Shan, RJ, and Bobby took us Inside The Red Zone and broke down a nightmare draft scenario for the Cowboys. How would you feel if Dallas drafted Dillon Thieneman with Caleb Downs still on the board? They debated both prospects, why teams may value one over the other, and more.

00:01As a Cowboy follower and fan, well, I'm always scarred into thinking about nightmare scenarios.
00:09How are they going to lose this big game?
00:11How are they going to get beat down in this playoff matchup?
00:15And I'm starting to think about this for next Thursday with NFL draft coverage right here.
00:19Sorry, pessimistic, but my wife has beaten this into my brain.
00:24What will go wrong, what can go wrong, will go wrong.
00:27It's the life of a Cowboy fan.
00:30And when I listened to this yesterday from Daniel Jeremiah, who also went on the KNC Masterpiece a few weeks
00:35ago, I said, damn it.
00:39If this happened, Pluckers will be smashing beer glasses everywhere.
00:46We're going to be kept up with no sleep and come in here on Friday morning freaking out and going
00:52nuts.
00:53This is part one.
00:55Daniel Jeremiah on the Joel Klatt podcast talking about not Caleb Downs, but Dylan Thienemann.
01:05And if he could go at 12, the Cowboys have a glaring need in the secondary and its safety position.
01:10I think Thienemann could be the 12th pick in the draft.
01:13Tosh Lupoi, who we've just established, loves Thienemann.
01:17Where was along his journey?
01:18Where was he at?
01:18He was at Alabama in 20.
01:21Gosh, he was there from 2014 all the way to 2018.
01:24He was a code DC in 2017.
01:26You know who was coaching in that secondary?
01:29It was Derek Ainsley.
01:30You know who coaches DBs for the Dallas Cowboys right now?
01:33Oh, I haven't put this together.
01:35Derek Ainsley.
01:36Oh, my God.
01:37That's why I've been saying I think Thienemann could be the 12th pick in the draft.
01:42Now, great follow-up from Joel.
01:44And this is my cynical nightmare fan reaction scenario.
01:51And I'd have to see it to believe it.
01:53I don't believe it would happen.
01:55But what if?
01:56Are you saying, Joel Klatt, podcast with Daniel Jeremiah, that Thienemann would be picked at 12 if Caleb Downs is
02:06still on the damn board?
02:09I would say, I'll tell you for a fact, I know some teams have it that way.
02:13I don't.
02:14Really?
02:15I'm telling you some teams have it that way.
02:17Erroneous.
02:17Wow.
02:18And I'm not saying they do.
02:20And I would, in that scenario, I would have them taking downs.
02:24But if Downs goes 10, you know, Downs goes 11, I mean, any of those teams, 10, 11, 12, could
02:30all be in that.
02:30And look at Kansas City's picking nine.
02:32They've got issues in the secondary.
02:33So, I think that's the window.
02:36I think that nine to 12.
02:37And I wouldn't be shocked if both those guys are in that nine to 12 range when it's all set.
02:43So, my first scenario I brought up in the last segment, oh, what if you do give up everything you
02:47trade up for Bailey or Reese?
02:49And then you see Downs picked at 12.
02:53And I'm like, oh, I could have just kept all my ammo and gotten Downs at 12.
02:57But I'm ending up with a stud at the top of the draft.
02:59This would cause an absolute meltdown.
03:05Dana Jeremiah said multiple times, there are teams, ah, plural, that have Thiedemann over Downs.
03:11Can you imagine?
03:12You're sitting at your Pluckers and Alliance, and you're at 12, and Downs is there, and they go with the
03:1712 pick of the Dallas Cowboys like Dylan Thiedemann.
03:20What would happen?
03:21What would happen?
03:22I would go next door to the movie theater, and I would get a seat, and I would wait for
03:30the 30 for 30 to come out on this draft.
03:32The documentary on the rise and fall of the Dallas Cowboys.
03:36That's exactly what I would be doing.
03:38Would that be worse than the Johnny reaction y'all were present for?
03:43Yes.
03:44That was like selfish disappointment when we're like, yeah, this is probably the smart thing to do.
03:51I trashed Manziel's character.
03:53My first fight with the fan base here 15 years ago, happy anniversary, you said last weekend to us?
03:58Yeah, it was Saturday.
03:59It was A&M fans when I was like, this guy's a douchebag.
04:02Like, most electrifying college football effect I've ever experienced with covering a team by far.
04:09It was amazing.
