02:32Welcome to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Passant.
02:52Welcome to our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago.
02:55Of course, our international viewers and our brothers and sisters in the Isles of Grenada.
03:00It's the day before the holiday as Trinidad and Tobago will be celebrating 49 years tomorrow as a republic.
03:08So definitely, it feels like a Friday even.
03:11And I know usually on the Wednesdays, we would have Acting Sergeant Zakir Ali of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Attainment Law.
03:19Seeing that there is no, legally speaking, Wednesdays tomorrow, we have a legally speaking Tuesdays today.
03:25And I want to welcome Acting Sergeant Ali.
03:27Well, thank you very much, Mark.
03:29You know, Mark, you and Jackie and, you know, your other executive team, I see that you have subpoenaed me here this afternoon, you know, to share this platform with you.
03:38And I want to thank you all very much for the opportunity to continue to, you know, partner with you all for the purposes of public good.
03:46But good evening to you.
03:48Thank you very much for your continued good work, Jackie and other family members and beyond the tape.
03:54This is the theory of Trinidad and Tobago, my law enforcement colleagues, persons who are viewing and listening out of the jurisdiction.
04:00You know, Mark, you know, I want to begin this afternoon.
04:01I know you hinted to, you know, we're on the eve of Republic Day in Trinidad and Tobago.
04:07And, you know, just before I share some brief perspective on Republic Day, I think it's still much alive with reference to the victory of the Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders.
04:18And I think it's important, you know, on this set TV station, TV6, I had the opportunity to speak with the media in a sporting context, you know, and I clearly indicated that the TKR would have had the edge.
04:33And, you know, I'm happy that, you know, they fulfill the obligation of bringing home that title to Trinidad and Tobago.
04:38So I want to join with you and the national community and all the supporters of the TKR, you know, to join with you all to, you know, acknowledge, you know, a very, very important tournament.
04:50And, you know, what are we attending tournament, you know, just a beautiful sight, you know, seeing the captain, you know, moving with the trophy and, you know, his team.
04:58I'm sure that has brought a lot of joy to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
05:01And I know, Mark, you know, off set, you know, I've seen a lot of interests, you know, with your good self and other persons that I've met in terms of following this tournament.
05:07Very, very carefully.
05:09So to the Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders, both the playing, the players, sorry, and most importantly, Mark, the management.
05:15I think it's important to look at the management of this team, you know, Duane Barrefour and the other individuals.
05:20I think it's important to look at them as well.
05:22But, you know, I want to congratulate TKR and the national community and persons who may have supported TKR throughout the region and internationally.
05:29Well, at the Diplomatic Centre, a little bit earlier, Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa met with Mr. Walcott.
05:37As well as Jareem Richards and the TKR team.
05:42And what I can tell you is that the TKR team is going to be awarded the Shikonia Gold.
05:47She made that announcement.
05:49Pollard, Kyron Pollard has been made a sports ambassador.
05:52And the sums of quarter million to be given to Jareem and half a million to Keishon.
05:58So, that puts it into some perspective, their hard work, yielding, you know, that reward, that recognition from the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
06:09And we want to really say hats off.
06:12You know, it's a really good, great feeling news.
06:14You know, starting the week like this, a gold medal, a silver medal at the World Championships.
06:19And then bringing home the big one, the fifth title for the TKR.
06:25And the most titles, of course.
06:26And I know it was very nerve-wracking.
06:29I imagine Sergeant Ali would have been having a meltdown when he saw those wickets started to fall after Pollard hit some glorious sixes and a four in that over.
06:40And then lost his wicket.
06:41And then we had Russell losing his wicket thereafter, one ball after.
06:45And we started to wonder, were we going to capitulate?
06:47Thankfully, Akeel Hussain stepped in and made a quick-fire 16 of seven balls.
06:53Well, I see, Mark, you paid particular attention to it.
06:56I see you have refreshed the minds of the national community in relation to that game.
07:00Yes, you know, very thrilling and very exciting game.
07:05And I'm happy that you also took the opportunity this afternoon, you know, to report the findings, or, as I should say, the response of the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
07:12And for all those who, you know, are recipients of awards in whatever form, you know, I want to congratulate you as well this afternoon.
07:20And, you know, Mark, I wanted to end by saying that to the young children in Trinidad and Tobago.
07:25The young children, you know, I know that they are in the school system as we speak.
07:30But I want to urge the parents and guardians who are listening this afternoon, you know, to direct their children to the success of the TKR.
07:38And, by extension, Jeremy Richards and also Christian Walcott in terms of the success.
07:42And understanding the power of sport.
07:45The power of sport.
07:46And, you know, we are about, we are hours away from celebrating, you know, Republic Day.
07:49And, you know, when you look at Republic Day, to go into it immediately, Mark.
07:52Republic Day, the word republic, this is about public interest.
07:56And the question that begs is what are you doing to be able to shape your country, shape Trinidad and Tobago, build Trinidad and Tobago, develop Trinidad and Tobago.
08:05And what these athletes and the sportsmen and the TKR players, you know, would have done is, you know, held firm to represent in Trinidad and Tobago.
08:18And placing Trinidad and Tobago on the world map from athletics context.
