00:00he covers the browns for the chronicle telegram hello scott what's going on guys how are you sir
00:05i'm good perhaps coming up on thursday dude here we go it is here we go how far do the
00:12browns trade down scott i don't think they go below i don't know 12 seems like an easy number
00:19and that i like that spot for him you don't want to go too far down um you know the
00:25interesting
00:25thing about this draft is you keep hearing different things like i think as eric da costa
00:30the ravens gm said there's a fall off in offensive linemen after the midpoint of the first round
00:35and then you hear well the top the top part of the draft isn't great but as you get deeper
00:41it
00:41becomes a better draft so i think this draft is all over the place i think the browns always want
00:47to
00:47trade back but i do think you got to be careful going too far back scott whether they trade back
00:53or maybe can't find a trade partner and end up staying put at six what do you think is first
01:00up for them in terms of like priority wise what they're looking to to attack when it comes to the
01:06two maybe biggest needs that they have yeah i mean my view hasn't changed better it's receiver and left
01:12tackle we could argue about which one needs to go higher uh just in general i think left tackle is
01:18more important than receiver you know i'm not saying receiver is not important but
01:22uh i'd be stunned if well i think stunned is the right word if they don't address both those
01:29positions by number 39 so maybe there's a wild card thrown in there with receiver and tackle but i
01:37would think with the first three picks assuming they make three picks by 39 one's a receiver and one's a
01:43tackle let me let me lay out a different scenario for you here if you trade back and leave the
01:52land
01:52of the elite prospect and most folks seem to think that that maybe might be seven guys and seven guys
01:59only are you making a mistake yeah i love that question joe and i think thank you very much scott
02:07you're welcome i think a lot of times you can say that i think for me this draft that's where
02:13this
02:13draft is different and you have to be careful paying too much attention to needs and andrew barry
02:19has stressed that but i can't get away from that the needs are on the offensive side of the ball
02:26and the biggest ones are what we just talked about tackling receiver so if you're going to address those
02:34positions then i think that's where trading down helps because i'm not convinced carnell tate or
02:40mckay lemon or monroe freeling or kate proctor are worth the number six pick i like all those guys a
02:46lot
02:47better at number 12 not that they're all be there but at number 12 so that's why i think for
02:51the
02:51browns it just makes even more sense to move down because you get extra assets right whether it's a
02:58pick this year or pick next year multiple picks over the two years and then you get who could be
03:04the number one player at the position that you want so that's why i think trading down makes sense
03:10now if they stayed at six maybe they love one of those guys maybe they think kate's the answer six
03:14or lemon or freeling or maybe they go defense at number six but that's where i think this draft is
03:21interesting for the browns because most of the top guys except for fernando mendoza and i guess
03:28jeremy love are defensive guys and i don't think they take love in the top six so do they take
03:35a
03:35defensive guy there or trade back and just take the best player at the position you want anyway or you
03:41need anyway and you get these other picks that's why i think it sets up perfectly as long as a
03:47team
03:47is willing to trade up to number six to go chase likely one of those defensive guys scott you talked
03:54about being stunned if they didn't address their two biggest needs in the first three picks that they
04:00have how stunned would you be if they used six on say a caleb downs if he if he's there
04:09or a david
04:10bailey if he were to slide or even a jeremiah love if he was to slide knowing what everyone's saying
04:16about jeremiah love sure i wouldn't be stunned by caleb downs at six and again i struggle with how much
04:25credence to give to needs and i get andrew barry when he talks about longer term when you're building
04:31the roster and you take the best player but i do think i know the gms factor in need all
04:37the time
04:38when they're making these picks especially these high picks downs you could talk me into downs because
04:43you could talk me into safety being a need now they have grant delfitt but he's entering the last
04:48year of his contract they tendered ronnie hickman you know the restricted free agent but that's a one
04:54year deal uh and then they don't really have a third safety and they play so much there's three
04:59safeties he did with jim schwartz i think they'll do it again with uh mike grutenberg it's going that way
05:05across the league so caleb downs would fill a need and on if you look at the defense as a
05:12whole i think
05:12safety is the one spot where you could say yeah that's a need pick so that's why that wouldn't surprise
05:17me downs at six wouldn't shock me uh love would because you know they took judkins high last year
05:25i think there is a sentiment that you have to be careful how high you take running backs even even
05:30if
05:30you think this guy's special i think you still have to weigh that positional value into it uh and
05:36then if you took an ad rusher it would just scream we're going to ask about miles garrett for the
05:42you
05:42know a miles garrett trade for the next couple of months and and i don't think um i just don't
05:47think
05:47you'd go draft that guy if you expect to have miles garrett and you know you have one stud passer
05:54not that you couldn't you know not that another awesome edge rusher wouldn't help this defense
05:59but that feels way down the list of needs and priorities scott petrack joining us from the
06:05chronicle telegram his work can be read at brownzone.com miles was at the calves game the other
06:11day and then went to social media and put a picture of his shoes on a plane he's flying out
06:16of town
06:16which means he won't be on the field coming up okay that's our that's all right i get all that
06:21is this team better served scott by getting all you can get for miles or is it better served by
06:30keeping him at the age of 30 and rolling the dice yeah i haven't changed jeff i still think they're
06:38better better off keeping miles garrett i think he's going to be an elite player in this league for
06:46the next five years and by then the bronze expect to contend right i mean they hope the contenders
06:53will lose this year i think they expect to contend starting in 2027 and i think miles garrett is still
07:00going to be if not the best defensive player one of the top five defensive players as long as i
07:05can see
