00:00He covers the Browns for the Chronicle Telegram. All of his work can be read on BrownsZone.com.
00:05Great site for Browns coverage. He's Mr. Scott Petrack. Hello, Scott.
00:09What's going on, fellas?
00:11You tell us. How are you?
00:13I'm good, thanks.
00:14Good.
00:14Where are you playing today? Will you tell us? I don't know if you can.
00:17Do you want to? It's up to you.
00:18He doesn't want a crowd.
00:19Oh, you don't want a gallery?
00:20Seneca.
00:22I'm sorry. You don't want patrons? Sorry.
00:25That's fine. I don't mind.
00:27Seneca.
00:28Doesn't mind patrons.
00:30That's good.
00:31So, in an exercise, just to make my coworkers mad, I put together, and we haven't done it yet, but
00:38it's coming up,
00:39the best draft choices of the Andrew Barry era.
00:42We've gone over the worst.
00:44It's a pamphlet.
00:45There can't be any worse picks, and I guess pick your order, based on what they passed up than Jed
00:53Wills or Anthony Schwartz.
00:55Can there be? I mean, you passed up Tristan Wirfs and Amon Rossin-Brown at the same positions.
01:00Yeah, I think you're right.
01:02You know, Wills is a little complicated because he did start some games, and I thought he was better than
01:06people gave him credit.
01:07I agree with you on that.
01:08Right, but he's still the number 10 pick.
01:11They could have gotten worse.
01:12He doesn't get a second contract.
01:15You know, Schwartz had no impact.
01:18Waste of a third-round pick.
01:21So, you know, the number 10 thing is why Wills is in that discussion.
01:25So, I would listen to both.
01:26I think those guys are both – that's probably one, too.
01:30You know, David Bell wasn't a great pick, but, you know, he got hurt, and he made some plays that
01:37you can remember.
01:38I'll tell you what, though, when you go for the good side, until last year, there was some slim pickings
01:43there, too.
01:44Guess what?
01:45I came up with 12 just to make Andy mad.
01:4812 good ones?
01:49Yeah.
01:50Majority of them to be coming from last year.
01:52We'll send them to you so you can have a laugh later.
01:53Yeah, please.
01:54So, why did he hit last year?
01:56What was the difference last year compared to all the – and it's hard for me not to say Paul
02:00D. Podesta, but –
02:01I mean, and I say that based on not knowing what Paul D. Podesta does, but you have to ask
02:07yourself, why was he successful last year compared to every other year before?
02:11Well, it's a great question, Andy, and I asked him that at the Combine, and I didn't love his answer.
02:17What was it?
02:18His answer was they had better – I'm paraphrasing – but better resources, right?
02:23They had two picks in the first – or a pick in the first round, more at the top of
02:28the second, right, as opposed to those other years where they just traded away those first and second round picks.
02:34So, you're not going to draft as well.
02:36So, there is some credence to that theory, right?
02:41But I don't think it can be only that.
02:44Because it's not like they had a ton of success in the third, fourth, and fifth round.
02:48And it feels like last year they had some success as you went through the draft, too.
02:51So, everybody started last year.
02:54That's the first time he's had that.
02:55Right.
02:56Harold Fannin was a third-round pick.
02:57And they've had third-round picks.
02:58And, like, Martin Emerson, Jr. was a good third-round pick.
03:02He might be the best pick before last season.
03:05But, you know, was he Harold Fannin?
03:08Maybe.
03:09I mean, you know, Baby is a rookie.
03:11They both had the same impact.
03:12And I'm going to try to ask Andrew again on Thursday if he can give me a little more insight.
03:18Because if that's the only reason, then I'm not sure that that's sustainable, right?
03:24But if you said, hey, we had this piece of data or we got this new Scott that we like,
03:29whatever, then you can say you can build on that going forward.
03:32If it's just a matter of having more draft picks or better draft picks, I don't know if that's sustainable
03:38or even if I'm buying that is a reason.
03:41So, Scott Petrack joining us, ChronicleTelegram, BrownZone.com.
03:44The thing that scares me most about the guys that we think are the worst two picks, Schwartz and Wills,
03:51based on where Jed was taken and all that stuff,
03:54is those are the two areas that they went into the offseason thinking we have to get better at wide
03:59receiver and we have to get better on the offensive line.
