00:00Here he is, Scott Petrarch. Hi, Scott. Scott, how are you?
00:02What's up, buddy?
00:03I'm good. How are you guys?
00:04We are good. I don't know. Did you catch the Brendan Soresby news that just hit in the last hour?
00:09Yeah, I was driving, so I listened to you guys talk about it.
00:11Yeah, your thoughts on that?
00:13I'm still grumpy, Scott.
00:14Yeah, I'm scared of him right now.
00:18Yeah, I don't understand the ruling, necessarily.
00:21I think the Browns, and probably most teams, are better off staying away from him.
00:27We heard Todd Munkin last week at the golf outing.
00:30He didn't want anything to do with him, and I don't know if the rest of the organization felt that
00:34way or not,
00:35but I think this probably is good for the kid.
00:39Gives him another year to prove that he's got it figured out and he's not going to be a problem,
00:45but I just feel like right now, if you took him in the supplemental, if he'd been able to come
00:49out,
00:51there's a lot of things that could go wrong there.
00:55Scott, with the knowledge that you have on the Brendan Soresby situation,
00:59is that someone do you think the Browns would have any interest in whatsoever,
01:03or do you think what has come out about gambling with proxies, gambling on his own team,
01:08all of that kind of stuff would make him someone, maybe not even the Browns,
01:12let's just say big picture NFL, would deem untouchable?
01:16That's a great question.
01:17I know, I'm confident that a bunch of teams would have stayed away.
01:23I think the Browns would have, just having heard Todd Munkin talk about it,
01:26I don't think Andrew Barry would have saddled his coach with a guy that Munkin had such strong feelings about.
01:33Not the guy, but the issue.
01:37You know, I know how tied in all these sports leagues are now to gambling,
01:42but that's like the one scandal that's really difficult for an organization to digest and live with and manage,
01:50and if it's your starting quarterback, there would just be too many questions for me.
01:53Now, I'm sure the calculus changes at some point if it's a fifth-round pick or a seventh-round pick,
01:58and you think the kid's the top ten pick, you know, that changes things.
02:02But I think the vast majority of NFL teams would have stayed away.
02:08The other part of this, too, for me, because every time we're bringing his name up with the Browns,
02:13was why would the Browns want to get involved in more drama?
02:17To me, that just doesn't make any sense.
02:21Well, because you're looking for a quarterback.
02:22I mean, that's the only reason, right?
02:24And we saw what they did in 2022, you know, there's plenty of drama there,
02:30and they thought Deshaun Watson was the guy that was going to put him over the hump.
02:34And, you know, obviously they're not the same situations,
02:38but teams do a lot of, bend a lot of rules and bend over backward
02:43if you think the quarterback can be a franchise quarterback.
02:47So, I mean, that's, to me, it's as simple as that.
02:49Not that the Browns would have, but if any team would have, including the Browns,
02:53that's why, because you think the kid's extremely talented,
02:56and, you know, can you get your head around, yeah, he can figure it out,
03:01or, yeah, it was because he was 18 and 19, and when he grows up, it won't be an issue,
03:05whatever, all those things.
03:08I mean, that's the reason.
03:10Scott Patrick joining us on the Wiseheart Right, We Make It Right, Call Kyle Right hotline.
03:14Scott, do you think there has been a change in some of the drafting philosophy
03:22and also player acquisition philosophy inside of the Cleveland Browns organization?
03:26It just seems like character is, for lack of a better way to put this,
03:30is starting to matter a little bit more from the outside looking in.
03:33Yeah, I don't know.
03:37I get where you're going.
03:38And, you know, when we listened to Jimmy Haslam, it really stood out to me.
03:44When he talked in the hallway, you know, in the lobby of team headquarters,
03:48when they fired Kevin Stefanski last year,
03:50he talked about all the good things Andrew Barry had done,
03:53why he's keeping Andrew, and, you know, rattle off, all these moves he'd made.
03:58You know, Malik Collins and the Joe, or the Greg Newsom trade for Tyson Campbell.
04:03And he kept saying, you know, Malik's a good guy, and Tyson Campbell's a good guy,
04:07and all the draft picks are good guys.
04:10And, first of all, I get a little iffy when somebody says that
04:14because you don't necessarily know anybody, let alone a 22-year-old kid, right?
04:20Is he really a good guy?
04:22Is something going to pop up?
04:23You know, obviously there was a situation with Quinchon Junkins that, you know,
04:28I'm sure they thought he was a great guy.
