
00:03:25It's bold.
00:03:26I like to design for women that are kind of shaped like me.
00:03:43I have seen other designers work with plus size models and it be foreign territory for them.
00:03:48It really means a lot to me to have a plus size model walk down the runway in something that hugs every curve that she's got.
00:04:00I would say that my design style is high fashion whimsy.
00:04:05I like to create pieces that make you think and make you laugh at the same time.
00:04:09I had jobs turn me down and I had people in the fashion world telling me that I wouldn't succeed.
00:04:18And I'm just here to show everyone that some weirdo with funny hair can like maybe be considered serious sometimes.
00:04:25Maybe.
00:04:26Maybe.
00:04:39That's my outfit.
00:04:40That is you.
00:04:50Too revealed.
00:04:56I love to do statement pieces, pieces that have a sense of flair, flow, lots of fabric, lots of rhythm.
00:05:10Who would have thought that this island boy growing up in Samoa, in a hut, would design something that was in LA Fashion Week, Australia Fashion Week, and in the Buckingham Palace.
00:05:37It's so well made.
00:05:56I'm a little intimidated seeing this runway show and all these looks come out.
00:06:00looks come out. Some of the looks aren't my personal aesthetics or taste, but I
00:06:06don't want to judge the other designers and their aesthetics too harshly yet.
00:06:13Thank you all for joining us to celebrate this new beginning of Project
00:06:17Runway. Designers, it's time for your first challenge.
00:06:23Oh, that's fun to say. I'm into that.
00:06:31At stake for the winner, a quarter of a million dollars supplied by Pilot Friction
00:06:36erasable pens. A feature in Elle magazine, $50,000 to put toward their own design
00:06:42studio, courtesy of Blueprint. And a career-changing mentorship with the
00:06:47Council of Fashion Designers of America. This is Project Runway.
00:06:53What do you think?
00:07:01My God.
00:07:02Can you believe it?
00:07:05Look at the accessories. Oh my God.
00:07:08Beautiful.
00:07:10Hi, Christian.
00:07:11Hi, guys.
00:07:13Hi.
00:07:15It's fabulous, right?
00:07:16Yes.
00:07:18I am not here to judge you guys. I am really here to help you, guide you,
00:07:22and obviously I've been in your shoes, so I know what it's like, and I promise you it'll
00:07:26make you all better designers in the end. You guys are going to have access to everything
00:07:30you see here. Top of the line sewing and embroidering machines from Brother, and Pilot
00:07:35Friction erasable pens for sketching.
00:07:37Awesome.
00:07:38Designers, you really remember the moment where all you wanted to do was live and breathe fashion.
00:07:43For your challenge today, your inspiration is going to come from four of the biggest names
00:07:49in fashion. And it's your judges. Brennan Maxwell, Nina Garcia, Elaine Waltroff, and the fabulous
00:08:01show you brought. All of us judges brought photos that represent the moments from our
00:08:08past when we recognized that fashion was our true passion in life. You'll each be assigned
00:08:14one of these images to serve as inspiration for your designs. I'll start with mine. This
00:08:20was the first time I was ever on a runway. I was 13 years old. It was the first time that
00:08:26I ever really felt the power of fashion and how that can impact how you feel in your own
00:08:31skin and the confidence that you wear. What about you, Brandon?
00:08:36This is a photograph of my mom.
00:08:38Hi.
00:08:39I know, right? This was a fashion show put on by my grandmother. She ran a clothing store.
00:08:43I grew up there my whole life under a clothing rack, so I had no other option but to become
00:08:47a designer. The power and confidence of the women that were in my life led me to make the
00:08:53clothes that I make now, so I don't know what you'll make of it, but I think it's going to
00:08:57be something great for sure.
00:08:58Nina, what about you? I grew up living in a small town in South America dreaming of being
00:09:06in fashion. I had an internship at a magazine, and this was the first shoot I actually stepped
00:09:14into. I knew then I loved the magazine world. This was my calling.
00:09:21And what about you, Elaine? I actually got my big break in the magazine industry at Ebony
00:09:28Magazine, and this was my very first cover shoot. This cover is the first time that I'd seen a
00:09:36woman of color celebrated for her curves, for her strength, and for her confidence. And
00:09:43it made me feel like I could do anything.
00:09:46Designers, for your challenge, take the fashion in the photo and evolve it into your own show-stopping
00:09:52garment.
00:09:53You're going to have 20 minutes now to work with your assigned judges. After that, you'll
00:09:57have 20 minutes to sketch.
00:09:59You guys are going to have two days to work on your garments before the first runway show.
00:10:03Two days. Earlier today, we saw the beautiful designs that you can make with all the time
00:10:08in the world. But now, you're on Project Runway. Time is not your friend, trust me.
00:10:14Right off the bat, it's a powerful challenge. I literally am like in my head being like,
00:10:21Coming up.
00:10:26Look at that.
00:10:29Think about Nina. That's the part when I'm freezing, when I'm thinking Nina.
00:10:33Come with me. We're going to be right over here. Stuck with me and my 13-year-old self.
00:10:48My mom, you don't know her, but she's someone who's not naturally great in front of a crowd.
00:10:53But my grandmother ran this store and she needed her to put on that suit and sell it.
00:10:58It just was a defining moment where I knew that I didn't want to do anything else.
00:11:04I have huge respect for Brandon Maxwell. I've seen Brandon's collection. It's timeless.
00:11:10I can relate to his aesthetic because I think the designs that I create are timeless pieces.
00:11:16I always come back to the central idea, which is trying to help women to feel their best
00:11:21through what I know how to do with my two hands, which I'm sure is what you guys love to do as well.
00:11:26I grew up in a really small town where there weren't a lot of people who were dreaming big.
00:11:30And so I was kind of too afraid to admit out loud that I wanted to work in magazines.
00:11:36Something told me to Google the editor-in-chief of Ebony. I emailed, I called every single day, really clicked.
00:11:43She invited me to work with her on set in L.A.
00:11:47And when I got the call sheet, it said, cover shoot Serena Williams.
00:11:51And I was like, what?
00:11:54The concept was to shoot Serena celebrating her curves.
00:11:57As a curvy black woman, it means a lot to me.
00:12:0113 years old is like not the most fun time to be a girl.
00:12:05I was feeling like so uncomfortable in my own skin, tall and awkward.
00:12:09But this was like a shining moment for me to be on that stage and to feel really confident with putting on these clothes.
00:12:18So if you could describe how you're feeling right here in one word.
00:12:22Optimistic.
00:12:23Carly is a superstar. And talking to her and learning about her, it sinks in at that moment.
00:12:28I'm really here at Project Runway.
00:12:30It's about how fashion makes you feel beyond just how you look wearing it.
00:12:35I was from South America. I was here as a student.
00:12:40And this was that deciding internship that kind of marked my life.
00:12:46What I learned from working there, it was to lean into my own personal experience and finding strength in being a Latina in the United States as opposed to trying to assimilate.
00:13:00Nina and I have a little bit of the same background. She's from Colombia. I'm from Colombia.
00:13:05I was working with the best designers in my country. I was doing really well, but I was looking for my own career.
