00:01Previously on Project Runway...
00:03Here is the season 13 of Project Runway.
00:06The fans of the show voted to bring back a former Project Runway designer.
00:11It's Amanda Valentine from season 11.
00:14I'm back.
00:15For this first challenge, you're going to give the judges one look for spring.
00:20Sandia's look is kind of weird.
00:22Angela is running around the workroom like a mad woman.
00:25Excuse me.
00:30You took something and made it into a fantasy.
00:35You have the creativity to make it in this show.
00:39Sandia, you are the winner of this challenge. Congratulations.
00:42Thank you so much.
00:43I was the only one that called that everyone else thought you were in the bottom.
00:47I'm confused.
00:49I have no clue anymore what the judges are looking for.
00:52I thought this was terrible.
00:55Looks like she's wearing some big diaper.
00:57Jefferson, I'm sorry, that means you're out.
01:00Go create déplastymışaviour.
01:03I won't remember.
01:04Forces out as bedesat eggs in a crumble.
01:07No.
01:08Look at him.
01:09That would be his fate.
01:10Ray improb息.
01:12Eleven of him.
01:13Wait, wait, wait, wait.
01:14Okay, wait...
01:15Hey, we both try the dinner truckers.
01:16Here's your gotta...
01:17Listen.
01:18Common.
01:19Let's go, Seth.
01:20No.
01:21No.
01:22Give us an appointment.
01:23No.
01:25We need.
01:26Start working.
01:26First opportunity.
01:28Cindy's will have to have to doicher.
01:29Wake up, wake up.
01:31Oh, snap.
01:32Popcorn?
01:34Breakfast is set.
01:36This morning, there's popcorn on our kitchen counter.
01:40We're a little bit confused at what this next challenge is going to be.
01:44And we've got a note.
01:46Good morning, designers.
01:47We are sending you out for a little morning matinee.
01:50We've arranged a private screening for you at the Village East Cinema.
01:54Hugs and kisses, Heidi and Tim.
01:56Oh, wow.
01:59Oh, my God.
02:00I'm thinking we're going to design for a particular movie.
02:04Okay, we'll have to dress a movie star.
02:06Like something to go into the movie.
02:08Something three-dimensional, not just two-dimensional.
02:11Or is it about popcorn?
02:14Is it red carpet?
02:15I'm into that.
02:16That's so cool.
02:18The first runway show was exciting.
02:21Seeing Sandia win was a shocker,
02:23only because the design wasn't my favorite.
02:26We all thought Sandia was in the bottom
02:28and that she was going to go home.
02:30I think it's getting late, guys.
02:32We should start getting ready.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Movie day.
02:35I love movies.
02:36Walking to the theater today is so exciting.
02:50Enjoy the show.
02:55Wow.
02:56Oh, my God.
02:57We're walking through the door and it's insane.
03:00Thank goodness.
03:01There's going to be something so crazy to this
03:03because we're not sending us to the movie theater
03:05just to go watch a movie.
03:06You know it was going to be a kick-ass challenge.
03:13In a world where fashion has forever ruled the silver screen.
03:20Looking at the trailer, my heart starts racing like,
03:23oh, this is so cool.
03:24The movie experience has been enjoyed by everyone,
03:27big and small, for over a hundred years.
03:35Hello, designers.
03:37You didn't think I would just let you kick back
03:39and have a day at the movies, did you?
03:41You're here because your next challenge
03:43is all about the movies.
03:45You will be incorporating your movie experience
03:47into your fashion designs
03:49because this is an unconventional challenge.
03:51Oh.
03:56Ugh.
03:57It's an unconventional challenge.
03:58Honestly, I'm a little bit scared.
04:00I can't believe that they put it this soon in the competition.
04:04Oh.
04:05I am excited for an unconventional challenge.
04:08I'm here to prove I can adjust to whatever direction I have
04:11because I am a great designer.
04:13You will be using the array of movie and movie experience items
04:16found in this theater as the materials for your challenge.
04:19You'll have access to items like the camera
04:21and lighting department materials,
04:23the art department props,
04:25costume and wardrobe,
04:26and even the concession items
04:28you'd find in a movie theater like this.
04:30Action.
04:31Woo!
04:32Hi.
04:33Hi.
04:34Hi.
04:35I love the unconventional challenges, I have to tell you.
04:39I also love this particular challenge
04:41because it really is about fashion and film.
04:43And I have another twist.
04:47You're each sitting in a group of three.
04:52Oh.
04:53And each of the five groups of three comprise our five teams.
04:58The designers you were sitting with are your teammates.
05:02I can't get away from it.
05:03Teams.
05:04Come on.
05:05I remember this feeling.
05:09I hope this is the only one.
05:11I'm like, second challenge?
05:13Yeah.
05:14I see a mixed range of emotions.
