00:02:36Welcome to Beyond the Tape.
00:02:49I'm your host, Mark Bussan.
00:02:51Welcome to our international viewers.
00:02:53Of course, our viewers across the region and our brothers and sisters in the Isles of
00:02:57Grenada.
00:02:58Yes, it's the end of the week.
00:03:00It's Friday, but the week continues for the police as well as the media.
00:03:04And today, we're going to be talking about, you know, this community policing initiative
00:03:09as well as the initiatives in the schools, especially in the Northern Division.
00:03:13And to take us through today, we have with us Acting Sergeant Kevin Greenidge of the Community
00:03:18Policing Oriented Unit.
00:03:21Good afternoon, Mark.
00:03:22Good afternoon, Toronto.
00:03:23Good afternoon, Toronto.
00:03:24Once again, it's a pleasure to be here.
00:03:26Lots to talk about.
00:03:27It was quite an event for two weeks since the start of this program, this initiative.
00:03:32Indeed.
00:03:33Right.
00:03:34So, let's just get into the meat of the matter here.
00:03:37We've seen the initiative.
00:03:38It's in its second week, as you indicated.
00:03:40Yeah.
00:03:41We've had some incidents across the, you know, the last two weeks, you know, an incident
00:03:47with a student being intercepted with contraband coming into the school, cannabis if you may,
00:03:53as well as a couple of school fights, a police officer being locked in a classroom.
00:03:59You know, some pretty serious things still, some Kingston iron out, of course, I imagine.
00:04:06Yes, Mark.
00:04:07We have a lot to speak about.
00:04:09It was indeed an event for two weeks since the launch of the program by the Commissioner
00:04:16of Police.
00:04:18What boggles me is we're hearing a lot about the negatives, but there's so much positive
00:04:24taking place in terms of this initiative out there that isn't really being showcased
00:04:29or highlighted.
00:04:30Right.
00:04:31So, I'm hoping at the end of this program we are able to at least highlight some of the
00:04:35good work that is taking place as well.
00:04:37Well, I imagine that, you know, yes, we have those negative things that are highlighted,
00:04:43of course, in the media and so on.
00:04:45But from a standpoint of a person in that unit and your interaction with other police
00:04:51officers who are on the ground in those schools, what has the feedback been like generally,
00:04:58not just from the teachers, but even from some of the students?
00:05:01I'm sure that student might come up or two and say, you know, we really appreciate you
00:05:04all here because, you know, before I couldn't eat my lunch, somebody was bullying me or throwing
00:05:09remarks at me.
00:05:10What was that interaction like with the officers and the students?
00:05:15Stefano, Mark, out of Northern North, we continue to be consistent.
00:05:22I think the only variable we see presently is the fact that we were allotted eight officers
00:05:28for the program who are presently in three schools.
00:05:32We have the Brazil secondary, the Malaba secondary and, of course, the school that is now highlighted
00:05:39and showcased the Korea Secondary School in which the young man was arrested for the narcotic.
00:05:45And coming out of that, the principal was a bit distraught, right, because, I mean, I think no principal,
00:05:54no student, no person affiliated to the school would appreciate the negative publicity that is taking place.
00:06:01But I like a challenge. I personally like a challenge.
00:06:05As I told her, this is the beginning and everybody likes a success story.
00:06:11So the only place we can go from here is forward and up.
00:06:14The young man in particular has been showing some level of remorse
00:06:18and he is, in fact, in a program in one of the police school clubs as well to help him get past the situation.
00:06:26Because one would imagine the comments that were on social media
00:06:31pertaining to him to whom he would have come from and, of course, his school.
00:06:37I think it's having an impact on him.
00:06:39And the good thing about it is that he is realistically seeing the consequence of his actions in real time.
00:06:50And it is impacting on him.
00:06:52So it should lead to some positive changes in his life, which is good.
00:06:58We also had a caller that raised concerns about the young man who was also suspended
00:07:04for locking the police officer in a classroom.
00:07:08They were wondering what kind of support is being rendered to that student, if you have any idea.
00:07:16Well, Mark, if I know Sergeant J.C. Small, who is, in fact, responsible for the community-oriented policing unit in the Central Division,
00:07:23he would ensure, through his network, we have Rondell Fields, we have a lot of positive males in that area
00:07:29who will ensure that that young man, too, gets the help he needs.
00:07:32Right? Because I think when we were growing up going to school,
00:07:36locking a police officer in a room was unheard of.
00:07:40Yeah.
00:07:41Right? And the level of respect we had for law enforcement back then,
00:07:46we would not even, if we woke, if we dreamt about it the night, we would wake up and apologize.
00:07:51Right? And somewhere along the line, as a society, we are losing that respect for law enforcement and the rule of law.
00:07:58I know we see children now who are brave and brazen-faced to even take chances like that.
00:08:04Right? But, of course, as I said before, I know Sergeant Small and they would get on top of the situation and treat with it accordingly.
00:08:11Right. And we want to, obviously, reinforce the point that the police officers are not in these schools to intimidate anyone.
00:08:18They are there to keep you safe. If there is something that needs the attention of a police officer outside the remit of the school,
00:08:28they are there to provide that service, to protect and serve. And, of course, it is in the best interest of the students, you know,
00:08:35to feel safe on our environment. Officers understand what is needed. They have been trained to do this.
00:08:42And I suppose, you know, you are familiar with a lot of these officers who are now in these schools.
00:08:51Well, I want another positive, on a positive note as well, one of the officers who was assigned to us in Northern Division was,
00:09:00in fact, a police group member himself. In fact, the officer that made the arrest was, in fact, a police group member,
00:09:08Oropoon police group club when he was young, right, and to have him working side by side with the leader says a lot.
00:09:17And he, too, would have had some challenges when he was growing up. So it is nice to see that a positive cycle is taking place.
00:09:23And at some point, of course, with the knowledge and experience he's acquiring in community-oriented policing section,
00:09:30working out of the schools, he, too, may be ready for leadership in a club or something at some point.
00:09:35Well, that's certainly good to hear that. You know, there was a, quite recent, I think, in the first week of school,
00:09:42there was an incident involving students and a teacher.
00:09:45Right. That would be the Arima North Secondary.
