00:00I'm really happy right now to be joined by our next guest we talk a lot about these things he
00:05always has phenomenal information so I'm really excited to have him join us today and tell you
00:13guys about it let me give you a little bit of information about his background he is the owner
00:17of Borgman Rehab Solutions he was a physical therapist 12 years on the NFL sideline for both
00:24the Chiefs and the Eagles he is a perfect person to talk about some of the health questions right
00:28now around the Kansas City Chiefs we welcome Aaron Borgman onto the show Aaron how you doing my man
00:35great CDOT thanks for having me on this afternoon I appreciate you reaching out absolutely man let's
00:39start with this we got the information yesterday about Rasheed Rice's surgery can you explain that
00:45surgery to us well everything that's out there publicly says it's a quote-unquote cleanup you
00:53know that can only really mean a couple of different things either there's some scar tissue
00:58potentially some loose bodies maybe it might be a small meniscus trim or a meniscectomy
01:03you know the given the timelines and giving the words that are being used out there it's
01:09you know we would say generally it's on the minor side of things and on the lesser side of things
01:13for
01:13sure that being said we really don't know other than what the previous timeline was stated so we can
01:19it can only be a handful of things in that realm to be honest with you so Adam Schefter said
01:24that the
01:24timeline is around two months which would indicate what you're saying is this isn't a serious surgery
01:31yeah and I think you know that combined with the fact that the time of year uh you know based
01:37upon
01:38you know there's a lot of these things that happen guys come back from offseason uh you know they start
01:43feeling something during you know new workouts and it gets investigated and then teams are usually
01:48proactive you know take this player out of it but teams are proactive now so it doesn't either
01:53prolong later into the summer and get worse so they can take care of it now and then they're ready
01:57for training camp kind of deal typically have you ever heard of a player who is going to do part
02:03of
02:03his rehab in jail in your time in the National Football League uh I can't say that I have that's
02:10a one of
02:10one I've had I've been around players who unfortunately for one reason or another have had legal issues
02:15that they've had to be away from the team or suspensions uh but not uh devoid or lacking of
02:23professional medical care either by a team or someone they seek out um this seems to be a pretty
02:29unique situation it's uh yeah like I said I think it's one of one what's the biggest challenge that
02:35Rasheed Rice is going to face over these next 30 days from a physical perspective as he's in jail and
02:41doesn't have access to those things that you just mentioned yeah so anytime you have post-surgical
02:47you know rehabilitation your main goals are swelling control getting your range of motion back getting
02:53your musculature firing uh the way that you want it to so you can you know return to function as
02:59quickly as possible uh that being said I mean I'm sure listen I think we all know the Kansas City
03:06Chiefs of Medical Staff is well regarded I think they probably communicated with him on some things that
03:10you could potentially do uh I don't know what type of facilities this person's going to have I don't
03:15know uh what kind of access to actual medical care he's going to have is he going to be able
03:20to uh you
03:21know wear compressive devices to assist the swelling all of these are questions that as soon as you know
03:26I heard the news that I had in my brain like what could possibly be done on any type of
03:32level or what
03:33will even be allowed um we simply just don't ask those answers so literally anything's a possibility I think
03:39right now we're talking to Aaron Borgman he is the owner of Borgman Rehab Solutions he also has spent
03:4412 years on an NFL sideline with both the Chiefs and the Eagles Aaron how big of a deal is
03:51this is this
03:52something minor the fact that he is in jail and dealing with this because just the surgery as you
03:57alluded to makes it a minor thing this is not some catastrophic knee injury we're talking about but
04:04the fact that he's not going to have access to those things that you are alluding to how big of
04:08a deal of
04:09that how much does that play into his recovery and being ready for the season well listen let's let's
04:16take this particular player out of it and say anybody that is in this situation where you're a professional
04:22athlete and you've had a procedure but you are you know being restricted one way or another from the care
04:28that you need to do your job obviously it's going to affect in some fashion right um does that put
04:35this
04:36player behind I don't know does he find a way to uh you know do basic things uh during whatever
04:44kind
04:44of uh you know recreation time he's allowed I I really have no great way of answering that uh you
04:51have to think that it delays the recovery to some extent but again then you go back to the procedure
04:58performed and what was it exactly what kind of uh expectations were there were immediately after
05:06the procedure was going to be performed based upon what he was going to need there's like 18 different
05:12variables we're talking about here and you know I think to try to project that and know the answers
05:17to that is almost impossible I'd have to say that it's delayed to some extent now as far as an
05:24exact
05:24timeline on that there's just man that's it's going to be a fascinating case study to follow
05:28right now we're talking to Aaron Borgman we talked about Rasheed Rice let's now move to Patrick Mahomes
05:33Aaron I'm sure you've seen the video I'm also sure you've heard Dr. Chow and his thoughts his
05:39assessment of what he saw on the video what did you make of the Mahomes video yeah uh I was
05:46actually
05:46uh asked in an interview earlier this week about the same uh video uh listen um I think it's great
