00:00Previously on Project Runway Junior.
00:03This is the Seventeen Magazine Challenge.
00:05We're going to be hitting the streets
00:08to look for inspiration for this challenge.
00:10Let's do this.
00:16You feminized cargo pants.
00:19I love the idea of seeing this in editorial.
00:21I'm having a hard time looking at it.
00:22Maya, Samantha, you are both winners of this challenge.
00:26Oh my god.
00:28Zach, I'm sorry, you're out.
00:31Jackson, you're also out.
00:48Yeah, shake.
00:51Hello, designer.
00:53Hello.
00:54This is your final challenge to determine
00:56who will be moving forward to the first ever
01:00Project Runway Junior finale.
01:02I can't believe that I made it to the top four.
01:05I never believed that I could really do this.
01:07And to be so close to the finale
01:10is absolutely mind-blowing.
01:13The finalists will be showing at New York Fashion Week.
01:16Oh my gosh.
01:17I want to get to the finale so bad, especially the fact that we can show it during Fashion Week.
01:23I just really want to show the judges more of who I am designer.
01:28It would be amazing to show at New York Fashion Week.
01:32And it's insane to think that that is just one step away for me.
01:38We have a very special guest today.
01:41Who is this?
01:44I've seen that dress before.
01:45I totally remember this dress.
01:47I saw it all on the internet.
01:48And it took, like, worldwide notice.
01:51Please welcome 18-year-old sensation, Kaima McIntyre.
01:55Hi.
01:56Kaima gained worldwide notoriety when her homemade and self-designed prom dress catapulted her
02:03into viral internet stardom.
02:05And she's wearing that famous dress today.
02:07Wow.
02:08So cool.
02:09The first time that I saw this dress online,
02:11I thought that it was a designer piece.
02:13And then when I heard that she made it, I'm like, that's so creative and beautiful.
02:17Designers, I really had a vision to just make a personal statement with this look.
02:21I chose this Angelina print from Ghana because it was a perfect fit for my distinctly African-inspired look.
02:27I went in my statement to say that I am confident and proud of who I am and where I come from.
02:31The print is beautiful.
02:32It complements her body magnificently.
02:35Like, I was just in awe when I saw how beautiful she is.
02:38So, designers, for your next challenge, we want you to be your own muse.
02:43You are free to create whatever it is that will represent your views,
02:47your personal journey, or a specific statement that you want to make.
02:51As a designer, I only use myself as a muse as well as menswear.
02:56So, I'm definitely already feeling comfortable for this next challenge.
02:59Good luck, designers.
03:00Make sure you show the world who you are and what you're about.
03:03Designers, head up to the workroom and I'll see you here back on the runway.
03:08Feels so great that I'm in the top four.
03:12I just kind of have to bring my game so we don't go home on this one.
03:16Where's my station?
03:18Hi.
03:18Hi.
03:19Good morning.
03:20I want you to join me in welcoming Scott Pollard, the marketing director of Rowenta.
03:25Welcome, Scott.
03:25Hi, everyone.
03:26Rowenta irons are the ultimate combination of design and innovation.
03:30They have unparalleled ease of use and technology,
03:32providing high-quality results for your garments every time.
03:35And designers for this challenge, Rowenta irons are going to do even more for you,
03:40because you will be adding an extra element of design and innovation to your look.
03:48Beside us, we have a huge arrangement of iron-on transfer materials.
03:53When these iron-on transfer materials are applied to fabric,
03:57it allows you to create a custom textile.
04:00You can do anything you want when creating your own textile,
04:03so it's definitely time to get extra creative.
04:05You will have 30 minutes to sketch, then we are heading off to Mood,
04:10where you will have a budget of $400.
04:12Oh, my gosh.
04:14Oh, wow.
04:16But you only have one day for this challenge.
04:19Oh.
04:20Scott, thank you so much.
04:21Thank you so much.
04:22Tim, good luck, designers.
04:24Sketch away.
04:25In middle school, I didn't have many friends.
04:31I was just super shy.
04:32I felt like I didn't really fit in.
04:34And I started expressing myself through my clothes.
04:36That's when I started having more confidence.
04:40So the dress is going to have a really bright print on the outside,
04:43represent who I am, like my personality today.
04:45And then a lining that is like a very solid print to represent my shy, awkward self.
04:50My family have always told me, go ahead, do it, be a leader,
04:55and show them something they've never seen before.
04:58My personal statement is the idea of what it is to be a leader and not a follower.
