00:00Welcome to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bussan. Welcome to our viewers across
00:13Trinidad and Tobago and of course viewers across the globe. It's Thursday. A lot has
00:20been happening over the last 24 hours and I know you have also been stuck looking at
00:26social media. There were police exercises in central Trinidad in which I believe three
00:33persons were shot and killed apparently in a robbery of some nature as ACP Meister would
00:41explain to us a little later on following an exercise that took place in the enterprise
00:47area early this morning. Now that would have occurred just before that particular shooting.
00:53The shooting sorry would have happened just before the exercise and then of course the
00:58big news that everybody is talking about. The police commissioner has been detained
01:03and has been questioned in relation to the SSA probe and certainly I know a lot of people
01:08are going to be asking a number of questions. The Express newspaper, I myself would have
01:13broken the story last night online where the SSA director, former SSA director Major Roger
01:19Bess was detained by police in the ongoing probing to the SSA involving the importation
01:25of two sniper rifles and the questioning of the commissioner which I understand is still
01:31happening at this point from officers of the Investigations and Intelligence Unit under
01:37Deputy Commissioner Suzette Martin involves along that line the same type of investigation
01:44as it relates to the importation of rifles. So we certainly we're going to be tracking
01:49and looking at that story and I know a lot of people will have a lot to say about that
01:52as time wears on and today of course we want to introduce acting ASP Ishmael Pitt from
01:58the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. Welcome sir, how are you? Well it hasn't been so much
02:05of a good day but it's always a pleasure to be here. Yeah I know I know it's it's pretty
02:11tough and I know that you know a lot of people will be looking for answers as it relates
02:16to this SSA probe that has been happening for the last 10 months and the Prime Minister
02:21would have spoken about it in Parliament last July revealing some contents of the audit
02:29and what it would have indicated in terms of you know the these high-powered weapons
02:35that were brought in by the then sitting director of the SSA which we understand the only the
02:44army is allowed to bring in those types of rifles and of course the procurement procedures
02:50are under heavy scrutiny as it pertains to such so we'll be monitoring that story as
02:55we go along. So there's also the issue of I know people were talking about the carnival
03:01permits trying to apply for them online and we want to let you guys know that the online
03:07application is the the system has now been rectified where you can actually apply for
03:13the permits. Of course yeah so there was some issues but it has since been rectified
03:18so persons who are so desirous you know you can feel free to apply by the online plan.
03:23What was the what would have been the issue involving the well I can't say directly what
03:28the issue was but clearly it was our technical nature it has since been resolved so that
03:34that service is now available. Right and we want to encourage you if you applied yesterday
03:38and you we are asking you to reapply online so that I think what would have happened yesterday
03:44it would not have gone through because the system was down and the TPS is asking members
03:50of the public who are requesting permission or carnival permits for their vehicles and
03:55so on to reapply through the online system and hopefully everything goes smoothly this
04:02time around. And of course you know we had that shooting earlier this morning apparently
04:07and we'll see later ACP Meister was talking about you know people that were allegedly
04:12involved in a robbery and they tried to escape police would have encountered the car with
04:19five individuals in them and of course allegedly they shot at the police and keeping with the
04:26use of force force of policy. Yeah. They would have returned fire. Yeah well it's no secret
04:33that based on what is happening I mean so much has happened we have increased our presence
04:39and we are finding more and more that we are being involved in deadly encounters. For that
04:46reason we would want to ask persons members of the public number one to continue to provide
04:53us with the information and for those who are bent on continuing their criminal activities
04:58you know we have placed our officers in a position of training we have placed our officers
05:06in a position of ensuring that once we are faced with those type of encounters that we
05:13exercise all measures that are necessary and lawful in order to preserve ourselves. Condolences
05:21to the family it's a matter that will be investigated but we anticipate that in the
05:29not too distant future it will be a case of persons now coming to understand that the way
05:35of crime could never be one that is positive it does it never ends well. Definitely. All right
05:43we're gonna take a look now at our headlines.