00:13:13So I moved to the United States and it was a really rough time.
00:13:17For me, they look really happy. So maybe that can be like some point of inspiration.
00:13:22I do housekeeping and there's nothing wrong with these jobs, but if I win the competition, of course I'm going to quake to my job of housekeeper and I'm just going to focus in my dreams and that's all.
00:13:34Listen to that point of view that is different because that's where you're going to find your source of strength.
00:13:41All right, everybody. Time's up. Bye. Good luck.
00:13:45Thank you. Bye.
00:13:46Designers, come on over here and grab a comp card. These are going to be your models for the first challenge.
00:13:53Go ahead and you guys can find a spot and start sketching.
00:13:58Oh my God. I hit the model jackpot. I get Aviana, who is like beyond gorgeous.
00:14:02I literally could not be happier.
00:14:04It's really great because it's women of all shapes and sizes.
00:14:07It's important to know how to dress every type of woman because fashion should not be limited to someone who is tall and skinny.
00:14:13Dang, she's tiny.
00:14:15I immediately start thinking about when did I first really feel comfortable being in this industry.
00:14:21And I really felt comfortable when I stayed true to my own roots.
00:14:26My dad's a miller in a mill.
00:14:28My mom's a self-taught ceramicist and they both wear aprons.
00:14:32So I know that I want to incorporate the apron into my design in some way.
00:14:42Being a mother of nine children, I can definitely relate to Brandon being so inspired by his mom.
00:14:51I want this piece to be a powerful piece.
00:14:53All the things that inspired me to make it, I want you to feel that when it walks in the room.
00:15:02My Serena moment that this reminded me of was when she was in Beyonce's video.
00:15:07Oh my God.
00:15:09Like I love a leotard.
00:15:10Yeah.
00:15:11In our photo, there's a strip right across Serena's back and then there's a cutout right below it.
00:15:16That's where I'm going to take the inspiration to drive this look forward and make it a little bit more elevated.
00:15:21So I take that concept of the strip and I decide I'm going to put it all over the bodysuit to kind of make this really cool lines that kind of mimic a print of sorts.
00:15:30All right, you guys can pack it up and you're going to go to your new place.
00:15:33Yes!
00:15:35Finally!
00:15:37We know where we're sleeping.
00:15:39Hey!
00:15:48Hey, there's rooms.
00:15:50Oh my God.
00:15:53Isn't that pretty awesome?
00:15:54Crazy.
00:15:55I know. It's crazy.
00:15:58I can't believe that I'm living here.
00:16:00Like, this penthouse is nice as hell.
00:16:02I call this one.
00:16:04I call this one!
00:16:05Yeah!
00:16:06Yeah!
00:16:08Honestly, I can't even remember the last time
00:16:11I slept in a twin-sized bed.
00:16:12All right, this is my bed, y'all.
00:16:14I think the last time was whenever I was over in Europe,
00:16:16and they pushed two twins together to make a king.
00:16:19I prefer all women.
00:16:20Yeah.
00:16:21Because I'm a Muslim, and I can't.
00:16:24Oh, yeah.
00:16:25Like, are you a straight dude?
00:16:27No, I'm not a straight.
00:16:27OK, you're fine.
00:16:29So it's all good.
00:16:30OK, there you go.
00:16:31There you go.
00:16:33Can I just get in the tub?
00:16:36This is like heaven to me.
00:16:38Three months ago, I was prepared to move to Chicago
00:16:41with my longtime boyfriend of nine years.
00:16:43And two days before we were making that move,
00:16:46he told me that he didn't want to live with me anymore.
00:16:49So I loaded up my car.
00:16:51And now I'm couch surfing until I find somewhere permanent.
00:16:55Hopefully, Project Runway can help me out there.
00:16:58Cheers to being on Project Runway.
00:16:59Project Runway.
00:17:03Coming up on Project Runway.
00:17:05Yes.
00:17:05Oh, my god.
00:17:06Dude, I know.
00:17:07I can't even find what I want.
00:17:08I end up making the all-time Project Runway major mistake.
00:17:12I know better than this.
00:17:26Good morning, designers.
00:17:27Good morning.
00:17:29Welcome to Mood.
00:17:30Yee!
00:17:31It's fabulous, right?
00:17:32So great.
00:17:32Oh.
00:17:33Yeah.
00:17:34It's very fabulous.
00:17:35I've never been doing Mood Fabric.
00:17:37I'm shaking.
00:17:38My body's shaking.
00:17:40This is really a chance for you guys to find something that's
00:17:41unique and different to set apart from all the other designers
00:17:45that have the same inspiration.
00:17:46You guys are going to have $250 to shop.
00:17:49Okay, go.
00:17:50Woo!
00:17:51Woo!
00:17:5245 minutes.
00:17:53I have no idea where to go.
00:17:54I don't know Mood.
00:17:55Woo!
00:17:56Woo!
00:17:57Woo!
00:17:58Woo!
00:17:59Woo!
00:18:00Woo!
00:18:01Woo!
00:18:01Yes.
00:18:02Oh my God.
00:18:02Oh my God.
00:18:03I became an Eco Luxury designer because I
00:18:05didn't grow up with very much.
00:18:07Recycle Polly.
00:18:08Ooh, recycle.
00:18:09This is all me.
00:18:10Okay, cool.
00:18:11I'm going to try to be my most sustainable, ethical,
00:18:14environmentally conscious self within the competition.
00:18:21Think about Neena.
00:18:22That's the part when I'm breathing,
00:18:24when I think of Neena.
00:18:25It's like, oh.
00:18:28Decisions, oh my God.
00:18:29I suck at making decisions.
00:18:30Dude, I know, I can't even find what I want either.
00:18:33$250 is not enough money to shop retail for good fabrics.
00:18:40I've never had money like this or like a budget like this
00:18:43to just be like, oh, $250 worth of fabric on one outfit.
00:18:46Welcome to the world of Project Runway.
00:18:49Where's Cade?
00:18:51I want to make a dress and a beautiful jacket to go with it.
00:18:55I get four yards.
00:18:57I pick a cheap wool crepe for my dress,
00:18:59but I think my tweed jacket,
00:19:01it will help the final garment.
00:19:03And then there's this.
00:19:0526 minutes, guys.
00:19:09Hey, look at that.
00:19:10Oh!
00:19:11I'm sort of okay with this.
00:19:12No, it's too tacky.
00:19:14Just not loving any of these.
00:19:17What are you trying to find?
00:19:18Well, I'm doing a jumpsuit
00:19:20and I wanted a stiff upholstery blue on blue.
00:19:23Like I know, unfortunately I had too close of an idea.
00:19:27I mean, there is so much here.
00:19:28I know.
00:19:29I do tend to fixate a little bit, but I just need to adapt.
00:19:34We have five minutes.
00:19:35There's five minutes left.
00:19:36I don't even have time for this anymore.
00:19:39I like this one.
00:19:41It's great.
00:19:45Oh, I like this one too.
00:19:46Okay.
00:19:47I see this super heavy plastic organza.
00:19:49This weird new fabric I've never used.