05:03The judges want to see a dress for me, so I'm definitely sketching a dress
05:06and just a really nice long coat that can complement it.
05:10My inspiration for this garment is how strong and powerful you can be at any age.
05:16And I'm doing this boning detail in this jacket because it represents a rib cage.
05:23It protects your lungs and your heart.
05:26Everybody always, since day one, has called me like an old soul.
05:29And so I want to do something that's mature and elegant and a big ball gown evening dress.
05:35All right, designers, is everyone ready to head off to mood?
05:38Yes.
05:38All right, great.
05:39Off we go.
05:40Do you feel confident about what you're going to do?
05:47Yeah.
05:48All right, then your 30 minutes to shop starts right now.
05:51Oh, okay.
05:54I'm planning to spend my $400 on just a buttload of fabric.
05:58Do you guys have some of these with like a silver sheen?
06:01I get all of them in black because I want this to be an all-black outfit,
06:05just so that it looks really powerful coming down the runway.
06:08Where's your pleated chiffon? I know I saw that.
06:10I've never worked with chiffon and I'm so excited to start working and start playing with these fabrics.
06:16Two of that and two of this.
06:19I'm using a very subtle, dull print as the lining of the dress and then a really bright, vibrant one
06:25as the outside.
06:27Do you have a thick one like this but in black?
06:29For the dress, I'm looking for a shirting that usually men would wear on their way to work.
06:35But in this case, I'm using it as a dress so I want a print that will complement the jacket that I'm making.
06:40Designers, you have five minutes remaining.
06:46Thank you so much.
06:48Thank you so much.
06:49All right, designers, let's head back to the work room.
06:52Thank you, Mood.
06:54Thank you, Mood.
07:01Yes, let's do this.
07:03Got so much fabric.
07:05This challenge is so freaking important.
07:07If you don't get it right, then you're out and I'm kind of freaked out.
07:12Remember, designers, you only have one day.
07:15So calibrate your ambitions accordingly.
07:18Okay.
07:19All right?
07:19Have fun, enjoy this, and I will be back later to check in with you.
07:23Okay.
07:23All right?
07:23Thank you, Mood.
07:24See you later.
07:27I don't know what I'm doing.
07:29I've never been so unsure of what I want to do.
07:32I think that I've always been so headstrong with my designs.
07:36And now I'm kind of questioning everything, and I have to really figure out what do I want to say.
07:42Can we talk about the fact that I have more paper than fabric?
07:46Anybody need paper?
07:48It's not going to look this crafty.
07:50How are you sewing this all together?
07:52With the machine?
07:53It's really hard to sew boning because it's so thick, but it's the last challenge.
07:58And I'm here to take risks, and I think that this is something out of my comfort zone,
08:02so I'm really excited to see how it works out.
08:04You so crazy.
08:06I know.
08:07I'm starting off creating the menswear-inspired dress.
08:10I'm feeling really, really nervous because I feel like the judges really want to see
08:15feminine wear.
08:16I'm wondering whether I can bring that to them or not.
08:19This is so stressful.
08:21Oh my god, I have no idea what I'm doing.
08:24I have no silhouette.
08:26All I have are these fabrics that aren't really working the way I wanted them to.
08:30I'm really doubting myself.
08:31Oh my god, it's so bad.
08:34If I were to go home right before the finale, that would just be the worst, worst thing possible.
08:42Coming up on Project Runway Junior.
08:44Are you starting over?
08:45I don't know.
08:46I'm so stressed out.
08:48Wow.
08:49Don't get off this path.
08:50Why did you choose not to flip it?
08:53I would love to see more versatility.
08:55You can leave the runway.
08:58Thank you, sweetie.
09:08I'm so stressed out.
09:12Everything isn't really coming together the way I want it to.
09:15Are you starting over?
09:16I don't know.
09:17I have no design idea.
09:19I've scrapped like three different bodices, two different skirts, and it's all just not working out.
09:26What is it that's bothering you?
09:27Like, is there a certain thing?
09:28I honestly don't know.
09:30Because I think you should figure out what it is.
09:33And if it's everything, then you should scrap it.
09:36I have nothing.
09:39You guys, today's the last day that we're going to be in the work room.
09:43Like, this is our last work day.
09:45Our last Tim critique.
09:47No, if we make it the finale.
09:49Oh, true, true, true.
09:51Our challenge is to create a design inspired by yourself.
09:55This has to be a huge wow for the judges to move you on to the finale.
