00:00can i thank you guys enough for the content this week it's the first week of june where nothing
00:05really happens in sports and we were trying to bridge the nba finals and the munkin man just
00:10spun this forward the next another day or two well and he also i mean in the process of it
00:15uh
00:15and we'll get to some of the quarterback stuff obviously but uh he can't make up his mind with
00:19quarterbacks now oh i love that and he's as vocal as he possibly can be and chador did have a
00:23really
00:23nice day by all accounts on the practice field today he's excited to meet dion sanders yeah
00:28that was great uh and there's yeah and again even with the verse stuff verse fits like a glove i
00:33knew we'd say nice things about verse okay i just kind of i appreciated that he didn't want to just
00:38sit there and wax poetic on miles because he didn't know miles the way the fans do it would have
00:42been
00:42disingenuous if he just talked about how great he was for the organization and how important he was
00:46for the organization and all these other things he wasn't important to munkin he never met munkin i
00:51think that was the most apparent thing is that uh todd is very happy that the miles melodrama
00:58is over he is excited about jared verse and he is excited to not have to talk about miles garrett
01:04and their lack of relationship ever again because he knew every time he had to speak he was just lying
01:08okay and he knew he's not a very good liar because again these guys are head coaches they're not actors
01:12they don't know how to lie this is why rutenberg seemed like it was the biggest giveaway you'd ever
01:16heard in your life they don't know what they're doing in trying to lie they're just coaches and so
01:20uh when it comes down to it yeah i i think munkin is satisfied to be done lying to everybody
01:26about
01:26what's going on with miles garrett i do think it's funny when a head coach says very excited about
01:30jared verse and and the draft picks you can tell he's like i gotta cover all that we got for
01:35miles
01:35i said he fits us like a glove he said a world of upside these are just some of the
01:40phrases that i
01:41wrote down that he used and probably the one that made me giggle was the who when talking about you
01:47know jared verse and his kind of is it was jared excited to be here i think was something close
01:52to
01:52the question he said who doesn't want to be wanted we wanted him yeah and i was just like
01:58man todd munkin is a damn vibe well and at one point uh he he started just rattling off players
02:03names he sounded like the drunk guy at the bar trying to convince his buddy that the browns are
02:07going to be good he's like no we have schwezinger we have and he just started naming players
02:11the difference is he got the names right yeah he didn't the drunk caller that calls in here is at
02:16the bar well you know swissinger you got uh malik collins i think is his name and 75 iterations of
02:25sanders uh so some of the actual like things that one beyond just the jared verse part of this uh
02:31obviously everyone's going to react to the quarterback stuff uh spencer fano being with the the ones
02:36yesterday and today that's the nice development at the left tackle spot in particular too like they're
02:41not they're not you know moving them around or doing anything funny that way they're doing what they
02:45said they would do with him and uh he also went on to say and i actually this is the
02:48kind of like
02:49nitty-gritty football stuff that i do like to hear you know obviously he was asked kind of about
02:54well we know you want to get your quarterback done as soon as possibly but do you feel the same
02:58way
02:58about the offensive line and he basically was like i treat them the same way i'd love to have my
03:03five
03:04starting offensive linemen chosen because the earlier we get to that the better chance of continuity
03:08also said he's a lot more confident in that than he is making the quarterback decision now
03:12you have been and i i have been as well to some degree that it had been feeling fatalistic with
03:19some of the messaging from reports that we had gotten out there about to sean uh todd munkin said
03:24every day i lean one way or the other with a quarterback spot you are the shistan on the show
03:30how do we
03:31feel about uh what the messaging about the quarterback spot is is munkin as reactionary as the fans on social
03:37media is that is that what this is because by all accounts today and this is not just fans on
03:41social
03:42media this is people that are there i already talked to coach uh coach riz we've been going
03:45back and forth he basically said to sean was awful today and jador sanders was awesome today and like
03:50that's in a nutshell to hear in a nutshell that's what it was he had the best pass of the
03:53day by far
03:54the touchdown to isaiah bond he also had a really nice pass and a nice grab by jerry judy that
03:58was a
03:58touchdown as well and so it seemed like shador had a really really nice day and it seemed like
04:04deshaun really struggled deshaun didn't really have uh i guess great instincts out there you get
04:09a lot of pressure on him this is what i've told you before with deshaun all the time like when
04:12it
04:12comes to decision making which with deshaun i just think it's just it's just it's poor and uh and so
04:18yeah he didn't look good today so oh so you asked something about you know is is todd munkin like
04:23people
04:23on social media where you're back and forth every day you're flip flopping back and forth that's exactly
04:28how i want him to handle this situation now it's not how i want him to be in training camp
04:33it's
