00:00All right, let's dive into it.
00:02It's almost like they waited until we were off the air to talk about this.
00:08So Adam Schefter puts this out.
00:11One week before being ordered to serve 30 days in jail,
00:16Chiefs receiver Rasheed Rice underwent a cleanup surgery on his right knee
00:21to remove loose debris that was causing inflammation
00:25and now is expected to be sidelined for two months.
00:32Now, the amount of athletes that have surgery in the offseason,
00:38football players, is a really, really high amount.
00:43A lot of it doesn't get reported because it's pretty routine stuff.
00:49You're working out.
00:51You're colliding into people.
00:52You're running.
00:53You're jumping.
00:53It's the offseason.
00:55It doesn't affect your timeline of being able to compete.
00:58You're not going to miss training camp.
01:00This is just par for the course things you got to do to maintain your body
01:05to play such a barbaric and grueling sport.
01:08The surgery is not a big deal.
01:11It just continues to be all of the things that are wrapped around it with Rasheed Rice.
01:19We have talked about this, how important this offseason is,
01:22how your focus needs to be on how you can stay healthy,
01:26how you can stay on the field, how you can contribute at a high level,
01:30how you can dominate this season and put yourself in the best place that you can
01:36to cash out on your talents.
01:38But again, Rasheed Rice just doesn't get the message.
01:44I was reading a story today by Sam McDowell, and I thought it was a fantastic story.
01:49I would encourage everybody to read it.
01:51It is not behind a paywall with the Kansas City Star.
01:54Sam McDowell is the best columnist right now in the city.
01:57And the story says this, there are several ways to react to his latest decision and situation,
02:03but surprise, should not be one of them.
02:06There is no longer room, however remote, for this to be the story of a 20-something-year-old
02:11who made a single mistake.
02:13The pattern has become the story, himself above all else, himself at the expense of all else.
02:22This is what I was communicating yesterday.
02:26The sole act of smoking marijuana is not that big of a deal to me.
02:32My, quote, condemnation of Rasheed Rice is not wrapped around the morality of how could
02:39you do something like this?
02:40That's not where my criticism comes from.
02:43That's not in my heart.
02:44My criticism comes from this has just been a continued and repeated pattern of bad decisions
02:51and heading into a season in which the Chiefs absolutely are relying on Rasheed Rice physically.
02:58They're relying on him from a production standpoint.
03:02You're now going to spend the first 30 days of your rehab in jail?
03:08I'm guessing you're not getting the proper nutrition that you need in there.
03:13I'm guessing they're not giving you all the access to your physical trainer and doctors
03:18and the things that you need to keep your body at tip-top shape to play National League football.
03:26That's what I'm guessing.
03:28You know what's at stake.
03:30You know how important this upcoming season is.
03:34We're not talking about small amount of monies.
03:36We're not talking about chum change.
03:38We're not even talking about public perception of you and being tried in the court of a public opinion.
03:43We're talking about you got the opportunity to really cash out with the big-time year.
03:48You're in an amazing situation.
03:51You've been drafted by a team that has won multiple Super Bowls.
03:54You've been drafted by a team that has been the blueprint of the 2020s.
03:59A team that has a Hall of Fame head coach that is respected all around the league
04:03that is known for giving chances.
04:05You have been paired with a generational quarterback that's one of the five greatest quarterbacks
04:10in the history of the sport.
04:11How have you blown this so bad?
04:14I want to play for you guys what Adam Schefter had to say.
04:17He was on his podcast, the Adam Schefter podcast, and here he is talking about how jail could
04:23affect the rehab timeline for the Chiefs' number one wide receiver.
04:26This is really remarkable to me.
04:28It's Memorial Day weekend, and as we record this Tuesday morning, and as will be the case
04:34for the next 29 days, Rasheed Rice will remain in a Dallas County jail.
04:40He will remain in a Dallas County jail at a time where he just underwent knee surgery last week
04:47to clean up his knee, so now the rehab that he was supposed to do with his medical staff,
04:53the Chiefs' medical staff, wherever and whoever he was going to be doing it with,
04:57he's now going to be in a jail cell.
05:01And the rehab was supposed to be about two months.
05:05That would put him on track to be ready for the start of training camp.
05:10Now, I don't know what happens when you spend the first 30 days in jail,
05:14and you're essentially in charge of your knee.
05:18I don't think there are any trainers at the Dallas County jail,
05:21and so what I think of here is the opportunity that he's squandering.
05:29Everybody should have the same opinion regarding Rasheed Rice.
05:33There's a lot of different things that we can have differing opinions on.
05:38I think the Thunder are going to win the NBA Finals.
05:42If you think it's the Spurs or the Knicks, that's fine.
05:45We're allowed to have a different opinion on that topic,
05:48but when it comes to this topic, it is a story right now of squandered potential.
05:54It is the story of someone who has failed to live up to expectations
05:58and also failed to meet his obligations as a citizen,
06:03has failed to meet his obligation as a teammate.
06:08That's what this story is right now.
06:10Now, I don't want to make it seem like this is the end of the story for Rasheed Rice.
06:14There's always time to turn it around.
06:17You are still a 20-something, but at least up to this point,
06:21Rasheed Rice has just not shown you the decision-making,
06:25the discernment to give you the hope and trust and belief
06:29that he is going to turn it around.
06:33You would think that he has had enough multiple opportunities
06:37that would show you the light of,
06:39man, I'm living a really fortunate life.
06:43A lot of people believe that you and your friends shot at somebody's car
06:47when you were in college.
06:49You still got drafted high in the National Football League
06:52and were given millions of dollars.
06:56You had a very serious car accident in which you could have died,
07:01people that you loved could have died,
07:04strangers could have died,
07:05and you left the scene with really no remorse
07:08for anybody else's life and safety other than your own.
07:13For all of that,
07:15you got 30 days in jail
07:17where you got five years to decide
07:20when you wanted to do it.
07:24The mother of your children went on Instagram
07:27and posted a very lengthy post
07:30about how you have physically abused her.
07:33The NFL took your side in the argument.
07:38Rasheed Rice has been very, very fortunate.
07:42So I think to watch somebody
07:44who clearly has the ability that he has,
07:47if he locked in,
07:48there's no question in my mind,
07:50Rasheed Rice could be one of the better receivers
07:52in the National Football League,
07:53but what is a locked-in,
07:56focused,
07:57about his business,
07:58about his money,
07:59what does that version of Rasheed Rice look like?
08:02And I'm afraid that we will never see it
08:05in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform.
08:06Coming up on the other side,
08:08I want to play for Rob
08:09what Nate Taylor had to say yesterday.
08:11I want to play for Rob
08:11what Nate Taylor had to say yesterday.
