00:00We welcome in the ever-so-dangerous one.
00:03The ever-so-dangerous one, Daryl Ryder, brought to you by...
00:05Jive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:08Hi, Daryl.
00:09Hello, boys.
00:10Oh, you looked wonderful last night.
00:12Resplendent, if I will.
00:13Were the Browns' picks resplendent?
00:16Did you like them, or were you, oh, God, here we go.
00:19What were you thinking?
00:21Well, it did what I thought they were going to do,
00:23did what I thought they should do, and also filled needs.
00:27I really was expecting a left turn last night,
00:31and Andrew Barry to do something to surprise us all,
00:33and that did not happen.
00:36So Spencer Finneau, first lineman off the board.
00:40They got to trade down a couple of spots to do it.
00:44They picked up another third-round pick, another fifth-round pick.
00:49They now have six in the top 150.
00:55So, and Andrew Barry said he wanted this to be a volume draft as well.
00:59So I thought pretty good evening for Barry and the Browns.
01:04All right, so, Daryl, take us through.
01:07Obviously, we debated forever leading up to this draft
01:11whether we would go wide receiver with our number six overall pick
01:16or whether we would go offensive line.
01:18In the end, like, Ken had thrown out, hey, Carnell Tate at number six
01:23and maybe Blake Miller, if we're fortunate enough,
01:25which now, looking back, he would have never made it,
01:27all the way down to 24.
01:29But this scenario, this, you know, alternate universe
01:33that we ended up living in and becoming our reality,
01:36how confident are you that this was the way to go?
01:39Well, I mean, you know, we'll see if the players work out.
01:44And you look at the selections, it's certainly hard to argue against
01:49the players that got picked.
01:52But, you know, obviously there will be pressure there
01:56when it comes to the success of these guys
02:00because, you know, Fano was the first lineman taken.
02:03You had Boston and Cooper still on the board.
02:09And so, you know, Andrew Berry got the players he wanted,
02:14but, you know, those players are going to have to produce.
02:17And so there's a little pressure there.
02:19But again, I think Andrew did exactly what he needed to do.
02:24Darryl Ryder joining us here on the show.
02:26Darryl, I'm kind of getting ripped because I like their character
02:30and I'm getting some eye rolls.
02:32Like, I think Spencer Fano is a high-character guy.
02:35I think Casey Concepcion is a really high-character guy.
02:38I think, and the reason I care so much is because this draft
02:41is kind of seen as weak compared to a lot of other drafts.
02:44Like, if there was a guy that might have been,
02:46well, he's a me player, but he's just undeniable.
02:48It's like, okay, let's have this conversation.
02:50I'm not trying to be Kevin Costner in draft day,
02:52but I think it matters when the draft isn't that great.
02:54Like, we're still at the bottom.
02:56We still have to put talent on the field, obviously.
02:59But I need guys who are willing to work
03:01and not going to just sit there and go,
03:02well, I got drafted by the Browns, woe is me.
03:04And I'm getting bothered by the comparisons
03:06to Corey Coleman, who was a woe is me guy,
03:08and Jed Wills, who was absolutely a woe is me guy.
03:11To the point where I had to actually apologize to you
03:13if you remember about his work ethic years ago.
03:16You remember that.
03:17Yeah.
03:18No, I agree with you.
03:20I think that, you know, listening to both of those guys
03:26last night on their conference calls
03:27and then with you on the radio network,
03:31I mean, there's a lot to like about both players.
03:33And, you know, Todd Munkin has talked about this.
03:38It's something that I've actually criticized the Browns for
03:40over the years and not bringing in guys with high character
03:46that love the game, that want to play the game.
03:49I felt like Andrew Barry has fallen woefully short
03:52in, you know, identifying that particular trait.
03:56You know, we would joke about the analytics thing all the time.
04:00And I would say the one thing that analytics does not do for you
04:04or cannot do for you is really zero in on the human element part of this.
04:11And the human element absolutely matters.
04:14And it's been one of the things that's frustrated me sometimes
04:17about Andrew Barry's time as the top football executive
04:22is he's not gotten the human element of this thing right.
04:26And it just, long way to go here.
04:29But just everything you hear about both of these guys
04:31and the first impression they make,
04:34it feels like Andrew Barry got that part right last night.
04:38Darrell Ryder with us right now, breaking down what we saw.
04:41So they could have taken Caleb Downs.
04:44And many people have said, many of the pundits have said,
04:46that he was the best player in this draft.
04:48And that wasn't a new thing.
04:49That wasn't like a late riser thing.
04:51That had been something we had been hearing, you know,
04:53basically since day one of the college football season.
04:56And you trade down, you get more value, and he is right there.
05:01You can take Caleb Downs, arguably the best player in the draft,
05:04and they didn't.
05:05Does that bother you at all?
05:07A little bit because I can't be hypocritical.
05:11I did say that if Caleb Downs was there, I would turn the card in.