00:19:51Oh, finally.
00:19:52I just cross my fingers and hope it'll all work itself out
00:19:55once I get my mannequin.
00:20:08Here she is.
00:20:09My little baby.
00:20:10You want me to move it for you?
00:20:11I got her.
00:20:12I got her.
00:20:13I got it.
00:20:14So chivalrous.
00:20:15Chivalry is not dead.
00:20:17It's within Bhishmi.
00:20:18It's within Bhishmi.
00:20:19In the photo, like, it's obvious that the pant is a huge part of it.
00:20:26It's sportswear.
00:20:27It's leisure.
00:20:28Right.
00:20:29And pants, because...
00:20:30Because pants.
00:20:31Women wear the pants.
00:20:32Because...
00:20:33Mm-hmm.
00:20:45What are you up to?
00:20:46I am draping an asymmetrical piece inspired by Karlie Kloss.
00:20:53I have a really clear idea of this red sculptural top that I want to do, and it's just going
00:20:58to be really beautiful and impactful on the runway.
00:21:01I want to, like, be, like, respectful of the female form, but, like, also show it off
00:21:05in, like, all the best places.
00:21:06It'll look nice on her.
00:21:08Yeah.
00:21:09I kind of want to have a soft piece because it looks cleaner that way.
00:21:13Mm-hmm.
00:21:14But I kind of don't want to do that.
00:21:16Because you can get the right waist...
00:21:17Yeah.
00:21:18...position.
00:21:19Exactly.
00:21:20Because that matters, especially if you have a plus-size model.
00:21:22It matters.
00:21:23I'm making a bodysuit because I love making bodysuits for plus-size women.
00:21:27Most of the time, plus-size girls don't get to wear the sexy things that a lot of the straight-size
00:21:32models get to do.
00:21:33I want to break all the rules of traditional fashion.
00:21:39I don't need mine to be that hot right now, this material.
00:21:42I'm a little worried I might melt.
00:21:45Please don't let me burn through this material.
00:21:48I end up making probably one of, like, the all-time Project Runway major mistakes for your first challenge,
00:21:53which is buying material that I've never used before.
00:21:57How could I have made this stupid mistake?
00:21:59I know better than this, but here I am doing this.
00:22:02Yes.
00:22:05Coming up on Project Runway...
00:22:07I put a seam down the center front of my bathing suit.
00:22:10You don't want the toes of the camel.
00:22:12I need to leave this for tomorrow and just move on to something else.
00:22:28How are you doing?
00:22:29I could be better.
00:22:30I had a freak out earlier and I let it dictate the way I planned the rest of my day.
00:22:36Yeah.
00:22:37And I'm just having a hard time bouncing back from that.
00:22:39It's going to happen. Don't worry, darling.
00:22:41I mean, that's what I tell myself, but I'm not sure if that's really how it goes.
00:22:45I basically waste this whole day trying to figure out how to manipulate this fabric that I have not used before.
00:22:53Whatever.
00:22:54I need to leave this coat behind and move forward with a dress that will actually get me something
00:22:59because I have to have something on the model and it has to be good.
00:23:04You're very talented, darling.
00:23:05Are you sure?
00:23:06I know you can do it.
00:23:07I'm not sure.
00:23:08I believe in you.
00:23:09I'm going to do this. It's going to be fine.
00:23:10I'm not going to let my freak out take control of my brain right now.
00:23:12Yes.
00:23:15Pinching a quarter.
00:23:17Okay.
00:23:19Oh, I guess I should, like, measure this.
00:23:22I just want to make sure her booty is not, like, hungry.
00:23:28Did you say hungry?
00:23:29Yeah, we don't have time for hungry booties on the runway.
00:23:35You're so right.
00:23:36We don't want no pants eating no booty.
00:23:45What are you making?
00:23:46A goddess gown.
00:23:47A goddess gown?
00:23:48Yeah.
00:23:49Ooh.
00:23:50A goddess making a goddess gown.
00:23:51Ooh, a goddess making a goddess gown.
00:23:53I'm extremely inspired by the story that Elaine had told me about her career.
00:24:00So, I'm gravitating towards something emerging.
00:24:04So, I'm thinking about a Grecian-inspired gown which has different shades of blue.
00:24:11Almost like a goddess rising.
00:24:15What are you making?
00:24:16Pants.
00:24:17Pants can never go wrong with pants.
00:24:21Pants.
00:24:22Pants.
00:24:23Pants.
00:24:24What?
00:24:25I don't know.
00:24:26I've worked with a fuller figure before, but she looks like she's broader.
00:24:31Right.
00:24:32Right.
00:24:33Right.
00:24:34My model is a curvy girl.
00:24:35If I put her in something oversized that's not tailored, that doesn't show off her figure,
00:24:40the judges are totally going to rip me apart for it.
00:24:42It really depends on how the fitting goes and how much work I have to do on the dress.
00:24:45But if I have time, I am making a matching coat to go with it.
00:24:49To win Project Runway, I think you have to have determination.
00:24:53And I think that's something that was given to me from my dad.
00:24:59He was a very determined, like, business set kind of man.
00:25:03He was not a fashionable person at all, but I remember one of the things he was most excited about.
00:25:09I was featured in Elle Magazine last year.
00:25:11They wrote an article about me.
00:25:13And he was like, I picked up a fashion magazine and, like, you're in it.
00:25:16Like, this is so cool.
00:25:18It was the last thing we ever talked about.
00:25:27God.
00:25:32The next day, he passed unexpectedly.
00:25:39And I'm just thankful I had him as a father.
00:25:54What I've done so far looks too basic.
00:25:56But there's something about Brandon's picture that makes me happy.
00:26:00So I decide I want to add feathers somewhere to incorporate the balloons in the photo.
00:26:05If I could just get the feathers to tolerate.
00:26:07I think that would be a great touch to make it a little bit more festive, a little bit more fun.
00:26:14I'm a dumbass, okay?
00:26:15I put a seam down the center front of my bathing suit bottom.
00:26:18I also need a seam rip and recut.
00:26:21Okay.
00:26:22You don't want the toes of the camel.
00:26:24That's not helping.
00:26:26Make it hot.
00:26:27I feel like Frankie's having a hard time keeping up.
00:26:32I think she's a wonderful person.
00:26:34But we're a batch of very skilled designers.
00:26:37And we're definitely at different levels.
00:26:39Stay calm, Frankie.
00:26:40Stay calm.
00:26:41Five minutes left, everybody.
00:26:42Oh, my God.
00:26:43No, I need more time.
00:26:45Such is Project Runway.
00:26:47Yeah, I'm not actually ready to go.
00:26:50All right, y'all.
00:26:52Let's get the hell out of here.
00:26:54I'm tired.
00:27:05I gotta be working on overload today.
00:27:07Hi, designers.
00:27:19Can everyone come over here, gather, and Carly and I have something exciting to share with you.
00:27:27Designers today must be business savvy.
00:27:30Marketing, branding, and e-commerce are essential to becoming a successful designer.
00:27:35Which brings us to a new part of Project Runway.
00:27:40This challenge is a flash sale challenge.
