00:04coming up in about 10 minutes we'll get to what danie hughes had to say earlier if you missed it
00:10tonight the royals and mariners start a three-game series in kansas city at 640 josh vernier our royals
00:16insider who also probably loved the day off yesterday gets started at 5 30 tonight the
00:24youngest team in baseball is your st louis cardinals i kid bob um and the oldest team is
00:30the braves so the age gap is about four years 26.7 cardinals youngest team in baseball braves
00:36oldest team baseball at 30.5 the royals land at 29.2 the thing i take away from this is
00:46you can't blame the youth when it comes to production because if your team is older
00:52now michael walk has been great i think seth lugo has been just fine but vinny pasquantino
00:58and salvador perez have been very very below average yeah um and you got to shake some things up uh
01:05vinny hit seventh then got the day off then they had the team day off obviously and then tonight we
01:10will see where the lineup shakes out if that game's at 6 40 that lineup will come out around two
01:16o'clock
01:16i would believe um so i'm interested to see what they do with this lineup because some
01:23uh people last night wanted to see kags play every day the rest of the season no excuses obviously
01:28he'll get a day off when he's played you know 10 or 11 in a row um but maybe move
01:33the youth up
01:33because it was interesting because yesterday i had the topic of it's time to just let the kids hit
01:38third and fourth or whatever you want to do i want to see kags and carter hit together in the
01:42lineup
01:43high up in the lineup and let those veterans move down in-house competition works but it is not the
01:48youth that is is lagging with this team it is the veteran production yeah the veteran production just
01:54is not there right now and the guys that you're counting on are the guys that really aren't
01:58producing at the top of the lineup you know like salvador perez like vinny pasquantino those are two
02:03guys that aren't getting it done and and as far as you know this roster and where it is age
02:07-wise i'm
02:08concerned because next year could be a disaster area for this ball club with the way that this roster
02:12is right now and you guys were talking earlier and i think a good point i think it was mac
02:16that
02:16brought it up or the text line about potentially trading michael waka now and look i think that's
02:21a must i think i i think you're making grave mistakes if you don't look to unload players on
02:26your roster right now because this roster right now is not constructed properly to win at the big
02:30league level and so the pieces that you do have you need to try to get return on investment for
02:36those
02:36pieces and mac i think you said michael waka has another year left on his contract after this year
02:41and that's great because if you trade him now you're not trading a rental and you can conceivably
02:45get more back in return it's like what the tigers were talking about last year with tark skuble should
02:51they have traded him last year at the trade deadline obviously hindsight being 2020 where he is and where
02:56they are in the standing yeah they should have traded tark skuble let's not make that same mistake
03:01here in kansas city yeah with michael waka and and you're in a situation now where he's going to be
03:08a
03:08valuable commodity i believe anyway on the trade market for a contending team having him on your
03:13roster at the end of the season is malpracticed by this organization agree completely that's it's
03:19it's ignoring the problem that is right in front of your face that's right and having the solution
03:24right there next to it and you're ignoring both you you have got to strike why the iron's hot and
03:28michael waka is that iron he's your one iron right you've got to hope someone else cool reagan's
03:32comes back shows something maybe he can heat up his trade market but that's a lot of what the season
03:36is for me those guys who are 27 28 years old and up hey i hope you guys play really
03:41well because
03:41hopefully before that that trade deadline or next year in this offseason whatever you can go sell
03:46high on these guys because that's the way you're going to replenish this team that's the way you're
03:49going to build future and gain youth on this team it's not through assets not through draft picks it's
03:52not through prospects in the system because they don't got them they don't have them right now there's
03:56nobody that's ready or near or close to being part of the big league ball club that's in the minor
04:00leagues again i go back to what cody said the other day it's like slow a is where you've got
04:04your talent
04:05right now well that's a couple of years well it depends on who it is but you know a couple
04:08of
04:08years away most likely before the majority of them even consider getting up to the big league level so
04:13right now i i look at a roster that is aging a roster that is losing a roster that isn't
04:18constructed
04:19very well and guys that are a little bit valuable to other teams more so than they are to you
04:24and if you
04:24have those guys on your team you can't be afforded to sell and and you know what the fans aren't
04:28going
04:29to be mad at you you don't have to hang on because you want to continue to sell the fans
04:32that we got
04:32something going on here fans are already out on this team and and that's the beauty of it right
04:37now for the team like oh we don't want to trade these guys we want to get people to come
