00:00Welcome in Mary Kay Cabot. And what are they going to do at 6-24?
00:03Let's welcome in Mary Kay Cabot from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com.
00:07She's on the Make It Right Call Kyle Wright Hotline. Mary Kay, hello.
00:11Hey guys, how you doing?
00:12We're doing well. What are the chances we're drafting a number 6 overall? Do we stay or do we go?
00:20I think the chances are pretty good that they stay there because you have to make sure that you have
00:24the right deal to move down.
00:26They're not going to move down just for the sake of it. You have to make sure that you're not
00:30trading away from someone really great.
00:32And then you also have to make sure you get the compensation that you're looking for.
00:37And it's not always easy to pull off those deals.
00:40But they are one of the first teams that I think teams will target for a move up.
00:46So I do think that they will get calls. They will have interest in the pick.
00:51It's just a matter of if the deal is good enough or not to make it.
00:55Are they totally at the mercy of the Giants and how the Giants want to set up their draft situation
01:02given that they could control the board?
01:06Well, the Giants do hold a lot of power right now. They definitely do.
01:11And there's still a lot of uncertainty about what's going to be happening 2-5.
01:17And there probably will be some shakeups up there.
01:22There will be some trades perhaps that do happen above the Browns.
01:26So they might not exactly know which one of their faves is going to be there at No. 6.
01:32But certainly what the Giants do is going to be pivotal.
01:36Because let's say that they really want Jordan Tyson.
01:41They might not be able to wait for him at No. 10.
01:44So they have to take him at No. 5.
01:46There are a lot of different ways that they can go there.
01:49But yes, that's going to be a huge factor.
01:51Mary Kay, who would you take at No. 6?
01:54Your personal opinion.
01:55And who do you think that they would take at No. 6 if they can't move out?
02:00You know, if they can't move out, I do think that it will come down for them to perhaps either
02:07the best tackle or the best receiver.
02:09And when I look at Andrew Berry's track record and his history, I can see the wisdom in mocking Spencer
02:18Fano to him there,
02:20which everybody and their brother is doing right now.
02:23So I can see that. I can see him doing that.
02:25He calls himself an offensive line snob.
02:28And we know that he loves to stock the trenches.
02:32So I could definitely see him doing that.
02:36You know, it will come down to possibly the best tackle or the best receiver.
02:42And they just have to decide which way they want to go.
02:45I personally would go with probably the best receiver there just because I feel like they need to score points.
02:53I feel like they need some sizzle on offense.
02:56I feel like they need weapons.
02:57I've been saying for months that they need two good pass catchers in this draft or in this cycle somehow,
03:05some way.
03:06And that can be a tight end and a wide receiver.
03:08That can be two wide receivers.
03:11But I would probably go with the best offensive weapon that I could find there at No. 6 if I'm
03:18staying right there.
03:19And if it came down to Carnell Tate and Jordan Tyson, for me, the only thing that scares me about
03:26Tyson a little bit is the injury history.
03:29But other than that, I really, really love his game.
03:32So I would probably go with him there.
03:34Forgive me for asking this, but I have to.
03:36I can't help myself.
03:37Now, I do a lot of driving around, so sometimes I'm only paying half attention.
03:41He is quoted as calling himself an offensive line snob?
03:46Yes.
03:47Can a guy who's known for taking Jed Wills over Tristan Wirfs call himself an offensive line snob?
03:56Well, you know, it's a good point.
03:58They thought they were taking the best tackle in that draft.
04:02And, you know, it just didn't work out that way.
04:04And Tristan Wirfs is someone that has been able to make that transition from right tackle to left tackle.
04:12That was unfortunate.
04:14That was really unfortunate.
04:15I had talked to Kirk Ferentz about Tristan Wirfs before that draft, and he just raved and raved and raved
04:21about him as a can't-miss prospect.
04:22So that was, you know, that was a miss, unfortunately, for them.
04:26But there are plenty of really good ones in this draft, and they will come away with one.
04:34What does, we're talking to Mary Kay Cabot right now, playing dealer at cleveland.com.
04:38What does Andrew Barry's history lead you to believe about, you know, the likelihood that they stay at six, that
04:47they stay at 24, that, you know, given this board, whether they would want to go best player available or
04:55go for needs.
04:56I mean, we've had now six of these drafts from Andrew Barry, and you've analyzed them as closely as anyone,
05:01Mary Kay.
05:03Well, he loves to wheel and deal, and he loves to maximize the pick, and if he can get out
05:09of the top ten, unless there's a quarterback or an edge rusher there that he really loves, I think that's
05:14what he seeks to do.
05:16So if he can maximize that number six asset and turn it into something for next year that might help
05:23them get a quarterback in the event that they need one, I think that he will try to do it.
05:27But once again, it has to be, the returns have to be good.
