00:00He is the all-knowing, all-powerful, the great Buckeye Wizard of all time.
00:06He is Tim May from the Tim May Podcast with Clay Hall.
00:09Better known for his days of writing just excellent recaps and commentary and adventure when it comes to the Buckeyes.
00:17I have no idea what I'm saying.
00:17Let's go to the Make It Right, Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:20Here he is.
00:20Hi, Mr. Tim May.
00:21Best available Buckeye, Tim May.
00:23Best available Buckeye.
00:25How's it going?
00:26I'm a little underwater here.
00:30We got about three, three and a half inches of rain in about three hours last night.
00:36Holy mackerel.
00:38Yeah, it flooded my property.
00:40I'll flood if we get a huge rain, and we got a huge rain.
00:43My pond out front, I got like a 40-yard by 25-yard teardrop-shaped pond, you know, in my
00:52front yard.
00:53Wow.
00:54It runneth over.
00:55I've got a pump pumping out my pond.
00:58Wow.
00:59All right, then we got to do guy talk for half a second on this one.
01:01Your basement okay?
01:03Yeah, basement's all right.
01:04Okay, good, good, good.
01:05It's funny.
01:05It was one of those kind of like incessant, but not stupid.
01:09I don't know how to put it, but it's never fun when you got to go out and hook up
01:12your sump pump.
01:13No, that's not ideal.
01:15That's not what any of us are looking for.
01:16Tim, I got to tell you, after listening to you, working for the Wolves wasn't so bad in Columbus, was
01:20it?
01:20No.
01:21They treated us right.
01:22I got to tell you, I love working for them.
01:23Dude, the private plane, the dude, I was telling Ryan Day that the other day, because, you know, he has
01:28a pretty good hookup in his contract that allows him to use net jets, sometimes of personal use.
01:35I go, man, that'll be the last thing you give up in any negotiation.
01:40I mean, like, I don't even, that was the first point where I realized how great the company was that
01:47we were working for.
01:47And by the way, they don't have anything anymore, so I can also.
01:50No, no, they started going away.
01:52We got on a charter flight one time in Cedar Rapids coming back from an Iowa game.
01:57No, getting off the plane at Cedar Rapids, going out there for a game at Iowa.
02:01And the two pilots in the charter company were holding the nose of the plane before Jim Lachey and a
02:10couple of guys could get off, you know?
02:12I believe it.
02:13That's what we ended up on until they finally even line item vetoed that, you know?
02:19Oh, man.
02:20Those are the days, especially with, rest of the soul, Jim Carzados and Jim sitting at the back of the
02:25plane.
02:25Oh, yeah.
02:26And they'd be like, hey, can you guys spread out just so we can even out the weight on this
02:29thing?
02:30Oh, yeah.
02:30That was always a hairy feeling, just so you don't.
02:32Yeah, but those King Airs, the King Airs, that Convair, man, those are first-class airplanes.
02:38I didn't mean to digress, but.
02:39Yeah, I know.
02:41We're living our good old days.
02:42Well, they call that in NASCAR country, you know, they're always referring to their King Airs, you know what I
02:46mean?
02:46Yes.
02:46Because most flight, most NASCAR races are within an hour and a half, two hours flight of a King Air,
02:54you know, except for when to go on the West Coast and stuff.
02:56So, but anyway, I know that's not why you called me.
02:59I'm sorry.
02:59I don't know.
03:00I like going down memory lane with you.
03:02Absolutely.
03:02All right, Tim.
03:03So, a little bit of a closer memory of you.
03:05A couple days ago was the Ohio State Pro Day.
03:08Always a good time to see everybody coming down to Columbus to get to look at the latest and all
03:12of these prospects and what they look like.
03:15What stood out to you most at Ohio State Pro Day?
03:18Well, that the Browns have discovered it, you know what I mean?
03:21That's one of the good things, I mean, you probably would say.
03:25Tim, I just went on a 15-minute rant about what you were just, what you just said in one
03:29sentence, that the Browns have discovered the Buckeyes.
03:32Yes.
03:32So, does that mean I win because I did it in fewer words?
03:36Probably.
03:37I mean, yeah, that's why you, that's why, you know.
03:40I'll tell you what, bottom line is it was an interesting pro day because I think only four guys ran
03:4840-yard dashes because the other, you know, like the Stiles brothers had put their hay in the barn in
03:53Indianapolis at the Combine, you know, with their ridiculous, like I said, Sonny Stiles had like a Jesse Owens kind
04:00of pro day in the Combine performance.
04:04But, and his brother, his smaller but older brother, Lorenzo Stiles Jr., you know, he's got to get picked up
04:11by somebody because, you know, when you run a 4-2-7-40 and have a kickoff return or a
04:17touchdown in your resume, that looks pretty good.
