00:00But also a lot of stuff we've been doing on the text line today, taking the best bars in America.
00:04If you've got your best bars in America, feel free to weigh in with those on the text line.
00:09But, Jay, I know this is something that is near and dear to your heart, and it's really becoming now
00:14near and dear to my heart.
00:15And that's protecting the fans of the Kansas City Chiefs and really protecting the home fans of the NFL.
00:22And yesterday we saw the league expand its international games from 8 to 9, I think it was, or 10.
00:28And I think they're going to 9 now, I think.
00:319, and then eventually they'll go to 10, and eventually to 16.
00:34And that's not, for me, the big deal.
00:38I don't care about the international games.
00:40This is the way the league is going to make money, and I'm all for it, man.
00:42Go out there and make as much money as you can.
00:45But what I am against is now what they're doing.
00:47Because when these international games first started, one of my biggest complaints was we're taking a home game away from,
00:55not the fans per se, but all the vendors.
00:57And people that work at the stadium, they count on those eight dates a year for their income.
01:01You take that day away, that's a day of income that you're taking away from a lot of people who
01:05rely on that, right?
01:06Especially around the holidays.
01:07A lot of second jobs for people going to that stadium and working and trying to make ends meet.
01:12They employ thousands of people at these stadiums on game day.
01:15So I was always upset from that standpoint.
01:17Then they added the ninth game, and so people were still getting the eighth game.
01:20And a lot of times it was the ninth game that made me be played overseas, whatnot.
01:24And it was never really a great game that was over there, Jags taking on Cleveland and, you know, whatever,
01:29right?
01:30But now what the NFL is doing, where I think this is a dangerous slope, is that now the league
01:35has told the teams they're no longer allowed to protect home games from being moved internationally.
01:41Each year, teams were allowed to protect a couple of home games and say, you're not moving these games.
01:46We want these games at our stadium.
01:48Chiefs Broncos can't move it.
01:50Right, exactly.
01:51Whatever those big marquee games are that we've seen here.
01:53Imagine Cincinnati and the Chiefs being played in London or Buffalo, Kansas City being played in Spain.
02:01We're going to take now and have the opportunity to, I should say, the ability to take the biggest games
02:09away from our home fans and move them overseas.
02:13And that's where I think, Jay, that you start losing your fan base, especially the ones that are paying the
02:20freight on these tickets and all the season ticket holders.
02:23Hey, the Chiefs have nine home games this year.
02:25Look at all these great matchups.
02:26Oh, I'm sorry, that Cincinnati game is now going to be played in Germany and it's going to be taken
02:30off your home slate.
02:32And now you're punishing the fans in the United States that are the grassroots of what this league is all
02:39about.
02:40And if you start pulling these marquee games away from these fans and putting them in Europe, fans are going
02:46to be pissed because as fun as Arrowhead is, I got to be honest with you guys.
02:50I don't want to go watch them play the Jets, the Raiders and the Cardinals when we're watching them play
02:57the Bengals overseas.
02:58And that could have been a game here in Kansas City.
03:01And so that's where I get frustrated with.
03:04And this is where I look at it, Jay, and say, this is the move that could ultimately be the
03:09beginning of the end for the NFL.
03:11You're now taking and allowing the best games on home schedules to be moved overseas and taken away from the
03:18fan base that pays the freight.
03:20And I think that's a bad thing.
03:21It's like college or pro teams when you get that big time matchup, unless you're like the Red River rivalry
03:27or something like that with Texas, Oklahoma, because you can actually play it in a neutral location.
03:31But instead of just the Jags playing somebody overseas, because a lot of these games aren't good matchups, like the
03:36Jags versus the Browns or something like that.
03:38But like this year, you're seeing the Lions and the Patriots square off.
03:42So the Lions, you know, a perennial team that's trying to make their way to a title, a team that
03:45was just in the Super Bowl in the Patriots.
03:48You're seeing teams like Dallas in the Ravens playing in Rio, which last year you saw the Chiefs and the
03:53Chargers.