05:15And obviously the Browns did not.
05:20But it's also hard to argue against what Andrew Barry did last night.
05:25I think what he did was very intelligent.
05:28Again, filled two needs.
05:30And it was a chalk draft.
05:32This was a very rare Browns draft where everything went exactly how I think a lot of us expected to.
05:40They traded down.
05:41They took the most versatile offensive lineman, even though Andrew Barry said late last night,
05:48you know, he's going to be the left tackle.
05:50That's where they're going to put him.
05:51But they did take the most versatile offensive lineman available in the draft in Finnell.
05:57And then Casey Concepcion, they feel that he is an explosive playmaker with the ball in his hands.
06:05And they're not all, you know, folks are pointing to the, I think it was a 10% drop metric
06:12or whatever at Texas A&M.
06:13And, you know, Andrew Barry said, hey, I think everyone except for Larry Fitzgerald has drops as a wide receiver.
06:18And that's not something that they're worried about.
06:21Steve Smith actually put out a video on X.
06:23I reposted it because I thought it was really good.
06:25Talking about the drops with Concepcion and whatnot.
06:29So, again, I thought last night was a very good night for Andrew Barry.
06:36Yeah, would I have taken Caleb Downs?
06:38Sure.
06:39But, you know, Barry did do what everyone expected him to do, and that is offensive line, wide receiver.
06:47And he was right in picking offensive line first because we did have that run on those linemen.
06:55He would not have gotten one of the top linemen at 24.
06:59And I think you're right about that.
07:00Darrell Ryder joining us here on the show.
07:05Caleb Downs, anything like that.
07:07I said, you know, you can take best overall.
07:09But I, and people, we said this right after the season.
07:14The reason Kevin got let go, they just thought that the offense was that terrible.
07:18And if they average another touchdown per game, which is, I know, trying to draw blood from a stone sometimes
07:24with this team.
07:25But if they can, that they could have, they could very well, they believe they could very well be a
07:28playoff team this year.
07:30Or a field goal.
07:31Yeah.
07:32In some cases, yeah.
07:33Yeah, if you could get to 20, a 20 point per game average, which, by the way, is something that
07:38this team has only done eight times in 27 seasons.
07:42Like, think about that.
07:43That pigeon, and I know that pigeon holds you offensively there, but that's why we were thinking offense the entire
07:49time here.
07:50Yeah, and so now, here's the beauty of where the Browns are at, okay, going into tonight and the rest
07:56of this weekend, okay, Andrew Barry now is in the catbird seat.
08:01He can go best player available in the draft, okay, at 39, 70, 74.
08:08And if that happens to be a defensive player, fine.
08:12As Coach Riz likes to say, stacking talent, that's what Barry can do the rest of the weekend.
08:17He filled the two holes he absolutely had to fill.
08:21Now, hopefully they do draft another wide receiver here tonight.
08:26But, you know, you can add some corner depth, some safety depth, maybe another linebacker, some more defensive line help.
08:34Like, if you want to take a defensive player or two tonight, that's perfectly fine.
08:39But they still have that need offensively for another wide receiver.
08:44I think they still need to draft a tight end as well this weekend.
08:49And, you know, Andrew Barry said something very interesting last night.
08:53He wants this to be a volume draft when it comes to talent.
08:57In other words, he wants, there's a high likelihood that he's going to come away with this thing with 8
09:03to 10 players.
09:04So, that is something that he's got his eyes on as well.
09:08He wants a very large rookie draft class.
09:12Now, Derek, there's one issue I had with Concepcion is that, and I knew you had him later, so it
09:18wasn't like you were picking him at the top of the draft.
09:20But, had you have taken Tate, you know, he projects as a number one for a football team.
09:26Maybe not an elite player in the league, but a number one for a team.
09:29I do not think Concepcion fits that bill.
09:32And, given that, with Jerry Judy, who's undersized, has his issues, Concepcion undersized, even though he can be used in
09:40a lot of different ways, including special teams.
09:41How are the Browns going to address getting a number one wide receiver on this football team?
09:47Is it one of those where they'll still be open for a big trade, or are they punting this to
09:51next season?
09:52I think there's a chance you punt this to next season, because until you have the quarterback, in my view,
10:00you really need to get that solved.
10:05Because if you have a number one wide receiver, but then you're paying a lot of money to, but then
10:09you're not able to get him the football, what are we doing here, right?
10:13Now, the Browns have famously, in recent years, traded for wide receivers, right?
10:17They traded for Jarvis Landry, they traded for Odell Beckham Jr., but Baker Mayfield was here at the time, and
10:22we had thought, at the time, he was the quarterback.
10:25So, those moves made sense.
10:28And, in some respects, especially with the Landry trade, you did get some dividends there.
10:34He had really helped change the culture temporarily for this football team, and that ended up being a pretty good
10:41trade.
10:42Odell was a massive swing there taken by John Dorsey.
