00:03:41And today, of course, with us is another charming lady
00:03:46from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Acting ASP,
00:03:50Renee B. Keller from the Mounted Branch and K9 Unit.
00:03:54Welcome.
00:03:55Thank you for having me again.
00:03:57And good evening, Trinidad and Tobago.
00:03:58So, we're in that month of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service
00:04:05celebrating the 70th anniversary of women in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
00:04:12And as a woman in the service at a senior level,
00:04:17I just wanted to get an idea of your experience, what has evolved,
00:04:22who are some of the people that were your mentors
00:04:23and that inspired you along your journey to where you are now?
00:04:28Well, one of the things that I want to say is that
00:04:30I listened to some of the women who have contributed
00:04:32and speaking about the women who impacted their lives on maybe one or two.
00:04:37But for me, I had a tribe of women.
00:04:39I came from the Golan era, the Golan girls.
00:04:41So, I had Mom Samson, Brong.
00:04:44I have Mom Archie.
00:04:45I have Castaneda James.
00:04:47I have Amber the Noon.
00:04:49So, I had a tribe.
00:04:50I was fortunate enough to work or interact with these women.
00:04:52So, Glenda Jennings-Smith.
00:04:55So, for me, they created a safe space.
00:04:58They created a way, they charted a way forward
00:05:01and they allowed us to grow and develop.
00:05:04It had its dynamics.
00:05:05As you always know, there's always that environment
00:05:07when it comes to women supporting other women.
00:05:10But I think, in general, if they did not enter 70 years ago,
00:05:14you and I would not be having this conversation here today.
00:05:17So, they were bold enough to take the mantle
00:05:18and have continued to allow us to develop
00:05:22and hold a lot of leadership roles.
00:05:24Right now, I think we have the most women in leadership
00:05:27in the history of Trinidad and Tobago
00:05:28within the last, I'll take it, within the last four years.
00:05:31So, it shows that we have evolved
00:05:33and it shows how important that anywhere decisions are being made,
00:05:38that you have to allow the voices of women to be heard.
00:05:40What made you want to get into the Trinidad and Tobago police civil?
00:05:44Was it a push, a nudge, or it was just something
00:05:47that was in your innate ability to want to get into law enforcement?
00:05:52To be honest, I needed a job.
00:05:53I was a teenage parent.
00:05:55I had my son at 19.
00:05:56So, I had to find a job.
00:06:00And I worked at McDonald's.
00:06:02I worked at the casino.
00:06:03I was inspecting the casino as well.
00:06:05I was to the rank of doing that.
00:06:08And I needed some job security.
00:06:10Actually, I did not see being a police officer in my destiny.
00:06:15My friend saw it and she said,
00:06:17let's go and do it.
00:06:17She didn't get through and I got through
00:06:18and I've made it a career.
00:06:20Wow, that's, you know,
00:06:21and I'm sure there are some memorable moments in your career thus far
00:06:26and more to come.
00:06:27But what would you say when you got into the service,
00:06:31some of the things that really awed you
00:06:34and the persons or the female role models that you had?
00:06:39You called some, of course, who I also know,
00:06:43worked in the TTPS.
00:06:44But what was that particular moment or moment that stands out to you
00:06:48when you came into the service for the first time
00:06:50and had to be confronted with other senior women?
00:06:54And what were some of the messages that helped guide you through
00:06:57to where you are today?
00:06:58For me, well, the women I interacted with
00:07:01would have come from Eastern Division.
00:07:02I met, oh, I forgot to mention,
00:07:03Ma'am Shalera Hines.
00:07:05They were Gemma Watson, you know.
00:07:07And there in Eastern Division, what happens,
00:07:09even though it's the same scope of policing,
00:07:11somehow every division still operates
00:07:12and has its own culture.
00:07:14So in the East, that was considered like country police.
00:07:17At that time, it's not as developed as it is now.
00:07:19Like Sandy Grand is not as developed as it is now.
00:07:21Everywhere in Trinidad is kind of developed now.
00:07:23And they were able to nurture you
00:07:27and the impact that you had,
00:07:29especially in the community and schools,
00:07:30because that was the real role of women coming into the service,
00:07:34was really to deal with the children
00:07:35and to deal with women who may have been victims of crime.
00:07:40So with coming and meeting that
00:07:42and realize the impact to change lives,
00:07:45I started, I actually have a charity that we run,
00:07:48and whichever division I work in,
00:07:49I carry the charity with me,
00:07:51because we have to continuously find a way,
00:07:54when they say service, to serve with pride,
00:07:57we have to find a way to continuously interact with the community
00:08:00to change their lives.
00:08:02They need help,
00:08:02and sometimes they don't know how to get that help.
00:08:05So having that intimate relationship with a community
00:08:08and seeing them grow, the children grow in the community,
00:08:11and to save them from going down the road at Crime Act,
00:08:15I think that is where my impact as a woman is.
00:08:17And to know that I made that different,
00:08:19I have had parents come to me and say,
00:08:21Ms. Bain Keller, because of you,
00:08:22or children come up and say because of me.
00:08:24Matter of fact, somebody wrote that about me on social media,
00:08:27that because of what I did is why they are where they are today.
00:08:30And I think for me, if nothing else I do,
00:08:33if I make a change on one person,
00:08:34I think I've done a lot.
00:08:35That's truly inspirational, of course.
00:08:37And, you know, if you had a message to those young women out there
00:08:42who perhaps are part, well, in your kind of situation when you were younger
00:08:48or similar situations and they wanted to get into the TTPS,
00:08:54what would you tell them?
00:08:56One of the challenges I would say,
00:08:58I would tell them don't give up on their dream
00:09:00because I set the exam in 1995.
00:09:01I didn't get through until 1997.
00:09:04What is happening is that we have a lot more women qualifying
00:09:07to be police, to be, to enter the police service than men.
00:09:10So we have like a backlog.
00:09:11So sometimes you sit the exam this year
00:09:13and three, four years later, they may call you.
00:09:15So hold on to your dream.
00:09:16That's prosperity and you don't age out.
00:09:18I would say hold on to your dream.
00:09:19You have to educate yourself.
00:09:21And in this day and age where a woman could literally be anything,
00:09:24could have keep on her back and call herself superwoman,
00:09:26I would want them to take their time to understand
00:09:28how the world is evolving
00:09:31and not to just bug themselves down into a box of like,
00:09:35with me, I was a teenage pregnancy,
00:09:37so it kind of limits my options.
00:09:39But in today's age, I encourage women to educate themselves
00:09:43and to dream big, dream out of the box
00:09:45because now we have persons who are literally moving from Trinidad
00:09:48and all over the world.
00:09:50They can go internationally with it
00:09:52and expose yourself to as many positive things as you can
00:09:55and people.
00:09:56That's clearly a very inspirational message there to the young woman.
00:10:00And we want to also salute you
00:10:02as well as all these women in the Trinidad and Tobago police service
00:10:06for what you all do.
00:10:08And, you know, you all, you know,
00:10:10you put your life on the line at times for the public.
00:10:13People might take it for granted at times.
00:10:16And there's always this, you know,
00:10:18this discourse to say that, you know,
00:10:20the police don't do their work and so on.
00:10:22But I think we have to take six or one half dozen or the other
00:10:25when we look at things
00:10:26because some people don't realize
00:10:27some of the sacrifices that are made by the women
00:10:31and men of the Trinidad and Tobago police service.
00:10:33Well, funny you should say that.
00:10:35I got invited to our graduation this evening.
00:10:37It was a pioneer project under the commissioner of police,
00:10:39his blessing,
00:10:40where they held a wellness camp,
00:10:43a wellness camp for the officers,
00:10:45the sworn and unsworn officers' children.
00:10:47And I was telling one of the guests,
00:10:49because in the audience, Dr. Francis,
00:10:52that in my day,
00:10:54I actually had my children in the house
00:10:56and I am on the job
00:10:57and I'm calling you all inside.
00:10:59I'll ask the neighbor to try.
00:11:00You know, the laws are not as strict as it is
00:11:02with leaving children unsupervised
00:11:04and having a child watch a child back then.
00:11:06But I had to go to work
00:11:08and I had to earn a living
00:11:09and I could not afford a camp.