05:53Patrick's doing as well as he's doing I think it's phenomenal that he's able to go out there and
05:58swing a golf club was freely as he looked um I want to be very clear that there's no correlation
06:04between swinging a golf club on video and playing football obviously there's nothing that we can glean
06:09from that other than you know that's kind of the normal timeline for anybody in an ACL to be able
06:16to do
06:16such things at this level now he obviously had additional damage as well with his LCL so that's a
06:22component of it um I think he looked great um you know he's I know his rehab team very well
06:27they're phenomenal I think that you know he's working very hard from what I hear and all the
06:32reports I think that he's going to be setting himself up for the best chance of success possible
06:38I think you know somebody asked me my opinion is that he's going to do everything he can to be
06:44out
06:44there week one I believe he'll be out there week one what version of him we see is yet to
06:48be
06:48determined and uh I'd hate to speculate on this player we've seen him do pretty unbelievable things
06:54before because of the way that he works to get back from injury um you know I'm excited to watch
07:01again just a fascinating case study I'm excited to watch it uh I'll just remind everybody that at no
07:07previous time in history in the NFL have quarterbacks ever been more protected uh by rules and by uh how
07:15they
07:15are allowed to be contacted so I think that plays a role in his return to play um you know
07:20just a
07:21fascinating case study right now we're talking to Aaron Borgman here for a couple more minutes talking
07:25about Patrick Mahomes the term ahead of schedule continues to be thrown out there as someone who
07:32is in this field what does ahead of schedule mean to you when you hear it so you know we
07:38people such as
07:39ourselves we always either make either bets with ourselves about how we quickly we can get somebody
07:44back and whether we're wrong or right and you know you got to have a little bit of you know
07:49a little
07:49bit of ego a little bit of chip on your shoulder to work in that business and so you know
07:53ahead of
07:54schedule can mean a lot of different things like where do you project somebody to be well if they
07:59projected this player to play week one then you know you're kind of right on schedule if it's me or
08:04you
08:04out there having uh you know this surgery we're probably ahead of schedule so uh you know honestly
08:09I tell people all the time you're ready when you are ready as opposed to like saying well you we
08:14have
08:14to have you back by six months right now he looks like he's doing really well uh it seems like
08:18we're
08:19going to find out more information as OTAs come about ahead of schedule to me means that uh you know
08:25his muscles are doing what they're supposed to do and reacting the way they're supposed to he's able to
08:31clearly he's able to pivot we've seen this player release video of him throwing uh I would imagine
08:37uh you know he's doing all appropriate activities for this stage of the rehabilitation this kind of
08:43return to function stage as I call it I think that um you know putting definitive timelines is tough but
08:51when you have one and such as this situation where they accelerated the uh doctor's visit they
08:58accelerated the surgery so you know that by definition is already ahead of scheduled and
09:03according to most people so you know uh I think he's doing great that's the take-home message
09:07I'll get you out of here with this last question you mentioned it you sound optimistic that Patrick
09:12would be able to play in week one as somebody who has been in these situations and teams have asked
09:17your opinion on these things what do you need to see what do you want to see before you feel
09:24comfortable to give the thumbs up to allow a player to go out there and play coming off of this
09:28injury
09:29yeah so this is my blanket criteria for any injury uh one the player has to be able to defend
09:35themselves right you have to be able to take care of yourselves you have to not put yourself in harm's
09:41way you have to do the thing that you're trying to get back to you have to be able to
09:45um look like
09:47you're playing the sport appropriately you have to uh be uh you know ready to do anything that the
09:53sport and the position asks so that's number one b or two excuse me the player has to feel like
10:00he's
10:00okay right the player has to have confidence in that kind of stuff the player has to say yeah I'm
10:05good
10:05I feel good I can do this my I don't have any hesitation with xyz thing that's being asked of
10:11them
10:12three the team has to feel that he's good right the coaching staff the medical staff and so you know
10:19any one of those things that's a no-go calls off the whole system all three of those big major
10:25points
10:26to me have to be a yes the player has to do it the metrics the testing has to be
10:31good and the team has
10:33to feel like he's good if any one of those is off then the whole thing's off right everybody's got
10:38to
10:38be rowing in the same direction there and so uh return to play is a tricky situation and you got
10:43to
10:43make sure all of those things are hit correctly and sometimes they beat schedules sometimes they don't beat
10:49schedules sometimes they're right on time and so I think that's a better way to go about it as opposed
10:53to time frames because these guys are freaks they have access to stuff that you and I don't
10:58right they they have unbelievable teams around them and so sometimes we see some pretty impressive
11:03things so I'm excited to watch how it all plays out that is my guy Aaron Borgman joining us on
11:08the
11:08show today with the latest on Rasheed Rice and also Patrick Mahomes Aaron great stuff man we'll catch up
11:14with you down the line as we get more information about Patrick as we get closer to week one man
11:18appreciate your time yeah thanks for having me see that appreciate you absolutely that's Aaron
11:21Borgman joining us on the show shout out to him at rehab all star if you want to follow him
