00:00We are going to head out to Akron right now at the Browns Charity Golf Outing.
00:04It's our friend Scott Petrach from the Chronicle Telegram, brownzone.com,
00:07and he is on the Wise Heart Right.
00:09We make it right.
00:10Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:13Scott Petrach, my friend, how are you?
00:15I'm good. How are you?
00:16Nice day to play golf, finally.
00:18We've got a little bit of summer here, huh?
00:20And you're hitting them.
00:23Guys do this every year.
00:24I don't think I'm going to be hitting them.
00:26I'm staring at, I don't know if it's the west or the north course right now.
00:30Is there water?
00:31It's gorgeous out here.
00:32Yeah, there is water.
00:33That's the north.
00:34Yeah, I know it's not the south, yeah.
00:38Yeah, so, yeah, it's a gorgeous day to play golf.
00:41Open to play tomorrow.
00:43It's a nice day for the Browns to have their outing.
00:46You should just sneak out after they're done.
00:47Yeah, just nobody loves us.
00:49Oh, yeah, put out the Browns.
00:51I always have my clubs if anybody bails out at the last minute.
00:54You never know.
00:55Someone might pull an ACL.
00:57Always bring your putter.
00:58You've got to be prepared.
00:59June 1st, things can happen.
01:03Is Miles Garrett on the Browns by tomorrow, by the end of the week?
01:08What do you think?
01:09I still think he is.
01:11I get it.
01:12I get all the speculation.
01:14I understand why.
01:16The way the contract was tweaked to allow that to happen.
01:20I still think the Browns want him here.
01:23I've got no indication otherwise.
01:27Now, if Miles is behind the scenes, demanding a trade or requesting a trade
01:32or making it well known that he doesn't want to be here anymore,
01:36then I think that could either force the hand of the Browns
01:39or move them in that direction.
01:42But I still think he's going to be here.
01:45He's too good a player.
01:46They didn't trade him last year when they could have,
01:48and it would have made more sense,
01:50and then they gave him that huge contract.
01:52So I still think he's going to be here,
01:55but it's going to be an interesting time period here to see if something happens.
02:00I know that that's what everybody's talking about,
02:03and I completely get it.
02:05I still think they're better off not trading him.
02:07And the thing is, if they decide to trade him,
02:10to me that really signals they're not going to compete in 2026,
02:16unless there's something in this trade that I'm not forecasting, right?
02:19So if Jimmy has him willing to take that on,
02:21to go 3-14 and 5-12 and then have another bad season,
02:26I don't know if he is.
02:28So I think there would have to be a lot of things that would have to line up
02:31in order for a Miles Garrett trade to happen.
02:34Scott, with that thought in mind,
02:36I don't think you make a Miles Garrett trade unless you're getting draft assets
02:41for next year,
02:43and the best draft asset for next year would be your own pick
02:47if you don't do very well.
02:50I would think the only way you move him
02:52is because you're thinking you're getting a quarterback in next year's draft.
02:57I think you're right, Jeff.
02:59The problem is, if you trade him, you're trading him to a contender
03:04because that's the team that would want him, right?
03:08And then he would improve whatever Jimmy goes to.
03:10He's got a no-trade clause in the contract,
03:13so he's not going to go to a bad team.
03:15So let's say you get two number ones that are the number 30 pick in 2027
03:21and the number 32 pick in 2028.
03:24Those picks aren't getting you a quarterback.
03:26They're not moving you up high enough to get a quarterback.
03:28So that's why I struggle with it.
03:31You know, I'm not saying that there's not value to those picks,
03:35and there's plenty of people that disagree with me
03:37and think they should trade Miles.
03:38But if the goal is, okay, you have these two picks
03:42and you have your own pick,
03:43and it'll help you get up to get the number one pick in the draft
03:45or the number three pick in the draft,
03:47I just don't know if that is enough to do that, right?
03:51And the value of the pick not being for another 11 months or 10 months,
03:57like that decreases the value as opposed to if you traded
04:00and gotten a pick in 2026, right?
04:03And I know why they didn't do it in the June 1st aspect of it,
04:07but there's just a lot of things here that make me think,
04:10are they going to get proper value back for Miles?
04:12And that's been my issue the whole time when we started talking about it
04:15after the 25 season.
04:17Are they going to get proper value back for Miles Garrett?
04:20And I still struggle to think they will.
04:24Okay, so if you were the general manager,
04:28what would proper return on a trade be?
04:35To make you happy?
04:37To make you say yes?
04:38To make me happy would be three number ones and a quality player,
04:41probably an edge rusher.
04:43And I don't think the Browns would get that.
04:45And when we talk about quality picks,
04:47I think you'd want something as high as possible, obviously.