00:11:10So I want to commend and thanks.
00:11:12It was pioneered and launched by Miss Lancaster,
00:11:16Senior Soup Lancaster,
00:11:17and her team.
00:11:18I want to congratulate them.
00:11:19So they had all the civilian children,
00:11:21all the police officers' children
00:11:22who qualified to enter the camp
00:11:24and they actually gave them a safe place
00:11:26while the parents were allowed to work.
00:11:28And I think once parents believe,
00:11:30not believe,
00:11:31but know that their children are safe
00:11:32and they will also be educated
00:11:35and develop in their minds,
00:11:36I think it augurs well to the direction
00:11:38where our service is going.
00:11:40Truly amazing journey there,
00:11:42ESP Kellabin.
00:11:43And we, as I said,
00:11:45we at Beyond the Tape and Nicu
00:11:46really appreciate you
00:11:48and we salute you
00:11:49as well as the other senior officers.
00:11:50All right?
00:11:52Now, I know that in your job now,
00:11:54your present job in the Mountain Branch,
00:11:56one of the most important things
00:11:57that you all tend to
00:11:59is the preparations
00:12:01as it entails for Independence Day.
00:12:05Now, unfortunately, this year,
00:12:08we don't have that big parade
00:12:10that we would usually see
00:12:12at the Queen's Park Savannah,
00:12:14year in, year out,
00:12:15and then they would take to the streets
00:12:17along Port of Spain
00:12:20through, onto Tragridge Road,
00:12:22go down the,
00:12:23around the Roxy Roundabout,
00:12:24back up there,
00:12:25send James into the barracks.
00:12:27It's unfortunate
00:12:27where you see, you know,
00:12:29the lovely horses
00:12:30who live by the officers,
00:12:32yourself and others.
00:12:34And, you know,
00:12:36so let's walk,
00:12:37let's walk us through
00:12:37some of the things
00:12:38that you would usually would do
00:12:39to prepare for this parade
00:12:41and what we're seeing here.
00:12:43Well, that's horse Hannibal,
00:12:44the PC Hannibal.
00:12:45We actually give the horses
00:12:46their own regimental numbers.
00:12:48And that is his groom, Billy,
00:12:50and he's preparing him
00:12:51for me to ride,
00:12:52to be saddled up.
00:12:55We were going to do
00:12:56what we would,
00:12:57the drill that we would have been
00:12:58practicing for Independence Parade.
00:13:00So we're mad mad,
00:13:01but we're not too mad
00:13:03because it takes a toll
00:13:04on us as well.
00:13:05So, but we would have been happy
00:13:06to be part of the parade as usual.
00:13:09So what they're doing there
00:13:09is preparing my spills for me
00:13:11so that was our young trainee.
00:13:12We have new trainees
00:13:13that we have taken
00:13:14into the branch
00:13:15and they are now going
00:13:16to be mounted officers.
00:13:17So I was actually just showing him
00:13:18the spur
00:13:19and how it's supposed
00:13:21to be aligned on my boat.
00:13:22So I was just kind of guiding him
00:13:24as to how these spills.
00:13:26So what we do with those spills,
00:13:27it is a tool that we use
00:13:28to train the horse
00:13:30or to guide the horse
00:13:31in the direction
00:13:32that we want them
00:13:32or for the horse to behave.
00:13:34So it doesn't injure them
00:13:35or harm them in any way.
00:13:37If you look at the point
00:13:38that where I'm holding there
00:13:39is very dull,
00:13:40it's rounded,
00:13:40it's not pointed
00:13:41that it will jab him
00:13:42or stab him.
00:13:43So it's just like a little touch.
00:13:44You realize it's a dull point.
00:13:46So it's just a little touch
00:13:47so you know if to move forward
00:13:48to if he needs to come back,
00:13:50if he needs to dress back,
00:13:51if he needs to take paces
00:13:53to the left
00:13:53or paces to the right.
00:13:54So it's just a guide
00:13:55that we use.
00:13:56So we put it on
00:13:58so those are training boots.
00:14:00So I was just going out
00:14:01and preparing
00:14:01to go to saddle
00:14:02to mount the horse
00:14:03for us to go out on training.
00:14:06So when I saw it,
00:14:08I usually see it
00:14:09when sometimes
00:14:10I thought it was like
00:14:11to just make sure
00:14:12you guys keep that balance.
00:14:14What, the spurs?
00:14:15Yeah.
00:14:16On the boots?
00:14:16Yeah, on the sides.
00:14:17Like keep the balance on both sides.
00:14:19Right, well technically it is.
00:14:20It is actually.
00:14:21Yes, so you're not too wrong.
00:14:23Right.
00:14:23So it is as well.
00:14:25So it keeps what happens
00:14:26it also helps us
00:14:27to stay stable
00:14:28in the saddle.
00:14:29Correct.
00:14:31And to keep the balance
00:14:32of the saddle on either horse
00:14:33because remember
00:14:33it's on his back
00:14:34so we have to also
00:14:35have our posture
00:14:36to make sure
00:14:37that we don't put too much pressure
00:14:38and also have him uncomfortable.
00:14:40So the saddles are fit to the horses.
00:14:42So that is his saddle.
00:14:43So they're fitted
00:14:44based on the contour of his body.
00:14:46Correct.
00:14:47Okay.
00:14:47Yes.
00:14:47So what usually happens next?
00:14:50So I'm just mounting the horse
00:14:51and what we'll do
00:14:52we'll check and make sure
00:14:53that the saddle is on
00:14:54correctly and tight
00:14:55and that my stirrup
00:14:57is the correct length
00:14:58for my legs as well
00:14:59because you don't want
00:15:00your legs too pointed
00:15:02not pointed
00:15:04too bended
00:15:04so that it wouldn't allow you
00:15:06to be able to engage
00:15:07with the horse.
00:15:08So that's it basically
00:15:09that we
00:15:10what we would do
00:15:10is that
00:15:11I'm one of the senior officers
00:15:12now I really suppose
00:15:13they have me spoiled
00:15:14so really and truly
00:15:15it's supposed to be
00:15:15doing all this yourself.
00:15:16Right.
00:15:16But my team
00:15:17kind of have me a bit spoiled
00:15:18so they'll make the adjustments
00:15:19for me I'll tell them
00:15:20what I need adjusted
00:15:21and they'll make the adjustment.
00:15:23The other officers
00:15:23they would adjust
00:15:24their own
00:15:25the girt of the horse
00:15:26and the saddle itself
00:15:27and their stirrups.
00:15:28A quick question
00:15:29is it that
00:15:30I know
00:15:30this is not like
00:15:32other units
00:15:32you have to have
00:15:34how long do you
00:15:36train
00:15:37before you actually
00:15:38allow to mount a horse
00:15:39and be part of a patrol?
00:15:41It takes about
00:15:43seven to eight months
00:15:44and you will always
00:15:45have an instructor
00:15:46with you
00:15:47because even though
00:15:47I am trained
00:15:48I'm still considered
00:15:50a trainee
00:15:50because I'm not
00:15:51at an expert level
00:15:52so they will still
00:15:54carry me out
00:15:55with a trainee
00:15:56because I'm still
00:15:57going through the paces
00:15:58so I think
00:15:59an expert level
00:15:59could almost be
00:16:00ten years of riding.
00:16:01How long have you
00:16:03been riding now?
00:16:04One year.
00:16:06I'm riding all over.
00:16:08A lot of people
00:16:08think I'm
00:16:08because what I did
00:16:09is that
00:16:10while I was on vacation
00:16:11I took the opportunity
00:16:12to meet mounted officers
00:16:13in Jamaica
00:16:14in Barbados
00:16:15and I did a
00:16:16western style trail
00:16:17reenacting trail
00:16:18in Aruba.
00:16:19So while I was on vacation
00:16:20I took the opportunity
00:16:21to ride other horses
00:16:22for more experience
00:16:23to bring back to my team
00:16:24so that we could
00:16:24to see how they
00:16:25have engaged their
00:16:26their public
00:16:28or their community
00:16:28so that I can adjust
00:16:30and make changes
00:16:30that are positive for us.
00:16:33What's happening
00:16:34in this?