04:30You know, I'm not saying he wasn't, and we know what happened with, you know, legally.
04:33But my point is, Jimmy Haslam has made it a focus.
04:37Now, I don't know if that's going to keep the Browns away from, you know,
04:42getting guys with some character issues.
04:43I think that's just part of the game.
04:45But Jimmy Haslam likes to point out that these are good guys,
04:49and he likes to talk about character.
04:52So there might have been some leanings or some changes in the philosophy.
04:59But I just get wary about getting carried away with it because, you know,
05:04how the league works and society works.
05:05Tomorrow we could be talking about a guy that people have called a good guy
05:09being in some kind of trouble.
05:10That's just what happens.
05:13All right, let's go back and talk about the good stuff here, the trade.
05:17Okay, Miles Garrett, Jared Verse, just your initial reaction to the trade.
05:23Yeah, I mean, I was surprised.
05:25We talked before we went down last week, and I knew there was a chance it could happen.
05:29I think I put it like 70-30 it wouldn't happen just because the Browns have been
05:33so adamant about it not happening.
05:37And I didn't believe you could get quality or equal value for a player that's a
05:42Hall of Fame caliber player like Miles, and I just don't think you usually get.
05:45I think you never get equal value back.
05:48So it's difficult for me to think about trading somebody like that.
05:53But I did think, and we talked about it last week, if you're going to do it,
05:55you had to get a young pass rusher back, and that's what they got.
05:58And then they got, you know, three draft picks.
06:00Now the draft picks are going to, I would expect, to be at the bottom of rounds.
06:04They're spread out over the coming years.
06:06So this is obviously a trade for the future.
06:10And Andrew Barry talked about short-term and long-term benefits.
06:13And I don't think you can make this trade, and Andrew Barry wouldn't have made this
06:16trade without Jared Verse.
06:17It gives you a chance to have a really good defense still this year at a premium position.
06:23So I think that was a must, and I think Jared Verse is a really good player.
06:27But for this trade to be, I think, a success for the Browns, Jared Verse has to be like a
06:33top-four defensive end in the league.
06:36He needs to be a multi-time, multiple-time All-Pro because I think the draft picks are going
06:42to be low enough that the guys you get or the trades that help you make aren't going
06:47to be enough.
06:47It's going to have to be about Jared Verse at that position being an absolute stud.
06:53And I know he's off to that great start with the Rams.
06:56And I like what I watch on film, but it's going to have to continue.
06:59He's going to have to get better.
07:00He's going to have to add, you know, some pieces to his pass rush puzzle and add some,
07:06you know, complimentary moves.
07:07And I think he can, and I, you know, the character stuff's supposed to be great on him,
07:11and he works hard and all those things.
07:12So there's a chance, but he is going to have to be a great player, in my estimation, for
07:18it to be worth trading Miles Garrett, because you're not getting better this year by not
07:22having Miles.
07:22You're probably not going to be better in 2027 because it's a late first-round draft pick,
07:28I'm assuming.
07:28So this trade is, again, about the future.
07:31And I get that, but as the Browns are trying to straddle this win now and prepare and keep
07:36an eye on the future, you know, getting rid of Miles Garrett makes it, I think, more difficult
07:40to win right now.
07:42Mandatory minicamp this week out in Berea.
07:44Scott, where do we sit on the quarterback competition?
07:47I think it's pretty even, you know, and I struggle to read too much into any one of
07:53these practices in May and June with no pads.
07:57And until this week, a lot of guys not there.
08:02But you've seen both quarterbacks, I would say, have their ups and downs.
08:06I think Deshaun Watson's looked better in some of the practices we've been out there
08:09for, and we haven't been out there for all of them.
08:11And last week, I thought Shadir Sanders looked better, clearly better, than Deshaun Watson
08:17in that practice.
08:18And we've talked about it on here, guys.
08:20I think it makes all the sense in the world to go with Shadir Sanders, right?
08:23Younger, potential, under contract, cheap contract.
08:27We've seen Deshaun Watson get hurt too many times.
08:30I think if it's close, you go with the young guy and Shadir Sanders.
08:35And that's where I feel they are right now.
08:37And Todd Munkin said as much last week, just from day to day, he changes on who he thinks
08:40is in the lead.
08:41So I fully expect this to go to training camp, this competition to go to training camp.
08:46And I don't think it's going to be like three days into training camp.
