00:01minicamp starts today oh i got ridiculed for something i said about chador sanders yesterday
00:05can you believe that tone get to that coming up at 720 let's go to brian baldinger right now
00:09odyssey nfl analyst he joins us right now on the wise heart right we make a right call call right
00:14hotline brian good morning or i should say good afternoon to you out there uh yes it's uh six
00:21o'clock here in uh bangkok right now um kind of winding down a day stuck in traffic like everybody
00:28else here but uh good to be with you man good to talk some football with the browns i am
00:32so thrilled
00:33you made time for us to do this and now all i want to do is talk to you about
00:36thailand but i will get
00:37to that coming up in a bit i know you're a football guy and we have to ask you football
00:40questions
00:42uh for this for this season if you were todd munkin as of right now i know you're just dropping
00:49in
00:50maybe it's an unfair question i gotta ask who do you think you would pick as your starting quarterback
00:54oh i mean between deshaun and shador yes sir i mean i honestly don't know i mean i don't know
01:00because i haven't seen deshaun play football in two years so i don't know what he looks like i don't
01:04know oh if he's accurate if he understands the offer i mean i don't know you know it's just it's
01:10kind of an incomplete question if the question's fair i get it but it's just kind of incomplete
01:14since we just haven't seen him on the field you know and so i don't know if he can ever
01:19find uh you
01:20know the the rhythm or the production that made him you know a great prospect and a good player
01:27and so i don't know where he's at and then shador um i thought he showed some signs last year
01:33but
01:34you know i don't think he's got a great arm i don't think he's a great athlete but that's okay
01:39there's
01:39been plenty of guys that have been successful without those qualities in this league you know you
01:44could be super accurate you can read defenses quickly you can uh go through progressions you know
01:49like a you know like a ginsu knife and get the ball to the open guys and so you know
01:55i don't know
01:56that we saw enough of them last year to determine that that's why they've got a battle going on right
02:00now but to answer your question i i i don't i don't know what to think right now it's just
02:05because
02:05of how incomplete deshaun watson has been you know we've been saying baldy throughout at least some of
02:12us that the tie should go to the younger dude um just because deshaun watson's had so many injuries
02:20he just hasn't been good as a brown it's been years like five six years since he's played at the
02:26level
02:26that you know everybody thought he was going to be one of the great ones in the nfl so are
02:31you aligned
02:32with that or does todd munkin owe it to the locker room to play the better guy you got to
02:37play the
02:37better guy i mean you can't never lie to your team the team will know just watching them day in
02:43day
02:43out in practice they're going to know who you know the best the guy that can lead the best they're
02:49going to know it um and so if it's a true competition where guys are rotating in and
02:55shador never had that last year uh you know with kevin's defense he i was out there at practice last
02:59year he he wasn't given an opportunity to win any job last year but if it's if it's a true
03:04competition
03:05then you're going to split the reps with the number ones you're going to rotate like i think
03:09they are uh with the number one offense and to see who can kind of lead and produce the most
03:14doesn't
03:15even if you have uh the best competition and with all the rules and you know even reps and all
03:21that
03:21kind of stuff guys still make wrong decisions all the time in these quarterback battles you know
03:26and sometimes you have to get to this you got to get to the middle of september end of september
03:30before you even know sometimes by just watching how productive somebody is brian boatinger joining
03:37us on a c nfl insider how do you think the browns fared in the miles trade and would you
03:42have traded
03:42miles garrett if you were the cleveland browns um i wouldn't have traded him um because you know he
03:49was under contract he was affordable he's coming off his best season ever but i like jared verse the
03:54player i just don't think they got enough for miles garrett he's the most dominant defensive player
03:59we've seen since reggie white and bruce smith and i just thought you know we've seen receivers get
04:04two first round picks and more you know and this is way better than any receiver that's ever been
04:09traded uh joey galloway you know i mean just go through the list of guys that have been traded for
04:14first round picks i didn't think they got enough and so that that that you know whatever andrew
04:19berry was looking for or whatever the browns were looking for i mean i i would have thought they
04:24could have done better than what they did well that's interesting baldy because like the
04:29analytics people have gone in on the value they have their charts and their numbers and what i was
04:35i was surprised to see as much as i love jared verse and i'm excited that they got somebody who
04:40can come
04:40in immediately and play at a very high level and and maybe has even a a ceiling that he hasn't
04:45even
04:46gotten close to touching yet at the same time they seem to love the value of for for miles garrett
04:52in
04:52this trade well i mean jared verse a good player i mean you know that he did he's been productive
