00:00Our man, Daryl Ryder, brought to us by Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store,
00:04was sitting right there taking part, listening to every pearl of wisdom spoken by Andrew Barry
00:09today. Hello, Daryl. There were pearls of wisdom? I kid, I kid, I'm so sorry, that was a low blow,
00:16even for me. Ouch. So the one thing I kept going back to, because he kept saying it,
00:23where we're picking, you want a quality starter or a difference maker? Public discourse
00:29is you draft for need, but we have a longer term investment here for the team. Difference
00:36maker, elite talent, you want to select a unique player. Was he setting everybody up for best
00:42player available, or was he just saying things, Daryl? No, I mean, he's said or made similar
00:49comments in the past, so he's been pretty consistent in his messaging. So no, I don't
00:58think he was just saying things. It's just, we have to, I guess, try and figure out who
01:03that best player is going to be. And, you know, as he pointed out, you know, I don't think
01:11that anyone would have thought they would have taken a three technique in Mason Graham,
01:17linebacker and Carson Swessinger, you know, with two of their first three picks in that
01:23draft. But here we are, that's what they did. So we're all assuming that they're going to
01:30do one thing or another, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's ultimately what he
01:35is going to do. This time last year, we assumed they were drafting Travis Hunter after that press
01:41conference because of just how much he gushed with praise, right? He's the Shohei Otani of
01:47football and all those things, right? And here he already had the deal with the Jacksonville
01:51Jaguars in his back pocket, ready to go. So I think he does a good job of keeping everyone
01:57off balance and keeping it as unpredictable as possible, which frankly is his job. He doesn't
02:04want to tip his hand right now as far as what he wants to do. So they could go a
02:11number of
02:12directions and it would not shock me if they did something unexpected.
02:17Darryl, what do you, Darryl Ryder, want them to do next week at six? And did your mind change
02:26based on today's press conference?
02:29Well, I think they're totally trading down. I know Andrew Barry had some fun with that today. You
02:33were all assuming a trade down, but there's a reason we're all assuming a trade down here.
02:38I think that that is going to come. I do think it's important for them to get one of these
02:43top
02:43tackles in this draft class. There's a gap between the top three or four guys and then the rest of
02:49the class. Whereas with the receiver group, there isn't a massive gap there. So assuming a trade down,
02:58go tackle first and then go ahead and draft your wide receiver at 24. But as Andrew said, these are
03:08long-term investments. They are looking for best possible player that's available. They're not
03:13looking by need, which would then narrow the scope, would narrow their focus. And obviously when you do
03:19that, you set yourself up for some potential problems down the road with guys not working out.
03:25So for me, I do think it's important that they come away with their fifth offensive lineman as well
03:33as another receiver to add to a receiving room that quite frankly, I just don't think that there's a
03:40lot of talent there. Andrew would disagree with that. I think he feels that that room just needs
03:46developed better than it's been. Do you feel that there's any offensive lineman that,
03:56that's the best way to put this, if they trade down, there's an offensive lineman that they can
04:01pick up that you think will be good enough along with the compensation to make up for passing up one
04:08of the top six guys in this draft, even though, and most of the top six guys by most accounts
04:14are
04:15defensive players. Yeah. Well, I look, I don't, I, if Caleb Downs is there at six, they need to,
04:21they need to pounce on that. Okay. Um, if Carnell Tate is there, uh, I, I would like them to
04:28make
04:28that pick as well. If Jeremiah Love is there at six, I wouldn't mind that one either. I think if
04:35all
04:35three of those players are there, they're totally trading the pick. Uh, and then of course you then
04:41allow, uh, whoever is moving up and, and whatever teams end up in front of you there, uh, after the
04:46move down to dictate what you're ultimately going to do. But, but as far as, you know, the offensive
04:52lineman that you're, you're talking about, you got, uh, Francis Maunoa, uh, from Miami. Uh, I like him a lot.
04:59You've heard a lot about, uh, Proctor from Alabama, uh, being on the Browns radar. Um, and I would have
05:06to think that he'd be there. Uh, uh, Monroe Freeling, uh, the tackle from Georgia. We've heard a lot of
05:13and had a lot of conversation about him. So I think from that standpoint, Jeff, any of those three guys
05:20that I just mentioned, uh, it'd be really hard for me to sit here and, and say, Andrew Barry's totally
05:26blowing it. If he ends up with one of those three guys and something that he reiterated much to my
05:32chagrin, cause I don't believe in it, but he does. And I, I will credit him with his consistency. He
05:37does believe a tackle is a tackle and you can play both sides, uh, right and left. So, and vice
05:43versa.
05:44So, uh, that that's what they believe. So, uh, it hasn't worked yet, but I don't know first for
05:50everything, maybe it'll work this time, but, uh, they, they do believe that. So I think any of those
05:55three guys, Jeff, uh, it, it'd really be hard to say Andrew Barry doesn't know what he's doing.
06:00Uh, Daryl, Jeremiah love was a lot. There was a lot of talk about him. The running back from
06:05Notre Dame is that was the talk aimed or was the answer aimed at the reporters, our fans,
06:12or maybe perhaps Washington who, if they believe we could be taking him at six might be willing to
06:19wheel and deal to get back up to, to get up to six from seven. Who do you think that
06:22message is for?