00:16:34Alright so now
00:16:35I'm taking command
00:16:36of the parade
00:16:37and I'm going
00:16:37so what we do
00:16:39is that I'm just
00:16:39telling them
00:16:40so this will give me
00:16:41a chance to account
00:16:42for how many officers
00:16:43are in the lineup
00:16:44so what they will do
00:16:46we also have to have
00:16:47stay in alignment
00:16:48just like how
00:16:48when you see marchers
00:16:50they stay in line formation
00:16:52so right
00:16:53so you see notice
00:16:53that all the horses
00:16:54more or less
00:16:55are in alignment there
00:16:56so what we're going to do
00:16:58so I'm just taking them
00:16:59through the paces
00:16:59to make sure
00:17:00that everybody's in alignment
00:17:01and I can see
00:17:03who accounted
00:17:03be able to account
00:17:04for everybody
00:17:05and the horses as well
00:17:06and this is what
00:17:08we'll do our morning prayer
00:17:09because we don't take
00:17:10for granted
00:17:11these are animals
00:17:12these are beasts
00:17:13they have minds
00:17:14and personalities
00:17:14of their own
00:17:15so what we do
00:17:16is we take the opportunity
00:17:17to say a prayer
00:17:18to discuss things
00:17:19that the agenda
00:17:20before we go outside
00:17:21and more or less
00:17:22to build our camaraderie
00:17:23and our team spirit
00:17:24so that we look out
00:17:25for each other
00:17:26while we're out there
00:17:26and the horses as well
00:17:28all right
00:17:28really some fascinating
00:17:30stuff there
00:17:31it is
00:17:31it is
00:17:32I actually have been
00:17:33and I visited
00:17:33the mountain branch
00:17:34you told me
00:17:35and I walked through
00:17:36with one of the gentlemen
00:17:36and he showed me the horses
00:17:38he told me
00:17:39what their routine is
00:17:41and so on
00:17:42and they get to go
00:17:42it's a lot
00:17:43and they're very smart
00:17:45and intelligent animals
00:17:46they are very smart
00:17:47no doubt
00:17:47but I'm always surprised
00:17:49at how intimidated
00:17:50people are by them
00:17:51because I mean
00:17:51they stand tall
00:17:52they're not used tall
00:17:53they're just very majestic
00:17:55but I remember
00:17:55once I told you
00:17:56that they're so majestic
00:17:57and powerful
00:17:58but yet they're very coward
00:17:59you can't just put up
00:18:00do anything
00:18:01out of the ordinary
00:18:02with them
00:18:03some of them are unmoved
00:18:04because we have horses
00:18:05that will actually
00:18:06if they stand too long
00:18:07they'll fall asleep on you
00:18:08so you always have
00:18:09each horse
00:18:10just like humans
00:18:11have their own personality
00:18:12but what we love
00:18:13about our job
00:18:14is when we go out there
00:18:16how the public
00:18:17look forward to seeing us
00:18:18and you are 10 times
00:18:20more likely to engage
00:18:21your officer
00:18:21handling a dog
00:18:23or on mountain back
00:18:24than on mobile
00:18:25so we get a lot
00:18:26of community engagement
00:18:27I guess there's just
00:18:29a little practice run here
00:18:31well we're heading
00:18:32to Mandela Park
00:18:33but we're using
00:18:33Mandela Park
00:18:34right now
00:18:35because our grounds
00:18:36under
00:18:36we have our grounds
00:18:37we have to get it
00:18:38under repair
00:18:38sometimes with the rain
00:18:40what it does
00:18:41is it reveals
00:18:41some of the sharp stones
00:18:42so it could injure
00:18:43the horse
00:18:43so we always
00:18:45one of the greatest
00:18:46things to us
00:18:46is to safeguard
00:18:47the horse
00:18:47so out of abundance
00:18:50of caution
00:18:50we're using the park
00:18:51temporarily
00:18:52some really fascinating
00:18:53stuff there
00:18:54alright
00:18:54so let's move on
00:18:56we'll have a lot more
00:18:57of that later
00:18:58so the Trinidad
00:19:00and Tobago Police Service
00:19:01issued a media release
00:19:02today
00:19:04a woman police constable
00:19:06charged with last knee
00:19:07by trick
00:19:07after a sting operation
00:19:09WPC
00:19:11Misty Mitchell
00:19:12was formally charged
00:19:14of the Carony Police Station
00:19:15by acting Sergeant Joe Field
00:19:16on yesterday's date
00:19:18just to put
00:19:19in a summary
00:19:20basically promising
00:19:22someone that she could
00:19:22actually fast track
00:19:23his FUL license
00:19:25and accepted
00:19:25a sum of close
00:19:27to $50,000
00:19:28I know ASP
00:19:30would want to chime in here
00:19:31well I can only chime in
00:19:33on so much
00:19:33I can update
00:19:34I can bring an update to you
00:19:35she was granted bail
00:19:36in the sum of $70,000
00:19:38at Ishikonas Magistrate Court
00:19:40and because it's under
00:19:42you have to allow due process
00:19:43yes
00:19:43but one of the things
00:19:44that I want to see
00:19:45coming out of that
00:19:47that charge
00:19:48is that
00:19:49I loved where
00:19:50my commissioner
00:19:50where he highlighted
00:19:51he said that
00:19:53Alistair Guevara
00:19:54he strongly condemned
00:19:55the actions
00:19:55even though
00:19:56she's innocent
00:19:57until
00:19:58proven guilty
00:20:00but what he wants
00:20:01to send the message
00:20:02is that
00:20:02the commissioner
00:20:03discretion in the issuance
00:20:05of firearm
00:20:05user license
00:20:06is not a commodity
00:20:07any attempt
00:20:08to compromise
00:20:09this process
00:20:10whether by members
00:20:11of the public
00:20:11or police officers
00:20:13within the ranks
00:20:14will be met with
00:20:14swift
00:20:15uncompromising action
00:20:17we do not flinch
00:20:18from investigating
00:20:19charging or prosecuting
00:20:20our own
00:20:21if you choose
00:20:22to barter integrity
00:20:23for greed
00:20:23understand this
00:20:25you risk not only
00:20:26your freedom
00:20:26but your career
00:20:28your reputation
00:20:28and your future
00:20:30so in other words
00:20:31he's urging
00:20:32our police officers
00:20:33myself included
00:20:34to do the right thing
00:20:35we took our oath
00:20:36to be honest
00:20:37to have integrity
00:20:38and we should uphold that
00:20:40yeah very strong message
00:20:41and of course
00:20:42there was also
00:20:44another media release
00:20:45and I was able
00:20:46to verify
00:20:46and the commissioner
00:20:47did also verify
00:20:48that three persons
00:20:49inclusive of a corporal
00:20:52were held yesterday
00:20:53under detention orders
00:20:54and also
00:20:55a senior prison officer
00:20:57was also among those
00:20:59that were held yesterday
00:21:00and another person
00:21:01of course
00:21:02and the commissioner
00:21:03did also send
00:21:04a strong message
00:21:05saying that
00:21:05if you are involved
00:21:07in any particular
00:21:08kind of crime
00:21:09or illicit activity
00:21:10your job as a police officer
00:21:13or a prison officer
00:21:14or whoever you might be
00:21:15in terms of law enforcement
00:21:17if you find out
00:21:18you are dealing something
00:21:19doing something illicit
00:21:20we're going to come for you
00:21:21and I agree
00:21:22we should
00:21:23because internally
00:21:23we need to clean up
00:21:24because we can't be fighting
00:21:25on the outside
00:21:26and internally
00:21:26we're harboring them
00:21:27as well
00:21:28and I show no empathy
00:21:30for any officers
00:21:31that chooses to go
00:21:32along that path
00:21:33none
00:21:33yeah
00:21:34alright
00:21:35so earlier today
00:21:37there was a fire
00:21:38in the Dabody area
00:21:39at Mausica Road
00:21:41here apparently
00:21:43we understand
00:21:44that
00:21:45one of the persons
00:21:47that occupied
00:21:47that dwelling
00:21:48had some mental issues
00:21:51and
00:21:51police are still trying
00:21:52to investigate
00:21:53whether or not
00:21:54that person
00:21:55may have
00:21:56been the cause
00:21:58of the fire
00:21:59starting
00:22:00and I think
00:22:02one person
00:22:03died in the fire
00:22:05I think
00:22:05the said person
00:22:07that
00:22:07would have
00:22:08started this fire
00:22:10well that's very unfortunate
00:22:13but one of the things
00:22:14that you know
00:22:14that we're having
00:22:15more and more conversations
00:22:16about mental health issues
00:22:17and the effect
00:22:18and the impact
00:22:18it even has