05:16Sitting next to my team is
05:19Hernan, Carrie, and Sandia.
05:21That's probably the worst team possible,
05:24and I would not want to be on that team.
05:26I am very surprised that Sandia won the first challenge,
05:31and I do wish that she didn't have immunity.
05:34Each team must create three cohesive, unconventional looks.
05:41You will have 15 minutes to assemble as much
05:45of the unconventional materials as you like.
05:47There's a ton of additional product at the concession stand
05:50in the lobby.
05:51Furthermore, you'll only be able to leave the theater
05:54with what you can physically carry.
05:57Oh, shit.
05:58You have one day for this challenge.
06:02All right.
06:03Design teams.
06:05Action!
06:11Boom, I'm out.
06:12And I'm the first one down there.
06:13So I get all easy, sparkly, beautiful, blue, iridescent,
06:17so many different colors.
06:18Oh, my God, Angela!
06:19Angela was freaking out.
06:24Hi!
06:25Everyone's claws are out.
06:26Everyone's crashing into each other.
06:28And it's really hard because it was such a tight space.
06:31Is everyone checking in with their teammates?
06:34Yes.
06:35OK.
06:36We decide we're going to grab all of the same color palette,
06:39and I took every single white straw.
06:41You good, Mitch?
06:42Yeah.
06:43Look at all this.
06:44I got popcorn glass, too.
06:45OK.
06:46Shredded.
06:47Everything is done.
06:48All right, designers.
06:49Time is up.
06:50Let's head back to the work room.
06:52It looks like you're taking the cinema with you.
07:11Hey, there's popcorn over there, too.
07:13Cool.
07:14We have chains?
07:15Yeah, she wraps me.
07:16Yeah.
07:17Hopefully we can cut it up.
07:18Unconventional really gets to show your creative side.
07:20Be funny.
07:21Be quirky.
07:22Make something that looks really wearable.
07:23Or you can do something over the top.
07:28That smell of popcorn is intoxicating.
07:30Wow.
07:31Some business at hand.
07:33There will be a winning team.
07:35One designer from that team will win this challenge.
07:38There will be a losing team.
07:40And one designer from that team will be eliminated.
07:44There are no team leaders.
07:45You're each responsible for the work of the team.
07:48However, don't sit in the back seat and let two other designers drive you.
07:53And, Sandhya, be very happy that you have immunity.
07:59All right.
08:00I will see you later.
08:01Have fun.
08:03Oh, wow.
08:04I've got a plan that I'm so stoked on.
08:08We should talk about the colors.
08:10Like the green would be really interesting with the black and white.
08:13Totally.
08:14You know, we all kind of like the futurism, right?
08:16Yeah.
08:17Like in a 1960s future.
08:18Yeah.
08:19We're so stoked.
08:20We immediately think science fiction.
08:22We all kind of have that little bit vintage vibe, but we're going into the future.
08:26Fifth Element's one of my favorite movies, so.
08:28Yes.
08:29I kind of want to keep it obviously sleek, like we all are.
08:32Right.
08:33Exactly.
08:34More structured, nothing drapey.
08:35You'll go more Fifth Element.
08:36You'll go more like 2001.
08:37I'll go more Barbarella.
08:38Ooh.
08:39By a stroke of pure luck, we're all kind of feeling the same vibe.
08:44I don't know how that happened.
08:46The only thing, it's, this is where you'll get, you'll get from the judges, is anytime you
08:51use something that is so close to fabric, like you have to, what they respond to is when
08:57you make your own textile.
08:59I'm literally the only person that's done this before.
09:02What do you guys have?
09:03I have like a million ideas and I don't know how to condense them in one.
09:09Everything I got is like very futuristic.
09:12Sandia, come on baby.
09:13What?
09:14Can I have something to cut this?
09:15I have a lot of people who work with me.
09:17I do a lot of freelancers, so for me it's more easy to work with, with teens.
09:22Sit the side on a shape and then.
09:24We cannot figure out the change until we get, until we see the material.
09:28Let's do whatever we want to and then look at it and then like try and bring it together.
09:32Okay.
09:33So that there's cohesion.
09:34I want to show you.
09:35Because otherwise we wouldn't even start and it'd be like a clash.
09:37Yeah.
09:38We're on the same page.
09:39Obviously when there are three people in the team who have very different aesthetics,
09:43if you try to force things, you know it breaks.
09:46I mean our materials are very industrial and I really like that idea of like doing the headpieces.
09:52Yeah, but take them apart.
09:53Maybe like take them apart and maybe we can do like shoes.
09:57The overall vision for us is more of a high fashion avant garde vibe.
10:02I like all your ideas.
10:03Good job.
10:04We should have like a blue collection.
10:07Okay.
10:08And kind of just do like a sexy number with this.
10:10A black dress.
10:11Yes.
10:12We took each other's styles and kind of meshed it all together.
