00:00What did you think of the Tom Pellicero tidbit that there was an offer of three ones by the Bills?
00:07Well, I took it in a different direction than I think most people.
00:11You said you just didn't even care.
00:12Well, no, I said I like the Browns deal.
00:15I mean, I like what they ended up getting.
00:17Yeah.
00:17And Josh Allen, as long as he's on the Bills, I think those first-round picks are probably going to
00:23be very late for a long time
00:24because he seems like someone who's going to be able to play a while, and all he does is produce,
00:28especially in the regular seasons.
00:30So they're going to win a lot of games regardless of the defense, regardless of the running game,
00:33even though now it seems he has a running game.
00:36But I took it a different way.
00:37It got me thinking, should Andrew Barry have kind of really put this out there more to see what he
00:45could have gotten from other teams too?
00:47And I like Jared Verse.
00:49I'm just saying, were there other options?
00:50Well, that's a different way to look at it.
00:52Should he have shopped him?
00:53Because remember, the story from Andrew Barry was this wasn't something that was in the offing for a long period
00:58of time.
01:00It's like, just kind of came together quickly.
01:01And I'm like, I don't know if I want it to come together quickly.
01:03But I don't believe that because there was a story that was out there that they've been chasing down Miles
01:06Garrett since 2022.
01:07Well, yes, yes.
01:09So who am I to believe?
01:10No, Andrew had talked about that.
01:12He met this time, in this instance.
01:14With the same team that's been trying to get him for four years.
01:17Yeah, that he just thought this came together very quickly.
01:20And I'm like, I don't know that it needs a big deal like this needs to come together quickly.
01:23And I think they did fine, regardless of whether it was quickly or not quickly.
01:27I just think the one mistake that I think everybody came back and admitted when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka
01:34was that they didn't do an auction.
01:37They didn't leave it open to the rest of the league.
01:39They could have got so much more.
01:40I don't know if we could have gotten so much more for Miles.
01:44He's not a quarterback.
01:45He is a defensive player.
01:46But he's the best.
01:49I don't know what we could have gotten, but that's kind of the point.
01:51Let's see what we could have gotten.
01:52Now, see, this is why, you know, you have the benefit of time.
01:56At the first blush, I know what I was obsessed with when we were talking about trading Miles.
02:00Which I didn't want to try to talk about trading Miles.
02:02And it was very short-sighted because I was emotional over it.
02:06But I said if we were going to trade Miles, I was fixated on three ones.
02:09I wanted three ones.
02:10Because you're trading Miles to get the quarterback situation right.
02:13That's what the hell we're doing here.
02:14I'm going to trade away the best defensive player in the history of the team.
02:18One of the three best players in the history of the franchise overall.
02:21And what am I going to get in return?
02:22I'm going to get a bunch of hopes and dreams back.
02:24So, I wanted three ones.
02:25But when the Bills call, okay, well, the Bills expect to be a deep playoff team every year.
02:29Okay, the Rams expect the same thing.
02:31But I'm also getting a player that I know is going to be top quality back.
02:33It's a guessing game in the draft.
02:36So, when I say these things, I know how my first reaction would have been.
02:39I know it.
02:40Had I had known that there was a three first-round picks type of thing there,
02:45you know me, I know me, they know me.
02:48If made to make a snap decision, a lot of times in a snap decision, I'm going to make the
02:53wrong decision.
02:54I do think that it's a better deal.
02:56If these things are all true, it's a better deal with the Rams.
03:00Because you're getting Jared Verse back.
03:02You're getting a top-quality player.
03:05You're going to sign him to a contract.
03:06I have him for a long time.
03:08I have a defensive leader, a guy who can help change the culture, and eventually I have my quarterback.
03:13So, that's part of it as well.
03:14Right now, I could take three first-round picks.
03:18I could use two of them to possibly move up to try to go after that quarterback.
03:21But then I'm still left with what on defense?
03:24I mean, I have a big gaping hole.
03:25And then going into this year, imagine you didn't have Jared Verse,
03:28and then you really didn't have Alex Smith Wright because of the injury.
03:31I mean, what do we have at defensive end?
