00:00You were at the Chris Brown Usher concert last night
00:03as the opening act was a DJ who was wearing a Miles Garrett jersey.
00:07And you texted us, and immediately the first went,
00:09did he get it on clearance?
00:11Which John flew out of Cleveland, you know, a couple of weeks ago
00:14because he was going on a vacation with someone who wasn't his girlfriend,
00:17but apparently everybody's cool with that, so whatever.
00:19And he said that he saw a Miles Garrett jersey that was full price over there
00:23still at the airport.
00:25There's a reason I bring all this up.
00:26But Mike Rutenberg was asked on NFL Spotlight with Ari Myrov
00:32about Jared Verse, and here is a story about Jared Verse
00:36and how vocal Jared is.
00:38I wish all the fans could see my first FaceTime with him.
00:41All I wanted to do was just get around him and be with him
00:45because he was so genuinely excited.
00:47And then we're on the field, and I just hear,
00:49nah, that ain't the standard, that ain't the standard.
00:51I turn back, and it's Jared Verse.
00:53You could feel his energy, his passion.
00:55All you got to do is turn on any Rams game and see how good the guy is.
00:58I mean, that's easy to see.
00:59But to feel his energy and to already witness his leadership
01:02is going to be awesome for our defense,
01:04along with the other great people and players we have,
01:07not only in that room, but on our defense and our football team.
01:10The Browns have won eight games the last two years.
01:13They'll probably win another five, six this year.
01:17They're set up.
01:18Now, best plans obviously get thrown aside when it comes to the Browns,
01:22but go with me on this.
01:23They're set up for the best of yours to be in the future.
01:27I think we're poised for a situation where Miles Garrett may end up being
01:32the very best to ever play the game.
01:35But I go back to our Nick Chubb conversation.
01:37I go back to our Jose Ramirez conversation.
01:41Miles Garrett may be very well the best to ever do it.
01:44But if this team can get their bleep figured out, could Jared Verse be the one
01:50who's more beloved and well-liked here in Cleveland, Ohio?
01:54Because if Jared Verse is anywhere near, if he can get 10 sacks and he provides
02:00real leadership, he ends up being, and they traded Miles Garrett for him
02:07in other picks, but he's one of the main pieces, they're going to put him on every billboard
02:11in town.
02:12They're going to put him on the side of the stadium.
02:14They're going to put him on the side of the new stadium.
02:15Right?
02:17If he's that vocal, if he's that emotional, if it eventually leads to wins, I'm not sure
02:22how many it's going to lead to this year.
02:23We'll find out.
02:24But if it eventually leads to wins, over the next six, seven years, eight years,
02:29whatever it is, could Jared Verse end up being more well-liked, more beloved in the
02:36city of Cleveland than Miles Garrett?
02:39Because there was obviously going to be less stats.
02:42I can't put the stats next to each other.
02:44But there would be more wins, and possibly, again, if they can get some other parts of
02:48this roster figured out, more playoff appearances.
02:50You're not going to like my answer.
02:50That's fine.
02:51I'm asking.
02:51I think everything that we are doing right now is a total disservice to Verse.
02:59I think this is exactly where the Cavs went wrong.
03:02A disservice to him.
03:03A total disservice.
03:04I think this is exactly what went wrong when the Cavs, in the wake of LeBron being gone,
03:10Colin Sexton, Darius Garland, here it is.
03:13Look.
03:13Look how fun these guys are.
03:14Like, we're doing...
03:16You guys are going to love Verse.
03:17You're going to love him.
03:17Look at what a personality he is.
03:20Look at what a leader...
03:20You guys are throwing all this stuff to overcompensate for not having Myles Garrett.
03:26And, guys, he's going to be a fraction of the player, Myles Garrett.
03:29What's the difference?
03:30He's not going to be in the same universe as Myles Garrett.
03:33But if you guys keep throwing these expectations on him before he's ever played a game with the
03:39Browns, which you guys are trying to find the next Myles Garrett, you're going to be looking
03:43forever.
03:43And he's never going to measure up.
03:45He's never going to be close to Myles Garrett.
03:47It's a tremendous warning.
03:47It's a tremendous warning.
03:49All right?