10:15And we hound in on cocktail dresses in a blue tint.
10:20Perfect.
10:21Cool.
10:22Yeah.
10:23How do we tie this to the movies?
10:24Maybe if we just try to make our women like strong, dark femme fatale or like villains of the cinema.
10:29My garment is going to be a textural coat of cut straws like in Cruella de Vil, Dalmatian fur jacket.
10:36It ties in so well.
10:38I don't know what it, does it have to be villain?
10:42Could it be like fairy or like angel, villain?
10:47I just feel like that angel has nothing kind of to do with the movies.
10:50Last year I had my wedding.
10:51I filled it with white paper flowers.
10:53So it creates this really beautiful texture.
10:56So I just want to work with that.
10:58In a movie there's always a good guy, a bad guy.
11:00Right, I wanted to play the good guy.
11:02Aerie can be mystery creepy.
11:05Okay, try to make it as evil as you can.
11:07Angela seems to be not very flexible in her design process.
11:12Do your thing, what you do best, and I go back to glory.
11:18Are you good?
11:19Are you stressed out?
11:20Yeah, no, that's good.
11:21Yeah.
11:22Okay.
11:23I feel nervous.
11:24I get intimidated.
11:26So I don't know if I'll be able to make it, pull it through.
11:31I know I might be in trouble.
11:39Coming up on Project Runway.
11:41What?
11:42Is it going to be a big braiding cuckoo clatter?
11:44If I go home for that.
11:45Well, you won't.
11:46I'm not hearing team in any of those.
11:54Today's unconventional materials challenge is taking movie-inspired items and turning them into fabulous garments.
12:03We're in groups of three, and we make three pieces, and they all have to be cohesive.
12:13Today's challenge is a one-day challenge, so it's going to be like...
12:17When you post, for example, you see a three-quarter, and that's it.
12:20You're just putting it in?
12:22So when I took these numbers on transparencies, they reminded me of how when a movie starts, you know, it goes five, four, three, two, one.
12:36It has this own meaning of speed, motion, of this anticipation of waiting for things to happen.
12:43Sundia, you're not doing those numbers and letters, are you?
12:48I am, I am.
12:49But how does that correspond?
12:51Exactly.
12:52So the thing is, if we are using the same materials and similar techniques, it'll end up looking like three same looks, just done differently.
13:01Okay, in my experience designing collections and what they want to see, they're going to say something about that, and I'm not sure it's going to be a positive thing.
13:08I want to do what I believe in and what I am as a designer.
13:13If I go home for that...
13:15Well, you are.
13:16Sundia is kind of confusing me because she says, you guys just tell me what you're doing and I'll just follow along.
13:23But then sometimes she'll be like, oh, well, I'm going to do this because I feel strong about this because it's me as a designer.
13:29We need to have one story, like a girl that can wear three looks.
13:32Exactly, that's what I'm trying to tell you.
13:33It needs to look like a collection, not the same materials made three different ways.
13:38I am trying to be as open as possible, but when one person strays, everything else can fall apart.
13:51I talked to Cindy because I don't like the number thing on her skirt.
13:53We have to be in the same idea.
13:55Right.
13:56Like I came in with a fresh perspective and it like stood out right away. I was like, what? Is she doing that?
14:02After like two hours into the challenge, I had a feeling this was a sinking Titanic.
14:07Hernan and Carrie just started bitching about me as soon as I left the room.
14:11Too different. It just doesn't go.
14:14I was very surprised she did that though. I was not expecting her to just stray like that.
14:19It looks like a cheerleader, cheerleader, a skirt.
14:23Hernan, Carrie and Sandhya are a mess.
14:26Sandhya is not agreeing with their ideas. They're not agreeing with her idea.
14:32They need to focus on making it cohesive.
14:38Yes, girl.
14:39My dress.
14:40Who would have thunk?
14:42I'm missing my scissors, my favorite scissors.
14:52Somebody talk here.
14:53I have been in Fashion Week twice before.
14:56I have my own brand since 2009 because my grandfather is my investor.
15:022012, my grandfather passed away.
15:05Somebody really believes so much on me that it's impossible to me to talk without crying.
15:12Hey, girl.
15:14Oh, thanks.
15:15I was born in Moscow, Russia.
15:17I was during the end of the whole communist regime.
15:20We basically escaped here with almost nothing.
15:23I started sewing when I was about 10 years old.
15:26I applied to my dream college, Otis College of Art and Design.
15:30And I got in and it really honed my skills.
15:33So, it's a nice, nice evolution.
15:40That's cute.
15:41That's some Darth Vader chic going on.
15:43Yeah.
15:46I'm originally from East Germany.
15:48I escaped to the West before the wall came down.
15:51I got into fashion because I couldn't find anything for myself.
15:55And I slowly expanded it into women's fashion.