10:00So there's so much pressure.
10:03I'm really excited to see how the fringe belt turns out because I feel like that's like the main design
10:07element in the whole look.
10:09At this point in the competition, there is no room for mistakes.
10:19Wow, this is the quietest work room ever.
10:23Well, I'm here to check in with you.
10:25Samaya, can I begin by saying this?
10:28Yes.
10:28Wow.
10:29You like it?
10:30Yeah.
10:33You can be strong and powerful and you can make a statement and be who you want to be no matter what
10:37age you are and that kind of thing.
10:39So I came up with this idea of this all boning vest kind of thing.
10:44Which is beautifully executed.
10:47It represents a rib cage because your rib cage is kind of your shield and it protects the important
10:52things, you know, your lungs and your heart.
10:53But then in the top, it's going to have this back piece that's going to have a zipper down it
10:58and it's going to represent like the spine.
11:00Mm-hmm.
11:01I'm not really sure what's going to go underneath this piece, but I know that it's going to be
11:05something simple but elegant just so that it doesn't take away from this very dramatic piece
11:11on top.
11:12Your biggest challenge now is the fit of this top and this bottom on your model because you
11:17want it to be excellent.
11:19Thank you, Tim.
11:19Carry on.
11:20All right.
11:21Maya has a lot going on.
11:23I don't know how at 14 she's so deep and I love what she's doing with this boning.
11:30She always has some kind of new and innovative way to do things.
11:36Katie, how are you?
11:38I'm good.
11:38How are you?
11:39I'm good.
11:39I was actually really inspired by this challenge.
11:42It all kind of started in middle school.
11:43I was just like super shy, awkward person.
11:46You?
11:47Yeah.
11:48What happened to you?
11:49There's a shirt everyone in my school wore that said,
11:52you can't sit with us.
11:53And I knew that I didn't want to wear that shirt, but I still wanted to fit in with everyone.
11:57So I went home and then made a shirt that said, you can sit with us.
12:00Oh.
12:01And I wore it to school and then from there everything changed.
12:03People started asking me like, oh, I like that shirt.
12:05Would you get it?
12:07And I just felt more unique and that helped me just get rid of that shy person.
12:12Wonderful.
12:12To bring in the iron-on textiles, I'm making a leather choker.
12:16Oh.
12:17Is this the shape of the back of the romper?
12:21I mean, yeah, this is.
12:22I'm just wondering if you want to just slightly scoop out that back.
12:26These are just pieces so I can cut into it.
12:28I think that Petey's my biggest competition.
12:30I think that her garments are so well thought out and they just have her name written all over them.
12:36Oh, yeah, I like that better.
12:37Thank you, Tim.
12:38Samantha.
12:40Hey, Tim.
12:40How are you?
12:41What's your story here?
12:42So my whole family tells me, you know, don't be a follower, be a leader.
12:47This is an African symbol that stands for leadership.
12:50Mm-hmm.
12:50To have four pockets on the jacket, as you see here.
12:54And I wanted to incorporate that out of this onto the pocket.
12:59Okay.
13:00So I feel like I'm really pushing my boundaries because the judges said,
13:03hey, how would it look if we had a dress from you?
13:06I'm so driven to this whole idea of having a long coat and a short dress.
13:11When you say a long coat, is it long as in the sketch?
13:14As in mid-calf, yeah.
13:16This is such a strong, dynamic print.
13:19I don't know that you want it all covered up.
13:21I am so married to this idea of it being long, but it wouldn't hurt to try something new.
13:27There is no being safe in this challenge.
13:30It's either you go home or you go to fashion week.
13:36Zachary.
13:37Hello.
13:37What's going on?
13:39You look very pensive.
13:42I'm really just trying to figure out, like, what I want to do with this.
13:45I started in a very different place than I am now.
13:49I have no idea what he's going to think of this.
13:51I think it's a lot better than anything I've done.
13:54It's definitely a step in the right direction.
13:56But I might have to scrap this if he doesn't like it.
13:59What is the story?
14:00I really wanted to play on this idea of, like, how many people call me, like, an old soul.
14:05I call you an old soul, too.
14:07And it's the highest compliment.
14:09And so I want to take very, like, mature silhouettes and, like, historical elements
14:13and put that into my garment.
14:15So I want to play with the whole early Dior, late Chanel kind of period.
14:20Hearing that, it makes everything here make sense.
14:22Yay.
14:23I think Zachary is my biggest competition because he is a great designer.