00:27:44In select challenges throughout this competition,
00:27:46America is going to vote on the look that you make.
00:27:51The winning look that the judges pick and the fan favorite look will be manufactured on demand by 19th Amendment and sold on BravoTV.com.
00:28:00You guys will be taking photos of your completed looks and posting them to Bravo's Instagram story.
00:28:09Wow.
00:28:10Stories are big.
00:28:11Social media plays such a big role in how we all operate as designers, so make sure your photo counts. Make it fabulous.
00:28:18This is a competition now. You better take your hand on me.
00:28:21We'll see you tomorrow on the run.
00:28:23Yay.
00:28:24Thank you guys.
00:28:26All right, get the word lost.
00:28:27Yeah, get back to it.
00:28:29I'm excited.
00:28:30I'm like, oh, that's amazing.
00:28:32But now I'm even more stressed.
00:28:34My blood pressure's up now because I didn't need the twist.
00:28:37Coming up.
00:28:40Okay.
00:28:41Looking a little.
00:28:42Black booty.
00:28:43Models are here.
00:28:44Are you Kate?
00:28:45Okay, okay.
00:28:46I hope this fits you.
00:28:47Oh my gosh.
00:28:57Zero waste, guys.
00:29:01Are we feeling good?
00:29:03Yeah.
00:29:04Yes.
00:29:05Coven.
00:29:06Oh my God.
00:29:07Mr. Siriano comes in to see our garments for the first time, and his advice is very, very crucial,
00:29:15and I really, really look forward to whatever he has to say.
00:29:19I wanted to do something almost goddess-like.
00:29:22I want to have a jacket, like a structured jacket on top of it.
00:29:25I don't know.
00:29:26You need so many elements.
00:29:28Right now it looks cool and modern, and I think you should try to keep it that way.
00:29:32You know, maybe you don't need the coat.
00:29:34Yes.
00:29:35All right, good luck.
00:29:37I'm excited to see it.
00:29:38Oh my God.
00:29:39Christian's so cool.
00:29:41Oh my God.
00:29:44Hey, Christian.
00:29:45What's going on?
00:29:46It's going good.
00:29:47Who's your judge?
00:29:49Brandon Maxwell.
00:29:50Oh, Brandon.
00:29:51Yeah.
00:29:52And what's this going to be here?
00:29:53So this is going to be a jacket.
00:29:54Mm-hmm.
00:29:55It's going to have silver buttons going across three ways, and then I was going to have some
00:29:58kind of structural type sleeve.
00:30:00Mm-hmm.
00:30:01I was thinking of putting this here on the side just to kind of continue it with feathers.
00:30:07It's one of those things.
00:30:08It's one of those things.
00:30:09You have a white, then you have this kind of tone, and a feather, and black, and a leather.
00:30:12I mean, that might be a lot of patch working.
00:30:14Yeah, yeah.
00:30:15I mean, this is already a look.
00:30:16Yeah, this should be, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30:18You know?
00:30:19So maybe that's the shining moment that it has.
00:30:21Right, so don't do too much on top.
00:30:22I'm going to take his advice by not adding the feathers on the jacket.
00:30:27I want, you know, when you watch that runway show to be like, oh my gosh, well, I'm really
00:30:30proud of, like, what I made.
00:30:31Exactly.
00:30:32I just hope I don't cry, because I'm a crier.
00:30:34You can cry.
00:30:35Let it out.
00:30:36Right, right.
00:30:37No, it's fine.
00:30:38Thank you so much, Krishna.
00:30:39I appreciate it.
00:30:40You're welcome.
00:30:41Thanks.
00:30:42Hi.
00:30:43Hey.
00:30:44What is it going to be, a dress?
00:30:45It's going to be a skirt top.
00:30:46Okay.
00:30:47And then making a coat to go with it.
00:30:48Mm-hmm.
00:30:49That jacket's shape needs to be really special and interesting.
00:30:54Yeah.
00:30:55Otherwise, you're just making a cool black dress?
00:30:57Yeah.
00:30:58I'm excited to see.
00:30:59Yeah, I am too.
00:31:00Okay.
00:31:01You got a lot of work.
00:31:02I do got a lot to do.
00:31:03You got a lot to do.
00:31:06Frankie.
00:31:07Okay.
00:31:09Let me hear it.
00:31:10I had the Serena Williams cover as my inspiration.
00:31:12Yeah.
00:31:13Amazing.
00:31:14I love the cutout in the bathing suit.
00:31:15Yeah.
00:31:16This is looking a little...
00:31:17A lot of booty.
00:31:20Watch out for this a little bit.
00:31:22Yeah.
00:31:23Yeah.
00:31:24I do think the fit will be super important.
00:31:25You don't want to cut her body up too much.
00:31:27No.
00:31:28You know, arms and then around the waist and all those different things.
00:31:30Yeah.
00:31:31That she doesn't feel like she's in this weird constricted thing.
00:31:33Yeah, that she's not bandaged up.
00:31:34Make sure you're still celebrating the body.
00:31:36Yes, yes.
00:31:37That's the most important thing, I think.
00:31:38And I want it to be tasteful.
00:31:39There's no stripper pole if you need to be right away.
00:31:42Exactly.
00:31:43No, for sure, that's important.
00:31:44I need to see my model, like, ASAP.
00:31:46Yeah, yeah.
00:31:47I get his advice completely.
00:31:49But until I see this model, I just, I have no idea what this is going to be.
00:31:54Everyone, models are here.
00:31:57You guys are going to have 30 minutes with them.
00:32:00Use your time well.
00:32:02Good luck.
00:32:03Yes, look at them bust through the door like that.
00:32:07Hi.
00:32:08Hi.
00:32:10How are you?
00:32:11Oh, I'm smiling.
00:32:12Oh, my God.
00:32:13Oh, you're so beautiful.
00:32:15Are you Kate?
00:32:16I am.
00:32:17Yay!
00:32:18Okay, okay.
00:32:19I hope this fits you.
00:32:20Oh, my God.
00:32:21So now I feel good.
00:32:23This is super duper tight on you.
00:32:25But it will, like I said, it will warm up on your body.
00:32:28Okay.
00:32:29Do you feel choked or anything?
00:32:30No, I feel good.
00:32:31Okay.
00:32:32That looks good.
00:32:33We're giving you a spin on a structured suit.
00:32:35We're taking it to the next level.
00:32:37Can I get you to hold this right here?
00:32:45Okay, I sewed something wrong.
00:32:47The tweed jacket does not fit.
00:32:49It is way too small.
00:32:51I don't know what I sew to what, but it is not right.
00:32:56That tweed jacket was going to be the wow factor to my garment.
00:33:00This is my worst nightmare.
00:33:03I have been working so hard to get here.
00:33:06Yeah.
00:33:07Especially for the transgender people, you need to work harder than other people.
00:33:11Oh.
00:33:12I'm so glad I'm here.
00:33:13Oh, my God.
00:33:14Oh, my God.
00:33:15I'm the first transgender model in a particular way.
00:33:19I'm so honored.
00:33:21Thank you, too.
00:33:24Oh, my God.
