00:00It's time for Daryl, he's brought to you by...
00:02Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:05Morning, Daryl.
00:06Daryl, you've been exposed in your coverage.
00:09Liar.
00:10I think you left out a Shador touchdown.
00:12And you're just trying to make one quarterback look good and the other bad.
00:15How do you answer for this, Daryl?
00:18Yeah, a guy who's been covering the Cleveland Browns is trying to make Deshaun Watson look better than Shador Sanders.
00:22Yeah, I post videos that are of good quality and that actually look like I know what I'm doing when
00:31I'm shooting them.
00:32Okay, Scorsese.
00:34How do I know they're not AI?
00:35You know, we don't know.
00:36We're just asking questions.
00:38I can assure you, none of my Browns highlight videos are AI.
00:44Paul Thomas Anderson joining us here on the show.
00:46So who do you have as the leader?
00:48Wait a minute.
00:49Let me just ask you here.
00:50Do you think the QB race is already decided?
00:54No.
00:56Okay.
00:56Then why do I just keep hearing everybody, everybody, everybody saying that Deshaun Watson's in the lead?
01:01If everybody's saying he's in the lead and Todd Monk in, well, he's kind of been wishy-washy about that
01:07lately.
01:08Right.
01:08But it seemed that he did want to originally have this decided by the time training camp came around.
01:13Right.
01:15You kind of got to see it for what it is, don't I?
01:19Yeah.
01:19Now, look, I think part of the reason that, you know, you're hearing Deshaun is in the lead is based
01:27on what folks are seeing in practice.
01:32It appears to me like they're trying to keep the reps between Deshaun and Shadour as equal as possible without,
01:42you know, I don't get the impression that Todd Monk has his finger on the scales like Kevin Stefanski did
01:49last year with the quarterback competition.
01:51Right.
01:52I mean, Joe Flacco ended up starting and I don't remember him taking a first team rep during the first
01:58training camp.
01:58That's a good point.
01:59That's a real good point.
02:00So I do.
02:02I do feel like this is more of a legitimate quarterback competition between Deshaun and Shadour.
02:09From my standpoint, I think Deshaun is in the lead just because of his experience.
02:15You know, he's been in the league a long time.
02:17I'm sure it's been a long time since he's been an elite player, but, you know, he he's got the
02:26experience and it stands to reason that he most likely will win the quarterback competition and be your week one
02:32starter.
02:33Do I think he'll be the week 17, 18 starter?
02:35No, I do not.
02:36So we'll find out who that ultimately ends up being.
02:39And I do think that Shadour is going to get an opportunity to start some football games.
02:43Exactly.
02:44For one reason or another.
02:46Exactly.
02:46And I also look at this like I don't think it's imperative that Shadour wins the quarterback competition.
02:52If it is Deshaun week one, I don't view that as a failure on Shadour's part at all.
02:58If anything, I think a little bit of a benefit.
02:59Hey, that just buys him some more time to prepare and get ready for the next time he takes the
03:06field as the starting quarterback for the Browns.
03:08So, yeah, I, you know, I think Deshaun is in the lead.
03:12I don't think it's by a wide margin, but, you know, his experience is showing here early in practice and
03:19he looks healthy, you know, and he's he's had some really good throws.
03:24He's also had some throws to remind us of training camps have passed right and in games have passed where
03:30he has struggled.
03:31But, you know, I do think that, you know, Shadour is going to get his opportunity this year, regardless if
03:40it's in week one or later in the season.
03:42Well, Daryl, I think you've been very balanced.
03:44We played your audio on this like you have recognized that.
03:48Sure, fine.
03:49Deshaun Watson looks like he is regaining that athleticism and looks like he's had some zip on the ball.
03:56But you've also said what we've said, which is it's May.
04:00Like, yeah, there's no pass rush.
04:02So we're just pointing all that out.
04:04I don't think there's anything wrong with stating that.