14:28And he knows everything about fashion.
14:31What's happening in the back?
14:32I don't know.
14:34I kind of, like, live my life by saying, like, you never look back.
14:36I was kind of wanting to do something very sparse, something very sheer, and then play
14:41with more modern shapes with the iron on.
14:45Okay.
14:46This has a potential wow factor.
14:48Don't get off this path.
14:50Okay, okay.
14:50Stay on it.
14:51This is definitely the push I need to just get out of this funk.
14:55And I need to just knock this out and create an amazing garment.
15:00Well, designers, I just have to tell you, you're four of the most excellent designers I've
15:04ever encountered.
15:05You have blown me away.
15:07I mean, I don't even have the adequate words to say how wowed I am.
15:13And I'm just glad I'm not a judge.
15:15It's such a huge compliment to hear Tim say that we're four of the best designers he's
15:22ever encountered because he's worked with 14 seasons of Project Runway.
15:26Carry on with the rest of the day.
15:27Your models will be in for a fitting, and you have four more hours.
15:31Okay?
15:32I love you all.
15:33We love you, too.
15:34Have a good day.
15:35Thank you, Tim.
15:35Thank you, Tim.
15:36You've got to love him.
15:38Say this is your fabric.
15:39Press it and peel it off.
15:41Let's do it.
15:42Go for it.
15:45All right.
15:49First things first, we're going to try this on.
15:51So I just want to get the dress shirt on first so I can see where this belt goes.
15:55So I restarted like five times.
15:57I can't believe she's already here.
15:58I have so much work to do.
16:00This iron-on transfer is just adding to the stress.
16:05That's perfect.
16:06Oh, yeah.
16:07That looks really cool.
16:08Is it way too small?
16:10I've just got the shorts and started over with them because they're so small.
16:14What I'm doing with the back is with the iron-on transfers.
16:17I couldn't finish the iron-on transfers, but I have the bodice.
16:20Bye.
16:21Bye.
16:22Bye.
16:23Bye.
16:29I'm like losing a lot of time on this.
16:32Katie, I can't wait to see this fringe thing that you're doing.
16:35I have every little fringe to sew on that belt.
16:38We need way more time.
16:39Oh, my gosh.
16:42What?
16:42Literally just cut this in half.
16:44Crap.
16:45Coming up on Project Runway Jr.
16:48I've never had more work to do in my life.
16:50I don't think I'm going to finish.
16:51Neither do I.
16:52Is everyone still working?
16:53I've got to finish.
16:54I've got to finish.
16:55Whoa.
17:03Oh, my gosh.
17:04What?
17:05Literally just cut this in half.
17:07Oh, crap.
17:08I pretty much cut the belt in like half.
17:11I just have to machine stitch it up to make sure that, you know, it's all closed.
17:16But it's really bothering me.
17:20Everyone in the workroom is stressed.
17:21We all have so much work to do.
17:23We have this extra iron-on transfers that we have to do.
17:27It's just adding on to everything.
17:29Why do you look like a shrimp and not a swirly thing?
17:33I've never seen shrimp look like that before.
17:35Whoa.
17:36You need to stop.
17:38What?
17:38No, that looks amazing.
17:40I love the way that these transfers are coming out.
17:43I think that I'm using it in a really expensive way and it looks really creative.
17:49I don't even know if it would like work.
17:51It's perfect.
17:51Zachary has turned his look around.
17:53It gets so much better than anything that he's had before.
17:57So pretty.
17:58Thanks.
17:58I'm really nervous because...
17:59Let me be your Pippa Middleton.
18:01I don't know what that is.
18:02You didn't watch the royal wedding?
18:04No.
18:04Oh, goodness.
18:05Oh.
18:06I've got this coat done to a point where I love it.
18:09The dress sucks.
18:11I don't want to send it down the runway, but at this point I may have to.
18:14So I'm really, really nervous.
18:19I have so much to do.
18:20It's crazy.
18:21I have no idea how I'm going to finish this.
18:23Do you know how much time we have left?
18:25Probably like five minutes.
18:26Are you serious?
18:27I had to guess.
18:28Oh my gosh.
18:29I don't think I'm going to finish.
18:31Neither do I.
18:32I was hoping that I could have the fringe and the choker done by the day, but I don't have either done.
18:38Guys, we gotta go even though I don't want to.
18:40Oh my God.
18:41Tomorrow's definitely going to be the most important runway.
18:45So nervous about the whole thing.
