00:30Hey guys, welcome back to Japan, this is once again your host of the game and in today's
00:38video I'm going to be doing a game review this time, alright?
00:43So I'm going to be switching the gears a little bit and talking about a game review.
00:47Now this game though, it's been out for quite a while, it's so long in fact that it's recently
00:55celebrated its 20th anniversary, today I'm going to be reviewing the first Max Payne game,
01:01known as a classic in the FPS shooting genre.
01:06Ok, now this game, like bruh, this game was on a hard level to be honest with it, like
01:14I said this is from 2001.
01:18But anyways, outside that, this game, Max Payne, ok, now aside from being a shooter, it's
01:31a Norse fiction style movie, you know like those type like, think, like The Godfather or Scarpus,
01:44like in that sort of like, theme, you know.
01:48Although, I will admit, ok, I don't really have to like, describe this game that much because
01:53this game has been out for so long and it's an OG in the game industry to be honest.
01:59But some of you newbies may need a bit of a catch up on this, ok?
02:04Now the game takes place around the former NYPD detective, Max Payne, obviously you know
02:11he's a guy he plays as, right?
02:14And the whole gist of it is, they introduce you to his character at the beginning, his family
02:19or whatever.
02:20Then he calls on his case and comes back.
02:23And finally his family gets killed and now he has to go investigate the murder of his family,
02:30while also investigating a drug trafficking case involving mysterious new designer,
02:39called Valkyr, ok, now while doing, sorry, and this is what makes the game really special,
02:47this story, what makes the story really worth it, is while you're doing this, you get caught
02:54up in this bigger grander scheme, this complex conspiracy involving like these bigger crime
03:06lords, the secret society and even these military, and you see all this stuff that comes out, right?
03:17And all this, while the story simply starts off as a simple murder case of someone's own family
03:24and, you know, a drug trafficking case, and it slowly spirals out into this whole stuff that goes on.
03:32A lot of crazy stuff happens, and it's so beautiful to watch, you know, going from,
03:39there's a small thing right here, to this guy's personal life, to this whole thing that goes beyond just his city, right?
03:49It goes all into the whole world, to be honest.
03:53And, it's very entertaining to be honest.
03:57The other thing that took me on as well was, the way the game tells the story, ok?
04:02It uses, I just saw a gritty, painted sort of panels, you know, graphic novels, comic book style,
04:14to tell the story, and progress the story forward in between the game, right?
04:19You have these comic book panels, telling you, ok, this is what's going on, and they look well, you know?
04:27It's, and to me, I think it's actually more, better suited than cinematic cutscenes,
04:33because it adds a sort of like, more gritty, more grounded, um, take to telling the story,
04:41rather than some high visualized, very high rendered cutscenes.
04:47The gameplay in this game, because this is where the game really tends to work a lot for me,
04:53and, the, the whole gun aspect of the game, you have a lot of guns to use, and a lot of ammo,
04:58not gonna lie, um, it was very hard for me to, you know, pick and choose which gun to use during my battles,
05:06because, there's so much of them, you know?
05:09And, you, sometimes you want to make sure to try and use all the guns,
05:13and a lot of times, some of them get put in the back burner,
05:16and, I will say my standout is the dual parameters,
05:19even though I did end up needing to use some of the other stronger guns later.
05:23The dual barriers is basically my go-to.
05:25Then there's also, the, the combat side, right?
05:29Now, the thing is, the, the characters, you can't really hit them much, you know,
05:34when you can use, like, the melee weapons, you have the bat or whatever, or the co-wap.
05:38It's very range, um, it's very limited, right?
05:42Because it's an old game, you know, it's more of the basics in terms of movements,
05:47and that type of stuff, you know?
05:49You get your jump, you get your run,
05:51and you, then you also get your arm dash,
05:54which, isn't really all that much.
05:57And then there's the bullet time effect, okay?
06:00Which is supposed to be, like, a standout feature,
06:03because this was the first game to actually utilize it, right?
06:08But, in the game, the effect wasn't really all that for me.
06:14I'm not gonna lie, I, I used it several times during the game, and...
06:19Well, as I was using it, eh, it was cool to look at,
06:24but it wasn't really, like, useful, like, practically,
06:27in terms of, like, dodging, attacks, or, you know, all that stuff like that.
06:31You know, it was just more of, like, a cool-to-look-at feature
06:35rather than a practical, useful feature, in my opinion.
06:39This game, the voice acting, it was pretty damn good.
06:44This is about as good as you can get for voice acting.
06:47The soundtrack is probably the strongest aspect
06:50in terms of the technical stuff in this game.
06:52You know, with how well the atmosphere was created from the, um,
06:56the themes, and some of the music.
06:59They had some really good orchestra music for a game this old.