04:59he's been healthy he's you talk to offensive tackles that played against him he's got as much
05:04power it's just about anybody in this business outside of miles garrett um you know the sack
05:10numbers he had eight and a half including the one that he had in in the playoffs last year but
05:15you
05:15know kobe turner like he's helping other guys you know get sack numbers too i mean kobe turner's
05:20had over 20 sacks in his first three years in this league and jared's helped him the last two years
05:24so he's winning he's winning his battles uh on a regular basis and you know he plays the game the
05:31right way he plays the game with real violence and uh he plays hard he plays the run as well
05:36as you
05:37know most guys in this league can play the run so they're getting a great player they're getting a
05:41first round pick i just thought they could have gotten more picks um you know they're getting
05:45jared verse on a rookie contract he's played two years here um you know i mean i think that's a
05:51great player i'm sure that there's nobody else on the rams team that they would have taken beside him
05:56when i heard you know some of the the the band the bartering that was going on with the philadelphia
06:02eagles they wanted jalen carter and the eagles weren't ready to give up jalen carter to get miles
06:07garrett and so you know the rams to give up jared verse they've got other defensive ends there byron
06:12young and you know some of the guys that they have there that have been really good players
06:15so to get miles right there they feel like um you know the the picks are expendable uh they're
06:22they're loading up uh you know in an arms race right here to go win it all and so you
06:27know they
06:27got i thought i got i thought they got the better of the deal what conversation are general managers
06:33having yesterday and today about brendan soresby
06:39uh well i mean you've seen you know teams already back out of wanting to play texas tech
06:44they feel like you know when you make those type of violations the way soresby has you know you're
06:50betting on your team you're betting on the game like you know in any other sport you'd be kicked
06:55out of the sport and so they're making a strong stance right now about what he's doing you know texas
07:01tech has you know they've got backing right there in that program that almost no other program in the
07:08country has as far as finances you know who's financing this thing but to see the the ncaa
07:15allow him to to go play after the violations that he's guilty of i mean it's kind of shocking
07:21you know that you would allow somebody like like that to play do you think there's nfl owners who are
07:27seeing this story and i know we'll have to get more information and he's going to get the play
07:32and we'll see how many games and all that other stuff but do you think there's nfl owners who are
07:36going nope not interested if he comes out in 27 we are not taking him i think there's probably some
07:42guys that are having that conversation but that's that's down the road we got to see what kind of
07:46player he is like is he a real prospect is he you know i mean we saw quarterbacks coming to
07:51the
07:52draft this year garrett newsmeyer different guys that um you know were thought of much higher
07:58um in their draft status a year ago and then they didn't have good seasons and their draft stock fell
08:05we got to see what he plays like and you know and before we i haven't evaluated the guy so
08:10i mean i
08:11know who he is uh like everybody else but i haven't really evaluated him but we got to see
08:15uh you know what kind of year he has and you know what kind of talent there is and you
08:21know because
08:21the talent will if the talent is supreme the way say fernando mendoza's was this year and he plays
08:27at that kind of level then a lot of his uh indiscretions will be overlooked for sure
08:34well you said that and that's that's the opportune terminology they're overlooked because obviously nfl
08:40teams consistently overlook some of the worst behavior some of the bigger character issues but yet
08:47we're grappling with this now omnipresent gambling thing because every every kid seems like this is
08:55being shoved down their throat in one way or another we're just as guilty as anybody we talk about you
09:00know gambling a ton so how how do they grapple with that knowing that a lot of this is so
09:07new
09:09yeah well how does college football grapple with anything at this state you know i mean whether
09:14it's nil money or you know i mean it's just it's it's you know nobody has really figured out what's
09:19the best way to kind of reel this thing in right now i mean nobody's staying at any program everybody's
09:24just picking up and leaving and uh you know these guys are being recruited during the season like
09:30there's no doesn't seem like there's any guardrails to anything in college football and so i don't know how
09:35they grapple with the gambling aspect but if if he's not going to be uh suspended and if he can
09:42play
09:42and he can get a six year of eligibility and all the stuff that's happening like is any of this
09:47going
09:47to stop any other kid from doing it or is it only going to encourage uh you know more kids
09:53to you know
09:54to to you know to to go out there and gamble on some of these games that there's no way
09:59any athlete
10:00should be able to do that i mean it's just a complete conflict of interest i work for the nfl
10:04like
10:04when the super bowl was in las vegas two years ago they didn't even want me walking through a casino
