00:00You're going to remember this name, one of the great Ohio State wide receivers,
00:04De'Veer Posey, former OSU wide receiver, former NFL wide receiver.
00:08Joining us now, De'Veer, welcome to the show.
00:11Hey, welcome. Hey, guys, how you doing? Thanks for having me on, and I appreciate that.
00:15Well, we're very happy to have you here.
00:18One of the reasons we wanted to have you is your expertise as a wide receiver.
00:21There's been a lot of debate about Carnell Tate from Ohio State here on this very show.
00:27When you watch Carnell kind of play the last year or so,
00:31does he remind you of anybody from the NFL or even from OSU past?
00:36Yeah, I think Carnell's smooth style, man.
00:39He's a route runner first, and he's a hands catcher.
00:42He doesn't catch balls with his body.
00:45And I think, you know, his combine speed really kind of scared a lot of teams.
00:50Obviously, it was a topic of conversation for that week.
00:53But when you cut on the film, his catching the ball with his hands is a point of separation, right?
01:02The best body catcher of all time to me was Antonio Brown.
01:07And the reason why is because he was still able to catch balls with his body
01:11but still have yards after catch.
01:14Carnell Tate doesn't have that problem where he's catching the balls getting into his body.
01:17He's catching them with his hands and he's still able to get yacked.
01:20And then on top of that, down the field, which makes him a good deep ball threat,
01:25he's not going to run past you with Terry McLaurin or Paris Campbell's speed,
01:29but he can go in high-pointed because he has huge hands and he's a hands catcher.
01:35So, I look at him, I was going to say I look at him as like in the Brandon,
01:39you guys remember a guy named Brandon Lloyd?
01:42Oh, yeah.
01:42Super smooth, ultra great, you know, just great pass catcher, great third down threat.
01:47And then also he can do stuff vertically because he can catch balls with his hands.
01:50So, he's more like the Brandon Lloyd category to me.
01:54I find it fascinating you focus on the hands because he was 98th percentile in hand size,
01:58one drop all of last season.
02:00Like, it's a real feature of his game that I feel like when people talk about him,
02:04they just, I guess, they highlight it,
02:07but we're so focused on some of the other things that it just gets lost.
02:11Yeah, absolutely.
02:13And I mean, wide receiver, literally, you're paid to catch football.
02:18You know, I don't really, I mean, definitely I want you fast, I want you serviceable,
02:22but 4-5 is great game speed.
02:25If he can play at 4-5 in the fourth quarter with his hands,
02:30I'll take him every day over a 4-3 guy that's only 4-3 in the first half.
02:34So, it's interesting.
02:36I think Emeka Abuka a year ago maybe got knocked a little bit from this as well.
02:42Certainly, guys that played across from Marvin Harrison Jr.
02:46kind of got this knock as well.
02:48It's kind of repeated that it's hard to really tell how great Carnell can be
02:52because you got Jeremiah Smith playing across from him.
02:56How does that, like, when you're watching wide receivers,
02:58does that complicate kind of your assessment of them?
03:01Because you've got this other guy that is very clearly, you know,
03:04maybe outside of Marvin Harrison, the best wide receiver prospect in the last decade.
03:10Yeah, yeah, I mean, obviously a lot of the offense goes through Jeremiah
03:14and then one would say, hey, well, Carnell was open because they were doubling Jeremiah.
03:18Nah, that's not the case.
03:20I mean, you go back to that Wisconsin play, that was double coverage.
03:23It was a great ball by Julian,
03:25but just going able to high point that for that touchdown up in Madison,
03:29that play in my mind gives me all of the confidence that this guy isn't a decoy type of wide
03:35receiver.
03:36However, he's not, you know what I mean, a number two.
03:40Let's see with a full sample size, with a full serving size, just like with Emeka, what he can do.
03:46And I was so impressed with Emeka the first half of the season
03:49and then also just being able to see him with the spotlight on him
03:52and not in the shadow of Marvin Harrison.
03:54I think the same goes for Carnell, right?
03:56Like how well he'll do not being in the shadow of a mini Megatron.
04:01I think he'll shine bright.
04:03All right, let me ask you this then, with just Ohio State players,
04:06Browns obviously picking at six overall in this draft.
04:09How many Ohio State players would you take at six overall if they're available?
04:13We'll just put everyone on the board and then you can tell me which ones are your favorites.
04:17Man, I just don't see the Browns taking Ohio State player at six.
04:22I think just because of the season that Swisher had at linebacker and putting that money there.
04:29You know, if Arvell is maybe sitting there as an edge rusher, I could see maybe Arvell.
04:37But, you know, Caleb McDonald, I don't know if he goes that high, you know, at the D-line position.
04:43Three technique.
04:44And then also, Sonny Stiles, I just can't see them taking a mic, you know, right there at that spot.
