00:00Who are the Cowboys going to get here in about six weeks to top off this busting of the budget?
00:07Sean Tree.
00:07Let's talk about it here in Below the Belt, which is brought to you by Academy Sports and Outdoors and
00:11Window Nation.
00:12How are you feeling today?
00:14Because I know Friday you were a little sour.
00:17Very emotional week.
00:19I'm starting to hate Max Crosby now.
00:22I don't like that.
00:23He's like, I'm a raider for life.
00:24It's just going to mean more.
00:26He's like a much better Derek Carr right now with his emotions, his raider emotions.
00:31No one call him Derek Carr's shocker as he wants everyone to probably line up and cry for him to
00:37come back and underperform for their team as well.
00:40So I was trying to figure, I was asking myself before free agency started, if you told me the Cowboys
00:47after week one spent the blank most amount of money, where would I have been happy?
00:53And I settled with, if you told me they were a top 10 spender, I'd be happy with the whole
01:00bust the budget thing.
01:01I'm not expecting you to be top three.
01:03I'm not expecting you to be top five.
01:05You know, if you told me you were number 10 in terms of spending, I think I'd be happy with
01:11that.
01:11And you're blindly just looking at, regardless of cap space.
01:15Yep.
01:15Okay.
01:16Because they told me.
01:17Right.
01:17They told me all, Michael was, he was training up out of here, not just for our Herschel picks, but
01:23all the money we had.
01:24Yeah.
01:24Oh, we can make moves now with that money.
01:26That was part of Jerry's justification.
01:28He said that over and over again.
01:31Now, if you also told me they got, how many new defensive starters in week one?
01:37And I said, and you told me three, I think I'd be satisfied.
01:41So I've, I've, I've calmed down a little bit.
01:43Now I don't have the one through 10 spending in terms of who has spent the most, but I would,
01:48I would not think Dallas was in the top 10.
01:50So, and they are limited.
01:53Would you prefer to include or not the Gary salary as part of their spending?
02:00Um, I mean, I, I think you have to include it.
02:03Okay.
02:04So without knowing what everybody else did across the NFL, cause I just,
02:08they're paying out $15 million.
02:10Any trades, anybody else made, I don't know necessarily.
02:13I'm not going to have those numbers for, I just know offhand what Gary got and how to
02:16add it to the Cowboys totals.
02:17I mean, you have to count it as them signing a $15 million player, right?
02:21Yeah.
02:22I mean, I, I, I would think so.
02:23Cause I mean, that's, that's how they, they just, you chose to spend their dollars that
02:26way was to acquire that player.
02:27So they would be, let's see here.
02:2932, 31, 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24.
02:35Right now they're 24th without the Gary deal.
02:37So if you go with the Gary deal, they would be 24, 23, 22, 21.
02:42They would be like 18th, like middle of the pack.
02:47Yeah.
02:47That's not the budget to me.
02:49No, but it is, this would be, let me see.
02:51What have they spent so far?
02:52They have spent about 35 million more in contract value this off season than they have the previous
03:01six combined.
03:02Wow.
03:03Oh, so they definitely went and spent more relative to that.
03:07Yeah.
03:08But let's look at really the three new defensive starters.
03:11That's solid.
03:12Yeah.
03:12And, and I still think they could go out and get a couple other guys, maybe through the
03:17trade market too, which would be bigger players than who you could get in free.
03:20Throw those names back out that you did at six.
03:23So the, the free agent names that I threw out there were Jerry Tillery, who played for
03:27the chiefs last year and is a six year vet or whatever he is.
03:32Um, but he's somebody who's played with Marcus Dixon and Christian Parker before and could
03:36be a flexible and tackle type of piece.
03:39And then the other one who was afraid that Shaq Thompson, the linebacker who had been with
03:42Buffalo last year, who's getting a little older, um, but still not as old as Demario
03:46Davis or Bobby Wagner or any of those guys and could be a green dot for you on the interior.
03:51I remember him in Carolina.
03:53Yeah, but he was, he was really young when he was coming out of college.
03:57So even though he's been in the NFL for forever now, he's, uh, he's 31.
04:00So he's not 36, 37, like some of the other linebackers we've talked about.
04:04Um, all right.
04:04So let's take a look at how some of the mock drafts have changed ever since, uh, the free
04:11agency period has ended.
04:12So we'll start with the first one here.