08:23And even from a TKR, putting it from a, while it may have been in a private context, but still in an international context in relation to the franchise.
08:28So, to the parents and guardians, I want to emphasize the importance of directing your children to look at the positive things.
08:35You know, ensure that it's embedded in what they, in how they think and what they do.
08:40And, you know, to the persons who are showing interest in sport, I want to urge your parents and guardians to, you know, take that extra step to ensure that you expose your children.
08:49Sport, Mark, and I can speak from it, you know, intimately.
08:52During my early days in terms of studying, going to school and playing sport, sport would have assisted me tremendously in terms of striking a balance.
09:00And up to today, you know, when I look at what sport have done to me in terms of my development, I think it's very, very important.
09:06So, you know, yes, we have recognized the success of TKR and the athletes.
09:10We have looked at the response of the government in terms of rewarding success and encouraging and motivating other persons to follow through.
09:16But most importantly here, let this success or successes mean something to the children of Trinidad and Tobago.
09:23Yes, certainly.
09:24And I know I think Jerry Mitchell spoke when he came in from the airport and he spoke about the fact that, yes, cricket is very popular in football.
09:32But when you go to athletic meets, there's a very small crowd.
09:37You have just maybe the family and friends of those athletes coming out.
09:41But he's calling for a greater appreciation of the athletics in this country.
09:47And we are hopeful that in the coming weeks, months, and even years, persons will find the time to go down there and support these young athletes in their bed to become one day a world champion.
09:58And most certainly, Mark, you know, when we're looking at Beyond the Tape and we're looking at crime and criminality, here it is that you have an active vehicle, a moving vehicle.
10:05That moving vehicle in relation to sport and whatever discipline that you find yourself with, as I said, athletics, tennis, football, cricket, what have you, it's a very important area.
10:17And I think a lot of investment should be placed in that area.
10:20And, you know, I'll say publicly, it's an area that I'm looking at very closely as well to see, you know, from a response to crime and criminality,
10:27how effective sport can be in terms of building communities and inspiring young people to turn away from a life of crime.
10:34So I think very important for the, as I indicated two days ago or three days ago, for the red, white, and black.
10:41And it is important for us to seize this moment.
10:43Mark, I would not like to see that we have a nine-day wonder and we lose touch with what has transpired over the last couple of days.
10:50I think we need to hold on to it, we need to build on it, and, you know, let's continue to ensure that Trinidad and Tobago enjoy that level of prosperity.
10:58Well, we hope that the relevant personnel will be taking their notes, of course.
11:02You know, sport is one of those things that helps to unify a nation and build a nation and build us that pride and that sense of accomplishment
11:10when we can get to the world stage and make our nation proud.
11:14All right, so, well, the Trinidad and Tobago police service would have issued a couple of media releases,
11:21one of them, of course, involving an incident at Andalus Trace and Losiru Beach in Irene on Monday.
11:30Apparently, a farmer was near his garden when he was accosted by two men, one armed with a firearm.
11:37And they dealt the victim, blows to his face, and ordered him to lie on the ground.
11:44The second suspect proceeded to search the victim's parked white Kia K-2700.
11:51They fled on foot with the victim's blue Samsung phone, valued at $1,500 and $2,200 in cash.
11:59A report was made, and I can tell you in no time at all, these suspects, ages 19 and 21, both from the Los Bajos area, were held and the items recovered.
12:12Well, you know, good work to the police in the Southwestern Division in terms of that quick response and, you know,
12:18ensuring that they apprehend those individuals who allegedly, you know, may have inflicted crime and criminality against the individual or individual as the case may be.
12:27And, Mark, again, linking it to Republic Day, every single citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, every single institution must recognize, as it relates to crime and criminality,
12:38that let us do an introspection, are we doing sufficient?
12:41Are we making our contribution?
12:44Because, you know, the response by the police in this particular instance, it would have been a community effort, both between the police and the community,
12:53to be able to apprehend those individuals, the sharing of put-in and information.
12:56So, again, knowing that we are the Eve of Republic, let us examine ourselves to see whether, in fact, we are making a contribution, one way or the other, to ensure that there is prosperity.
13:06And, as I said before, in relation to crime and criminality, are we doing sufficient in reference to crime and criminality?
13:11Yeah.
13:12And we also want to extend, you know, our congratulations to the Sangre and the police.
13:18They would have arrested two suspects.
13:20Apparently, they entered a vehicle on Sunday last of a taxi driver in the Guaico area.
13:28And upon reaching their location, one of the suspects apparently held the driver in a headlock and began choking him.
13:35And the other one stole $100 from his possession.
13:38The victim managed to escape the vehicle, at which point one of the suspects took control of the vehicle and drove off in a westerly direction.
13:45Police were contacted and they later discovered the vehicle abandoned.
13:50And following swift investigations, they were able to hold two suspects, ages 18 and 19, and they were taken into custody.
13:58Well, again, exceptional work on the part of the Eastern Division police officers.
14:01Because I know Eastern Division in recent times, Mark, you know, have been, you know, to the forefront with reference to crime and criminality.
14:07Even very serious allegations as well.
14:10So, to see that success coming from the Eastern Division, you know, I want to applaud it.