15:59And I'm self-taught and naturally talented.
16:03Maybe it would be even interesting to have the print shown.
16:06Because it's movie script.
16:08I like it the white.
16:09Because it gives the texture and it's not too busy.
16:12I was born in Hong Kong and I wanted to be a fashion designer ever since I was young.
16:16But money was tight when we were growing up.
16:18So, I decided to go into computer engineering.
16:21After graduation, I started a full-time job.
16:23But I still had this earning to do fashion design.
16:26So, I quit my job and now I'm starting my fashion design career.
16:30And glue it.
16:31Like right there.
16:32Like a lot, right?
16:33Yeah.
16:34My model is going to be a sweaty ass, you know what.
16:36How is everyone?
16:43A lot of meaningful eye glances and no words.
16:49All right.
16:50Well, I'm going to check in with each of our teams.
16:53So, talk to me.
16:54What are you doing?
16:55Okay, what is that?
16:56This is the CD.
16:57Outer CDs.
16:58Isn't that cool?
16:59Yeah.
17:00Once this gets picked up, it kind of does its little shape thing.
17:03They're like fish scales.
17:04They have a fish scale now.
17:05You know what I love about this?
17:06I didn't know what it was.
17:07Yeah.
17:08Yeah.
17:09So, I used the hats for the hips.
17:12What are they?
17:13They're the yellow hats.
17:14Oh.
17:15Yeah.
17:16So, I stitched them into the muslin and then I've been like hot gluing all the tape here.
17:21We kind of just went with a theme with cocktail dresses.
17:26This is made out of the popcorn bags.
17:28The braiding detail, is it going to be a big braiding poo poo platter?
17:32Um.
17:33Sharkita and Mitchell.
17:34What do you think?
17:35I think it's going in the right direction.
17:36Yeah.
17:37I like it.
17:38I'm happy I had Mitchell and Sharkita with me getting our ideas out there and making sure
17:43that it's cohesive.
17:44Well, we kind of started with this idea of maybe the villains on the screen.
17:50So, it's like villains in fashion films.
17:53Okay.
17:54So, it kind of started with maybe like a bit of a Cruella de Vil.
17:56Okay.
17:57So, this is where the black and white started.
17:59Huh.
18:00Here's the front one here.
18:01I mean, I have to tell you it's extraordinary.
18:02Yeah.
18:03It's all straws.
18:04It's all straws.
18:05And I'm thinking of, I've added these little dashes of black and white starts to tie it
18:10in.
18:11I would never dream that those were straws.
18:12Okay.
18:13That's good.
18:14And you've really transformed it.
18:16Yeah, but still trying to keep the straw theme going somehow to tie it all in.
18:22Okay.
18:23So, I was thinking maybe adding a second row of straws.
18:27Like, I thought also maybe like ending it with black, like having this all dangling.
18:32Got it.
18:33Right now, I'm just, this is all going to be covered in white.
18:35This is just for the underneath.
18:37Um.
18:38What is, what is that white?
18:39The scripts.
18:40Oh, you're using scripts?
18:41Yeah.
18:42So, it's, I'm going to play around and like drape these and it's going to come up to
18:47create a higher color to give that villain effect.
18:52And then I want to incorporate some of these like flower textures on the bottom.
18:57I don't understand the flowers at all.
19:00I just think the flowers are a, what?
19:02Well, the thing is, okay, I didn't really originally want to do this villain plan.
19:07I wanted to play with textures.
19:09But if there are two looks that offer cohesion and one look that's a, what?
19:13Mm-hmm.
19:14Then that's not going to be good for the team.
19:17Yeah.
19:18Yeah.
19:19You're right.
19:20Carry on.
19:21Okay.
19:22Angela, I feel like her confidence is really low right now.
19:25I mean, that poor girl is broken.
19:29We saw these movie reels.
19:31Uh-huh.
19:32And we just went for them.
19:33So, as a team, we've decided we'll have a little futuristic look.
19:36Okay.
19:37So, I'm doing an asymmetrical top where I'll do a little exaggerated shoulder with the movie reel.
19:43But then I'm doing a skirt and keep my skirt a little basic and wearable.
19:47Hernan, Carrie, how are you feeling about what Sandhya's doing?
19:50We talked about already a couple of scenes.
19:54Earlier.
19:55Earlier to the idea, original idea that everybody has to be the same.
19:58The question I always have when I look for cohesion is, would the same customer wear it?
20:03Well, I think if we get a chance to explain our design a little differently.
20:06No, I'm giving you the chance.
20:07Explain.
20:08It's for a futuristic feel like we all really love.
20:11Well, I mean, for me right now, it feels costumey.
20:18I'm doing like, um, using all this, uh, the film.
20:23I'm making a very kind of sexy and very, uh, kind of futuristic piece.
20:28I'm not hearing team in any of this.