04:50So, for the Browns, if I would say he was an Ohio State player, I would probably go with maybe
04:55a potential edge rusher at Arvell.
04:57Reset number six would probably be, if I was putting a parlay in for top ten, I would have him
05:02slotted there to Cleveland.
05:03All right, DeVere, this has been a talking point for Cleveland as long as Andrew Berry's been the GM here.
05:11Because they have not sent a lot of their heavy hitters, such as Jimmy Haslam, Andrew Berry, previously Kevin Stefanski,
05:18now Todd Munkin, to Ohio State's Pro Day.
05:21I don't think it's the biggest deal in the world.
05:24And yet, it's Ohio State.
05:26They're basically in your backyard here.
05:30What should we read into Andrew Berry and Todd Munkin not being at the Ohio State Pro Day and not
05:35consistently going to, you know, the best football program in America multiple years in a row?
05:42Yeah, I don't know, man.
05:44I remember since I came out, you know, Mike Tomlin and Steelers always being there, they made it a point
05:50to be there at Ohio State Pro Days.
05:52And I feel like the Steelers, over the last 12, 10 years, have been able to get value from Ohio
05:57State, even in the later rounds.
05:59And so they've done their homework and they came in town.
06:03I don't read really too much into, you know, the GMs and who shows up.
06:08I'm more like a rule of two guys, you know what I'm saying?
06:12And rule of two, just like with any house, each president gets two GMs, each GM gets two head coaches,
06:19each head coach gets two quarterbacks, whether it's drafted or one in pre-agency.
06:26And so I really feel like GMs kind of move off of like, hey, like my job's on the line,
06:33my necessity, I got to have this position for like my rule of two or I got to be here.
06:38And I just don't think this is like one of those years to where a GM possibly should be there.
06:44I don't think we're going to, you know, Julian Sands not coming out this year.
06:47You know, a top 10 pick for Carnell is kind of out of, you know, kind of out of my,
06:52you know, universe.
06:54And then also, you know, Sonny and Katie McDonald, those guys, I mean, you saw what you needed to see
07:00at the combine from those guys.
07:01So I don't really think a trip really was warranted for the Browns or really read too much into it
07:08just because it's not one of those years where, you know, you're drafting a quarterback and they actually need to
07:11be there and visually see it.
07:13So they've done their homework, I'm pretty sure, on these guys.
07:17And the best part about this group of prospects, man, like three dudes.
07:23Like Carnell never been in trouble.
07:25Caleb Downs, like you want that guy in your locker room.
07:29You know, Arvel Reese is just a head down, raised by a Marine.
07:33You know, Katie McDonald, head down, worked hard, you know, stood behind a lot of people and got his job
07:37done as a team leader.
07:39I just think, you know, a lot of that coming in time is doing a research and trying to figure
07:44out, hey, can I talk to this janitor?
07:46All right, let me talk to the last person that's in the facility.
07:48How does this guy treat this guy?
07:50And they probably already got their homework done.
07:53So I really wouldn't read too much into it or think Andrew Barry isn't doing his job.
07:57As far as scouting Ohio State players, I just don't see an Ohio State player landing at six.
08:03But I could be totally wrong.
08:05Do you have any other favorite wide receivers that we're talking about within the draft?
08:08Like Makai Lemon, Jordan Tyson, maybe Omar Cooper Jr., who won a title at Indiana, obviously.
08:13Denzel Boston, any of these other guys that maybe just kind of flashed for you and stuck out?
08:18Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Obviously, Jordan Tyson is in that Teddero McMillan category for me.
08:25I just think, you know, Pac-10, that West-Southern type of wide receiver has done well in the league,
08:34right?
08:35You go all the way back to Brandon Ayuk and Teddero McMillan and these guys and just coming from that
08:41league and just his relationship with Levitt.
08:43I really like Tyson.
08:44I think a lot of people are wrong about Makai Lemon.
08:48He's in that Heinz Ward, Amaro, St. Brown category for me.
08:54He is just a playmaker.
08:56He's under six foot, but those Steve Smith kind of guys, you know, he won the Belindicoff for a reason.
09:03All due respect to Jeremiah, but he won the Belindicoff for a reason.
09:07I don't really care how he interviewed.
09:09The guy can play.
09:10And then Denzel Boston, just square shoulders, square routes, great high points, super strong.
09:18And I think he's had production on some corners in this year's draft in one-on-one settings.
09:25And then also even when he went against Travis Hunter, you know, it's just this guy can just get open
09:30and make plays.
09:31I do like those three guys outside of Carnell.
09:35And obviously, Omar Cooper, man, just the year he's had.
09:38Wow.
09:39He's going to surprise some people.
09:40He could slip.
09:41He could slip in the first round.
09:43I wouldn't be surprised.
09:44Daveer Posey, former Ohio State wide receiver on the make it right call, Kyle Wright hotline.
09:50I'm interested in kind of your take on Jeremiah Smith.