14:13And I want to urge all police divisions, all police stations, all specialist units, you know, to continue to be persistent in your crime detection, your crime prevention.
14:24To ensure that the people in the citizens of Trinidad and Trinidad continue to enjoy a good life.
14:27So, those are excellent news, Mark.
14:29And, you know, I hope that, you know, that the persons who are bent on breaching the criminal law, you know, I hope that they really have, you know, rethink.
14:38Rethink whether, in fact, it's worth it to be breaching the laws of Trinidad and Tobago.
14:43Where there are so many other opportunities or avenues that they can explore.
14:47You know, so, it's something that we need to think about.
14:49But, again, very, very refreshing news when you see law enforcement, you know, enjoying these levels of success.
14:54And, as I will always urge, you know, let us ensure that we take it through the justice system successfully.
15:00Yes.
15:00And, speaking of which, we will obviously need the public's help in locating at least some three masked gunmen who apparently went to the Canupia home of a couple, ages 60 and 63,
15:13with their 25-year-old son on Monday morning.
15:17And, apparently, the five men were dressed in dark-colored clothing and masks, entered the compound at around 5.52 a.m.
15:25Two of the intruders were armed with firearms.
15:27And, the men forced the family back into the house and began demanding cash and jewelry.
15:32They stole approximately $10,000, three cell phones, and a quantity of jewelry.
15:38So, of course, anybody with information about this particular home invasion, we are asking you to contact Veneres Police Station, 800-TIPS, or 999.
15:47Well, most certainly, Mark.
15:49And, you see them, Mark, that area, the so-called, quote-unquote, home invasion, which is really robbery, burglary, housebreaking, and, you know, those sort of offenses.
15:58It's troubling.
15:59It continues to be troubling.
16:01You know, I've seen over the last couple days and weeks that this particular crime continues to manifest itself.
16:06And, you know, I want to say to Trinidad and Tobago this afternoon, again, those who are aware, Mark, those who are aware of the persons who are responsible for these crimes.
16:16This is persons going into a person's castle, affecting a person's enjoyment of their property, inflicting harm, taking property without consent of the persons who are occupying the premises.
16:29Very, very serious offenses.
16:30And those who are aware of these persons, I urge you to bring forward the intelligence, bring forward the information, so that there can be an appropriate response from law enforcement with reference to these matters.
16:41And, Mark, sometimes we miss this part as well.
16:44When property is taken, most of the time there's a transaction with those properties, whether it be someone is going to engage in a sale,
16:53or whether it be someone who may be associating with that particular group, enjoying maybe the possession of a watch, maybe a piece of furniture, a piece of jewelry,
17:04you are also committing very serious acts of criminality, knowing that those property are property that has been derived from criminal conduct,
17:12and you are engaging in transaction, or you are possessing, or you are disguising, as the case may be.
17:17You can't be held criminally liable for what we overlook, a money laundering offense, or receiving stolen property.
17:26So, it's not only the persons who are committing the acts of robbery, burglary, and breaking.
17:31It's the persons who may be not at the crime scene, per se, but they are somewhere else who are now aware that property may have been taken in criminal conduct,
17:42and they are now enjoying it.
17:43Be careful, you are also engaging in criminal activity.
17:45Let us take away that market, Mark.
17:48Alright, it's day 64 of the state of emergency.
17:52Sorry, day 68.
17:53My producer correcting me.
17:56We have the figures for you.
17:59So, number of operations, 4,771.
18:03Target priority offenders, 1,789.
18:06Searches conducted, 31,291.
18:09Traffic operations, 3,125.
18:12Total persons arrested, 2,193.
18:16Traffic offenses detected, 17,619 firearms.
18:20Recovered 64 pistols, 35 revolvers, 19 shotguns, 19 rifles, and 3 air rifles.
18:27Of course, ammunition recovered in total, thus far, 1,684 rungs.
18:32The one area there that would have gone up is the 9mm, we had 829 rungs.
18:39Dangerous drug sees, 237,594.02 grams of marijuana, 8,078.08 grams of cocaine, 1,032 STC pills, and 15 grams of molly.
18:53Well, again, Mark, you know, to the citizenry in first instance, for the information intelligence that they're providing, and also the evidence of the efforts of law enforcement, with reference to the figures that we are seeing.
19:06You know, again, I want to commend the work of the police officers and the supporting agencies.
19:13Very important.
19:14Mark, these are not easy times.
19:17You know, when you're engaging in crime and criminality, it's not easy times.
19:20And, you know, persons who may have retrieved those firearms, ammunition, dangerous drugs.
19:24Sometimes, if you really look at the circumstances in which, or the length that they have to go in order to retrieve these firearms and dangerous drugs, it's definitely a risk and threat that is associated with some of these exercises, if not all.
19:37So, again, excellent work on the part of the law enforcement agencies, support agencies, and the citizenry.
19:43We ask you to continue, you know, to bring forward that intelligence and information to be able to deal with crime and criminality.
19:49All right, let's take a quick look now at our headlines.
20:24All right, so those are some of your headlines over the last 24 hours.

22:53Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
22:57I'm your host, Mark Bussan, joined today by Acting Sergeant Zaheer Ali of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Attainment Law.