04:33certainly not how i want him to be in the regular season but like in mini camps in in voluntary
04:40mini
04:40camps when you're trying to suss it out that yeah that's what i want to see out of you i
04:45want to see
04:45you say man shador did look good today well at least he's not did look good yesterday yes and he's
04:51not
04:51just a slave to what his previous ideas are you know and i feel like that's where sometimes coaches
04:55fall in problems and they end up in a spot you don't want to be in as if you're just
04:59like well i already
04:59made up my mind deshaun's winning this thing and i got no room for moving off that at all like
05:04that's
05:04not what munkin sounded like today at all that sounds like a guy that he's he's vacillating between
05:09the two quarterbacks consistently because on some days shador is looking good on some days shador is
05:13looking bad and vice versa now he did save himself and i don't know if this is a tell but
05:18he he went
05:18talking about how good shador has come on recently yeah he then saved himself and was like it would
05:24and deshaun looked good today and i was like oh i know that i know what that that might be
05:28the one
05:28fib that you talked about today of trying to make sure you shoot in deshaun on that it was a
05:33great
05:33defensive day by all accounts from everyone that was out there in general it was a great defensive
05:38day i couldn't tell if zach jackson was being facetious or not where he said no five mini camp
05:42coach riz said defense won the day uh but in deshaun specifically he said had some accuracy issues
05:47timing was off and then obviously referenced how great shador looked and thought he was very good today
05:52and thought he was way sharper than watson was another player that we got some uh love on here
05:56uh isaiah bond but yeah that was the that was the play of the day by all accounts that was
06:00the play
06:00of the day well but munkin said he's come on the last week and and said you know he still
06:04i don't know
06:05if he said project but he's still developmental uh that would be good to hear like i i honestly don't
06:10give a rat rat's patoot who i don't know why i said rat's patoot i'm not a 70 year old
06:14midwest house mom
06:16um i don't give a rat's patoot i just didn't want to say the a word and i don't even
06:20know why i just
06:20called it the a word i said all the damn time and i just said dang what in the almost
06:26said something
06:26much worse yeah uh but you don't have to show us that you know how to curse it's okay you
06:30know what
06:31now i do i believe you yeah now i do yeah not only is mack gonna have to really sweat
06:36it out when
06:36munkins at the podium now when your boy nicky dubs us here but i don't care who shows up from
06:42that
06:42wide receiver room i just need two guys can prove they can play you get two guys and fan and
06:47puts up what
06:48he did close to last year that's going to be the quarterback's best friend did have a concepcion
06:52drop that was highlighted i did not talk to that uh with coach riz he's going to turn it around
06:57but
06:57i did see one of those videos floating around today yeah apparently it's a really good defensive day
07:02uh but i just need the offense to show some life and it showed some life and and but this
07:05is it
07:05munkins commenting on it and the idea that every day he leans one way or another with quarterbacks
07:10everyone i don't know why everyone thought that he was going to have this thing settled very easily i
07:14know why it's because he told us he would but obviously this is becoming harder for him and i
07:19don't know that he's going to have it wrapped up as quickly as people thought i don't think it would
07:22be wrong if you listened to todd munkin talk about jared verse and he wants to be here and he
07:29made an
07:29effort to be here i don't hate it if someone maybe takes that as maybe a little shade at miles
07:35oh i think a lot of people did yes right i think that was a resounding thought out of this
07:39is that
07:40uh munkin his he was pissed that miles did all this and he had to go through with it and
07:44and then
07:44in the meanwhile he reaps zero of the benefits of miles like a you know at least when miles is
07:50being
07:50miles past coaches like kevin sofanski for instance at least got to see him you know break a sack record
07:55and at least you know wreck havoc on sunday munkin had to go through three months of questions about
08:00where's miles what's going on with miles to then get zero of the payoff it's kind of like us if
08:05we got
08:06fired right before the season got started and we had this conversation yes and worked an
08:09off season doing all sorts of like summer radio summer radio summer topic radio and you're like
08:15man out of training camp for like all the dog days of summer it's a long slog but you know
08:20what the
08:20games are the big payoff the games are when it's going to be awesome and it's going to be great
08:24and
08:24then uh and then like no you're you're fired just go grab grab grab some bench like that's basically
08:28what happened to munkin gonna deal with all the nonsense that comes with miles and got zero the
08:33payoff and that i'd be pissed if i were him too so it's interesting like there were some football guy
08:37stuff we already mentioned the offensive line and trying to get that set as soon as possible he
08:41basically said i know who four of my five starters are and then it just comes you know who's the
08:46fifth
08:46guy and how do we organize it uh but even the quarterbacks and talk about that the development
08:51of isaiah bond i i thought the most interesting thing was todd talking about jared verse switching to
08:58this kind of even front four three defense the wide nine which again we're still assuming
