00:00All right, let's welcome in Daniel Oyafusi.
00:02He joins us on the Wise Heart Right, We Make It Right,
00:04called Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:05Daniel, thank you for joining us today.
00:07Is Shador Sanders going to be the Week 1 starter?
00:09Daniel, go!
00:11Hey, I think he's putting up a good fight.
00:14You know, we've all talked about this timeline
00:17of the end of mandatory mini-camp
00:19where Tom Monken will make a decision.
00:21But hey, if you go by his comments this week,
00:24he thinks he's got two starting-level quarterbacks.
00:26And he said he can't guarantee that
00:28he's going to have a defined depth chart
00:30or a clear QB1 entering training camp.
00:33So the more he talks about it,
00:35like I think he's always said that,
00:37you know, the end of mandatory mini-camp was ideal
00:39to really have a clear QB1,
00:42but he was never going to rush into a decision.
00:44And again, if you go by his comments this week,
00:46I think this is definitely something
00:48that could potentially extend into training camp
00:52in late July and August.
00:53Is it possible, or do you believe, Daniel,
00:55that the Miles Garrett trade
00:58actually maybe changed the QB race?
01:02I don't think so,
01:03especially after hearing Andrew Barry
01:06talk about his perspective about this team,
01:09both short and long-term.
01:10I think that the notion that the Browns
01:14are tanking now or outright stripping the roster down
01:17and rebuilding,
01:18he pushed back on that and added to the fact
01:20that most teams, when they trade a star player,
01:23anybody in Miles' caliber,
01:25like they're just getting a bunch of picks and assets.
01:27But like the Browns weren't going to do this deal
01:30without Jared Burris
01:30because they think that it still allows them
01:32to play defense at an elite level.
01:34So I don't think that the Miles trade necessarily,
01:39I don't think it's really adjusted
01:40maybe their short-term thinking.
01:42Although Barry did say that,
01:44like if he knew that they were going to do this months ago,
01:46he definitely would have, you know,
01:48gone about the offseason in a different way.
01:50But I don't think it impacts the QB race
01:52or how they see the quarterback situation right now.
01:57Daniel, you know, we do talk radio for a living,
01:59so we've got to do this every day,
02:01regardless of whether something happens or not.
02:04So are we overreacting on a daily basis
02:06to what happens in OTAs,
02:08especially when we get reports that,
02:11hey, all of a sudden,
02:13more reps there for, you know,
02:16the guy that we all thought was going to be number two
02:18in this quarterback race in Shador Sanders.
02:20And we all saw the past Isaiah Bond.
02:23Therefore, now there's a new number one in town.
02:26Oh, yeah, we are absolutely overreacting
02:29to the weekly OTAs.
02:32And I was just thinking about it recently.
02:35The media has only seen four of these practices.
02:38Like, I mean, when the entire team,
02:40or, you know, the team has been outside of rookie minicamp,
02:42like, they've had about a dozen of these now,
02:45and we've seen a third of them, you know.
02:49And the coaches say that when we're not there,
02:51like, they're splitting it pretty dead even.
02:53Like, there's days where we've been there,
02:55and Shador has taken a good amount of the first-team reps,
02:58or he's led the first-team offense.
02:59And there's days where we've been out there,
03:01and, you know, Deshaun is leading the first-team offense.
03:04So, like, we're honestly kind of putting a bit of an incomplete,
03:07like, picture of the battle,
03:09because we've only seen, like, a third of these practices.
03:12So, for all we know, like, somebody could be lightening it up
03:15on days that the media isn't there.
03:17But obviously, you know, like, it's part of the job.
03:19We've got to feed the beast.
03:20There's fan interest during this time of the year.
03:23And you've got to at least, you know,
03:24go off of what you see at those practices that are open.
03:29Well, Daniel, obviously, this is something that, you know,
03:32we're looking for any grain, any morsel that would lead us
03:37to seeing who might actually win this competition.
03:39We know what Todd Munkin has said time and time again about,
03:42yeah, be great in June to name a starting quarterback.
03:45Right now, if you had a gut feeling, do you think one will be named?
03:49Not who, but that one will be named.
03:51There will be a number one on the depth chart.
03:54Entering training camp?
03:55Yes.
03:56I do not think so.
03:58And I know, and really, I think it's,
04:00my view on it kind of shifted based on Munkin's comments this week.
04:04Like, and honestly, like, my personal opinion was that I thought that this
04:08end of mandatory mini camp deadline was always really kind of weird
04:11and arbitrary.
04:12Like, I never thought it made sense to name a starter,
04:16a starting quarterback without at least seeing them with, like,
04:19pads on consistently, without seeing them in joint practices,
04:21without seeing them in even, like, a preseason game.