04:02And those are the two biggest swings and misses, I think, other than maybe a quarterback trade, to quote Jimmy
04:09Haslam, that they've had.
04:11And I find it hard to have confidence in their ability to identify an offensive lineman and especially identify a
04:19wide receiver.
04:20Yeah, I think that's warranted, Jeff.
04:22I really do.
04:23Now, if you're trying to play devil's advocate or be positive, you can counter with they haven't taken a receiver
04:30above the third round.
04:31So, it's not like you're drafting an elite receiver.
04:35It's not like they've drafted an elite receiver and been wrong about it.
04:39And after Wills, I don't think they've drafted an offensive lineman before the third round, right?
04:46Zach Vinter.
04:47And, you know, right now that looks like a miss.
04:49So, they haven't spent premium resources on those two positions in the draft.
04:54But I completely get your point, Jeff.
04:57And I think that is reason to be a little bit concerned because I'm still assuming that those are going
05:02to be the first two positions that they take in this draft.
05:05Scott, you mentioned Zach Zinter.
05:08Here's a guy who's 6'6", 300 pounds.
05:10I mean, he's got the build.
05:12Do you think he's still a possibility here as a guy who can step in and actually be a real
05:17contributor on the offensive line?
05:19Or do you think that's a miss and it's not coming back?
05:21No, I think he's in the mix, right?
05:25Depending on who they add in the draft, depending on where they play Elton Jenkins.
05:29I could see Jenkins, the other Jenkins, Kevin Jenkins, Luke Whibler, and Zach Zinter going for two spots, right?
05:39So, you have Zion Johnson at one guard, you have Titus Howard at right tackle, you have, let's assume they
05:46draft a left tackle.
05:47So, then you've got those four guys for center and right guard.
05:51And Elton Jenkins will take one of those spots.
05:54But could he go to center and you play Zinter at guard?
05:56Like, I still think that's a possibility.
05:58He just hasn't shown enough, right?
06:00He didn't get on the field much at all when he was.
06:03He was not impressive.
06:06You know, I think he works hard.
06:07You know, everybody says he's a good kid.
06:09So, I don't know why he hasn't had the success.
06:12Some guys, it takes longer.
06:14I wouldn't rule him out.
06:15But I certainly think if they thought that he was ready to be a day one starter, then they would
06:21have added one fewer guy.
06:22So, they are not assuming that he's ready to fill in as a starter.
06:26Let me ask you this, because we talked about this at the beginning of the show.
06:29Dan Graziano said that the Browns are more likely to extend Miles Garrett than to trade him.
06:34I'm not 100% buying what Dan said.
06:37I'm just curious what you think.
06:39Yeah, I think you can say that if you believe that they're not going to trade him, right?
06:45So, if you think it's a 2% chance that they trade him, and I'm just throwing a number out
06:49there, then yeah, it would be more likely that he gets some kind of pay bump, right?
06:53So, I don't think Dan is off on that.
06:56But I think there is a small chance that the Browns trade Miles Garrett after June 1st, or between June
07:021st and the season starting, based on how they think the team is, based on if Miles is happy or
07:09not.
07:10You know, if behind the scenes Miles is asking to get out, maybe that changes the organization's approach to this.
07:16But I do believe them when they say they have no plans and don't want to trade him.
07:21Like, I don't think that's changed from last year.
07:23I think that's consistent.
07:24We've talked about it.
07:25I don't think it's the right move to trade Miles, and I know plenty of people disagree with me.
07:29But that's how I feel, and that's how they feel.
07:32So, if the stances are not going to trade him, then yeah, I would say some kind of extension or
07:38pay bump would be more likely to.
07:40If you trade him, it screams rebuild.
07:43But right now, doesn't it look like a rebuild?
07:45They're just not screaming it?
07:49Yeah, I mean, yeah, I completely get what you're saying, right?
07:52There's certainly a roster transformation, right?
07:55They've been scared or not scared at all.
07:58They don't want to use the word rebuild, right?
08:00Yeah, they don't.
08:00So, let's call it a roster transformation.
08:03That went into effect last year.
08:06But they haven't torn down the defense at all, right?
08:10So, if you still think you have a top-five defense and you can improve on offense, it's not outlandish
08:14to think you can go from five to nine wins, right?
08:18They should have won more games last year than they did.
08:20So, if you get better quarterback play, better receiver play, better offensive line play, then why not win nine games?