23:03It's unofficially, legally speaking, Tuesdays rather than legally speaking, Wednesdays.
23:08Because of the holiday tomorrow, there'll be no Beyond the Tape.
23:11And we have a quick video feature to show you with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Pour and Order Top Dog Challenge.
23:23We all know how much you love your dogs and how proud of them you are.
23:30Now's your chance to show the world your dog's special skills.
23:33Enter your dog in the Pour and Order Top Dog Challenge,
23:37where your pups can go head-to-head with our police canine pros.
23:41Submit a video up to one minute long, showcasing your dog's police-style skills.
23:46Think obedience work.
23:50Or detection skills.
23:53Oh, tactical work.
23:58Be as creative as you like.
24:01Remember to add your dog's name and age and a fun caption and tell us how your dog's skills match up to the real TTPS canines.
24:10Remember to tag and follow the TTPS Police Museum pages and use the hashtag Pour and Order and hashtag Top Dog Challenge.
24:19Your videos will be featured on the TTPS Police Museum TikTok and Instagram pages.
24:24And the best part is, the dog with the most likes wins a prize.
24:29The competition is open to all citizens and residents of Trinidad and Tobago.
24:33And we welcome any type of dog and all breeds.
24:36Even Caribbean Shepherds.
24:38So what are you waiting for?
24:39Get your cameras rolling, let your pups shine,
24:42and submit your videos to our Pour and Order Top Dog Challenge.
24:46Because in this challenge, every dog has its day.
24:49Well, interesting there, you know, as, you know, the staff behind the scenes are saying that, you know,
25:10the police dogs will obviously have a distinct advantage based on those categories there.
25:17And I'm not saying that there are dogs that can do it.
25:20But my dog is too cute to be, you know, involved in that competition.
25:26Well, I agree with you, Mark.
25:26A very interesting initiative.
25:28And I want to, you know, acknowledge the initiative of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
25:31And it's very unique.
25:33And, you know, I must acknowledge it.
25:35And, you know, what is interesting is that behind the initiative is a very strong community engagement and partnership.
25:41And that's something that I want for us to understand.
25:43So, yes, we may be seeing it in the context of, you know, the Pour and Order.
25:47But really, it's the opportunity to have that engagement with the citizenry of Trinidad and Tobago.
25:51And perhaps, may I say, Mark, persons who have the opportunity to showcase their dog, you know, in terms of the skills.
25:59And you look at, I think there were three areas in terms of tactical detection and obedience.
26:07I think, you know, you may be surprised to know the quality that we have in the wider society.
26:12So, again, an excellent initiative to build community engagement and partnership.
26:16Excellent.
26:16But, Mark, I think it's important as well, you know, before we miss it.
26:20You know, a very troubling, troubling development over the last couple of days.
26:25And, you know, trouble, troubling, and, you know, it troubled me as well.
26:31And continue to trouble me in relation to that 12-year-old girl.
26:34Yes.
26:35And, you know, I want to take this opportunity to ask, you know, forcefully the citizenry of Trinidad and Tobago.
26:43And particularly in the area where this particular murder would have occurred.
26:49You know, based on the reports, based on the autopsy in terms of the blunt force trauma experienced by this 12-year-old.
26:58You know, the way that the Ministry of Education have spoken, the way that the residents have spoken about this child, you know, having an interest in football.
27:06And, again, we're speaking about sport.
27:09You know, perhaps the next national woman footballer, you know, has perished.
27:14You know, condolences to the family of that 12-year-old.
27:18But I'm asking forcefully the persons in that community or in the environs.
27:23That perpetrator or perpetrators, persons who have information, that child has now gone to Hamika.
27:32The responsibility lies with you to bring forward that information and bring justice to that child.
27:36You, if you are aware of that perpetrator and you do not act, you are equally responsible like the person who committed the act.
27:47Mark, I always said on this program, and I'm very emotional about this.
27:51You do not know, as I said before, we may have seen that in football.
27:54You do not know if that could have been a medical surgeon looking to save your life or the life of a citizen in Trinidad and Tobago.
28:00And sometimes, you know, sometimes we interfere with the heart and the soul of this nation when we interfere with these children.
28:08Because they are the future.
28:10And, you know, I'm making a very forceful call.
28:12And I ask the law enforcement agencies to exert every effort, especially when our children are concerned with references to this matter.
28:20A very troubling matter.
28:21When I saw it, Mark, you know, my mind running, you know, all the children in my family, you know, it really, it really touched me.
28:30And, you know, I'm forcefully asking the citizenry, perhaps I hope that we get a call later this afternoon or in the morning.
28:37Whether through anonymous, whether through the, you know, a trusted police officer to tell us that the perpetrator, the perpetrators,
28:45where we can find them so that we can now bring swift justice to this matter.
28:49This is the response that we need as a nation, Mark.
28:52If we're speaking about Republic Day, we're speaking about building a nation, we're speaking about enjoying the beauties of this nation.
28:59This is something that this country need to respond to.
29:01That we cannot, we must say, that we are not tolerating crime and criminality, especially as heinous as this one.
29:07So that was important.
29:07I'll share something with you after we take this caller.