00:09:48Yes. Can you give us an update as to what came of that incident?
00:09:52So, Arima North Secondary, I want to say good place and good evening to Principal Seaton, Ms. Seaton,
00:09:58and Mr. St. Rose, these, the Vice Principal, they are, they set the bar for commitment when it comes to secondary school.
00:10:10And they always communicate, they always try their best to ensure that we, community policing, are in the know.
00:10:16In fact, when the incident occurred, Mr. St. Rose would have communicated to me immediately.
00:10:23The following day, as was indicated by Deputy Commissioner Benjamin, I would have had a team go to the school with me,
00:10:30where we discuss with the general student body that such an incident would not be tolerated,
00:10:39and we have a zero tolerance approach to how we treat with incidents in moving forward in the school.
00:10:45Right. And from then till now, I know we have a meeting, I believe on Monday, with the parents and the teachers at the school
00:10:53to have some amicable solution. Of course, there ought to be consequences for such actions.
00:11:00And even today, I was engaging the young child, the young lady involved.
00:11:04Yeah. And she too, showing a lot of remorse. She does not like the publicity.
00:11:08She's getting out of the incident. Right. And of course, that will now have her thinking about consequences to the actions in the future.
00:11:16Yeah. And I think all young Christians, if you're listening, you're going to school, you know, you have to think before you act in some situations.
00:11:22Yes. Yes.
00:11:23It's very important that you do that. Rationalize what will happen if I do this, because there are going to be consequences to your actions if you step out of line.
00:11:32So please remember that. We want you to go to school, get a good education and come out and have a good job and be a role model for others.
00:11:40As we're on the topic of Arima North, Principal Seaton and Mrs. St. Rose will tell you that there is the myth, the curse of the Form 55.
00:11:52Generally speaking over history, the students of Form 55 usually have behavioral issues and is really the class that nobody looks at to acquire full certificates.
00:12:04Right.
00:12:05Coming out of last term, we would have engaged some parents, the deans and some students from that class who were deemed impossible to get full certificates.
00:12:16And I want the public to understand when we partner with the parents, the school, the police officers involved, there were six young men who, if the teachers were gambling people, they would have bet they would never get their passes.
00:12:30Right. And each of them got no less than five passes, five, six, seven, six young men.
00:12:36Yes.
00:12:37So I want to say to them, congratulations.
00:12:39And it is living proof that once we partner as a community, as a society to push our children in the right directions, we would get a positive outcome.
00:12:50Right. I'll tell you a little story a little later about my experience in school.
00:12:55But let's move on, of course, some very sad news this afternoon.
00:13:00The doctor, Dorothy Williams Chandler, was shot a couple of weeks ago in the Champlain area while returning home with her husband, has passed away early, I think, late last night.
00:13:16And, of course, police are still pursuing one of the suspects.
00:13:21Of course, one of the suspects, Sergeant Greenidge, was shot and killed during that exchange by a prison officer.
00:13:27Of duty.
00:13:28The attempted, you know, the hit.
00:13:31And police are still trying to apprehend the second suspect.
00:13:36So, of course, if you have any information, you can call 999-800-TIPS or the nearest police station with that information that can assist the police, the homicide detectives in apprehending this particular suspect.
00:13:52Remember, see something, say something.
00:13:54Right.
00:13:55We really need that partnership and that support from the public to perform our duties effectively.
00:14:03All right.
00:14:04So, moving on, there was a, you know, police were called a scene yesterday where they found, decomposed the body of a male in a vehicle in the Las Lomas area.
00:14:16The Las Lomas police, of course, responded.
00:14:18And, unfortunately, that person, that young man inside that vehicle in the Canupia area was later identified as 26-year-old Hakeem Gomez from the Maraval area.
00:14:33Again, we are doing our best, we're doing our part, and we're asking our young people to please make better choices in terms of who they interact with, the things they get involved with.
00:14:47There are so many positive things we can get in, sport, theatre, the arts, music, that wouldn't see consequences like these.
00:14:54So, we really imploring upon our young people to make better choices.
00:14:58Yes, indeed.
00:14:59All right.
00:15:00So, yesterday, we talked about situational awareness, and, of course, there was an incident involving, you know, some brothers who apparently went to the supermarket,
00:15:11and they were coming out of their sister's SUV, and they were held up at gunpoint in the car park of a mall in West Trinidad.
00:15:23Their vehicle valued at $380,000 was taken.
00:15:27Their groceries, as well as two rose plants valued at $200, their groceries at $700.
00:15:34And we cannot impress upon you, the viewer and civilians across Trinidad and Tobago, that you need to be extra vigilant.
00:15:43When you come out of the supermarket, walking in the car park, you know, observe your surroundings.
00:15:48You might see people sitting in a vehicle that you don't feel too comfortable with.
00:15:52Anything that's off, maybe make an about-in and go into the grocery.
00:15:56You know, call somebody, tell the security something.
00:16:00Yes, Mark, it's something we continuously speak about situational awareness.
00:16:05And it happens not only in the grocery, it happens when you're coming from the banks, when you're coming from other financial institutions.
00:16:12We are asking people to always be mindful of your surroundings and trust your instinct.
00:16:17If it does not feel right, of course, communicate, go to the nearest station, do something to ensure that you are, in fact, a hard target.
00:16:25Yeah.
00:16:26All right.
00:16:27So, today is day 64 of the state of emergency.
00:16:31And we want to keep you abreast of the latest figures.
00:16:34All right.
00:16:38I'm hoping that, okay, here it is.
00:16:41All right.
00:16:42Day 64.
00:16:43Number of operations, 4,479.
00:16:46Target prior to offenders, 1,696.
00:16:49Searches conducted, 29,422.
00:16:54Traffic operations, 2,929.
00:16:58Total persons arrested thus far, 2,071.
00:17:03Traffic offenses detected, 16,155.
00:17:08Firearms recovered, 60 pistols, 34 revolvers, 18 shotguns, 17 rifles, and 3 air rifles.
00:17:17Ammunition recovered, of course, a total of 1,569.
00:17:20We had a rise in the 9mm area there, 774 rounds, and 117 rounds in the .38 ammunition being recovered there.