04:24Like, Deshaun hasn't played in two years, so to name him the starter
04:27and to not see him, like, when the bullets are really flying live,
04:30I thought that was always, I thought that was, like,
04:33kind of borderline irresponsible.
04:35So I'm also, I'm honestly kind of glad that Munkin is, like,
04:40really, really emphasizing that, hey, like, I can't guarantee that a starter
04:44will be named entering training camp, because I really don't think that's even
04:47in the best interest of the team to name one so quickly.
04:50Has your win total changed for this season after the Miles Garrett trade?
04:56Um, yeah, you know, their win total, I mean, the over-under was set
05:00at, like, six and a half.
05:01I think, you know, before Monday I had them at, like, seven,
05:05I think post-Miles trade, I probably have them at, like, six.
05:10Like, there's no doubt that, there's no doubt that, hey,
05:13that's going to be a loss.
05:14Like, the defense is not going to get better from trading Miles.
05:17The question is, like, how much does it drop off with Miles gone now
05:22and Jared Vers fill in that role?
05:24Um, I think there were already fair questions about the defense
05:26even before the Miles trade with losing Jim Schwartz
05:29and replacing him with a first-time D.C. in Mike Rutenberg.
05:33Um, so, I mean, you can't, you can't increase the win total.
05:37Um, and I don't think anybody would say it necessarily stays the same
05:39with losing the two-time defensive player of the year.
05:43Daniel Yafusi joining us here on the show.
05:46Um, do you believe bringing in Jared Vers,
05:49we still have the best pass rusher in the AFC North?
05:55Hmm, that's a really good question.
05:57Um, I think you can make a legitimate argument.
06:00I think you can make a legitimate argument.
06:02Obviously, the Ravens acquired Trey Hendrickson,
06:04but he's, you know, 31, coming off, um, an injury
06:08that limited him for most of the year.
06:10Um, you know, uh, T.J. Watt, um, I think, you know,
06:14the, maybe the age has shown, you know,
06:17Miles definitely put some real, some real distance
06:19between, uh, uh, him and T.J.
06:22maybe the past two, three years.
06:23Um, and you have age there.
06:25So you can make a real argument that the Browns have
06:28the best pass rusher in the league,
06:30or season at the league in the AFC North
06:32with Jared Vers, a guy who's, you know,
06:3425, two-time pro bowler.
06:36They think he could reach another level.
06:38Um, I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't fight,
06:41I wouldn't fight you on that if you, if you said they did.
06:42What is, what do you think, Daniel Fousey
06:45joining us on the show, what do you think
06:47the future is for Denzel Ward?
06:49Near, far, could he be gone by the trade deadline?
06:53Yeah, that's really interesting.
06:54Um, I thought Denzel's future was all already,
06:58I mean, I always thought it was an interesting
07:00kind of, kind of subplot and footnote,
07:02you know, in the overarching offseason,
07:04because he doesn't have any guaranteed money left,
07:07I believe.
07:08Um, you know, uh, he has two years left,
07:11but, you know, not a lot of guaranteed money left.
07:14So if I was him, honestly, I'd probably be looking
07:16for a new deal with some more guarantees.
07:19Um, you know, he, he had made comments in the past
07:21about, hey, like, I'm here as long as Miles is here.
07:23And if he's gone, you know, I might have to rethink
07:26things.
07:26Um, you know, I'm sure he'll be asked about it
07:28at his celebrity softball game on Saturday
07:30and, um, probably next week when he arrives
07:32for mandatory minicamp.
07:33Um, you know, the Browns, you know, uh, you know,
07:36Jeremy Fowler reported that the Browns were a hard no,
07:39um, when it, when it came to trading Denzel right now.
07:43Um, but obviously like if the season goes a certain way
07:45and, you know, they're, they're one in seven
07:48or whatever, two in six, and you got teams calling
07:51and, you know, the season's going nowhere.
07:53Um, I think Andrew Barry, as he always does,
07:55will listen to calls and he'll, he'll listen very seriously.
07:58Um, cause again, this is not just about what's best
08:00for the team short-term, but what's best about
08:02the team long-term.
08:03And, and, you know, as much as we love Denzel Ward,
08:05he is turning, turning 30 with an injury history.
08:08Um, so you, you have to be, you know,
08:10kind of opportunistic about that.
08:11If the season doesn't go the way you expect.
08:13Same question, Grant Delpit.
08:15And the reason I ask is I didn't even think about him.
08:17And then Zach Jackson of the athletic
08:19brought him up a few days ago.
08:21So I kind of want to know your thought,
08:22your opinion on it.
08:23Could he be on the move?
08:26Yeah.
08:26I mean, Grant's a little younger.
