Bobby took us Below The Belt to break down the Cowboys’ draft outlook. They discussed potential first-round targets, what the team values at linebacker, and the impact of selecting players who fit the scheme versus just filling needs. They also touched on trade scenarios, positional priorities, the benefits of focusing on best player available, and more.

00:00do we already know who the cowboys are drafting let's talk about it in below the belt which is
00:04sponsored by academy sports and outdoors and window nation first off the fan text would like
00:10to let uh rj choppy know cameron brink was on page's team last year in unrivaled you know
00:15that was a miss that's how that's how focused on page you were you know i thought it was sophie
00:20cunningham are you saying all blondes look alike i thought i thought it was sophie cunningham i
00:23mistook her for sophie cunningham okay all right you just you who was not in unrivaled i'm kidding
00:29i don't know i don't honestly i have no idea i think she's too busy doing podcasts and being
00:34muscle for caitlin clark uh all right over at the athletic uh and this was from a couple weeks ago
00:41the john michota did a look at basically you have the cowboys picking at 20 right now so he wanted
00:47to look at who are the 20 names that he thinks could be in play for the cowboys to pick
00:52because
00:53then once you get to it's like hey here's 20 names no matter who comes off the board i would
00:56guess they
00:56come away with two of them because obviously there's only 18 selections around this these
01:00would be one of the 20 that they got so he's got a list of names to look at and
01:04names that could go
01:05up for names that could fall to him that they'd be interested in but he starts off with the ohio
01:10state guys so he says arvel reese linebacker edge however they would view him they would view him
01:16here in this system as an outside linebacker for sure caleb downs the safety from ohio state
01:20sonny styles the linebacker from ohio state and i think styles is really important to to watch as
01:28they continue to look at the linebacker position because the way this defense is seems to be
01:39basically looking through how they view the linebacker position and what you should look like
01:43the things you need to have and you look at who they were interested in quay walker the fact that
01:48maybe nicobe dean was secondary to them and some of the linebackers they seemingly let just pass off
01:52the board i think one of the things that's starting to pop they like length like i think they really
02:00want linebackers who are particularly long able to probably disengage from blocks do different things
02:06like that so demar vian over shown is 6-2 but he's got like 32 and a half inch arms
02:12or something
02:13you've got uh you know nicobe dean who they were not as high on as quay walker they were a
02:17little
02:17bit slower to come around on patrick queen it sounded like i think that may have been part
02:22of the coaching staff going i don't know does he fit what we want athletically patrick queen is very
02:27similar to what quay walker was patrick queen is six feet tall and his arms are under 32 inches
02:33so it does make me think that maybe they want some of that that length and athleticism combo there
02:39and that's definitely sunny styles uh david bailey the address from texas tech i still say
02:44if david bailey fell to set uh to six i'm trading up and getting him i'm just doing a lot
02:51yeah what
02:52do you have to give up to go for 20 and 12 20 and 12 i go to the browns
02:54for six and 38 dang i would do
02:58it yeah because bailey's a bailey's a difference maker and then i'll just take whoever's there at 38
03:02and i'll be like yeah sure they'll just go fill a need whatever it is and if they go out
03:06and they are
03:07able to stabilize the defense with jonathan allen patrick queen whoever may be if they're able to
03:15kind of fill those spots with veterans to get you by i'll take my chances with that in the name
03:19of
03:19getting david bailey here who i think could be david bailey's one of like three guys in this draft
03:24i think like that could be a star that's a guy who could be an absolute game breaker and if
03:29you
03:32okay if you miss on this they my biggest issue here they they had an opportunity they traded mike
03:41away they had four first round picks in two years that's a transformational stretch where you could
03:48just completely make your roster so elite if you hit gotta hit if you hit and to walk away
03:57with those four picks and only actually use one of them no no no because you'd be getting the second
04:04back so would you rather in this draft right now pick 12 20 and 92 or 6 38 and 92
04:1012 20 and 92
04:14i would not i'd much i i think you don't love a bailey yeah bailey fell well no i mean
04:20i think
04:20bailey fell to six but that would be falling a lot of drafts oh yeah he's going to there's a
04:25lot of
04:25is the gap between six and 12 bigger than the gap between 20 and 38 no because bailey is not
04:39expected to fall the gap between bailey and who's going to be there 12 is that's a bigger gap so
04:45sorry real quick
04:48if mccoy never got hurt
04:52who let's say mccoy cornerback from tennessee give the full name scout uh let's say he never got hurt
04:59uh-huh um how big is the gap between bailey and mccoy uh bailey's better i'm sure like i mean
05:07it's
05:08how big is the how big is the gap if if he never got or if he plays like he
05:12never got hurt like right
05:13it's 2026 acl could be 50 50 could we come back from it stronger than ever could come back from
05:19it
05:20and it'd be compromised is it bigger like i mean i how do you want i'm trying to say like
05:25you know
05:25like if mccoy is there and you take mccoy they're not taking mccoy i i'm not saying that but let's
05:30just
05:30say he never got hurt and or or he is a thousand percent healthy and he's there you know like
05:36how big
05:37is that gap between those two types of players versus a level 38 a level bailey's a level 38 is
05:44three levels right or two levels two probably i'm taking 12 to 20 field yates did uh i love the
05:52exercise he didn't say something nice make sure you're not saying anything bad about him he does
05:56he does catch wind of things said field yates was very nice to us in the restaurant lobby bobby was
06:01not there though um field yates did a mock draft after the first wave of free agency this is not
06:08great for the cowboys it hurts vegas mendoza at one the jets take david bailey at two arvel reese goes
06:18to the cardinals at three carnell tate goes to the titans at four caleb downs to the giants at five
06:25uh monroe freeling to the browns from georgia jeremiah love to the commanders at seven
