00:00hey guys welcome back in the places once again this is your host in the game
00:03and today's video gonna be doing it in another discussion today I'm gonna be
00:09talking about the recent Mortal Kombat movie and Hollywood string of failed
00:16attempts at making great adaptations of video games okay now when it comes to
00:24video game movies in general I have to say that Hollywood's whole approach to it
00:28has been somewhat similar to that of comic book films super hero films right
00:34minus the part where they actually got good because you know something that
00:40genre now before I get into why the Mortal Kombat movie field but I have to do a
00:49deep dive into whole history of video game adaptations and how I got to where this
00:55to day because that's going to be an important thing to mention okay right
01:00now just going back to the 90s we got a string of movies based on Williams but the
01:07only the Mortal Kombat ones stood out they weren't that good but the magic and
01:14audience at the time you know guilty pleasure might describe it and then you
01:19go up to the 2000s where we got another string of films that for better worlds
01:25were in the same you know from mediocre to down horrendous most notable was the
01:30tomb made of film which were regarded as guilty pleasures and you also had the
01:36racial evil films which was mediocre but it was enough for him to actually make
01:43sequels because they were cheap now let's go to 2010 but in just trying to get
01:50ramped up no game must become a global phenomenon taken over the box office making
01:55more money than movies right now here is where things get really amped up but first we got
02:02the Prince of Persia first big budget shot at a movie based on a video game and yet it
02:10turned out to be another flop mediocre movie and then we got another shitty
02:16take on the hitman game then 2016 came out and we got a picture of films that
02:23were pretty mediocre but ended up making a lot of bank with Warcraft being the
02:29gross even to this day there's still a pivotal moment because it showed that
02:34regardless of how bad I was movies based on these games were they were still
02:41entertaining enough to make money from general audiences so we still came
02:48mediocre to metix rampage another two made a film but was a reboot 2019 came on we
02:59actually got a slight change of peace with detective Pikachu just had to change the
03:06perception on video game movies I was being sure it wasn't a complete 180 you know from terrible to
03:14excellent but it was good enough to be considered great compared to the previous stuff that we've been
03:21seen coming out right and then we got the angry bird sequel which got better reviews
03:29than detective Pikachu although it ended up making a lot less money because advertising and lack of interest
03:36you know that sort of stuff but it's worth mentioning because it was a very positive review
03:42and now and then came Sonic which ended up being arguably the best one we got today thanks to some
03:49minor cosmetic changes on the daily by the studio listening to the fans for once and actually trying
03:58to make the film possible now this wasn't a complete 180 either it was just enough to make it considered
04:09great compared to other films you've been getting although the fans will end up liking it more so it has the best
04:19you know fan reception okay now after that you think that okay things are looking promising for the next set of video game movies that were slated to be coming out right we got all this shitty films and then we started getting less shitty films
04:37and then came monster hunter which is in my opinion two steps backward and for a plethora of reasons
05:02i don't really do a deep dive into that one because this is mostly about motor combat but that one was some real problems per se okay but people are still like you know optimistic because the motor combat trailer came out recently and they were like oh this actually looks like it's going to be pretty good it's rated
05:28so it looks like it looks like it looks like it looks like it looks like it looks like they're actually embracing the actual stuff from the game and that's always welcome when it comes to these sort of things but then the movie came out which was a while ago and it to put it lightly it was fairly
05:50uh mixed you know you look at the reviews and the audiences although it was leaning more on the positive side but it was still considered a disappointment for many nonetheless including myself
06:06and i want to suffice to say this right i'm not going to make this a review on the film itself and this is more of a discussion as to
06:18what went wrong as to what went wrong as in the film doing bad and why it's a problem moving forward okay and i'll start off by saying this there's a several reasons actually when it comes to the motor combat film feeling flopping and such
06:40the first being is that hollywood's view on video game films but they don't have to view them as legitimate forms of storytelling still sadly they still do the same thing as okay let's just grab this ip let's get a bunch of actors
07:02and throw some money and let's give it some time and put it out and see what you can do with it okay they still view this as nothing more than just a cash grab stuff despite the fact that even people from the game studio who work on the games were involved in the production of the movie
07:26as for plenty of the movie as for plenty of other video games in the past the studios was involved with the um film company making the game the movie and still end up making the same mistakes because the problem is the writers the producers the actual hands-on crew that works on films that are actually experts in comes to the making these movies they still do not beat them as legitimate forms of storytelling
07:56they just view them they just view them as another ip slot to their stake and just try to make money off of and that was clearly noticeable here um the next progress to why this movie failed i think this is one of the more main reasons is the approach they use okay this approach they use okay this approach they use when it comes to a motor combat is their typical
08:26you know original story you know original story sort of what was the template for superhero films being able to blew up in the early 2000s right you know sam maybe spider-man christopher nolan's batman even