08:48I think you're going to have a week or two and joint practices and maybe even a preseason
08:53game or two before a decision is made.
08:56And I think the fact that Shadir Sanders, let's say he's closed the gap, for lack of
09:01a better term, I think it's a good sign for him.
09:04And I think organizationally, I would lean toward Shadir Sanders if it stays that way.
09:09And the fact that he's young and in a new system and is showing that progress, I would
09:15think the Browns would have optimism that that progress would continue once you get to
09:19training camp and he will look even better than he has for the two months of the offseason
09:23program.
09:24Scott, I'm going to throw history at you here.
09:26It's just food for thought, OK?
09:28Go back and think about last year when we thought the quarterback situation in the room
09:32was going to look like when the season started and it flipped.
09:36Like, wait, how did we get to, you know, Gabriel starting?
09:40And there's a part of me that wonders if they get into camp here and they see something else
09:46becomes available, could they flip?
09:49How committed do you think they are to where they are?
09:51I know they say they're committed right now to where they're at in this quarterback
09:54competition, but would it surprise you?
09:58And that's more the question.
09:59Would it surprise you if it's somebody else leading this team to start the season next
10:03year?
10:04Like, if they went outside the organization to find their starting quarterback for week
10:09one this September?
10:10Yeah.
10:11Yes, I would be stunned.
10:13OK.
10:13All right.
10:14I just think, I mean, the reason for that, Andy, is I thought they would do that in March
10:19and they didn't.
10:21So, if you didn't do it in March, April, May, June, what's going to change?
10:26You know, unless you just look at both these guys, Shudder and Deshaun, and go, they can't
10:31do it.
10:32But I don't feel that's where they are.
10:35Just throwing it out there.
10:36Food for thought.
10:37Because you never know what's going to happen with this team.
10:39That's the thing.
10:39Well, you don't.
10:40And I don't know what that option would be.
10:42You know, do you circle back to Mac Jones, who I'm pretty sure signed an extension with the
10:4749ers?
10:47Like, I don't know what that, you know, I guess Anthony Richardson would be out there.
10:51That was the name that was kind of floating around in my head.
10:54Was Anthony Richardson.
10:54Yeah, I mean, I like, yeah, I liked the idea of him months ago, but I don't think the Browns
10:59are in the same thinking as I am.
11:02Or me.
11:03Or Jeff, for sure.
11:05Oh, without question, Jeff.
11:06Oh, my God.
11:06Jeff would go crazy if they got Anthony.
11:07He'd be the happiest guy in town.
11:09Oh, I think we would have to, like, I think he would faint.
11:11We'd have to fan him off.
11:12Yeah.
11:13I did.
11:13I always thought that was appealing, but, you know, they could have got him, right?
11:17It wouldn't have been hard to get him out of Indianapolis, and as far as I know, the Browns
11:20didn't make any effort to do that.
11:22Scott, is there anything else in minicamp that fans should be keeping an eye on?
11:25Any other position battles we're not thinking of?
11:27Yeah.
11:27Well, I don't know so much position battle.
11:29Well, I mean, the offensive line, right, still, Todd said last week that it's going to go into
11:33training camp, and he knows four of the starters.
11:35He feels good about four of them, but we don't know the fifth guy, and the fifth guy is going
11:40to determine if Elton Jenkins plays center or right guard, right?
11:43If it's Parker Brailsford, who wins a center job, then Elton Jenkins will play right guard.
11:46If they need Jenkins to be the center, then they've got to find a right guard.
11:50So, however that works.
11:51So, you've got to keep an eye on that.
11:53To me, what Bear's watching is if they feel the need to go get another defensive end.
11:59And I know that you obviously brought in verse to take Miles' place, but I thought even with
12:05Miles, they were a guy short at that position.
12:08And I think Andrew Barry will spend these next three days, I mean, I know he's done it the
12:12entire off-season program, but we'll really spend the next few days in minicamp studying
12:16that end group and saying, okay, can one of the young guys emerge and be that fourth
12:21pass rusher we need?
12:22Or maybe it's Julian Okora, the veteran.
12:24Is he that guy?
12:26Or do you take the break for the six weeks off and go look for somebody to come in?
12:32Because you have Verse and Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire.
12:35And then I feel you have question marks, and I also think those guys are real similar
12:39in how they rush.
12:40They're physical rushers.
12:42I wouldn't mind seeing a speed guy who can get around the corner.
12:47I think that would complement the group of pass rushers they have right now.