04:07And because of that, like maybe Watson does have the edge now.
04:11But also, who knows what it's going to look like in September when teams are trying to crush him.
04:15Right. And that's where I'm at right now.
04:18Okay, great. He looks healthy.
04:20He's throwing the football well.
04:22The footwork looks good.
04:23All those things. Great.
04:25But I need to see it against a live defense because, let's be honest about it,
04:32Deshaun, every time he has come back from a long layoff, he has struggled mightily.
04:37Struggled after the 11-game suspension.
04:40Struggled coming back from the shoulder injury.
04:41Now we're going to see what it looks like after missing an entire year with multiple ruptures of the same
04:48Achilles.
04:48So, you know, I'm trying not to get too – I'm not trying to hype fans up about what Deshaun
04:58may or may not be able to do for this team.
05:00Because I don't think that's fair to Deshaun.
05:02And also, too, again, the track record is what the track record is when you're talking about him coming off
05:07long layoffs.
05:09Also, it's not fair to the fans because no one wants to get their hopes up.
05:13And then all of a sudden, he does what he's done again, which is disappoint.
05:17And then the fans are going to say, well, you guys told us everything looked good and he was going
05:20to be great, this, that, and the other, right?
05:22I'm not going to lie to fans.
05:24Look, yes, there are times in practice.
05:26Look, the other day, we were out there Wednesday.
05:28He had a very good day.
05:30Not going to lie to me.
05:30He had a very good day.
05:32Which one had a very good day?
05:33Deshaun.
05:34Okay.
05:34Okay, look good.
05:36But again, it's May, and let me see that against a live defense when there's the threat of him actually
05:43being hit by somebody.
05:46You saw the, or you were there for the Mike Rutenberg answer when asked about talking to Miles Garrett.
05:51Yeah.
05:53All right, I'm an excitable boy.
05:54Sounded familiar.
05:56What do you mean it sounded familiar?
05:58Well.
05:58What do you mean?
05:59Well, they've talked, but Miles isn't exactly racing into that facility to have sit-downs with anyone.
06:08I didn't like how he kind of answered the second question before he actually answered the first question.
06:12Like, he answered a follow-up question before he answered the original question.
06:16I'm like, ah, somebody talked to him and loaded his lips.
06:18Like, do you think that there's a, could we actually be talking about this next week?
06:23Like, could this be a serious consideration?
06:25Could something break?
06:26Like, oh, the Cowboys have reached out to the Browns or something like that.
06:30Sure.
06:31Ah, geez.
06:32Yeah, absolutely.
06:33I mean, the Cowboys wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't reach out to the Browns.
06:38Well, yeah, but if it's actually out there, then that means there's actually been conversation.
06:42And you know where that likely will have come from.
06:46Where?
06:47One of two places.
06:48Either Dallas or Miles Camp.
06:50Damn you.
06:51Right?
06:51I mean, because that's not how Andrew Barry does business, okay?
06:56Andrew Barry, when he is in any type of a negotiation, it's crickets.
07:02You don't hear a word from him, okay?
07:05That's not a criticism, by the way.
07:06I want to be clear.
07:07I'm not criticizing Andrew there.
07:08But that's not, Andrew is very professional in how he goes about trade conversations, free agency negotiations, those type of
07:17things, right?
07:18So, if there is any noise out there regarding Miles and potential destinations and teams that are interested, rest assured
07:27it is not coming from the Cleveland Browns front office.
07:29Because, again, that's not how Andrew Barry does business.
07:33But, yeah, I do think that once June 1st hits, that, yeah, it wouldn't shock me if Miles Garrett trade
07:40rumors have popped up.
07:41Look, nobody has explained why the payment structure in his contract had to be done or needed to be done
07:49or was wanted to be done, right?
07:52Everyone has kind of tried to downplay it and say, nothing to see here.
07:55Please disperse.
07:56But it's hard not to notice those things.