00:33:25Oh, my God.
00:33:26You're a real goddess.
00:33:28Oh.
00:33:30Oh.
00:33:32That's why I was like, goddess, goddess, goddess.
00:33:34Because there's actually a goddess wearing my garment right now.
00:33:37Oh, my God.
00:33:39Oh, my God.
00:33:40I want to change the interesting result.
00:33:42I want to inspire all the transgender young generation people who have a dream.
00:33:46Yeah, yeah.
00:33:47Me and Mimi come from the stories of oppression.
00:33:52Me and my boyfriend have been together for eight years.
00:33:56We are from the Himalayan highlands of India.
00:33:59And homosexuality was a crime in my country.
00:34:04I want to put, like, another stitch just so that you're, like, nicely secured over here.
00:34:09One day, our neighbors called the cops on us.
00:34:12And we actually had to leave our home the very next day.
00:34:16And that's why I feel like there is so much connection between her and I.
00:34:22Keep knocking the door.
00:34:23Yeah.
00:34:24If they're not open, the door is going to break.
00:34:26Break.
00:34:27Yes, one day.
00:34:30Okay.
00:34:31Uh-oh.
00:34:32Woo!
00:34:33You're a lot taller.
00:34:3460.
00:34:35Okay.
00:34:36We'll work with it.
00:34:37My model is extremely tall.
00:34:39And there's a huge gap in her midsection.
00:34:41I think I need to just make it longer.
00:34:45When I cut the pattern, I allowed for a little extra length.
00:34:49But my model is a lot taller than I expected.
00:34:52I've got so much work to do.
00:34:54Frankie's look, it just doesn't look good.
00:34:57I feel for her because the worst thing would be to go home on the first runway show.
00:35:07You've got this.
00:35:08Bye.
00:35:09Bye.
00:35:10See you tomorrow.
00:35:11Bye.
00:35:12Thank you so much.
00:35:13See you tomorrow.
00:35:14Bye.
00:35:15Thank you so much.
00:35:16See you tomorrow.
00:35:17See you tomorrow.
00:35:18Bye.
00:35:19Bye.
00:35:20Bye.
00:35:21Bye.
00:35:22Bye.
00:35:23Bye.
00:35:24Bye.
00:35:25Bye.
00:35:26Bye.
00:35:27Bye.
00:35:28Bye.
00:35:29Bye.
00:35:30Bye.
00:35:31Bye.
00:35:32Bye.
00:35:33Bye.
00:35:34Bye.
00:35:35Bye.
00:35:36Bye.
00:35:37Bye.
00:35:38Bye.
00:35:39Bye.
00:35:40Bye.
00:35:41Bye.
00:35:42Bye.
00:35:43Bye.
00:35:44Bye.
00:35:45Bye.
00:35:46Bye.
00:35:47I'm trying to be strong, but I can't help but lose it.
00:35:50I can't help but be emotional.
00:35:52I can't help but, like, let it all out.
00:36:00Coming up.
00:36:01I got a hand sewing needle.
00:36:02What, you want me to sew?
00:36:04Look at you. You can be on Project Runway.
00:36:13You good, Frankie?
00:36:17Okay.
00:36:19Okay, baby, what's going on?
00:36:23You look good.
00:36:33My love, what's happening?
00:36:35I have to re-cut everything.
00:36:37There is, like, no time.
00:36:38Maybe a less ambitious short might be helpful.
00:36:43You can use the top, you add a waistband,
00:36:46so you don't send nothing.
00:36:49Do you, be you.
00:36:50Don't forget all your great design elements.
00:36:52Like, I think you can do it.
00:36:53I got to get this done.
00:36:54I didn't fly away out here to go home, so.
00:36:56Mm-hmm, you got it.
00:36:57Thank you, Christian.
00:36:58Mm-hmm.
00:36:59Christian, give me some advice,
00:37:01but there's no way in hell that I'm going to get
00:37:03this entire look redone in two hours.
00:37:06You can make it work.
00:37:07Oh, yeah, I ain't got no damn choice.
00:37:09So we don't do this.
00:37:11You better don't.
00:37:12Right.
00:37:12Here you go.
00:37:17I only needed, like, 15 minutes with my model.
00:37:20I'm not even going to lie.
00:37:21I put the tweet on first and then try to fit her in that,
00:37:24but I, like, I really don't know what happened.
00:37:27Positive thoughts only.
00:37:35Everyone, time is up.
00:37:37Done.
00:37:38Tomorrow's going to be crazy.
00:37:39It's going to be a lot happening, so just rest up.
00:37:41Thanks for your help.
00:37:43Thank you, Christian.
00:37:44Thanks, Christian.
00:37:46Oh, thank you.
00:37:57You're really excited for the judgment today.
00:38:03A little afraid.
00:38:05I'm so worried.
00:38:06Ugh.
00:38:08But I'm trying to pretend like I'm not worried.
00:38:10Yeah, can y'all give out Xanax?
00:38:12I mean, we're not prescribed it.
00:38:14I am just stressed out about my garment.
00:38:18I have not made my tweed jacket.
00:38:20I know it's not my best work, and I do not feel good.
00:38:24I'm trying to, like, act like everything's going to be great,
00:38:27when I'm like, oh, everything's going to come crumbling down.
00:38:29All right.
00:38:30All right.
00:38:31All right.
00:38:32All right.
00:38:33All right.
00:38:34Let's go.
00:38:35All right.
00:38:36All right.
00:38:37All right.
00:38:38All right.
00:38:39Let's go.
00:38:40This is the morning of the first runway show.
00:38:43I have butterflies in my tummy, and I'm feeling really, really excited.
00:38:46Good morning, everyone.
00:38:48When is the time to go?
00:38:50Guess what?
00:38:51I'm sending in your models.
00:38:53Guys, I'm so excited I could pee.
00:38:59Hi, beautiful.
00:39:00Okay.
00:39:01All right.
00:39:02Let's go.
00:39:03Okay.
00:39:04I forgot to ask you, did you wear a bra that won't show the best?
00:39:06I have pasties.
00:39:07Perfect.
00:39:08Yeah.
00:39:09Okay.
00:39:10I had a meltdown yesterday, so I had to start completely over.
00:39:15I'm trying to focus on just executing something.
00:39:18I have to fit it back on my model to make sure that the changes I made are sufficient.
00:39:23I'm praying that it fits.
00:39:25All right, let's be careful, because I don't want to rip the zipper.
00:39:29It's not the look I planned, but it's not far off.
00:39:34Really beautiful.
00:39:35Wow.
00:39:36Turn.
00:39:37It looks like a piece of sculpture and art, and I love it.
00:39:40Okay.
00:39:41Okay.
00:39:42Who knows how to put in an invisible zipper on this machine?
00:39:45Who knows how to use invisible zipper foot?
00:39:47What's up?
00:39:48How can I have?
00:39:49You know how to use invisible zipper foot?
00:39:50Yeah.
00:39:51Okay.
00:39:52Can I go grab my zipper and you show me how?
00:39:53Yeah.
00:39:54Are you willing to do something?
00:39:58Of course.
00:39:59I got a hand sewing needle.