06:23Yeah. I, I, I, I think Andrew Barry definitely likes the player. Um, he did invest two picks in
06:32the running back room last year, uh, one of them, a second round pick in Quinshawn Judkins. So,
06:38um, uh, but I, I view him as a two for one player. I feel like not only you're getting
06:44a running back,
06:44but you're getting a wide receiver as well. Okay. And he is a blue chip talent, which this offense is
06:51devoid of. So, um, you know, I, I don't know that Andrew Barry was trying to send any specific
06:57message. I think last year he was looking back on last year's press conference, right? And
07:01everything he had said in that press conference about Travis Hunter, there was a message being
07:06sent there. And the message was Jacksonville, you made a good trade. You're going to get a very good
07:10player. They're totally worth it, uh, for you to give, give us what you're going to give us.
07:15I think that, that, you know, hindsight being 2020, looking back on that, that was a message
07:20delivered by Andrew Barry. I don't feel like that there was necessarily a, uh, a direct message
07:26to anybody else, uh, behind them, uh, given by Andrew Barry today. Um, you know, I'm going back,
07:34I'm cutting, uh, you know, some, some video bites from this thing and just listening to it again. Yeah.
07:40I don't think that he was delivering a message today other than maybe mocking us in the media,
07:45a little bit because of some of the assumptions that, that, that we tend to make, uh, this time
07:50of year, whether it's the quality of the class, whether it's about them moving up and down the
07:55board, whether it's about, uh, the, the, the available quarterbacks or next year is always
07:59the better year to draft the quarterbacks. Right. Um, so no, I don't, I don't think Andrew was trying
08:05to send a specific message today. Was he giving any hint into anything when he talked about
08:10and limitedly talked about quarterbacks? He talked about Ty Simpson. Uh, we enjoyed our
08:16time with him five star at one point and then was behind, you know, some good talent there,
08:22Bryce young and Milrow. And then Jeff, I just want you to know, I've really enjoyed our time
08:27together. I always have with you over the deck of decades. We've known each other, man. And he
08:32also said Garrett Nussmeyer. Yeah. Clearly hurt and it affected his play. I thought, yeah. Hmm.
08:39Tell him there's anything there. Yeah. And he also said that, uh, he does believe that there is
08:44contrary to the popular belief that this is not a very good quarterback class or there isn't a lot
08:50of talent in this class. Uh, Barry did mention he, he doesn't subscribe to that. He does feel like
08:55there'll be a couple of guys to come out of this class. That'll be able to have an impact, uh,
08:59in the national football league, which obviously remains to be seen. Uh, the, it certainly didn't
09:03rule out the Browns drafting a quarterback. Keep in mind though, before everybody loses their
09:08bananas, uh, they have three quarterbacks on the roster right now. Okay. Uh, the Sean Watson,
09:13Shador Sanders, Dylan Gabriel teams always carry a fourth. So there's a couple of avenues they can
09:19go. Obviously they can draft another project. They can sign an undrafted rookie free agent just to
09:26have somebody throw some footballs this off season. Maybe you catch lightning in a bottle
09:30there, or they could go the veteran route. I think it's more likely than not that they will
09:36either draft a project or they're going to sign an undrafted rookie free agent. Keep in mind too,
09:42they're going to hold a, they're going to hold a rookie mini camp here. Uh, they need somebody to
09:46throw the football during said camp. Actually, they need a couple of guys to throw the ball there.
09:51So, um, yeah, you know, there, I do think that they'll, they'll add a quarterback. I just,
09:56I don't like the idea of drafting someone right now. You already have two projects in,
10:00in Sanders and Gabriel. I don't think you need a third right now. Uh, and especially with, uh,
10:06what we're all projecting for 2027, what we're all believing that the Browns ultimately are aiming
10:12to do in 2027, but Hey, Barry left the door open today. All right, Darrell, let me throw this at
10:19here. Ready? I'm always ready. All right, here we go. The Browns decide they want to take David
10:25Bailey, Arbel Reese, Ruben Bain. What does that mean? And can you read into it a little bit?
10:33All edge rushers? Um, yes, I can. Are you asking me to read into that? I'm asking you to, well,
10:42you are the Browns expert. So that's, I want to see what you, cause Jeff and I had this conversation
10:46before the show. We're like, huh? So what if they took Bailey Reese or, or Bain? Yeah. So I, uh,
10:55I was wanting to get in a miles Garrett question. Uh, something along the lines. I know you said
11:04you're not trading miles Garrett. However, to your point, we assume a lot in the media, uh, fans do
11:10too. Um, Darrell, you know, we wanted you to ask him questions about the quarterback from last year.
11:16Why did you draft two quarterbacks? Why did you? Well, I kind of did when I went, well, I kind
11:23of
11:23did as far as, you know, you know, how they, uh, you know, when they're, uh, you know, projecting out,
11:28uh, future quarterback classes, how does that inform their decision-making process going into a draft?