03:33And they are trying to win some, and they're trying to be competitive.
03:38I understand that we're in this weird purgatory right now of what do we really want to do?
03:43Do we want to be a competitive football team, or do we want to try to go for the gusto
03:46and go for the quarterback?
03:47And you could say if you want to really go after the quarterback, you should have taken the three ones.
03:51But if they're going to be deep ones, and I know that that player's not going to be Jared Verse,
03:54or I believe that player might not be Jared Verse, I'd rather just have Jared Verse.
03:57He's going into year three.
03:59It's not like we're trading for a 35-year-old pass rusher here.
04:01So the deal that's better is still the Rams deal.
04:04When you bring up like kind of auctioning off a player, I think that that could have got really messy.
04:09And I think they should have kept it quiet.
04:11And this is what I did say back then, is that you probably should keep it quiet,
04:14because do I want it out there that Miles, who has no trade clause in his contract, correct?
04:20He did have that?
04:22I'm not mistaken.
04:23Yes, he had control.
04:25Okay, we've put together this deal with the Bears.
04:28Miles, I want to go to Chicago.
04:30Great.
04:31So now I have this contract that's nixed.
04:34Now they know that I'm wanting to move on from Miles Garrett.
04:37And now I have to possibly go to OTAs and go to all these things where Miles is going to
04:42have to answer questions.
04:43Or I'm going to have to answer questions about Miles.
04:45I still think it was probably better for the franchise.
04:47This is a good deal, and it was probably better for the franchise to rip the bandaid.
04:50Yeah, I don't think it needed to get messy.
04:52I think you just asked him.
04:53But it could have been.
04:53I mean, he obviously didn't want to be here.
04:55So that's the first thing.
04:56So you're giving him a get-out-of-jail-free card, and you get to go to a competitor.
04:59And so, you know, the Bills, good team.
05:02Rams, good team.
05:03Bears, I mean, come on.
05:04They were just in the NFC Championship game.
05:05They certainly are not.
05:06Bad teams aren't trading for them.
05:07You know that.
05:07I think you can have conversations.
05:09You can be an adult and have conversations.
05:11And know that, yeah, we are turning the page here.
05:13We're not keeping Miles Garrett.
05:15But the fewer people that know, the less chance it is to actually get out there.
05:18I just think once you initiate those conversations, you're giving every team a deadline and then going.
05:23I understand that.
05:24We got to hurry.
05:25Like guys in the station, and especially Padone, they started getting notifications like Wednesday before it was actually going down,
05:32going into the weekend.
05:33Like, hey, the Rams are sniffing around.
05:35This could actually be a possibility.
05:37You started getting that.
05:38But you only heard about one team.
05:41And it was still quiet until it actually happened.
05:43If you get more teams involved, there's a tendency to get messy.
05:47And then I have this player that might decide he doesn't want to go to some city.
05:51He wants to go to L.A.
05:53He always has wanted to go to L.A. in some form or fashion, has wanted to be in L
05:57.A. if he wasn't going to be competitive here in Cleveland.
05:59So we made this work, and we got a good deal out of it.
06:02I think the less time we spend, as long as Jared Verse plays well.
06:06Now, if Jared Verse isn't good, then all of a sudden we have to deal with all the, what could
06:09have been.
06:10But if Jared Verse plays well, I think the less time wondering about what it could have been for these
06:14fictitious trades, probably the better for everybody's psyche.
06:18What I love about Sean McVay, and I do mean this, I think some people hate him.
06:24I don't know why.
06:25Do people hate him?
06:26He has.
06:27It seems to be.
06:27Somebody did a poll on he's one of the most unpopular coaches in the NFL.
06:31Wow.
06:32I don't know why.
06:33Maybe it's because we.
06:34Maybe just NFC fans.
06:35It might just be because we in the media make such a big deal because he seems like a savant,
06:38and he remembers every play he's ever called and all that.
06:40Yeah.
06:41But you get tired.
06:42Like, it's not Travis Kelsey.
06:44It's that the news stories I always have to keep bringing up when he buys a house or farts in
06:50church or whatever.
06:51I have to keep talking about it.