08:29So I would think that like they, they probably,
08:31my, my guess is that they think of him maybe closer
08:34to that, like that young and up and coming core
08:37that they have right now.
08:38He's really like emerged as a leader.
08:40Um, but he also has a contract situation.
08:42That's, that's looming right now.
08:44Um, I think he, um, is a free agent after this year
08:48or the next, um, and he, he's up for a contract.
08:51He's definitely up for a contract extension.
08:53I mean, he's due for a raise.
08:54So that is again, another interesting subplot,
08:56but I would think that like Grant,
08:58just being a little younger,
08:59they would kind of definitely lump him a little closer
09:02to that young and up and coming core
09:04from the past few draft classes
09:05as maybe opposed to, uh, miles or even Denzel.
09:09Do you think Todd Munkin,
09:11when he interviewed for the job,
09:13when he got the job,
09:15do you think there was ever a thought
09:17that he would actually get to coach miles Garrett?
09:21Was he blindsided by this
09:22or was this kind of the thought all the way along?
09:26No, I mean, when he spoke at his introductory news conference,
09:30like we heard him say, I knew, you know,
09:33not infamous, infamously, but kind of notably famously,
09:35he said, I didn't take this job for Jim Schwartz.
09:37I took this job for miles Garrett and all the players.
09:40So I really do think that, you know, he, you know,
09:43anticipated that, uh, you know, miles Garrett
09:46would be on the team for his first year
09:47as an NFL head coach.
09:49Obviously, you know, things change,
09:50things change very quickly.
09:51Um, but I don't think that when he was interviewing,
09:54like that was, uh, that was in the back of his mind.
09:57Like, Hey, I might be taking this job
09:58and the best defensive player in the league,
09:59um, is going to be gone a couple months later.
10:02I know you've done extensive reporting on this
10:05and we saw this morning, um, Albert Breer
10:07had a little more about one final meeting
10:09between Jimmy Haslam and miles Garrett.
10:12Is this ending on good terms?
10:15We did see him smiling at OTAs yesterday
10:18in a new Rams uniform.
10:21I don't know if, I don't know if like good terms
10:24is the best way to put it.
10:25I think when Barry said it was bittersweet,
10:28I think that that was like the,
10:29I think that was the best way to describe it.
10:31Um, usually like, you know,
10:33just kind of talking to people close to miles,
10:35like he, especially over the past couple of years
10:37where he's had this kind of trade request ordeal
10:40and whatnot, like he, he really did want
10:42to make things work in Cleveland.
10:44Like he wanted to, you know, bring a winner to Cleveland
10:46and he like recognized like how much more it would mean
10:49to do it with this organization.
10:51But, um, there definitely was a frustration,
10:54you know, over, uh, the losing, you know,
10:56seven losing seasons in nine years in the NFL.
10:59Um, so obviously I think miles is extremely excited.
11:02Like you said, we saw that smile.
11:03He's definitely excited to join a winner.
11:05Um, but I think, you know, like he said,
11:07like it kind of tears at you to be able to leave,
11:08to have to leave because, um, you know,
11:11he had really grown up here, became a man here,
11:13um, you know, really put down roots here
11:15and he really wanted to win in here, win here.
11:17Um, but he was unable to do so.
11:19So it's like, yeah, like I, you know,
11:20I'm excited about the future,
11:21but I hate that.
11:22Like I couldn't make it work.
11:23Um, or we couldn't make it work where,
11:25where I was before.
11:27Do you think Daniel,
11:28that miles is already a first battle hall of fame
11:32or all that stuff?
11:32Is he about to enter a different stratosphere
11:35for the rest of the NFL world
11:37and in pop culture for the masses,
11:39the casual fan,
11:41is that about to happen with all the primetime games
11:44in the high stakes, high leverage games
11:45that the Rams are probably going to participate in?
11:49Yeah.
11:50I was just thinking about like what,
11:51what this move can mean for miles.
11:53Like really, it's like,
11:54it's really is a new era.
11:56Like he just turned 30.
11:57Um, you know,
11:58he kind of went through his twenties and in Cleveland
12:00and now he's entering his thirties,
12:02he's older, wiser, better, um, in LA.
12:05Like just think about, Hey,
12:06he had 23 sacks broke the sack record in Cleveland
12:08on a losing team.
12:09Like, what is he going to do for,
12:11you know, the Superbowl favorites?
12:12Um, and then off the field.
12:14Yeah.
12:14I mean, there's going to be,
12:15I mean, I've already seen,
12:16I don't know about you guys,
12:17but I've seen miles in like a ton of commercials
12:20this off season with Chloe Kim and stuff like that.
12:22Um, obviously, you know,
12:24he's with clutch and they do great with branding
12:26and partnerships and stuff like that.
