00:00:10Oh, I'm fixing the top.
00:00:11The fabric choices are cool,
00:00:13but maybe there's one unexpected element.
00:00:15Yeah.
00:00:16Grandma's very chic at the beach,
00:00:17so you have, like, an hour and a half
00:00:18to finish this whole dress.
00:00:19Bye!
00:00:20Oh, my gosh.
00:00:21We always need more time.
00:00:22Chasity, this looked so different
00:00:25than anything that we have seen from...
00:00:27Oh, yeah!
00:00:28Erin, it looked feminine, it looked elevated.
00:00:32The winner is Christina.
00:00:34I love this look, everything about it.
00:00:37Coral, Zayden, Octavio, and Project.
00:00:42None of you were able to execute

00:01:24How did you sleep, Tutu?
00:01:25I dream a lot.
00:01:26You did?
00:01:27Mm-hmm.
00:01:28Good dreams?
00:01:29No.
00:01:30Oh.
00:01:31Octavio, my best friend here, went home.
00:01:33I couldn't stop crying after he left.
00:01:37There is so many memories we really bonded into each other.
00:01:50Honey.
00:01:51Daddy!
00:01:52Oh, Daddy!
00:01:53He is more like a brother to me.
00:01:57We felt so small after being 16.
00:02:01Some of you?
00:02:02I don't know who you are.
00:02:04I feel so small after being 16 altogether.
00:02:09And how do you feel after yesterday
00:02:12that you were in the body?
00:02:13When I was there, I thought I was going to go.
00:02:17Because I saw Octavio, and I think he's such a great designer,
00:02:21and the judges love him,
00:02:23so I thought they were going to choose him over me.
00:02:26I really want to stay.
00:02:29Oh, my God. It's from Christian.
00:02:31Good morning, designers.
00:02:32You're the final eight.
00:02:34You've passed the halfway point, and you've earned a break.
00:02:37There's a bar next to your house.
00:02:39Bottomless mimosas on me.
00:02:41I'll see you there.
00:02:42Christian said bottomless mimosas.
00:02:47I'll see you there.
00:02:52We about to drink!
00:02:56I already don't feel good about this.
00:02:58Christian didn't invite you to a bar to have a drink.
00:03:01Oh, yeah!
00:03:03Oh, yeah!
00:03:04Oh, yeah!
00:03:10Oh, my God!
00:03:11Oh, yeah!
00:03:16Yeah, I don't want to die.
00:03:17I'm just taking one.
00:03:20This is so good!
00:03:22Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah!
00:03:24Does anybody ever there want to pour a little bit more in here?
00:03:26I feel like I can't have a half-empty glass.
00:03:33Hi, designer!
00:03:35Oh, wow!
00:03:37Oh, my God!
00:03:38Hi!
00:03:39I am so excited to see Brandon.
00:03:41I saw that Brandon has these beautiful long lashes that I will never see far away or in camera.
00:03:48Good morning!
00:03:49Good morning!
00:03:50Yes!
00:03:51It's so early.
00:03:52I never see you this early.
00:03:54So, do you want to know why you're really here?
00:03:56Yes!
00:03:57Fashion and cocktails have a long history.
00:03:59Almost a hundred years ago, the cocktail dress was invented when women first dared to drink in public.
00:04:05It became a woman's go-to garment for when she wanted to dress a little less formal and a lot more free to have fun.
00:04:12And now, the cocktail dress is a staple in a modern woman's closet.
00:04:16And an essential, I think, for any fashion business.
00:04:18Mm-hmm.
00:04:19So, your challenge...
00:04:23Make a cocktail dress for the modern woman using anything you can find in this cocktail bar.
00:04:30Oh, my God!
00:04:31Oh, yes!
00:04:32It's the Unconventional Materials Challenge.
00:04:34This challenge is always the best.
00:04:38There's nothing here.
00:04:39Guys, behind me, there's a lot.
00:04:42Yeah.
00:04:43Oh!
00:04:44There's a kitchen back there.
00:04:46Oh, my God.
00:04:47Storage room.
00:04:48Get it?
00:04:49Yeah.
00:04:50Cocktail dress, cocktail bar.
00:04:54I have been waiting for the Unconventional Materials Challenge.
00:04:57It's my favorite challenge.
00:04:58I've made things out of candy before.
00:05:01I used to use mirrors.
00:05:03Just weird stuff.
00:05:04I feel like it's coming full circle in my career.
00:05:07What I love about this challenge is this is very technically exciting to see all the different types of materials that you can work with.
00:05:14Anything you can grab, touch, pull off the walls, take apart, rip apart, it's yours.
00:05:21And if you can sew some of these materials together, it says a lot.
00:05:25Please just watch the hot glue.
00:05:27Please and God, watch the hot glue.
00:05:29All right, designers, this is a two-day challenge.
00:05:32You'll have 20 minutes to grab up all your materials.
00:05:35Remember, there's no trip to moods.
00:05:38All right, guys.
00:05:39Let me pass out your model cards.
00:05:41Ooh, look how cute.
00:05:43Little menus.
00:05:44I'm gonna mix it up.
00:05:47It's the bill.
00:05:48All right, guys.
00:05:49So you have your model cards, and you guys can sketch when you get back to the work room, okay?
00:05:52You guys ready to go?
00:05:53Yeah.
00:05:55Your time starts now.
00:05:58Hey, get out of there.
00:06:13Oh my God, this is amazing.
00:06:16This is great.
00:06:20This is crazy.
00:06:23I'm sitting here thinking to myself,
00:06:26What makes a cocktail dress?
00:06:28I see all these stirs,
00:06:30and so I know I'm going to make fringe
00:06:33because I want to stay true to the 20s
00:06:35and kind of the shapes and styles that were worn then.
00:06:40This pile is mine, don't touch it.
00:06:42At this point, I really just wanna grab everything.
00:06:45At first, I went after those cups,
00:06:47and then I saw the dollies there.
00:06:48The lace kind of, like, grabbed my attention,
00:06:50so I grabbed, like, every single piece of it.
00:06:53What about this glass?
00:06:54I feel like I can have it.
00:06:58I grabbed coffee filters.
00:06:59I don't know what I'm gonna use those for,
00:07:01but there were a lot.
00:07:02This is where your creative mind comes into play.
00:07:05When you get all these materials,
00:07:07then you figure out a shape,
00:07:08then you figure out what you're gonna do,
00:07:10but you need materials in order to do that.
00:07:13This is all mine.
00:07:15I'll slap somebody.
00:07:16What's that?
00:07:18Ooh.
00:07:19I see these straw boxes that maybe they could help
00:07:22to create a texture of plastic fish skin.
00:07:25So I'm just, like, taking everything.
00:07:30I grab cover mats, bar mats,
00:07:33and it's like, okay, I can do something with this.
00:07:36I was thinking of doing top.
00:07:38I'm just grabbing as much as I can,
00:07:40and I'll figure it out later.
00:07:42Just grab the whole box.
00:07:43Yeah.
00:07:44What are you gonna do with a cornhole board?
00:07:48I never heard this name of the game.
00:07:51You gotta have bean bags to play cornhole.
00:07:53What is it?
00:07:54Cornhole, right?
00:07:55Yes, cornhole.
00:07:56Yeah, cornhole.
00:07:57I got bean bags.
00:07:58We're gonna play.
00:08:00It is difficult because I don't get inspired
00:08:04by these materials.