00:22:19on the community itself
00:22:20because
00:22:21if let's say
00:22:22that the fire
00:22:22was indeed started
00:22:23by him
00:22:24and I mean
00:22:24it's unfortunate
00:22:25and condolences
00:22:26to his family
00:22:27but it could have
00:22:27also gone to
00:22:28the neighboring houses
00:22:29and I want to come
00:22:31many fire services
00:22:31for preventing that
00:22:32it seems that
00:22:33they would have
00:22:33prevented it
00:22:34yes I see
00:22:35the flames
00:22:37looking at the roof
00:22:37there but I think
00:22:39they would have
00:22:39contained it
00:22:40as you said
00:22:41and you're seeing
00:22:41it's pretty breezy
00:22:42as well
00:22:42look how close
00:22:44the other houses
00:22:45yes you're seeing
00:22:46the trees
00:22:46in the background
00:22:47the wind is blowing
00:22:49and there's always
00:22:50that danger
00:22:50you have to move
00:22:51quickly
00:22:52because the wind
00:22:53can really send
00:22:54those flames
00:22:55across to other
00:22:58structures
00:22:58so you have to move
00:22:59quickly
00:23:00alright so
00:23:01we're going to
00:23:02take a look now
00:23:03at our state of
00:23:04emergency update
00:23:04it's day 36
00:23:06so
00:23:09number of

00:24:13ASP Kee and Bella
00:24:14Police is working
00:24:19No, my police are indeed working
00:24:21we were working before
00:24:22but as with the SOE
00:24:23we get a lot more powers
00:24:24that we can act with
00:24:26that we can action
00:24:28responsible
00:24:29of course
00:24:31there's no abuse of it
00:24:32one of the things
00:24:34that always takes me back
00:24:35when you read
00:24:35because I follow with you
00:24:36that molly
00:24:38we never really had
00:24:39every time you're seeing
00:24:40that we are getting
00:24:41more and more
00:24:42we really have to work harder
00:24:43to get it off the streets
00:24:44and for parents
00:24:45to have the conversation
00:24:46with the children
00:24:47not to engage
00:24:48in these dangerous drugs
00:24:49surely
00:24:50alright let's take a quick look
00:24:51now at our headlines
00:24:53I'm going to see you next time

00:28:54we have a video from Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Yulani Julius, I think it is?
00:29:02Correct. I believe it is.
00:29:13Hello all.
00:29:15I'm Yulani Julius, Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police.
00:29:19I joined the service on the 15th of January 1972 and retired on October 2012, having served 41 years.
00:29:31During my tenure in the service, I worked with some of the female pioneers who joined in 1955
00:29:37and who paved the way for female officers to be elevated from dealing with offenses related to women and children
00:29:44to taking their place alongside their male counterparts in every division, branch, and section of the service.
00:29:51Some even progressed to be in charge of divisions and branches,
00:29:55and two females to the top rank of the commission of police.
00:30:00Women police also pioneered with training the first batch of female defense force officers,
00:30:05as well as chaperoning the first batch of female firefighters.
00:30:09I am extremely proud of women's achievements and wish on this 70th anniversary
00:30:16to congratulate each and every one of you while urging you to continue building on the past achievement of those before you.
00:30:25Okay, Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Yulina Julius there.
00:30:38Surely an inspiration for you, ASP?
00:30:41Definitely. I didn't get the opportunity to work with her, but I have been in a lot of conferences with her.
00:30:47And mom, she was very high on ethics, and if memory serves me right,
00:30:53she would have been one of the persons that would have actually worked on us having an ethics policy.
00:30:58So the things that, little subtle things as you go in rank and you recognize the need,
00:31:03not just for women, but for men, because sometimes we're so focused on the women,
00:31:07we exclude our men, and it's a symbiotic relationship.
00:31:09Because remember, once our men achieve, our women achieve as well.
00:31:13And we need to continuously have that inclusion and yet still have diversity within the ranks.
00:31:21So mom would have definitely paved the way, and I think it would be remiss of me,
00:31:25if you would permit me, to give mom a salute and to tell her thank you.
00:31:29Mom, this salute is for you.
00:31:32Thank you so much for paving the way for me.
00:31:34So I definitely felt very empowered by that, Mark.
00:31:39Thank you so much.
00:31:40We have been saluting all these great women and their stories over the last couple of days,
00:31:44as you would have seen.
00:31:46Yes.
00:31:46ASP Pitt, Sergeant Ali, and so on.
00:31:50So it's really an inspiration for a lot of the young women who are looking on,
00:31:54who are trying to figure out a career path,
00:31:57and maybe if they so desire or want to get into the TTPS,
00:32:02just listen to these inspirational stories of these women
00:32:04who have really come a long way at a time where, you know,
00:32:08the women were in the minority.
00:32:10And as yesterday, now as ASP Pitt pointed out,
00:32:14there are a lot more women now in the ranks of the TTPS.
00:32:18You know, and that is...
00:32:20Yeah, it was very difficult to get into the ranks.
00:32:23Matter of fact, even if you even look at it worldwide,
00:32:25actually, I was having a conversation earlier with Jackie,
00:32:28that the UN still put out figures as to the structure in the corporate world
00:32:32as to women in leadership.
00:32:34But, I mean, we continue to shatter the gas ceiling,
00:32:36and we need to continue to show up,
00:32:38and we need to continue to have that representation,
00:32:40and that is most important.
00:32:41So for women like myself,
00:32:43take any mantle to move it forward in preparation to hand it over to someone else.
00:32:47And not just in the police service, I dare say,
00:32:49but across the board,
00:32:51all different types of professions,
00:32:53law enforcement, you know, banking,
00:32:56you name it, politics,
00:32:58even we have females at the helm in the political arena,
00:33:01the prime minister of our country,
00:33:03the opposition leader, the president.
00:33:06So it's quite a shining example for a lot of young women
00:33:09who want to look up and, you know,
00:33:12read about these women and read about their paths.
00:33:16Even ASP, Bain Keller, are very inspirational.
00:33:19Everybody starts off on a difficult path,
00:33:21but if you set your mind those goals,
00:33:25and you know you want to dream and dream big,
00:33:27you continue along that path,
00:33:29you're going to see the success.
00:33:30But sometimes, I think one thing too is that
00:33:32sometimes women come into a career,
00:33:34and we don't really give them the flowers they should.
00:33:37And I think mom kind of didn't say a lot of the things
00:33:41that, you know, she said.
00:33:42And if you'll permit me,
00:33:42so I want to talk about that,
00:33:44so that I can inspire other officers
00:33:45to understand that when they come in,
00:33:47and especially they get a leadership role,
00:33:49to try to make an impact,
00:33:51to leave a lasting change.
00:33:52So she was the first female officer
00:33:54to head the firearm section.
00:33:55We just talk about firearms.
00:33:56So she would have started that structure as a female
00:33:59when the first female was male-oriented and dominated.
00:34:03And she was one of the court prosecutors,
00:34:06both the Tunapuna and Arima Magistrate Court.
00:34:08And she would be proud now to know
00:34:10that we have so many more female prosecutors
00:34:12because of her.
00:34:13And also we have changed the system.
00:34:15You know, the court system has gone electronic.
00:34:17Now we're doing virtual court.
00:34:18And then we have,
00:34:19she was the senior SOAP in both Western
00:34:21and I believe it's Western Eastern Division.
00:34:25She was the senior WP.
00:34:26And as she spoke about it,
00:34:27who would have chaperoned the first firefighters?
00:34:30I told you,
00:34:31she worked about the moral and ethics squad and policy.
00:34:34And she was the ACP in both Northern and Eastern Division.