20:30I'm hearing three individual designers who happen to be together.
20:34And they're doing their own thing.
20:36And that's exactly how this looks.
20:38Can I be honest?
20:40Just what I see now, no cohesion.
20:43Right.
20:44A team's going to be on the bottom.
20:47And a designer from that team is going to go home.
20:50And it's not going to be Sandia.
20:51Yeah.
20:52The way things look to me right now, Arnon, Carrie, one of you will be packing your bags tomorrow.
20:58And I don't want that to happen.
20:59So, how are you all?
21:03The first thing that we saw when we saw everything was kind of bright colors, like futuristic.
21:08Futurism from the sixties.
21:10Oh, that's great.
21:11So, I'm going to do the dress.
21:12It's going to be covered in the tape and the film.
21:15This is actually the back of a jacket.
21:17Oh, you're doing a jacket too?
21:19Yeah.
21:20Are you biting off too much?
21:22Amanda, Christine, what are your thoughts?
21:26Looking at the time now, I feel the same way about everyone.
21:29I think we're all...
21:30You do?
21:31And I think we need to narrow it down to one piece.
21:33Right.
21:34Well, design teams, this was a very wonderful session.
21:37I'm incredibly excited about what you're doing.
21:40Your models will be in in an hour.
21:42You will have until 10.30 tonight.
21:44I will see you in the morning.
21:47Bye.
21:48Bye.
21:49Use the gold here.
21:50Gold.
21:51Gold.
21:52I have gold in my sweater.
21:54You don't go in...
21:55Just stop.
21:56It doesn't work.
21:57We don't have more time to mess it out.
21:59So, I decide for the team, what are we going to do?
22:02Baby, I told you so many times that it didn't work.
22:05I told you like four times already and you are safe, you know?
22:08Cornering me and saying all that to me will not help you.
22:12What will help us is...
22:13I mean, listen to me.
22:15Listen to me.
22:16I mean, it doesn't work and she can do something right now,
22:20but you have to follow what are we doing right now.
22:23Okay.
22:24You all right?
22:25I'm fine.
22:26I just didn't want to cry.
22:27I know.
22:28That's all right.
22:29You're so bad.
22:30I'm trying to like listen.
22:32Sandy was getting upset and I wanted to know why she was upset.
22:36I'm like standing by the door and I hear him yelling.
22:39He just humiliated at you.
22:40I mean, they didn't get a very good critique.
22:42I mean, she is safe.
22:44Come here.
22:45Just get here.
22:46She got this.
22:47Calm down.
22:48Get through it.
22:49Okay?
22:50I didn't realize so early in the competition people are going to be so nasty,
22:54so I asked him if he could sit with me in the designer's lounge to talk.
22:58So, what would you like to talk about?
23:00I wanted to ask about the previous challenge.
23:03I know the construction was bad, but what feedback did you have?
23:05Do you really feel it was?
23:07I mean, you won.
23:08What am I saying?
23:09You won the whole challenge.
23:10Why are you concerned?
23:11I'm being picked on really bad.
23:13Oh, dear.
23:14I don't want to cry.
23:15I want to tell my stories in a way that I believe.
23:20So, I just wanted your feedback.
23:22I'm so excited to have you here because you have such a strong voice as a designer.
23:27You could win this entire season.
23:30You make me so humble.
23:31Oh, please.
23:33Ooh, yes.
23:34Better.
23:35Yep.
23:36Yep.
23:37All right.
23:38Love that.
23:39Guys, I want you guys to do this, too.
23:40You know?
23:41I'm doing that.
23:42Using that, too.
23:43I'll just do this technique as well.
23:44Okay.
23:45If they think in their technique we will get cohesion, then let me go with it.
23:48Welcome to our team.
23:49Welcome to our team.
23:50Welcome to our team.
23:51They thought I couldn't be sophisticated, so I wanted to show them that I could be better.
23:56I'm so excited.
23:57I'm so excited.
23:58I'm so excited.
23:59I'm so excited.
24:00Let me see.
24:01All right.
24:02Let me make some marks.
24:03Okay.
24:04So, I'm going to have to add a lot more on the side.
24:05Just because I don't want side boob.
24:06Amanda, you're quiet.
24:07Are you okay?
24:08I'm just trying to figure out how to not make it the worst.
24:09It's just rough.
24:10Maybe you just need to see something underneath.
24:11Yeah.
24:12Ooh.
24:13All right, guys.
24:14It's time to head out.
24:15Whoa.
24:16Whoa.
24:17Whoa.
24:18Whoa.
24:19Whoa.
24:20Whoa.
24:21Whoa.
24:22Whoa.
24:23Whoa.
24:24Whoa.
24:25Whoa.
24:26Whoa.
24:27Whoa.
24:28Whoa.
24:29Whoa.
24:30Whoa.
24:31Whoa.