03:53A lot of people with high expectations for the Chargers and, of course, the Chiefs.
03:56But you're seeing some premium matchup.
03:58Melbourne, Australia has the 49ers and Rams this year.
04:02So you're seeing more premium matchups being moved.
04:04So to think, oh, they're not going to move Kansas City and Buffalo.
04:08They're doing it more.
04:09Is that a Rams home game, by the way, that they're moving down there to Australia?
04:12I think it is, right?
04:13Because if it's a Rams home game, they're giving up that home game to keep the Niner fans out.
04:17The Niners have, too, because they're going to Mexico City as well.
04:19They're like, hey, man, we're playing two international games now.
04:22So that's where the Niners keeps them away from the power station, I guess, for a little bit.
04:26So that's good.
04:27But they're moving the premium games over because you can sell these to your streamers when it's not the Jags
04:32versus the Browns.
04:33Right.
04:33Absolutely.
04:34And you're getting a marquee matchup with the Chiefs and the Bills being played overseas.
04:37You would like to think that would be in Buffalo or in Kansas City.
04:40Right.
04:41But it's not the way the NFL is anymore.
04:43This game could end up in Munich.
04:44Now they're playing in Paris this year.
04:45Paris for the Steelers and the Saints.
04:48Right.
04:48Which I think is a great matchup for Paris.
04:50I think it's awesome that the Saints are going over there.
04:52Because usually we send crap and they still go.
04:54Right.
04:54Exactly.
04:54And fans will still go over there.
04:56But you mentioned the streamers and creating this package for the streamers.
05:00We have got to start living in a world in the NFL where not every game is a marquee game.
05:05And it's okay to have noon games on Sunday.
05:09It's okay to have noon games all year long.
05:12We don't have to start farming off those noon games because every game that you farm off to a streamer
05:18is truly one less game now that is on that free television platform for NFL fans to enjoy.
05:26And they will tell you and they are right that even if it's on a streamer in your local market,
05:31you still get all your games.
05:32But if you don't have the streaming services and you're out of a local market, now you're just you're shut
05:38out basically from these games.
05:40And if they're going to be big games on these streamers, that's not cool.
05:44That's just not the way to do it because you're taking away the home game here in the United States,
05:50moving it overseas, and then forcing people to have to pay extra to watch it.
05:54If they've already purchased season tickets to that team, that's having their game removed.
05:57And now it could be a marquee game.
05:59Imagine losing the division by one game because you had to play the Buffalo Bills over there and you didn't
06:04have home field advantage.
06:05That set the Chiefs off playing in Brazil.
06:07It did.
06:07It did.
06:08They never got over it.
06:10Now that's on them from a mental standpoint.
06:12You've got to find a way to get over that kind of stuff.
06:14It's true.
06:14But the bottom line is anything the NFL touches has always turned to gold.
06:18And they've taken advantage of that.
06:19They've 100% taken advantage.
06:20Even their schedule release has become an animal in itself.
06:23They used to not be that way, but it is now.
06:25Yes.
06:25Where you refresh constantly who you're playing and when you're playing them.
06:29I finally saw one crack this year to the NFL.
06:32And I haven't seen it.
06:33The Pro Bowl.
06:34Okay.
06:34Because the Pro Bowl was played in that basement.
06:36You know, out.
06:37Oh, yeah.
06:38What was that?
06:38Where was that played?
06:39You couldn't even find the tug of war on and stuff.
06:41Little things that were actually the dodgeball.
06:43I mean, it's stupid.
06:44The Pro Bowl games now.
06:45But the ratings were actually worse than the WNBA All-Star game and the All-Star game.
06:50And the NFL never loses.
06:51Wow.
06:51But they lost in the Pro Bowl.
06:52So, sometimes when you expand too much, like if you have a good thing, you keep making
06:57it a good thing.
06:58That was the one crack to the NFL where they finally lost.
07:01Yeah.
07:02And they usually don't lie.
07:02Because it doesn't matter if you're playing flag football or whatever.
