00:00Full faith and confidence in Carson Swessinger, I think, for a lot of fans, right?
00:04Oh, yeah.
00:04Keith Britton noticed something here.
00:05I'm going to put it right on him, but I kind of wondered if he had a point.
00:09Carson Swessinger was asked about the Miles Garrett trade yesterday.
00:13This was Carson Swessinger's answer.
00:15I mean, you're obviously, you know nothing about it,
00:19and so you have a little bit of surprise, but, you know, when you find it out,
00:23especially with the player, with Jared coming in, I think we're getting a great player.
00:26And, you know, at the end of the day, we go ahead and focus on the 11
00:30that we're putting out on defense, and so I'm looking forward to being able to get to work with him
00:35and get him in this defense and get rolling.
00:38That's Carson Swessinger on it.
00:40Alex Wright was asked about it yesterday.
00:43Here's Alex Wright and his first reaction on things.
00:46I mean, I was shocked just like everybody else.
00:49Didn't want to believe it.
00:50Family calling me, players calling me, friends calling me, you know,
00:53still trying to process it today.
00:55But also, I just don't run from the feeling that, you know, 9-5 is gone.
00:59But at the same time, it's kind of like, you know, it kind of got a little personal with me,
01:03especially being in the football business because, you know, I grew up here.
01:07I grew up with him, like just going into my fifth year with him.
01:10So I just pretty much used him as a sponge, really.
01:12So, but, you know, as soon as the days go by and coming out here and just working
01:16and just realizing he's not going to be here, you know, somebody got to take control.
01:19Like somebody has to take charge.
01:20We're still going to work and be a top defense.
01:22At the end, it's bittersweet.
01:25It's sad.
01:26It's messed up.
01:26But at the same time, we got to keep rolling.
01:29That's Alex Wright.
01:30Did you notice?
01:33Keith noticed that.
01:34And I want to know if you think of the same figure as he being a little nitpicky here.
01:38Because I went, oh, that is interesting.
01:39Did you see any on, like, were there any social media messages?
01:43Are you asking, was there an outpouring of support with Miles getting traded,
01:48the biggest deal in the NFL?
01:50No, there's two explanations to this.
01:52I did not really see that, no.
01:53There is one valid explanation, and then there's the other part of it,
01:56which I kind of want to get into, is the first part is that, oh, Carson Swestinger went on.
02:03Okay, here we go.
02:04Here's the one clip about Carson Swestinger I wanted to get to,
02:07and I didn't know if John had it.
02:08Go ahead.
02:08Just to go back to the trade for a second on Monday, like, how did you find out?
02:13Where were you?
02:14That sort of thing.
02:15We were at the golf outing, I think, when everyone found out.
02:18So, I mean, obviously it's news to break, but I was excited to golf,
02:22so I was kind of trying to figure out how to fix my slice the whole time.
02:27That was at the forefront of my mind.
02:28Think about that for just one moment, but is there one part of it where you are getting a player
02:33back
02:33so you don't want to sit there and go, oh, my God, woe is us.
02:36You are getting a very good player back.
02:38The other thing is, Keith wondered, are they that broken up over it?
02:41Doesn't sound like it to me.
02:44Well, the two defensive players that we talked to yesterday, Alex Wright, Carson Swestinger,
02:50were both asked if they sent a text, and they both said, oh, no, not yet.
02:54We figure he's probably busy right now getting a ton of texts.
02:58I know Dodgers fans in L.A. hate this show and hate you and I, Owen.
03:02I don't think they care about you very much right now.
03:04But let me, I imagine a lot of Dodgers fans are also Rams fans.
03:07Will they see clips of this?
03:11Or better.
03:12And say that we are just coping with this?
03:14Because I didn't see a big outpouring of, oh, my gosh.
03:19Like, I didn't.
03:19Yeah, well, no.
03:20I think Keith kind of had a point there.
03:22They don't need a leader over there.
03:24Especially if Aaron Donald comes back.
03:26Like, they don't need Miles to be something that we needed him to be on a losing team.
03:31They're just, they're just like, come in and go get quarterback.
03:34I know that our fans would always tell me persistently, Anthony, shut up about all this leadership stuff and all
03:41this culture stuff and all this OTA stuff.
03:43I would.
03:43I would want to look the other way.
03:44It's go get quarterback.
03:46And I'm like, yeah, we know he can do that.
03:48Our other guys might need something more.
03:50And now, I think with him out, and you saw Verse coming in, and Quincy Williams, another guy who is
03:56coming in, who is a vocal guy.
03:59Now you have some young and some old with Carson Swessinger, kind of the face of the defense.
04:05Like, I do think you have the dynamics of a real culture.
04:09That doesn't mean they're going to be a better defense.
04:11Like, don't get me wrong.
04:12I'm not saying that.