00:34:37And to reach ACP during that era
00:34:41would have been a hell of a feat
00:34:43because it was very difficult to be promoted
00:34:46as a woman through the ranks.
00:34:47Yeah, well, like I can imagine at that time,
00:34:49you know,
00:34:50they would have seen a lot more of the evolution
00:34:52because, you know,
00:34:53having, you know,
00:34:55trying to work within the framework
00:34:57of what they have been.
00:34:58Yeah, because they came in just for the juveniles
00:35:00and to deal with females.
00:35:02Correct.
00:35:02That's why, you know,
00:35:03and it would have been,
00:35:04their challenges would have been far greater
00:35:07now than what we have now, right?
00:35:09Yeah, it's because of them
00:35:10you would have had a sexual harassment policy.
00:35:13You would have had a place for women
00:35:15that you get women maternity leave
00:35:17and maternity grants,
00:35:18even paternity grants
00:35:19were things that we never had.
00:35:20So I told you that sometimes
00:35:21when we make a decision for women,
00:35:23we also have to make sure
00:35:24that we make decision for women.
00:35:26Right.
00:35:27Okay, we're going to take a short break
00:35:28and when we get back,
00:35:29we'll take your calls.
00:35:30Stay with us.
00:35:30You can tell from the crowd who's up next.

00:36:16My story is an alter story.
00:36:20I really don't know.
00:36:20I just care it was terrible.
00:36:22In between a year time,
00:36:23I did that level one.
00:36:24I completed the one.
00:36:26That was so,
00:36:27that was like a joke.
00:36:28In Alta for a long while,
00:36:29I'm not lying.
00:36:30In Alta,
00:36:30I jump out.
00:36:31I call me challenging.
00:36:32It was hard,
00:36:33but I fight still.
00:36:34I started feeling nice.
00:36:35I started feeling sweet about myself.
00:36:37Before Alta,
00:36:38I was so nervous,
00:36:39never understand a lot of things.
00:36:41Alta is a nice place to learn.
00:36:43Like if any student in this program,
00:36:46made a mistake,
00:36:47or the other student,
00:36:48will turn
00:36:49and help out that student.
00:36:52The teachers are very wonderful,
00:36:53which is one thing I love.
00:36:54The next thing I love about it,
00:36:55it's free.
00:36:56You can't study what person's making,
00:36:59the perception of person.
00:37:00You have to focus on what you want.
00:37:02I am enjoying every moment in Alta.
00:37:05Today now,
00:37:07I can read,
00:37:08I can write,
00:37:09I can spell.
00:37:11Get into Alta,
00:37:12so you can write your story.
00:37:13708-1990.

00:38:00Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
00:38:14I'm your host,
00:38:15Mark Bessand.
00:38:15Today,
00:38:16with ESP,
00:38:17Rene Bean Keller
00:38:18of the Mounted Branch
00:38:20and K9 Unit.
00:38:22And, of course,
00:38:23we have our favorite segment,
00:38:26Voice of the People in Chaguanas.
00:38:27Let's go.
00:38:30Do you think there's a correlation
00:38:58between poverty and crime?
00:39:01So, tell me,
00:39:03always.
00:39:05That was way back when,
00:39:06when my father born,
00:39:08I born in poverty.
00:39:10But I won't say I'm still in poverty
00:39:11because I don't even mean enough poverty.
00:39:15I live beyond my,
00:39:16I don't live beyond my means.
00:39:18Right.
00:39:19So, I mean,
00:39:19do you think there's a correlation
00:39:20between poverty and crime
00:39:21that people use poverty
00:39:23as an excuse to commit crime?
00:39:24Well, yes.
00:39:25What are your thoughts
00:39:27on school violence?
00:39:29Well,
00:39:30parents,
00:39:32home,
00:39:34your home,
00:39:35your home,
00:39:37how you are brought up?
00:39:41Prasan?
00:39:42Mm-hmm.
00:39:42Because many parents,
00:39:46I'm not perfect,
00:39:47nobody perfect.
00:39:49But we do not discipline
00:39:51our children
00:39:52like a long time ago.
00:39:54Yes.
00:39:55I must say.
00:39:57Yes.
00:39:58Would you say that
00:39:59schools need to play
00:40:01a part in crime prevention?
00:40:03To a certain point,
00:40:05yes.
00:40:05Mm-hmm.
00:40:05principal,
00:40:09teachers,
00:40:12but how much they're going to talk?
00:40:13Children,
00:40:14violent now.
00:40:16Mm-hmm.
00:40:16So, how much they will?
00:40:17I don't know what,
00:40:19it'd be on my
00:40:20comprehension,
00:40:21I don't know.
00:40:24Yes,
00:40:24it's a tough one.
00:40:26Would you say that,
00:40:27what would you say
00:40:28communities need to work together,
00:40:30how they can work together
00:40:31rather to reduce crime
00:40:32communities
00:40:34across the country?
00:40:35Well,
00:40:36just come together,
00:40:38neighborhood watch.
00:40:41But everybody
00:40:42is for themselves.
00:40:43Mm-hmm.
00:40:44Do you know?
00:40:45And you know?
00:40:45Yeah.
00:40:47Yeah,
00:40:48you smile, right?
00:40:50So,
00:40:51you feel safer
00:40:52at home
00:40:54when you're on the go,
00:40:56walking,
00:40:57working?
00:40:59Well,
00:41:00I always feel safe
00:41:01because I have
00:41:01back one.
00:41:03Mm-hmm.
00:41:04I pray to God.
00:41:05Yeah.
00:41:06Now,
00:41:06he might not do everything
00:41:07but you ought to help yourself.
00:41:09Be aware.
00:41:10Yes.
00:41:11Back one is the answer.
00:41:15Mm-hmm.
00:41:16Last question.
00:41:17What would you say
00:41:18makes persons gravitate
00:41:20towards a life of crime?
00:41:22What is their allure?
00:41:24What is their attraction to crime?
00:41:26Committing murders,
00:41:27robberies,
00:41:28extortions,
00:41:29kidnappings.
00:41:29Well,
00:41:32to be honest with you,
00:41:34I might not have
00:41:34many answers.
00:41:37But what I could tell you,
00:41:38the parents,
00:41:41I'll go back to the parents.
00:41:42Yeah.
00:41:43That is important.
00:41:44How you grew up.
00:41:47Right?
00:41:49People feel,
00:41:49everybody just want more.
00:41:51Mm-hmm.
00:41:53Never satisfy
00:41:54whatever they have.
00:41:56Do you know that?
00:41:58Yes, I am.
00:41:59Tell them of it.
00:41:59Are you aware?
00:42:00I am aware.
00:42:02Without you,
00:42:03it's like, eh?
00:42:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
00:42:05If I say anything
00:42:05that contradict whatever,
00:42:08no, no, I'm sorry.
00:42:09You're well within your opinion
00:42:10and your views.
00:42:12Well,
00:42:12everybody just perceives things differently.
00:42:14I'm not too intelligent.
00:42:16Mm-hmm.
00:42:17But I,
00:42:17I have the ability to know
00:42:21what is really going on.
00:42:23Yeah.
00:42:25Just stay safe,
00:42:26be aware,
00:42:29and according to you,
00:42:31watch around.
00:42:35Thank you so much.
00:42:36Do not fear anyone
00:42:37except God.
00:42:39Yes.
00:42:41Good advice.
00:42:48Voice of the people,
00:42:49ESV,
00:42:51being Keller there,
00:42:52you know,
00:42:52when you go to these places,
00:42:53you meet all different types of persons
00:42:56with different opinions,
00:42:58and it's really fascinating.
00:43:00But what I like, though,
00:43:01he brought back in spirituality.
00:43:04I love that he said
00:43:05that poverty,
00:43:06there's no correlation,
00:43:07that poverty has to take you
00:43:09down the part of crime.
00:43:10And it's the voice of the elder.
00:43:12You know,
00:43:12he said,
00:43:13put your spirituality,
00:43:14work hard.
00:43:15So,
00:43:15I love to actually,
00:43:16that said,
00:43:16Mark,
00:43:17I must commend you for that
00:43:18because I think that engagement
00:43:19as well,
00:43:19you get to hear
00:43:21how people view their community
00:43:22and what changes
00:43:23and what changes they would like.