04:14This one from the athletic, their updated mock draft.
04:17And there'll be another angle of this that we'll, we'll have to talk about, but ahead of
04:22view, uh, just within the division, the giants and the athletics mock draft takes Spencer
04:26Fano, the offensive tackle from Utah who may have to play inside, uh, at seven, the
04:31Washington commanders took Jeremiah love the running back from Notre Dame.
04:35And then after things fall down to you with no Caleb downs, no sunny styles at pick 12,
04:39the athletic has the Cowboys taking monster delaying cornerback from LSU, which has been
04:43a very common pick assigned to them.
04:46Would you, if all things are equal, would you de-prioritize corner at this point?
04:52Or would that still be one of the first two you would take?
04:54I would take one of that as one of the first two.
04:56Even, even if I told you like the linebacker, the edge rusher in the corner are the same
05:01player, like value wise.
05:03Which one would you want to take right now?
05:07Corner or the end.
05:08Okay.
05:08So those are the top two for you.
05:09You want to see them address that?
05:10Okay.
05:10Um, so corner for me, I can't value linebacker the same, right?
05:14I'm not totally dismissing it, but like, I, I, I can't, I can't put that up there with
05:19DN and corner.
05:20Unless you're, unless you're telling me that this is a guy that can Fred Warner or he
05:24could be, you know, it's, it's, uh, we're looking at a DeMarcus Ware at a three, four
05:28LT at three, four, which would be an edge, which would be the address.
05:31Uh, pick 20 for them.
05:33CJ Allen, the linebacker from Georgia.
05:34So they come out of the first round with no edge rusher on this athletic mock, uh, go over
05:38to Athlon sports, Luke Easterling has a new mock draft up this one.
05:43I would, uh, I would not love at all.
05:45Um, so you do get some of the stuff that you need.
05:47You got Francis Maui Noah going ahead of you.
05:49Jeremiah love goes for in this draft, sunny styles goes five to the giants, uh, seven with
05:54the commanders they get, uh, it's a trade to Baltimore and he has Baltimore coming up
05:58to get Ruben Bain, which that would probably annoy everybody.
06:01If they got Ruben Bain and Trey Hendrickson and then Max Crosby for a minute.
06:04Uh, but then the Cowboys at number 12, take Dylan Thienemann, the safety from Oregon,
06:10which feels very high.
06:12Um, he's a good player, but that would feel be there at 20.
06:16That would feel rich to me.
06:17And then at number 20, if I told you he's not there at 20, would it change your mind?
06:22Probably not.
06:23Um, not after you signed Jalen Thompson, Jalen Thompson's not enough for me to blow off Caleb
06:27Downs.
06:28He might be enough for me to pick somebody else other than Dylan Thienemann.
06:31Yeah.
06:31Uh, 20, the Cowboys then take Keldrick Falk, the edge rusher from Auburn, who would be,
06:35I would imagine a hand down in the dirt defensive lineman in the three, four years.
06:38So not really a big time pass rusher that you're acquiring there, uh, over at the USA
06:44today, uh, mock draft that they have.
06:46This one is, and by the way, I should say in that last mock draft that we had there from
06:51Luke Easterling, uh, he had David Bailey falling to six again.
06:55And so this is a couple of mock drafts that we've seen that have David Bailey, the
06:58edge rusher from Texas tech falling out of the top five.
07:01If that happens, I would trade the two picks and go up there because I want him.
07:05He's, he's really, really good.
07:07Uh, all right.
07:08From USA today, Sonny styles goes to the giants at five.
07:11That's becoming a pretty common projection.
07:13Number seven, the commander stake Ruben Bain, Ruben Bain goes to seven again.
07:17Then he has the Cowboys at 12 taking Montsor Delaney, the cornerback from LSU, which again,
07:21seems like a fit.
07:21And then a guy we've talked about a little bit, the guy opposite Ruben Bain, the edge rusher at
07:2520, Akeem Mezador would be for their pick at 20.
07:29And then the final one we have, this one just came out on Saturday.
07:32This is from the ringer and they are, they're a little all over the place with some of their
07:37projections.
07:37They have Bain going four to the Titans, which would be to me right now, a surprise.
07:42Cause I think there are enough teams around the NFL that are just a little like, well,
07:46what does he, does he fit everything we need?
07:49Like it's one of those.