12:53Scott, where do you think we sit on, and Scott Petrack joining us from the Chronicle
12:57Telegram, you can read it at brownzone.com.
13:00So, Denzel Ward saying he wants to stay here, he doesn't want to go anywhere, this is home.
13:04How likely do you think it is that Denzel Ward is here, let's say, to start the season?
13:11I think it's almost guaranteed that he's here to start the season.
13:17And the reason I say that is they don't have somebody to step into his role.
13:22He hasn't been there all off-season program.
13:24I'm watching D'Angelo Ross, and this is not, you know, I'm not trying to take shots at D'Angelo
13:29Ross, but he's not Denzel Ward.
13:30And he's given up plays in OTAs, and I'm thinking to myself, man, they missed Denzel.
13:36So, I think if they're going to try to have the top five defense as their plan, that requires
13:43Denzel Ward to be here.
13:44And I don't think you can get another starting cornerback that caliber before the season if
13:50you get rid of Denzel.
13:51So, I just don't see it happening.
13:54What I could see is that the Browns start off really poorly, and somebody makes the Browns
13:58an offer they can't refuse before the trade deadline, and you're not going to go to the
14:02playoffs, and Denzel's going to be 30, and he's going to have one year left on his contract
14:06and probably want a new contract.
14:08Then I could see a scenario, but I don't see it before the start of the season.
14:12Did you get a chance to read the stuff that Wyatt Teller was talking about over the weekend,
14:16too, and save trade on the start?
14:19Yeah, I listened to that clip.
14:20Yeah, so what do you think of that?
14:22It's just the whole notion of, you know, Teller had such a good run here, his family had a
14:27good run here, and then at the end, it turned a little bitter.
14:30Yeah, it certainly did sour.
14:32My first thought is, Wyatt Teller says all kinds of stuff, right?
14:36He always did, and that's one of the things I liked about him, I like talking to him, he
14:39always gives you something.
14:42I think it's a little sad, I don't know if that's the right word, but that it ended like
14:47that because he was beloved, and he was so good, and that offensive line was so good.
14:53I don't know if inside the organization, he acted like the offensive line was, they thought
14:59that was the reason for all the things that go wrong.
15:01I don't know if Andrew Barry thought that way.
15:04I never got that impression.
15:05Andrew Barry thought that offensive line would continue to be good, and it got old in a hurry,
15:10and I think that's on Andrew Barry, but it's interesting, it's going to be interesting
15:16to see what Wyatt Teller does.
15:18Does he bounce back to where he was a couple of years ago, a pro-bowl, all-pro type of
15:21guy,
15:22or, because he hasn't played as well, especially last year, he would admit it, he didn't play
15:26as well, he's had some injuries.
15:27Is he able to find a bounce back, or is this just the next step in the end of a
15:34career,
15:35which is natural, but I think he's hoping that he can put that out for a while.
15:41Mike Hall got banged up at one of the OTAs, anything to be concerned about?
15:45No, I asked Mike that on Saturday at the Denzel Ward softball game, and he said he's fine,
15:51he's going back to wearing the brace on that right knee, and he said he's good to go.
15:56He practiced last week, looked pretty full to me after limping off the week before,
16:02so there must be some instability in that knee that they think, you know, him wearing
16:06the brace takes care of that, and he's able to perform.
16:10Did you get to swing the bat at all at the softball game?
16:13No, but this is the first year in like, I don't know, 35 years that I haven't played
16:18softball, so I kind of missed it.
16:19Oh, man.
16:20Oh.
16:21I know, where was the retirement party?
16:23Yeah, I didn't see it.
16:24We'll have one for you here.
16:25We'll do it for, when we're out of camp, we'll have a retirement.
16:28Well, yeah, we'll hold on.
16:29We'll bring you a cupcake.
16:29How does that sound?
16:30Right, we can have it at Dover Gardens.
16:32They were our sponsor at the end.
16:33There you go.
16:33Beautiful.
16:34Now, you're good.
16:34It's always good to play.
16:35We'll do it there, and then we'll do it at the 19th hole as well.
16:37It'll be a good time.
16:37Yeah, it's way more fun there, isn't it?
16:40Scott, thank you.
16:40Of course, you know, we're reading you all the time, Chronicle Telegram, and of course,
16:43BrownZone.com.
16:44We always appreciate you.
16:45Thanks, man.
16:45You're the man.
16:46Thanks.
16:47Thanks, guys.