29:09Caller, good evening and welcome to be on the tape.
29:12Hello.
29:13Hello, caller, you're live?
29:17Caller, are you there?
29:18Hello?
29:19Yes, sir, welcome to be on the tape.
29:21Go ahead.
29:23Mr. Bassard?
29:24Yes, you're live.
29:25Go ahead.
29:27Hello?
29:27Yes, sir, I'm hearing you.
29:29Go ahead.
29:30Seem to be having some trouble there with the phone lines.
29:33Hopefully, we'll get it rectified.
29:35And caller, we hope to hear from you in a short short.
29:39But yesterday, I know that the express, okay.
29:43All right, the caller is back with us.
29:45Welcome to be on the tape.
29:47Another caller.
29:47Good afternoon, caller.
29:49Welcome to be on the tape.
29:54Hello, caller.
29:58Okay, it seems we have lost that caller as well.
30:01And I know that, you know, sometimes we always have that problem, especially when rain falls and so on.
30:08But yesterday, I would have spoken about this particular incident.
30:14And I have to share this with you as a professional and I got some messages when I came off air from the senior homicide personnel in the south area that told me, yes, they can confirm blunt force trauma.
30:31But they're not quite sitting over the circumstances just yet.
30:35That is what they told me.
30:37They sent me a bunch of information relevant to the post-mortem, which I will not share.
30:43But I thought it's interesting that we should know that before it could have been caused by a fall.
30:51It could have been caused by somebody hitting your head against something.
30:53So they just said to keep all these things open in mind before we go into a particular direction and assume.
31:02And that was based on a newspaper report that they wanted to correct.
31:06Well, thank you very much on that, Mark, in terms of the information that you receive.
31:10But still, there's a child who sustained fatal injuries and persons who have information.
31:18We are looking forward to that information to bring justice to the situation.
31:22Whether it leads to detection of a crime or whether, in fact, it was circumstances that, you know, may not have attracted any foul play.
31:30It's important for us to look at this.
31:32It's very troubling in relation to this particular situation.
31:34And, again, I want to urge members of the public, you know, let us heed that call.
31:39Let us heed that call, if you are aware.
31:42And, you know, do not feel that whatever little information you have may be insufficient.
31:46You never know that information that you have may just be what is required to be able to solve that puzzle.
31:51So I'm asking for a response in relation to this matter.
31:54And, by extension, every other crime that you may have been aware of, whether it be a murder, whether it be a kidnapping,
32:00whether it be a home invasion, quote-unquote, you know, bring forward that information
32:03so we can have those crimes solved quickly and those persons placed before the courts of Trinidad and Tobago.
32:10All right.
32:11We're going to take a short break.
32:12And we're hopeful when we get back, we're going to take your calls.
32:14Stay with us.
32:15There's huge bubbles all over New York City.

34:02A message from the TTPS.
34:09Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
34:24I'm your host, Mark Bassant.
34:25Joined today by Acting Sergeant Zakir Ali, a tenant law with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
34:32All right.
34:32We have our first call on the line.
34:35Good evening, caller.
34:35Welcome to Beyond the Tape.
34:36Hello, caller.
34:40Hello.
34:41Yes, go ahead.
34:42We're hearing you.
34:42Are you all hearing me?
34:44Yes.
34:46Are you all hearing me?
34:47I am hearing you.
34:48Go ahead.
34:50Hello.
34:51Yes.
34:52You go ahead, ma'am.
34:52We're hearing you.
34:53Good evening to both of you.
34:58Officer, I looked at you on the program when they asked you about it.
35:03What you thought about it, Mark.
35:04And what you said, you said the reason why is they won't have won and you will read through.
35:09Because when I see the statute and I realized that they won't be taught and they decided to back.
35:14I said, well, they cannot make more than 140 and we will have to pay them by that.
35:17So congratulations to them.
35:19Now, the first one concerning, this young child who they have found.
35:24I heard her mother and I heard her father say different things concerning, you know, how she might have died and they don't know.
35:30And I really hope that they get whoever did that to that young child because she is so young.
35:36Something like that to happen to her child, I mean, that was really ridiculous.
35:40And I see when people continue to interfere, looking at police, shooting out at police.
35:46And then when police kill someone, everybody makes a big fuss about it.
35:49And they don't burn any tires.
35:50They don't do things like that.
35:51But they make a big fuss and we don't know the real reason.
35:54And there are five persons who dress in a boss of a tactical way and they're going robbing persons.
35:59I hope they find them.
36:00They really find them because they're already overdoing it.
36:02My last thing is, what can be done about false number plays?
36:07Something has to be done about false number plays because people continue to have that and it continues to get to me.
36:13All the best to all of you.
36:14But officer Ali, you really, really knew what you were saying.
36:16Thank you very much.
36:19Well, thank you, Kola.
36:19You make me blush this afternoon, Kola, in terms of, you know, recognizing the way that I predicted, you know, that game.
36:25And I want to thank you, TKR, for, you know, following through in terms of my prediction.
36:28But, again, Kola, thank you very much for your submissions with reference to, again, emphasizing the importance of finding the perpetrator or perpetrators for that particular crime.