05:30The return on investment has to be really good.
05:32You've got to be getting at least a second-round pick.
05:35Maybe somehow, someway, you can get a first out of somebody, depending on how teams are viewing the top five
05:41or top six in this draft.
05:43So I do think that he will try to trade down.
05:45I think he's going for maximum impact, maximum sustainable impact at these higher spots.
05:53So I do think he'll try to trade down.
05:55And if he stays there, once again, I think he'll take probably the best.
06:01I would say he would probably go with the best tackle at that point.
06:04All right, so we've had all this time from your controversial remarks about, at least in some circles,
06:11when it came to taking another quarterback in this draft and Ty Simpson.
06:16As of today, 8.30 a.m. on draft day for the first round, do you have any kind of
06:23intel or any gut feeling on how Ty Simpson could factor into this weekend's draft?
06:33Well, I don't think that they would take him at number six.
06:37I really, I know they wouldn't take him at number six.
06:40As I had mentioned on your air a long time ago, that I would be interested in him there.
06:46But, of course, the wrath of social media came down upon me for that.
06:53And we'll see how it turns out in the end.
06:55But I think they would consider him at 24 or 39.
07:00I don't think he's going to get there.
07:02I think he probably will go somewhere in the first round, maybe to the Steelers at 21.
07:09So I just don't think he's going to end up here.
07:11I do, however, think that they will very strongly consider another one of the quarterbacks.
07:18And, you know, I don't know if that's Nussmeyer or Aller or even maybe a Talon Green.
07:25But I do think that they will probably end up with another quarterback.
07:29Mary Kay Cabot joining us here on the show.
07:31Are there any players?
07:33I know I've asked you this question a couple weeks ago.
07:34I've got to ask it again.
07:35Are there any players that are currently on the Browns that we should watch that could possibly go in a
07:40trade?
07:41I remember like last year, really over the last couple of years,
07:44it seemed like Greg Newsom was always rumored by somebody out there.
07:48Is there anybody who it's like, well, you've got to keep an eye on them,
07:51maybe circle them on the depth chart?
07:54Right now, no.
07:56Things can change, but I don't think they are going into the draft necessarily seeking to trade one of their
08:02bigger name players.
08:03Now, they could always trade, you know, a rotational player or something like that.
08:07But I don't think that they're going into it seeking to trade a Denzel or a Miles or all these
08:13people that have been rumored to possibly be traded.
08:16Again, crazy things happen when you're on the clock.
08:19Teams make offers that you can't refuse.
08:21They didn't really think that they were going to be making that Greg Newsom-Tyson Campbell trade until it was
08:28presented to them,
08:29and they were ecstatic about it.
08:31So anything can happen, but I don't think they are looking to do that.
08:36I don't think they are the ones making the calls trying to move those guys.
08:42When it comes to Todd Munkin, that throws a new wrinkle into this year's draft.
08:48Kevin, after six years, whatever chemistry they might have had when it came to the war room, we had heard
08:53over the years guys that he might have liked,
08:55guys that maybe he was not necessarily in lockstep.
08:59How do you think that will factor in with somebody with all the experience of Todd Munkin, but only his
09:05first year as head coach?
09:08Well, he'll have a say, but as I've been saying before, most of his input has already been taken into
09:16consideration.
09:17These are things that happen when you're setting up the draft board or when you're having your draft meetings.
09:22These aren't necessarily things that happen when you're on the clock.
09:27Those final calls will be Andrew Barry.
09:30So, you know, Todd's not going to step in there necessarily and break a tie.
09:34I mean, he will be involved, but this is Andrew Barry's Super Bowl right now.
09:40So, you know, he's told him what he needs at each position,
09:44and Andrew has a really good handle on what this coaching staff is looking for.
09:50But I don't necessarily think that, you know, Todd will be the one making any of these picks.
09:55What are they doing at 24?
09:59All depends, of course, on what happens with their first pick.
10:0324 is another spot where you can look for trade opportunities.
10:06That's also a spot where you could even look for trading for a veteran player if you see something out
10:13there that you really like.
10:14So tons and tons of options at number 24.
10:18If they end up going with Spencer Fano or a tackle with their first pick,
10:23then I really think you do look at taking a receiver at 24, not because you need one,
10:28but because your need and the strength of the draft line up there.
10:33So I think you can look at a Denzel Boston there, and you can look at maybe an Amari Cooper
10:40there or an Omar Cooper there,
10:43or maybe you look at a Casey Concepcion if you feel that, you know, all the intangibles are good there
10:51as well.
10:52So, so many different options at number 24 right now.
10:56Mary Kay, I happen to subscribe to the Peter Schrager thought that the five wide receivers can go first round,
11:04they might be gone by 24.
11:06That kind of led me to believe that maybe they would go Carnell Tate at number six.