04:13But there are certain elements to anybody who's been involved in a team in any capacity, if you have 22
04:20guys who it's just see quarterback, get quarterback, see ball, catch ball, like that team is going to come up
04:27short in a lot of ways.
04:29You need more than that.
04:30You need resiliency.
04:31You need something that bleeds over.
04:34Culture is something we all talk about as an amorphous concept, but you know it when you don't see it.
04:40And, guys, that defense might have been special.
04:43They might have had their choreographed dances.
04:45And they might have had their job made easier because Myles Garrett was so great.
04:50But they didn't necessarily ever feel like a team.
04:54They just didn't.
04:55The Alex Wright clips that we've played on the station since, they stick out to me.
04:59Because he's, boy, he will admit, he's done a lot of growing up here over the last few years.
05:03And he has become such an interesting person.
05:06And to hear him talk about him, where I know he cares about Myles Garrett.
05:09And I know that he respects Myles.
05:12But to hear it, like, he's part of the future.
05:15Carson Swessinger is part of the future.
05:16And I just, I didn't even notice.
05:18And Keith noticed.
05:19And it made me kind of wonder, like, is it a little bit of a relief that maybe it's a
05:23little bit more streamlined now?
05:24That you can kind of, you can't replace that type of production.
05:27You can't replace iconic play like that.
05:31So we're not even going to try to talk about that.
05:33But when it comes to setting the tone for a culture, I wonder if it's a little bit of relief.
05:38You don't have to answer questions about who's here, who's not, what's going on, what's not.
05:42These type of things.
05:43It helps streamline part of the process.
05:46I think Shador has come on so strong in the last few weeks that it's making them think, hmm, maybe
05:52we should see what he can do in training camp before we decide that perhaps Deshaun Watson might be QB1
06:01on the death chart.
06:02I think he's just worked so hard and done such a nice job and maybe even surprised him in some
06:08ways that I think they're kind of backing off that a bit.
06:11Mary Kay Cabot saying, don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
06:21Hold your horses, cool your jets on the Deshaun Watson starting conversation.
06:28I love it.
06:29I love it.
06:31Well, the fact that.
06:31I absolutely love it.
06:32Well, listen, you did want to hear from somebody.
06:35Now that's just Mary Kay and, you know, we'll talk to everybody.
06:38And in the end, ultimately, the only thing that matters apparently is Todd Munkin or his superiors.
06:43And obviously, that's a question we'll have after the fact.
06:46But you do want to hear that somebody is gaining some kind of momentum.
06:51Now, we had basically heard, let's put the cards on the table.
06:54We've heard that neither have looked good, but Watson has looked better.
06:59Well, yeah, kind of, yeah.
07:00Up until yesterday was the first day that anybody said that across the board, Shador was better.
07:07Now, Mary Kay did add in, neither were that good yesterday.
07:10So, we did have the good pass to Bond that everybody talked about.
07:14We saw the interception in seven-on-sevens that, you know, Watson threw.
07:20But, in the end, you want to hear that somebody is making some waves.
07:23And Mary Kay said, hey, looks like Shador over the last week and a half has made up some ground.
07:28You dumped a little cold water on what I was going to do.
07:31Still got to do it, though.
07:32Which is?
07:33Coach Lance texted me.
07:35Today is his last day ever as a teacher.
07:38A little bit of senioritis over there.
07:40Congratulations, Coach Lance.
07:41Foot out the door.
07:41Yeah.
07:42The old foot out the door day.
07:43Foot out the homeroom.
07:45You ready to hear this?
07:46Yeah.
07:46Oh, yeah.
07:47I asked him if I could read it on there.
07:48He said, yep.
07:49From Coach Lance.
07:51For me, yesterday was his best day.
07:54He's talking about Shador Sanders.
07:56Oh, good.
07:57Here we go.
07:57For me, yesterday was his best day.
07:59His footwork is improving, and he made some impactful plays down the field.
08:03I want him to earn the spot, not be given.
08:06I thought Watson has been better through the spring until yesterday.
08:15Yeah.
08:16That's kind of what we had seen and what we had heard.
08:21I'm hoping.
08:22From those that have been there.
08:24I'm hoping.
08:25I mean, that's what you want, isn't it?
08:27I think so.
08:28I know there's going to be a lot of fuddy-duddies out there who've been spending too much time
08:32on social media with the Shadorians, and they're going to roll their eyes, and they're
08:37upset.
08:37Hey, may the best QB win.
08:40All right?
08:40I don't hold a grudge towards any quarterback.
08:43May the best QB win.
08:44I want them to go and do good things, all right?
08:49But if they make the playoffs, if they do it with Deshaun Watson, I'll talk about extensions
08:56and things like that.
08:57Fine.
08:58I'm open-minded.
09:00But come on.
09:01You know you want to.
09:02We want to move forward.
09:05You know you want to move forward.