03:51But I think you're wrong.
03:52You have said...
03:54You...
03:54I didn't realize I was going to get you to attack me like this.
03:58You were going, oh, here we go.
04:00Because I said...
04:01Their best days are supposed to be...
04:03I don't know if they are.
04:05Their best days are supposed to be ahead of them.
04:07They've won eight games the last two years.
04:10They're probably not going to win that many this year, but we'll find out.
04:13They've got to get other situations figured out.
04:16And you said what?
04:17Because I think a lot of people agree with you, and I even saw Owen not in his head.
04:20Go ahead.
04:21I said it was a disservice to verse because I'm so excited to have this kid.
04:27It seems like he might even be...
04:28The grown man.
04:29Yeah.
04:29More of a balanced...
04:31You know, a balanced defensive player than Myles.
04:34Like, this is...
04:34This is a guy that can stop the run.
04:36But he's also a fraction of the player.
04:39Like, Myles is an all-timer.
04:41This guy could be really good.
04:43He could be a perennial pro bowler.
04:46All pro even.
04:47Yeah.
04:47He's just not Myles Garrett.
04:48And I'm nervous that we're overcompensating losing Myles and we're already like,
04:53oh, he's a better leader than Myles.
04:55Oh, he can do this better than Myles.
04:56He can do this better than Myles.
04:57Then people are going to start expecting better than Myles.
05:00You made the context in comparison.
05:01Yeah, and he's never going to be better than Myles.
05:02See, this is the difference.
05:04He's not going to be better than Myles.
05:06But, hey, is Jose Ramirez better at his job than Myles Garrett is?
05:12No.
05:13It was Nick Chubb better at his job than Myles Garrett is.
05:16No.
05:17If you go on the street, who do Cleveland fans like more?
05:19And if you went on the street in April, who do Cleveland fans like more?
05:23Not now.
05:24Now it's fish in a barrel.
05:26This is the point.
05:27You're right.
05:28Because I think they're going to put Jared Versa on there.
05:30I'm asking for 10 sacks this year.
05:32That's what I'm asking for.
05:33Who knows?
05:34That's a great year.
05:34I don't know how great that defense is compared to ours.
05:37I know that our defense has been good in the past.
05:39But, hey, you got rid of Myles Garrett or you traded away Myles Garrett.
05:42I don't know what this defense is going to be.
05:43So, I'm kind of holding my breath on it.
05:45You got Mike Rutenberg there.
05:46Talks a good game.
05:47I don't know what this defense is going to be.
05:49So, I'm holding my breath.
05:50But, I'm pointing it out.
05:51They're going to put Jared Versa all over the place.
05:53You're right.
05:54Colin Sexton was on every billboard.
05:56This is the rebirth.
05:57This is the rethink.
05:58Colin Sexton was expected to be the focal point, though.
06:02Jared Versa is expected to be a great player for this football team.
06:06But, damn it, he's not expected to be the focal point.
06:10The focal point is either going to be in the quarterback room right now at number 12.
06:14I agree with you.
06:15Or, more than likely, he's going to be in college football this coming year.
06:18And, next year, he's going to be the focal point.
06:20That's the difference.
06:22That's why Myles Garrett was frustrated.
06:24That's why some of us were frustrated with Myles Garrett.
06:27Because he can't go out there and throw passes and catch him by himself.
06:31So, you have to have a quarterback on this team.
06:34So, we're going to go this next year.
06:36And, this is what I'm going to hate.
06:38Because, you're going to be right.
06:39You're going to be right about this.
06:40We will get calls.
06:42I can almost guarantee it.
06:45We will get the same calls Monday mornings after their losses.
06:48Because, they're probably going to lose double-digit games this year.
06:51We will get calls Monday mornings on where did Jared Verse go in the fourth quarter?
06:56What happened to Jared Verse?
06:57We made this trade.
06:59Andrew Barry's an idiot.
07:00He wanted Jared Verse.
07:01We got Jared Verse.
07:02Then, I saw him disappear.
07:03It's going to be the same damn thing.
07:05Because, we're frustrated.
07:06Because, we probably won't have a quarterback situation.
07:08That's very good.