10:47It made a lot of headlines, everyone got excited about the one-handed catches in practice and whatnot, but overall,
10:53that is a trade that, frankly, did not work out.
10:56Then, Andrew Berry, he trades for Amari Cooper.
10:58You get 2,000-yard seasons out of him, gave up a fifth-rounder, ended up trading him for a
11:04third-rounder.
11:05That was a very successful set of moves there by Andrew Berry.
11:09Jerry Judy, mixed results.
11:10You got one good year out of him, a 1,000-yard receiving season.
11:14Last year, it was a cluster mess.
11:17It was very disappointing.
11:18We got the pouty, unreliable Jerry Judy that we saw with the Denver Broncos and why Denver wanted to get
11:26rid of him.
11:27So, hopefully, he bounces back this year.
11:30Todd Munkin's confident that he will be able to do that.
11:33So, yeah, to your point, Anthony, about do they address this with a trade, I think that there's a very
11:38real possibility they try and do that.
11:41I just don't think it's this offseason because it's too soon.
11:44Do you think they take a quarterback tomorrow?
11:45Not tonight, but tomorrow.
11:47Yeah, I do.
11:48Who do you think they're going to take?
11:49Who do you like?
11:49Well, I don't like any of them, but I do think there's a possibility Drew Aller could absolutely be on
11:58their radar.
12:01Wow.
12:03Daryl, what would that mean for Dylan Gabriel?
12:06What would that mean for Shador Sanders?
12:09Well, I don't think it would alter the quarterback competition for Shador Sanders and Deshaun Watson, but I do think
12:16that that would push Dylan Gabriel closer to the door.
12:21I don't know if he's going to.
12:22You think he's going to be around tomorrow?
12:24Yeah, I don't know, Ken.
12:25I really don't.
12:26And that's the thing with this quarterback class, right?
12:30It's not thought of very highly in league circles, and it's really hard to project where some of these guys
12:38are going to go.
12:39I was stunned that Ty Simpson went to the Rams last night, and I don't know if people saw the
12:45clips of McVay sitting next to his...
12:51Like, McVay did look like he did not like that pick at all.
12:56That was actually pretty entertaining to watch.
12:58The disgust and disdain in his voice and on his face was pretty hard to miss there.
13:05But, yeah, this is just a very hard quarterback class to project, and I think that's why aiming for next
13:12year to try and find that franchise quarterback in the first round,
13:17it's why a lot of teams are trying to hang on to those first-round picks next year so that
13:23they can do what the Browns probably want to do.
13:25All right, L Dangerous One, we thank you very much for the time.
13:27We'll talk to you again on Monday.
13:30All right, guys.
13:31The Dangerous One, Darryl Ryder, brought to you by...
13:33Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
13:36Zagura, 901.
13:37What were you going to say?
13:38People are getting irritated making the mention about the wide receiver.
13:42I like him, but I just don't think he's a number one.
13:45Why are they irritated?
13:46Well, because people think you take a first-round wide receiver.
13:51He's a number one wide receiver.
13:52It was a back-end first round.
13:53I mean, you took him at 24.
13:55They took T. Higgins at number 33 that year with the Cincinnati Bengals.
14:00I mean, they could have drafted back up and traded back up in the first round if they really wanted
14:04to.
14:04I mean, it was number two.
14:05Now, T. Higgins is top-end number two, could be a number one.
14:08I thought Jordan Tyson.
14:09I thought Lemon.
14:11They projected to be a number one wide receiver for a team.
14:13So they're saying we shouldn't have taken Concepcion?
14:14No, I mean, I think part of it is...
14:16Or they're saying you're disrespecting Concepcion?
14:18They think I'm disrespecting him.
14:19I said I think he has a chance to be a good player.
14:21I just don't think he projects to be a number one wide receiver.
14:25And I think they're still going to be looking for that,
14:27whether it's either going to be in the trade market or next season.
14:30They got their punt return.
14:33Which people don't want to hear that.
14:34Yeah, but you don't just take a punt return in the first round.
14:36People do not want to hear that.
14:37He's being...
14:38You're being difficult.
14:39Hey, if Andrew wouldn't have brought it up three or four times last night,
14:41I wouldn't have brought it up three or four times last night.
14:42And he said that because he...
14:43And Larry Fitzgerald had the drop sees too.
14:45Because he knew what we were going to say.
14:47He knew what everybody was going to say.
14:49And so he had to sell them.
14:50Of course he had to sell them a little bit better.
14:53I want to jump back into that when we come back.
14:54Nathan Zagura has to join us at 9 o'clock.
14:58Zagura's going to join us at 9.
15:00We're on 89 minutes of sleep now, baby.
15:02Coming in hot.
15:039.45.
15:04Tone's on just as little sleep as me.
15:06We used to be able to hang out in bathrooms downtown to be able to carry us through.
15:10But now we have kids.
15:11We're not able to do that anymore.
15:12We're not able to do that anymore.
15:12We're not able to do that anymore.