09:07I want to play the music.
09:09I want you to play the damn music right now.
09:11I thought this was a given that it was going to be Shador's job, and I'm hearing great things,
09:15and you are withholding on me, and I'm upset.
09:17I want to be relieved.
09:20Let me do it.
09:21Let me be excited.
09:23You thought it was a given that it would be Watson's job.
09:24Oh, did I say Shador?
09:25I'm sorry.
09:26I thought it was a given that it was Deshaun Watson's job.
09:28I'm sorry.
09:28I'm just so excited.
09:29I'm talking about Shador possibly getting the job now, so I hate to say it.
09:34Like, guys, I understand.
09:35Your starting quarterback for the future is, I'm about 90% sure, playing college football this year.
09:44Or, just because it's a whole other ball of wax, or was in a courtroom over the week.
09:51One of the two.
09:53All right?
09:55But, come on.
09:57Give me something that I can try to get excited about for the future.
10:00Come on.
10:00Give me something.
10:01That is all the other guy does right now.
10:03He reminds me of bad times.
10:05Of course.
10:05He reminds me of why you traded Miles Garrett.
10:07It reminds me why Joel Batonio is going to be left with just a couple of playoff appearances and that's
10:14it.
10:14It reminds me about all the people doing their victory laps who were Baker bros, quote-unquote, saying that that's
10:20what that reminds me of.
10:21I don't want to be reminded of that.
10:22I want to move forward with this football team as best I possibly can.
10:27If we're not going to be that great this year, make it mean something.
10:31Last year, it was make it forgettable.
10:32This year, make it worth my while.
10:35Worth the Browns fans' while.
10:37Well, if he goes out there and he sucks up the room, fine.
10:41Fine.
10:42And I agree with Coach Lance.
10:43I want him to earn it.
10:44I want him to earn it.
10:45All right?
10:46I don't just want it to be handed to him.
10:48I said, the best QB, so be it.
10:51So be it.
10:52And I won't sit here and be all frowny-faced and sad bastard because Deshaun Watson wins the quarterback competition.
11:00All right?
11:00I won't do that.
11:02But, damn, I want someone to look forward to because I just don't think it's going to work out well
11:06with Deshaun Watson.
11:08And I want somebody who, I don't know if he gets me excited, just something that gives me a chance
11:14to look forward to something.
11:15Well, if you heard Todd Munkin.
11:17That's what I want.
11:17If you heard Todd Munkin, like, and we're not anticipating this, but in a week, when, you know,
11:34being quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, like, that'll get people excited.
11:37Then you'll get your music.
11:38Then you'll get the music, I think, for sure.
11:40Give me the music.
11:41This is a start, right?
11:43You know, Michael.
11:44No, forget it.
11:44He was better for one day, and you want the music already?
11:47Let's not put the...
11:48We've played it for less than you know that.
11:50Yeah, and look where we are today.
11:52Oh, so now we don't want to have a standard?
11:55Oh, since Miles has traded, we're trying to have standards of culture in the locker room.
11:58Now we have to have a standard of culture?
12:01Okay, fine.
12:01I just think good for him, and, you know, we've got to focus on ourselves and get ready for this
12:06season.
12:06This is where I'm at in the quarterback race, guys.
12:09It's not that I think Shador is overwhelmingly better.
12:13I just want him to win the job.
12:15I'm not going to have a fight with you and go, Shador's better for this, that, and the other reasons.
12:19There's a lot of football reasons where if I were the head coach, I'd go,
12:23yeah, you know, the veteran's going to have a better grip on the offense.
12:25He's been a top 15 pick before, first rounder before.
12:30I don't care about the money.
12:32The money's the money.
12:32It don't matter to me.
12:33I want the best guy to win.
12:34But there's plenty of reasons why Deshaun Watson would be the leader.
12:38But you know who I want, and I just think it would be much more interesting.
12:41If we don't think we're going to go very far this year,
12:45then I want somebody who I can have a fighting chance with for the future.
12:50Because once the other guy's done, he's done.
12:52Again, if you're winning six games with Deshaun Watson, bye-bye.
12:57If you're winning eight, nine, ten games with Deshaun Watson, we'll talk about it.
13:01If you're winning eight, nine, ten games about Shador, I don't know if there's anything to talk about.
13:06Maybe eight or nine probably ain't there with either quarterback.
13:08But if you're winning nine, if you're winning like...
13:10I don't know.
13:10Well, you can make the wild card with nine wins.
13:13If you're a playoff team or borderline playoff team, I guess we'll have a conversation about either or,
13:17but certainly with Shador.
13:19So that's where I'm at.
13:21I just want to have somebody I want to be excited about, you know?
13:25Yeah, just needs to...
13:26We always say stack wins.
13:28He needs to stack days.
13:29That's where I'm at, man.
13:30That's where I'm at.