08:44uh among several others including mostly the mcu films if you guys have been paying attention to those comic book films i know you'd
08:55get get the gist of how the formula works you know they introduce the storyline from the perspective of the hero you get to see how he starts off and all that stuff and the villain and that stuff yeah yeah yeah yeah right and it it works i would try to keep using it but here in the context of the mortal
09:19the combat film it doesn't work because for starters you can't have some guy origin story be at the center of this film right based on a ip like this because the mortal
09:35combat movie is based on a whole plethora of characters which when we have varying backstories varying um you know original stories going on with them
09:46but when we try to take one and put him at the center and you know it's based on him and all these other characters you're seeing it from his perspective going forward
09:57that origin story approach it sort of like put a lot of characters at the back burner particularly a lot that would be considered fan favorites right and that works when it comes to superhero films right but it doesn't work here because
10:14this is not a superhero film it's a movie only video game you know and it's about characters fighting
10:24you know and it's about characters fighting fighting stuff right and they had a whole tournament which by the way wasn't even
10:30thing in the movie they had a tease and set up for the sequel which goes to the point i made earlier as in all you doesn't view
10:40this as legitimate form of storytelling despite the richness in the law and the background and stuff that's going on they just view it as ip as you can just slap it on put some money behind it and have people just churn it out to make film and then set up a next movie set up a next movie and then try to see how they can make money off of it as i know they can't
11:09the cash grab money thing right this is something that has been repeated by hollywood in the past when it comes to warcraft another film that was
11:21arguably terrible despite having a lot of promise going into it when it came to the ip and you know the whole lore and characters in the background in that that it should have actually worked but it didn't work because
11:38they tried to do this whole original story approach and for the most part it it works when it comes to trying to join new viewers but it even needs a lot of people because most people do not recognize this when they play the game right they come into this they want to see the main stuff and in mortal kombat the main stuff is a tournament
12:06the main stuff is a tournament and the tournament was not in this movie although it will come in a sequel that is assumed they make the sequel and at that point the people will still be interested in seeing it and this brings me to my last point of why this movie failed it's not meant to be a movie
12:28hollywood has this mindset that like everything needs to become a movie not every book can easily become a movie not every video game can easily become a movie not every play can easily become a movie sometimes these stories of entertainment are in the proper form of media they're exactly where they need to be
12:44and that is okay right there are games out there that you know at best they're just games you know you can't make a movie on them you just leave them as a game especially when you look at these movies nowadays where it's like two hours capping you know they really ever go over two hours now because they don't risk being too long right
13:12and in these types of games and they're low on stretch which is very rich and very good storytelling
13:19you need a lot of long time to dive into it and actually you know stay interesting and keeping the audience and viewers into it and to me that's why it's better off to do it as a tv show
13:38which has actually been working for some the witch for example that tv show is actually doing good by the um fan reception it's already set for a second season so it's it shows that the tv show approach could actually be better suited right so yeah that pretty much sums up all the points i've been making here with the video game films and most of this is as to why more combat
14:06but a lot of the points i've made can also be applied to by the other films failed as well
14:13the warcraft hitman films and these other films that have premises and plots and these rules that make for great storytelling it just doesn't bode well when you translate it to film because of the constraint of the film
14:35of the constraint when it comes to making a movie and then the fact that hollywood's their whole take on it their whole view of it is pretty much like what i said at the beginning of the video the view on comic book films of the past before they actually start again good right i think that's the major thing that they have to fix when it comes to the video game film
15:00is that once you can do that then you can probably start to look at this and actually start getting actual legitimate films and not just you know okay entertaining movies from video games right you have to focus on the storytelling and the other points i made you can focus on that secondary to the storytelling
15:27otherwise we're just going to start settling with um more tv show adaptations for games which looks to be like the only reasonable approach for my opinion
15:39so yeah and that pretty much sums up the whole take on uh video game films in general and why hollywood keep failing at them
15:47then earlier last year i was optimistic thinking about it now looking at how things are and you know the string of films that they have coming out for next year
16:01you know hollywood's upcoming video game films i am having less and less optimism you know like the mistakes are going to have to be fixed from the top bottom as i listed them earlier
16:16earlier on and if they don't they're just gonna keep expecting the same shit right but that's just my whole take on this um let me know what you guys think in the comment section down below
16:30when it comes to these hollywood studios and their takes on video games um do you agree or do you disagree um let me know the comment section down below and be sure to check out my other videos and i guess i'll see you guys
16:45see you guys later