07:59Because that adjustment makes it easier to trade him.
08:01Yeah, how could you downplay it?
08:03I mean, clearly, it's mutually beneficial for both sides to do that because if the Browns are, you know, basically
08:10bowled over by a huge offer.
08:12And also, if Miles really does behind the scenes want to get traded and instead of doing the PR campaign
08:17like last time, this time he quietly does it.
08:19Like, both of them would want that contract to be more easily moved.
08:24Yeah, and, you know, here's the other part of this, and I've said this recently, this organization's not losing its
08:33way into a top two or three pick next year or, you know, next April.
08:37Okay?
08:38That's not going to happen.
08:39They're going to win anywhere between seven and nine games.
08:41Maybe they win ten.
08:42Then why the hell trade away Miles Garrett?
08:44Well, here's why, Ken, because the only way you're getting that quarterback is you need picks.
08:49And who's the guy on this team that's going to get you those picks?
08:52What I'm saying is if you trade away Miles Garrett, I think that makes the job harder.
08:56That win total goes down.
08:57There you go.
08:58Yeah.
08:59That win total goes down.
09:00No question about it.
09:01But I'm just saying, like, I just, I mean, and this is no shade at Miles, but, like, how much
09:09of the Browns won with Miles Garrett here?
09:10And he is a once-in-a-generation future Hall of Famer.
09:15It's kind of like the Joe Thomas thing, right?
09:16It's unfortunate that Joe Thomas never got to play in a playoff game.
09:19He's the first Hall of Famer of the expansion era.
09:22The Browns didn't win squat when he was here.
09:24I understand that.
09:25And plenty of people say that.
09:27My boss over at the TV station says it over at 8.
09:30And I say right back to him, yeah, imagine how cruddy we'd be had we had traded away Joe Thomas,
09:35had we traded away Miles Garrett.
09:36I mean, everybody says that.
09:37It's like, man, you'd be even worse.
09:39I know.
09:40Look, I get it.
09:41I understand it.
09:42But, I mean, until they've, here's the reality, okay?
09:45Until they get the quarterback thing figured out and find their franchise guy that can play at an elite level
09:51for a decade, right?
09:55You know what?
09:55I'm not even going to, I'm not going to get, I'm going to say for five years.
09:58Can we get a guy that can play at an elite level for five years?
10:01Let's not get too greedy, right?
10:02Even though most of the elite guys, you get a decade plus out of those type of players.
10:07But, like, until they find that guy, I feel like the Browns are going to spin their wheels in mud.
10:12And they're either going to be really, really bad or they're going to be like where the Pittsburgh Steelers are
10:17right now.
10:17Just good enough to make the playoffs, but you're not going anywhere in the playoffs.
10:21And obviously that would be an improvement, right?
10:24But, you know, who really does want that too, right?
10:26The goal is to compete for and win a Super Bowl.
10:28I don't mean to bicker with you, though, Daryl, but I have to fire back with this.
10:31I mean, are we just caught chasing a dragon here?
10:34How many great quarterbacks are really in the league?
10:36Yeah, I know.
10:37Well, I mean.
10:38Rise above everything and keep a franchise afloat.
10:41Yeah, I mean, look, you know, I think the elites are Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen.
10:48I'm going to put Joe Burrow in there.
10:51He didn't go to the playoffs last year.
10:52I know, but not his – hey, Joe Burrow don't play defense.
10:58You know what I mean?
10:59Well, he made sure they kept Trey Hendrickson around another year.
11:02Yeah, I know.
11:03He made sure – they could have got a defense, but he wanted to make sure Tee Higgins was still
11:07with them.
11:07No, I know.
11:08But what I'm saying is, you know, we've had – how many – Limey, you have the list.
11:1367 or whatever it was last year.
11:15Do we not believe we're at a dearth of great elite quarterback play right now in the NFL for a
11:21multitude of reasons?