00:43:24But what I would also like
00:43:25is for them,
00:43:26not just what changes,
00:43:27but what can they do
00:43:28to make the changes happen.
00:43:30Because we need the community support.
00:43:31We like interaction like that.
00:43:33We want them to tell us
00:43:34what the solutions are.
00:43:35Yeah,
00:43:36and that's why it's important
00:43:37to get the feedback
00:43:38of persons across Trinidad
00:43:40and Tobago
00:43:40so that even when you guys
00:43:42have these town meetings,
00:43:44it is a critical part of that,
00:43:47as you said,
00:43:48symbiotic relationship
00:43:49between the citizenry
00:43:51and the TTPS.
00:43:53And they need to know,
00:43:54you all need to know
00:43:55what are the problems faced
00:43:57in various areas,
00:43:58what they're suggesting,
00:44:00how you all can make it better.
00:44:02And you can only do that
00:44:03by that interaction with them
00:44:05and these platforms
00:44:06or these kinds of platforms
00:44:08so that you can better serve
00:44:10your clients and your customers
00:44:12as you are located.
00:44:13But one of the challenges,
00:44:14I would tell you,
00:44:15at the town meeting,
00:44:16sometimes they fix things
00:44:17that are not within our remit.
00:44:20And that is why we try
00:44:21to invite the councillors
00:44:22as well as the ministers
00:44:23so that they can have
00:44:24a better idea.
00:44:26Sometimes it's the lamppost
00:44:27in the area,
00:44:28it's the playground,
00:44:29it's unemployment,
00:44:29it is finding a form of employment
00:44:33or activities
00:44:33for the children,
00:44:34the school.
00:44:35So like for instance,
00:44:36one of the things
00:44:37about community centres
00:44:38in the area,
00:44:39we build the community centres
00:44:41but what community activities
00:44:42do we have outside
00:44:43of hosting weddings
00:44:44or even the same town meetings
00:44:46that we host.
00:44:47So when you listen to them,
00:44:49sometimes it's not
00:44:49within our remit,
00:44:51it's more like a social project
00:44:53that they need the funding for
00:44:55and they need the support
00:44:56from the stakeholders
00:44:57that can help.
00:44:58Yeah, you're quite right
00:45:00because I think
00:45:00there was a town meeting
00:45:03I believe yesterday
00:45:04and I saw one of the MPs
00:45:07on his Instagram page.
00:45:10He had, you know,
00:45:11he was sitting behind
00:45:12while the police were
00:45:13interacting with the public.
00:45:16So you're right,
00:45:17you need that kind of
00:45:18critical engagement
00:45:19across the board,
00:45:20not just the police
00:45:21but the MP for the area
00:45:24or other personnel
00:45:25who are actively involved
00:45:27in the community
00:45:28so you can better
00:45:28understand the problems
00:45:29that they face
00:45:30and these people
00:45:31feel more comfortable
00:45:32to come out
00:45:33and not just face the police
00:45:35like an interrogation
00:45:36and, you know,
00:45:37but you have other persons
00:45:38who understand
00:45:39the concerns
00:45:40that they're going
00:45:40to be raising
00:45:41to bring that logic,
00:45:42that rationale,
00:45:43that reasoning
00:45:44and that balance.
00:45:45But not just only that,
00:45:46when we have the town meetings
00:45:48we also have to set goals
00:45:49so that we can build
00:45:50that trust and confidence
00:45:51because we can't fix everything
00:45:52but there are medium,
00:45:54you know,
00:45:54there is these small,
00:45:55medium and long-term goals
00:45:57that we can start with
00:45:58so that we build
00:45:59that trust and confidence
00:46:00by delivering on
00:46:02some of the things
00:46:03that we promised
00:46:03but as I told you,
00:46:04some of the promises
00:46:05or things that they need
00:46:06to be delivered
00:46:07is not within the remittery police
00:46:08so that's why we need
00:46:09to have that continuous
00:46:10discussion of partnership
00:46:11and have any right stakeholders
00:46:13to deliver what they need.
00:46:14And that's why it's important
00:46:15that, you know,
00:46:17when you all see
00:46:18these town meetings
00:46:19across Trinidad and Tobago
00:46:20that the TTPS
00:46:22is advertising
00:46:23on their show
00:46:24and on their social media platforms
00:46:27and so on,
00:46:28it's very important
00:46:29that you as a citizen
00:46:30in that area,
00:46:31you might have
00:46:32a particular concern
00:46:33or you might have
00:46:33a suggestion
00:46:34to go out there
00:46:35and throw your voice
00:46:38out there
00:46:38so that the officers
00:46:39can listen,
00:46:40they can interact with you
00:46:42so that, you know,
00:46:43you are living in that area
00:46:45and you have suggestions
00:46:46that can make it
00:46:47a safer area
00:46:48more community engagement
00:46:50even
00:46:50all these things
00:46:51and as you said
00:46:52you touched on
00:46:53a very important aspect here
00:46:55it's about
00:46:55building that trust
00:46:57because we know
00:46:58for a long time
00:46:59the trust
00:47:00in the police service
00:47:01by the citizenry
00:47:02has waned considerably
00:47:04and that is
00:47:05a job that
00:47:06the TTPS
00:47:07is attempting
00:47:08to rebuild
00:47:08that trust
00:47:09and that accountability
00:47:11over the last year
00:47:12or two
00:47:13and I think
00:47:14it's important
00:47:14as you said
00:47:15that we get
00:47:16to that point
00:47:17where we have
00:47:18several citizens
00:47:20coming out
00:47:20because remember
00:47:20there was a town meeting
00:47:22in Portisbury
00:47:22a couple of weeks
00:47:23and no one turned out
00:47:25because you also have to look
00:47:29at the dynamics
00:47:30within a particular community
00:47:31as well
00:47:32because sometimes
00:47:34we as officers
00:47:34will go in
00:47:35and try to do things
00:47:36to enhance the community
00:47:37and they may
00:47:39come and destroy it
00:47:40and make it counterproductive
00:47:41they don't want that
00:47:42they don't want that
00:47:42I can give you
00:47:43an example
00:47:44of a homeschool
00:47:45that was started
00:47:46by officers
00:47:47and the community
00:47:48came and they destroyed
00:47:49the things
00:47:49that they put in place
00:47:51to start the homeschool
00:47:52let's start the homework school
00:47:53not homework school
00:47:54school
00:47:55there would have been
00:47:56a program
00:47:57that would have helped
00:47:57students after school
00:47:58and the community
00:48:00in itself
00:48:00so we also have
00:48:01the community
00:48:02also needs to take
00:48:03responsibility
00:48:04of what they want
00:48:06and where they want
00:48:07to see their community
00:48:08but I know
00:48:08there's a level of fear
00:48:09as you said
00:48:09because the trust
00:48:10and confidence
00:48:11has been eroded
00:48:12but not just
00:48:13with us alone
00:48:13within themselves
00:48:15so sometimes
00:48:16we have to find
00:48:17ways to gradually
00:48:18improve it
00:48:19we have to find
00:48:21maybe now
00:48:22we may have to do
00:48:23a virtual meeting
00:48:24voiceovers
00:48:25to give people
00:48:26an opportunity
00:48:27you know
00:48:28look at using
00:48:29the electronics
00:48:29so that we can give people
00:48:31you know
00:48:32a safe haven