00:08:06But when I see the sugar containers,
00:08:09I have an idea for my dress.
00:08:11Thirty seconds.
00:08:13Thirty seconds?
00:08:14No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:08:16Ah!
00:08:17Help!
00:08:18I'm falling, and I can't get up.
00:08:20I got a bunch of stuff,
00:08:21and the next thing was to get a drink.
00:08:23I mean, it was a stressful situation.
00:08:25There was champagne there.
00:08:26I'm sorry.
00:08:27There's a bottle in my bag, too.
00:08:28Three, two, one.
00:08:33Okay, guys, I think it's time to go home.
00:08:35I think the tiger got let out of all of us today.
00:08:38All right, everybody, let's go back.
00:08:41Back to the work room.
00:08:43Hi.
00:08:44Somebody got the bottles of champagne, right?
00:08:46Yeah.
00:08:47I got one.
00:08:48And I have a glass if you want a sip.
00:08:52Oh, my God.
00:08:53Could you walk any slower, Grandma?
00:08:55Rude.
00:08:57Oh.
00:08:58Oh, my God.
00:08:59My shoulder.
00:09:01Look at all that space.
00:09:02Oh, my God, everybody.
00:09:04We all got our own table.
00:09:05Yeah.
00:09:06Oh, my God.
00:09:07Being able to have one full table to yourself is amazing.
00:09:10But I'm just staring at all this stuff.
00:09:13And I literally don't know what I'm going to do.
00:09:20Is there a garment in this bag?
00:09:23Oh, my God.
00:09:24The umbrellas.
00:09:25I don't know what I'm doing with them, but we'll figure it out.
00:09:27I don't know.
00:09:28We're doing anything.
00:09:29I'm telling you, I have a party store here.
00:09:31Jesus Christ.
00:09:32Look how you have a coffee shop.
00:09:34What is cocktail to me?
00:09:37That is the question.
00:09:40Coming up.
00:09:41I'm playing with the texture, and I'll say which one goes better.
00:09:44It's going to look like a tinfoil dress.
00:09:47You're in your head.
00:09:48No.
00:09:49No.
00:09:50Oh.
00:09:59Designing a cocktail dress out of unconventional materials is a little freaky.
00:10:06You're doing it with all these things that you don't necessarily know how they work yet.
00:10:12Oh.
00:10:13Okay.
00:10:14This glass, it's for just like a nice mosaic that I don't know exactly what it's going to be yet, but I'm sure it's going to be lovely.
00:10:20Did you guys use a two or four on Mimi?
00:10:22I think we used a four.
00:10:23Thank you so much.
00:10:24When someone says cocktail dress, I think of party, I think of festive.
00:10:29The main portion of this piece will be the fringe from the doors, and that's going to be my connector from the top to the bottom.
00:10:35Does anybody know how to load a staple gun?
00:10:38Really?
00:10:39Already sewing.
00:10:40I'm just like trying some textures.
00:10:43My idea is to create a textile of straws.
00:10:47I haven't drawn nothing yet, but once I have the sample of the textile, I'll see what to do.
00:10:56I feel like I got too much stuff.
00:10:58Yeah.
00:10:59Me too.
00:11:00Oh, praise the Lord.
00:11:02I am feeling good because I think unconventional is something that it's a little arts and crafts thing that I do all day.
00:11:09Is anybody coming up with a theme for their cocktail party?
00:11:12Mine has a theme.
00:11:13Yeah?
00:11:14Yeah.
00:11:15What's the theme?
00:11:16It's a UN first ladies brunch.
00:11:17Oh, so serious.
00:11:19And she's going to show up and they're looking like she owned the place.
00:11:22I am using the couch leather as a base and then it's going to be covered with that lace dollies.
00:11:29I think I'm ready to cut my papers.
00:11:32My inspiration went straight to the island again because in the island there's a lot of lace.
00:11:36My grandmother had a ton of them.
00:11:38You go to somebody's house, there's lace on the table.
00:11:40The curtain is where we lace.
00:11:41We just love a lace.
00:11:43Chocolate.
00:11:44What are you doing?
00:11:45Melting plastic.
00:11:46Do you have a spoon?
00:11:47Yeah.
00:11:48I'm making flower petals.
00:11:49Oh.
00:11:50Melt.
00:11:51Melt.
00:11:52Melt.
00:11:53Come on.
00:11:54Bubble up.
00:11:55It got too hard.
00:11:56So I am making a pencil length dress using lots and lots of straws and bottle caps.
00:12:09I have so many straws to cut up.
00:12:13I'm taking the different sizes of straws.
00:12:16When I cut them up, look like small beads.
00:12:19All right, let's make fetch happen.
00:12:21So you sure you don't have a theme for your cocktail party?
00:12:24Not really.
00:12:25I mean, all I know is I want red.
00:12:28Red?
00:12:29Yeah.
00:12:30Ooh.
00:12:31Ooh.
00:12:32Ooh.
00:12:33Oh my God.
00:12:34I inherited my artistic abilities from my father.
00:12:40You could literally take a picture of a family member.
00:12:44He would just outline it just by looking at it.
00:12:47But now that I'm watching my oldest daughter do the exact same thing, that I can't even describe
00:12:54that type of feeling.
00:12:55Like, she has the gift.
00:12:57She can pick up a pencil and just draw.
00:13:01And I thank him for that gift.
00:13:04I'm making fringe.
00:13:13Apparently stiff 1,000 stir fringe.
00:13:16I think I've got about 10 yards here, and that's what I wanted.
00:13:19So we'll see how it turns out.
00:13:20If not, I'm back to square one, but I think this will work.
00:13:23I am making a cocktail dress out of a tablecloth, stirs, straws, and I'm adding a feathery jacket
00:13:33made out of parchment paper.
00:13:35It's probably going to look like a 90s prom dress when I'm done, but I like it.
00:13:38I am doing recycled plastic sequins.
00:13:45And then I'm going to make all of a dress with this sequins.
00:13:50By the time you are done with this, we won't have a lighter left.
00:13:53And then, guys, you are stopping to smoke.
00:13:55Oh, my God.
00:13:56Since it's a cocktail dress, I've been wanting to do this corset with cups.
00:14:09And this material can look very interesting.
00:14:12I have no idea how many straws this dress is going to take.
00:14:16I'm just, like, so nervous that five boxes are not enough.
00:14:21Why are you crying?
00:14:30What's happening?
00:14:31Why are you crying?
00:14:34I know.
00:14:35But right now, I need you to work on this.
00:14:38Because he would want you to do good on this.
00:14:41Okay?
00:14:42Don't let it get into your work.
00:14:43Okay?
00:14:44We got three hours and 56 minutes left in this day.
00:14:52Hello.
00:14:53Hello.
00:14:54Oh, hi.
00:14:55Are we creating fabulousness?
00:14:57Hi.
00:14:58Oh, hi.
00:14:59What's happening?
00:15:06Coral.
00:15:07Yeah?
00:15:08Are you using the black straws?
00:15:10Yes.
00:15:11Are you using black straws, too?
00:15:14Uh-oh.
00:15:15If you don't use them, let me.
00:15:17It's all black straws.
00:15:19All of these boxes.
00:15:20I see Chantal working with straws.
00:15:23And I saw Aaron working with straws.
00:15:26And I was like, oh, my gosh.
00:15:28Everyone is using straws.