09:04and and and how verse is played in a three four defense more as a stand-up linebacker and it's
09:11funny the more tape that i've watched to verse they did put him on the defensive line a fair amount
09:16so it's not like he was like dropping into coverage every other play that gives me some hope that this
09:22is maybe not the concern that i'm concerned that it could be but i do think it's a big question
09:28but
09:28munkin's answer was effectively well you know he used to have to do like 10 things now he's just
09:34going to put his hand in the dirt and go yeah i mean it should set up better for him
09:37from that
09:38perspective obviously now i i think something that would uh go against him maybe if we're just going
09:42to do a devil's advocate type thing is uh where where he's playing when he's playing in the situational
09:48time of the games right like so like one thing i i saw uh some prognosticators estimating that miles
09:53garrett is going to have 75 more sack opportunities this year like 75 more snaps where it's legitimately
09:59because going from the browns to the rams and playing in more third and sevens they played in
10:03the second most amount of third and sevens than anybody in the nfl last year the fact that they're
10:07going to be winning games in the fourth quarter instead of behind in games 75 is the number that
10:11they came up with for miles garrett like first probably gonna take a hit in that department
10:15yeah like like you're not you're just not going to have as many close games as many games where
10:19you're leading as many games where you get the opportunities to put up the big time sack numbers
10:23now with this being said mike floria was on with the midday boys earlier today and talked about
10:29potential red flags with jared first i just wonder what the rams really think of verse the rams know
10:35him better than anyone they've had him for the last two years they don't think he's going to become
10:38miles garrett anytime soon they think 30 year old miles garrett is better right now than jared
10:42verse and they're willing to take miles garrett in a spot where he's never getting any better he's
10:46just going to begin to diminish over verse who is on the trajectory upward that i think is a coup
10:52for the browns assuming that verse is a guy who can blossom but i think if the rams thought that
10:58they wouldn't have let verse go they would have come up with some other way to get miles garrett
11:02so this is interesting because i you know usually mike floria annoys the living crap out of me
11:07i do think that some of the oh we really hated to give him up was pr crap right like
11:15you did you
11:16clearly didn't hate to give him up because you gave him up so like if if he was oh it
11:20was so tough it
11:21was so tough you wouldn't have done it now i think like i think maybe my rebuttal to florio is
11:27teams
11:28get this kind of stuff wrong all the time the panthers didn't want to pay brian burns i think it
11:34was 25 million dollars a year this happened after i left by the way so it wasn't like i followed
11:38this
11:38kind of a little remotely yeah and because he had never cracked the 10 sack mark and they were worried
11:45about whether he would be that guy and then they traded him to the giants for i think a second
11:50pick and a fourth round pick and i think it was a year later brian burns head over and had
11:56a career
11:56year and i think this year i think he had 15 sacks so you just don't know i think that
12:01the point is
12:02they want to win right now if jared verse becomes a top five pass rusher three years from now for
12:09them
12:09it might be three years too late yeah the way i looked at it was this was really hard for
12:13the
12:13rams but it was obvious because miles garrett's a much better football player right now and they
12:17have this two-year matthew stafford window but it doesn't it doesn't mean that they see something in
12:21jared verse that we need to be flagged and worried about i i just i for me it was pretty
12:27simple it was
12:27like all right jared verse can be a really good player it's just not in the timeline that they need
12:31right now like verse isn't wrecking a game yet doesn't mean he won't a couple years from now
12:36but he isn't wrecking a game yet and then the matthew stafford era they need to win right now
12:40so i'm not going to call it a red flag i'm going to call it a beige flag so if
12:45i had a beige flag
12:46about verse it's that he's he's going to be switching into a system that he's never played
12:50before in the nfl and although i think he can do it you don't know until you know yeah right
12:56that's
12:57the beige flag the rams willing willingness to trade him for miles garrett just seems a little
13:04common sense to me yeah i like that my beige flag on this whole thing because i agree it's not
13:09a red
13:09flag i just i worry about the idea that it seems like everyone's awesome with the rams yeah and i
13:15just it just it's one of those things like on the d line that's why when people are talking about
13:19not
13:19only adding miles garrett but if you can come back and have aaron donald make a return this might be
13:23the greatest defensive line ever assembled but like part of that is shoeless as good as he is at what
13:28he
13:28does and they just they find ways to make players out of just about anybody and like that's one of
13:32the concerns i would have so it's funny you say that because i think in this conversation i i
13:37understand the historical implications and if by the way if you're just joining us jared verse
13:41will be speaking to the cleveland media within likely the next 10 minutes uh it could happen
13:47literally the next five minutes so when it happens we are going to go out and hear jared