04:40to the
04:40ballpark no no your fans are already done they're they're out on you they don't like this team and so
04:46you now have a golden opportunity to trade some of these parts and maybe make your team better
04:50and win your fans back too because last night and then you guys were there as well there were a
04:55lot
04:55of ticked off people at this baseball club in a way that i haven't seen people ticked off
05:00at this baseball club like despondent almost you know royals currently 20 and 30 on the season
05:06through 50 games they're eight and a half games at a first place they are four and a half i
05:10believe
05:10out of wild card i could double check that so i'm not giving in misinformation um but i believe that
05:15was the number as of yesterday but obviously some teams played wild card what do you think about
05:21this for the four and a half uh okay that's closer than i thought nine one three what do you
05:25think
05:25it would be 2016 all over again when they don't trade anyone and it set us back for years it
05:28did
05:28that's exactly right that's a perfect comp and and the difference is though and i'll give you some
05:33perspective on that one and that was david glass they they knew he was getting to the end and they
05:39knew he didn't have many years left and they wanted to be all in for him and they wanted to
05:44try to win
05:45it one more time for him and it didn't work out right it didn't work out but you had those
05:50pieces
05:50still you cosmoor was still here moose was still here esky was still here you went and traded for all
05:55of
05:55those relievers from san diego and they all came in and were terrible but you also had injuries that
06:02year too right cane got hurt and i think moose got hurt that year as well and once they had
06:07those
06:07injuries and lost those two guys and the season pretty much was over they still finished at 81 and
06:1281 that year but yeah it's it's time to start making those moves because you you want to learn
06:17from the past right you can look at that man we probably should have traded but we pushed and we
06:22were all in we're not in the same situation you know john sherman isn't getting ready to you know
06:25sell the team or move on or anything like that so there's no pressure like oh we've got to get
06:30this
06:30done for our owner at this point in time like they felt in 2016 and he wanted to push in
06:35a little bit
06:35more david glass did at that time like give him credit he could have said trade everybody after that
06:40season and they probably should have traded more guys after the 2015 season to keep this thing moving
06:45in the right direction but they wanted to keep it together for the fans the fans aren't in love with
06:50this ball club at all they were in love with the 14 and 15 ball club they loved the way
06:54that they
06:55played they loved the grit the hustle the baseball that they played out there the the fan base feel
07:00for this team is a 180 compared to what it was for that team and really other than bobby witt
07:05and jack
07:05caglione at this point in time guys i don't think the fan base would be disappointed if anybody was
07:09traded off this roster right now so you do have that golden opportunity where the fans aren't going to be
07:14ticked off if you trade guys it's definitely been a struggle bus the royals have three wins in their
07:19last 13 games um want to bring this up what would pit what pisses you guys off more the receiver
07:26room
07:26around patrick mahomes the last three years or the talent surrounded bobby witt jr the last three years
07:31well it's the talent around bobby witt jr because at least mahomes was able to get to the super bowl
07:35right and win a super bowl with with lesser talent it's hard to do that when you're bobby like i
07:40watch
07:40bobby witt play baseball and i feel like he's in a different game than everybody else that's how good he
07:45is
07:45right he's fantastic and he's up there he gets hits he makes plays but you can't do it alone
07:50you got to have help you got to have some guys with you so yeah i think the talent that's
07:55patrick mahomes is basically surrounded for one year by some subpar talent they figured it out the
07:59last couple of years right but i think bobby witt to me yeah you have not done a good enough
08:04job of
08:05surrounding him with the proper people and you can do that by trading michael waka and maybe getting a
08:09great second baseman in return or a big power hitting outfielder bat in return you hold all the cards
08:14right now waka's going to be coveted by a playoff team did you ask worse or hurts more what hurts
08:20more mahomes hurts me more because i'm seeing him run around and get hurt and stuff like that just
08:24the sport but yeah which is worse yeah bobby i mean at least at some point you know you got
08:28we got we
08:28could rattle off a few hall of famers that mahomes has gotten to throw the ball to yeah exactly yeah
08:33and hall of famers on defense that have helped them out and a hall of famer on the sidelines that
08:36have
08:36helped him out bobby's got nothing he's fighting a battle by himself right now yes we have great
08:41listeners on the text line that decided to chime in on the uh harrison ford weed names no okay uh
08:46we
08:46have han toke first that's great we have han stone low oh that's good oh just you wait okay spark
08:57of
08:58the covenant you want the last one yes return of the red eyes yeah on that note we'll be back
09:07with
09:07dan hughes on 96.5 the fan you're