36:38Or, as Mark indicated, if, in fact, it was not associated with any acts of criminality, at least let us bring some conclusion to, you know, put the nation at ease in reference to that.
36:50But, again, thank you for your submission and your involvement and active participation on Be On The Tape.
36:54Yes, certainly.
36:56All right.
36:56We want to, we have a second caller on the line.
36:59Caller, good evening and welcome to Be On The Tape.
37:01Hello.
37:02Yes, I'm hearing you.
37:03Go ahead.
37:04Are you all hearing me?
37:06I am.
37:06Go ahead.
37:07Hello.
37:09Producer, just let him know we are hearing him, please.
37:12Good afternoon, sir.
37:14Ali and Mark Bassard.
37:16Good evening to you, sir.
37:17A couple of things, and I'm going to focus on the CTPS today, and by extension, the utterance of the newly minted commission on police.
37:32I am on board with him, and in fact, he indicated that the opposition possibly wants him to fail.
37:42I believe he has the revital, he has the support of a number of policemen within the police service, could get him to deliver what is required and what he sees as to move this country forward.
37:56For example, I believe that the police, I'm very strong, the police service commissioner is not supporting him, and it's time we replace them with commissioners who understand what is required.
38:17On that subject, I want to basically give a citizen, several citizen awards for four police officers, senior and junior.
38:31And I'm going to think, this is a personal gratitude I want to express to WPC Sotero, W21284, PC Passat 21606, and the ship commander, Corporal Ramsey 13990 of the Covent Police Station.
38:54They assisted my wife on Thursday evening, and I am so grateful for them, and I think that shows what the police service can do, and the sort of officers.
39:09The other person I want to commend, I was privy to a crime symposium at the Flamingwood Ministry on Saturday,
39:21and I was privy for a presentation given by A.S.P. Mark Anandes.
39:34He was crystal care as to what we as citizens must do with respect to home invasion.
39:46For example, I am a senior, and if I am pulling my tree, and I see somebody jump over the wall, and I don't have a, I grab a cut tree in my yard, and what the former prime minister said, get them a blight,
39:59I know what I have to do.
40:00I have to protect my family, and I'm going to do it forcefully.
40:04If I am in the parliament now, I know how I will vote.
40:09I will vote to proceed with the legislation.
40:11And the last point, the heinous crime committed on that young lady, I think this present government, I know I'm going to address it,
40:22because our foreign minister has raised the issue in the United Nations earlier today or yesterday.
40:30So I believe we're moving forward with the current leadership, mainly the COP and the good officers behind the police,
40:42but I also need some sanitization with respect to some of the leadership of the current police service who were part of the day of policing.
40:52I'm going to have a nice evening.
40:53Thank you very much, Kola.
40:56Mark, you know, it's always refreshing again, you know, hearing the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, you know,
41:01basically appraising the work of the police officers with their, I should say, the response.
41:07And to those officers that the Kola have identified, I also want to join in by recognizing, you know, your efforts.
41:13Yes, we have taken note of the police, respective police officers in the Central Division, I think he made mention, in the Coover Police District.
41:23So again, to the Central Division, Coover Police, you all continue that great work, because the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago is paying attention.
41:30And, you know, you must always remember that your responsibility in law is to protect and serve with pride.
41:38And, you know, the Kola have just exemplified, you know, that execution of the duties on the part of the police officers.
41:45So I want to recognize that.
41:46And even the Assistant Superintendent, and I think it's Mr. Hernandez, you know, who did the presentation with reference to safety and security.
41:53I also want to recognize him this afternoon.
41:55But thank you very much, Kola, for your, again, your effective feedback, which is important for us.
42:01Yes, certainly.
42:02You know, when police officers do good, it's really highlighted.
42:07I'd rather, the opposite is highlighted when they do negative things that impact the country and it's brought forward in the media.
42:16So in the same state, we want to congratulate those officers who would have assisted the Kola's wife in whatever capacity.
42:22And, of course, ASP Hernandez for shedding light on the rights of our citizens when it comes to, I guess, defending their property.
42:31And as we know, in the coming weeks, the standing ground legislation will be highly critical as to see, you know, where we go and when it's enacted into law.
42:43Yeah, most certainly. And, you know, Mark, when you're speaking about Republic Day, we spoke about it in the context of citizens playing a role.
42:49Well, if you're looking for evidence of the citizen being encouraged to play a role, that lawmaking process, we have seen the active engagement by the national community with a piece of legislation that, you know, will be laid hopefully soon in Parliament.
43:04So, again, there are many ways, Mark, to leave your mark. You know, that sounds very related, right?
43:12There are many ways to leave your mark. So, again, whether it's legislative, whether part of your lawmaking process, whether, even from a law enforcement, you know, making sure that you're poorly or out of office, you know, seriously.
43:26And from a citizen context, you know, seeing positive things, speaking on it, or, again, joining and urging the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to be able to assist and partner to deal with crime and criminality.
43:38And even from the sporting context, these sportsmen went out to represent Trinidad and Tobago to the best that they could.
43:48And, you know, thankfully that they have brought home some success for us to enjoy.
43:51So, many different ways to do it. You find your way and you make your contribution.
43:55All right. And on that note, we're going to take a short break.