11:33Cause last year, right. This was supposed to be there to draft a quarterback as part of the reason
11:37I think they made the trade that they did. And then lo and behold, he goes ahead and drafts two
11:41quarterbacks last year. Right. So, so clearly not has, has zero impact whatsoever. Cause we were all
11:47assuming that this was going to be the year to, uh, to, uh, have a top pick to draft one
11:51of these
11:51quarterbacks. And it didn't play out that way. Now we're all hoping it's next year. So, um, I will say
11:56this, I am not 100% convinced and willing to put it in stone that miles Garrett will be a
12:05Cleveland
12:05Brown this season or, or next season, just because of the contract adjustment that they made. If they
12:13happen to select a defensive end, especially if they do that in the first round of the draft,
12:18I think you and I both know what that will do, uh, from a speculation standpoint.
12:23Oh, are you getting, it'll be 24 seven. Yeah. Yeah. It'll be 24 seven. What's what's up with
12:29miles? A hundred percent. Uh, and, uh, if, if Todd Munkin and Andrew Barry get annoyed with our
12:36quarterback questions, just wait until that happens. Uh, it'll be miles Garrett, 24, seven,
12:42three 65 until they ultimately decide to, to, you know, do or do not do something.
12:49Darrell, last thought here. Yeah. If you got overwhelmed or a really good return for miles,
12:58who is good as he is, he's 30, his, he's got more good years behind him than in front of
13:05him.
13:05Right. Why wouldn't you do it? Well, here's a funny thing. Um, I, cause I, I, I've been thinking
13:11about this whole thing. I've been, uh, talking about the last couple of days about doing this
13:16trade with Dallas, right? I think they got the Packers first round pick next year. They don't
13:19have their own. They got the Packers pick, but to get that second first round pick, get it from
13:24Dallas. Right. You don't need, you don't really need, uh, any additional picks in this draft. You're
13:30good. You got five of the top one 10. You got two first rounders. You're in pretty good shape.
13:34You're, you're second rounders at 39. Like you're, you're okay this year, right? It's next year that you
13:40want. And, and I'm just going to just throw a, I'm just going to throw a grenade at your show
13:46right now. What, what if they just traded miles with the sixth overall pick for just a haul of
13:52picks? What, what if they combine the deals instead of splitting them, right? Instead of sliding down
13:57to 12 and just doing that whole thing. What if they just did the whole thing at once? Cause I
14:01do
14:01think that the Cowboys would be, um, uh, I, I do think the Cowboys would be interested in miles.
14:08Garrett. I would think you'd be right about that. Wow. What'd you get back? I mean,
14:13you can't trade more than three first round picks. So, well, you could, you could get, uh,
14:2012 this year. Okay. Maybe, maybe you get 20 from them as if we were doing an all in one,
14:25right? I'd want 12 this year. I'd want the Packers pick next year from them. And I'd want their,
14:29uh, first round pick in, uh, 20, 28 and go ahead and sprinkle in maybe a second round pick
14:34somewhere just cause I said so. So yeah, that's just cause I said so. Okay. Draft day.
14:41I, I, you know what I see. I, I was hoping you'd get the reference Andy. Kudos to you.
14:46I was there. What's up with your show tonight. That's tonight. You get a special. Oh yeah.
14:49We're going to be, uh, yeah, we're going to be on a game on North Olmstead. Come on out and
14:53see us.
14:53It's the, uh, the mock draft. I will be the commission as I always am. Uh, we will, uh,
14:59have our 32 winners, uh, uh, make picks, make some trades, uh, probably have a beverage or two.
15:05And then also to, um, uh, coach Riz, myself and Jake Volnick will be out there with, uh,
15:11another Browns off season special as well. So, uh, lots of fun to be had tonight in North Olmstead.
15:16Looking forward to it.
15:17As commished, do you ever veto trades?
15:20Yes, I have. Yes. I, we, we, we've had a few instances where things have kind of gotten a
15:25little off the rails and I have, uh, you know, had to make sure we keep the train on the
15:29track.
15:29So yes, um, we're not, we're not trading the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders anymore. That just isn't
15:34that that's not going to happen. When we first started this thing, I'd like them throwing into
15:37the miles deal. Yeah. I have no official comment. Are you a stickler for time? Like what if somebody
15:46goes over? Yes. Yes. Then they forfeit their pick or they have to move back? Well, it works
15:52just like the NFL. Uh, the next guy up can get their pick to the podium before you. You just,
15:57yeah, see, yeah, we, we, we are, uh, we're very big on the timing, by the way, this year's draft,
16:02uh, folks, uh, it's eight minutes between picks now, not 10. Uh, the NFL wanting to move this thing
16:08along as well next week. It is eight, uh, minutes between the picks as it should be. Oh yeah. Well,
16:16here's the thing too. The Raiders, as soon as they go on the clock, the card needs to be in.
16:20They don't need eight minutes to sit there and, and make us listen to everyone talk about,
16:24uh, Fernando Mendoza. We've been doing it. We've been doing it for four months.
16:28I know they do. Thanks buddy. You bet guys. Have a good Daryl writer brought to us by
16:33Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