04:10But he's not going to be a good college quarterback.
04:12He's just throwing up to Mike Evans.
04:14He's just chucking it, heaving it.
04:15But I wanted Johnny on the Cowboys for the show ratings.
04:19That was more, they did the smart thing.
04:22This would be, I think, outrage.
04:26That was disappointment.
04:27This would be outrage.
04:29But Jeremiah is saying.
04:31I'm not saying, again, I'm just throwing this out there for 90% fun.
04:35But Jeremiah is saying some people have Thedeman over Downs.
04:38It doesn't surprise me.
04:41I mean, there's 32 of them.
04:43And I would imagine there's teams that are just going to be much more about measurables and stuff.
04:49So those teams are going to have Thedeman above him.
04:51Thedeman's more prototypical size.
04:54Thedeman's faster.
04:55Like, he's a better athlete.
04:56Or at least will test as a better athlete.
04:59Downs is a really good athlete.
05:00It's just I don't know that it shows up as testing.
05:02But on a football field, you can see, you saw that play on the Downs highlight reel.
05:07He's 25 yards off the ball.
05:08The ball's pitched in the backfield.
05:10And he, like, raced in to get behind the line of scrimmage before the bat got there.
05:14So he's a really, really good athlete, especially at the line of scrimmage.
05:18But what would you do if they did that, though?
05:21My biggest concern would be that that is with the 28th pick in the 2017 NFL draft,
05:27the Dallas Cowboys select Taco Charlton, and then TJ Watt's sitting there,
05:31and they just let him go.
05:33Wow, you compare it to that.
05:34I'd be worried about that.
05:36Thedeman is a much better prospect than Taco was.
05:38I did not think Taco was going to be a good player.
05:41You have Thedeman as a first-rounder?
05:42No.
05:43No.
05:43No.
05:44He's top of the second.
05:46But he's a good player, and I think he's got a lot of upside.
05:51They'd be, I wouldn't, just in a vacuum, would I like Dylan Thedeman on this defense?
05:56Yeah.
05:56I would not like them passing up Caleb Downs for Dylan Thedeman,
06:00which I don't think they would do.
06:01Yeah.
06:02Can't imagine.
06:03I can't imagine they would.
06:04And, you know, DJ, I love DJ.
06:07He's had a little subtle.
06:08He didn't say, by the way.
06:09He said he thinks the Cowboys would take Downs.
06:11I know.
06:11He would take Downs, but.
06:13He's had a little subtle just water-throwing on Downs for like two months now,
06:17just in general as a prospect.
06:19And look, I would be personally upset if they took Thedeman at 20.
06:27Let's say they take Bain at 12.
06:29All right?
06:30They don't get Delane.
06:31If they get Delane, then you could take Thedeman at 20.
06:34I'm fine with that.
06:34But if you get Bain, I need a corner.
06:39You know, I need Hood at 20.
06:40Why can't you have a safety?
06:42I just feel like I need one.
06:43I feel like a corner is more important for one.
06:45Yeah.
06:45Agreed.
06:46And I think in the first round, I got a study about this,
06:49about some of these positions in the first versus other rounds.
06:55But, like, I just, you know, to me, like, getting a corner in the first round
06:59versus trying to find one in other rounds is,
07:02you're going to get a much bigger drop-off than you would from a safety.
07:07Yeah, but, I mean, generally, it's very rare that a first-round safety does not hit.
07:12Exactly.
07:12No, no, you're right.
07:13You're right.
07:14No, no, I understand what you're saying.
07:16But, like, I feel like I need a corner.
07:18I feel like I would be disappointed if I came away from this draft in the first round
07:20without one of the lane or Hood.
07:24But what if you're trading a day three pick for a corner?
07:26You're trading it for Kenny Moore.
07:29Indianapolis.
07:30I mean, that's better.
07:32That makes me feel a little bit better.
07:34This is kind of what I mean, though.
07:35They're starting, when you think about, like, the fact that they're going to have
07:37Thompson play some corner, I would imagine, and some of the stuff that's going on.
07:41This is why I'm also, like, they need to at least just look at,
07:44is there a market for Revel, and is it the best fit here anymore?
07:48And is this the best fit here now with our defensive coordinator?
07:52Because it's just you've added Durant, you've got Bland, you've got Revel,
07:56you're going to play Thompson inside.
07:57If you then draft another corner, somebody's not playing that often.
08:00And so at that point, it's like, is that a best use?