00:15:29I don't want to use the straws.
00:15:31Everyone is using straws.
00:15:33Coral.
00:15:36So, I got a lot of straws.
00:15:40And Chantal is doing straws, too.
00:15:42But I have all these boxes.
00:15:44And they're all black.
00:15:45You can figure out what else you have.
00:15:47You didn't get anything to weave or do any knotting or anything.
00:15:54Nothing.
00:15:55I have these.
00:15:56Yeah.
00:15:57Well, trash bags.
00:15:58That could be cool.
00:15:59Could you weave them?
00:16:00Yes.
00:16:01Yes.
00:16:02Oh, yes.
00:16:03Oh, my gosh.
00:16:04I mean, Jesus, you're killing me.
00:16:13That's looking interesting.
00:16:15I don't know.
00:16:17Okay.
00:16:18What are you doing over here?
00:16:20Tell me everything.
00:16:21I'm playing with the texture and to see which one goes better.
00:16:24You're in your head.
00:16:25No.
00:16:26It's going to look like a tinfoil dress.
00:16:28And it's a mini corset dress.
00:16:30That's not what you do.
00:16:31This is interesting.
00:16:34This is very different from what's happening in the room.
00:16:36Mm-hmm.
00:16:37So I think you should lean into this.
00:16:39Mm-hmm.
00:16:40Maybe it's funny words or something graphic.
00:16:43That could be interesting.
00:16:44Maybe it's something from where you're from.
00:16:46The whole point is unconventional.
00:16:48What's unconventional about it?
00:16:49You know what I mean?
00:16:50Yeah.
00:16:51Okay, now go.
00:16:53You're welcome.
00:17:07Hey, mister.
00:17:08Hey, honey.
00:17:09Are you making a skirt?
00:17:11I am.
00:17:12It looks like freaking metal.
00:17:15I am creating a modern-day flapper.
00:17:20Because I want to stay true to the 20s,
00:17:22and because, like, roaring 20s 100 years ago,
00:17:26roaring 20s maybe now after COVID.
00:17:29Please don't put a prohibition on alcohol, though.
00:17:32I may need that.
00:17:33You cut up the straws?
00:17:35It stirs.
00:17:36Oh, the stirs.
00:17:38Okay.
00:17:39I have been in the top four times, never won.
00:17:42Four times, safe.
00:17:44Clearly, I am falling short somewhere.
00:17:47I need to do something to stand out.
00:17:49Silver may have been the wrong way to go,
00:17:50but I kind of love the silver.
00:17:52Ooh, what are those?
00:17:54This is fun.
00:17:55So it's, like, little.
00:17:56Sequence.
00:17:57That's so pretty.
00:17:58I wanted to make the full dress with this sequins.
00:18:03I don't have the base, you know?
00:18:06Why can't this netting be your base?
00:18:08I have this.
00:18:10Yeah.
00:18:11And I have these pieces.
00:18:12And that?
00:18:13You can't just do a picnic clad skirt.
00:18:14I don't know.
00:18:15No, come on.
00:18:16I know.
00:18:17I don't feel it.
00:18:18But I think if you can figure out a way to, like,
00:18:20make this look like a real beaded dress.
00:18:24You have all of this.
00:18:25Like, maybe you could cut pieces from here.
00:18:28You know what?
00:18:29Oh, here we are.
00:18:30I can do the bottom part,
00:18:31and then the bottom can be fully from this sequins,
00:18:34silver sequins.
00:18:35Look at you.
00:18:36You worked it out already.
00:18:37Yeah.
00:18:38Oh, no.
00:18:40Hi, Christian.
00:18:41What's happening?
00:18:43So you're cutting up all these...
00:18:45Tiny straws.
00:18:46Tiny straws.
00:18:47And big straws.
00:18:48Into tinier little beads.
00:18:49Yes.
00:18:50I did want to play with texture,
00:18:51because it's going to be all one color.
00:18:53So the idea is that everything's beaded.
00:18:55Yeah.
00:18:56But then you'll spray paint it at the end
00:18:57to be this one monochromaticum color, right?
00:18:59No, I've already started spray painting.
00:19:01Oh, you're going to spray paint it.
00:19:02Mm-hmm.
00:19:03But you could just do it at the end,
00:19:04once it's all on.
00:19:05You're right.
00:19:06Couldn't you?
00:19:07Right painting?
00:19:08This is why you're Christian.
00:19:09Yeah.
00:19:10True.
00:19:17Oh, my God.
00:19:18I just, like...
00:19:19I'm doing a lot of work.
00:19:20I've never been so many hours
00:19:22sitting down in a chair in that machine.
00:19:24Like, doing and sewing and sewing
00:19:26and sewing and sewing and sewing.
00:19:27Oh, my God.
00:19:29Bones, what are you doing?
00:19:31I like your little Edith Beale look.
00:19:35Where's that scarf from?
00:19:37Home.
00:19:38Oh, yeah, you just had it?
00:19:39Yeah, it's mine.
00:19:40Okay.
00:19:41I want to take this fringe
00:19:42and, like, crisscross it in the front.
00:19:44I'm going to hot glue all the straps to this
00:19:48so that it stays.
00:19:49Okay.
00:19:50And then I'll lay this over top
00:19:52so that it holds it.
00:19:53Okay.
00:19:54I grabbed glass tables.
00:19:57Is there a lot of these?
00:19:58It's a whole lot.
00:19:59Wait, this is gorgeous.
00:20:00Right?
00:20:01I'll tap it just lightly
00:20:02so that it breaks up a little bit more,
00:20:04like, after I glue it down.
00:20:06All right, what's your thoughts?
00:20:07I think you'll figure it out as you go along
00:20:09what is successful.
00:20:10But I think that this broken glass, that,
00:20:15that you took, like, a table and cracked it,
00:20:17is really interesting and innovative.
00:20:19I think you should lean more into something
00:20:21that is, like, so special.
00:20:23It's not too many times that Christian comes by
00:20:25and he's just, like, to me.
00:20:27So without changing too much.
00:20:29Yeah, I'm very thankful for this
00:20:30and I feel like I'm headed in a good direction.
00:20:33I'll get back to work.
00:20:34Okay, get back to...
00:20:35Oh, you got...
00:20:36Yeah, you're breaking glass?
00:20:37Yeah.
00:20:38In the scarf?
00:20:39Yeah.
00:20:40Juxtaposition.
00:20:41I'm really...
00:20:42We're all over the place.
00:20:50Very interesting quiet room we've got going on here.
00:20:57Andre, it's a mess over here.
00:20:59It is.
00:21:00So I am using the couch as my base.
00:21:03What's the shape going to be?
00:21:04All the pieces are outside.
00:21:05If you want to take a little walk, it's nice outside.
00:21:07Okay, let's go.
00:21:08Okay, I'll take this.
00:21:09Okay, great.
00:21:10I'll take this.
00:21:11This reminded me of home
00:21:12because we use a lot of lace
00:21:13and embroidery and details like that.
00:21:15This entire dress is going to be literally...
00:21:18Like, creating a texture.
00:21:19Creating a texture of this.
00:21:21So the skirt's going to have a lot of volume then.
00:21:23The bigger ones are going to be up here
00:21:25and then when I get up there,
00:21:26I'm cutting them lower
00:21:27and I'm going to put it together
00:21:28and I'm going to do these on.
00:21:30Yeah.
