03:28I want to know from the public, do you think we have a soft spot for criminals in this country?
03:33Like honestly think of it. Do we have a special place in our hearts when they commit a crime that we should say,
03:40listen, we should show some empathy or sympathy for the criminal elements
03:46because it seems like the laws of the land is a place or comfort for some of the criminals out there
03:54and it is almost giving like we have that a huge heart for them when it comes to them committing crimes
04:03and not so much the victims. Is that really the case? Of course, it is Thursday.
04:07So this evening we have acting ASP Pitt with us from the Northern North Division and we would like to welcome you.
04:14How are you today? Not too bad. Good evening, Whitney. Good evening.
04:17Do you have a soft spot for the criminal elements because they are still human beings?
04:23Well, they are human beings and for that reason and I will put that into context by saying a criminal could be someone's father,
04:32could be someone's mother, could be someone's child. In other words, they come from the society.
04:39They are part of us and one person might look at criminals from a perspective of wanting to totally eradicate
04:50and use all the measures you can in order to get rid of criminals.
04:54And from another perspective, some persons may look at reform. How do we reform the individual?
04:59There would be other perspectives in terms of what has contributed to this individual behaving how they are behaving,
05:06their level of deviance regarding what are social norms, what are acceptable and what are not acceptable.
05:12So to answer your question, it is totally dependent usually on the scenarios and there are laws as you have quite rightfully outlined
05:25that we must abide by to ensure that everyone regardless of their circumstance, they are protected as far as the laws of Trinidad and Tobago are concerned.
05:35Do we show any sort of empathy or sympathy for the victims because sometimes I am sure the victims feel like they are neglected many times
05:45when a crime is committed and the focus is always on the criminal because they have rights and they may have the opportunity to prove that they,
05:54yes, they were not guilty in a said crime which is something that I am happy that we have in Trinidad and Tobago.
06:00But it almost seems like we completely forget the feelings and the traumatic experience victims may go through.
06:08Yes, and understandably victims, families of victims, the wider society would want to see justice and would want to see justice come in a quick, quick, quick manner.
06:22And once that is delayed, you find that persons now look at the persons who have committed those offenses as having received a softer touch
06:32because you observe them walking on the streets, you observe them interacting, living their lives and they have done something, they have wronged someone.
06:41So it appears at times as though the law is more or less for those persons when you look at all the safety nets,
06:48all the parameters that you must function within to ensure that they have their rights preserved.
06:55So the observation, the concerns, it is not only for those outside of law enforcement because within law enforcement as police officers we are human beings as well
07:07and we feel the pulse of the society when that is concerned.
07:10Yes, it is just a weird feeling to have. But this time let's take a look at today's headlines.
07:40We are a very angry society as we continue to see more of not just criminal activities happening,
08:10throughout the country but persons releasing their anger and frustration on others and I know this is a month for men's mental health
08:21and many times, I am sure many people didn't even know that we are celebrating now this month here or if they even care.
08:29But it is something that clearly we need to pay more attention to and make the people aware and educate the public more on it
08:38because we are seeing more and more the persons who are committing crime and we are speaking specifically in Trinidad and Tobago.
08:43I know sometimes we love to use examples outside but they are the men that we are seeing doing a lot of the criminal activities in the country.
08:51Not making excuses again for the criminal elements but it started somewhere.
08:56Of course.
08:57So I mean we have a lot to discuss. At this time I want you all to take a look at this year three arrested, drug seized and a stolen vehicle recovered.
09:07Now officers attached to the Port of Spain Division arrested three suspects and seized a quantity of marijuana during an anti-crime exercise yesterday.
09:17Now around 3.30am a party of officers of the Port of Spain Investigation Operations Unit and Gang Intelligence Unit based in the information received
09:27proceeded to the entrance of the Queen's Park Savannah where they arrested a suspect, armed involvement in robberies and lastly from that person.
09:36Now during the street check exercise in Port of Spain officers stopped and searched an orange Kia Rio and conducted a search.
09:44The officers found 62 grams of marijuana in the front pocket of the front seat passenger and 431 grams of marijuana were found in the vehicle.
09:55Both the driver and the passenger were arrested and expected to be charged for possession of marijuana.
10:04So the officers were definitely busy even though the holiday was yesterday.
10:07Work still continues out there. Crime doesn't stop as they say.
10:11Now caught on camera somewhere in Trinidad and Tobago. I want you all to take a look at what transpired here.
10:17Again it was into a really angry society.
10:20We often speak of conflict management and the way we deal with conflict.
10:29And clearly the common area to resort is that of violence.
10:36And not content to tend.
10:38Yes, yes, yes, yes. And that is of increasing concern to us.
10:43You know we have started a drive regarding how we are able to impact our youths.
10:50But we have a lot of adults in our society who also need to be part of those type of interventions so that they know exactly how to deal with conflict.
11:01Yes, and many of us don't know how to because I am also guilty of that with road rage.
11:06I tend to scream a lot in the car and I have to count and let it go and say Jesus just take the wheel, calm me down.
11:14Because you know in a split second your whole life could change.
11:16Of course, of course.
11:17And you could change the life of someone else as well.
11:19Of course.
11:20Now we mentioned also that we saw a lot of road traffic accidents taking place throughout the country and it is seeming to increase more so.
11:30Now RT, the corner of Park and Henry Street in Port of Spain, I want you to look at what took place here.
11:38Yes, and again we often speak of our observation of the rules, the regulations of our roadways so that persons would drive, they would drive responsibly.
11:51They would ensure that their vehicles are road worthy.
11:54And at times we are condemned as police officers for having our operations to ensure that persons comply and abide by the road regulations.
12:05And it is for the reason again the most important is that of safety.
12:09We need to ensure that our vehicles are functioning well.
12:12We need to ensure that our motoring public is observing the rules.
12:17Because just like how we often say see something, say something.
12:23The other mantra of the TTPS is that road safety is everybody's business.
12:27Everybody's business.
12:30The person who is even standing on the pavement need to be concerned as to road safety and need to understand that he or she also have a part to play regarding road safety.
12:39Because if a car is to run on the road, he or she can also be impacted or property can be impacted.
12:46The persons who sit in the vehicles idly by and just allow drivers to break traffic lights and disregard the rules, the laws and all these things.
12:57And you know when something happens you want to support the driver because there is a sense of allegiance.
13:02You know those persons are also contributing.
13:05So from that perspective and the fact that we can all be impacted in some way or the other.
13:10We need to understand that road safety is everybody's business.
13:13We need to step up and we need to say something.
13:15We are losing too many lines.

45:27situations yes officers may be may be deployed but usually it's a case of
45:34persons performing an extra duty which is catered for based on our financial
45:40regulations I guess so the vehicles why then using vehicles to transport what
45:45because that could be used for other things I guess that's what you see
45:49resources apart from yes outside of your duty but I still have to use a police
45:52vehicle which could be used for patrol in a certain area well away from what
45:57they're supposed to do no well I'm confident that the persons who make
46:02those decisions on the senior officers who make those decisions would take all
46:06those things into consideration regarding the amount of police because
46:09that they would provide for that particular type of duty so that it does
46:13not interfere with operational continuity regarding the regular demands