00:40:01Wait, you want me to sew?
00:40:02Yeah.
00:40:03Okay.
00:40:04Are you having her sew?
00:40:05Yeah.
00:40:06Hand sew a little section.
00:40:07So from?
00:40:08Right here.
00:40:09I have no idea what's going on with Kavanaugh.
00:40:13Why are you asking your model to sew?
00:40:14Like, you should ask one of your fellow designers if they could help you.
00:40:18Just like that?
00:40:19Yep.
00:40:20Just like that.
00:40:21Okay.
00:40:22Thank you, baby.
00:40:23I got you.
00:40:24You didn't know you were going to sew this morning, didn't you?
00:40:25I sure didn't.
00:40:26When you're with me, there's no telling.
00:40:28I'm helping Frankie because Kavanaugh and Frankie are two completely different people.
00:40:32What am I trying to say?
00:40:33I don't want to sound like a douchebag on TV.
00:40:36Frankie is very warm to everybody.
00:40:38And Kavanaugh, she does her own thing.
00:40:40Look at you.
00:40:41You can be on Project Runway.
00:40:42Yeah.
00:40:43I'm going to leave the back of the panel a little bit longer so the trail is small.
00:40:55Yep.
00:40:56We're good.
00:40:57Guys, everyone can hear me, right?
00:40:58Don't forget, if you are still sewing, you still have to do a full look.
00:41:01You have to take your models to the Tresme Hair Salon and the Maybelline Makeup Studio.
00:41:08New glossy lips because you have beautiful lips.
00:41:10I would say definitely mascara.
00:41:16What I'm thinking is very, very simple.
00:41:18Bringing her hair back sleek and up into a high pony.
00:41:21Did you want to add a curl or you want to leave her texture?
00:41:24I just want it to be a little pumped up, you know.
00:41:27Right.
00:41:28Yes.
00:41:29I think that if we use the dry shampoo, it'll bring some life into her hair and give her some volume.
00:41:42Designers, you're going to take your photos.
00:41:45Social media is so influential, it can mean everything.
00:41:49You're in my life.
00:41:50You're in my life.
00:41:51I'm a dick photographer.
00:41:52Yes, you look like a mermaid.
00:41:55Keep that pose, keep that pose.
00:41:56Girl, you are rocking it.
00:41:58This picture is important, but I would never take a picture with my iPhone to put on my social media channel.
00:42:06All of the images that we use are professionally shot, because to me that matters.
00:42:11You are amazing.
00:42:13Okay, I want you to stand right here.
00:42:17I run five different business accounts on Instagram.
00:42:21I take phone pictures all the time of models and clothing.
00:42:25Walk towards the bridge, like power walk a big long stride.
00:42:28Photoshoot, check.
00:42:29Okay, I think we got some good ones.
00:42:31Hi, everyone.
00:42:32All right, time is up.
00:42:34We are going to head to your first runway.
00:42:37How fabulous.
00:42:38I'm so excited.
00:42:40It's going to be amazing.
00:42:41This is it though, for real.
00:42:43Okay, let's go.
00:42:44Okay, let's go.
00:42:45Holy shit.
00:42:46Done, done, done.
00:42:47Last minute touches.
00:42:49Any little fixes.
00:42:51My needle's left in there.
00:42:55What do you need?
00:42:56What else do you need?
00:42:58You need some extra hands?
00:43:00Maybe, she does.
00:43:01Where?
00:43:02Anywhere there's a safety pin, we need black thread.
00:43:05I see like six people have to go and finish Frankie's garment for her.
00:43:10In long term and in business, the only person that can help you is yourself.
00:43:14So I feel like sometimes you need to get it done on your own.
00:43:17I need black thread.
00:43:18I need black thread.
00:43:19I am so nervous that this is going to be way too basic.
00:43:22Needle down, step away.
00:43:24It's as good as it's ever going to get.
00:43:26We're ready for the show.
00:43:28Coming up, you get one shot to make a big impression.
00:43:32About how much did you spend?
00:43:34I thought, well, she definitely had enough left over from this to buy herself a drink.
00:43:44Oh, all bouncing.
00:43:49Hi, designers.
00:43:50Hi.
00:43:51Welcome to the runway.
00:43:53The fashion world is always evolving, but some things remain the same.
00:43:58One day you're in, and the next day you're out.
00:44:02Let's say hello again to your judges.
00:44:05Fashion designer, Brandon Maxwell.
00:44:07Hi, guys.
00:44:08Hi, Brandon.
00:44:09Editor-in-Chief of Elle Magazine and best-selling author, Nina Garcia.
00:44:14Welcome.
00:44:15Award-winning journalist and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Elaine Welteroth.
00:44:20Hi, Elaine.
00:44:22We're going to be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.
00:44:25Let's start the show.
00:44:27All I keep thinking of is, come on, Brandon.
00:44:39Crack a smile.
00:44:40Give me a hint of what you're thinking.
00:44:42But no.
00:44:43He's a complete poker face.
00:44:45My look coming down the runway, you know, it put a smile on my face because she's sexy,
00:44:55but she's still classy, just like in Brandon's photo.
00:44:59Yours has a modern twist, too, and it's really nice.
00:45:02I don't think so.
00:45:05I am not feeling too hot about my look.
00:45:11I am extremely worried that the judges are going to look at the outfit as being basic.
00:45:18But my model at least looks hot as hell.
00:45:24I feel really confident about my piece.
00:45:27It says everything that I'm envisioning.
00:45:30It's empowering.
00:45:31It's courage.
00:45:33It's feminine.
00:45:36Oh, a double.
00:45:39Triple.
00:45:40I'm hoping that Brandon thinks I paid homage to his mom by creating this.
00:45:52Here we go.
00:45:53I am just so excited to see my look go down the runway.
00:45:57It's very glamorous, comfortable, yet very chic, but also looks like modern-day Carly.
00:46:04I really felt proud of myself.
00:46:10I was really inspired by the light hitting her leg in the photo.
00:46:16So I hope they will get my inspiration.
00:46:19Ooh.
00:46:21That's a full picture.
00:46:23I personally think that I did justice to Carly's inspiration.
00:46:31I took elements from the garment she was wearing and transformed this little girl into a confident, sexy woman.
00:46:40I'm so happy seeing my look go down the runway.
00:46:46The sequence shine really well.
00:46:49She looks as confident as Carly did in that image.
00:46:53It's so cool.
00:46:55All right, Nina.
00:46:56Let's see what they got.
00:47:06I'm feeling really good.
00:47:07Sarah is kicking ass, making that butterfly top move.
00:47:12I feel like this is a winning look.
00:47:14You should be proud.
00:47:18My look is very minimal compared to other designers.
00:47:21But I think my styling and my choice of fabrics are elevated.
00:47:28And I can't necessarily say that about every look that came down the runway.
00:47:32Beautiful.
00:47:33It looks very put together, very classic, very clean.
00:47:42And hopefully Nina can see her photo in my work.
00:47:52I'm really happy and proud of myself.
00:47:54But if I make Nina proud, it's like the cherry of the cake.