05:51All right so those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours and we were telling
06:13you earlier on about police operation that took place this morning in the enterprise area our
06:21cameraman Devon Parker was there at the beginning with police officers ACP Meister and superintendent
06:30from the Central Division there having a chat just before the the exercise began and I was listening
06:41to one of the clips where ACP Meister spoke about the unfortunate incident involving the that would
06:48have taken place a couple hours before this exercise began referencing you know the alleged
06:54robbery that took place in the central area police had to respond. So we're seeing here that the
07:00police are you know at some of the residences in the central area I think they covered the
07:06Chaguanas, Konopia but mostly the enterprise area where they would have conducted various searches
07:14you know for illicit items. Yes indeed and these operations are widespread you know they are not
07:21limited limited to any one area however we are being intelligence-led and that simply means that
07:29we have information of particular areas particular persons and for that reason the targeting is going
07:34to be our focus. We are going to be unrelenting as we have displayed within the last couple of
07:41weeks as a matter of being able to sustain this type of activity and for that reason we continue
07:46to thank our officers who have been very very very cooperative supportive and present regarding this
07:53fight that we are facing at this point in time. We will definitely have more images of that
07:59tomorrow you know that the police recovered a number of items I think they were still kind of
08:04looking at tabulating certain things. Yes. When I spoke with East P. Maestad earlier he was actually in a
08:09meeting. Yeah. So I imagine that they would have found various things and I'm sure it would be also
08:13added into the data that the police is collating as we go day to day in the state of emergency. Of
08:21course indeed. All right. So there was an accident that occurred yesterday in the Rio Claro Mar area
08:29involving a school bus that was carrying children and you see the bus was hit by the vehicle and I
08:39don't know the bus attempted to actually turn and veered over the little the incline there. Yeah.
08:48And toppled over of course people rushing. I don't know if the driver would have panicked
08:54after he was hit and then maybe in this case the reverse he actually went forward and you know I
09:03am hopeful that the children were not hurt or at least not badly hurt. Yes badly injured that is
09:11correct and you have said it from all indications it appears as though something went definitely
09:17wrong and possibly there may have been some panicking taking place or something that you
09:25know led to it reaching to the stage because there was a collision at first and for whatever
09:31reason the vehicle end up going down the hill. Yes. Yes so as you said we trust that no one was
09:40seriously injured. I mean you see the vehicle struck here and then you see the driver was
09:47attempting to veer even if he was trying to turn the vehicle make a u-turn. Yes. I don't know if
09:53his averaging was correct because you would see that there's limited space to make that u-turn
09:57there and definitely a dangerous drop there. Well fortunately the investigation would reveal
10:03exactly what transpired what occurred and you know we'll be better off in terms of because
10:08the investigation of accidents is not only limited to determining whether someone was right or wrong.
10:14Sometimes issues identified even regarding the mechanisms of the vehicle you know sometimes
10:22even in terms of the roadway whether we need to add signage whether we need to add other mitigating
10:27factors in terms of barriers and so on and so forth. So the investigation of accidents it's
10:33something that it transcends the policing realm and it also involves that total management of
10:39the roadway that takes security safety and all these things into account. All right we're going
10:47to take a short break and when we come back we'll take your calls stay with us.

14:14Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan joined today by acting ASP Ishmael Pitt
14:18of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and I do believe we have a caller on the line. Caller,
14:23good evening. Hi, good evening Mr. Bassan and also good evening Sir Officer Pitt. Pleasant
14:30good evening. Good evening sir. I want to say first of all I want to give some positive
14:36credit to the police service. Our interaction this evening where I had to get some information
14:44from them and so honestly I experienced a little difficulty a couple days prior but
14:50the person who I dealt with you know tried to get a sense of everything and gave me some real
14:57assurance that I felt confident and solid information so I want to give that positive
15:02compliments on that level. Thank you. Honestly you know it seems now just from a humble perspective
15:12it might have some you know layers that might need review to make things smoother for officers.
15:21I will leave it there. One idea that came to my mind is that the administration is kind of doing
15:26itself in schools and even also in those places with other maybe once in a while officers could
15:33to do like presentations just to see if the person comes to remind students when they're
15:41traveling on the road it has to be two miles, stay narrow for adults in those places you know
15:47where they try to leave, where they try to, where the streets are, people and everything and last point is
15:54I don't know if it's the last point but I'll leave it there.
16:00Okay thanks much.