07:50He's yeah, but he's a player, but teams historically have, have not been willing to just say he's
07:55a player.
07:56Let's take him and figure it out.
07:57If you don't check their boxes, they generally will pass on you.
08:00Sonny styles, number five to the New York giants, Jeremiah loves seven to the commanders.
08:06And then David Bailey falls to eight in this draft to the new Orleans saints.
08:10Whoa.
08:10If the Browns are looking to get out at six, that would be the spot.
08:13So if you're, if you want David Bailey, if you're a Cowboys fan and you follow college
08:16football and you saw Texas tech last year and you saw what a monster David Bailey is,
08:19that's the sweet spot to me.
08:21Pick six, get ahead of the commanders, handle things there.
08:24Caleb downs goes at 10 to the Bengals.
08:26That's becoming a little bit more commonly mocked.
08:28I want to hear from Texas tech fans who are also Cowboy fans.
08:32And I want to know if you would give up the Capitol to, to get Bailey as a, as a
08:38Texas tech
08:38and a Cowboy fan, or are you going to say, no, we need more.
08:42We need more bodies.
08:43Now here's the problem.
08:44Number 11 is Montsor Delane goes to the Miami dolphins.
08:47So in this instance, you kind of get your version of wiped out where none of the top
08:54edge rushers are there anymore.
08:55The corner you like is gone.
08:57The safety is gone.
08:58The linebacker is gone.
08:59And at that point, one of these names we have not heard mocked to the Cowboys very often
09:04at all.
09:04Number 12, the Cowboys in this ringer mock draft take Clemson cornerback, Avion Terrell,
09:10who is AJ Terrell's brother.
09:11They write that new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker is widely recognized as one
09:15of the best defensive back coaches in the league.
09:17And he needs a player to build around in Dallas.
09:19The secondary Terrell is a versatile enough to play man or zone in the slot or outside
09:23blitzing or shadowing top receivers.
09:25He plays so much like his older brother that I'm not sure I'd be able to tell their college
09:29film apart.
09:30Here's the biggest risk about projecting any corner right now to Dallas.
09:34And the thing that I'm a little hesitant to do, I can through history and other things
09:41like just buzz that you hear and stuff.
09:44I could probably get an idea of which corners the personnel department may like that.
09:49The others don't.
09:51If Christian Parker, who is a secondary coach, is so particular potentially about what he
09:56looks for and what you need to be, that's a factor that makes projecting that position,
10:02I think, more difficult than any of the others, because he could just there could be some blind
10:06spot on a player that you're not even aware of that Christian Parker may hold against
10:10him.
10:11Not like in a petty sort of way, but just like that doesn't fit what I want.
10:14Yeah.
10:15A lot of people would have been like, well, Osa could have stuck around here.
10:18Jadavion Clowney could have stuck around here and they couldn't.
10:21And that wasn't even in the secondary.
10:22So I think that that's relevant here.
10:25They end up double dipping in the secondary on this mock draft, even after going to get in
10:28PJ Locke, Kobe Durant, Jalen Thompson.
10:31They then pick Dylan Fienemann from Oregon at pick 20, which I like the player better
10:36at 20 than I do 12.
10:37I would be interested in taking him there.
10:39But if I've already taken a corner at 12 and the vast majority of my acquisitions this
10:44offseason have been in the secondary, I don't know that I want to just throw every single
10:49dart at like, but we'll cover and do nothing else.
10:52Now, Christian Parker, that is his scheme.
10:54Christian Parker's scheme is not going to get after the quarterback the way Dan Quinn's
10:57does.
10:57It's going to be more about coverage and making things difficult on quarterbacks to read.
11:02And then, you know, you'll you'll be able to generate some passers.
11:05But Philly hasn't even been over the last few years has not been just like top five.
11:09Yeah, they're not one of these teams that just like, oh, my gosh, they're in the backfield
11:12after, you know, one second and they're causing to make mistakes.
11:14They make it really difficult for quarterbacks to be able to tell what's happening.
11:17What what am I doing here?
11:19And they think that confusing the coverage, they think that confusing the quarterback
11:22is more valuable than pressuring the quarterback and then making the quarterback make a decision
11:27quicker.
11:28They think that he could stand up there for 10 seconds.
11:30If he doesn't know what he's looking at, it doesn't matter.
11:32Below the belt.