00:21:31And then spray print right onto the dress form.
00:21:33I think you have to make sure that this
00:21:35doesn't look really, like, crafty.
00:21:38Yeah.
00:21:39It's going to take a lot of time,
00:21:40but I'm really loving that direction
00:21:42of using the dollies.
00:21:44What a nice, beautiful walk.
00:21:46My dream is to be the Haitian version
00:21:48of Oscar de la Renta for Haiti.
00:21:50Like, Oscar de la Renta was for DR.
00:21:52Yes.
00:21:53They created beautiful work.
00:21:54Clean, elegant, well made,
00:21:56with enough detail there to be wow,
00:21:58but not to overwhelm you.
00:22:00And that's what I love about Oscar de la Renta.
00:22:02Spray painting it after.
00:22:03Spray painting it after, yeah.
00:22:04Okay.
00:22:05Should we play cornhole?
00:22:06Yes.
00:22:07People were playing.
00:22:08America versus Russia.
00:22:09Let's go.
00:22:10Oh, my God.
00:22:12Okay, get it in.
00:22:13If I don't get it in, it's very big.
00:22:16You got one point.
00:22:21Yes!
00:22:23I'm leaving!
00:22:26Goodbye.
00:22:27Goodbye.
00:22:28Bye-bye.
00:22:29Bye-bye.
00:22:30Leave those boots in the back for me.
00:22:33Oh, my God.
00:22:3430 minutes.
00:22:41Doing macrame with him, with the bags.
00:22:43I'm trying to, I'm going to try to do as much as I can on the skirt.
00:22:46Nice.
00:22:47It's going to be crazy, but...
00:22:48It is a little crazy, but it's cool.
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:51Oh, .
00:22:52I got more red straws.
00:22:53Why did I decide to cut up straws into bite-sized Captain Crunch pieces to individually place these straws on the bodice?
00:23:03Why did I do this to myself?
00:23:07Time to stop.
00:23:08No.
00:23:09I didn't hear that.
00:23:10Time to go.
00:23:11Now I just have to do the sleeves and the skirt, and that's it.
00:23:15That's it.
00:23:16I really love what I'm doing, and I have to take the risk.
00:23:19With this look, finally, I will prove the judges that the Christian Siriano safe was...
00:23:26was for me.
00:23:27All right, let's go.
00:23:28Come on, everybody.
00:23:29Let's go.
00:23:31Coming up?
00:23:32Is it working?
00:23:33I think so.
00:23:34That does not fit.
00:23:35You got to work this out.
00:23:36This doesn't even fit yet.
00:23:37You barely got anything done.
00:23:39What are you going to do?
00:23:40I'm a...
00:23:41I'm...
00:23:42Yeah.
00:23:46Girl, that's like Iron Man.
00:23:48Wow.
00:23:51Damn, we're normal.
00:23:54What's this going to be?
00:23:55A mentoring gun.
00:23:57Oh, out of what?
00:23:59Thank you, plastic bags.
00:24:01Thank you, plastic bags.
00:24:02Yeah, thank you.
00:24:03Do I exit after I say thank you?
00:24:05Oh, yeah.
00:24:06Exit.
00:24:09Exit.
00:24:11Christian said,
00:24:13Maybe you can make something where you're coming from.
00:24:17I come from Shanghai.
00:24:18The Western country has the cocktail dress.
00:24:21In China, Shanghai is the place ladies wear this mentoring gown with the typical features.
00:24:27Why are you so skinny?
00:24:29I had a very bad day yesterday.
00:24:32I don't feel inspired, but I feel this is the new day to move on.
00:24:43Yeah, I think this can make a nice patty.
00:24:48A nice patty.
00:24:49Yeah.
00:24:50A patty is a wig, but I call them patties because I'm inspired by Patti LaBelle and her iconic hairstyles.
00:24:57Well, now we can do the project patties because I got enough patties for all of us.
00:25:02Oh, my God.
00:25:03Oh, I burned my finger, Lord.
00:25:07Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:25:10The greatest hits by the Project Patties of season 19, Project Runway.
00:25:15Season 19.
00:25:18Oh, my God.
00:25:20Hi, everybody.
00:25:21Welcome, Christian.
00:25:23I am Christian.
00:25:26Oh, what a serenade.
00:25:28God, make it stop.
00:25:30All right, who wants a model?
00:25:32I want one.
00:25:33You're going to a diplomatic party.
00:25:42So I'm going to have you hold it right there.
00:25:44So probably this is going to be a little bit, you know, like, itchy.
00:25:48For conventional materials?
00:25:50It's a hard one.
00:25:51I'm sure.
00:25:52Okay, what do you have to do?
00:25:54I want to do the sleeves.
00:25:56I mean, it's very gorgeous.
00:25:59Did you make a sleeve at all?
00:26:01I didn't have the time today, so I'm leaving it at the end.
00:26:04I want to have, like, a clean dress.
00:26:06And after, once the dress is done...
00:26:08Then you'll see.
00:26:09Yeah.
00:26:10At least right now I know that I have enough straws,
00:26:13but I don't know if I'm going to have time to make the sleeves.
00:26:17I thought the sleeve was really cool.
00:26:19Yeah, I know.
00:26:20All right.
00:26:21Feel tight?
00:26:22A little bit under the arms.
00:26:24Yes.
00:26:25Is it working?
00:26:26I think so.
00:26:27That does not fit.
00:26:29You got to work this out.
00:26:30This has to fit.
00:26:31This doesn't even fit yet.
00:26:32I can definitely move the dart higher.
00:26:34This gets the texture.
00:26:35You're going to paint it.
00:26:36And this gets the texture.
00:26:37This entire thing.
00:26:38The whole thing.
00:26:39The whole thing.
00:26:40All the way up.
00:26:41A lot of volume.
00:26:42Maybe you don't use so many now.
00:26:44This is going to go up to here.
00:26:46And then it starts to get smaller.
00:26:48Yeah.
00:26:49Smaller as it goes.
00:26:50Smaller, smaller.
00:26:51And I was even thinking maybe do, like, strips.
00:26:54Yeah.
00:26:55I don't want to add more volume in where it's not needed.
00:26:58Okay.
00:26:59I'm leaving you to work it out.
00:27:00Yeah.
00:27:01He does this every time.
00:27:02Um, hello.
00:27:08How are you going to be this entire thing?
00:27:12You've barely got anything done.
00:27:13I'm going to cover it.
00:27:14So much.
00:27:15I'm going to.
00:27:16All this good.
00:27:17I know.
00:27:18I know.
00:27:19I know.
00:27:20He scares the out of me.
00:27:21Okay.
00:27:22Let's try this one.
00:27:23Cute, right?
00:27:24How's it going to be gorgeous and perfect?
00:27:27Um, so this will be the mentoring button.
00:27:30Yeah.
00:27:31And this patchwork.
00:27:35Won't be like this shape.
00:27:36What is that?
00:27:37This is the sign you see yesterday.
00:27:39Oh, that's it?
00:27:40Yeah.
00:27:41No, this will be attached from the bottom.
00:27:44Oh.
00:27:45Like that.
00:27:46The patchwork on the dress.
00:27:47Oh.
00:27:48Yes.
00:27:49I started it over.
00:27:50Can you do any, like, beautiful binding or anything to make it look a little more expensive
00:27:55and a little more real because right now it still just looks like a bag dress.
00:28:00Think about it.