16:03Yes yeah yeah so firstly we appreciate the feedback regarding the positives and we would
16:11urge our officers to continue in that vein. A second point more or less is encouraging or
16:18recommending suggesting that police officers go into schools and I'm thinking other areas of
16:24learning and have that dialogue with with students and giving them tips in terms of safety and
16:32probably other behavioral issues. So that is it is a welcome suggestion. I am pleased though to report
16:39to the public that at present that it does take place but there's always room for improvement.
16:46So if it if we can expand it further and we can touch more lives, we can impact more students, we
16:51can get the information more widespread and we believe that it would have a greater impact and
16:56you know we'll be able to achieve the objectives that are set out. All right thanks much. I think
17:01we have another call on the line. Caller good evening. Good afternoon. Good evening sir.
17:08Good afternoon. I think you will be aware of who is calling 45,000.
17:2345,000. Please give me another clue caller please.
17:28Um the check before the uncheck.
17:33The 45,000.
17:3645,000. Okay well here what you can do caller you can probably leave your number for the
17:45producer so that I can communicate with you off air because um
17:51not too soon. Yeah I'm not I'm not clear as to what you're speaking about. I don't know if you
17:55unless you want to to add some more into it.
18:01Caller. All right seem seem like the I think uh the call has gone or he's probably going to be
18:08talking to our producer. Yeah. So we hope for that um you know and I know that we this is not a issue
18:15that we um would skirt around but you know the there's obviously a level of concern because we
18:22have had I think we've reached double figures now with the police shootings in the state of
18:27emergency and uh while I know that the police uh in some cases they they don't have a choice if
18:34individuals open fire on them um in some measure as we had seen um when the guys who would have
18:42robbed the supermarket. Yeah but you say we don't have a what? You I mean but if they if they are
18:48armed and they fire the police and you are in capability the use of force policy. Yeah we will
18:53do what we have to do. Yeah. You know so that's that's why I'm just saying the concern uh raised
19:00by citizens at some point but we'll revisit that in a minute we have a we have a call on the line.
19:05Okay. Caller good evening. Hi good afternoon gentlemen. Good evening sir.
19:11Jaywalking in Trinidad and Tobago should be a crime chargeable by the police. The pedestrians
19:19take for granted that they could just jump out into the street at any time while the driving public
19:25is being charged. Pedestrians in Trinidad and Tobago need to learn how to use the crosswalk
19:34properly. How to not jump off of the pavement and just come in front of the car.
19:41Yeah. Jaywalking is not a chargeable crime in Trinidad and Tobago. Is it officer? No we have no
19:47offense um dubbed jaywalking. We have no offense categorized as jaywalking. No. As before you
19:55should it ever start and think about that take a look at what goes on in the street?
20:02Well we would be able to make recommendations and it's for the lawmakers that put it in place
20:10but it is something that we could consider because caller um your observations as probably a
20:16pedestrian or a member of the motor in public is one that you know we we would value and I'm
20:22thinking that probably there's something that you have seen um and it is of such concern that you
20:28believe that the law should now include jaywalking. So maybe that's the case. I was charged by a good
20:36the Trinidad and Tobago police service and I was trying to explain to the officer that the
20:40pedestrian was wrong but the life of me he could not understand it. So yeah I am on the
20:47on the hunt now to help expose this and bring it to your attention because my god.
20:54Yeah. Have a good evening. Thank you sir and thank you for your contribution. Oh you know it
20:59having discriminated driving it have reckless driving having discriminate walking and reckless
21:04walking. No. But but honestly he has a point you know. Yeah he has a point. You see you know people
21:10sometimes you are at a corner and the light is green and you you you drive across the intersection
21:16and then suddenly somebody appears. Yes. Crossing and you have to pass your break. Yes he has a good
21:21point a very good point. So it might be something I guess for the police to look at. Yeah to make a
21:26recommendation we can make that recommendation. All right let's hope that uh that it comes to
21:30fruition. We're going to take a short break and we'll be back. Stay with us.

23:42This is Engine Season 3. Let's go.