07:03And, the graphics, well, to be honest, I can't really, like,
07:09think on, like, the graphics and the gameplay, because,
07:12again, this is games from 2001,
07:16and you have to look at it through the lens of a 2001 game during the PS2 era.
07:22You know, you can't look at it through the lens of a 2020, 2021 game
07:26during the PS4, PS5-ish era,
07:30because it would be unfair.
07:33And, all I can say is this game, it holds up, you know.
07:38Even though the gameplay itself, it does feel a bit wooden,
07:43because it's, you know, an old game,
07:46so the mechanic doesn't feel, like, up-to-date,
07:49because it's very dated.
07:52But, outside that, the game, I'd say it aged fine for a game that came out in 2001.
07:58You know, the only thing I said was good is you can get for a 20-year-old game,
08:03especially in this form, to be honest.
08:07Now, the thing I want to get to in terms of the detractors of the game,
08:12the storytelling is phenomenal, but it's also quite short.
08:16Like, this game, you can probably knock it out in, like,
08:19probably a day or so if you know exactly what you're doing.
08:23Although, the caveat is,
08:25most of the time you won't really know exactly what you're doing,
08:29especially with how some of the, um, levels are, you know.
08:33You have to, like, think a little bit more outside the box.
08:37You know, and that's kind of refreshing, right?
08:41Most games these days, they make the puzzles or the, like,
08:44the scenarios way too easy for you.
08:47You know, to avoid, like, people from, I don't know,
08:51like, complaining or trying to use a brain to get through the game.
08:54So, I admit, the game did that pretty well, you know.
08:58Um, the, some of the levels were actually pretty interesting.
09:03Some were actually pretty damn rough, to be honest.
09:06But yeah, overall, it was actually pretty good.
09:11You know, my only gripe with the story is that it wasn't really that long,
09:16but the gameplay for the story, it made it actually a longer game than,
09:22you know, a game that would originally have a story up this length.
09:27Okay, now, with all that being said, guys,
09:31overall, if I got the greatest game by the max pain, I would give it a 4.5.
09:41Okay, I'll give it a .5 extra, right? A full 4.5.
09:45It was actually worth it, 4.5 actually, to be honest, thinking about it.
09:50Okay, the game is, is good actually, it's very good.
09:57Very worth it, very worth the playthrough.
10:02But, it's just like a, you know, a usual, small story length or, you know, stuff in the gameplay.
10:10But, other than that, it's a very good game that's worth recommending.
10:15Especially in today's era, where people are, you know, kind of like, turned off by old games.
10:22I don't know, there's always online, and you want like, some more single player campaigns to go through.
10:28Pull up this game. I mean, it's classic FPS shooting stuff, and classic crime drama storytelling.
10:41With that being said, I also want to mention the reunion, right, and the 20th anniversary of this game,
10:49which was celebrated recently on, you know, the EEG channel for the game devs.
10:55You know, in epic fashion, as how you should do a reunion, and take a look at other studios.
11:04You know, it's just a reunion, it's not some sort of revival.
11:14Hey all you Max Payne fans out there, it's James McCaffrey.
11:18I just wanted to take a moment to say happy 20th birthday to Max Payne.
11:23Congrats to the whole original team involved in creating it.
11:28At Remedy, not many of us hear any more of that team.
11:33At 3D Realms, at Rockstar, the actors, everyone.
11:38If it weren't for all you fans, by the tens of millions, it would never become the iconic media sensation that it did,
11:46and continues to be.
11:48Even 20 years later, almost every day, I get messages from you over social media,
11:56on how important Max Payne is to you, how much you love it.
12:02Thank you. I don't think I can ever thank you enough.
12:07So thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
12:10For the occasion, I went rummaging in the basement of Remedy HQ, and I found this box, and in it, a familiar looking leather jacket.
12:23I wonder if I should try it all. Maybe I should.
12:28And on that note...
12:30Birthdays are like regrets. They just keep coming.
12:39Each one, a new scar that slows you down, and drags you closer to your grave.
12:51Happy birthday, Max Payne.
12:53That, that's very much appreciated. You don't really need to go this extra step to try and bring back the franchise.
13:06It was, this game was good where it was, and that's pretty much it.
13:12Right?
13:13So anyways guys, that pretty much sums it up there for my review.
13:17Max Payne. Good game. Very good game. Very great game.
13:24Not perfect, but it holds up very well from it's time to now.
13:29It's, I'd say it's aged well enough, in the sense that it's still an enjoyable experience.
13:35But that's just my take on it, however.
13:38Let me know what you think in the comment section down below about Max Payne, guys.
13:42Do you like it? Do you hate it? Have you even played it?
13:47Let me know in the comment section down below, and be sure to comment on my other videos.
13:50I guess I'll see you guys later.