18:50We gotta finish, we gotta finish, we gotta finish.
18:53Whoa.
18:54Don't die today, Pady.
18:56This is the very last runway, and I have to finish this because I know I'm going to be going home if I supply my design.
19:02Samantha, on a scale of one to ten, how freaked out are you?
19:05Maybe a six.
19:06I'm like at an 11.
19:08Point five.
19:09The finale is this close.
19:10It's crazy.
19:14Hi.
19:15Hi.
19:1630 minutes from now, your models will come in.
19:1830 minutes later, we will be going down to the runway, all right?
19:21Work hard, work hard.
19:23See you in an hour.
19:24See you.
19:26I have to put in the zipper, and I have to do all the hems,
19:29and I have to put the back panel onto the piece.
19:31I've never had more work to do in my life.
19:33I'm really annoyed at the fact that I left all of my iron-on transfers for last.
19:38I'm debating whether I want all four pockets to have it, or just two.
19:43Oh my gosh, I'm done.
19:44I don't know.
19:44I just can't like imagine the finale without one of us.
19:48Yeah, I can't imagine it either.
19:49I don't know how they're going to make their decision.
19:51Zachary's look is definitely not my style, but I can see a lot of girls in New York wearing that to a gala.
19:56I don't know either.
20:00Look at that.
20:01That's gross.
20:02I love it.
20:03Oh my gosh, it is so good.
20:04When mom comes in, I realize I still haven't made the choker, and I have to have the choker,
20:09or else I won't have any iron-on transfers on my garment.
20:12I am so stressed.
20:13How does it feel?
20:14Good.
20:15Good, okay.
20:17I just need to finish this back piece, and then hand sew my model into the skirt.
20:22So this falls apart on the runway.
20:24Just pretend like it's a dramatic moment, and it's supposed to be like that.
20:28It's just so much pressure is on us right now.
20:31I'm nervous because compared to everyone else's look, mine is leaning towards on the simple side.
20:36Just like sew it, yeah.
20:38I'm competing with three long dresses, and I have this short sporty dress.
20:42I'm going to sew it just like that.
20:45I'm feeling a little bit better than I was yesterday about my look.
20:50I think that it will just lay nicer, and fit nicer, and hopefully move really well.
20:57Is everyone still working?
20:59Yes.
20:59Yes.
21:00Well, designers and models, we have to go down to the runway.
21:06Off we go.
21:07The winner of Project Runway Junior will receive a full scholarship to the prestigious FIDM in
21:19California, a complete home sewing and crafting studio provided by Brother, a feature in Seventeen
21:24Magazine, and a $25,000 cash prize to help launch their lives.
21:29Hello, everybody.
21:36Welcome back to the runway.
21:38Hi.
21:38As you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
21:43Honestly, all four of you are prodigies.
21:46You have talent, you have drive, and you make all of us excited about where fashion is headed.
21:51I really can't imagine seeing any of you go at this point, so it's really tough.
21:57But unfortunately, this is a competition, and one of you will be out.
22:01For this challenge, you were your own muse.
22:03We asked you to make a statement with your design.
22:06You could create whatever you wanted as long as it represented your views or a personal journey of yours.
22:12You also used Rowenta irons to iron on material and create your own textile.
22:17Okay, you had one day and $400 to create your looks.
22:21Let's say hello to the judges.
22:23First, we have fashion designer Christian Siriano.
22:26Hello.
22:27Fashion critic and fashion designer Miss Kelly Osborne.
22:30Hello, designers.
22:32And fashion director for Seventeen and Cosmopolitan Magazine's Aya Kanai.
22:37Hi.
22:38Also, we have Tim Gunn here for the runway show.
22:43Okay, let's start the show.
22:47I'm super happy that I pulled it all together.
22:58I finished it.
22:59I've been staring at this for, I think, 11 hours.
23:04It's kind of hard to, like, get a pair of fresh eyes, but it really represents me,
23:10and I'm feeling pretty good about it.
23:24I'm worried that it's a little too simple, but I just hope that I can maybe get away with this one
23:36because of how true I say to myself.
23:38I listened to the judges when they said, hey, we're going to see a dress from you.
23:41I was being open-minded by taking that suggestion, and I just combined it with what I like to do,
23:46and that's what I came up with.
23:58Oh. My.
24:01Wow.
24:04So cool.
24:05She looks strong. She looks powerful. She looks fearless.
24:16And she looks like the girl that I've become more inside.
24:21It really has that balance between masculine and feminine, and between curly and edgy.