04:20And the fact he switched over from offensive, from wide receiver to defensive back when he transferred back from Notre
04:26Dame to Ohio State, I mean, he can play, he can be a nickel guy for somebody.
04:30But, but it was interesting because there wasn't, like I said on radio here in Columbus this morning, I'm not
04:38preempting myself, sorry about that, guys.
04:39But, you know, it was one of the coolest things to watch Julian say and throw the ball in the,
04:45in the passing sequence when they had, when they had Cardinal Tate out there showing that, you know what, maybe
04:54the clocks were right, maybe the clocks were wrong.
04:56But this guy chews up ground and makes catches and gets open.
05:00That was what stood out.
05:01Cardinal Tate can help any team because anybody looking for a receiver who can get open and catch the ball
05:09and then do something with it afterwards, he, that, that's every team, all 32 teams in the National Football League,
05:16they can use a guy like that.
05:18And then Brandon Ennis was obviously, he was a quote, underclassman, but he was out there also catching passes.
05:24A couple of tight ends, Will Kaczmarek and Max Clare, both of those guys can help a team in my
05:30opinion.
05:30So it'd be interesting to see them.
05:32And then, then you had a couple of guys working out.
05:35Tywon Malone, a defensive tackle, you know, they got from, in the portal from Mississippi a couple, three years ago,
05:42finally came into his own the last part of the year, season last year.
05:46He ran really well, don't know what his numbers were, but he was a big man moving, you know what
05:51I mean?
05:51You know, sometimes you don't need numbers to see, hey, that big guy can, that big guy can fly.
05:57And then, and then Ethan Onionwa, who's a, no way of, no way of sugarcoating, it was a major disappointment
06:04from the transfer portal last year, was expected to come in probably the starting left tackle.
06:10But things didn't work out for him from the, for spring preseason camp, and he barely played.
06:16But anybody who sees him walk through the door goes, that guy, that guy looks like a football player.
06:23Let's see if we can coach him up.
06:25So that, that'll be an interesting guy to watch maybe on the third day of the draft, if somebody takes
06:30him, because he has, he has all the tools and stuff.
06:33But, man, what, what really stood out was the buzz about Julian saying just among guys afterwards, just how accurate
06:44he was.
06:44I know he's throwing against there, right?
06:46Right.
06:47But how accurate he was, he's gotten bigger than he was at the end of the season last year.
06:54They're, they're working on him running, as I say, they're working on him to run a, to run, in parentheses,
07:03a little, in close parentheses, more.
07:06They're not looking for him to come Lamar Jackson.
07:08So if he, if he displays a little bit more of that propensity to take off when there's nothing but
07:14green, green artificial turf in front of you, he's got a real episode.
07:18But there's no doubt about the elegance with which he throws a football.
07:21Those guys don't come along very often.
07:24And, of course, standing off in the back, you know, just watching, because you can, you can see my show
07:29from Wednesday, my show with, with Clay Hall, a little interview I got with Jeremiah Smith, who, you know, will
07:37be the show next year.
07:38It'd be interesting if Julian saying comes out, him, if they, if he throws to Jeremiah Smith in that little
07:44pro day next year, there'll be 400 NFL scouts here saying, saying, Hey, I discovered him.
07:50No kidding.
07:52No kidding.
07:53Just see what, how many should have seen what I saw yesterday.
07:56Go ahead.
07:56Was every team there?
07:59Oh, yeah.
08:00Everybody's there.
08:00All 32 teams had a rep.
08:02And, uh, you know, they, I think Alabama's pro day was the same day.
08:06Uh, it was like, it was like a weird day for pro days because, you know, there was a photographer
08:11there.
08:12He'd been at Notre Dame's the day before.
08:13And he said, uh, there were twice, at least twice as many pro scouts, scouts, coaches, uh, administrators at Ohio
08:21State Center was at Notre Dame.
08:23Wow.
08:23Uh, the day before.
08:24So that was an interesting stat.
08:26Um, I, and with that many teams are, this may not be a fair question.
08:30Could you get any kind of read on what the Browns looked at, what they liked?
08:34I know that's a tough question, but is it possible that, I don't know, did you get any kind of
08:39feel about any Browns-Buckeye connection?
08:43Not really.
08:44Not really.
08:45Only, uh, I know, uh, when we were talking, the short little brief thing we had with Caleb Downs, somebody
08:51asked him about the Bengals.
08:52What did he think about the Bengals?
08:53And he just said no comment because that's kind of the person he, kind of the way he is.