00:48:32where they feel comfortable
00:48:34that they can speak out
00:48:35without being pointed
00:48:36out or targeted
00:48:37and make us
00:48:38give us an opportunity
00:48:39for their ideas
00:48:42or their issues
00:48:43to come to the forefront
00:48:44alright
00:48:45we're going to take
00:48:46a short break

00:51:27it's on
00:51:28this Saturday

00:51:31at the
00:51:32Twin City Community

00:51:38safety tips
00:51:38financial awareness
00:51:40crime tips
00:51:41the value of
00:51:42human intelligence
00:51:43vehicle theft
00:51:45and insurance
00:51:45coverage
00:51:46the psychology
00:51:48of the fear

00:51:49light refreshment
00:51:50refreshment
00:51:51sorry
00:51:51will be unsafe
00:51:52quite some
00:51:53interesting topics
00:51:54to cover
00:51:55ASP
00:51:56I like the
00:52:01value of
00:52:02human intelligence
00:52:02because one of
00:52:03the things that
00:52:04you see sometimes
00:52:05is how we
00:52:06interact with
00:52:06each other
00:52:07that we are
00:52:08unable to
00:52:08temper our
00:52:09temperament
00:52:10and you see
00:52:10a lot of
00:52:11fights that
00:52:12just triggered
00:52:12off
00:52:13such as the
00:52:13one that
00:52:14would have
00:52:14happened
00:52:14recently
00:52:15at the
00:52:15central
00:52:16I believe
00:52:17it was
00:52:17yes
00:52:17loss of
00:52:19life
00:52:19correct
00:52:19you know
00:52:21they attack
00:52:22the
00:52:22so having
00:52:23that level
00:52:23of emotional
00:52:24intelligence
00:52:25so that we
00:52:25could you
00:52:26know make
00:52:27a more
00:52:27informed decision
00:52:28on how I'm
00:52:28going to act
00:52:29or interact
00:52:29based on an
00:52:30event or
00:52:30occurrence
00:52:31that's an
00:52:32important thing
00:52:33and I hope
00:52:33people attend
00:52:34well we hope
00:52:35for that people
00:52:35attend
00:52:35you know it's
00:52:36really important
00:52:37that you take
00:52:38the time
00:52:39even if you
00:52:39go for an
00:52:40hour
00:52:40it's at
00:52:40three o'clock
00:52:41so if you
00:52:41it's on a
00:52:42Saturday
00:52:42if you
00:52:43you're done
00:52:43working around
00:52:44that time
00:52:45for those
00:52:45that work
00:52:46on a Saturday
00:52:46you can pop
00:52:47across there
00:52:48you know
00:52:49and just
00:52:49give your
00:52:50your inputs
00:52:51if need be
00:52:52you might
00:52:52be able
00:52:53to make
00:52:53a difference
00:52:53and it's
00:52:54free
00:52:54yeah
00:52:55and there's
00:52:56refreshments
00:52:56on sale
00:52:57correct
00:52:57all right
00:52:59so you know
00:53:00this is a
00:53:01video
00:53:01it's not
00:53:02local
00:53:03but it has
00:53:03been trending
00:53:04of course
00:53:04you know
00:53:05it's
00:53:06you never
00:53:06know
00:53:07what to
00:53:07expect
00:53:08where you
00:53:08might be
00:53:09at any
00:53:10given time
00:53:10and these
00:53:12are two
00:53:12food
00:53:12influencers
00:53:13they were
00:53:13filming
00:53:13themselves
00:53:14eating at
00:53:15a restaurant
00:53:15and this
00:53:16is what
00:53:16happened
00:53:17so can
00:53:23you imagine
00:53:24you're relishing
00:53:26a dish
00:53:26and then
00:53:27suddenly a
00:53:28car crashes
00:53:29into the
00:53:30restaurant
00:53:30that you
00:53:31are sitting
00:53:32near the
00:53:32window
00:53:33and I
00:53:35have to
00:53:35say
00:53:36they or
00:53:37him rather
00:53:38was extremely
00:53:40lucky
00:53:40that the
00:53:42car maybe
00:53:42would have
00:53:42swung and
00:53:43swiped
00:53:44not come
00:53:44plough into
00:53:45the restaurant
00:53:46because things
00:53:48might have been
00:53:49more severe
00:53:49Mark and this
00:53:50is a perfect
00:53:51example of when
00:53:52you're leaving
00:53:52home how much
00:53:54God grace and
00:53:54mercy is granted
00:53:55when you return
00:53:56home safely
00:53:57because and this
00:53:58happens more often
00:53:59than you would
00:54:00think because a
00:54:01lot of persons
00:54:01tend to in
00:54:02parking there is
00:54:03that medium
00:54:04stomp there and
00:54:05they tend to
00:54:05instead of
00:54:06sometimes they
00:54:07put it in
00:54:07reverse and
00:54:08they actually
00:54:08put it in
00:54:09drive and
00:54:10actually and
00:54:11this has
00:54:11happened several
00:54:12times here as
00:54:13well you know
00:54:13but not to
00:54:14enter into
00:54:15the car park
00:54:17in Pricemath
00:54:18and I believe
00:54:18it happened
00:54:18sometime in
00:54:19Port of Spain
00:54:20a while back
00:54:20it's not very
00:54:21prevalent here
00:54:22but they are
00:54:23very lucky
00:54:24honestly
00:54:24watching that
00:54:25trust me
00:54:26I mean when I
00:54:27saw it
00:54:27it is mind
00:54:28blowing
00:54:28and you could
00:54:29see he became
00:54:29disoriented
00:54:30because it
00:54:31happened
00:54:32not happening
00:54:33yeah it was
00:54:34confusing for me
00:54:35as well
00:54:36well thank
00:54:36God that
00:54:37they are alive
00:54:38and safe
00:54:39you know
00:54:40that was
00:54:40actually in
00:54:41Houston on
00:54:41August 17th
00:54:43as we said
00:54:43a couple
00:54:43days ago
00:54:44and we
00:54:45want to
00:54:45return to
00:54:46your good
00:54:47self at
00:54:48the Mandela
00:54:49Park
00:54:50where I
00:54:51know that
00:54:51you are
00:54:51going through
00:54:52the motions
00:54:53for the
00:54:54independence
00:54:54the celebrations
00:54:55which have
00:54:56now been
00:54:56cancelled but
00:54:57nevertheless
00:54:57let's take
00:54:58a look
00:54:58yes
00:54:59so you were
00:55:07telling me
00:55:07earlier about
00:55:08this exercise
00:55:10here in
00:55:11the Mandela
00:55:11Park
00:55:12so what
00:55:12we are
00:55:12doing here
00:55:13is that
00:55:14we warm
00:55:14up the
00:55:14horses
00:55:14just like
00:55:15a car
00:55:15you need
00:55:16to warm
00:55:16up the
00:55:16horses
00:55:16so what
00:55:17we do
00:55:17we take
00:55:17the horses
00:55:18through the
00:55:18pace
00:55:19where we
00:55:19will start
00:55:19the walking
00:55:20we will do
00:55:20walking exercise
00:55:21then we go
00:55:22into the
00:55:22trotting exercise
00:55:23because the
00:55:23trotting exercise
00:55:24is what
00:55:24will keep
00:55:25the momentum
00:55:25what we
00:55:26would use
00:55:26to keep
00:55:27the momentum
00:55:27on the
00:55:28parade
00:55:28so we
00:55:29actually
00:55:29pick up
00:55:29the president
00:55:30at the
00:55:30president's
00:55:31house
00:55:31we trot
00:55:31into the
00:55:32savannah
00:55:32then we
00:55:33would line
00:55:33up behind
00:55:34all the
00:55:34troops
00:55:34until it's
00:55:34our turn
00:55:35then we'll
00:55:36do our
00:55:36display
00:55:36and then
00:55:37we would
00:55:39transport
00:55:39the president
00:55:40or return
00:55:41her to
00:55:41her residence
00:55:42so here
00:55:43it is
00:55:44more or less
00:55:44that well
00:55:45I don't
00:55:45take the
00:55:45lead here
00:55:46as you
00:55:46recognize
00:55:47that even
00:55:47though I
00:55:48am the
00:55:48commander
00:55:49the more
00:55:51senior instructor
00:55:52or the
00:55:53drill instructor
00:55:54who would
00:55:54have been
00:55:54assigned this
00:55:55duty
00:55:55I believe
00:55:56on that
00:55:56day would
00:55:57have been
00:55:57sergeant
00:55:57philip
00:55:57what we
00:55:58do
00:55:59however
00:55:59what I