00:17:32Dangerous drugs seized, 231,335.92 grams of marijuana, and 7,400.28 grams of cocaine, 1,032 SAC pills, and 15 grams of molly.
00:17:49Sergeant.
00:17:50Yes, Stefan.
00:17:51I'm Mark.
00:17:52What is alarming is the amount of firearms and ammunition we are taking off the streets on a daily basis.
00:17:58And there seems no end to recoveries and seizures.
00:18:03Again, we ask the public, Trinidad and De Bego does not have a fire manufacturing company.
00:18:10These firearms have to be coming from somewhere.
00:18:13And for it to enter our shores and enter our streets, there must be some avenue in which to transport.
00:18:21And these people are not invisible.
00:18:23So again, we imploring with the public to, if you see something, see there must be at least one officer trust that you can, in fact, communicate with to get these firearms off the street.
00:18:34We ought not to wait until some relative or somebody become victim to then want to volunteer information.
00:18:41Right?
00:18:42I'm alarming as well is that close to a quarter million grams of marijuana.
00:18:49Yes.
00:18:50Right?
00:18:51These figures are scary.
00:18:53And as I said before, the more we take, the more we are seeing, so we really need the public's help in this fight if we are to win it.
00:19:02Alright?
00:19:03Let's take a quick look now at our headlines.
00:19:31So those are some of the headlines over the last 24 hours.
00:19:34And if you look at the last media release quickly there, there was an operation in the southwestern division there where we had 28 persons arrested.
00:19:4614 persons.
00:19:4714 persons.
00:19:4814 persons.
00:19:4914 persons.
00:19:5014 persons.
00:19:5114 persons.
00:19:52In this area here.
00:19:53And we had from the Point Forte area for warrants.
00:19:57And in the super area as well.
00:20:00Interestingly enough, I know a number of persons who were held in that roundup for outstanding warrants.
00:20:05Warrants.
00:20:06And the issuance of warrants.
00:20:07So we want to say excellent work by the team down there in the southwestern division.
00:20:12Again, persons, if we know we have outstanding warrants out, why wait for the police to come?
00:20:19Right?
00:20:20It's much easier if you give yourself up with an attorney, whatever the case may be, and ensure that your family are not hindered or hampered or traumatized by police operations.
00:20:30Excellent work by the southwestern division.
00:20:32No doubt.
00:20:33Alright, we're going to take a short break and when we get back we'll take some of your calls and have much more.

00:21:41Mary has bills to pay and takes a chance parking in front of the building at the no parking sign.
00:21:48Mary returns to her car and this is what happens.
00:21:52Mary decides to call when she's five minutes away to let her daughter know that she is close by.
00:22:05But Mary forgot one thing.
00:22:08Boy, second ticket for the day.
00:22:11I don't know, nah?
00:22:12I really don't know.
00:22:13Well, I tell you.
00:22:14After two tickets, Mary just isn't paying attention to her speed.
00:22:19Don't be like Mary.
00:22:20Obey the laws of the rude.
00:22:21A message from the TTPS.
00:22:26Welcome back to the article.
00:22:27There is a business that is not easy to see for her, a public loan scam.
00:22:30It is easy to see for her.
00:22:31I am not going to see it.
00:22:32No, I am not going to see.
00:22:35Don't be like Mary.
00:22:37Obey the laws of the road. A message from the TTPS.
00:22:55Welcome back to Be On The Tape. I'm your host, Mark Basant, joined today by acting Sergeant Kevin Greenidge of the Community Oriented Policing Unit.
00:23:03And of course, before the break, we were talking about situational awareness.
00:23:08You know, when you are in certain areas, you're going to the bank, grocery, etc.
00:23:13And it is no different even if you are walking down the street in busy commercial areas.
00:23:18And a couple of hours ago, just this morning, we have this video of a woman walking down Frederick Street with a gold beer.
00:23:27And this is what happens.
00:23:29So, he pulls off the beer and he walks casually in the other direction.
00:23:38Look at that.
00:23:39I mean, it's the brazeness.
00:23:42Yeah, that is what I have at once.
00:23:44There are people standing right there selling.
00:23:46And this man decides to take the beer off the young lady's hand and walk in the opposite direction.
00:23:53Brazen that there's no consequence for his actions.
00:23:56And I am employing anybody with information to please contact the nearest police station.
00:24:02800 tips, if you know this gentleman.
00:24:04Or if you see him around on that Frederick Street area, I think his physical features are, you know, you could describe if you can't see his face.
00:24:12But at least...
00:24:12His walk, his gate, something about him may be familiar to you.
00:24:16Yes.
00:24:16Mark, of course, this is one of the situations that I would love very, very much to see the words a few moments later.
00:24:25Yes.
00:24:26Right?
00:24:27The brazeness, the bold-facedness, the blatant disregard for the rule of law in this situation.
00:24:33I would love this person very, very much to be apprehended and brought before justice by any legal means.
00:24:39Yes.
00:24:39And we're hopeful that officers for the Spain CID, for the task force, interagency task force, I am employing upon you.
00:24:51Make us proud in this matter.
00:24:53And we will definitely keep you updated.
00:24:55We are hopeful that this person will be held before the day is out and maybe spend the weekend or more in jail.
00:25:02Yes.
00:25:02And we are, of course, depending on the public to make this happen.
00:25:06Yes.
00:25:06All right.
00:25:08So, we are hopeful of a resolution there in a due course.
00:25:12I wanted to kind of ask you about the partnership that you all have created with the La Escuela de Conceder School.
00:25:21So, this is one initiative I'm very proud of.
00:25:26In fact, before coming on the program, I would have been at the school.
00:25:29The school is called La Escuela de Conceder.
00:25:32I am learning Spanish.
00:25:34Si.
00:25:34Si.
00:25:35Right?
00:25:35It was, to me, one of my proudest moments as a police officer and one of the most nerve-wracking as well because it is already difficult engaging children who speak the English language.
00:25:52Yeah.
00:25:52In terms of ensuring that you're interactive, ensuring that you have the attention because some of them would, in fact, have limited attention span.
00:26:02Right.
00:26:02And these children were asking questions, I think more questions than any other school I've been to.
00:26:09That's you there sitting there.