08:58Uh, his interviews leave a little bit to be desired, but, uh, his playing ability and ability to, to play
09:04the game of football from, uh, preparation and everything else.
09:07I mean, I, I opined, I've opined several times and did again on Wednesday.
09:12He ought to be the first defensive player taken.
09:14If you want a guy that's not only going to play his position at an elite level, but also help
09:21everybody else play their positions.
09:24There's the guy, you know what I mean?
09:25From a defensive standpoint.
09:27But, uh, you know, I didn't really get a take.
09:30I really didn't.
09:32It was kind of hard to, I heard some scuttlebutt about the Browns, but it's kind of hard to figure
09:37what the Browns are, are really after.
09:40They could use Carnell Tate, for example.
09:42Absolutely.
09:43And, uh, I can't remember what Carnell said, whether he had already visited with them or is going to visit
09:48with them.
09:48He was out there last week.
09:50Yeah, I believe he visited the Browns.
09:51Yeah, that's right.
09:51That's what he said.
09:52And so I would think they have great interest in him because, you know, he's, he, uh, he, I don't
09:58know how to explain it to you.
10:00He looks wiry and stuff, you know, kind of, especially when he's standing up next to Jeremiah Smith, but he's
10:04got good size to him.
10:06And he's got, dude, he's got great speed.
10:09I don't know what happened with the stopwatches and the electronic timing, whether there was a snafu, uh, but, uh,
10:17at Indy, but he didn't run the 40 because you know why, well, you know, why do that again?
10:22Because, uh, just leave a little bit of mystery, but he's visiting with a, he's taking visits with a lot
10:27of teams.
10:28So I would think the Browns would be interested in him just because you need him, you know, don't you
10:32agree?
10:33He had me at six, two.
10:34That's all I needed to hear.
10:36Yeah.
10:36Six, two.
10:37And he can run.
10:37He catches everything you throw to him.
10:39Um, it's just, it's just crazy that things come up that cause a buzz, you know, just like the thing
10:45about Caleb Downs is the degenerating or whatever ACL.
10:49He just kind of left that off because somebody just threw that out there.
10:53And then a couple of people ran with it without checking on it.
10:56And, uh, I mean, if you watch this guy do drills, he did do drills.
10:59He didn't run the 40.
11:00We did.
11:01He did do drills.
11:02Uh, I'm talking about Caleb Downs and you know, he can play for anybody.
11:07The legend, maybe even the UFL.
11:12Good luck.
11:13You imagine.
11:14Tell him coach.
11:15Oh, coach.
11:17Get wouldn't know what to do with the guy.
11:18It'd be outstanding.
11:18He'd be everywhere.
11:19That's junior too.
11:20That's not senior.
11:21The old days when Herschel Walker went to the, you know, the USFL, the owner of that team thought he
11:27was going to bamboozle his way into the NFL.
11:30I'm not going to name his name.
11:31I mean, he's got other problems he's dealing with today.
11:33The legend, Tim May joining us on the make it right.
11:36Call Kyle, right.
11:37Hotline.
11:38Of course, you can hear him on the Tim May show with Clay Hall as well.
11:41There's a lot of discussion going on to him about Arvel Reese.
11:44If he is a middle linebacker or an edge, what do you, you've watched a boatload of Arvel Reese.
11:49What do you do with him?
11:51I don't, I don't make him a middle linebacker.
11:53I know I've heard a little bit.
11:55I make him a guy that may be up on the line on the edge one minute and maybe an
12:01odd looking, you know, an odd front.
12:03I'd look at an odd front or, or, or can drop because he can drop and run with anybody.
12:10Uh, he's that kind of guy and he's, he is a, he's a physical specimen.
12:14And, you know, the only reason I was talking about, about Caleb being the first guy I would draft from
12:19a defensive standpoint is just what he offers across the board.
12:23I think Arvel Reese, you know, there's ballyhoo about him, but, but, but the interesting thing about the ballyhoo is,
12:31uh, is he going to be, uh, is he going to be, uh, what is he going to be?
12:39I guess more, what, what is he going to major in, in the NFL?
12:42Is he going to be that tweener guy that you do use like, uh, Matt Patricia used him, uh, you
12:49know, on the line one minute coming off the edge the next roaming into the middle.
12:53You know, uh, all kinds of ways you can use him, but in the NFL, you, you almost end up
12:59having to have a major, right?
13:01You know what I mean by a major and, uh, and what will, what, what will he fit?
13:05But he clearly athletically, wow.
13:08And he came into his own last year.
13:10That's what was cool about watching him.
13:12It was kind of like Mike Vrabel got drafted by the Steelers.
13:15They didn't know what to do with him.