00:28:01Okay.
00:28:02Yes.
00:28:03Cool.
00:28:04Okay.
00:28:05All right, designers.
00:28:06Everybody say goodbye to your models.
00:28:07Bye, honey.
00:28:08See you tomorrow.
00:28:09Tomorrow.
00:28:11Bye, guys.
00:28:12All right, guys.
00:28:14You have a lot of work to do.
00:28:17All of you.
00:28:18Less singing, more gluing and sewing.
00:28:21Got it?
00:28:22All right.
00:28:23Goodbye, Christian.
00:28:24Goodbye.
00:28:25Have a good day.
00:28:26Bye, Christian.
00:28:27The hours left.
00:28:28Ooh.
00:28:29No, no, no.
00:28:30Yes, yes, yes.
00:28:31Look, Christina.
00:28:32I like it white.
00:28:33I like it white, too.
00:28:34And I think I am 99.5% sure that I do not want to add color to it.
00:28:50And if I do, it's gonna be just at the bottom.
00:28:53Oh.
00:28:54I finished the dress, but for me, it's not enough.
00:29:00In my head, I have that dress with some sleeves.
00:29:04So I'm, like, really, really trying to put the dress the way I see it in my head tomorrow.
00:29:12Christina.
00:29:13Light earthy.
00:29:14I know.
00:29:15I'm, like, that's what I'm doing.
00:29:16I know.
00:29:17Light earthy.
00:29:18I know.
00:29:19I'm, like, that's what I'm doing.
00:29:20Plastic, I'm melting, and it's something new and cool.
00:29:23So it's like a crystal, which reminds me of some topic in school.
00:29:27It was written that you can grow crystal from poison.
00:29:32I bought it, and I put it on the window where was my parrot, and I started to grow these crystals.
00:29:38And, unfortunately, then we lost my parrot, but I did grow the crystals.
00:29:46One hour, guys.
00:29:47One hour.
00:29:48One hour.
00:29:55What do you have left to do?
00:29:56I have to put my collar on, put my sleeves on, and then put my snaps.
00:30:01This is really beautiful.
00:30:02Really?
00:30:06I'm tired of straws.
00:30:08I'm tired of spray paint.
00:30:10My hands are silver.
00:30:12I'm turning into the Tin Man.
00:30:14I might have time to make that feather jacket.
00:30:17Two minutes, guys.
00:30:18Two minutes.
00:30:19Okay.
00:30:20Well, it'll get finished tomorrow, then.
00:30:22Two whole minutes.
00:30:24This is really the sewing Olympics.
00:30:26They should just rename it that.
00:30:28All right, guys.
00:30:29That's it for the day.
00:30:31Leave me more time.
00:30:32Let's go.
00:30:33Let's go.
00:30:34Let's wash the hands.
00:30:36Yes.
00:30:37Yes.
00:30:38All the way.
00:30:39To a better place.
00:30:42I want a pickle.
00:30:43Be.
00:30:44Be.
00:30:45So I can't remake that drink.
00:30:46Oh, my God.
00:30:47How are you feeling now?
00:30:49Feeling better?
00:30:50A little better.
00:30:51See how bubbling I was today.
00:30:53Yeah.
00:30:54It was better than yesterday.
00:30:55Yeah.
00:30:56Yesterday.
00:30:57I am very appreciative that I can have the friendship to other designers.
00:31:03The last glue gun just took my whole skin out.
00:31:05Back in China.
00:31:06I grew up as a owning child.
00:31:08That was a policy.
00:31:10We don't have siblings.
00:31:11So that's why I'm so bonded with my friends.
00:31:14I have like five or six closures like one.
00:31:17So I have to finish that.
00:31:19I would love to have kids one day.
00:31:21And I want my kids to have friends and to have siblings.
00:31:25Can you put that in the fridge, please?
00:31:27Some of us have really become close.
00:31:31There's no way you can't.
00:31:32And we're just a little bit more than halfway through.
00:31:35And I have been so very fortunate to have been part of that amazingness.
00:31:41I can't even remember that name.
00:31:42Yeah, I could have.
00:31:43And then...
00:31:44What the is going on?
00:31:45Oh my gosh.
00:31:46You're so close to us.
00:31:47I don't want to see this .
00:31:49We're like, oh my God.
00:31:50Did a war just break out in New York?
00:31:52Oh my God!
00:31:54Oh my God!
00:31:59Oh my God!
00:32:02It is incredible.
00:32:05I get the chance to stand in awe with new friends.
00:32:10Watching one hell of a firework display.
00:32:14That's pretty good.
00:32:17That was so beautiful!
00:32:20Run, wait!
00:32:25Run, wait!
00:32:26Run, wait!
00:32:28Run, wait!
00:32:29Run, wait!
00:32:31Let's see.
00:32:34My game plan when I get into the workroom is hover the bottom half of the room.
00:32:39I'm just going to bottle cap the rest of the top.
00:32:43Because guess who still has to spray paint it?
00:32:46I do.
00:32:49Blue Gun, plug that up first.
00:32:51I know there's one thing I need to finish before Luz gets here.
00:32:54Does it need to be a jacket?
00:32:56Is it just going to be too, too much?
00:32:58And I've got an idea.
00:32:59Why can't it be a cake?
00:33:00When I think of the 20s and I think of like Myrna Loy and a lot of the actresses of the time, a lot of them wore like a capelet.
00:33:08Perfect.
00:33:09I'm going to grab this.
00:33:10Okay.
00:33:11Yeah, I'm not going to use it.
00:33:12Okay.
00:33:14It's the wrong way day and I still have to hot glue all the toothpicks on top of my gown.
00:33:23I'm very happy today.
00:33:25I think that's good.
00:33:26Hello.
00:33:27Hi, Christian.
00:33:28Hi, Christian.
00:33:29Hello.
00:33:30Are we doing great?
00:33:31Yes.
00:33:32Okay.
00:33:33Send in the models.
00:33:34Hey.
00:33:35Oh, cute dress.
00:33:36Hey.
00:33:37Good dress.
00:33:38I'm good, honey.
00:33:39How are you?
00:33:40I need to put this on you and make sure I get the zipper right.
00:33:41I like it clean.
00:33:42The simplicity of it and that you can see the color in the back.
00:33:45I'm going to pull tight.
00:33:46Ready?
00:33:47Yeah.
00:33:48Squeeze in.
00:33:49Mimi looks fantastic in this dress.
00:33:50She's giving me Bond girl.
00:33:51Like it's the modern day Bond girl in a modern day cocktail dress.
00:33:54I think I should use some of this.
00:33:56It is cool.
00:33:57Give me at the back of my dress.
00:33:58Let me, um, put me in the back of my dress.
00:34:00I'm going to put this on you and make sure I get the zipper right.
00:34:01I like it clean.
00:34:02The simplicity of it and that you can see the color in the back.
00:34:03I'm going to pull tight.
00:34:04You ready?
00:34:05Yeah.
00:34:06Squeeze in.
00:34:07Mimi looks fantastic in this dress.
00:34:08It's pretty, right?
00:34:09She's giving me Bond girl.
00:34:10Like it's the modern day Bond girl in a modern day cocktail dress.
00:34:12I think I should use some of this.
00:34:13Let me, um.
00:34:16Okay.
00:34:17Now turn.
00:34:18That feels a lot better.
00:34:19Does that feel better?