07:09And, we're going to be left holding the bag on what we perceive as good players.
07:13Like, we've done with just about everybody else.
07:15I still get anti-Joe Thomas stuff.
07:17And, he's in the Hall of Fame.
07:19Quite literally.
07:19I still get anti-Josh Cribbs stuff.
07:22I still get it.
07:22Because, they don't play quarterback.
07:24So, to everybody else, they don't matter.
07:27And, that's going to be the problem.
07:28So, until you get that figured out.
07:30Yeah.
07:31But, if you do get it figured out.
07:33If Shador Sanders does take off.
07:35If they do end up drafting any of the guys that aren't named Ren and Sorsby next year.
07:42That would be a hell of a deal.
07:43If they draft any one of these guys.
07:45And, they end up finally solving this.
07:48Then, I think Jared Vers is set up to be more beloved than Myles Garrett ever was here.
07:52It is.
07:53Because, Jared Vers is going to be in every single promo.
07:56He's not going to ask for a trade either.
07:56He's going to be in every single promo.
07:58He's going to be standing up.
07:59Holding his arm up.
08:00Firing brimstone.
08:01Barking.
08:02Have everybody there.
08:03Barking it up.
08:04Doing exactly what everybody was begging Myles Garrett to do.
08:07That he would not do for nine years.
08:09And, then we will jump to the conclusion.
08:11As an emotional fan base.
08:13That he's better than Myles Garrett.
08:14Which, it's so funny.
08:15You can't say better.
08:16You said.
08:17We watched arguably the best to ever do it in his position.
08:20We were blessed.
08:20You can't say better.
08:21Guys, there's a damn difference between better and more beloved.
08:26And, I'll be willing to recognize that as time goes on.
08:28I just remember after LeBron, people going, this is more fun than LeBron.
08:32That was all the drama.
08:34This is more fun.
08:35They're winning 38 games, but this is more fun.
08:37It was a bit of a nice way to open up the collar a little bit.
08:41When they were sucking up the room, but he was still doing well.
08:44Now, obviously.
08:45Obviously.
08:46You know.
08:46I'll admit that.
08:47The Myles team's a lot more losing than winning.
08:50So, maybe Verse has a chance in the rebuild.
08:53If they do find the quarterback to get that.
08:55That's what I'm pointing out.
08:56It's so funny.
08:56You said.
08:5710 sacks.
08:5810 sacks.
08:58Myles Garrett had 10 sacks in a three-game stretch last year.
09:01That's how freakish that Myles Garrett character was when he played for the Browns.
09:06Like.
09:07I'd rather.
09:08It's just.
09:09It's so.
09:11Apparently.
09:12Obvious.
09:14And it's never.
09:15And what I've always hated.
09:16It is.
09:17We've all.
09:17Because we haven't had quarterbacks.
09:19We end up having an ill will towards other players.
09:23It's like.
09:24Whoa.
09:24Let's keep it to where it is.
09:25It's a football team.
09:26There's good players on every football team in the NFL.
09:29There's Hall of Fame level guys on every team in the NFL.
09:33But because their quarterback situation isn't good.
09:35It ends up being covered up.
09:37And people end up getting frustrated.
09:39Like.
09:39Again.
09:39I keep.
09:40I will still get tweets.
09:42And I will still even get texts from some people.
09:44What did Joe ever do?
09:45You guys sit there and kiss Joe's ass every time he comes on.
09:48What do you ever do?
09:48What do you ever do?
09:49What do you ever playoff games do you play in?
09:50Like what's that?
09:51He was blocking for a certified idiot.
09:54And then the other quarterbacks weren't even that good.
09:57No offense to Brian.
09:59Brian was a little bit better than the other ones.
10:00But you get what I'm saying here.
10:01So we end up blaming guys who we really shouldn't be blaming.
10:04And it's up to the Browns to make sure that we don't end up blaming Jared Verse.
10:09Because this year will probably be.
10:11I don't think people will do it on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
10:14But you know we're going to get the texts and the tweets and the stuff.
10:17Where's number eight?
10:18Where'd number eight go?
10:20I'm going to go Dylan Gabe.
10:21No.
10:22Verse.
10:23Verse.