13:17He goes to the, he goes, he goes to the Patriots under Bill Belichick.
13:23And he knows what to do with him and, uh, lining him up, dropping him off zone, zone blitz things,
13:30all that kind of stuff.
13:31And next thing you know, a couple of drafts later, everybody's looking for the next Mike Vrabel.
13:34When in fact, he was a misfit toy coming out of college.
13:39Yeah.
13:40You think about all the ways he was used in the pros, even way more than he was ever used
13:44at Ohio State.
13:45Catching touchdown passes.
13:47Touchdown pass.
13:47He should have been the MVP of that Rose Bowl.
13:50It's true.
13:51Um, five Buckeyes first round.
13:54Matt, I don't think Max Clare goes first round.
13:56I didn't even mention, I didn't even mention Caden McDonald.
13:58That's the guy that would make it five.
14:00Uh, probably, you know, you never know what's going to happen draft night guys.
14:03Y'all know that.
14:03No, I know.
14:04Just watch draft day, the movie.
14:06Uh, but, um, actually that movie was more real life.
14:09I think people gave it credit for, uh, but you always got to throw a love story in there,
14:13which messed up top, the original Top Gun, for God's sake.
14:17Major League.
14:18Yeah.
14:18Major League.
14:19Oh, yeah.
14:20Yeah.
14:20I just went to the other day.
14:21So, uh, what, what, the, uh, the, uh, the divorce attorney, uh, the guy, Corbin Burtson,
14:27where he knocked out, uh, Charlie C.
14:30Anyway, uh, who knew, right?
14:33Uh, but, uh, but Caden McDonald, he had a great, he didn't do any of the running, but
14:38he had one of those great, you know, positional workouts.
14:41And the cool thing about him is he was screaming when he was doing his moves and stuff, which
14:46was, uh, cool.
14:47But Caden McDonald is the guy who really just, wow.
14:51He trimmed himself up last year.
14:54Didn't really lose weight, but, but made, you know, fattish into muscle-ish if you follow
14:59my drift.
15:00Oh, I, I live it.
15:01Was the best.
15:02The other way.
15:02And my, I thought he was the best defensive tackle.
15:05And especially in the middle of the field, the A-gap dude, you know, which are more rare
15:09than big-time quarterbacks.
15:11Just do the math.
15:12More rare than big-time quarterbacks or the big-time A-gap dudes.
15:16I think he transformed himself into that.
15:18And I'm very curious that somebody might take a flyer on him earlier rather than later in
15:23the first round.
15:24But I think, I think most people agree he's going to be going to go in the first round of
15:28somebody
15:28because he's, those, those kind of guys are so rare, fellas.
15:31Igman Osin, too.
15:32That's the other one I was going to say.
15:33Maybe?
15:34I read a little bit.
15:35There's a guy.
15:36He's a, you know, somebody might take a, uh, he looks like Jeffrey Okuda.
15:41He runs around like Jeffrey Okuda.
15:43You know, what's going to hurt him is when people study the film, the video.
15:48There, I did it again.
15:49I keep wanting to say, everybody can say film, but it's video.
15:52When you study the video, you know, if you could just get him from, keep him from using
15:58his hands, because he's right there.
15:59He's one of those guys that can mirror people.
16:01And he's a big dude.
16:02I mean, a tall dude.
16:03And, uh, those guys, those rangy corners that can run and, uh, pretty much mirror the,
16:09uh, ride receivers, meaning his move.
16:11He makes that move.
16:12I make that move almost same time.
16:14Those guys are rare.
16:15And, uh, uh, like it's what's going to hurt him is his, uh, holding or, uh, pass interference
16:21things through the last couple of years.
16:23But I think somebody might take a flyer on him too.
16:26They might have six guys taken, you know, in the first round.
16:29That'd be crazy.
16:30All right.
16:30We will talk to you after the draft.
16:32My friend hit him straight, hit him straight.
16:33Hey, always a pleasure.
16:34Y'all call me and make sure Meredith gives me the prompt call before.
16:38Cause you know, she's one of my favorites.
16:40All right.
16:41We can do that.
16:41Oh, we came in.
16:42We're in Augusta in like two weeks.
16:44My friend, we will be talking.
16:45Yeah.
16:45I know, man.
16:47There's a lot of buzz in the air about a lot of things in golf.
16:51So, uh, that'll be interesting.
16:52All right.
16:53That's our next adventure with Tim May.
16:54Tim, thank you.
16:55Good luck with the pod.
16:57Always a pleasure, fellas.
16:58All right.
16:58See you later.
16:59Thank you, Tim.
16:59Make sure you listen to him on the Tim May podcast with Clay Hall.
