Shan, RJ, and Bobby went Inside The Star to take a look at the latest draft buzz, focusing mainly on reports from multiple analysts who have the Cowboys trading up to draft Sonny Styles. They reacted to the potential trade compensation, why some believe Dallas could stay put at 12, and more.
Transcript
00:00So we have Dane Brugler, Mel Kuyper, and Todd McShay all saying the same thing.
00:07That the Cowboys move up to six to draft Sonny Stiles.
00:12Now, here's the McShay compensation.
00:14You give up 12.
00:16You don't have to give up 20, Ralph.
00:18You give up 92, which is the Dorrance Armstrong third.
00:24And next year's second round pick.
00:27Okay?
00:28So 12.92 and next year's second.
00:31Here's what McShay says.
00:32Christian Parker covets athleticism and intelligence and linebacker for his scheme.
00:37And Stiles checks both.
00:39Former safety measured 6'5", 244, and still ran the fastest 40.
00:44Tied with Arvel Reese.
00:46The fastest 10-yard split.
00:48Tied with, is it, Obi-Azar?
00:51Nnamdi what?
00:52No, not Osama.
00:54Different.
00:55Yeah, Obi-Azar.
00:56There's like three different definitions I've heard.
00:58While also posting the top broad jump and setting a record for players 6'4 or taller with a 43
01:05.5 inch vert since 03.
01:08Beyond the off-the-charts testing, Stiles is widely regarded as one of the smartest players in the draft.
01:14One executive told me he'll run a company when his football days are over.
01:20He should step in and improve the football IQ of this defense and help clean up the play at the
01:25second and third levels.
01:26If there's any question about the value in trading up for an off-ball linebacker, just look at what the
01:31Eagles did, where Christian Parker was, last year.
01:35Fangio and CP moved up for Jahad Campbell, and his impact showed up immediately.
01:42To be fair, Jalen Smith owned a company after his playing career was over, too.
01:46Did he own it, or was he supposed to?
01:48Did we check that out?
01:49I'll see.
01:49Clear eye view.
01:49Clear eye.
01:50Clear eye.
01:51Whatever it is.
01:51Yeah.
01:53Clear eye view.
01:53It wasn't so much.
01:54He could see it clearly.
01:55He just couldn't always read and react to it.
01:58Yeah, the eyeglass company.
02:00So, number 12, their third-round pick, and then a two for next year.
02:06Yes.
02:10Yeah, I mean, look, my main goal is to go with two firsts in this one, and then that would
02:14allow me to do that.
02:15You still only get two picks in the top, now 100, which kind of stinks.
02:20Yeah, I think we talked into that.
02:22But Dane Brugler was asked on All-City, are you hearing or thinking that the Cowboys move up for Styles?
02:31I think a little bit of both, I guess.
02:33I mean, it's something that when you look at, because as much as mock drafts get mocked, this is exactly
02:40what NFL teams are doing right now, right?
02:42They are looking at all the scenarios.
02:44They are going through the possibilities.
02:46It makes sense to you.
02:48I think a little bit of both, I guess.
02:51I mean, it's something that when you look at, because as much as mock drafts get mocked, this is exactly
02:58what NFL teams are doing right now, right?
03:00They are looking at all the scenarios.
03:01They are going through the possibilities and saying, okay, well, this happens, this happens.
03:06And something that is talked about is who's the aggressive team this year?
03:11Who's going to go up into the top 10 in a somewhat lighter class?
03:17Like, we can say that, right?
03:18Not just the quarterbacks, but overall, it's a lighter top 10 than relative to other years.
03:23But who could be that aggressive team?
03:25And the Cowboys make sense, not only because they have the draft capital to do it, but this is a
03:30win-now window.
03:31And we know they need to get better on defense.
03:33And this is a, in terms of the top tier of prospects in this draft, there is a chance, probably
03:40a likely chance, they get wiped out of those guys.
03:44And so it just comes down to where do the Cowboys feel at number 12?
03:47If they get wiped out of, you know, Reuben Bain and the three Ohio State defenders and Mansoor Delane, what
03:55is that plan B?
03:56Do they have somebody ready to go, whether that's Dylan Thienemann from Oregon, Akeem Mezador, Keldrick Falk, whoever that is,
04:04do they feel good enough about that player at 12?