24:00Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan. Joined today by acting ESP Ishmael
24:04Pitt from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. The numbers to call, remember 623-1711
24:09extensions 1996 and 1997. I know our last caller was talking about jaywalking so I'm going to let
24:17you set up this segment. Yes and you have mentioned that he has a great point and I agree that he does
24:24have a good point and before we go though there's an offense and it's some real offenses that come
24:29obstructing the free passageway. It's probably the closest we can get
24:33that whole issue of jaywalking but under the MVNRD Act it doesn't really exist. So
24:40all right. Protect yourself. Protect yourself. Yes.
25:00But I on this phone I just crossing the road. You ain't watching your driving. Pedestrian's
25:05always right man. I cross in the road. You want a bunch more? You want a bunch more?
25:12Contrary to public belief that the pedestrian is always right. You are the way till it's safe to
25:17cross. You seen any zebra there? But it's a road I could cross anyway. But it's a road I could cross
25:24anyway. But it was safe for me. You ain't watching when you're driving.
25:41She was she's about to go fishing. Apparently or hiking. But there's so many lessons to be
25:47learned from that simple encounter. She's on her phone. She's clearly distracted. She has walked
25:55into the path of a motor vehicle. Clearly she hasn't exercised situational awareness because
26:03she is oblivious to what is happening in her immediate environment and largely Mark we are
26:08seeing so much of that today where persons it could be the cell phone it could be just absent
26:18minded are placing themselves in a position where they are not aware still what is happening in
26:24their environment and it can contribute to you becoming a victim of crime. It can contribute to
26:29you being involved in an accident. Probably I have seen and I don't know if you have ever observed
26:36this. Persons walk into a lamp pole and walk into I mean and it you know thank you very much.
26:44Thank you and serious injury could occur from that. This is a very very serious serious issue
26:50and you know in in a society that continues to be changing we need also to change our behavior
26:58for the positive. All right I hope you all will take heed those who like to walk and talk on their
27:03phones. All right I think we have a call on the line. Caller good evening.
27:08Hi good day sir. Good evening sir. Good evening sir. Yes first time caller. I just wanted to
27:15find out something. Is it unlawful to when you're coming off the ramp on the highway
27:23to pass all the line up on the right side and then come back in front and cut everybody off
27:29and block and take a turn. Because I noticed a trend been happening every time. It's like rush
27:37hour in the morning and rush hour in the evening. So I just wanted to find out if it's unlawful
27:41or is it a bigoted offense. Thank you. I'll stop it. There's an offense called improper overtaking
27:48on the left and if it means coming off the ramp and now we are using the shoulder in order to pass
27:53traffic then obviously you are improperly overtaken. So if that is the circumstance you
27:59are experiencing caller then definitely it is an offense and it can also go further towards
28:04dangerous driving because we know that the shoulder is reserved for emergencies and you know
28:11persons who may have to pull at the side and what have you and when you use that avenue in order to
28:16get from point A to point B you can contribute to a serious accident taking place. Yes you see a lot
28:22of taxi drivers as well doing guilty of that on the shoulders on the highways. So they're looking
28:27for it. Serious traffic yeah. Is that serious? We have another caller on the line. Caller good evening.
28:33Caller good evening. Hi good afternoon. Good evening ma'am. Welcome to the afternoon support party sponsor.
28:40Good evening ma'am. I'm addressing to you and I just want to make a short quick observation.
28:47On Tuesday I'm asking the officer if there is some way that he could put a pin
28:54in somewhere for me please. On Tuesday my granddaughter was coming from a peaceful direction
29:01when she reached Nova Junction the light was on red. She came out of the taxi and the other taxi
29:09behind him stopped also to have to cross the road. A driver coming from the west direction
29:18driver driving a car a normal car. No cars on the front of anything like that.
29:25Broke the traffic light and came two meters from my granddaughter.
29:30I'm asking if there's some way that the transit police could like extend NY speed and
29:43like from San Juan go to Key West or St. Joseph whatever. Do they come down on this side as well?
29:51Could you could you repeat the exact area please ma'am? Nova Junction. Yes the transit police
29:59also function in the Mova area. The entire east-west corridor if I dare say.
30:07So we would we would.
30:12That is not 20 miles forward. That is not 60 miles forward. That is not even 60 miles forward.
30:18Because if you have to screech. Yes. After breaking the traffic light.