10:23Verse.
10:25Verse.
10:25Verse.
10:26Verse.
10:28Do we do yay, boo?
10:31No.
10:32It's not the time yet.
10:32Jared Verse.
10:33Yay!
10:34Charles Garrett.
10:35Boo!
10:40Usher.
10:41Yay!
10:42Chris Brown.
10:43Boo!
10:47He's wearing a number four jersey.
10:49Boo!
10:50But it says Usher on the back.
10:51Yay!
10:52What a time.
10:54I'd like to thank Cam Justice very much for having that video go out there.
10:58Because Ken, as everybody's saying, it's a good thing he turned around.
11:02Good for Usher.
11:04I'm glad you had a good time there, too.
11:06Amazing.
11:07Those were the five minutes that Usher actually had a shirt on.
11:11Or Chris Brown, for that matter.
11:12Well, again, people always accuse me of wearing shirts in the pool.
11:17I don't wear a shirt in the pool.
11:18And the reason I don't wear a shirt in the pool is because it would just draw more attention.
11:24If you see somebody with their shirt on in the pool, your eyes automatically go to the person on with
11:29their shirt in the pool.
11:30So you're just drawing more attention to yourself.
11:32But if I'm just in there, yeah.
11:35You can't miss a whale in the pool.
11:37I get that.
11:38But you're not really looking for the whale in the pool.
11:41Once a guy's wearing a shirt in the pool, you're just...
11:44If they look like me anyway, maybe they care about their skin care.
11:48I understand that.
11:49But if they look like me, for the most part, they're trying to hide something there.
11:53But I will tell you, I immediately put on a shirt right afterwards.
11:56When I get out of the pool, I put on the shirt as quickly as possible.
11:59Because nobody wants to see that, including myself.
12:02But everybody wants to apparently see Usher without a shirt on.
12:05And Chris Brown and people who are in really good shape without a shirt on.
12:09And you know what?
12:09I'm sure they've worked hard.
12:11Congratulations on all their success for their physiques.
12:14Is that why Miles Garrett, you couldn't find very many press conferences with a shirt on?
12:17Because I told you the theory, and I'm telling you it was true.
12:20I wonder if it ever got back to him.
12:22When he wore a shirt in press conferences on Fridays before games, you knew that he was dealing with an
12:28injury.
12:29That's amazing.
12:29When he didn't wear a shirt because he was feeling comfortable about himself.
12:33And he was feeling confident.
12:34When he's nursing an injury, you go back and look.
12:37The times that he's wearing a shirt and them Friday press conferences, that guy was dealing with an injury.
12:41The Ken Carman classic right here.
12:43This is one of the best things you've ever brought to the radio.
12:47It's the same theory as shirt sleeves on offensive linemen.
12:49And there's a couple other things that I forget that I brought up.
12:51Miles Garrett, shirtless.
12:52That means he's a confident player.
12:54He's going to play well on Sunday.
12:56Damn straight.
12:57And Usher, shirtless for most of the concert, except when he's wearing a jersey of the city that he's in.
13:03He's a confident singer right there.
13:05What about when our third string quarterback wears a suit on game day all of a sudden?
13:10That was one of the best ever.
13:12That's how Owen knew that Donovan Peoples-Jones, Dorian Thompson Robinson was going to be playing that day.
13:17He was all over it.
13:17It was not a mystery.
13:20It was true, man.
13:21He showed up in like a t-shirt and jeans when he wasn't playing.
13:24And then all of a sudden he's playing and we're, oh, we're wearing our money now.
13:27Oh, all right.
13:28We have a Brooks brother in here.
13:30That's a good find.
13:31He'll get a cash advance on that.
13:32Well done on that.
13:33Well, wait a minute.
13:34Now you still make good money.
13:35You could afford a $2,000 suit if you're an NFL player.
13:38The Birmingham Omahas?
13:39Who's he playing for?
13:40But not now.
13:41He's not wearing a suit.
13:42I don't know.
13:42Well, you could still find.
13:44Men's Warehouse is still around.
13:45You could still find a decent suit.
13:47Is he on the Invaders?
13:47Who's he on?
13:48I like the Birmingham Omahas.
13:51They're very good.