07:04It's the NFL.
07:05People are going to consume it.
07:06But you finally saw it there.
07:08And the more that you do the streaming and stuff like that, you start taking advantage
07:12of fans too much.
07:13It works now.
07:14Everything they do touches the gold.
07:15But eventually, you do too many things and you start to wean people off.
07:20And that's the only dangerous when you're trying to expand.
07:24Listen, we've seen it all the time with restaurants.
07:26You know, they catch the craze and they start expanding like crazy.
07:29And they expanded too fast.
07:31And all of a sudden, they start selling off those places and get more to a manageable
07:34state.
07:34But they took advantage of it when it was.
07:37But they had to scale back.
07:38And we see it all the time in business.
07:40The NFL hasn't really had to deal with that.
07:42Not saying they won't.
07:43This is different times.
07:44People are careful with where they put their dollars going forward.
07:48But the more you take them here and the more you make the games more difficult to find
07:51on this streaming service or that streaming service.
07:53And whether your team's not playing the home games, which everybody loses out from parking
07:57tenants to law enforcement to anybody else that works home games.
08:01This is a big deal.
08:02This is why colleges, when they put their schedule out in their home games, they're real particular
08:06in what they do because it builds up the economy of the local market that you're dealing with.
08:11Same thing happens in the NFL with so many people relying on it.
08:13But you start spreading a good thing.
08:15And right now, it doesn't matter what you're doing because you're the NFL.
08:18But I started to see a little bit of a crack with the Pro Bowl.
08:20They're going to probably get...
08:22Listen, they've watered it down.
08:24They went from actual football to it wasn't good football to flag football to whatever.
08:30But the ratings were absolutely terrible.
08:31They're kind of poo-pooing it now.
08:33We have Shadu or Sanders in the Pro Bowl.
08:34Let's get to the point now where, honestly, I can see it within the next two or three years
08:38being completely emptied out.
08:40You're there entitled only by making it there.
08:43But you finally hit a wall and you have to realize it.
08:46How far can we take advantage of this customer?
08:48How far can we push them?
08:50Because right now, they're pushing them.
08:51They're pushing NFL fans with their dollars, with the streaming services.
08:55But eventually, when do we push them too far?
08:58When do we expand too far?
08:59Because it can't happen.
09:00Now, the NFL, everything...
09:01Again, everything they do touches is gold.
09:04But there is a limit to what humans will do.
09:07Yeah, I think when they finally do expand this thing to 10, which I think will be next year,
09:12and they're starting to unprotect these home games,
09:14and the fans actually see these good games coming off their schedule...
09:19Like, if you can't protect the Bills and the Chiefs in Kansas City...
09:22Right.
09:23And what can you protect?
09:24Yeah, exactly.
09:25What can you protect in this league?
09:26And the other thing that I'll lean on a little bit, too, is, you know, right now,
09:31it's cool every once in a while to have that 8.30 game on Sunday morning from Europe.
09:35If it becomes something that you have every week, it will lose its coolness.
09:40It will lose that sparkle.
09:42It will lose that, hey, I've got to watch this because it's something different and unique.
09:46It becomes a normal baseball game on a Tuesday afternoon in May that you feel like,
09:51you know what, I really don't need to see this.
09:52And so I think by the NFL doing this and expanding this and creating more windows
09:57and creating more inventory, they're actually watering down the product
10:01where you'll look at it and go, eh, I'm not interested in it.
10:03And they know that.
10:04That's why now they're taking these bigger games.
10:07And you know the Chiefs are going to get effed.
10:09Right, Jay?
10:10Like, you know next year, we are going to lose probably a good home game overseas
10:16because the NFL realizes if they want to sell this international streaming service,
10:21they're going to have to have a good Chiefs game on there.
10:24And so when you look ahead to the schedule next year
10:27and some of the people that they could have on the schedule next year,
10:30I just hope it's not one of those things where we're looking at, you know,
10:33the Bronco game being moved overseas.
10:36Well, people spoke, 1.9 million people, record low for the NFL Pro Bowl this year.