30:24Yeah. If you understand what I'm saying. Of course. Of course. She was she how is she feeling at 15
30:34years old standing in the middle of the road. Everything stopped for her to cross. The light
30:38on red giving her permission to cross and he broke the traffic light.
30:45Yeah. So I don't know if there's something they could do to check up on these drivers that are
30:51driving on the bus route with all their CDIs passed and escorting if they endanger other
30:57people's lives physically, mentally, emotionally. Yes ma'am. Right? And it's not just like on two
31:07car march up and when they fly right. Like two car march up. This is a human like they all know
31:11things. Yeah. Right? And he continued driving. We didn't even get to get his vehicle number.
31:18He just showed up. Right? He just showed up. When he realized that he may be bumped up. He just showed up and continued going in an easy direction.
31:38All right. Thanks so much Kuala. Luckily. Yeah. Thank God that she was not struck.
31:43Yes. I know but it would obviously have a very um you know shaken up as uh clearly what I've
31:49indicated. Clearly. And and for you know that Mova Junction as we know it even with the all those
31:56traffic lights there there's still some crazy degree. I think a couple years ago they were
32:01talking about that intersection being one of the most accident prone intersections. Okay. In the
32:07country. Even though there's so much traffic lights there. Yeah. Uh it's still actually there
32:12was a story about it. I I recall maybe about two, three years ago. Um when they were talking about
32:18some of the areas that are most accident prone. Yeah. They talked about the uh the the Mova
32:23intersection. You know? Yeah. Well I'll definitely have a conversation with the the Mova police and
32:29also the transit police so that we can get more guardianship um at that junction um in order to
32:35address some of these issues. You know what we are asking our motoring public to be much more
32:41responsible uh much more civic minded uh you know it it shouldn't be that in the absence of law
32:50enforcement that we carry ourselves a particular way. That we behave in a particular way. So that
32:59you only need uh or you you must always have police officers present in order to behave
33:06how you're supposed to behave. Now that is that is unacceptable. But if that is what it takes um
33:12then we will have to we'll have to treat with it from that perspective. Most certainly. Alright
33:16we're going to take a short break and we'll be back after this. Stay with us.

35:53So
36:02so
36:22welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan, joined today by ASP
36:27Ishmael Pitt from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and I think we have a caller,
36:31on the line, caller. Good evening.
37:32On the other side of you, Mr. Pitt, I would like to ask you, is there a way in which you can,
37:38the CCTV cameras, can pick up these offenses, or some of these offenses, and not all,
37:44and charge these drivers by a way of someone's plea, because it's a serious accident waiting
37:49to happen to those mobile drivers right there, as you already said. Thank you very much. Okay,
37:56thanks much, ma'am, and you have added to the concerns regarding the MOVA junction,
38:02and for that reason, I will, as I pledged before, pass on the information.
38:07Concerning whether the CCTV camera can assist in the bringing to account persons who are
38:15responsible for this type of behavior, yes, yes, it is something that we can include in our
38:22investigative approach. So, in having this discussion, I will also make that recommendation,
38:30so that we can have some relief for the motoring public, the pedestrians, you know, generally
38:35persons who are affected. So, thanks very much for your contribution. All right, we have another
38:40call on the line, caller. Good evening. Yeah, good evening. I just wanted to make a little
38:44contribution here. Good evening, sir. Good evening, sir. Yes, I'm noticing about stepping
38:52off the sidewalk and in front of a car and so on. That is part of our culture. Do you remember
38:57Jew, the cartoonist who used to have cartoons in evening news? I do. Jew, it's a cartoonist.