00:34:20It looks better too.
00:34:21Cause it's not as scraggly down there.
00:34:22Yeah.
00:34:23Okay.
00:34:24I feel better now.
00:34:25It's not a jacket actually.
00:34:26It's a cape.
00:34:27Yes, ma'am.
00:34:28That's fantastic.
00:34:29I love it.
00:34:30I love it.
00:34:31Love it.
00:34:32Love it.
00:34:33Okay.
00:34:34Now you're too tall for me to try to figure it out.
00:34:36Originally, I wanted a cocktail dress with two big sleeves made out of straws.
00:34:41But now that there's no time, it seems that it's going to be just one sleeve.
00:34:46It's like a wing.
00:34:47When I saw the basic dress, I was like, this is beautiful.
00:34:50But with the sleeve, it's like, boom.
00:34:52Can you smash these?
00:34:54Oh my God.
00:34:55I have my model doing manual labor.
00:34:57It's okay.
00:34:58It's okay.
00:34:59I'm trying to figure out what else I can add to this skirt to fill it up, fill it in,
00:35:05get it done.
00:35:06I grab popcorn, I grab knife heads, and I'm just about to glue where I can to make texture
00:35:11and still have like a cohesive look that makes sense.
00:35:14Why is this moving so slow?
00:35:17That's good.
00:35:18How are you feeling?
00:35:19I'm good.
00:35:20I'm also...
00:35:21Sorry.
00:35:22Yeah, I'm sure.
00:35:23I cannot feel my fingers, but I am actually really happy about this design because it's
00:35:29really fresh design.
00:35:30I did create some new materials from existing materials, and it's a very sexy dress.
00:35:36I'm so excited.
00:35:37Designers, when you're ready, take your models to the Tresme hair salon and the Maybelline
00:35:41makeup studio.
00:35:42Let's go.
00:35:43Hi.
00:35:44I want it all over, wet, finish.
00:35:47All right, well, I'm going to start by using a little bit of Tresme extra-hole gel to,
00:35:52you know, really help create sculpture around your hairline.
00:35:55Yes.
00:35:56Mm-hmm.
00:35:57Dark red hair.
00:35:58Yes!
00:35:59Dark, dark, dark.
00:36:00She came yesterday with all her hair up.
00:36:05Like, kind of like bohemian.
00:36:07Yeah, like bohemian chic.
00:36:08Yes.
00:36:09Perfect.
00:36:10I know exactly what to do.
00:36:11A little bit of Tresme keratin skin serum.
00:36:13Mm-hmm.
00:36:14Okay.
00:36:15Just to, you know, add a little bit of shine to your twist.
00:36:19Oh, my God.
00:36:20I told her.
00:36:21Wait, so tell me.
00:36:22Yeah.
00:36:23I love it.
00:36:24I am going to ombre from bottom up.
00:36:29I just don't want to mess with the rest on top.
00:36:32Yeah.
00:36:33I think it's so clean and fresh and delicate.
00:36:35White.
00:36:36It's a doily dress.
00:36:41Yeah.
00:36:42What you looking at me for?
00:36:43You did it.
00:36:44Well, I like my doily dress.
00:36:46You don't know it's doily.
00:36:47That's the key thing.
00:36:48Yeah.
00:36:49It does not look like an unconventional material.
00:36:50It looks like lace.
00:36:51You're actually an insane person.
00:36:56You've got to paint this dress.
00:36:57You have 30 minutes.
00:36:58Like, for real.
00:36:59I'm in beast mode right now.
00:37:00Like, if you don't paint the dress, it's never going to dry.
00:37:03Okay.
00:37:04Why don't you glue afterwards?
00:37:05Go run around like a chicken and dry it outside.
00:37:10Shut up, bug.
00:37:13Go look on the wall and see what shoe you like and get your size.
00:37:15You're going in a painted dress, honey.
00:37:18Get ready.
00:37:24Seventeen minutes.
00:37:25Ow.
00:37:26I just burnt myself.
00:37:27Okay.
00:37:28Look, there's no glue.
00:37:30So well made.
00:37:31How nice.
00:37:32Gorgeous.
00:37:37All right, designers.
00:37:38We're leaving this room in 10 minutes.
00:37:41Ten minutes to dress up.
00:37:43She's a little short.
00:37:45This lid is too high and I'm not putting her down the runway where they can see any of her goodies.
00:37:50So now I have to take coffee filters, go outside, spray paint them, come back in, glue them, burn the out of my hands.
00:37:58I'm not going to burn you, I promise.
00:37:59And go and do it again and again until I'm okay with where it lays because I can't send her down the runway like this.
00:38:07Um, very good.
00:38:10Okay.
00:38:12Turn for me to the back.
00:38:15Oh, we did it.
00:38:17Six minutes, Anna.
00:38:18Are those snaps going to stay?
00:38:20When she walks, it doesn't burst open?
00:38:22Oh, you mean walking.
00:38:23Oh, okay.
00:38:24Oh yeah, walking.
00:38:25Did you know it's a runway?
00:38:31I'm trying to sell the bag.
00:38:37All right, designers.
00:38:38That's time.
00:38:39Let's go backstage.
00:38:40Last look.
00:38:46My couture beads.
00:38:47They keep falling.
00:38:48I'm trying not to break in front of the other designers, but I'm freaking out because I do not want to go home on a challenge that I feel like fits my fashion story and my purpose.
00:39:02You have literally seconds.
00:39:04I don't know how to do this.
00:39:06Coming up?
00:39:07The fit wasn't flattering on your model.
00:39:09What kind of person just picks straws?
00:39:12Frankly, I guessed too much of a glue gun, did you?
00:39:15We're down to eight, you guys.
00:39:30Yeah.
00:39:31Yeah.
00:39:32It's getting really real, isn't it?
00:39:33Yeah.
00:39:34Yeah.
00:39:35Well, I am very excited to introduce you to our guest judge today.
00:39:39He is the go-to designer for influential women like Lady Gaga, and I know you saw that look on Kamala Harris at the inauguration.
00:39:49Yes.
00:39:50Please meet fashion designer Christopher John Rogers.
00:39:55Yes.
00:39:57Another black man coming up, and he's very young.
00:40:00So, like, kudos to you, Christopher.
00:40:02Hi, designers.
00:40:03I'm super excited to see what you guys have cooked up for us.
00:40:06The theme is cocktail party.
00:40:08So, what do you say we get this party started?
00:40:11Yes.
00:40:12Let's start the show.
00:40:26I'm looking at UN in the runway, and I'm just enjoying this moment.
00:40:30It looks edgy, it looks sexy, it looks powerful.
00:40:41I feel so good and so proud that I'm still in the competition, and I had the chance to prove to the judges how creative I am.
00:40:50For this unconventional challenge, I was trying to put my personality onto the dress and something for fun.
00:41:03When I see my model walking down the runway, I feel there's a lot of fun for my look.
00:41:08It looks great.
00:41:13The dress faces her perfectly.
00:41:16The colors are matching.
00:41:18I'm very happy for the result.
00:41:29Mimi looks so good.
00:41:31The look, the character is all coming together.
00:41:33She's got her bond bag with the diamonds in it.
00:41:42I feel like I've definitely done enough to stay in this competition with this look.
00:41:46As well as possibly win it.
00:41:48It almost looks better than fabric removed.
00:42:01I'm very happy with this, especially the silhouette.