10:10and every hotel has a casino you know like i mean there's just certain things i know that i'm not
10:16permitted to do i can never go into a sports book they they don't want any of their employees having
10:22any sort of questions about a conflict of interest especially when you look at um all the the feedback
10:28online on college and pro games and how fans real fans think like some of these games are being
10:35thrown or you know i mean it's just it's it's a terrible state that we're in right now with the
10:40gambling component yet there's so much money to be taken from these gambling operations that these
10:45people can't really draw the line right now and that's that's where it's really very blurred i got
10:51a real quick two-parter here first parter which is quick how good do you think the bronze quarterback
10:55room is i imagine you don't think it's very good but i don't want to put words in your mouth
11:01well it's not joe burrow you know it's not lamar jackson that's the division you're in
11:05it's not aaron rogers so i mean if you put them just in the division you probably put them
11:10on the ground floor but i don't want to say what chador or any of these guys can do with
11:15a much better
11:15roster and a seemingly a pretty good offensive minded coach you know in there right now i'd like to i
11:21like
11:21with a better talent than what they had a year ago i'd like to see these guys go operate but
11:25i
11:25don't think anybody would put them in the category of joe or lamar at this point because you got some
11:30really i i'm really excited about a couple of the pups that they got i mean from last year's draft
11:35and
11:35this year's draft now we'll see what this year's draft does but you know i also don't like brian the
11:41conversation about you know maybe todd monk and being a one-and-done guy so how do you watch the
11:46browns this year how do you evaluate the browns knowing that yeah probably there's gonna they're gonna
11:50stack some losses like is it okay as long as the quarterback room doesn't play well if everybody
11:56else plays well will they still get where they need to go to get that qb it's a tough needle
12:01thread
12:01well i'm like i i don't think that you can just you know look at this season independent of what
12:06the
12:07quarterbacks are doing you know i mean i think todd monkett is here regardless uh i don't think you're
12:11going to make the move that they did stefanski was there for a long time i don't think you're making
12:15the move and bringing todd monkett in for a one-and-done deal i don't believe that at all i
12:20think
12:20todd's been a pretty proven good coach in college and in the nfl and i i think he needs time
12:27to kind
12:28of build this roster it's a young roster and so uh you never know uh in this business right now
12:34if you
12:35get decent quarterback play can you win some games you know can you be uh competitive i mean i think
12:41that's what you're looking for you're looking to see the difference that this coach is making whether
12:46it's in how they conduct their business how well prepared they look on sundays how competitive they
12:52are i mean there's a lot of parameters that i think you got to really look at todd monkett with
12:57here in
12:58this year and i don't think that always shows up the wins and losses but i have a feeling they're
13:03going to win some games because defensively i think they're going to still be very good they rebuilt the
13:07offense line how quickly i mean it's five new starters i haven't i don't know the last time i've seen
13:11five new starters on an offensive line in this league and so somebody said 1976 brian was the
13:18year i think that was the last year it happened 76 thank you that's a good nugget i mean that's
13:2350
13:23years i've never like i said like i mean i do this every day i i can't remember a team
13:29changing five
13:30offense linemen out now that doesn't happen those guys don't build chemistry and start you know blocking
13:36for the backs they have and protecting the quarterback um without some level of growing
13:42pains there and so how does that come about right now i'm i'm anxious to kind of watch just that
13:48development especially in light of you know the joel batonios and wyattellers you know just real
13:53uh pillars in that cleveland brown locker room for a long long time that aren't there anymore so i
13:59want to see like who takes who take charge up front and how quickly it comes together brian does
14:06anybody care about the nfl where you are right now in thailand no nobody uh the language is impossible
14:12there's 44 letters in the alphabet um i'm trying to pronounce the same river that runs right through
14:18the heart of bangkok all day long and i still don't have it uh and i don't think there is
14:23a muay thai
14:23you know fight though on saturday night that i'm going to be at and there's a lot of interest for
14:28that muay thai fight and so uh i can't wait to get in the ring and see what happens you
14:33are a man
14:34about the world uh can i just give you one request um i know that they have cobra shows in
14:40thailand

14:46just get
14:47you at a cobra show in thailand well i was going to ride an elephant tomorrow at some point i
14:52was hoping
14:52to be able to do that you know wade into a river you know with the elephant but if there's
14:57a cobra

15:28different parts it's bigger than you think thailand yeah oh yeah 11 hours between places yeah because
15:35because that is that is way more tropical down there than where he is all right i gotta look that
15:39up all
15:40right thank you very much to brian baldinger even though he can no longer hear us we hung up on