24:32Whoa.
24:33Time for now.
24:34Coming up on Project Runway.
24:35Ah, it's so scary underneath there.
24:37I love it.
24:38The other models should be scared.
24:39They might get cut.
24:40Whew.
24:41Where's my thread?
24:42No.
24:43Oh, I'm nervous.
24:45You're going to be finished?
24:52Okay.
24:53Runway day.
24:55Do you need those little blue ones?
24:57No, please take them.
24:58Oh, thanks.
24:59Here you go.
25:00Tell me.
25:01Should I do the fringe at the bottom?
25:02Should I do that right now?
25:03I think it'd be a good time.
25:04Okay.
25:05Good morning, design teams.
25:06Good morning, guys.
25:07Good morning, Tim.
25:08How is everybody?
25:09Good.
25:10Awesome.
25:11Yeah.
25:12Excellent.
25:13Your models will be coming in shortly.
25:15You will have two hours to send them to the Philip B Hair Studio and the Mary Kay Color Design Studio.
25:22The Aldo Styling Wall is to my right.
25:25You, of course, will all be using it.
25:27And I want to tell you something.
25:28Looking around this room, there is some spectacular work.
25:33Wow.
25:34Wow, wow, wow.
25:36Keep it up, everyone.
25:38Your models will be in soon and I will be back later.
25:43No.
25:44My hands are, like, shaking today.
25:49It's that kind of thing.
25:50Because we're nervous.
25:51Because we're nervous.
25:52Did we come in at eight?
25:54I'm hoping for today that Sean and I will be able to incorporate Angela's design.
25:59It is very apparent now that it will be an issue and we're trying to think of ways to make it cohesive.
26:09Do you want me to cut anything for you? Like, cut more of these shapes?
26:12I don't know.
26:13I don't think you'll match.
26:14Okay.
26:15No, it's not that you're doing bad.
26:16It's just...
26:17No, I just don't know what you've been doing, so I'm just making it up.
26:18Right, and it's one person's hand, you know?
26:20You can't, you can't do it.
26:21Like, you know what I mean?
26:22It's fine.
26:23Angela ends up cutting paper and kind of trickles it.
26:27I'm like, oh my God.
26:28Compared to Sean and Faye's look, it's kind of pulling them down.
26:34Hey, girlie.
26:35Hey!
26:36Hey!
26:37Let me know if I poke you.
26:38I will scream.
26:39Hello.
26:40Welcome to the Philippi salon.
26:41Hi.
26:42How are you?
26:43We want like a square head straight from here and like flat on the top.
26:48We'll take these panels, we'll slick them back like really, really tight and gel them.
26:52So we can just straighten it out and make it look really neat and clean.
26:55Okay, sounds good.
26:56Yeah.
26:59What if we did like a gel and then a wave poke?
27:02As long as they're all the same from the front.
27:04Right.
27:05Okay.
27:06We'll gauge it according to the model.
27:07Hello team.
27:08Hi.
27:09Slight pet eye, peachy cheeks, and then a soft pink lip.
27:12The color of the ticket.
27:13Okay.
27:14I'm excited.
27:15We're going for a smokey eye.
27:16Okay.
27:17It's an avant-garde challenge.
27:18Right.
27:19So maybe we go a little geometric with them?
27:20I think I'm actually on the softer side.
27:21Okay.
27:22I heard you when you talk to her.
27:23We also want to be a little bit edgy and not just show like the usual smokey eyes.
27:26So I wouldn't like get too soft and that would be for all three.
27:42Designers in 10 minutes, you and your models and I are going down to the runway.
27:47All right.
27:48I'll be back.
27:49Hernan.
27:50I just called 10 minutes.
27:51Yeah.
27:52Yeah.
27:53It's going to be finished.
27:54Yeah.
27:55I am definitely looking forward to the runway.
27:56I feel like I made a very beautiful dress and I hope that the judges acknowledge that
28:01as an individual within the team.
28:04That feels good, yeah?
28:05Yeah.
28:06It's beautiful.
28:07Mine is the best and the other models should be scared because it's sharp.
28:11And if they get too close, they might get cut.
28:14I will do whatever you need to.
28:19Just don't move.
28:21You walked down the runway.
28:22Okay.
28:23Okay.
28:24I feel pretty good about the three looks together, but I'm worried that we're a little rough
28:28around the edges.
28:29My brain is bright.
28:31Design teams and models, we are going down to the runway.
28:35Let's go everyone.
28:36Let's go girls.
28:37Let's go.
28:38Fantastic.
28:39Yes sir.
28:40Yes sir.

29:41Welcome to the runway.
29:43As you know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out.
29:47There are 15 of you here and after tonight there will be 14.
29:52We send you on a movie date.
29:54But that didn't last very long now did it?
29:57No.
29:58Because Tim Gunn interrupted your movie to tell you about your next challenge.