00:26:10Yeah, with them, right?
00:26:11They would have asked more questions than probably any other school I've been to.
00:26:15Wow.
00:26:15They were very much interested in the topics that we were engaging them with.
00:26:20And, of course, it was a somewhat slow but sure engagement because we had to depend heavily on the translator.
00:26:30Right.
00:26:30Right.
00:26:30But the good thing out of it is I was able to learn a couple words as well.
00:26:34Right?
00:26:35So, we have that interaction with them.
00:26:39So, we continue the principal, Mrs. Brown.
00:26:43We are glad to have her engaged in trying to make a police service in pillar one of our operational plan, which speaks of positive community and public engagements with the intent to acquire public trust and confidence in the TTPS.
00:26:59But what were some of the questions that they asked, the students would have asked?
00:27:03So, they asked about consequences for bullying.
00:27:07Of course, we had to break it down and tell them that based on the bullying, there may be some criminal offenses assigned.
00:27:15In our days, Mark, you attending NAPSA, attending Menex, we knew what cover tax was.
00:27:20But when you get into the police service, you realize what we are calling cover tax can be robbery and aggravation.
00:27:28It could be simple robbery.
00:27:30It could be lasting from the person.
00:27:32Right?
00:27:32So, even though it was fun and games back then, we didn't understand that there were severe consequences behind it.
00:27:38So, one of our rules and functions, of course, is to ensure that the children in the schools within our, I wouldn't say within our division, but nationwide, are edified that if you are caught, you might be culpable of a criminal offense.
00:27:53Right?
00:27:54So, they were very, very into, they were very interactive, and I really cannot wait for our next engagement with that school specifically.
00:28:01Additionally, with the tensions between us and our neighbors, it was really nice to see that we were able to host and engage persons from the Venezuelan community who resided.
00:28:15Right, yeah.
00:28:15And I really, really love this initiative.
00:28:17Yeah, it's really an encouraging initiative.
00:28:19It's one that, you know, you build that bridge of understanding, respect, trust, et cetera.
00:28:26And, you know, as these young, impressionable minds, they grew up and you have the intervention or the collaboration or the interaction with police, you know, it gives them a better perspective of certain things.
00:28:40What to understand, how to understand, what to do, what not to do, as the case may be.
00:28:44Exactly.
00:28:46Right?
00:28:46And so, we look forward again, Principal Brung.
00:28:48Thank you for having us, and, of course, it's an engagement, a relationship that will auger well for the future.
00:28:57Yeah, you know, and we just want to remind you of the numbers to call 623-1711, extensions, 1996 and 1997.
00:29:05And while we wait for your calls, you know, you were talking about schools where there are particular forms that they write off.
00:29:15Yeah.
00:29:15Because a lot of the children in that particular class are indisciplined.
00:29:19And I can tell you for a fact that while I was in Napa Rima College, we were that kind of class.
00:29:28Yeah.
00:29:28And I kid you not where they had to actually call in a special parents' day for our class, a special parents' day.
00:29:36And I recall my father being a very model student at that school.
00:29:40They're telling him that I, if I get three passes, I get, that's plenty.
00:29:45And a lot of us were pranksters.
00:29:48We were, we did the whole gambit.
00:29:51Yes, exactly.
00:29:51The whole line yards, playing cards while the teacher is teaching and so on.
00:29:55But at the end of the day, we all ended up with five, six, and seven passes.
00:30:01Yeah.
00:30:03Again, we supported each other.
00:30:05But it was the same with Benedictine, you know that.
00:30:07Yeah.
00:30:07I remember fighting so much.
00:30:09One particular guy, I'll call his name, Richard James.
00:30:12Good afternoon.
00:30:12We fought so much that our fathers became friends because every time the teacher, the form teacher had called in, they end up friends, right?
00:30:22And today we are friends.
00:30:23We mature.
00:30:24We communicate when we need to.
00:30:26So nothing is new under the sun.
00:30:29A lot of the situations that we've seen in the schools were in existence when we were there.
00:30:35I think the difference is we did not have social media to showcase and highlight everything.
00:30:40So, of course, the opportunity or the avenue to deny it still exists with us, right?
00:30:50And I utilize that experience when engaging young people now so they'll understand that even though this is a phase and you don't want to do so much foolishness that when maturity sits and it's time to acquire employment and so on, you have a criminal record.
00:31:05Yeah.
00:31:05And I just want to tell Richie, I don't think it's advisable now to try and fight Sergeant Greenwich.
00:31:11No, I'm much more trained now.
00:31:12That makes sense.
00:31:13Being a police officer.
00:31:14All right.
00:31:15We have our first caller on the line.
00:31:16Caller, good evening and welcome to be on the tape.
00:31:19Good evening, Mark.
00:31:20Good evening to my dear friend.
00:31:22It's Greenwich.
00:31:23Good afternoon.
00:31:24Good evening.
00:31:24Good evening.
00:31:25I hope this is not Richie.
00:31:26No, it's not Richie.
00:31:27I want to commend you on your will and on your drive with those children.
00:31:33I know that you have that.
00:31:35It's more than a job.
00:31:37It's more of passion and that willingness to especially show that figure side that I know that you have been a mentor in terms of some of these, primarily some of these male children.
00:31:52And I want to commend you on that.
00:31:54Mark, I see that you made good on your promise from yesterday and the officers are standing with you this evening.
00:32:02Yes, yes.
00:32:02Right?
00:32:03And Mr. Greenwich, he also pointed out something with that ceiling and that barrier.
00:32:08I am making a call.
00:32:09Please, somehow, with the powers that be and with Mr. Ali, as I know, will always give that legal side.
00:32:17Somehow, let's get back this, what do they call it, a few moments later.
00:32:22Yes, we need that.
00:32:23We really, really need that.
00:32:25Justice that is laid back, that is prolonged, is justice denied.
00:32:31Something like that?
00:32:31Justice delayed is justice denied.
00:32:34Yes, you're right.
00:32:34And we need some justice for this one.
00:32:36We need to see that these forces are being held up to our own for the action.
00:32:40I was trying to get on yesterday relative to the person of persons.
00:32:45I don't believe it was one child that loved that officer in that classroom.