00:42:04I thought it was so cool and so different from anything I have seen so far in the runway.
00:42:09I think my garment can be seen more as actual materials and not like a fabric.
00:42:25They are killing it.
00:42:26I know.
00:42:27I'm just watching her legs move and the coffee filters flound.
00:42:39That's the positive.
00:42:40The look is giving what I wanted it to give.
00:42:47The only downside is popcorn fell off.
00:42:50So all the white and the coffee filters are showing through.
00:42:54I didn't have enough time to execute the look to perfection.
00:42:58So I feel like I really filled my fate.
00:43:01Somebody left the popcorn on the runway.
00:43:03I see big, ruffly, feathery, amazingness.
00:43:18For once, I didn't care if the judges literally took a magnifying glass to this look.
00:43:24It's unconventional materials.
00:43:26It is put together well.
00:43:28Like, I didn't expect it to look that good.
00:43:31I hope they like it.
00:43:34It moves beautifully.
00:43:42You can see through the dress the color that was painted on.
00:43:51I hope the judges saw that I put in work into this.
00:43:54Attempted of recreating something new with this dolly.
00:43:59You use dolly and cake, not creating lace with dolly.
00:44:01This dress is very, like, sexy, but still sophisticated.
00:44:02And I'm really proud of, like, all the work I did.
00:44:04And I think it's important as a designer and artist to work further and to push further the material you already have.
00:44:06I think that's the goal for unconventional challenge.
00:44:08I think that's the goal for unconventional challenge.
00:44:09I think that's the goal for unconventional challenge.
00:44:10I think that's the goal for unconventional challenge.
00:44:11like a sexy but still sophisticated and I'm really proud of like all the work I
00:44:17did and I think it's important as a designer and artist to work further and
00:44:26to push further the material you already have I think that's the goal for
00:44:32unconventional challenge
00:44:41designers I have seen many unconventional material challenges in fact I've seen
00:44:48them all literally but this is one of the best rarely am I speechless and I am
00:44:56I am completely speechless it was incredible congratulations on getting
00:45:03through what is always the most painful challenge thank you one of you will be
00:45:10the winner and one of you will be out
00:45:22hey designers can you please step up to the runway
00:45:29we have scored your designs bones coral you are in you may leave the runway
00:45:40yes the six of you had the highest and lowest scores one of you will be the
00:45:50winner and one of you will be out okay here comes one of our favorite looks this
00:45:56one blew us away
00:46:06Aaron what did you use for your look this is the soft cushy cabinet liner for
00:46:12glasses there are a thousand stirs put on duct tape sewn through and then made a
00:46:16fringe straws tablecloths but what is the coat that is
00:46:21parchment paper on a tablecloth lined with a microfiber towel I feel that like it's
00:46:27so beautiful I thought it was complex in the bust in a way that really made me
00:46:33want to know more was anything silver when you started or you sprayed it off
00:46:38everything was sprayed I love the geometry of this dress it looks like an
00:46:43architectural feet and the effect that you created with the straws is extremely
00:46:50polished thank you for me I actually really didn't need the capelet I found
00:46:54that it kind of took me out of this metallic world that maybe if you would
00:46:57have just led with this like I would have scored it a bit higher but yeah I think
00:47:01it's a really successful dress thank you great execution great idea and I just
00:47:06love to see you in the top feeling confident I feel like I'm starting to come out of my
00:47:10shell and do something that's more about the little bit of extraness that I am it
00:47:14was extra in all the right ways thank you Aaron thank you the next look did feel a
00:47:23little crafty and got one of our lowest scores the anticipation
00:47:27Chastity tell us how you made your look and what you used I used bottle caps
00:47:40that I hammered out flat coffee filters knives popcorn and 14 for me it was the
00:47:49construction of it that I could see coming off and the paint at the bottom
00:47:54not being fully there and then kind of seeing the green of the popcorn that's
00:47:59where it sort of took me out of it but from far away I really understood it it's
00:48:04like a nice graduation of texture throughout but it's just the execution
00:48:09falls short of like what I would hope for you maybe the silhouette needed a
00:48:14little more polish but frankly I guess too much of a glue gun did you and I mean
00:48:20I can't sell the bottle caps so I had to use the glue gun I'm sorry I spent a lot of time on the top and I
00:48:34forgot about I had a whole skirt to finish so you just ran out of time like it
00:48:39happened thank you Chastity the next look had one of the lowest scores
00:48:48Anna when you were in the bar you mentioned when cocktail dress coming
00:48:58from in that period in China we wear the main ring gown for the cocktail dress
00:49:03what are the materials this is the toilet and on top of the gown is a plastic bag
00:49:09and the stickers from the exercise graphic text is always really nice to think about
00:49:16using but you really have to think about it I don't know if it's exit or excite
00:49:20or what exiting has to do with thank you I just kind of felt like all over the
00:49:24place so I really think just being a bit more intentional about why you're
00:49:28choosing the words that you are if you do end up using words out of all the
00:49:32designers you were the only one that created a print and I also lived with
00:49:39ordering a lot of takeout so I'm very familiar with the plastic bags and the
00:49:46thank you what's the meaning behind the exit sign that's falling down her dress
00:49:52okay well I'm saying exit because always I end up the conversation I say oh bye bye
00:49:58so it's like okay thank you exit you know in this dress I really have had fun you know I get
00:50:05out overall the construction of the dress was not the problem to me it was the design and shockingly
00:50:13for you it was the taste level sorry thank you Anna okay here comes one of our favorite looks
00:50:22two straps is like perfection yeah it was beautiful Chantal talk to us about how you achieved the look
00:50:36once that I start doing the straws I see the text still working the machines I knew that there was the
00:50:42material that I wanted to use and there's like a lot of cutouts that way the straws can have movement
00:50:48these are not hot glued on this is you sewed each one of these straws I've been sitting in the
00:50:53machine like 15 hours the whole dress have no glue is the corset bone we didn't have bones but this is
00:51:01like thick enough to hold it I think it's amazing it looks like it could have been beaded by Lesage in
00:51:07France the construction is insane it's stunning thank you so much what kind of person just picks
00:51:13straws that is a person who clearly has no fear every element of this should have gone wrong but it was
00:51:23sensational from top to bottom including the hair the shoes the bag what can I say I love a comeback story
00:51:30I can't believe you almost went home and then you turned around and made this this is what this
00:51:36competition is about this is why we're here to find people like you who can do this I'm really
00:51:46impressed it's tasteful head to toe I mean thank you know what impressed me so much about this look
00:51:54was the confidence in the vision you took an idea and it feels so edited and so precise and that is a
00:52:04mark of a really good designer thank you so much thank you Chantal you and you can leave the runway
00:52:10the next look was one of our least favorites of the night let's get it out here
00:52:34project tell us about your look when I went to the bar and I saw the doilies it reminded me of
00:52:42something that you will find in the island we use a lot of old vintage lace I didn't use the entire
00:52:47thing I just cut the laces out and then really place them there do the flowers at the bottom and
00:52:52then as I come up really stretch them to create the don't tell detail I really wanted to give her a fit
00:52:58and I'm really do love the dress did you ombre the dress once it was already fully constructed once I
00:53:04was done I would step back I realized it was gonna turn into a carnival float so I just decided to
00:53:09ombre the bottom in the pink but it did take a lot of time so I did do this part at the end risky but
00:53:15like I think there was a lightness to it and a happiness to it that I responded to and I think
00:53:21there were some fit issues but I think also you're working with the pleather underneath which besides
00:53:29the doily is I think the issue I personally kind of like the direction that you were taking this look