43:58And when we get back, we'll take some of your calls. Stay with us.

46:11New Colossal Bubble Mascara from Maybelline, New York.
46:13Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
46:27I'm your host, Mark Bassan, joined today by Acting Sergeant Zaheer Ali of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Attorney at Law.
46:34We continuously try to encourage motorists to be cautious on the nation's roadways and, of course, even that it's posing to be difficult at times.
46:45I know the weather sometimes plays factors in and, of course, speed and so on.
46:50There were two accidents over the last 24 hours.
46:52There's this one near the Kokoreid area there.
46:57And you can see that the vehicle seems to have overturned.
47:01And, you know, it's East Bangla in there in the Kokoreid area.
47:04That was earlier on today, just after lunch.
47:08And this was actually in the Dago Martin area last night, main road.
47:15The police on the scene there.
47:17And this is a vehicle front.
47:20And another two vehicles, actually, seem to have had a head-on collision of some sort.
47:27And we're hopeful that the occupants of those vehicles from last night and also today was not, you know, badly hurt.
47:38Well, Mark, every time I, you know, you report accidents, you know, I will always take the opportunity to urge
47:43and emphasize the importance to the citizenry of Trinidad and Tobago.
47:48After, you know, placing them in a position to appreciate their life and the life of other persons
47:54or the well-being of other persons on the nation road.
47:58Being in charge of a vehicle is a very serious responsibility.
48:02And not only looking at your skills and ability to be in charge of the vehicle,
48:08but also ensuring that the vehicle is word worthy.
48:12It's very, very important.
48:14But, Mark, we have spoken about this issue of accidents.
48:16You know, there's a, you know, a multifaceted way to look at it.
48:20I'm certain that if you do some deep analysis, it would not be attributed to one cause,
48:27but it may be several things that we need to look at.
48:29And, again, I make a salient call to Trinidad and Tobago, any decision-makers in particular.
48:33So let us look at this issue of road safety.
48:35You know, place that, you know, very high up in the agenda,
48:39even if it has to, you know, be informed by legislative change,
48:43maybe even a change in culture if we have to do that,
48:45looking at our regulations, you know, our drive-in tests, you know,
48:50whatever it requires, we need to look at this area with some perspective.
48:54But, again, let us be, you know, responsible on the nation road.
48:59You know, we all traverse that road at some point in time.
49:02So let us, you know, look out for each other, that duty and care to each other.
49:07All right.
49:07So we were talking earlier on about the good work that police officers often do,
49:12and it goes unrecognized at times.
49:14Yes.
49:14And this is a really, really light but beautiful moment at the Sangri Grandi Secondary School.
49:24You're seeing here a police officer taking the time to tie a student's tie for him,
49:32perhaps this morning or yesterday morning.
49:35But certainly, you know, when we think about police officers in schools now,
49:39you know, they're not just there to make sure that you stand in line or you do what is correct,
49:46but they also have this way of helping students if you, I guess, you know, the ties and so on.
49:53I remember learning that time I tied to my father at a very young age going to Napri Mo College.
49:58So, well, again, Mark, any acts, I should say, of kindness, or in this case, you know, to uplift someone,
50:11should always be saluted.
50:13You know, it's building on your good deeds.
50:15And, again, you know, having identified that a police officer, again, is involved in that process,
50:20you know, it must be saluted.
50:23I'll say, though, that, you know, from an educational context, I would like it to be done responsibly.
50:29You know, if there's a request for it, and, you know, there's proper check and balance,
50:34so there's no unauthorized engagements.
50:36Yes, understood.
50:37So, you know, I just want to ensure that, you know, we still follow the protocol,
50:40but, you know, I want to stay on the positive side where, you know, it is, in fact, something to speak about.
50:45And I love to see when, you know, not only from our law enforcement context, Mark,
50:50let us look right within your own family.
50:53Look within your own community.
50:55Every day we traverse our community.
50:57Every day we go to our family home.
50:59When last did you look your significant other?
51:02When last did you look at your parents?
51:03When last did you look at your aunts and your uncles, your cousins and so forth,
51:07your niece, your nephew, depending on any circumstances,
51:09and tell them thanks for something that they may have done?
51:12This is things that we need to bring back and culcate.
51:15In terms of how we think and how we behave.
51:17So then, if we are embracing this on a smaller scale at home,
51:20we can now extend it outside in a community context, in a national context.
51:25You know, it's simple things.
51:27And if you look, you know, and I don't mean to be, you know, going into a religious context,
51:32but look at every religious context,
51:35and you will see what we have been taught, what we've been advised.
51:38And let us go back to these basic things so that we start appreciating why we are here.
51:44What's the purpose?
51:44Mark, the next second is promised to no one.
51:48And my question to all of us, as we come and we, to descend, you know, on this afternoon,
51:54are you prepared for those who, and they believe that, you know, they'll meet their maker?
52:01Are you prepared to answer to your maker?
52:03Are you prepared for that day to be assessed as to how you went about living your life?
52:07And it's something that is very serious.
52:10And I've always used you as an example in a media context.
52:13Do you think that you are representing that constitutional right to the best of your ability for nation building?
52:21And if you are satisfied, well, okay.