00:32:50I am thinking that some sort of action, a plea back to the city nation, and a strong message be sent.
00:32:59Yeah?
00:33:00Before they could be reintroduced, hand them over to Mr. Greenwich.
00:33:04Make sure they could do that.
00:33:05Make sure they took some time as well, you know, away from the family and mommy and mommy and whoever.
00:33:12And let a strong message be shown that authority and disrespecting for authority must not and should not be entertained in order with us.
00:33:22If not, we'll have more of these brazen snatches and sometimes beating this lady walk away.
00:33:27Maybe if she had tried to defend herself, you see that fella, he had some strapping in him in a miscarriage.
00:33:34He had some shoulder there.
00:33:36And that is now what I don't think that that is what we want to release, that that message should not be taken that majority.
00:33:42So, for the most part, a few moments later, Maxie, if we could bring that back and show these first faces of these protests and also announce to the international community what sanction, what sanction, sanction is applied in these circumstances.
00:34:01Are you listening up here, Mr. Greenwich? Keep it up with the good work, Max. Have a good evening. I'm listening.
00:34:07All right, so I want to thank you for the words of support.
00:34:09When it comes to the young man in precept, secondary, Sergeant Small is, if not more, just as committed and I'm certain, he will ensure that certain things are put in place where those individuals in that school are concerned.
00:34:24All right, we have another caller on the line. Caller, good evening and welcome to be on the tape.
00:34:30Good evening, Mr. Bassant and Officer Greenwich.
00:34:33Good evening, man.
00:34:34I always follow you on synergy when you come one on a morning, either you or Mr. Fitz.
00:34:41I have to compliment you on the tremendous job that you're doing with the youth.
00:34:47Do you have all these clubs in different places in the country?
00:34:54And secondly, I like very much what I heard here just now about underestimating some students.
00:35:04I know personally of a school, the fifth standard, which was the SEA students, was given trouble.
00:35:14And you know they did not give those children a graduation function just because of a handful of them misbehaving.
00:35:21They were deprived of that and that hurt to the core because when results came out, the majority of those children were tough, tough students, pass for very good school.
00:35:37You know, and you know, this is not right.
00:35:42It is definitely not right.
00:35:44We shouldn't be holding a whole class at ransom for just a handful of the little troublemakers.
00:35:51Sometimes there's a little attention they're looking for, you know.
00:35:54That is all because they're not getting it home.
00:35:56And teachers ought to know how to deal with them, talk to them, communicate with them.
00:36:03Don't punish them like that.
00:36:05Because I know those that left, they heard up to this day that they won't give a proper send-off from their primary school.
00:36:14And that was unjust.
00:36:17After you all think, Mr. Greenwich, those teams, we need them in different states.
00:36:25We need them in different areas.
00:36:28And if you could stretch your arms a little and get a lot of the young men and women in areas, in teams, we will have a better, better nation.
00:36:41I don't know if I could reach out to you and at what station, so I could tell you where I would really like you to have an active, active football team.
00:36:53Thank you very much.
00:36:55Okay, ma'am.
00:36:56Thank you again for the words of support.
00:36:59There are 96 active police clubs throughout Trenant and Tobago.
00:37:04Unfortunately, not all of them would have clubhouses.
00:37:06But most of them are active and the leaders do their best to ensure that they engage the nation's children on a daily basis, positively.
00:37:18As for the graduation, that's very unfortunate.
00:37:21I know of one school where that was the case.
00:37:23I wouldn't call the name of the school.
00:37:24And I was somewhat disappointed because graduations are landmarks or inner child's life, milestones, right?
00:37:36And to be deprived of that, yeah, it would have some level of a negative effect, right?
00:37:42But, of course, as you are aware, we are not responsible for the administrative activities in any school.
00:37:48Yep.
00:37:50All right, as I just said, you know, they say Peter has paid for Paul and Paul has paid for all.
00:37:55All, right, so Paul being the richest man in the world.
00:37:58Very unfortunate situation.
00:38:00All right, we're going to take a short break and when we come back, we'll take more of your calls.
00:38:03Stay with us.
00:38:04Okay, I see you.
00:38:22Okay, let me see you.
00:38:23Cherry Hill, uh, yeah, now take it back, uh.
00:38:26Let me see you.
00:38:27Rock off, rock off, uh, shake off, shake off.
00:38:30Let me see you.
00:38:30Rock off, rock off.
00:38:31Let me see you kick right, now kick left, now step forward, now step back.

00:39:09A safer nation begins with you standing up, speaking out, and doing your part.
00:39:15As your commissioner of police, I am prepared to do my part.
00:39:20Are you prepared to do your part?
00:39:21Get on board.
00:39:22Are you on board?
00:39:23I am Bishop Ezekiel Clark, president of the Coover Police Station Community Council.
00:39:29And I am proud to say that I am on board with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in their fight against crime in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:39:38I am Panis Dean Galston.
00:39:40And I am Panis Johan Jokri.
00:39:42And crime prevention is everybody's business.
00:39:48Hi, I am Sajina Kudir, attorney at law and team lead for the attorneys for the TTPS Community Justice Clinic.
00:39:55We support the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in the fight against crime.
00:39:59Crime prevention is everybody's business.
00:40:01I am Shiraz Khan, I am a farmer.
00:40:04I support the TTPS in the fight against crime.
00:40:07My name is Maldeth Maraj, president of the Shavonna's Chamber of Industrial and Commerce.
00:40:12Crime fighting is everybody's business.
00:40:14We are all in board.
00:40:31Welcome back to Be On The Tape.
00:40:33I am your host, Mark Besson, joined today by Acting Sergeant Kevin Drenage of the Community Oriented Policing Unit.
00:40:40And I think we have a caller on the line.
00:40:41Caller, good evening and welcome to Be On The Tape.
00:40:45Hello, caller, good evening.
00:40:47Hi, good afternoon, gentlemen.
00:40:48Good day, sir.
00:40:49Good afternoon.
00:40:50I have a question and I have a request, so I will ask the question, too.
00:40:56Is that okay?
00:40:57Sure.
00:40:57Sure.
00:40:58Yeah.
00:40:59With respect to the guy who ripped the birra off the young lady's hand, had she been legally
00:41:07armed and turned and used it, what would the consequences of those actions evolve in?
