10:29We all watched our finalists take their first steps in this competition and now we will see how far they've come

10:59I just want to say that this is not a collection
11:03This is a love letter
11:07And this story is about me meeting my grandmother for the first time in vietnam
11:12And then also i figured out as i was making this collection
11:18It was really about my family building their life and then i'm a representation of how far they've come

12:12This sort of gray olive color is where we're going more into vietnam and kind of like these shapes typical in our culture
12:20One thing in this collection that's really prevalent is this shape of the ally eyes the lines are so good
12:39This look is ultra feminine but has masculine elements as well
12:43It is really the next evolution into my design stage
12:46This collection is about everything i'm trying to connect to
12:59This is one of the best pieces i've ever made
13:17It is so dynamic it is so powerful it is so emotional

13:47This piece is the finale piece because not only is it all white which is the antithesis of what i started with
13:55This is where the culture of my family really comes out referencing where i came from

14:12All of these separate pieces are really the fabric of who i am as a person
14:17Everything i learned in the last 20 years of my life were put into this collection

14:43It is my honor to present this collection to you all tonight that i have titled i wither then bite
14:51My inspiration for this collection was my journey with fear
14:56Throughout my whole life i've let fear control my actions whether it was the fear of never being good enough
15:02The fear of expressing my authentic gender expression or the fear of committing my life to being a fashion designer
15:10And i let that fear build up this armor on me that i thought was protecting me
15:14But it was really holding me back and it was through this competition that i learned to take pieces of those armor off

15:25Seeing my first look come down this runway is amazing
15:38It really represents the shedding of an old skin and a rebirth
15:45The whole point is that i'm taking off my armor you know i'm letting my guard down and being really vulnerable here
15:53I'm a queer designer creating for the queer community
15:58And it took me coming here to realize that fashion was the vehicle that brought myself to my own identity

16:07Oh, yeah, so that is so good. It's sexy, but it's weird which i feel like is me

24:45That bow dress was a real wow moment for me it was very old hollywood
24:51Well I really wanted to take things that were like traditionally evening wear
24:54And then add sport wear elements into those
24:58And then take things that were traditionally street wear and then make those more evening
25:03And even within here this is like a neoprene sport material which I combined
25:08People get confused they think it's a dress they're actually pants
25:11I like the first three looks the most I thought they were really well made
25:16Do I think there could be some refinements?
25:18Yes some of the accessorizing was a bit distracting to your work
25:23But what's very important is that you realize the importance of leaning into your vulnerability
25:28This is the collection where it just flowed right through me
25:31Those last few pieces I was like wow they are so well executed
25:37I could see those pieces in a couture show and it's refreshing
25:41And I was like well if he can do that what else can he do
25:44So much more

25:49I totally agree and one of my favorite looks I would say was the dress with the pink necktie
25:54It seemed like you flirted with color well I just really wanted it very balanced and

26:41This was really centered around
26:43My journey with fear not only through this competition but through my entire life
26:48You kind of have to go through these sort of transformations and rebirths to
26:53Step into something that's been waiting for you the whole time
26:56Truly what came down the runway was 10 different like versions of myself
27:00I really have appreciated the way you've been able to
27:03Contrast gender and create something that is unconventional
27:08This looks this sort of my take on a suit of armor and it's something that
27:12Demands attention it's confident it's bold it's a little cheeky it's risky and it's
27:17Really everything that i've turned into throughout this whole experience
27:20I always love the stories that you tell and your attention to detail is great
27:25I know like we've had a lot of discussions about corsets
27:28Maybe we shouldn't be doing so many corsets but at the end of the day
27:32You know they really work with what you do
27:35I nurture corsetry and it's something that's always going to be that pulse of my creativity
27:39But my opening look was very intentional where the corset was unbound
27:43You're so good at craftsmanship
27:46You know how to create something
27:49And I know every choice you make has a reason and I love that
27:53There was something daring about the way you incorporated the sportiness the shoulder pads with the drapery
28:00The coat for me was amazing and then the little like kind of bustle or crinoline pop in the back
28:05Yeah, I definitely wear that fabulous
28:08Going to this competition. I think we knew that we were going to get historical references
28:12And we were asking you to push it into something that was modern and I think you did that today
28:19Obviously the historical element is always going to inform things but
28:22Pushed myself quite far with like some of the silhouettes that i played with and the materials
28:26Playing with different materials is great
28:28But I think it was a little bit awkward
28:30You don't really want to see that struggle physically on the runway
28:34I agree. I think the tin fabric kind of went a bit too far. It's a fine balance
28:39But you know, I love your work, and I thought this was a nice evolution

28:54It's been incredible to really explore these sides of myself. We were unsure of if you could create
29:02Ideas without someone giving you a specific idea this was a strong look
29:08This was one where you were not playing around
29:11We got to see who you were as a designer who you are as a person
29:14I'll say like this is probably my favorite piece in the collection
29:18But the drive and the creativeness was just flowing through me
29:22I quite enjoyed your collection. I thought it was fun. You started with the bang, right?