09:53And, you know, I feel like next year is being billed as this all-time year with maybe, you know,
09:59people have said there's eight guys that could be first-round quarterbacks next year.
10:03And I come back, does that mean that we could see Jeremiah Smith not go in the top five?
10:09What is your read on Jeremiah as a prospect and whether – do you think he'll be a top three,
10:15top five pick next year?
10:17Yeah.
10:18I mean, you know, Jeremiah woke up, you know, in the beginning of August and said,
10:21hey, you know, I'm going to do what Jamar Chase did his last year and sit down.
10:25Now, Jamar Chase is lucky because that was COVID.
10:27And so he had to sit down.
10:29And he really didn't want to come back, you know, in 2021.
10:32And he sat out and he still went where he went in the draft.
10:37Jeremiah's put enough film on tape to be a top ten pick, but that's not who he is.
10:43He loves to play football and he loves to compete.
10:47I mean, you just go watch this guy practice.
10:49I mean, I don't know if you guys heard the stories about Randy Moss and the stuff he did
10:54in practice was crazier than the stuff that we see on game film.
10:57But this dude practiced so hard, so I know he loves football.
11:02And he wants to get better.
11:03And you look at where Marvin Harrison was his last year, Marvin Harrison, Jr.
11:08He was able to line up at number three in the slot, run jerk routes on Mike linebackers,
11:13run, you know, post stems and post corners from one and two.
11:18And in the beginning of the draft, he could be an X short side in the boundary.
11:22For Jeremiah to be able to be displaced and moved around and just put in matchups to where
11:28what the NFL normally does with the number one receiver we saw with JSM.
11:31JSM would line up at three, might be at four, but they're looking for matchups and exploiting
11:36matchups and weaknesses in the defense.
11:38I think that's the last step for Jeremiah.
11:41I'm not saying that, you know, he isn't already great, but the last step is being able to be
11:47placed at any point in the offense to get that mismatch.
11:51And I just believe that's what we'll see this year.
11:54We'll see him take that leap and knowing the playbook and him and Julian having that chemistry.
11:59And so there is a little room for improvement.
12:01As good as he is, national champion, All-American, Belenikoff, finalist, you know, two years in
12:06a row, you say, how can this guy get better?
12:09And it's right there.
12:10And he knows that.
12:13And he's working on that.
12:14And Ryan Day and Arthur Smith will make sure that going into the NFL, you know, he'll have
12:19that trait to his game, being able to be lined up and exploit one-on-one matchups.
12:23So I'm looking forward to seeing that this year and just him being an older player and
12:29where, you know, he was physically better than a lot of guys as a freshman.
12:32But when that mind and that physicality matchup, you know, that's when you start really, you
12:38know, football starts to become even easier for him than it already is.
12:42Do you agree with the sentiment that Julian Sane is a higher rated, better NFL prospect
12:47as of right now than even Arch Manning and Dante Morris?
12:53Yeah, I do.
12:54I really do.
12:55I think we're really lucky to have Julian Sane just because I think he's in the savant category.
13:02Just a natural thrower.
13:03He's not physically, you know, crazy on the eyes.
13:08You know, he'll pass the height test.
13:10He's taller than you think he is.
13:12He's about 6'2", 6'3".
13:14But the throwing motion, guys, I went to the Minnesota game and I was sitting in the closed
13:20end of the shoe.
13:22And Carnell had a, he had an early deep ball.
13:25And I'm talking, it was down set hut.
13:28And the thing came out.
13:29The ball just came out.
13:30I just, I saw the ball first and I was like, where is he going?
13:33Oh my God.
13:34And then Carnell Tate just runs under it and it sounded like butter.
13:37It was just so soft.
13:39And it's like, wow, that time and that accuracy and just ball placement as a young guy.
13:48He hasn't even really entered, you know, beast mode yet.
13:52Like, guys, he doesn't even celebrate, you know?
13:56So he's not even at that comfortable place yet.
13:59I would take Julian Sane every day over those guys, right?
14:02He already has the skills and traits to be a pro quarterback.
14:06And to me, he's a mix of Drew Brees and Baker Mayfield a little bit, just right in that category.
14:11So I definitely think he's a great pro prospect.
14:14DeVere, great stuff.
14:15We appreciate you.
14:16And it'll be interesting to see whether any of these great Ohio State prospects we saw
14:20down in Columbus today end up with the Browns.
14:22But if one of them do, we'll be sure to call you back, bud.
14:26Well, the way it's trending, you guys might take somebody.
14:30You guys are going to take somebody.
14:33So I'm excited to see and super excited for the Browns this year and to see the results
14:39and the quarterback situation for sure.
14:42Excellent stuff, buddy.
14:42Thank you so much.
14:44No problem.
14:45You have a good one.
14:46DeVere Posey there, former Ohio State wide receiver on the Make It Right call.
14:49Kyle Wright hotline.