00:41:16What would have happened to her, apart from him getting up to her?
00:41:20All right, so at the end of the day, where the Firearms Act is concerned, 1601, you draw your firem for one definite purpose.
00:41:33One, two, you are to ensure that there is an imminent threat when it comes to your life or the life of another.
00:41:42Unless, of course, we can determine that the gentleman was, in fact, armed, it would be risky to pursue the person in terms of the use of force.
00:41:59The use of force must be equivalent to the threat being administered.
00:42:04All right, so, yes, there are people who may have found the urge to do a firem, possibly if it was law enforcement and they would engage any suspect, by all means.
00:42:16But for the average citizen to just do that, they may find themselves having a question and answer before the court.
00:42:23Yes, caller, go ahead.
00:42:25But do you think that he would engage in such activities unarmed?
00:42:32I am certain he has some form of arm on him.
00:42:35Well, one would hope, but in the event that you do it and it is observed that he's not armed, trust me, there is no worse feeling than that.
00:42:43Yeah, because as you said, even if you have a licensed firemolar and he walks away from you and you turn to shoot him and you shoot him in the back, you can't be held.
00:42:52There is no threat.
00:42:53Yeah, there is no threat because he walks away from you.
00:42:56He's not armed with a knife or any other kind of weapon.
00:43:00When he approaches you, he came, he grabbed the man off her hand and quickly turned away.
00:43:05Had he been armed and the person was armed, we know.
00:43:12Okay, caller, I think you have a recommendation.
00:43:14Yeah, go ahead.
00:43:15I have a request now.
00:43:17Sure.
00:43:17Yeah, I have been waiting for a very long time to hear the second part of Mother Rabbit.
00:43:26Could you ask the current commissioner when they tend to read that for us?
00:43:29I don't think I would be responding to that statement or comment at this time.
00:43:38I am aware as to where you're coming from, but I am very happy working where I work and doing what I do.
00:43:47Right?
00:43:47So, I don't think I would be engaging that comment at this time.
00:43:54All right.
00:43:55So, call, I hope you answered your question.
00:43:57I know that it might have been somewhere cryptic, but I think the sergeant placed his cards on the table and said he's not going to answer or no further comment.
00:44:07All right.
00:44:07Let's quickly go to a voice of the people in Shoguanas.
00:44:11Let's quickly go to a voice of the people in Shoguanas.
00:44:41So, you feel safer?
00:44:43Yes.
00:44:45So, since the implementation of this, you have seen a reduction in time since, yes, we started?
00:44:50I find everything intelligent and it moving smoother and nicer.
00:44:55And if the country changes and it develops and it changes, people get new work, they get a new and better view of everything.
00:45:02Everything will change.
00:45:03Little by little, it will change.
00:45:06Do you think we need a proof during the state of emergency?
00:45:08Probably just for a little while, but they have to open out businesses and places because you can't tight up everything.
00:45:15Have you ever been a victim of a scam?
00:45:17No.
00:45:17I am an actor.
00:45:18Everybody loves me.
00:45:20Nobody hates me.
00:45:22What are your thoughts on school violence?
00:45:24I think children, you need to develop and talk to them nice and they need a second chance because they have a whole future ahead of them.
00:45:32You know how to open up for them because they don't have that sense to know that.
00:45:36Do you think that schools should play a better role in crime prevention?
00:45:40They can't really prevent children, but children, if you provoke a person, if you talk to me and you provoke me and you keep on provoking, a person will get aggressive to be angry.
00:45:50And when they get angry, they will do that.
00:45:53Any individual will do it, they will come to camp here.
00:45:55But if you talk nice and you have a personality, anybody go on a smooth journey.
00:46:01It's like a normal thing.
00:46:02Right.
00:46:03You feel safe when you're at home or when you're walking on the streets?
00:46:06You feel safe anyway.
00:46:07Once you have God and you have love in your heart and everybody like you and you're a celebrity, everybody like you.
00:46:13How can communities work together to reduce crime?
00:46:16Well, they can have like them police youths sing at each other, talk to them and communicate on top of the line.
00:46:23Right.
00:46:24What do you think makes people want to commit crimes?
00:46:27Well, Jews are hurt and if they have a greediness or they have an angriness because sometimes you talk to them, you have deals with money, you can see the evil, the devil in the eyes, the way of personality, you can see a lot of things.
00:46:40But if you talk like a personality, like, yes, darling, yes, sweetie, you still can detect that, but you just know them.
00:46:47Somebody out here just know them by the way they look, the way they talk, but you just have to close eyes and then think twice.
00:46:54Good answer, man. I like that last answer. Thanks so much for your time.
00:47:04Voice of the People, Sergeant.
00:47:05Voice of the People.
00:47:06And what stood out for me, she didn't in fact mention police youth clubs as one of the avenues in which we can impact change in communities.
00:47:13So thank her very much for at least appreciating.
00:47:17It's always nice when the public appreciates the efforts of the Trans-Dibego Police Service in our fight.
00:47:22I mean, we don't always get it right.
00:47:24We are far from being a perfect institution, but everyday officers put their life on the line and go there and really attempt to make a difference.
00:47:31Yeah, most certainly.
00:47:33All right. And don't forget, of course, we were in San Fernando earlier in this week.
00:47:37So, Voice of the People, look out for those persons in the San Fernando area in the coming days.
00:47:45All right. We're going to take a short break.
00:47:47And when we get back, we'll have more. Stay with us.

00:49:44We are all on board.
00:49:46Welcome back to Be On The Tape.
00:50:03I am your host, Mark Mossand, joined today by Acting Sergeant Kevin Greenidge of the Community Oriented Policing Unit.
00:50:10A couple of announcements.

00:50:48He was last seen, excuse me, in the Santa Cruz area.
00:50:52Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of J.J. Alam,
00:50:56we are asking you to contact the authority at 996, or the police at 999,
00:51:01or any closest police station that you might have seen him.
00:51:06Sergeant.
00:51:07Yes, let's get the insurance home.
00:51:10Trinidad is not that big where we're not going to, somebody's going to see someone, and again,
00:51:16and the mantra of the police service continues to be, see something, say something.