11:10Maybe they do take Spencer Fano at number six.
11:12Could they possibly move up from 24 then to take one of those wide receivers?
11:19It's, it's possible.
11:21Anything's going to be possible with any of these picks,
11:24except for I really don't see them trading up from number six.
11:28Now, I suppose there is a world in which you only had to move up one spot or two spots
11:35or something like that,
11:36and you really have somebody there that you have to have.
11:39I don't see that happening, but I could see them possibly trading up from 24, trading back from 24,
11:47trading for a veteran with 24.
11:49They will be fluid and flexible going in, and they will look for opportunities.
11:53They will be opportunistic during this draft.
11:56And we know that about Andrew.
11:58That's one thing we absolutely know about him is that he loves to make deals,
12:02and he's going to be working those phones, and he's not just going to sit back and let the draft
12:08happen.
12:08He will be aggressive, and he will look for things to add to this football team in a big way.
12:14Mary Kay, after listening to Shador Sanders this week,
12:18have you decided to change your style of reportage?
12:22Are you now pivoting and going to be more positive and reflect the energy that we were seeing out of
12:31Shador and Todd Munkin?
12:35Absolutely, 100%.
12:36I needed to hear it, and I'm kidding.
12:41I was going to say, I didn't think you were negative.
12:47You know, it's funny because I just think that we are such a fair media in Cleveland.
12:53You guys know what media elsewhere can be like.
12:55Sometimes I want to just let these guys go spend a week in Philadelphia or maybe New York,
13:01and then they'll see what a really tough media is all about.
13:05I think we're very, very fair here in Cleveland,
13:08and I think we have been from day one with Shador,
13:12and I don't really even know exactly what he's talking about,
13:15but I don't think that, you know, I don't think we need to change how we're doing our jobs.
13:22I know C.J. Gardner-Johnson was going after Philadelphia media yesterday.
13:26They do have a, I know John, who's from, our new producer, who's from Philadelphia,
13:30is like, I can't believe you guys are so nice here.
13:32And we're going, what?
13:33He goes, oh, gosh, it's so nice here in Cleveland.
13:35I do think there is, I do think it might be a little jarring for a lot of guys.
13:39I mean, these guys come from really good programs, really successful programs,
13:44where it's never that, but usually it's not that bad,
13:47and then they come here and it's like, yeah, you've got to prove it,
13:50and there's a lot of history there that says you might not be able to.
13:53So that might be a little bit of a surprise to them.
13:56Mary Kay, I would love to ask you, the leader in the clubhouse, for quarterback right now,
14:01but it might be a little bit too early, is it?
14:05Yeah, it's too early.
14:06It's definitely too early.
14:08We have to let this thing play out.
14:10The key thing here is that Todd Munkin would like to have a really good handle
14:14on who his QB1 is coming out of these spring practices.
14:18So every single thing that they do is being scrutinized.
14:22And it's, you know, how they treat their teammates.
14:25It's media, what they do on the field, what they do in the classroom.
14:28So, you know, they really need to make sure that every single thing that they're doing
14:35says starting NFL quarterback, character, you name it.
14:39So we'll see how it goes.
14:41I thought that Deshaun looked a little bit more polished, a little bit better in the first practice.
14:47But when you're a three-time Pro Bowler and you have that type of athleticism,
14:52those guys just look different when they're out there practicing.
14:55They just do.
14:56The ball comes out a little differently.
14:58The footwork looks a little different.
15:00So on day one, I thought he kind of had the slight edge.
15:04But it's very, very early.
15:06All right, Mary Kay, I don't want to put you in a bad spot.
15:08But I have to ask, you know, I know it's a different team.
15:12But Mike Vrabel not going to be there on Saturday.
15:15How important is it that a head coach is there for every day of the draft?
15:22Well, I think the most important days, of course, are the first couple of days.
15:28And even on the third day of the draft, we don't really necessarily hear from Todd Munkin when it's all
15:37over.
15:37I can't remember if we always hear from the coach.
15:39Well, anyways, whatever they're doing over there, they're doing what they need to do for their organization.
15:47And he's doing what he needs to do for his family and for his personal life.
15:52So however they want to work through that, that's absolutely, of course, fine with me.
15:58Outstanding as always, Mary Kay.
15:59We thank you very much for the time.
16:01We'll talk to you again next week.
16:02All the very best to you and yours.
16:03And I'll talk to you tonight over in Berea.
16:05No, wait, you're probably in Pittsburgh.
16:06Which one are you, in Berea or Pittsburgh today?
16:09I am in Berea.
16:10All right.
16:12Well, well, we're going to look like the number 10 next to each other.
16:15Mary Kay, thank you so much.
16:18I'll see you later.
16:19Take care.
16:19Goodbye.