52:24Similarly, am I representing Trinidad and Tobago to the best that I can?
52:28And similarly, the decision makers, are you placing the best minds in the places that we require to be able to move Trinidad and Tobago?
52:36You know, and I just use that as an example in a three-way context.
52:40So, as we approach Republic Day, let us sit and let us reflect.
52:46There's a lot of great things happening in Trinidad and Tobago at every different level.
52:49But at the same time, there are some things that we need to treat with urgently.
52:53We are making efforts with crime and criminality, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
52:59You are hearing it from the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
53:01They are calling for excellent policing, professional policing.
53:04And, you know, I am asking every citizen of Trinidad and Tobago to recognize that very important function that they have.
53:10And, Mark, I always spoke about the oath officers and the persons who are not on oath.
53:17We all have that responsibility to police the place.
53:21You may not have, some may not have the authority to initiate proceedings.
53:25That is for the oath officers.
53:26But you can police the place by what?
53:28By being an intelligence officer.
53:30So, you know, I just want to just share those words of encouragement.
53:34You know, this is our red, white, and black.
53:36This is where we live.
53:37This is where our families live.
53:39This is where we enjoy a decent standard of living.
53:43And, you know, let us embrace it.
53:45Let us, you know, let us make positive contribution, even to the environment.
53:49You know, very important to the environment.
53:52We have heard about noise and noise pollution.
53:55Let us be responsible in that act as well as we go forward.
53:58And, you know, may God continue to bless all of us to see many more happy republics.
54:02And just for the matter of the, for those children who are listening with their parents and guardians.
54:07Mark, this issue of the Republic Day is really, in our republican constitution, it created the office of president.
54:15Right.
54:16Before we had the governor general.
54:18Basically, our head of state, we were dependent on the United Kingdom.
54:21But by having the republican constitution, we created the office of president so that we have our own head of state.
54:27And if you want to see the significance, yes, there have been arguments to look at reform.
54:32But if you want to look at the issue of the present status quo we're in, the president of Trinidad and Tobago, the office of president, declared the state of emergency in Trinidad and Tobago.
54:41The president enacted the emergency powers regulation that governs persons' conduct as we speak.
54:48So you see the significance of these offices.
54:50Yes, there are arguments for reform.
54:51But I just thought it was important as an academic context for our children who are listening in particular.
54:57And while we may have celebrated on the 24th of September, it was really the 1st of August 1976.
55:02But the first sitting of parliament came on the 24th of September in which they gave the holiday.
55:07So just a little bit of history, but appreciate where we were given the opportunity for full self-governance, full self-determination.
55:15And let us embrace it.
55:17And let us put Trinidad and Tobago always at the forefront.
55:20Mark, like always, I want to wish you all the best as well for Republic Day.
55:23I always urge you and all media houses that you all have significant roles to play in ensuring that we really are, or really is, sorry, the republic that we are striving to be.
55:36You all have a great responsibility to ensure that happens.
55:39Well, Sidney, food for thought there, Acting Sergeant Ali.
55:44And we just want to quickly move you to two town meetings, rather, one town meeting, rather.
55:53It's the Northern Central Division, PRCO.
55:57It's actually the day after tomorrow, Thursday, 25th of September, 2025, at 6 p.m., the PRCO Police Station Conference Room, Golden Grove, PRCO.
56:08Of course, we encourage you to come out and meet with the officers in your area.
56:12They want to hear your concerns, perhaps your recommendations, and so on, to make your community and your area a safer one.
56:22Well, again, Mark, these are very important engagements.
56:29And, again, we spoke about the opportunity to contribute.
56:32Here is the opportunity to contribute, even if it's from a law enforcement context.
56:36But you could use this opportunity to engage law enforcement, to probably engage what?
56:40Another entity.
56:41For example, you may have issues with your roads.
56:43You may have issues with your lighting.
56:44And you may not be getting the traction, but the poor lighting may be contributing to crime.
56:49Bring it to the attention to law enforcement so that we can engage the Public Utilities Ministry to be able to solve your problem.
56:55This is the community engagement and partnership, Mark, that we require.
56:59But, again, Trinidad and Tobago, let us continue to be humble.
57:03Let us continue to be focused.
57:05And let us continue to be making the proper decisions.
57:08And if we are not certain about something, let us seek advice from persons who can guide us and guide us properly.
57:16And to the children of Trinidad and Tobago, you all continue to look in the direction of these sportsmen in terms of what they achieved recently.
57:24And let that direct your path in terms of your education and any other career path that you may want.
57:30Dedication, commitment, and listen to the speeches of Jermaine Richards, Keyshawn Wolcott, and the TKR players.
57:38Listen to them.
57:39Understand them.
57:40Look at their life.
57:41Look at what they have to endure.
57:45All right.
57:45I could not have said it better myself.
57:47Obviously, I want to wish everyone a happy Republic Day.
57:50Please be safe if you're going out on the roads tomorrow for any kind of celebration.
57:54Don't drink and drive and observe your speed limits.
57:57Remember, repeat tonight at 11.30.
57:59No repeat tomorrow morning.
58:01Of course, and the TV6 News is up next.
58:02We'll see you back here on Thursday at 6.