13:51versus introductory press conference with the cleveland media but to reel this back in
13:56um i i understand the historical thing which is that the browns didn't do a good enough job at
14:01putting defensive line talent around miles garrett but the people that were talking about how much
14:06he's upgrading going from this situation to that situation i think slept on how good
14:13they've actually developed the pieces around him uh mason graham and malik collins gave miles
14:18pressure this last year that he's never had up the middle and that allowed him to reach his sack
14:23record uh alex wright and isaiah mcguire both are two guys who are starting caliber defensive linemen
14:29if you look at the kind of advanced metrics so it's funny while i agree it makes sense while miles
14:35is gone everything's going to kind of change a little bit here i i i kind of think versus still
14:40walking into a situation where there's enough talent around him specifically up the middle that
14:45i think he should still have chances to eat even if it's not the way he did in los angeles
14:49that's
14:49where we have to wonder if it was like a one hand washing the other type situation you know if
14:53like
14:53if mason graham had as good of a year as he did last year and he didn't blow anybody out
14:56of the water
14:57he was fine uh but was that was that because miles was getting double teamed and miles was
15:01having all the pressure on himself and even in malik collins has never looked that good that was
15:06insane before he got injured that was a sensational year by him he was trending to have an all-time
15:10season for himself and the year prior he was left for dead like so like is that is that because
15:15he was working with miles or did he find some way to turn a corner i also think we i'll
15:20come back to
15:21and this is the this is the key where rutenberg really has to just not screw it up i think
15:26the
15:26system it's a really good system and i know the wide nine has its has its drawbacks which is
15:32if you don't hold your gaps right you can really get gashed against the runner we saw that
15:37at different points not consistently but at different points with the browns over the last three years
15:42and now you don't have jim schwartz to fix that i think having a guy that has mastered the system
15:47i think there is a difference there but man i really like the system because it does the thing
15:54that i think you should do with a defensive line it allows players to pin their ear back and just
15:58play
15:59football it's the the best thing i've heard of munkin by the way offensively is he's like we're
16:03gonna remove all the crap and we just want these guys to play fast every coach that i think knows
16:09there's salt unless it's like a shanahan who has such a specialized system right but every coach
16:14that i really think the world of their whole thing is how do we get the players to stop thinking
16:19and
16:19play and that's what i think munkin's gonna do for the offense but i think that's been the beauty of
16:24the jim schwartz defense if if mike rutenberg can just keep that and keep that part of the wide nine
16:30are we are we being too rosy when it comes to verse now i feel like i've almost gone the
16:33other
16:33direction i'm gonna be accused of being the guy that uh as is as everyone's like oh no you guys
16:38don't know how good of a football player he is like everyone knows how good of a football player
16:41he is it he is but if we've gone too far have i gone too far in the other direction
16:45now with some
16:46of my concerns no no i i think listen one it is i think it's pretty natural when everybody does
16:52the
16:53fluff job that has happened on all sides of this for your and my collective bs meters to go off
16:58uh so i i think that's just a natural reaction to what has been overly rosy kind of analysis of
17:05this
17:05that said like my threshold for jared verse and i understand that i'm speaking to a traditional
17:11stat i'm not going to then go through a bunch of analytical stats as well my bar is the same
17:16thing
17:16he did last year seven and a half to eight sacks this year with this defensive line will be a
17:21significant success for jared verse because of the base flag of switching defenses and all the
17:25other stuff we've done yeah i just i feel like most fans are they're thinking now double digits or
17:29less and it's i just think that's unrealistic i agree i maybe i'm just not holding him enough to
17:33to a high enough standard i i think so much of this trade was about him but so much of
17:37it
17:37was about the picks as well and so i just i just don't put as much on him in all
17:41this i look at it
17:42as like the collective number of sacks for the team like i i think you still need to be for
17:47this team to
17:48do anything remotely interesting and it still might not be enough you need to be top five to top 10
17:54in sacks and so that is that that to me is when you when you go from miles scared to
18:01jared verse
18:03you're saying we we have the depth we are four deep at edge rusher maybe five deep if uh fauna
18:09works out
18:09and i still don't know they have enough depth up the middle just real quick but if you've got the
18:14depth you can still in the aggregate get to the sack numbers you need yeah what's interesting a couple
18:19years ago they had a lot of pressures and not as many sacks that obviously flipped a little bit
18:23last year uh with miles having so it's you know such a big season and then collins before he got
18:27injured it's just it'll be interesting to see what exactly they do and i'm interested to find out
18:32how much miles presence really did make a lot of the guys last year shine