04:07Or do they feel the need to, hey, let's go get aggressive, go get our guy?
04:12And I think Sonny Stiles makes sense as a guy to go get, especially for this team.
04:16When you think about the Christian Parker defense, you think about if they played a game tomorrow, who's wearing the
04:21green dot?
04:23So, in watching, in being a YouTube, I'm not a Twitter scout, I'm a YouTube scout.
04:29Ten minutes, and I make my decision in ten minutes, giving myself an out in case I'm wrong.
04:35I talked about it yesterday, and I think this is why Broadus is going to love 720, that I was
04:40not blown away by, I was hoping for more.
04:44After reading all the things that McShay recapped from the Combine, I was looking for some LeVar Arrington, Jadavion Clowney
04:52-type explosive crazy college highlights.
04:55The one area in which I'll give, and I'll say, okay, you want to move up for him, go ahead
04:59and do it,
04:59is if you can tell me that he will coordinate and run everything like Caleb Downs is supposed to do.
05:05And McShay did include in that the brainpower, the leadership, all of that is there for Stiles, which I love.
05:13Checks all those boxes, and is a guy who's got, you know, the ridiculous athleticism, fresh at the position,
05:20a lot of it's projection that he's going to continue to grow as a player.
05:24But, I mean, it's something where the other, like, I think push or focus being on him is also about
05:34what's behind him at that position,
05:36which is, I think most NFL teams would say, not another first-round linebacker.
05:43I don't think anybody else would have anybody other than Stiles.
05:46Maybe there's a couple that would say, oh, we've got, you know, C.J. Allen in the first round.
05:50I would, I've got C.J. Allen in the first round.
05:52I like him like that.
05:53But I don't know that teams would say there's definitely a first-round linebacker outside of Sonny Stiles.
06:01Charles Robinson.
06:01Listen, give us a recap of who he is.
06:05Charles is a, I'm trying to think of, like, the best term for him.
06:08He's sort of like an investigative journalist for the NFL.
06:12Not on the, who's our ESPN, Don Van Atta.
06:15Not on the Don Van Atta level.
06:17But definitely is more about, let me write the story of the investigation of how something came to be and
06:25tell that story.
06:26So, really well connected, really, really great storyteller and somebody who I think is, it's always important to listen to
06:32some of the things that he says.
06:33In regards to the Cowboys as well.
06:35In regards to everybody, but yeah, definitely the Cowboys too.
06:37He's been on top of some Cowboy stuff.
06:39So, everyone this week is saying, they're moving up, move up, move up, Charles Robinson, pump the brakes.
06:48Rob, are you buying the boys going from 12 to 6?
06:51No, I'm not.
06:52And I'm glad you checked in with Dallas because when I was doing the all-juice team stuff, I talked
06:55to someone in Dallas and I did not sense.
06:59Like, I felt like those two first-round picks, they feel like they can get contributing players.
07:06Like, now they feel contributing players.
07:08They feel good about getting players who might not be instantaneous starters, but can come in immediately and contribute to
07:16the 20-26 team.
07:17And that's what they need.
07:18They need more players, particularly defensively.
07:21So, there is Charles pumping the brakes on the Inside Coverage podcast.
07:26Choppy, I'm going to ask you to pick who you want to believe.
07:32And Bobby, I'm going to ask you who you do believe.
07:37Everyone's saying, move up.
07:40Charles Robinson's saying, I don't think it's happening.
07:42Choppy, you start off.
07:43Oh, I want to believe Charles Robinson.
07:47Because I want to go further than that.
07:48I want to trade down.
07:50Like, if I could, they've got three top 100 picks.
07:53If I could walk away with five top 100 picks, you know, I'm fine with that.
07:58You know, if the Jets are willing to come up from 16, because they've got multiple firsts and they've got
08:03some capital, let's go.
08:05You know, if Detroit at 17 is willing to come on up, let's go to Minnesota.
08:10If any of these teams wants to come on up, I'm open for business here.
08:14And then at 20, you know, whether you want to move up, whether you want to move back for 20
08:20or not, I mean, you don't have to.
08:22I would like to move up, especially if the board falls the way that they're saying.
08:26If the lane's gone and, you know, styles and downs and all these guys are gone, you know, moving down
08:32probably isn't the worst idea.