00:51:20Let us not wait until it's one of our relatives, I would have said it earlier, and I'm saying it again,
00:51:24when we decide we want John Puppet to help, right?
00:51:28If we help now, should that situation arise, we would get help in return.
00:51:33Yes, certainly.
00:51:34All right, we just want to remind you of the numbers.
00:51:36Call 623-1711, extensions 1996 and 1997.
00:51:42And I know you have a couple of initiatives that you all have been working on here.
00:51:46You're going to have to walk us through.
00:51:48Sure.
00:51:48So, at the European Police Club, we were able to partner with Massy Distribution
00:51:54to get an introductory program into agriculture.
00:52:01We are really trying to get our children, not only from the youth club, but from various schools,
00:52:06excited about growing their own food using the soil.
00:52:11We have Mr. Alpha Senon all the way from Separia, who is known as Agri-Man,
00:52:17and who has an institution called YFAM, who was responsible for assisting us in acquiring the grow boxes, right?
00:52:26We were taking some licks with the African snail, right?
00:52:30But the children were very determined to ensure that they yield their crops, their crops,
00:52:37and we were able to do that.
00:52:39Crops that were planted would include pak choi, lettuce, corn, peppers, and pimentos.
00:52:47So, I want to say hi to Celia and Zara and Emmanuel Victory, who were very, very determined.
00:53:01They check the garden more than me.
00:53:02Yeah, it gives you that self-sufficiency from a very young age.
00:53:08You know, food is a very important commodity.
00:53:12Food security, we talk about that quite often across the, you know, in general conversations, you know, trying to secure.
00:53:19So, that's a good initiative, a really good idea to have these young persons get involved early in agriculture.
00:53:26We also want to talk to Ms. Julie Aavey, who continues to make these things possible with the club,
00:53:33because she was our middle agent between us and Ms. Alpha Senon, right?
00:53:40And we see that the children, now that they are getting tomatoes, we've seen tomatoes bearing,
00:53:46and they are really, really excited, right?
00:53:49So, the next step is really to do it on a wider scale, a larger scale at some point.
00:53:56That's a really good initiative, and I know there's another initiative you wanted to share with us.
00:54:01I've seen some football here.
00:54:03All right.
00:54:03So, the Brazil San Rafael Police Club, under the stewardship of WPC Camille Jocelyn,
00:54:11would have held something we held, I think I mentioned it last time, in the division every year,
00:54:15around the July-August vacation called Operation Safe Space.
00:54:18It is designed, in fact, to keep the children in a controlled environment,
00:54:22which is the Police Week Club houses during the August.
00:54:25So, what you find upon is that when the school reopens,
00:54:28it is easy for them to transition back into the school environment.
00:54:32Unfortunately, a lot of children who do not have this opportunity or this initiative available to them
00:54:38take some time to resettle when school reopens.
00:54:42What you saw there at football was the final day of the Operation Safe Space at the Amsterdam Rafael,
00:54:49into the back of the San Rafael Police Station,
00:54:51and the young men did, in fact, have the opportunity to play against police officers,
00:54:57most of whom are attached to the Northern Division Task Force,
00:55:02in that old lion versus young lion match.
00:55:05I do not have the information as to who would have won,
00:55:09but I want to thank the officers of the task force for making themselves available
00:55:14to play the young people, right?
00:55:18I am certain that at the end of the march, a lot of Ben Jews and IODX may have been used.
00:55:24By the older police officers.
00:55:26But it always speaks of positive police engagement with the young people,
00:55:31so that they understand that police officers do, in fact, have a human side,
00:55:36and if you appeal to the humans and we work together, we can get a lot more done.
00:55:39And, of course, agenda public trust and confidence.
00:55:41That's what is always one of those.
00:55:43One of the languages.
00:55:44Yes.
00:55:44Building that bridge between communication, of camaraderie, of friendships, of all these things.
00:55:52Yes.
00:55:52It's a really good initiative there, Saj.
00:55:55All right.
00:55:56We have another caller on the line.
00:55:57Caller, good evening and welcome to be on the tape.
00:55:59Good evening, ma'am.
00:56:05This is the lady from South Dakota last week, Friday.
00:56:10Now, one of the problems or the crime that I am being affected by, personally,
00:56:15I'm an elderly citizen, 64 years old, is my phone.
00:56:19My calls are being blocked.
00:56:21That is why I already mentioned that I'm unable to get through with me when you're calling,
00:56:27whoever, you, Mr. Pitt, whoever, but the problem is my phone.
00:56:30I don't even receive calls from other people.
00:56:33My own brother will tell me he's calling me.
00:56:35He called me when I didn't call him for his birthday.
00:56:36I'll just give you an example.
00:56:38He was calling me right through WhatsApp and everything else to see if he could get through with me
00:56:42to know what happened.
00:56:43He didn't get in through.
00:56:44Right?
00:56:44And it's a problem I have in here years now.
00:56:47People are spying on me here.
00:56:48I can't talk about it.
00:56:50I don't want to talk about the problem that I feel in here.
00:56:54And that's all I think.
00:56:55And I do not want to, as I said before, put the police in this country because I know
00:57:00they're a very good officer.
00:57:01But these more people, politicians, over 10 years, I am a victim.
00:57:05And when you go there, you have been treated as a criminal in mannerism and with the speech
00:57:10there.
00:57:11Right?
00:57:11We celebrated 70 years of the female police in existence and trying to speak.
00:57:16But when you go there, there are more men.
00:57:17Let's talk to you like if they meet, I don't know what to say, like some kind of beast.
00:57:23Right?
00:57:23Every time that happened, I leave and I was going to church that morning and I went to
00:57:26make a report and I couldn't wait.
00:57:28Your mother turned and told me that she don't even have a thing to give me, a receipt, a
00:57:32request, a receipt, and she never gives me.
00:57:35Up to now, nobody had come here.
00:57:36Since it's still the last one, nobody had me come to talk to nobody here.
00:57:40The matter was the last one gone.
00:57:43You understand?
00:57:44What exactly, Kola, can you tell me what exactly is the problem that you're being faced with
00:57:49that the police are neglecting?