08:02Somebody should, whether it's Revel, like, all right, let's try and maximize this,
08:05or you're looking to go, let's move off a Bland's contract.
08:07Somebody at that point you might start needing to look at, like,
08:09let's just start allocating resources a little differently.
08:12Albert Breer with other inside the mailbag draft notes.
08:16The GM of one team picking in the top ten told me Ruben Bain did not seem willing
08:21to discuss the car incident when questioned on it.
08:25An executive with another team in the top ten said Bain was open to the extent
08:29he could be about the situation.
08:32I'd say Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate is secure as a top ten pick
08:39and could go as high as number four to the Titans or five to the Giants.
08:43After that, I don't sense there's a consensus number two at the receiver position.
08:49We already went through Jake Golday after Stiles as a linebacker.
08:53Some people throw in Jacob Rodriguez into that mix,
08:56and then Breer finishes with, if there is movement,
08:59in the second ten picks, ten to twenty, and I expect there to be some,
09:03it could be generated by the tackles.
09:06They have a tackle, Caden Proctor will go higher than I think some people
09:09have him right now.
09:11So that is Albert Breer.
09:13The offensive line is one of the biggest mysteries to me
09:17and could really shift things in terms of what Dallas is looking at at twelve
09:20or whether they need to go up.
09:22That may be what they're waiting to, when we talk about them reacting to stuff
09:25on draft day, they may be reacting to just see if there's a run on tackles early.
09:27And if they don't see the run on tackles, then that signals to them that,
09:30all right, the guys are going to get snatched up.
09:32I want to know how much times ten they're doing these scenarios
09:38that we've been doing over the past two months.
09:41How do you do this in terms of drills, exercises?
09:43How much time is allotted to all this?
09:45They will...
09:45Because this is a lot.
09:47Next week, they will run, like, several mock drafts.
09:50And they will operate as though, like, they're going through a mock scenario.
09:54And so they'll go through trades and different things like that.
09:57I think the Giants is such a...
09:59The big thing is everybody feels like, I think, that they know,
10:01all right, you're getting Mendoza and then an edge of some sort at two.
10:06If Arizona stands in, there's a chance they take Maui Noah, an offensive lineman,
10:10or they could go Bailey or somebody like that.
10:12Well, then a four, okay, if they go Maui Noah,
10:15then that may change what Tennessee's going to do.
10:17Because, oh, somebody's sitting on the board that we didn't think.
10:19Bailey's here now.
10:20We're going to take Bailey.
10:21Then the Giants get a five.
10:23It's been penciled in that it's Stiles, but there's a lot of talk that,
10:26well, they could be sitting there and go, we want Fano, the offensive lineman,
10:30because we need to really rebuild our trenches.
10:32Cleveland wants an offensive lineman.
10:33If Cleveland can't bail out, they're probably going to just take a Caden Proctor at that.
10:37So if Dallas starts seeing, all right, three offensive linemen have dropped,
10:40we know a receiver's going to go.
10:41So somebody's getting to us.
10:43Then they got that sense.
10:44Whereas if they get to pick three, and either they haven't traded up for it,
10:49but Arizona's bailed out and somebody's taking Bailey there or Reese,
10:53whoever's left, and then the Titans go with a Stiles or something,
10:55now they're going to start going, all right, go.
10:57We've got to go up to six.
10:59Yeah.
11:00But you're going up to two or three.
11:03You've got to make a quick decision.
11:05I would say there's an 80% chance that the Cowboys pick in the top ten.
11:0980%?
11:10Yes.
11:11Because I think they're going to see the way the board starts falling.
11:13We've got to go up.
11:14The nine and 29 is still the one that intrigues me the most.
11:17I don't think they'll go up to three.
11:19I just think that's too far.
11:20But I do think six or nine is a decent bet.
11:25Because I also, like, I don't know, just go up to three.
11:30Is the third-round pick going to do it along with 12 and 20?
11:34In this market, it might.
11:36I mean, you've got to think about it.
11:37In a normal market, would it not have to be, like, next year's?
11:39When the Texans went up for Will Anderson, which I think was 12 to three,
11:43they had to give up their first, another first, a second, and a third.
11:49Oh, so for Dallas, that would have to be this year's third
11:51and next year's second.
11:53That's a lot, guys.
11:54But I don't think the Cardinals, I don't think they can,
11:57Dallas will just hold firm and be like, okay, go find somebody else.
12:00You're not going to get a better offer.
12:01Nobody's going to give you another first this year to come up here
12:03that's in a better spot, so take it.