06:34this is that giggle then pull that if you need to pull that's a giggle drop moving forward
06:41the saints take mckay lemon at eight uh how do you pronounce francis's last name moaga no maui no
06:49what maui noah there's no n in it i know miami tackle to the chiefs at nine
06:55reuben bain to the bangles at 10 a lot of big names yeah was that was delane in there
07:03no just so delane and styles would you're looking at uh downs was downs was okay so delane and styles
07:10at that point is who you're looking at i guess so which because at 10 you're 10 that's right now
07:14my dream scenario those two oh get like to have to dream if downs isn't there like to have your
07:21pick at 12 right because i don't think either i don't think both those guys not either one of
07:24those guys are not making it to 20 they don't think i've seen delane get down to 20 and some
07:29early on i've seen the cowboys get the first corner in a lot of different ones yeah yeah early on
07:34it's
07:35just he was thought maybe he could go to 20 the more it's gone along it's could he get he
07:39yeah
07:39probably will be there 12 but i mean he may not like based upon what they've addressed for me right
07:43now it's delane and styles is like my dream thursday so and let me run through the rest of the
07:48names real quick and then i'll throw this question to you uh number five on this list and this is
07:52john
07:52michauda's list of the the 20 players who could be picked by the cowboys in the first round
07:57monsoor delane cornerback lsu uh reuben bain edge rusher miami jeremiah love running back
08:03notre dame jeremiah love would be he is just he has slid and you're like uh what are we supposed
08:07to do here he's that good uh jermon mccoy cornerback tennessee under certain circumstances maybe they
08:12take him at 20 if he falls uh spencer finneau uh offensive tackle from utah francis malinoa
08:18offensive tackle miami keldrick falk edge rusher auburn we have probably not talked enough about
08:22him uh at around 6 6 285 pounds falk has the size and ability to rush from the edge or
08:28on the inside
08:28if the cowboys think he's more of an inside player they probably won't be as interested
08:31already having williams and kenny clark but if they think he projects better on the outside that size
08:36could be a good compliment to an undersized as a rock who yes as a stand-up head rusher he
08:40might be the
08:41third defensive lineman though if they draft him isn't this who john owning hates a lot of people don't love
08:46him because he's he's not he's not a twitched up edge rusher he's not a get to the quarterback he
08:52is a he's a powerful disengaged from blocks two gap kind of player that's what he is and so
08:58gary he's not a no no no no no edge no he's not i mean if you at auburn he
09:04did not get a lot of sacks
09:05he was not asked to just pin his ears back and rush he was asked to play two gaps so
09:08he's like more just
09:08kind of setting the edge you know keep an eye gap integrity things like that so if you want him
09:13to rush
09:13the physical tools a lot of people think he can they they're it's projecting out a little bit
09:17though it's a little like mozzie i mean mozzie wasn't an edge but they're like well mozzie wasn't
09:21asked to do that but we think he can develop pass rush because of the traits and then he didn't
09:24falk would be that but he should be somebody who should be a competent run defender immediately and
09:33then could be a powerful edge setter in a three down lineman look um avion terrell the cornerback
09:40from clemson that's uh aj terrell's brother uh akeem mesador edge rusher miami cj allen linebacker
09:46georgia dylan thenaman safety oregon uh colton hood cornerback tennessee cash is how the defensive
09:52end from texas a&m emmanuel mcneil warren the safety from toledo i would hate that pick would
09:57not like it that is a strong safety who i don't want doing anything in coverage really tj parker
10:02edge rusher from clemson has jalen thompson stopped you from doing anything at safety no because
10:07jalen thompson they're going to be so multiple and use so many different hybrid looks like he
10:10can't you still need guys in the secondary probably uh zion young edge rusher from missouri so that's
10:16your top 20 right there that he lists the projection i had last week i tweeted this that if you
10:21asked me
10:22today like what direction are they going to go i had said that i thought it would be reuben bain
10:28at 12
10:29from miami and then colton hood the cornerback from tennessee at 20 so colton hood to me is
10:37very similar in skill set and things to what quinion mitchell does so i think that that would
10:42be a a steady pick that i could definitely see christian parker do i mean we've i heard stuff i
10:48think you guys were around for some of it while we're in it but i mean i heard multiple times
10:52how
10:52people were really impressed with colton hood when he interviewed with the cowboys that they thought he
10:56was really really good um but if i told you you said that your dream is sunny styles and um
11:02who was
11:03the other one uh delay you're you're a bain fan though aren't you yes so if i tell you i'm
11:08gonna
11:08put bain in here and then i get a quinion mitchell style corner yeah that would be that you'd be
11:12more
11:12over that than delaying and styles at that point or do you just say i need a linebacker more than
11:17i
11:17need another pass rusher and stuff how much better is you know bain versus styles give me the give me
11:25better player i'm not doing that for need yeah i think styles is probably a little better more i
11:30think most everybody else would say bain's better i got the bain value though at the end styles could
11:35play all over styles can do anything you want i mean he's literally a former safety he could play
11:39inside linebacker he could probably rush off the edge he can do anything yeah no i would be in the
11:43room and i'm say all right 10 people who's the better player and if seven say you know one name
11:50that's who i'm taking i'm not taking styles because i need linebacker if seven say bain's going to be
11:54better and i've gotten gary and they do something else even at dn that's mid um no i'm getting the
12:02better are you factoring it would you factor in this scenario positional value at all when you're
12:07worried when you would are you sure i prefer to get the dn are you just taking whoever the better
12:12i mean i'd have to have seven people raise their hand that styles is better if six people raise
12:18their hand that styles is better i'm taking the dn does bain azaraku and gary sound to you like
12:24that's a competent pass rush for this year and i think that very well could end up being the
12:29pass rush collection they walk into the season with below the belt