11:22And here we are going, well, we've got to have the quarterback.
11:23We've got to have the quarterback.
11:24And, yeah, I've been a subscriber of it too, but it's like, is that quarterback out there?
11:27I mean, good God, we thought there was going to be six this last year.
11:30That market dried up.
11:31There was one in the first round that everybody was comfortable with taking.
11:34And then the other one just became a big fight.
11:36It goes back to, you know, the Baker wars that we had, right?
11:40I mean, it starts with, first of all, are you even available to play every Sunday?
11:43Okay, at least Baker was there available to play every Sunday, right?
11:46I mean, he started more games – more consecutive games, I should say, for the Browns.
11:51You have to go all the way back to Brian Sipe the last time you had a quarterback start that
11:56many consecutive games for the Browns.
11:58I mean, that right there, right?
12:00So it starts there.
12:01Okay, are you available?
12:02Then we can get into how good you are.
12:04And unfortunately, we can't get past here in Cleveland, are you even available?
12:09Because the Browns need two, three, four, five quarterbacks just to get through the schedule.
12:15So, I mean, I think Kevin Stefanski had 13 different starting quarterbacks in his time here as head coach.
12:23And that includes after trading for one and giving him a record fully guaranteed $230 million contract.
12:28So, it starts with, can you just be in one piece and available to show up every Sunday at 1
12:35o'clock?
12:37All right, Daryl, quickly to basketball.
12:40It seems like everybody has a different opinion on what to do to try to take the next step.
12:45But the more and more I hear people, they just say Mobley and Donovan aren't good enough.
12:50So what are the Cavs supposed to do when they're probably one of the top seven teams in the NBA,
12:54but doesn't seem like there's any obvious moves to become a better basketball team?
12:58Well, they're a top four team in the NBA, but I feel like they're a distant fourth compared to the
13:03three teams that remain, okay?
13:07And not much has changed over the last four years.
13:10They're clearly not good enough to be a competitor for the NBA championship.
13:15They're good enough to win a lot of games in the regular season and advance in the postseason, right?
13:20So, I don't think the two big things works.
13:23I've said that for years.
13:24I think that they need to move one of them.
13:29Evan Mobley, obviously, is the most valuable player you have to move.
13:33Jared Allen's contract, I feel like, is good enough to move.
13:39It's clear they're not moving off Donovan.
13:42They're not moving off James Harden.
13:43So, you're stuck with that.
13:46And, you know, I mean, if James Harden does what has been reported in the net, he's going to sign
13:53a team-friendly contract that's going to get them under that second apron and give them the flexibility to do
13:59some roster maneuvering this offseason okay.
14:01He's certainly not a $50 million-a-year player anymore, based on what I saw in the playoffs.
14:07But he won't be.
14:08He's taking a dramatic cut from that.
14:10Yeah.
14:10So, you're going to have two ball-dominant guards.
14:13And my frustration has been that they inconsistently feed the bigs.
14:19The bigs are either just kind of cleaning up a mess, or it's very sporadic when they get actually involved
14:26offensively and become a centerpiece.
14:30I think both Jared Allen and Evan Mobley were underutilized in that Eastern Conference final series.
14:36That's on Kenny Atkinson.
14:37That's on, you know, the players as well.
14:40But I don't think that Jared and Evan work.
14:43I've said that for years, and I think they're probably going to have to move off one of them.
14:47Now, do you trade Evan for Giannis?
14:49Does that get you any closer?
14:51I don't know.
14:51Giannis has been hurt the last couple years, and he's on the wrong side of 30.
14:55So, there's some tough decisions that Kobe Altman's going to have to make this offseason.
14:59Daryl, we thank you very much for the time.
15:02Blessings to you and yours, and we'll talk to you again next week.
15:04Awesome stuff.
15:05You bet, guys.
15:06Have a great weekend.
15:07I mean that, too.
15:08That almost got into a vicious debate.