29:28Less I like the cross between the biker jacket and the bomber
29:32Yes, but if that was amped up way bigger in proportion
29:36It would match the energy of the what you were showing
29:39This show was a roller coaster there was highs and there was lows like the diamante
29:43Tank top that was one of the looks I wasn't a fan of you know
29:46I didn't really understand where it made sense in the collection as a whole
29:51Here's my thing. I think everyone had fillers to be honest. There was a few fillers for everyone
29:55However, I have to say when you came out and was like, I just want fun

30:03It was a little tacky, but I don't think that's bad and that in itself means something
30:09You really have brought me personally a lot of joy and I have to say that dress
30:16Oh wow, I've been to some of the most incredible couture shows in the world and I was like right up there

31:03Am so impressed with those designers they put on a show for us. I'm so proud of them. I love that we saw three
31:12Very different opinions on fashion. That was a lot of work, right? They pushed themselves
31:19Well, I think there's no doubt that all three have great potential
31:24When it comes to Charles, I was impressed off the bat look one two and three. I thought they were great
31:29Sporty it felt like him. It looks like him. I mean technically savvy
31:34But then when it got further into the middle when we saw the pink we started to be softened that splash of pink
31:41I love that pink gown and he went someplace. He never went before we did ask for different silhouettes the big bow
31:48I'm gonna wear that one day. That's why I really appreciate what Charles has created
31:52Charles knows who he is his clothes usually looked like armor
31:55And we still got that armor today, but there was a lightness to it, you know, it felt strong, but also
32:02Delicate one of the highlights for me was he told us a really beautiful and personal story really did feel like a love letter
32:08But I think if he pared it down a little bit more
32:10I think it would have been better I understand the cultural aspect of it the reference in vietnam
32:15But to me a bit literal with the hats it leaned to costuming for me
32:22Okay, let's talk about curtis
32:24curtis knows
32:25Fashion and I think he has the potential to really go far and I could see this new version of him
32:32There's the sequence says the mermaid shape. There's the lacing. There were some
32:37Really interesting pieces and really interesting compelling looks and the fact that he
32:44Really gave us these separates that you could maybe wear in your own
32:49Whimsical way. I loved that t-shirt that teacher could be very commercial
32:53You know, that's something I can see in the stores
32:55You know, my favorite was the coat it was for me very digestible
33:00Yeah, I actually thought like I'd wear that exactly I thought the coat if it was cinched with a very tight corset
33:06It would have been sexier to me that jacket wasn't done
33:10Right where it flared out in the back did not flare out in the right spot. It was too low. That is an issue
33:19And then leland I think leland's collection brought so much joy to the runway. I really
33:25Was amazed by this. It's not necessarily my taste, but I was I was interested
33:31First look had like, you know, it gives me a little galliana almost, you know
33:34Look one was amazing. I think that was a great way to like set the tone
33:38But then I think there was some parts of the collection that felt maybe more pedestrian
33:43Look one's a high look two is interesting. Look three for me
33:47Interesting those two first looks I could see on cardi b
33:51The best designers that i've ever seen have a little sass and it's nice to finally smile at something
33:58Those outfits just made you want to scream with joy
34:02That dragon dress was hilarious
34:04We've been telling him, you know, don't do the costumes and there were still a couple of costumes in there
34:09No question, but it's almost like he couldn't resist it
34:12And I actually got teary-eyed when that last magnificent ball gown
34:16Came out because I thought that was the most incredible kind of, you know
34:21Punk ball gown that I've ever seen and i've seen a lot of them
34:25Yeah, you know, I think I agree the last look for me was one of my favorites. I think it was a great way to end the show
34:32This reminded me why I fell in love with fashion in the first place

34:40Each and every one of them they all really proved that they are willing to go the distance
34:47I mean, this is the hardest it's been this whole season so proud of all of them. This is so difficult