07:05so i don't think they will ever get the proper value for him i think it's really difficult when you
07:13trade hall of fame players um i think it hurts your organization i heard they get hurt your locker
07:19room um and i think any trade they make would be with a team that expects to contend for super
07:25ball and those draft picks aren't as valuable uh you know because you're picking at the bottom of
07:30the rounds so i just don't think it makes sense i think the they're still committed to keeping miles
07:36now obviously the tweak of the language uh creates speculation it creates the opportunity
07:42for them to trade him you know between june 1st and the start of the season if something changed
07:48you know maybe if miles expressed that he didn't want to be here any longer or whatever they see the
07:54off season going a certain way um but i don't i believe that that's not their plan and i believe
07:59it's
08:00the best move for them not to trade miles garrett so i guess off of that scott how much are
08:06you
08:06reading into miles potentially at least it looks that way that he was here for the calves game this
08:12weekend and already on the move not not necessarily going to be here this week for this this mini camp
08:18that they're opening up like if we find out and again we might find out that he didn't meet with
08:24tom munka while he was here who knows but i guess until we have that information are you reading into
08:29that at all and and and maybe maybe more so from miles side in terms of like contractually or
08:35if he's looking for more money now that he's now like the 10th highest paid non-quarterback that type
08:39of thing i could see there being a contract bump right to get him back where he's the highest paid
08:49defensive player close to the highest paid defensive player um even though it's only what a year removed
08:55from him signing that contract so that wouldn't stun me i don't think any of this is part of a
09:00grand
09:01plan for miles garrett he loves to go to calves games right does he owns a portion right right of
09:08the calves uh he loves basketball he loves to be there he's traditionally not been a participant in
09:15the off-season program that is voluntary he's got a lot of stuff going on you know he's dating a
09:21olympian they got a lot of stuff to do this is the time of year to do it um he
09:26always comes back to
09:27camp in unbelievable shape i don't think there's anything that miles is missing i don't think there's
09:33a lot miles is missing from not being here in april so i don't read anything into it
09:40you you good with deshaun shadour and dylan and whatever else might be brought in at this point
09:46because it doesn't appear that there are a whole lot of other options yeah that's a tough question
09:54jeff i wasn't good with it when the offseason started i was convinced that they would try to
09:59upgrade that position um and quickly learn that that wasn't their plan yeah and i understand the
10:05circumstances that 46 million guaranteed that sean watson means he's on this roster and if you're on
10:11this roster especially that position there's a chance you're going to play i i understand wanting
10:17to see more of shadour sanders i like plenty of stuff i saw from sanders last year i thought he
10:24improved in multiple areas uh but you can't say the way he played last year convinces you he's going to
10:30be a big time starting quarterback you just didn't see enough and that's not even shadour's fault that's
10:35just in my opinion the reality so i get why it's shaping up like this uh but i still think
10:43if you're
10:43todd monk and you go man it's my first head coaching job i'd like more a more solid answer at
10:50that
10:50position but it doesn't appear it's going that way i think they'll add somebody in the draft i don't
10:54think that's likely to change the scope of this competition i think still think it's going to come
11:00down to shadour sanders and deshaun watson and i think it should lean towards shadour sanders because
11:04there's way more upside with him being your starter than there is with deshaun watson
11:10scott with the quarterback competition maybe more specific to the guys themselves who do you think
11:17needs to win the job most like forget about like how we feel about it or who we think should
11:23win
11:23who do you think among them needs to win the job the most that's interesting i mean you can make
11:29a
11:30really strong argument for the two main guys if deshaun watson is hoping to continue his career
11:36which i assume he is and he's rehabbed really hard to get back from the twice torn achilles he needs
11:42to
11:42be on the field right for somebody for some team outside cleveland to consider him as a starting
11:50possibility in 2027 right i don't think he cannot play since 24 and then some teams considers him a
11:58viable option next year that just doesn't make sense so he needs to be on the field
12:02shadour sanders is a fifth round pick with i don't know if this is the right word but a lot
12:07of baggage
12:08right just there's a lot comes with shadour sanders he's gonna have i feel like he's gonna have a small
12:14window to get a real chance to be a starter in this league and his best chance could be this
12:19year with
12:20the browns so i think it works i think it's a high level for both these guys of urgency i
12:27would lean
12:27towards sanders just because he's younger um and i and i think it i don't know that means more but
12:36i think this is his chance his best chance and i'm sure he's you know committed to taking advantage of
12:42it
12:42i agree with that point you just made and to me shadour it reminds me of sam howell when he
12:49was in
12:49washington you know a later round pick washington went hey let's go for it and he started that rookie
12:55year showed some glimpses and then just never got that chance again so i i agree with you i think
13:01it's
13:01really critical for shadour to get that job because otherwise he might be on that path of i'm fighting
13:06for a gig the rest of my career you never know scott right i mean that's that's how it feels
13:11you know
13:12and yeah and he's got such a big personality and even a big following i mean we've experienced that
13:18um in the last year that it would i think it's gonna be hard for him to live as a
13:24backup and
13:25maybe he becomes and maybe he gets comfortable with that if it ever comes to that and the other
13:31stuff goes away but i kind of view shooter sanders as the starter and then we don't know what else
13:37happens so this is his chance um i think this is his chance you have a mock coming out on
13:44brownzone.com
13:45you're staying away from such things uh i'm gonna do and i hope it's up tomorrow it's either
13:49tomorrow afternoon or wednesday or wednesday morning terrific take a look for it at brownzone.com scott
13:54always a pleasure thanks scott thanks scott petrack joining us on the make it right call