24:26All of those things together really show who I am as a designer, and I'm so proud to slap my name on that.
24:51Get it, Rachel.
24:56I am so proud of what I made.
24:58I think that it's really true to who I am and who I am just as a person and not a designer.
25:04I love the way it's moving.
25:05I love the color.
25:06I love the texture.
25:07I love the matte against the sheen.
25:09I love the sheen peeking out.
25:11I mean, you definitely have to stare at it, and it's captivating.
25:27This challenge determines who will compete during New York Fashion Week.
25:31And unfortunately, one of you will be out.
25:36Coming up on Project Runway Jr., you gave a wow factor before we even saw what you had made.
25:42I would have loved to see a little bit more feminine underneath.
25:45I just wish we had a little bit of an editing eye here.
25:48This challenge determines who will move forward to compete during New York Fashion Week.
25:58Maya, tell us about your inspiration for the look and your look.
26:02I wanted to create this strong, powerful warrior princess.
26:07That's what I feel like I grew into during this competition.
26:10I made this outer coat, and inside there's like a boning vest.
26:16It is representative of a rib cage because your rib cage is kind of like your shield.
26:22Down the back is like the spine because, you know, you have to have like a strong backbone to kind of make it.
26:28Also on the back piece is where I use the iron-on transfers.
26:32It's really subtle, but I did it in black so that it sort of had just like more dimension.
26:36That was my inspiration for this look.
26:40The first thing that both I and I said when we just saw the silhouette alone was wow.
26:46You gave a wow factor before we even saw what you had made.
26:49The way you cut the back and allowing there to be a sporty element is just beautiful.
26:55You created this push and pull between hard and soft.
27:00The structure of the the bone vest that is underneath this flowing element.
27:07I love the way it looks from the back.
27:09And now that I hear you describe it as an emphasis on backbone because that's what it takes to be successful.
27:16Well, I just love it even more.
27:18Because it's such a hard piece, and then you use this really light flowy fabric.
27:23I think it was such a contrast that that's what made it really special.
27:27And I definitely see this warrior princess in her.
27:33I think my favorite part is really in all your details.
27:35Can she take this cape off?
27:37Yes.
27:37I just really want to see what this little dress looks like.
27:39I don't necessarily love the fabric choice underneath because I think you have a lot of rippling.
27:44And it's kind of distracting just for one kind of critique.
27:47So you really created like a cage within this piece.
27:51Oh yeah, it's very structured.
27:53Yeah, this definitely took me the most amount of time I would say.
27:57Zachary, tell us about your statement and your look.
28:00Since day one, I was always called like an old soul.
28:02And so I wanted to incorporate this maturity into my look.
28:06And I always joke with everybody around me, I'm like Edna Mode from The Incredibles.
28:10It's like I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.
28:13And so the back of the dress, I wanted to keep it sheer and really like kind of bare
28:19because I don't want that to be a focus.
28:21But I wanted to make it kind of ironic and make it one of the focuses of my dress.
28:26And so it's the iron-on textile on the organza.
28:31With the Rowenta challenge, I think that yours has been one of the more successful uses
28:36of the iron-on challenge. Of course, you've got some like small issues with fit in the bust.
28:42Just for runway appeal, the skirt, because it has that matte quality,
28:47you can't see that the texture itself has this beautiful movement to it.
28:52You love a top with that cut and a low neckline. You love a peplum.
28:56It's supposed to be fragile, and I wanted to bring in those kind of elements
29:00with like the softer fabrics that are layered over the more harder.
29:03Are they pleated underneath?
29:05It's a pleated satin and then a crinkled chiffon.
29:09I get what you're going for, but unfortunately, because it's dark in here,
29:12it didn't have that fluidity to it.
29:14And you miss the exquisite details that you've actually put in there.
29:18I love that this look is very mature, but it also feels like I could put almost anyone in
29:25this outfit. The only complaint I have is the skirt. Walking down the runway, it felt really heavy.
29:33Since this is slit in the front, could you just hold up these sides just for a second?
29:38This textile underneath, it's a pleated satin. It is just so gorgeous. Why did you choose not to flip
29:45it where that's on the top and the other's on the bottom?
29:49In my mind, it would have moved more.
29:51I think that's something that I think we just lost a little bit here, unfortunately. I just wish
29:56we had a little bit of an editing eye here.
30:00Samantha, tell us about your inspiration and your look.
30:03Getting your feedback and everything just being positive, I feel very grateful.