06:52So because you have to keep doing it, it annoys him.
06:55That's why people get mad at us for having to talk about Browns quarterbacks incessantly.
07:00But what he does, what Sean McVay does, is gets, somehow gets the leadership that we all crave we had
07:08in our football teams.
07:10Gets the buy-in that we all crave we have in our football teams.
07:13And he's able to do it, and I don't know if any other team can.
07:16They don't play in the preseason.
07:18And you know it's a copycat league.
07:20So they didn't play in the preseason, and they're successful.
07:23We're not going to play our starters in the preseason.
07:25All these guys are going to do is get hurt and get us fired.
07:28We're not going to play these guys in the preseason.
07:30And then what do we hear at the end of the year?
07:31Well, that preseason where it was Camp Cupcake, they set the tone.
07:34And that's not just in Cleveland.
07:35That's everywhere.
07:36It is the storyline, yes.
07:37Well, we're going to hire this 30-year-old coach, and he's going to be great.
07:42We're going to hire a guy off his tree, and he's going to be great.
07:45No, Zach Taylor isn't that great.
07:46And there's been some young coaches out there who have fallen by the wayside here over these last couple of
07:51years.
07:51So he does it in a different way.
07:53They go out.
07:54They make a very bold trade.
07:56They've got 11 captains on their football team.
07:59So it doesn't surprise me that a team is able to do things that other teams aren't, which is not
08:06play in the preseason, not do certain things, show up a day before a game in Australia that's being played
08:13in the morning in Australia, and somehow they're just able to get away with it.
08:16It never seems to bite them in the ass.
08:19They trade away all the picks.
08:21It doesn't matter.
08:22It never comes back to bite them.
08:23They would have won the Super Bowl last year.
08:25And they are the team that I'm telling you, if you are taking cues from them, I think you're signing
08:31your own pink slip.
08:34Because it's just a totally different atmosphere there than it is everywhere else.
08:39Miles Garrett, big leader.
08:40Maybe he all of a sudden did become a big leader.
08:42Wouldn't surprise me that they were to brainwash him into being a George Patton type of figure for the L
08:47.A. Rams.
08:48It would be amazing.
08:49And it wouldn't surprise me.
08:51But you're going to be watching Miles tonight.
08:52You said you're actually surprised he's going to be there.
08:54Yeah.
08:54Well, just because he's barely practiced.
08:56Aaron Donald ain't going to be there.
08:57Yeah.
08:57Aaron Donald didn't make the trip.
08:59And look, I do think the storyline is going to be obnoxious tonight.
09:02They better be careful, Netflix, because if that's all they talk about, then it's going to undercut the actual football
09:12of one really good team.
09:14And another team, the 49ers, they've just gotten old.
09:18And I'm a big believer in Shanahan.
09:20But this team is old.
09:21And the Brock Purdy conversation is going to be interesting this week.
09:24I wonder how much Miles Garrett we're going to hear.
09:27Because to me, if you know Aaron Donald's not going to be there and Miles is going to be looking
09:32to get sacks, we've seen offensive coordinators play Miles right out of a game.
09:38Unless the Rams have a lead down the stretch and then it's going to be the Miles that everyone's terrified
09:44to see.
09:44We've got to jump back into this football game.
09:48I totally forgot.
09:49I've got to tell you, I totally forgot that he's going to be playing for the Rams.
09:52I did because I'm so Browns focused about, and honestly, I'm focused about trying to win an argument and tell
09:57people that I think the Browns are going to win on Sunday against Jacksonville, which I do firmly believe they
10:01will.
10:01I'm picking them to win.
10:03I totally forgot he's going to be there.
10:05It will be a little bit surreal to see them, to see him in that uniform today, tonight, even though
10:10it'll be in the morning there.
10:11Something tells me he'll look bigger just because.
10:14Because he's on a, he's in a uniform.
10:16Because he's on a team that's known for success here.
10:18More intimidating.
10:18We used to say that all the time about the Steelers.
10:21Just because you wear a Steelers jersey, automatically people think you're better than what you really are.
10:25And I don't think that anymore, by the way.
10:26That has eroded over time, even though they still win enough games every year to compete for the playoffs.