08:34It's probably not the worst idea anyway.
08:36Who do you believe, Bob?
08:42Um, Charles, I guess.
08:44Uh, so here's the thing.
08:46I was listening to Gbag yesterday.
08:48They were talking about trade-up scenarios.
08:50And yeah, they were.
08:51Eric was, Eric was being a little conspiracy minded.
08:56Maybe one would say Eric, Eric of all people, Eric may be buying into some conspiracies, but it doesn't, it's,
09:02it's not the most absurd thing, which Eric goes.
09:04He's like, I think we're getting ball sacked here.
09:07He says, I think if you look at it, he's like, think about this.
09:09He's like, we're eight days out and everybody just knows exactly what they're going to do.
09:13Yeah.
09:13He's like, why does everybody in the world seem to know what they're going to do eight days out?
09:17That feels like not legitimate to me.
09:19So he's like, I don't know.
09:20He's like, my antennas are just up.
09:22Here's the thing.
09:23I think they're going to enter the draft and just say, we're just going to watch.
09:26We're going to watch.
09:27Yeah, they'll wait for a phone.
09:28And we'll, no, I don't even think that.
09:29I think they're going to watch and they're going to see how stuff goes and they'll go, we'll react to
09:32whatever's ahead of us.
09:33Well, you can't wait and watch for Reese or Bailey.
09:35No, but here's, here's what I think you're watching for.
09:38I just, so I don't think Reese or Bailey, I don't think they go up to three.
09:40I just don't think they have the capital for it, but let's say, let's say, they just don't want to
09:45spend it.
09:46No, they don't.
09:47They don't really have the capital next year.
09:48I mean, you just, you, yeah, you would have to sacrifice everything you have on day one and more into
09:54that.
09:54They just, they don't have resources to do that.
09:56Um, I mean, but to Josh's point, they do, but they don't, they do in the sense that Mike Dick
10:01had their entire draft to trade for Ricky Williams and he did,
10:04but no reasonable human being would do it.
10:06These are the, if the, what if this is the top 10?
10:09Mike had tea time.
10:10He's like, I'm not doing this.
10:11I don't think this is absurd.
10:13The Raiders take Mendoza.
10:14The Jets take Arvel Reese, which yesterday they canceled their 30 visit with David Bailey.
10:20Apparently Arizona takes David Bailey.
10:23Titans then take Jeremiah Love who they've been connected to.
10:26The Giants are a big pivot point in there.
10:28The Giants at five.
10:29What if they take Francis Malino?
10:31They do need offensive line.
10:32There are people who think the Giants could be in there.
10:34Okay.
10:35Well, Cleveland has been talked about as being really big on Spencer Fano.
10:38Okay.
10:38Now we're at Washington.
10:39They would take Carnell Tate in that instance.
10:41If Love's off the board, they would take Tate.
10:44Okay.
10:44Well, you got New Orleans who wants a pass rusher Bain.
10:47And then you've got Kansas city.
10:49Who's been on Jordan Tyson.
10:50Now you get to Cincinnati and Miami ahead of you and delaying styles and downs are still
10:55on the board.
10:56Three players with two picks to go.
10:58I don't think it's, I don't know that it's definitely, it plays out that way, but I don't
11:03think that's ridiculous to think it could happen that way.
11:06And if it happens that way, Dallas would watch the board and go, we're not moving.
11:09Why would we sacrifice that 20th pick knowing one of those three, you said Bain, delaying
11:15downs, delaying styles, downs could all like, I think, I don't think it's impossible to
11:20think that as pick 10 rolls around and you're two out, that those three are there.
11:24And I think those are the three that they would really be focusing on.
11:28That's your dream scenario.
11:29Dream scenario.
11:30And you know, and that way, I mean, you don't have to, obviously at that point, you know,
11:35trading down is like, all right, it wouldn't have to do that.
11:37But as of today, I think they end up with Caleb downs.
11:41As of what?
11:42As of today, I think they end up with Caleb downs.
11:45You know what?
11:45Just don't.
11:47Stop.
11:48I don't want to hear it.
11:49I don't want to hear it.
11:50As long as it's not that Sonny Stiles.
11:51Am I right, Brian?
11:52I don't want to hear it.
11:54I don't want to get excited.
11:56I don't want to hear it.
11:58Inside the Star.