00:48:03Now I'm excited to see this.
00:48:09Elaine, heads up.
00:48:11Oh, my goodness.
00:48:12I'm about to die.
00:48:15My gown, it looks amazing on her.
00:48:16She looks beautiful in it.
00:48:18And it's sewn perfectly, matching her body.
00:48:22And I couldn't be more proud.
00:48:25I got carried away with the length of the train.
00:48:27I must admit, that was a lot of train.
00:48:30I just hope that the judges see my vision and are happy with it.
00:48:42I feel sick.
00:48:44I'm like, OMG.
00:48:46Don't worry.
00:48:48You're going home.
00:48:49I need to go in the chair.
00:48:50I'm still worried because at least she took us.
00:48:52All I can do is pray that the judges see my creativity, see my design,
00:48:57and forgive me a little bit for some of the construction issues that I had.
00:49:05My completed look is a deep blue cocktail dress.
00:49:09And all of the look, I think, is pretty cohesive.
00:49:12But I have a really hard time reading the judges' response.
00:49:15I have no idea if they like or don't like what I'm doing.
00:49:27Yeah!
00:49:33I'm very, very proud of Mimi and myself.
00:49:36Everything that came together is exactly how I wanted it to be.
00:49:40Mimi and my goddess Trey.
00:49:42And when she walks on the runway, she's magnetic.
00:49:46She's beautiful.
00:49:47She's walking with that amazing flair.
00:49:50And she's owning the garment.
00:49:52I'm like, yes, Mimi, work!
00:49:54Yay!
00:50:03Designers, that was an amazing first show.
00:50:07Congratulations to all of you.
00:50:11But one of you will be our winner, and one of you will be out.
00:50:15We scored your designs.
00:50:26Lila.
00:50:28Vinny.
00:50:29Frankie.
00:50:31Renee.
00:50:32Kavanaugh.
00:50:34And Tessa.
00:50:36The six of you represent the highest and the lowest scores.
00:50:40If I did not call your name, congratulations.
00:50:43You're in.
00:50:45You're free to leave the runway.
00:50:54All right.
00:50:55Let's get your models out here.
00:51:04This, like, got so intense, like, so quickly.
00:51:07Vinny, who was your judge, and where did you get your inspiration?
00:51:10I had the awesome Brandon Maxwell.
00:51:12What first drew me was the balloons.
00:51:16So I was like, how could I celebrate the women without having it be a clown?
00:51:20So I was like, the best way to do it is to just add some feathers.
00:51:23I'm curious to hear from your perspective where you see a real woman wearing an outfit like this.
00:51:28Let's say just for her girlfriends to an art gallery, and they just want to do dress up.
00:51:34Well, I would definitely wear the jacket.
00:51:36Okay, awesome. Thank you. Thank you, Lane.
00:51:38I had a great reaction when I saw this.
00:51:41There's a lot going on.
00:51:42Yeah.
00:51:43But I'd rather more ideas than less ideas.
00:51:47She had a sense of confidence and power when she walked, and you could tell that she felt very good in it.
00:51:52That's the most important thing.
00:51:54Okay, awesome. Thank you.
00:51:55Kavanaugh.
00:51:56My judge was Brandon.
00:51:57What I took from that image was the strong, confident woman, and I developed it to be a modern woman's taste, having the structure, having the detail.
00:52:08My first thought was, if you had a good amount of money for the fabric, and a good amount of time, that it felt slightly basic in terms of the design.
00:52:20Yeah.
00:52:21About how much did you spend? I did have a note when you came down. I thought, well, she definitely had enough left over from this to buy herself a drink.
00:52:29I spent $250.
00:52:30You spent $250?
00:52:31Mm-hmm. I actually bought and made a tweed top to go with the skirt, and totally underestimated the time.
00:52:40But even with this fabric, you could have come up with something else.
00:52:44What's the back look like?
00:52:47Just a normal back.
00:52:51I hate that the first look that you're seeing while I'm here is something that is pretty basic.
00:52:57It says a lot to me that none of the feedback is coming to you as a surprise.
00:53:00This is something that y'all did not have to tell me. I just, I let the time get to me, and with the stuff that I have produced, I can do a thousand times better.
00:53:11Renee.
00:53:12I have Brandon, and he talked a lot about empowerment, and how much courage his mother had.
00:53:19So I wanted to play a balancing act with that. This is a woman who loves to express herself. As soon as she walks in the room, she's not screaming, but she's being noticed.
00:53:30There was a quiet strength to this look when it came out. That, to me, represents my mom.
00:53:39This look is a reflection of your skills to be able to create beautiful details. Job well done.
00:53:46I can't wait to see what else is in store for you. Thank you.
00:53:49Leela.
00:53:50My judge was the lovely and inspiring Karlie Kloss. The image was a gray knit dress, and a lot of designers in my group were designing in all silver, all muted tones. So I used this red silk washed taffeta.
00:54:08She's sporty. It's Karlie's essence. Thank you. However, I would question your skill set as a designer, because there's not a lot there.
00:54:21I liked the simplicity, but it felt like it wasn't perfectly completed. And when it's really simple, it comes down to the execution of those small details.
00:54:31All right, Tessa. So, Nina's photo was of these women on a boat. So I chose a grosgrain for the back straps, which I felt like emulated water. And then I chose shell buttons, kind of nod back to that.
00:54:48This look does not look like a $250 look. This looks expensive. This looks lots. The cut of that pant is so expensive.
00:55:00That pant is superb. The fact that that tunic has a pocket makes me crazy. It's all, like, details that I love.
00:55:09I just keep writing chic fisherman. I could just see her on the boat, opening up the bag, sticking it right in the water, and pulling it up with a lobster or a fish in it.
00:55:18Oh, my gosh. I love it. And last but not least, Frankie.
00:55:22I do have to explain something, because I can't have y'all thinking I'm this bad at sewing clothes.
00:55:28The distance from my model's shoulder to her crotch was maybe five inches different than what I cut.
00:55:35I had to take apart my whole garment and start over. But, um...
00:55:40Don't cry, baby. Don't do it.
00:55:49To only be able to show you something that I only had two hours to make is heartbreaking.
00:55:57It's helpful to hear some of your challenges behind the scenes, but ultimately you get one shot to make a big impression.
00:56:05And this lacks craftsmanship.
00:56:08What material is that? Is it an elastic? Is it, uh...
00:56:12It has some stretch to it. Yeah, oops.
00:56:15Oh.
00:56:16Oh.
00:56:17Okay.
00:56:18Put that back there.
00:56:19I don't know what this fabric is.
00:56:20Okay.
00:56:21It doesn't look supportive.
00:56:23I always say comfort equals confidence.
00:56:28I am sorry.
00:56:29Oh, no. I'm worried about Frankie.
00:56:32We're gonna take a look at your clothes, so please head to the lounge while we make a decision.
00:56:38Oh, they're gonna deliberate.
00:56:43Oh, no, that was rough.
00:56:48Yeah.
00:56:49That was really rough.
00:56:50I knew it was going to be.
00:56:52All right, judges, let's start with Vinny's model.
00:56:57It's just, there's so much going on.