10:411.9.
10:41That is low.
10:42The WNBA All-Star Game drew 2.2 million viewers.
10:46You are now, you have lost an event to the WNBA.
10:50Again, it's the All-Star Game, but it didn't matter.
10:52The Pro Bowl, it always outdrew that.
10:54But when you start losing things to that, then you need to look in the mirror and say,
10:58eh, maybe we're pushing these people a little bit too far when you're losing to the WNBA
11:02in an All-Star Game.
11:03Again, Pro Bowl sucks, I get it, but it didn't matter.
11:06They would still win.
11:07Right.
11:07BBL, stinky.
11:08Yeah, it's true.
11:09I mean, they always won.
11:11It didn't matter what they did.
11:12The league is always, you know, looking at it and saying, we're winning.
11:16It doesn't matter.
11:17We can put anything that we want to put out there on this field,
11:20and people will show up, and people will be a part of it.
11:23You look at what this Chiefs team has next year when it comes to home games.
11:27Denver, L.A., Las Vegas.
11:28You have Cleveland, you have Pittsburgh, you have Green Bay, you have Minnesota,
11:31you have an AFC East team based on finish, and you have an NFC East team based on finish
11:38at Arrowhead Stadium.
11:39I'm looking at those games next year.
11:41What if they move the Steelers game overseas, and it's Kansas City against Pittsburgh instead
11:46of at Arrowhead Stadium, Jay, it's in Moan.
11:49Or what if they take that Vikings game or Packer game and take those out of Arrowhead Stadium
11:55and move them overseas?
11:57Those are big cross-division rivals or cross-conference rivals, and I want those games here.
12:02Or what if you're the Kansas City Chiefs and you're getting ready to go on the road to take
12:05on Detroit next year, and that game gets moved overseas?
12:08Well, how do you feel as a season ticket holder, Bob, that you have the bye week and then the
12:13Chargers at home?
12:14Yeah.
12:14That's Sunday, October 18th.
12:16Perfect.
12:16Your only other home games in that stretch are bad ones, the ones you give away to your
12:21neighbors or sell to your neighbors, the Jets and the Cardinals.
12:23Right.
12:24Until December 21st.
12:25You're going from October 18th, you're going right to Halloween, right to Thanksgiving, all
12:31the way until four days before Christmas with the Cardinals and the Jets at home at Arrowhead
12:37Stadium, one of the great places in the NFL to watch a game.
12:40And you're getting nothing between October 18th and December 21st, but the Jets and the
12:45team probably picking first in the draft, the Cardinals.
12:47That's it.
12:48That's it.
12:48That's your home schedule.
12:49Right.
12:49For three months.
12:50Right.
12:50Imagine doing that every year where all the good games are moved out.
12:53I think you're going to have a lot of people get bad.
12:56Yeah.
12:56I think also, too, though, but you're probably going to have a lot of people that are going
12:59to say, I'm out.
13:00And with the move to the new stadium and I'm sure in Buffalo, a lot of people, you know, decided
13:05they're not going to do their tickets because prices are going to go up on that kind of
13:09stuff, but you don't want to anger your customers.
13:12Right.
13:12You don't want to tick your customers off to the point where they're saying, I'm going
13:15to find something else to do, because once you lose a customer, it costs double to try
13:20to win that customer back.
13:21It's it's it's basic economics.
13:23I'm going to send Johnny to baseball camp.
13:25Yeah.
13:26Go, go, go vacation instead.
13:29Go do whatever it is instead of investing that money in the team, because if you're looking
13:33at the tickets and you're going, man, they're taking my good games now and moving them
13:37overseas, it's one thing to move the, you know, the Browns overseas and play that game
13:40over there.
13:40But now I've got this circled game.
13:42I'm excited to see the A, the bills are coming to Arrowhead next year, unless they're not.
13:46And so there's going to be so much fighting with people splitting tickets, getting Denver,
13:50Indianapolis, once you get out of those first two.
13:52Yeah.
