00:34good afternoon. Good afternoon, Trinidad and Tobago. Rainy day. Rainy day it is. And, you
00:39know, one of the things that has occupied a lot of discussion over the last couple of
00:44weeks, of course, is the strapping of the demerit points. And we wanted to listen in
00:49on the president of the Trinidad and Tobago Taxi Drivers Network, speaking to Dexter Phillip
00:55from the Express earlier today. Let's take a listen in. I'm the president of the Trinidad
01:02and Tobago Taxi Drivers Network. I'm here with my colleagues today to share our views
01:07pertaining to the demerit point system, right? We heard that the Prime Minister said that
01:14they were going to scrap it. We are here today to say our piece on it. We are in support
01:21of the demerit point system being scrapped, well, looked over. And we are in support of
01:29that, right? We also want to take the opportunity to mention that we do believe that everything
01:35should be removed from the demerit points. But most of those charges that they had with
01:43the demerit points was not good for the population, the driving public, right? We were protesting
01:50against that demerit point system from day one, right? They had points on certain charges
01:56that, you know, weren't viable for you, right? Such as bulbs, road bulbs, smooth tire, crack
02:04windscreen, not inspecting your vehicle, right? We believe that those things were very, very
02:18bad. We believe that those things were very, very bad. We believe that those things were

07:55So those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours and I know that I think
08:02yesterday the Hunter, Search and Rescue in their bid to locate a missing man by the name
08:09of Shiraz Ali. His fecal was discovered in the Santa Flora area in a forested area off
08:16the road there on Wednesday as the Hunter, Search and Rescue together with the police
08:24service and other units, the air units and so on, have also been instrumental in trying
08:31to locate Mr. Ali. His fecal, I think we have a picture, yes, that's a fecal there,
08:37found abandoned, of course, in that area there. As you can see, it's quite forested and we're
08:44hoping for the best that Mr. Ali will be found, of course, alive.
08:48Definitely. And again, we load the efforts and the support of the Hunter, Search and
08:54Rescue team and in accordance with that, we would ask anyone with information regarding
09:00this particular incident to please contact 555-800-DEF-SINERIS police station. We would
09:05only hope that we can bring this situation to some successful conclusion.
09:09Yes. Just wanted to talk briefly about another video that emerged in the last 24 hours, a
09:17school fight that we saw on social media here, involving adults as well, but you have the
09:29students attacking the adults. But of course, before that, it was the adults crossing the
09:34street and there were two, a male and female adult. And we have here captured the students,
09:41of course, male students, kicking and cuffing a male adult who was lying on the roadway
09:48for some time. This is at the beginning. There was a lady, an adult woman as well, and then
09:56a fracture breaks out, of course, and there were two separate incidents happening at the
10:00same time involving the two adults and school children.
10:03Yes. Well, it is always painful to see students who are children attacking adults, assaulting
10:12adults, beating adults. It is also equally painful to see, and I'm speaking generally,
10:21I'm not speaking necessarily to this situation because I have no direct information regarding
10:25this, but it's also painful to see adults getting directly involved as opposed to treating
10:32with the school process as it gives regards to discipline. And those processes are set
10:42up so that you will have some level of transparency, fairness, and you have the persons within
10:49the school, whether it's the dean of discipline or whatever board, in order to treat with
10:53issues that whatever child might be suffering at the point in time. What we have observed,
11:00which in itself is not something that we would encourage, is that sometimes parents take
11:06matters into their own hands. And again, I will repeat, this is not a touch on the period
11:12that was just shown. This is generally speaking. We have also seen instances where parents
11:19would go into the school environment or around the school environment in order to probably
11:26offer that level of support and what have you, and they have been attacked. So on both
11:30ends, it's a case of, you know, the children, we tend to question their upbringing. We tend
11:38to question the levels of discipline that they have been exposed to, the levels of parenting
11:44that they have been exposed to, to the extent that you would want to take what are their
11:50thoughts as they say to hit an adult. But on the other hand, we would also question
11:57an adult who would want to go down into the arena of children and exact revenge and do
12:04things that would put them in a position where, you know, as right-thinking human beings,
12:13we would ask, you know, what were you trying to achieve in the first place? If it is there
12:19as an issue, then let us have some confidence in the process. If we believe that that process
12:25has fallen apart, you are always free to communicate with the police station or the police officers
12:32within your district. Because if there are offenses that have taken place and you have
12:37the view that you want a particular type of justice, then that is open to you. What is
12:41not open to you is going into the school environment and exacting revenge, as I said
12:47before. And also from the other side, we would never condone children who believe that it
12:54is okay just to attack a person's parents because of how you feel about the individual
13:00child or, you know, you behave in such a way that you even bring the school into disrepute.
13:06So, it is a two-fold sort of affair. And again, I will repeat it. I am speaking generally.
13:11Yes. Yes. It has nothing to do with the video that was just shown.
13:15All right. But our understanding is that this incident happened in Tobago. So, hopefully,
13:20Senior Superintendent Eli or ASP Subera can give us some clarity going forward. We are