00:56:59It's a lot.
00:57:00It's a lot.
00:57:01But it's also, he took a risk, and I appreciate that.
00:57:03Yeah.
00:57:04To accomplish all these things, he did it well.
00:57:06I was surprised by Vinny's tailoring.
00:57:08I think it's really well done, and he executed on his idea.
00:57:13Mm.
00:57:14Tess's model, will you stand here for us?
00:57:17It actually is.
00:57:18It just gets better and better the closer I get to it.
00:57:22Clearly, she is a very minimal designer, but so thoughtful.
00:57:27The hair, the makeup is fantastic.
00:57:29It's the right bag.
00:57:31It's the back with the little shell buttons.
00:57:35She doesn't need to scream that she's here.
00:57:37And then you turn around, and you grab a drink, and everyone's looking at your back.
00:57:41Wait, is this the winner?
00:57:42This is an all-in-one.
00:57:43Oh, we don't know yet.
00:57:44We don't know yet.
00:57:45Let's keep going.
00:57:46Okay, okay.
00:57:47All right.
00:57:48Thank you, Paola.
00:57:49I feel really good.
00:57:50On to Renee.
00:57:52Great look, and very versatile.
00:57:55Mm.
00:57:56You can see all the ways that this can work with a real woman's life.
00:58:01The construction on it, there's not a string hanging out anywhere.
00:58:05Beautiful.
00:58:06I mean, the whole thing makes me want to lay on this floor, curl up in a ball, and start crying.
00:58:12Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
00:58:13Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
00:58:15She is the one.
00:58:16My team.
00:58:17If we love Renee's garment, and if we love Tessa's garment, guys, how do we decide?
00:58:22I really, legit don't know.
00:58:25All right, Leela's model.
00:58:29I think this is an unfortunate fabric.
00:58:31I don't understand if she needs to blow her nose on it, if she's trying to wipe her face.
00:58:35I agree.
00:58:36Nina, from outer space, you can see that this was not poetic.
00:58:41The asymmetry is what makes this a look.
00:58:44I was a little underwhelmed by the overall idea of it, but it's not the worst here.
00:58:49Yeah.
00:58:50I just feel really bad that the construction wasn't what I usually do.
00:58:53What do we think about this look?
00:58:55Couldn't pivot, and I have some serious doubts that Kavanagh can really even design.
00:59:01The accessories are like a Hail Mary trying to save this disaster.
00:59:06This is a basic crop top and a basic skirt.
00:59:10Just because it's black doesn't need to be basic.
00:59:12It could be extraordinary.
00:59:14And from the reference that you gave, which was so inspiring, so colorful, there's nothing
00:59:19about this that connects to that theme for me.
00:59:22My fabrication was poor in this, but I can construct.
00:59:26I can pattern.
00:59:27And our final look, Frankie's.
00:59:30Oh, my girl Frankie.
00:59:32Frankie.
00:59:33Here's the thing.
00:59:34At least she had some sort of a design point of view, and there might be growth here.
00:59:38Whereas Kavanagh, it wasn't there.
00:59:41But in a competition that's about your ideas, we should at least award her.
00:59:45I don't know, Brandon.
00:59:47This fabric is not what you use for a bodysuit.
00:59:51Uh-uh.
00:59:52This does not look like someone who specializes in designing for women with curves.
00:59:57Correct.
00:59:58So whatever happens, I'm so thankful that all of you have been so kind.
01:00:05All right, judges.
01:00:07Are we in agreement?
01:00:08We know who's going home?
01:00:09Mm-hmm.
01:00:10Let's get the designers out here.
01:00:13Let's get ready for this work.
01:00:14Rene?
01:00:16Tessa?
01:00:18Rene, Tessa, Benny, you had our three favorite looks, but only one of you can be the winner.
01:00:42Tessa.
01:00:43Yes.
01:00:45Congratulations.
01:00:46You are the winner of this challenge.
01:00:50I think we all, I mean, Carly, Elaine, myself, felt like we could identify with your look.
01:00:59It felt like any of us could be wearing that.
01:01:02Tessa, you win immunity in the next challenge, and your design tonight will be manufactured
01:01:08by 19th Amendment and sold on bravotv.com.
01:01:14Congrats.
01:01:15Congrats.
01:01:15Thanks, guys.
01:01:15Vinny and Rene, you are also in.
01:01:18The three of you can lead the runway.
01:01:20Thank you so much.
01:01:21Good luck, guys.
01:01:23I was not expecting this at all.
01:01:25I feel very honored, but I'm just kind of, like, shocked.
01:01:29Yeah!
01:01:29Winning this first challenge really shows the contestants and the judges that I do have a
01:01:38point of view, and I have good taste, and I am definitely one to watch out for in this competition.
01:01:43Leela, Cavanaugh, and Frankie, none of you rose to the occasion tonight, and for that reason, one of you will be going home.
01:02:05Leela, you are in.
01:02:07You may leave the runway.
01:02:08Thank you very much.
01:02:11Good luck, guys.
01:02:12Good luck.
01:02:18Cavanaugh, your look tonight fell flat.
01:02:22We were really hoping to see more creativity from you.
01:02:26Frankie, your bodysuit tonight was really poorly made, and we have questions about your taste level.
01:02:32Cavanaugh, I'm sorry.
01:02:41You are out.
01:02:44That means, Frankie, you are in.
01:02:57Thank you so much.
01:02:58I'm okay.
01:03:01You need to go.
01:03:05I'm right.
01:03:11I'm safe.
01:03:19I'm safe, right?
01:03:21I don't know.
01:03:22Oh, my God.
01:03:23I told you.
01:03:24I told you.
01:03:25Come, come, come.
01:03:26So, so, so proud of you.
01:03:29Cavanaugh, I'm sorry to see you go.
01:03:34Thank you for being here.
01:03:35I'm sure you're going to have a beautiful future and career.
01:03:38Bye, y'all.
01:03:39I feel a little numb.
01:03:42I feel a little numb.
01:03:42Clearly, I wasn't expecting to be going home on the first challenge.
01:03:48Honey, I'm so happy.
01:03:49Mainly because my garment was flattering and had detail, where other garments that were with
01:03:57me were just thrown together without thought.
01:04:02Hi, guys.
01:04:05I'm so sorry, but Cavanaugh, I'm going to have to send you the work room.
01:04:09We're going to clean up your space, okay?
01:04:10That's okay.
01:04:11That's okay.
01:04:12Bye.
01:04:13Bye.
01:04:14I feel like I learned a lot in such a short period of time.
01:04:17Good luck with everything.
01:04:18But I'm so ready to wash my hair and sleep on a comfortable bed with a real pillow.
01:04:25This season on Project Runway.
01:04:26I have someone special I want you guys to meet.

01:04:49Not me.
01:04:50Game over.
01:04:51It's not so much raver as it is jazzercise.
01:04:54You're wearing this to the club.
01:04:56Skirt.

01:04:58Like, I'm not cute.
01:04:59You said it.

01:05:01Game over.
01:05:02It's not so much raver as it is jazzercise.
01:05:06You're wearing this to the club.