30:02An unconventional materials team challenge.
30:05You were to create a cohesive mini collection using materials related to movie making and
30:11movie watching.
30:12One member from the winning team will be the winner.
30:15And one member from the losing team will be out.
30:19Sandhya you have immunity so you cannot be eliminated today.
30:24The winner of this challenge will have immunity for the next challenge.
30:28Alright let's say hello to our judges.
30:30First we have acclaimed fashion designer Zach Posen.
30:34Hello designers.
30:35Hi.
30:36Creative director for Mary Claire magazine Nina Garcia.
30:39Hi everyone.
30:40And guest judge, top fashion blogger Garance DeRay.
30:44Welcome.
30:46Hi.
30:47Hi.
30:48We're also very excited to have Tim Gunn here for the runway show.
30:50As you know he is your mentor and he will not be judging your looks.
30:54He does get one Tim Gunn save during the season which allows him to bring back an eliminated designer if he disagrees with the judges.
31:02We have an anonymous runway show.
31:03We the judges will not know which of you designed which look.
31:08Okay let's start the show.
31:09For how we started and for how bad the team dynamics were the clothes look well done.
31:25Sparkly.
31:26I'm feeling more hopeful about not being in the bottom.
31:32When the lights hit the film strips on my garment it is so pretty.
31:38I think that the fact that ours are wearable could work in our favor.
31:44She looks so chic and sophisticated and the dress fits perfectly.
31:56I'm really glad I've used that film.
31:59I knew her from the beginning.
32:01I don't think we're going to be in the bottom.
32:04We're going to be safe.
32:05Good job team.
32:06I think it's edgy and it's dramatic but yet still kind of fantasy with a high end taste level.
32:21I think that we hands down had this.
32:27It is definitely what I wanted to say.
32:33I love that we picked the green and we went graphic.
32:37I can't believe we pulled it off.
32:42I love our team's vibe.
32:44Sixties but modern.
32:53We took such a great risk.
33:02It is so cool because it actually looks like you can wear it.
33:08It looks like something that can be bought in a store.
33:11I definitely feel that we're going to be on top for this challenge.
33:16I think it's really well executed.
33:19It has a lot of movement.
33:21It's really dramatic.
33:23I'm like, yes, this is what I want it to look like.
33:29And she looks great in it.
33:32My dress is moving perfectly.
33:34It's catching the light the way that I was dreaming it would.
33:38Out of everyone's looks, my team was the most cohesive.
33:43Everything is spot on.
33:44I think this look represents me as a designer.
33:54It's got that delicate touch.
33:56It's gorgeous.
33:57Given the situation that I had to collaborate, I am happy with the look.
34:03I'm hoping it doesn't look too stiff and I think I pulled it off with the film strips on the bottom.
34:15Good job.
34:20It commands attention, you cannot tell that it is straws and it's intriguing.
34:27Nobody has anything else like it.
34:33The light hits my dress, it's a breathtaking moment.
34:40If I had to pick a favorite piece in my entire history of making clothes, the disc dress.
34:45I'm thinking all the trouble I went through getting these tickets to work and it turned out amazing.
34:58The fit on the model is good, I'm loving it.
35:01Loving it.
35:08I'm like boom, it's there, it's perfect.
35:15Seeing the looks, we're super excited and we're thinking we got this.
35:25Designers, what a fun and fabulous fashion show.
35:30Really, congratulations.
35:32There will be a winning team and a losing team.
35:35One member from the winning team will be the winner and one member from the losing team will be out.
35:41Before we move forward, I just want to say something.
35:44Sean and Faye, we really loved your looks.
35:48Angela, we did not like your look.
35:50And that brought your whole team down.
35:53If yours would have been up to snuff, you could have been in a winning team.
35:57Okay, if I call your name, please step forward.
36:00Kerry, Sandia, Hernan, please step forward.
36:07Christine, Amanda, Karina, please step forward.
36:12If I have not called your name, congratulations.
36:15Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round.
36:17You can leave the runway.
36:19The six of you represent the teams with the highest and the lowest scores.
36:25One member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge.
36:30And one member from the losing team will be out.
36:38The six of you represent the teams with the highest and the lowest scores.
36:43Christine, Amanda, and Karina, your team has the higher scores.
36:48Congratulations, you're the winning team.
36:52That's so awesome.
36:54That means Hernan, Sandia, and Kerry, you have the lower scores.
36:59You can leave the runway.
37:03Hello.
37:04Oh, you guys are already back.
37:05Wow, that was fast.
37:06You guys are bottom?
37:07Yeah.
37:08I don't agree with the decision.
37:10I'm feeling very shocked.
37:12I feel like I'm confused.
37:14I thought ours was at least interesting because we made a cool textured textile,
37:18and we made something wearable.