17:44we head to the voice of the people in their Rima district.
18:14So should we blame society or the person for getting involved in crime?
18:44Yeah.
18:46Yeah.
18:49At what age person should be fully responsible for their actions and what is the youngest
18:55age that a criminal should be punished, that a person should be punished as an adult? Youngest
19:01age?
19:02Well.
19:03In your opinion?
19:04Number one, children shouldn't really be punished, right? If you correct them the right way.
19:10If everybody do their part in training and disciplining the child, every household do that, right?
19:16Things should work out, right? Everybody had to check the self. You understand? And be
19:22responsible because we lack responsibility and respect. You understand?
19:28Two more questions. How do you feel about drunk driving? And should it be punishable?
19:35Well, it's something that, it happened to my son once, a drunk driver bounced him and
19:39mashed up the whole left side of the van, right? And he got away because he went to the police
19:44station and they saw who it is. They go on and on. A lot of cases I heard again that
19:48even with the police on them too, right? They just threw that case aside. You understand?
19:54And like, for example, again, like workplaces, government workplaces, companies and things
19:59who have people driving vehicles and things. Guys, this is me, right? In the morning when
20:04they go, give them a drug test. Check them, right? In the evening when they come back,
20:09check them again. So they will, in return, become responsible for themselves and others
20:14on the road.
20:15What would you say should be the proper punishment for persons driving under the influence?
20:22Well, take away their license for a while, right? At the end of the day, they still have
20:28a family to support, right? But give them, take away their license for a while and see
20:34what will happen.
20:35Final question, how can we reduce crime? Harsher penalties or better education?
20:40What I was telling early, from me early, better education, right? And then when, if penalty
20:45had to come in after it come in, but you need to educate the people. For example, like in
20:49China, right? Up till the age of four, they educate the children on discipline, respect,
20:56life and living, moral and values, you understand? Self-respect, right? And then after that,
21:01then they put buxoms in the head. But here, we're not doing it. We're not educating the
21:05children. For example, again, like the children, the school children traveling today, like
21:09you have to tell them what's the difference between a Pika and a H-car, you understand?
21:14Because they jump in and the Pika will pass right there and all of them run inside it
21:18and go down the road, you understand? And we sit down here waiting on people, you understand?
21:23That's how it is operate.
21:25And the last question is, what are you looking forward to in terms of this government dealing
21:29with crime, the new government?
21:33Well, just fix where it has to be fixed. Just make sure and do the part because people look
21:39at you with promises again compared to the other government and they're looking up at
21:43all of you, right? Always just do all your part and put down all your foot. It's time
21:48for people to put down their foot like that, you understand? And get the right thing going,
21:52Yana-san, come. Yana-san, so that's about it.

22:20Very, very interesting perspective. And, you know, we always appreciate that type of feedback,
22:26you know, what the average man is going to contribute, how he or she is going to view
22:33crime management, the way we treat with certain issues. He mentioned regarding the DUI that
22:40you can take away the driver's permit and then immediately he looked at the other perspective
22:45and he said, you know, but possibly this person may have to maintain a family, earn
22:51a living. And it's in that same vein that, you know, the state apparatus works when you
22:58look at the justice system in terms of creating that balance. Yes, persons have to be punished,
23:04but it must be balanced regarding their rights to do certain things, you know? And we wouldn't
23:10always appreciate it dependent on the degree of offense that is committed. But nonetheless,
23:19it is something that is very fundamental.

23:32Cool so far. How are the vibes going with you?
23:35I'm okay for the while, sir. I'm doing okay. Taking a look at the show, listening. And, you know,
23:43I've been a viewer of the show for a couple of years. Well, and you know, recently, you know,
23:50when I watch the show, I feel like every time I watch it, I'm compelled to call, you know.
23:56But long story short, I won't be too long-winded. You know, there have been points that persons
24:01would raise about community policing. Seeing, you know, a revival, you know, the trust and
24:09confidence factor, you know, persons knowing that we all in this together, you know, we are regular
24:16citizens, but we want the same thing that police officers want. We want a peaceful, happy, safe
24:23Trinidad and Tobago for all local citizens and also foreign persons to come and enjoy.
24:29That's right.
24:30So, you know, I feel like persons need to have that confidence that, hey, you know, if on the off chance,
24:37that's the level we should be at as a country, if on the off chance we notice anything at all,
24:42we could reach out to the respective authority, which would be you gentlemen, the TTPS,
24:47and they would look into it and give that feedback and whatnot. I think we should be moving forward.
24:54Some of the issues we have been having in communities, we should not have that any further.
24:59The mindset should be for us to move forward. And real quick, I want to say, you know, there have been
25:05other ministries that, you know, could be doing their job to minister education so that the TTPS
25:12don't have to get involved into that. Persons, the AMA and whatnot, persons literate and whatnot,
25:18right now rain falling, that could in some way cause use for the TTPS to get involved too,
25:24but with strain in the resources. So, I'm hoping that, you know, real change comes
25:31and we can have the type of country that we all want. Thanks for the time. All the best to you guys.