39:04He had a very nice one. That was about 30 or 40 years ago, yeah? Okay. He had a mother bird
39:10and a little bird by her grave, sir. And the mother bird was telling the little bird, your
39:14father was a true, true trainee, yes? He was a true, true trainee. He watched a big jumbo
39:18trip and came back sooner. Hello. And as comical as it might sound, the caller might be right,
39:29you know, some persons, because even in the Protect Yourself skit that we had,
39:36just the behavior of the person who was crossing the roadways, as though she's entitled,
39:43you know, and we are accustomed to seeing this type of behavior. But the behavior is one that
39:49it is not safe, one. It is not something that we should condone. It is not something that we
39:55should continue. So we need to address it in a real way. Mark, you're a journalist. You need
40:02to help stamp out that culture. We are doing it from the lens of prosecuting,
40:06bringing persons before the court, and we know that there might be some
40:11void regarding the specific issue of jaywalking, notwithstanding under the Summary Offenses Act,
40:16there might be a way in order to treat with it. But, you know, it's something that, you know,
40:21we could address. And I'm saying that as a journalist, you can probably bring it to life
40:26in a way that the laws can deal with it more directly. We'll ask people, as one of the things
40:33to do is maybe capture people walking on the streets aimlessly or walking in front of vehicles,
40:39not looking, and we can show that and say, you know, this is how certain pedestrians,
40:45you know, as I start there. But certainly there is that need to look into it in a more deep
40:51sense because of the, as the gentleman pointed out, it's a culture here in Trinidad and Tobago.
40:58And we oftentimes blame the driver of the car. And that's exactly what the first caller was
41:06alluding to, you know, you are getting blamed when really the person who was responsible
41:12has walked away, no pun intended. Yep. Yeah. All right. So I know we have a few minutes before we
41:18take our next break and, you know, with carnival is in the air, of course, and, you know, yes,
41:22we put if you have any pointers for, you know, fed goers, people who are partaking in feds or
41:29just in carnival in general. Yes. Some of the things that you would like to share with them.
41:34Of course. And, you know, with carnival, there comes this big area of vulnerability. There are
41:39so many things that that can go wrong. And, you know, for that reason, we would always want to
41:44empower persons and give persons the necessary advice so that you can make what we would call
41:48wise, sound decisions. So in the first instance, we would ask persons to not accept drinks from
41:55strangers. And we know that persons can add things to your drink that can cause you to
42:02behave a particular way, one, or cause you to not understand your environment and probably render
42:08yourself vulnerable. So I'm saying that as much as we may think that people supposed to know that
42:18there are a lot of persons who might take things for granted. You might go to a party or meet
42:22someone, you interact. The person might appear cordial and friendly. And for that reason,
42:26you let down your guard. The next thing is, can I get you a drink? And the person come to bring
42:31you a drink and you feel free. You have the drink and next minute you end up probably waking up in
42:37a hospital or a strange environment. And it's a very, very serious issue. So don't accept drinks
42:42from strangers. We would also ask that when persons go to fests, you know, you're moving
42:48in groups. Sometimes we have couples and nothing is wrong with that. But moving groups, move with
42:54persons who you trust, get an understanding of the area where the party is taking place,
43:00because you may very well go to a party and it's in an environment that is prone for a particular
43:07type of activity. So for example, if the environment is prone to a person snatching
43:13things and running away, then you need to have that understanding so that when you are going
43:18from the party, probably to your home or you are going towards the party, you know how to probably
43:25carry yourself, project yourself so that you don't fall victim to that. Well, the most common of all
43:32is don't drink and drive. And we know how serious that could be, that it's a matter of life and
43:38death. And we are seeing that if you have to drink, have a designated driver and the designated
43:44driver should not be consuming alcohol. You know, some persons believe I could hold my hand, I could
43:49hold my liquor. You know, it's a common thing. It's evil. It's this, it's that. But you get behind
43:53the wheel, then reality steps in. Your human side steps in. You may be fatigued. You know,
44:00you probably had an entire day before you went to the party and so much things could go wrong
44:04that can cause persons their life. And what we are saying as well is that even though you are not
44:09drinking, you need to watch your alcohol intake. Yeah. Right. I hope those tips were helpful for
44:16all those carnival goers of FETS, et cetera, and all those who enjoy and revel in carnival.
44:21We're going to take a short break and we'll be back. Stay with us.

46:24Yeah.
46:46Welcome back to beyond the tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan joined today by acting ESP Ishmael
46:50Pitt from the Trinidad and Tobago police service. And I know that earlier on, we had a caller that
46:56speaking a little bit of a code, but I think you cracked that code. And I think you want to tell
47:01that caller, give a response to that caller. So that does regard indeed a $45,000 check,
47:07you know, and, um, the caller was, uh, he was a victim of something and, um,
47:14he actually called in on this program in order to get some assistance. Um, I know that some
47:19officers, they were helping him. Um, so I would have to find out from him exactly, um, where that
47:26may have reached the fact that he called in means to say that probably it, it hasn't reached any
47:30conclusion. All right. So I, unfortunately I do have his number, so I'm going to give him a call.