12:28But yeah, I mean, I think, um, I mean,
12:30it could, I mean, like the sky,
12:32I think the sky's not everybody can keep
12:33that big of a secret.
12:35There's no way all those corporations
12:37could keep that big of a secret, Daniel.
12:40Well, yeah, yeah.
12:41But, um, you know,
12:43it's different in LA, man.
12:44It's different in LA for sure.
12:45Um, so I think, yeah,
12:47I think it's,
12:47it's going to be really, uh,
12:49cool for miles, you know,
12:50the on and off field exposure for sure.
12:52That comes with, um, you know,
12:54winning and then obviously being in that media market.
12:57I'm just a simple Midwestern man.
12:58I would have no clue.
12:59I apologize.
13:00Go ahead there, Tom.
13:01I think you'd have,
13:01I got spots for you in LA.
13:03I think you would,
13:03you would fit in very well.
13:05Maybe Manhattan Beach.
13:06We were going to,
13:07Liz and I,
13:07Liz was going to take me
13:08and then we ended up,
13:09the COVID hit and that was it.
13:11Well, God, well,
13:12we'll all go.
13:13Daniel,
13:13when you've been out to LA, right?
13:14We can show Ken a good time.
13:15Yeah, yeah.
13:16Yeah.
13:17I mean, I've been out to Westwood a little bit,
13:19you know, you know,
13:19some here and there.
13:21What the hell is Westwood?
13:22Is that, wait,
13:23is that,
13:23is that where UCLA is?
13:26Yeah.
13:26It'd be nuts if he were still there.
13:28I'll tell you that right now.
13:29All right, Daniel,
13:30thank you very much for the time.
13:31All the best.
13:32And you know,
13:32we'll have you again soon.
13:34Did you get a chance to talk to Dabo Sweeney?
13:35Well,
13:36why the hell do you let me try to wrap it up?
13:38And then you start asking more questions.
13:39We have all the old college coaches
13:40who are going to be hanging out.
13:42Sorry, Daniel.
13:43I was talking over you
13:44or he was talking over you.
13:45Go ahead.
13:45What'd you say about Dabo?
13:47No,
13:47just saying,
13:48unfortunately we missed Dabo,
13:49but hopefully we get to see Dion,
13:51you know,
13:52in the next month or so.
13:54Can I ask you something as a media member?
13:56Go ahead.
13:58Does it,
13:59do you check your mentions?
14:03I turned off my notifications
14:04a couple of years back,
14:06but you know,
14:07I peep at them every now and then for sure.
14:10Because does it,
14:12does it upset you
14:13or does it annoy you
14:15that it basically doesn't matter
14:17what you say about your Sanders,
14:19you're going to get somebody coming in
14:20and cussing you out
14:21at some point of the day?
14:24Yeah,
14:25it's definitely been an adjustment.
14:26You know,
14:26I think it just,
14:27it comes with,
14:28it comes with the job
14:29and I'll tell you,
14:30I mean,
14:30there's a lot worse job you could have
14:33than being an NFL reporter.
14:35So,
14:36you know,
14:36you've got to kind of,
14:37you know,
14:37look at the big picture
14:38at the end of the day.
14:38Because I sat there for 40 minutes
14:40arguing that,
14:41yes,
14:42Deion Sanders should have every right
14:43as a college football coach
14:45to talk to the head coach
14:46of the Cleveland Browns
14:47about a quarterback
14:47that he coached
14:48that happens to be his son.
14:49And before the segment,
14:51I opened up a message
14:52calling me a goofy ass
14:53and being disrespectful
14:54to Deion Sanders
14:55some way,
14:55somehow,
14:56over what I had to say.
14:57So,
14:58yeah,
14:58it can be a little bit concerning,
15:00I guess.
15:00I just wanted to know from you,
15:02Daniel.
15:03Now,
15:03can I close the interview with him?
15:04I'm sure Daniel has other things
15:05he has to do now.
15:06I enjoyed this,
15:07Daniel.
15:07Thank you very much for the time,
15:08Daniel.
15:09All the best to you and yours.
15:11Appreciate it.
15:12Y'all take care.
15:13Daniel Yafusi,
15:15ESPN,
15:15on the Wise Heart Right,
15:16we make it right,
15:17call Kyle,
15:17right online.
15:18Yeah.
15:18He says we are totally overreacting
15:20to the Shador
15:22getting some more reps
15:24and us thinking,
15:25hey,
15:26is there,
15:26is there something changing here?
15:28It just happens to be the day
15:30after the Miles Care trade.
15:31All of a sudden,
15:32Shador is getting more reps.
15:33Daniel says,
15:34you guys are overreacting.