00:57:51Um, I don't want to speak because there's a lot of things going on here with, as I would
00:57:56have to ask the officer, he told me that he would get on to me, right?
00:58:00Which area is this, on your poor area?
00:58:04They're very busy, but a lady called my couple of weeks, a female, a WPT, and she said,
00:58:10he asked, cut the call, and he said, you're looking into it, but it's a number of things.
00:58:14My house is flooding with more than here, the stamp, and break up anybody.
00:58:18I wanted, Mr. Barson, that's why I wanted to speak it.
00:58:20Bring TV fix here and do an interview on here, go see my house, and here's the thing what
00:58:24I do with you here, agency not doing anything as well, I'll pay my rent, I don't owe them
00:58:29a penny, and other people own them a lot of money, and they come in and repair, and
00:58:33I'm fixing things, and I don't owe them no money, right?
00:58:37When I was working, I was spending the same rent, and I ended up working over nearly 20
00:58:41years, over 17 years, and same thing, right?
00:58:44If you want that, I could send a text, I don't know where you will get it, because
00:58:47I make a request, if you could call me, and you can call me eight days today, right?
00:58:52All right, so call Olivia number, off air force, and we will try to contact you, all right?
00:58:58All right, so, I mean, one of the things that stood out there, apparently, she's indicating
00:59:05that the treatment, when she went to the Monropo police station, and some of the officers that
00:59:11she would have interacted with, we clearly don't have the gist of what exactly is her problem,
00:59:19because she's a little bit apprehensive to actually share that with us on here.
00:59:25Well, I'm certain that our seniors are paying attention to what is taking place, and hopefully,
00:59:32if the number is received, I too can probably make a little inquiry to ask what is taking
00:59:38place to assist her, right?
00:59:41Of course, again, our focus is on engendering public trust and confidence in the TPS, and
00:59:48to do that, we have to ensure that we do, in fact, both execute our duties with professionalism
00:59:53and some level of efficiency.
00:59:57Yes?
00:59:58Well, certainly, you know, because, as I said, you know, when you walk into a police station
01:00:03as a victim of a crime, or to make a complaint or report of some nature, you expect that level
01:00:11of professionalism by these officers, and sometimes they are human beings, so I'm not trying to
01:00:16defend anyone, but we also have to, you know, six hour and a half dozen other, how you speak
01:00:22to persons, they will reciprocate that to you as well.
01:00:25So, when you speak to an officer, you're going there, you can't go in all hasty, even if
01:00:30you're a victim of a crime, you have to be, you know.
01:00:33Though I agree with you, Mark, true professionalism dictates that no matter the mood, temperature,
01:00:41challenges you're faced with communicating with the client, you execute your duty with professionalism
01:00:47still.
01:00:48Yeah.
01:00:48Right?
01:00:49The fact of the matter is a lot of people are, in fact, coming to police stations for redress.
01:00:53So, obviously, expect them to be riled up, to be agitated to some extent.
01:01:00And as such, we ought to express such emotional intelligence that we understand that this person
01:01:06is, in fact, emotionally flooded, and we treat with them along the line of de-escalation first.
01:01:12All right.
01:01:13Well said, Sergeant.
01:01:14If you have another caller in the line, caller, good evening, and welcome to be on the tape.
01:01:18Yes, Mr. Bassant, I'll hear you last year, but I have a witness, and the report when I
01:01:23went there, the incident was recorded there, and make sure now we'll make a tape recording
01:01:27of a video.
01:01:29I'm a son.
01:01:30I'm a God-trained person, and I'm a God-trained person, and not everybody who go to a church
01:01:33would say there's been worshiping God.
01:01:35But I live in one religion to go to Christianity over 25 years now.
01:01:40I live alone and foster my inheritance from my Christianity, and I never commit a crime in
01:01:43this country.
01:01:44Right?
01:01:45And this remark, or I'll be making the way of speaking, they have to train them women
01:01:50how to talk to people properly.
01:01:52They're dealing with the public.
01:01:53Now, let me finish.
01:01:54They're dealing with the public.
01:01:55They have to get training in humanitarian terms, how to talk to people.
01:01:59Right?
01:02:00I have one witness who went with me, and I also had it.
01:02:04Right now, I'm very angry, especially because of the city.
01:02:07Right?
01:02:07And every time it's over 10 years ago, a woman, I know, for the same church, I leave
01:02:11the church because she's a police corporate, and I knew she never reached up in my apartment.
01:02:16Everybody come in the schedule, like, where you call it down, it's Thursday, and get no
01:02:20satisfaction in telling.
01:02:20She does it.
01:02:21She does it.
01:02:22The same one of them, you run up in people, also kill them with a knife, and you get the
01:02:26reward.
01:02:27Like, now, six feet today, six feet in your growth today.
01:02:31Right?
01:02:31So, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, make sure this
01:02:34is reaching the national news.
01:02:35Caller, we have your number, and Sergeant, Sergeant Guinness has promised to give you
01:02:39a shout.
01:02:40We are running out of time, I'm sorry, but definitely, Sergeant Guinness says he will
01:02:44try to contact you.
01:02:45Yes, ma'am, we will attempt to communicate with you.
01:02:47Right, so, we just have about a minute left, uh, Sarge, so is there anything wrapping up?
01:02:51We are coming to the, we are near the weekend, uh, you want to just tell people about the
01:02:55safety on the roadways and all these things?
01:02:57Of course, um, at the end of the day, remember, we are out there, we are doing our jobs, and we
01:03:02are asking, of course, that we minimize the carnage on the road.
01:03:05If you are to drink, please ensure that you have a designated driver, um, and let us
01:03:11always be, um, use that situational awareness to avoid becoming victims ourselves.
01:03:18Right, I want to say good evening to Ms. Gulcheran of the Johnson's Finishing School, Ms. Garib
01:03:23of the Correal Police, um, Correal Secondary School, and Mr. Johnson, um, you all enjoy your
01:03:28weekend, and we have a lot of work to do come Monday.
01:03:31Be safe.
01:03:32All right, great.
01:03:33All right, remember, the TV6 News is up next, and after that, cricket, TKR with the St.
01:03:39Lucia, let's go TKR.
01:03:41We'll see you on Monday.
01:03:42We'll see you on Monday.