00:53:36the thoughtfulness that you had while applying the doilies onto the garment was nice but I wish
00:53:43that the bottom of the dress was pegged even more can I see the back of it I mean I think you still
00:53:50could have pegged it even more and just put the slip higher so she could have had more mobility the
00:53:55fit at the waistline wasn't flattering on your model if the dress was gonna be so straight on
00:54:00the bottom then maybe showing more skin here would have felt like okay we're still flattering her body
00:54:05so I'm curious if that was intentional or if that was a result of how challenging it was to use this
00:54:11fabric I'm from a very conservative country that we don't show up front if our backs are showing we
00:54:16don't show up back to the front showing so that's my design aesthetic I love what you did with the
00:54:21ombre and I like the fact that you chose the doilies to mimic lace where I think you missed I think she
00:54:32was drowning in so much doilies the end result needed some more work thank you project sorry Anna you can
00:54:42leave the run okay let's bring out one of our highest scores let's bring the model up okay Christina how did
00:54:55you make this so this is all plastic sequins flowers I create with a lighter and plastic cups and plastic
00:55:04containers and I use also aluminum containers and I cut the leaf shapes and I created peacock feathers
00:55:15first inspired by Aileen's flowers last time that's where I was like where have I seen them before and
00:55:22you made the feather from aluminum as well yeah wow I'm shook I know I'm sorry and what's the base of
00:55:31the dress the mesh from the bar and how are the sequins applied I use a glue gun the most edge part I put
00:55:38the glue and I attach it to the base you can like obviously see all the work that's gone into it the
00:55:44metal pasties that are like somehow integrated within this dress insane can we see the back also the
00:55:50noise of sex like I love the sounds it looks really really expensive as well thank you I appreciate I love
00:55:56the way that you use this challenge creating what would be a new sequin a new feather I think she
00:56:04look great I can feel the confidence of that design I think I love everything about this look it feels
00:56:12like what's next a truly fresh take on a cocktail dress this would have been show-stopping had you
00:56:21blown your budget at move all right thanks Christina Jessica you can get the one much you all have given us
00:56:32thanks quite a bit to talk about and leave the runway and we will see you soon thank you thank you
00:56:39congrats to be safe good night stand behind my dress yeah all right let's discuss who the winner should
00:56:49be okay should we start with Chantal I have never seen straws look sexier the execution and the fit on
00:56:57that look was I think some of the best that has ever been here whether it was an unconventional
00:57:03material or something that you could find in a fabric store from an Italian vendor the construction was
00:57:08insane I think Chantal has emerged as a clear front-runner in this competition I think we have to
00:57:15transition to Christina she also delivered something very modern yeah very creative sequins rosettes flowers
00:57:25others she like made it all on anybody else an aluminum looking nipple cover would have been the
00:57:32statement and it's like it was an afterthought it was so done and from such a feminine point of view I
00:57:37love the ombre effect I love the silhouette I love the transparency there's so much to love about this look
00:57:43what about Aaron I thought he did a really good job he used the materials really cleverly yes we've
00:57:52seen it but we really haven't seen it made out of straws and linings and stir sticks the more I kept
00:58:00looking at the skirt I could never have told you that that was like a drink stir yeah dang it really
00:58:04looks like a beautiful sequin skirt okay I think we know who the winner is let's move on to who should
00:58:12go home should we start by talking about chastity's it was lovely and baroque from the front and it was
00:58:19green hot glued popcorn from the back but it was ambitious and there was some visual story there yeah
00:58:25to have that creativity to create a texture was kind of incredible up close I have to concede it was not
00:58:33perfect but I just love the way it moved down the runway I love that blouncy a-line skirt I thought it
00:58:39was nice just nice I thought it was nice at least chastity's design flattered her models gorgeous curves
00:58:48which is more than I can say from my boy project today I liked the idea of using doilies to create
00:58:56lace but ultimately the fit of that dress was like a paper bag I did think that he at least from the waist up
00:59:05made it look like lace which I thought was nice he cut up a whole leather couch
00:59:10which made his look look really stiff that was part of the problem
00:59:17let's talk about Anna I felt like she just kind of threw everything on there without a plan it was
00:59:21just too gimmicky I didn't know what Anna was trying to say with this look I completely disagree she was the
00:59:29only person on this runway that created a print I think that she brought in her roots with the
00:59:37shape of the silhouette I thought it was clever the length was nice and this the little slit was nice but
00:59:42it just felt convoluted it was the worst when I'm looking at the three who were in the bottom all three
00:59:49are pretty chaotic I'm here to say you told them that they were perfect it was only nuanced you said
00:59:55before we even started it was fantastic but I did think it was fantastic okay but who do you want
01:00:00to send home because we have to can I just say I am living for this fashion family feud moment that
01:00:05we're having right now I'm actually like sweating in so many places right now this is getting so heated
01:00:10it's very hard
01:00:21Chantal Aaron and Christina you all created modern and innovative looks that to be honest we couldn't
01:00:32even tell were made from unconventional materials great job all around
01:00:38Chantal congratulations you are the winner of this challenge
01:00:48your construction and the fact that we couldn't even tell they were straws really pushed you over the
01:00:56edge so congratulations Chantal the Felicito the total for us on seeing it for favor for fuerza that
01:01:05Aaron and Christina you are also in you can all leave the runway thank you thank you oh my god just the
01:01:15fact that I was out of this competition after putting like all my effort and my soul and then having the
01:01:22chance to start all over and to show everybody and the judges my work I feel so proud of myself that I did
01:01:30something great
01:01:31chastity project and Anna it's clear that none of you managed your time well and it showed in your
01:01:41looks it's gonna be a real heartbreaker tonight all of you are tremendously talented Anna your look was
01:01:49in complete and your model was overwhelmed by donors chastity your execution fell short and up close the dress looked too crafty
01:02:08project you are out I'm so sorry project I want you to leave from designer to designer knowing you are incredibly talented this may be a moment that is challenging but I hope in this moment you will not let go of that and use it to fuel you forward because we really cannot wait to see you shine
01:02:35thank you from the bottom of my heart for this experience it's truly been an honor being here I know I'm crying but I'm actually going home with pride and thank you for receiving my message and seeing it through my work your journey does not end here it's only up from here thank you
01:02:56chastity and Anna you are both in thank you all you can leave the runway
01:03:05to leave at this point definitely feel sad because I really was looking forward to make it top four and put on a show it's the end
01:03:18it's the end yeah I had a whole plan I'm not gonna cry I'm trying not to because I want to walk out of here proud
01:03:30it gets harder it just is what's happening you know you guys are all really good you're a great designer but you're also leaving here a great artist you brought color to the workroom I really enjoyed working with you I think you're really inspiring and you're gonna do really amazing things
01:03:47thank you all right say goodbye send you the workroom to clean up your space being on this platform to represent my country usually these stories never get to be told or see people that look like me doing the stuff that I was doing here at Project Runway
01:04:05I was very happy and pleased to kind of share my story with the people of Haiti the young boys and girls out there don't let the misery is the reason why you stuck where you are if you know how to make clothes out of bottle cap master that craft push yourself to be better despite all you can be somebody I came here somebody I'm coming out of this