13:52Wait, did you call them the Birmingham Omahas?
13:56There are too many leagues.
13:58I can't keep up with all the teams in the leagues.
14:00I don't even know what they're.
14:01Battle Hawks?
14:02No, that's St. Louis.
14:03Battle Axe.
14:04Battle Axe.
14:05The Saddle Bags.
14:06All right, speaking of Saddle Bags, Jason Lloyd going to join us coming up at 8.22.
14:10So, just to finish up on the verse thing, I do want to get to a call here on the
14:14Jared
14:14Verse conversation.
14:15I understand where you're going on it.
14:17I get it.
14:18I know I'm an excitable person, and I am guilty as charged of making too big a damn
14:23deal about a guy trying to replace and trying to put my heart into him if they're replacing
14:29Myles Garrett.
14:30The difference is, is I think this year, it's going to be a rough year, and I do think we'll
14:34get nasty calls on Mondays after certain losses where we will get questions of where's
14:39Jared Verse.
14:39You can mark that on the calendar.
14:41July 8th is when I said it, because there's going to be a Monday we lose, and we're going
14:45to get calls.
14:45Guarantee it.
14:46But I think over time, if this team is actually going to where they think they're going to
14:51go, which is sometimes just a wish, if they go where they think they're going to go here
14:56over the next handful of years, yes, I think Jared Verse can be more well-liked in the city
15:01of Cleveland than Myles Garrett.
15:04Jose Ramirez is more well-liked in the city of Cleveland than Myles.
15:07Nick Chubb was the same way.
15:10Myles Garrett, yeah, Myles was great.
15:12The difference is, is that I think Jared Verse can provide the leadership that we begged
15:17Myles Garrett to give.
15:18And he flirted with it every now and then, but it was never anywhere near any of the consistency
15:25that what you need in a football team.
15:26And honestly, I found myself in a really weird spot where, for a lot of us, it is teamwork,
15:36teamwork, teamwork.
15:36We were taught that in high school, and then we get done playing football after high school.
15:40Some of us go on to college, most of us don't.
15:42Guys who are listening to this, they played in high school and that was it.
15:45Or they even quit before that.
15:47And you are fed teamwork constantly, because you're high school kids.
15:50We need teamwork when you're high school kids.
15:52But I look at a guy like Myles Garrett, what can I say to a guy like Myles Garrett?
15:57I don't have to do that anymore.
15:58I don't have to jump through the hoops of having to balance insane talent, insane output,
16:05and not a bad guy.
16:07Yeah, speeding tickets, I understand.
16:09But it wasn't like he's a bad person to, I know, checking his messages during a meeting,
16:15not being a guy who gives a lot of rah-rah speeches or doesn't really want to give a rah
16:20-rah
16:20speech at all.
16:21A guy who seems to be more into himself and his own output than maybe with some of the
16:26team, which is some of the criticism there.
16:28And I had to go, what am I to say to the guy?
16:30The guy had 23 sacks last year.
16:31I can't say anything to the man.
16:34Now, I'm not going to get 23 sacks out of that position this year.
16:37I'm hoping to get 10, but if I get some leadership out of it and the quarterback position ends
16:42up being good, we're in a better spot.
16:45Like, the whole point of getting Jared Verse and to get that extra first-round pick is that
16:51Jared Verse plays in more Browns playoff games than Miles Garrett ever did.
16:56That's the whole point of this entire season coming up.
16:59It's not about this year.
17:00It's about the future.
17:01Which, by the way, is why I sat here over the last year and made a case on why it
17:07would
17:07make sense to trade Miles.
17:09So, I don't want to talk out of both sides of my mouth here.
17:13I know.
17:13I think you're warning against us putting too many eggs in the Jared Verse basket.
17:17I thought they crushed the trade.
17:18I did.
17:19I thought they absolutely...
17:20At first, you know, we were getting crazy.
17:22We were like, oh, three or four first-round picks.
17:24And then we finally understood, you know, the contract and how all that factors into it,
17:29his age and everything.
17:30But in the end, I do think they killed it.
17:34And I'm excited about Verse.
17:35I just get nervous about the way I can already see some Browns fans talking about it.