37:20Christine, Amanda, and Karina, tell us about your mini collection.
37:25We started talking about movies.
37:27She mentioned 2001, Space Odyssey.
37:29She mentioned Fifth Element.
37:31I mentioned Barbarella, and we just thought, oh my gosh, we're totally in the same vein.
37:36And I think that kept us on track.
37:38We kind of gravitated towards space age, but bringing it forward and kind of melding it with bright, vibrant colors,
37:45but also mixing it with, like, the classics black, white, and neutrals.
37:49What are the materials in the movie theater that you use to make this happen?
37:53All duct tape, masking tape, VHS tape.
37:57This lettering is what's making the front of her bodice.
38:01Amanda, what did you use?
38:02Zip line, a lot of cording, tons of speaker wire, nuts and bolts.
38:06Those straws are the kind of traditional red and white striped straws, but I just put black tape over the red.
38:12For my look, it's cording, and then for the bottom half of the dress, it's the marquee letters, cellophane, and then also duct tape.
38:20This is great. I mean, you're using text and font, something that immediately says, movie kiosk, but you've taken it, you know, into a new place, and you use transparency in a really interesting way.
38:32Your collection felt like the most original. It is cohesive. We have three completely different dresses, but they look like they belong in the same fashion show.
38:41It's really, really special. My favorite is the middle one. I think you did a fantastic job.
38:47Thank you. What I also appreciate is that you gave me three different shapes. They look like they're together, but they're very different.
38:55I think it was very stunning when the second dress started walking on the catwalk because the letters float.
39:01So I thought it was very smart because you really create an effect, you know, like people are like, wow, what is that?
39:07And yeah, the green really takes the collection all together. I want to see them very close, and I still can't believe you did all that in one day.
39:15Okay, we've heard what you had to say. You can leave the runway.
39:26Hi, guys. Hi. Congratulations.
39:29Thanks.
39:32So tell us about your mini collection.
39:34We try to interpret the gold age of Hollywood, but very literary. I mean, like, use the gold and the film to represent that era.
39:46At no point someone thought, dude, they all look the same.
39:50These are different looks than what we started with, and all of our designs were as different as you saw everyone else's.
39:55We're complex designers, so maybe that's what clashed, but other than that...
39:59Right, but this doesn't look complex. I mean, the shapes are like a mess.
40:04To me, they look like three girls out of a music video. It doesn't look like a fashion show.
40:09So for us, obviously, now we have to see which one is the worst one here.
40:13Taking yours out because you're not in the running anymore.
40:16I feel like the one on the right, which is yours, Hernan, at least it is a bit more fashion with the piece around the neck, you know, the bustier top, even though it doesn't fit great.
40:25We did this in last four hours. Stop. No more excuses. We're looking at what we have in front of us. It's fine.
40:32Sonia, you are very lucky that you are immune because yours is the worst out of all three. It's awful. It looks sloppy. It looks ugly. It just looks bad. And it brings your other two down.
40:47The designers manipulate the materials. You guys just put the film roll on it.
40:52It looks like the editing room floor.
40:54Unfortunately, you guys are the losing team. We're going to take a closer look at your outfits and we do have to pick a loser today.
41:02Thank you so much.
41:03Thank you, guys. Thank you.
41:11Hi, Tim. What a challenge.
41:13May we begin with the team on the bottom?
41:15Yes.
41:16Yes.
41:17Please.
41:18May we begin this morning?
41:19I was flabbergasted that they would execute the same film treatment and all three looks.
41:24It's so disappointing. It seems to me that these two did not have an idea and then they scrambled.
41:30Well, he was so intractable that they decided if you can't beat him, join him.
41:35Oh.
41:36So, yeah.
41:37Does he go because he messed up the whole team? Because he wouldn't budge.
41:40In a way, this collection was really his vision.
41:44For me, it feels like there's a lot of immaturity.
41:47Right.
41:48It is between Carrie and her nun. We can always get rid of both of them.
41:51All right. The winning looks.
42:01They had, in some ways, just as many issues.
42:04They used a lot of unconditional materials.
42:07Yes.
42:08Very proud of them.
42:09And they used color.
42:10My favorite is that one. That's great.
42:12It's great runway effect.
42:14Absolutely.
42:15They worked well together as a team and it shows.
42:19I made up my mind.
42:20Me too.
42:21I think we're all clear.
42:22Yeah.
42:23Designers, one member from the winning team will be the winner.
42:38And from the losing team, one or more of you will be out.
42:50Congratulations.

44:45next time on project runway what we want to see is what the future of fashion looks like
44:51as filtered through your design aesthetic what does the future look like to you really cold and dark that's sad this looks like she's going ice skating too gimmicky go at it
45:03unfortunately it didn't really work Houston we have a problem what is this it's weird whatever it is I don't want to wear it now and I don't want to wear it 20 years from now