04:51And you're not going to get that unless that team you traded to
04:54had a disaster of a season that they're not expecting to have.
04:58So is number 22 and then 28 and an eight-sack edge rusher
05:06enough to trade Miles Garrett?
05:08I mean, that's what the discussion is, right?
05:12And to me, the bottom line is, and I've said this to you guys before,
05:15if the Browns are able to contend, let's even say the window opens in 28,
05:20do you think Miles Garrett can still be a top-five defensive player
05:23in this league in 28 and would be a guy that helps you get to the Super Bowl?
05:27I say yes because he's a physical freak and he's the best player in the league,
05:31the best defensive player in the league right now
05:33and has been for the last few years.
05:34If you think there's going to be a fall-off and two or three years from now
05:38if Miles isn't the same player, then it makes more sense to move him
05:43because you're getting younger, you're getting younger assets,
05:46and when you're going to be good, Miles isn't going to be the same factor.
05:49I still think he's going to be the best or one of the top three
05:53or four defensive players in the league two and three years from now,
05:56which means the value you would get isn't going to match
05:59because wherever he's going to be, you'd be like, man, this team,
06:03the Browns, would be better if they still had Miles Garrett.
06:06Scott, there's a lot of buzz here, and Scott Petrack joining us
06:09from the Chronicle-Telegram, brownzone.com,
06:12where you can read all of Scott's coverage of the team.
06:14A lot of buzz about Miles possibly being moved.
06:18Do you think Miles is behind that, or do you think the Browns are behind that?
06:24And I don't mean the buzz, but I mean, let's just, if there's smoke, there's fire.
06:29Who's setting the fire? Is it the Browns or is it Miles?
06:32No, I think it would be Miles, and I'm not saying it is Miles.
06:35I'm saying if there is legitimate trade talk, which I don't know if there is, right?
06:42This is all just speculation because of the date.
06:46If there is legitimate trade talk, and if Miles Garrett were eventually traded,
06:51which could happen as soon as today, right, I think it would be driven by Miles Garrett.
06:55I don't think the Browns' thinking has changed.
06:58I think, you know, when Andrew Barry said that Miles Garrett was going to be a Brown for life
07:03and go straight from Cleveland to Canton, I don't think his thinking has changed.
07:06I don't think Jimmy Haslam is any more willing to go through another losing season
07:11now than he was a year ago and two years ago.
07:14What would have changed is Miles re-went back to his,
07:20I don't want to be here anymore, and I want to play for a contender,
07:22and this team isn't ready to contend, and he would force the Browns' hand.
07:28That's my opinion.
07:29That's how this would come about, and then the Browns finally said,
07:33okay, he doesn't want to be here.
07:35Let's get as much as we can, whatever.
07:37I still think they would fight that, but if it came to fruition,
07:40I do believe that it would be Miles' camp and Miles pushing for that.
07:48Give me a percentage.
07:49Think he's on the team next year, yes or no?
07:52I do.
07:52I mean, I think it's, I mean, I could be, like, way off here,
07:57but I think it's, like, 70% that he's on the team, maybe even higher than that.
08:02My opinion hasn't changed.
08:04Like, I felt this way when they tweaked the contract language,
08:07and I have not heard anything that has made me change my mind.
08:10Again, I could be wrong, and something could happen at 4 o'clock,
08:13and maybe I'll find something out in the next half an hour that makes it go,
08:16shoot, I've got to get ready for this.
08:19But, like I said, I don't think the Browns' thinking changed,
08:23and the only way it would change is if Miles is really pushing for trade.
08:26That's my opinion.
08:27That's my read of this situation.
08:29And maybe it's gotten to that point, but I have not heard that it has.
08:34Do you think there's something the Browns are really keeping an eye on
08:37around the league, hoping that maybe a position group takes a couple of hits here,
08:42guys that, you know, I don't know, wide receiver, whatever position,
08:46and they're looking to sign somebody who might be a casualty today?
08:51Yeah, it's interesting.
08:53You know, we've been focused, though, for such a long time on receiver,
08:58and I think that's probably, it's got to be lessened after the draft, right?
09:03You would think so.
09:03Bringing those two guys in the first, you know, 39 picks.
09:06I still think it's screaming for another veteran, though.
09:09Yeah, I hear you.
09:10So I wouldn't close the door to it.
09:12I just, I think it moves down the list of priorities.
09:14I think even with Miles Garrett, defensive end is worth watching.
09:18You know, they tried to sign A.J. Epinesa,
09:20and that didn't work because he failed his physical.
09:22Well, it feels like there's a hole there to me.
09:27You know, linebacker, they're really young at linebacker outside of Quincy Williams.