47:36So call if you are, if you are listening, um, I will contact you, um, in order to, um, have the
47:41matter, um, for the address. And I know usually, you know, white collar crime and so on. It's a,
47:47it's a lengthy procedure. In some cases, you know, you have to go to the bank or whatever.
47:52You have to secure the records. You have to get things through electronic means and so on. You
47:59have to go to a judge, apply for certain paperwork and so on. So sometimes it can be quite challenging
48:04in some cases, um, you know, depending on the quantity of money or whatever it might be, or how
48:10the transaction was carried out that, um, it might take officers a longer period of time to secure
48:17the evidence. Yeah, you are absolutely correct. And you know, fraud investigation is a very tedious,
48:23lengthy type of process. And it means crossing your T's and dotting your I's in order to bring
48:28it to some conclusion. And there are so many different, um, aspects of it in terms of having
48:35to go to this agency, that agency, you know, that they get things right in order to get the necessary
48:39information. Um, you know, so we, we heal our fraud squad investigators today because, um,
48:44the fraud squad department, it's, it's not with an abundance of resources and they have been able
48:49to provide so much for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. So, um, hats off to them. We know it's a,
48:55it's, it's not a done deal. There are many times they come in for, um, condemnation because, um,
49:00the fact that the investigation takes so much time, but I'm glad that you are able now to
49:05identify the members of the public from a, a non-policing standpoint that you understand that
49:11it takes a lot of time. And the reason why I say that too, I mean, uh, Inspector Thomas was on this
49:16show. Yes. From the fraud squad a couple weeks ago. Yeah. And I, I, I remember many years ago,
49:23I was the victim of a skimmer. Right. And they skimmed, uh, you know, I was not even in the
49:28locations. I was actually out on a vessel for Christmas function. And it took me the better
49:35part of a year before I actually got back those funds to prove that I did not withdraw the money
49:40over a period of time and sit in ATMs in downtown Port of Spain or swipe my card at, um, you know,
49:46Trader Jack's in the movie town or at, uh, at, at malls and so on across, uh, the Port of Spain
49:53district. And I had to go and sit and look at footage to see that I did not see myself in the
49:58footage at Royal Bank and other, other locations just to ensure, you know, I'm not trying to
50:04pinpoint anybody. I had to actually go there because it was another bank that the money was
50:09drawn out of not my bank. Yes. Using my card and another banking institution. And it was really long
50:16and tedious, you know, having to go through all this, uh, you know, and have to confirm it wasn't
50:21you that took the money. Yeah. Yeah. It is lengthy. It is tedious. And I'm glad that you mentioned that
50:27as well, in terms of the card and the skimming, you know, that is something that we would ask
50:31members of the public to be very careful about. We are seeing much more cashless transactions
50:37taking place. And for good reason, it makes sense. You know, you walk around with less money and make
50:41yourself, um, less of a target, so to speak, but even in that domain, we need to be careful because
50:46there's so much of technology outside there and it's not always used for positive things. Yeah.
50:53You know that that's why a lot of these, um, you know, they have the SSID wallets and so on now, because
50:58there are devices where you can actually pass and pick up the information on somebody's card
51:05if it's not protected. Of course. Of course. You know, and, you know, criminals, even though we'll say,
51:10no, that that's in North America, but it reaches here very quickly too. Well, we are on a global
51:16stage, you know, and, um, everything that happens in the developer world, it happens here. We have
51:22persons here who would travel and they travel frequently and they would bring back that culture
51:26where they would bring back whatever experience they had, they would bring back good things,
51:29they would bring back bad things, so we can't, um, confine ourselves to say that we are within a,
51:37or we are on an island and we are limited and, you know, to the extent that we have only a small
51:45culture. Now our culture has expanded to include North America, Europe, India, Africa, and there's
51:51so much of different things that we need to take into consideration. All right, we're gonna leave
51:56it on that note. Remember, we run tonight at 11 theater, another repeat tomorrow at 11 o'clock.
52:03Stay tuned for more on the commissioner's questioning at the TV6 news, which is up next.
52:08See you tomorrow.