13:53Then, I mean, when you're sitting there fighting over jets and Cardinals tickets, I mean,
13:57it sucked.
13:58Yeah.
13:58This home schedule is not the best for the Chiefs.
14:00It's terrible.
14:00It's not the best this year.
14:02And it's only going to get worse now with these international games.
14:05And so that's where I caution the NFL.
14:07You've reached this point, man.
14:09Don't fly too close to the sun because pigs get slaughtered too, right?
14:14That's what they say.
14:15And Mark Cuban's been talking about this for the last couple of years.
14:19The NFL is getting fat on the hog, right?
14:21They're getting fat.
14:22They're getting fat.
14:23Anything we do, they're just going to accept and take.
14:25And then you start messing with people in their games and you take games that they want
14:29to go see and you move them overseas and it's just not going to sit well.
14:32We've seen it with businesses all the time.
14:34Well, Starbucks, they were putting in, what, 5,000 locations a day?
14:37Yeah.
14:37And they scaled back.
14:38I mean, businesses do this all the time.
14:41Oh, man, we've got to get that.
14:42Starbucks is shutting down more places now.
14:43And they start expanding like crazy because you have all these stores opening every day,
14:47every place.
14:48And now everything's coming back.
14:48But I think what the NFL is also looking at too, Jay, is they're starting to realize
14:51the future isn't with these television networks anymore.
14:54That's true.
14:55Not one television network wanted to renegotiate their deal right now.
14:58Why should they want to renegotiate their deal and pay more money for a product that they
15:01already have on right now?
15:02They're kicking three games and going to Amazon with them.
15:04Right.
15:05Yeah.
15:05Non-conference games.
15:06You're seeing this more and more.
15:07Right.
15:07You're going to see it more and more.
15:08Which makes sense.
15:09It's nothing against them that makes sense.
15:10Right.
15:11So what the NFL is trying to do, and I understand this from their business perspective, is they're
15:15trying to give who they perceive to be the new hot chick at the ball, right?
15:19The streamers.
15:20All of the opportunities in the world to do whatever they want.
15:23Whatever you need.
15:24We'll take care of you.
15:25Because they expect them the next time these contracts come up.
15:28We'll give you the Chiefs, which they have done.
15:30Which they have done.
15:31With four streamers.
15:31Right.
15:32And so now they're expecting those streamers based on we scratch your back, you scratch
15:36ours.
15:37Those folks are going to write these major checks.
15:39I don't know if they are.
15:40Amazon has said multiple times, we're not interested in weekly games.
15:44We're interested in events.
15:45We're interested in moments.
15:46And so the NFL is trying to create moments.
15:49Not every game's a moment.
15:50Not every game is meaningful.
15:51Not every game matters.
15:53You got to stop treating like every game matters and trying to farm this off to every
15:57streaming service out there because you're eventually going to lose what matters most.
16:00And that's your diehard fans.
16:01You're having people now pick and choose.
16:03And I get it with more and more games on it.
16:05But you're having people say, well, I'm not going to get Peacock for that one game.
16:08Right.
16:08But now if they're getting multiple, then all of a sudden you say, well, I need that.
16:13But then people are going to be weaned off.
16:14Maybe you have Amazon and that's the only streaming service you want to buy.
16:18And you're not going to get Peacock or Netflix or maybe Netflix is your only one.
16:21Or are you getting them all?
16:23People are making their choices of which ones to get or not.
16:26Like Peacock was something people really didn't mess with because the Chiefs were on it in
16:29the playoffs.
16:29Right.
16:30You got it locally on TV, but you did miss that Chargers-Bills game a few years ago.
16:35It was on Peacock during the regular season, which you're like, okay, whatever, I can miss
16:38a game.
16:39But now when more and more on there, you don't want to miss those.
16:41You don't want to sit around Christmas not having Netflix.
16:44And it's just a bigger cost now to your fans.
16:47So we'll see how this whole thing gets resolved.
16:49We'll see if fans speak with their wallets and how they react to something like this.