09:32Could they add somebody there?
09:33Running back, they're really young behind Quinchon, right?
09:36And Quinchon looked good last week doing the individual drills.
09:39So I know that they're counting on him, and he should be fine to be the number one guy.
09:43But they're really young behind him as Bill Sampson, you know, second-year guys.
09:48They're all really young.
09:49And, you know, those are just a couple of positions you're thinking,
09:53okay, before training camp, I could see an end.
09:55I could see a veteran running back at some point, maybe even during training camp.
09:59And then, like you said, you could keep an eye on receiver.
10:03I don't know.
10:04The other part of the story here, too, for the Browns as we move forward,
10:07like, do you think there's anybody out there that they might have their eyes on
10:11that they could be trying to bring in that could be, you know, a cap casualty
10:15or somebody that gets released here positionally, too?
10:20Yeah, I mean, you know, let's assume Miles is still here.
10:24Again, I think it's still end.
10:26Maybe, you know, de-tackle, just because we saw Mike Hall go down last week,
10:30and I know the Browns, the initial thought was that it wasn't serious.
10:34You still have Malik Collins coming off his torn quad last year, right?
10:39So I feel like they might be a little thin there.
10:43I mean, they have some guys, but I could see the defensive line being a position.
10:49You know, I think they're set at corner, but you just never know with that position.
10:53You know, you have Denzel Ward, you have Tyson Campbell.
10:55I really like Miles Harden.
10:57Could they find another nickel?
10:59It was an upgrade there.
11:00I felt like that way going into the draft, and they didn't really find somebody.
11:05You know, so those are the positions I keep an eye on.
11:09Okay.
11:10With that thought in mind, Todd Munkin rolling right along.
11:14Things seem to be going okay.
11:16Do you think, just knowing what we know about him, Scott,
11:20do you think in his mind he's hoping that one of these quarterbacks emerges
11:26over any of the others, or do you think he's completely wide open on this thing?
11:32Oh, I'm sure he's hoping somebody emerges.
11:35Do you think he has somebody in mind who he's thinking,
11:37I hope this is the guy?
11:39Yeah, that's a great question, Jeff.
11:43I don't know that answer.
11:44To me, logically, and we've talked about this,
11:47it makes more sense for it to be Shooter Sanders.
11:50Because he's young, he's cheap,
11:53there's a chance that he could be your future quarterback,
11:56where I just don't see that from Deshaun Watson.
11:59Now, maybe he proves me wrong, and he plays great this year,
12:02and he gets an extension, and he winds up being your guy.
12:03But that feels so unlikely, given everything we've seen
12:07from Deshaun Watson since he's been here,
12:09that I would think Shooter Sanders at least has a chance to fill that role.
12:14So, if I were the Browns and Todd Munkin,
12:16that would be my thinking.
12:18But I think Todd is open to whoever emerges being that guy,
12:23but he wants somebody to emerge.
12:24He does not want to take this thing as deep in the training camp as it could go.
12:29He's talked about hoping to have it decided at the end of the spring.
12:32I just don't know how realistic that is, especially given, you know,
12:37Shooter's only in his second year.
12:38So, it's going to take some time.
12:40It's going to take some time to learn a new offense.
12:42I don't know if you want to make, rush into a decision and decide, you know,
12:46when minicamp ends June 11th.
12:48Like, oh, we know it's going to be Deshaun Watson's going to be the guy we give all the reps
12:52to
12:52in training camp.
12:53To me, that feels like a disservice to Shooter because he's young.
12:58He didn't get a lot of reps last year.
12:59And if Watson gets hurt, which he's gotten hurt plenty of times since he's been here,
13:03all of a sudden you're putting Shooter Sanders in,
13:05and he hasn't gotten those reps with the ones.
13:07He hasn't gotten a lot of time because you committed to Watson too early.
13:11So, I think you need to take this competition at least a week or two into training camp
13:16before you make a final decision and really give somebody the bulk of the reps.
13:20That would be interesting to see how they play this thing out.
13:23Great point.
13:23Scott, we will talk to you soon.
13:25If I were you, I'd just jump on the course.
13:27You know, four-some, five-some, that course is so big.
13:31Nobody's going to know.
13:32Nobody's going to know.
13:32Nobody will know?
13:33No, nobody.
13:34And just blame Phelps if there's a problem.
13:36Just go with Jeff Phelps.
13:37I'll do that.
13:38And they'll be good.
13:38That'll work.
13:39All right, Scott.
13:40We'll read you every day.
13:42ChronicleTelegram, BrownZone.com.
13:43Thanks, buddy.
13:43Thanks, Scott.
13:45Thanks, Elf.