30:07And this is what I came up with. This textile right here is actually, um, it's my interpretation
30:14of this African symbol that stands for leadership. And I wanted to choose leadership because my
30:18family has told me ever since I was young, be a leader, not a follower.
30:22I commend you for doing a dress because I really needed to see it. Can she take off the jacket?
30:28Is this dress finished? Yes. The dress is finished. Yes, it's finished.
30:33I just love this silhouette. Does the belt go all the way around? Can she turn?
30:37So it's like, you know, this full belted, just like a shirt dress. This felt a little more casual,
30:42cool, like obviously if they're on the rack in the showroom, these are kind of like your wearable,
30:48sellable items or some of your other jackets have been more expensive and luxe feeling.
30:52Even when you bring in the femininity and womanliness of a dress,
30:57it still has its menswear element. And that is something that you have told us is a staple of
31:03your look from day one. Your work really proves that it's a reflection of your aesthetic and your
31:09point of view. And that's always great to see. Thank you. I love your heat transfer,
31:14the story behind it on the pockets. I think that that's so empowering and strong and beautiful.
31:18If I'm going to say one thing, the hemline at the bottom of the dress is the one thing that my eye
31:24keeps going to. I love that you gave us a dress finally, but I would have loved to see something
31:31a little bit more feminine underneath to make that contrast even more. Thank you, Samantha.
31:38Paidi, tell us about your inspiration and your look.
31:42I'd have the best experience in middle school and I started speaking through myself with my clothes and
31:48just try to be more unique. And I really want to show that in my look. So this bright print represents
31:55who I am today. And this like more subtle dull print represents who I was in sixth and seventh grade.
32:00And the idea is that this dull print is just aligning and, you know, it's still there, but can never,
32:07you know, be the main part of the outfit because it's always going to be overpowered by the sprite print.
32:12I like your girl. She's so different from everyone else. Her little mini dress though underneath is
32:17quite short. It's a romper. Is it? Yeah. Can we pull this part away? Oh, how cute. Now that I see
32:25that it's short, it kind of makes much more sense. Your look is so happy. It's empowered. It's full of
32:32spirit. And that I think is so connected to the kind of life that you live now. That is what I love
32:39the most about this look. I love that you use prints because that's not what we see a lot up
32:44here. I think the little romper shorts is adorable. I love that it's long. You did a great job.
32:50Thank you. Did you make the belt? Yeah, I did. It was allowed working with all the grommets. Did you
32:57hammer the grommets in? Yeah. Gosh, that must have taken so much time. It looks really expensive. It
33:01really does. It took a lot of time. Thanks for chatting with us. You can leave the runway. Thank you.
33:06Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'm so nervous. I'm so nervous. I want to look at the
33:13finale so bad. They loved all your looks except for mom. They loved it. Oh, I love it, but. I need
33:21to make it to New York Fashion Week and I want to create a collection. It's just so close. I could taste it.
33:29I'm taking it off. This is so amazing. There's no way that this girl learned how to make this
33:36on YouTube. I don't get it. I'm telling you, this is so complicated. I mean, I have sewers that would
33:43have to do this three or four times because it's perfect. It lays so flat. And it's so like mature
33:49and sort of dark and very dramatic for such a young girl. Yeah, I know it is. Just the idea itself
33:55is so innovative that it clearly comes from a place that's purely Maya. Yeah.
34:00Yeah. I feel blind. Could you tell that the belt was the same fabrication? No. Okay,
34:06because I couldn't either. It's amazing. I'm into her. It has every element that you would want from
34:10an editorial point of view to create an exciting fashion story. I mean, I think she did a really
34:17great job. I think it's cool. It's innovative. I also think we know what her girl is. It's bohemian
34:22girl, and then she gave us that but a wow factor. This is just so fabulous. Like,
34:30imagine even if he just did something like that. I just feel like he didn't think about it enough.
34:34The Zachary who presented himself for this challenge is not the Zachary I've known the
34:40the entire season. I said to him when I approached his table to have the critique with him,
34:44I said, there's something wrong. What is it? And he said, I don't know what I'm doing. I said,
34:48that's so unlike you. We spent a lot of time together talking this through. So I feel like
34:53he lost who his woman was. Exactly. And I feel like everybody pushed the limit so far out of that
35:01comfort zone. Yeah. Except for Zachary with this, because I'm sorry, he sent stuff down this runway
35:09that is better than this. Oh, yeah. Like the second challenge was better than this. Unreal. Yeah.