08:27If you win nine games, then it's fun.
08:29Then you're in the conversation.
08:30Then you don't have to worry about Miles not being happy, right?
08:35So, Jimmy Hasm does not have the appetite for a rebuild.
08:39And I think he's made that clear.
08:41And he said at the owners' meetings, and I completely agree with him, and that's why one of the reasons
08:46I wouldn't trade Miles is when they think they're going to be good, whenever that is, 27, 28, they still
08:52think Miles is going to be, if not the best defense player in the league, still at an elite level.
08:56And I completely agree with that.
08:58So, if you think Miles is going to play that, be that type of player, when you're ready to make
09:03your run, then how do you trade the best defensive player in the history of the franchise and the best
09:08defensive player in the league?
09:10You're not – it would take an unbelievably successful trade for you to be better as a team than you
09:16are when you have Miles Garrett.
09:17I agree with that.
09:19Go ahead.
09:20I'm just going to – where does this put Todd Munkin then as we walk into the season?
09:24Because if Todd walks away with a three-win season and you just talked about an owner that – you
09:30talked about his appetite.
09:32Like, this is a tough place to be.
09:35You're exactly right.
09:36Now, I think Todd Munkin, at 60 years old and the first time being a head coach, he doesn't have
09:40an appetite for a rebuild either.
09:41And he's coming in expecting and expecting to win.
09:44Everybody wants to win.
09:45But he's expecting to win.
09:47He thinks he can improve this offense where it makes a difference in the win-loss column.
09:53So, I think they're on the same page.
09:55But, to your point, Andy, you're 100% right that that puts a lot of pressure on him.
09:59And, you know, if you play these scenarios out, if you don't win more than five games like the owner
10:04thinks you should, then what happens?
10:07You know, do you go get a new coach?
10:08Is there a total blow-up of the front office, right, in the coaching staff?
10:14I mean, that's not outlandish.
10:15We've seen it in this league.
10:15We've seen it with this organization.
10:18We like playing games here on Baskin and Phelps.
10:21Last week, we looked at what is sitting here at quarterback right now and kind of compared it to some
10:28of the others.
10:28And we figure it's about one of the worst five situations at quarterback in the NFL right now.
10:34How does Jimmy Haslam expect them to win more than five games with that quarterback situation?
10:40Unless you just keep your fingers crossed and think, come on, Shadour.
10:44Come on, Deshaun.
10:45Let's go.
10:46You guys can get her done.
10:48It's a great question.
10:49I think if you're Haslam, you go, okay, can the quarterback situation be any worse than it was last year?
10:56And the answer is probably not.
10:57Probably not.
10:58So you won five games that way and felt you should have won a couple more.
11:03If the defense plays as well, if the quarterback plays a little better, if the guys around the quarterback are
11:08better,
11:09maybe you can win with the bottom – maybe you can win enough or win more with a bottom five
11:14quarterback situation.
11:15And now it's really difficult to do that.
11:17But I think you're hoping it's either Shadour or Shadour makes an improvement or Deshaun Watson shows more of the
11:26form that he was before he got here.
11:27Right?
11:28I mean, those are the – that's the optimistic view.
11:30That's the hope.
11:32But if you're talking about how this season goes sideways, it's because you don't get that quarterback play.
11:37And it's really difficult to win with poor quarterback play.
11:40And then you're looking at whatever, three, four, five wins again.
11:42So, it looks like this is at a quarterback, right?
11:45I don't see anything stunning that's coming down the road that – other than Deshaun and Shadour fighting it out.
11:51Would you agree?
11:52I mean, I think they draft somebody.
11:54I don't know if that draft pick is a factor in the starting job, right?
12:00I mean, I think he enters the competition.
12:01And depending if it's – you know, if it's Ty Simpson at 39, then it's interesting.
12:06And I don't – I think that's a possibility.
12:09If it's Drew Eller in the fourth or fifth round, you know, then I don't think he's really in the
12:13mix to be the starter.
12:14So, my guess is it's, you know, Shadour and Deshaun, but I think it's probably premature to say that nobody
12:21gets added to that mix.
12:23But whoever gets added would probably be a long shot.
12:27Hit them straight, my friend.
12:29You're going to try.
12:29Thanks, fellas.
12:30Hot target.
12:30Get a good hot target.
12:32Absolutely.