10:32But I don't, the mystique has gone there.
10:34With the Rams, it's totally different.
10:36You could put all sorts of bad players in those jerseys.
10:39I'm just used to them winning now.
10:402-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
10:43I want to remind John of something coming up here momentarily.
10:46However, Josh Hines-Allen, this is audio courtesy.
10:50What station is it again, by the way, that's down there?
10:53Keith just sent us the audio courtesy.
10:55I think it was a press conference, but I still want to get it right anyway.
10:58The station that was sent down there.
11:0110-10-XL, 92-5.
11:03That's their flagship down there in Jacksonville.
11:05Here is Josh Hines-Allen on stopping the run against the Cleveland Browns.
11:10The last time you went against an offense led by Todd Munkin, it was 2023 against Baltimore.
11:15They had over 250 yards on the ground.
11:17Are you expecting that play style to translate over to Cleveland as well?
11:21It's not going to happen.
11:22Our motto is to stop the run.
11:24So by any means, they're not running the ball that much on us.
11:26I expect coming out and running the ball, I think his philosophy of how he sees the game,
11:31yes, I expect that.
11:32But 230 yards, that's not happening.
11:34So, respectfully.
11:37I'm going to ask you a really stupid question on purpose.
11:39Does anybody in this room or anybody listening or anybody on hold right now
11:42thinks Deshaun Watson can throw the team on his back and go win the game?
11:45Right, right.
11:46I mean, that's...
11:46Is there anybody who thinks that he can do that?
11:48No.
11:48Okay, so...
11:49Not right now.
11:49Until we see it.
11:50Not right now.
11:51If what Josh Hines-Allen says is true, which is a team that was number one against the Rush,
11:55I think, last year.
11:59Oh, boy.
11:59I'm going to sound like a real big idiot on Monday.
12:01Oh, give me nitty-gritty right now.
12:02What does that mean if they are coming in gearing up to stop the run
12:05and that's all they are focused on because they don't think Watson can beat them?
12:10What are the wrinkles?
12:11What are the things the Browns can actually do?
12:13We'll break down some football.
12:14You want some football broken down?
12:16Let's get to it.
12:16You can ask Coach Lance about this.
12:18It's the same reason why Dylan Sampson looked better when he first started becoming the featureback
12:23after Quen'Shawn Junkins got hurt.
12:25Early on, yes.
12:25Because they were like, hey, number 10's the threat.
12:28We need to circle number 10.
12:30We eliminate number 10.
12:32We don't respect the pass.
12:34If they circle number 10 again, Quen'Shawn Junkins is still number 10.
12:38If they circle number 10 again and they stop the run,
12:41do you believe that Deshaun Watson can put it on him to keep him honest?
12:45Now, you have better wide receivers.
12:47But we don't think he can throw.
12:48We don't think he can sit in a pocket.
12:50Exactly.
12:50Feel a pocket.
12:51Know when he needs to get rid of the football
12:52and then deliver an accurate strike down the field that gives his wide receiver a chance.
12:57Haven't seen a lot of evidence of that.
12:58I have an offensive line because my whole thing with an offensive line that hasn't played together much
13:02is like you run the football because it's easier to go forwards than it is to go backwards.
13:06So I run the foot.
13:07Unless I have Mahomes behind him, I'm running the ball.
13:10Does the RPO stuff at all give them a chance?
13:15I know Zach did not think that he has the requisite athleticism anymore or the mobility.
13:20But I did see once, I saw him take off.
13:23I did see him take off maybe a few times in the preseason where I'm like, all right, it's still
13:29not.
13:29It's going to have to because if he proves that he's any threat whatsoever,
13:32then it's something I have to bracket during the game and unlock during the game.
13:37And I'm sure they have spent some time going, well, he can still be an athlete.
13:41How much of an athlete?
13:42I just wouldn't bet against a team that I'm playing and take it lightly that, oh, yeah, this guy sucks
13:47now.
13:47He can't run all of a sudden.
13:49He may not be able to run, but I'm going to have him prove that to me
13:52instead of me just assuming if I'm running the defense of the Jaguars.