35:14And better constructed. Yeah. That's the thing. I feel like if it was really beautifully
35:18made, it would help a little bit, but it's pretty rough. I don't think that this look is as strong
35:23as some of the other looks that we have here today. There's something very modern and fresh and
35:29beautiful and young about this, even though she's gone with like a much stiffer fabric and
35:37her clothes have a very distinct point of view. I feel like I'm seeing a little bit of the same
35:42thing from her over and over. And like, I'm obsessed with her jackets, but it seems like
35:46it's been repeated. I would love to see more versatility. She's missing her wow factor.
35:52Yeah, she's missing a little wow.
35:56Do we all agree? Are we sure?
35:59Okay, let's bring them out.
36:08Showing during New York Fashion Week is huge for any designer, but the fact that you are just
36:14teenagers, it is unbelievable to us. Each and every one of you has a bright future in fashion,
36:20and we'll be able to say we knew you when. You better not forget us.
36:26Maya,
36:29congratulations. You are moving forward to compete during New York Fashion Week.
36:36It's amazing to feel some of your dreams come true, and this has been the best experience of my life,
36:41and it gets to keep going, so thank you guys.
36:44You're moving forward. You can leave the runway.
36:48I've dreamed about this since I was a little girl, and to be able to say,
36:53yeah, I made it to fashion week when I was 14 years old. It's like, wow, it's crazy. It's like,
36:59I can't even wrap my head around it.
37:02Katie, congratulations.
37:05Oh my gosh.
37:06You're going to be showing at New York Fashion Week.
37:08Oh my gosh, this is crazy. Thank you guys so much.
37:12This is insane.
37:14You're welcome.
37:15You're moving forward. You can leave the runway.
37:17Thank you guys so much.
37:19To think that I'm going to be showing during New York Fashion Week, I am so excited.
37:25Yes!
37:26Oh my gosh!
37:35Samantha and Zachary, one of you will be moving forward to New York Fashion Week,
37:40and unfortunately, one of you will be out.
37:45Samantha, your designs have been impressive from day one, and we love your tomboy chic style.
37:51We just wish you would have pushed yourself a little further. A runway show needs some wow.
37:58Zachary, you definitely know your woman, and you definitely always bring the drama.
38:03You are wise beyond your years, and you have blown us away challenge after challenge.
38:08We feel like you lost your way a little bit in this challenge.
38:13We know that both of your runway shows would be spectacular, but unfortunately, this is a competition.
38:21We are moving forward to compete during New York Fashion Week.
38:35I feel like I meant to go into Fashion Week because I was able to say to myself,
38:42I can't wait to show the world what I'm going to be offering next.
38:46You're in. You can leave the runway.
38:55Sorry.
38:58Zachary, you are amazing. We love you so much, and we believe in you.
39:05Today, you lost your way, but I love your work.
39:08So if you need anything for your next collection, like anything that you're working on, like I'm ready to help you.
39:13Thank you. Thank you.
39:15This is just the beginning for you.
39:17Yeah.
39:18You are so smart. You are so talented, and we have seen it on this runway, and it sucks for us because
39:24I wanted to see you in that final so badly.
39:28I have not only loved your work, but more importantly, you, the person, and how thoughtful you are about
39:39every single word that comes out of your mouth, and I and everyone here just adores you.
39:45I need to give you a hug.
39:46I'm going to ruin your self-talk.
39:48Oh, it's fine. Get over here.
39:53I struggled so much with this challenge. It's hard, of course, to think that. I was so close.
40:01Okay, Zachary, you can leave the runway. Thank you, Svidi.
40:04Thank you guys so much. This has been amazing.
40:17I'm a mess.
40:38Oh, God.
40:45Zachary, I want you to listen to me.
40:49We all know how talented you are.
40:53And I firmly believe that this challenge was a misstep for you, and you're not going anywhere.
41:02I'm using my Tim Gunn safe.
41:03Oh, my God.
41:05Oh, my God.
41:07Tim has been my savior.
41:09Oh, my God.
41:10You are showing a collection at New York Fashion Week.
41:16I'm so happy I'm safe. It's been a roller coaster.
41:20You're all going to Fashion Week.
41:22I could not believe all four of us are going to Fashion Week.
41:29So, let's get some air, everybody.
41:30Can we put my shoes on?
41:31All right. Everyone's going.
41:33Yay.
41:34Off we go.
41:36Next stop, New York Fashion Week.