00:56:00try to
00:56:00do
00:56:01each day
00:56:01that I
00:56:02come out
00:56:02I try
00:56:02to ride
00:56:03with a
00:56:03different
00:56:03officer
00:56:04because it
00:56:05gives me
00:56:07an opportunity
00:56:07to build
00:56:08and bond
00:56:08with my
00:56:09officer
00:56:09and give
00:56:09the different
00:56:10horses as well
00:56:11an opportunity
00:56:11to build
00:56:12and bond
00:56:12with each
00:56:13other
00:56:13and I
00:56:14get to
00:56:14know them
00:56:14I get to
00:56:15know the
00:56:15business
00:56:15so you
00:56:15know it's
00:56:16a really
00:56:16good thing
00:56:16as a leader
00:56:17to kind
00:56:17of interact
00:56:18with your
00:56:18crew on a
00:56:19different
00:56:19informal level
00:56:20such as
00:56:21this
00:56:21so what
00:56:22we do
00:56:22is we
00:56:23try to
00:56:23pair
00:56:23the horses
00:56:24that will
00:56:24work well
00:56:25together
00:56:25so in
00:56:26this instance
00:56:26we were
00:56:26doing a
00:56:27new drill
00:56:28every year
00:56:28we try
00:56:28to we
00:56:29give the
00:56:30responsibility
00:56:31sometimes to
00:56:32somebody constable
00:56:33sometimes to
00:56:33the instructors
00:56:34to come up
00:56:34with a drill
00:56:35for independence
00:56:36so basically
00:56:39we are just
00:56:39going through
00:56:40the drill
00:56:40where the horses
00:56:41were
00:56:41I can't remember
00:56:43what the name
00:56:44of this one
00:56:44was
00:56:45right
00:56:45but more or
00:56:46less we were
00:56:46kind of
00:56:47interchanging
00:56:47so you
00:56:48one pass
00:56:49I pass
00:56:49that kind
00:56:50of
00:56:50right
00:56:50one in
00:56:51and out
00:56:52it was
00:56:52like
00:56:52coordination
00:56:52required
00:56:53of course
00:56:53it is
00:56:54because
00:56:54and you also
00:56:55have to keep
00:56:55the momentum
00:56:56of the
00:56:56trot
00:56:56you realize
00:56:57that each
00:56:57horse
00:56:58so we have
00:56:59the horses
00:56:59at a particular
00:57:00pace
00:57:00and we are
00:57:01taking the
00:57:01timing so that
00:57:02we have
00:57:02one in
00:57:03one out
00:57:03to cross
00:57:04and then
00:57:05on the day
00:57:06of the parade
00:57:07everybody being
00:57:07white so it's
00:57:08really a show
00:57:09piece
00:57:09it's one of the
00:57:10things that we
00:57:11actually look
00:57:11forward to
00:57:12to show
00:57:12our skill set
00:57:13average
00:57:14how long would
00:57:15you say you
00:57:16would spend
00:57:17sitting on that
00:57:17horse
00:57:18for that period
00:57:19of time
00:57:20for the
00:57:20independence
00:57:21well we
00:57:21start at
00:57:22around
00:57:22730
00:57:23we get
00:57:24about
00:57:244 hours
00:57:25wow
00:57:26about 4 hours
00:57:27sometimes you
00:57:29might be sore
00:57:30when you get
00:57:30off there
00:57:31of course
00:57:31you are sore
00:57:32of course
00:57:32actually last
00:57:33year for the
00:57:34first year
00:57:34we partnered
00:57:35with the
00:57:36police hospital
00:57:37and what I
00:57:37did is I
00:57:38created a list
00:57:38to make sure
00:57:39the officers
00:57:39got massages
00:57:40yes so that
00:57:41we because it
00:57:42takes a toll
00:57:43on your back
00:57:43it really does
00:57:44a lot
00:57:44well done
00:57:45alright I
00:57:46think we have
00:57:46our first
00:57:46caller on the
00:57:47line
00:57:47caller good
00:57:48evening welcome
00:57:48to be on the
00:57:49ship
00:57:49welcome sir
00:57:51I put on the
00:57:53tv about 10
00:57:54minutes ago
00:57:54I really don't
00:57:57know the topic
00:57:57but what I want
00:58:00to tell you
00:58:00where I live in
00:58:02St.
00:58:02France of
00:58:03Valley
00:58:03or the
00:58:03plannings
00:58:04it have a
00:58:05lady
00:58:05building number
00:58:065
00:58:06selling
00:58:07children and
00:58:08everybody
00:58:09scratch
00:58:10bums
00:58:10and that
00:58:11wouldn't
00:58:11for a long
00:58:12time
00:58:12it was
00:58:13was reported
00:58:14to the
00:58:14government
00:58:15police station
00:58:15and like
00:58:16they did
00:58:17nothing
00:58:18to come
00:58:19and verify
00:58:19the situation
00:58:20those things
00:58:22going off
00:58:23like bullets
00:58:23in the
00:58:24night
00:58:24okay so
00:58:26what I
00:58:26would do
00:58:26is I
00:58:27would allow
00:58:27Jackie to
00:58:27take your
00:58:28number
00:58:28off air
00:58:29and I
00:58:29would make
00:58:29some
00:58:29I'll have
00:58:30someone contact
00:58:30you for
00:58:31further
00:58:31information
00:58:31yeah that
00:58:34you know
00:58:35that law
00:58:36you know
00:58:37that's
00:58:37it's
00:58:37prohibited
00:58:38yes it is
00:58:38you know
00:58:40to be
00:58:40have that
00:58:41kind of
00:58:41paraphernal
00:58:41lying around
00:58:42and you're
00:58:42selling it
00:58:43still
00:58:43because you
00:58:44can cause
00:58:44serious harm
00:58:45and injury
00:58:45to persons
00:58:46there was
00:58:47an incident
00:58:48where somebody
00:58:49put it in
00:58:51somebody's
00:58:51back pants
00:58:52pocket
00:58:52and it
00:58:53exploded
00:58:53recently
00:58:54some time
00:58:55ago
00:58:55I remember
00:58:55reading
00:58:56it could have
00:58:56been about
00:58:57more than
00:58:57two three
00:58:58years ago
00:58:58but you know
00:58:59those are not
00:59:00things you want
00:59:01to play with
00:59:01even for
00:59:02children to
00:59:03be having
00:59:03in their
00:59:03possession
00:59:04and not
00:59:04just children
00:59:05as well
00:59:05it can
00:59:06just same
00:59:06fire hazard
00:59:07we were
00:59:07talking about
00:59:08and also
00:59:09the pets
00:59:09it causes
00:59:09harm and
00:59:10injury to
00:59:10the pets
00:59:10as well
00:59:11and the
00:59:11elderly
00:59:11persons
00:59:12so we
00:59:13definitely
00:59:13would look
00:59:13into it
00:59:14yes those
00:59:14loud noises
00:59:15emanated from
00:59:17those firecrackers
00:59:18can really
00:59:19cause you to
00:59:20jump at times
00:59:21of course
00:59:22that's why
00:59:23they had a
00:59:23ban on it
00:59:23especially in
00:59:24schools as well
00:59:25because what
00:59:25they would do
00:59:26the same thing
00:59:26try to put it
00:59:27in your book
00:59:27bag or under
00:59:29the school desk
00:59:30and it is
00:59:30very disruptive
00:59:31so I'll definitely
00:59:32look into it
00:59:33yes
00:59:34all right let's go
00:59:36back to some of
00:59:36the footage that we
00:59:38were dealing with
00:59:39here and you
00:59:39and you're leading
00:59:40now
00:59:40so last year I
00:59:42made history
00:59:42I was the first
00:59:43female with rank
00:59:45as a first FDO
00:59:46to lead a
00:59:47presidential parade
00:59:48so I'm leading
00:59:50so I'm leading
00:59:50here more or
00:59:50less I'm just
00:59:51taking them
00:59:51through the
00:59:52paces of the
00:59:52drill so I'm
00:59:53moving the
00:59:53horses forward
00:59:54right so from
00:59:55here is where
00:59:56more or less
00:59:57not more or less
00:59:58this is where we
00:59:58would give the
00:59:59salute to the
01:00:00president
01:00:00well they didn't
01:00:01put that in the
01:00:02footage there
01:00:02and then this is
01:00:04a part of the
01:00:04coordinated drill
01:00:05where we are
01:00:06doing a large
01:00:07circle
01:00:07a big huge
01:00:09outer circle
01:00:09and then we have
01:00:10a small inner
01:00:11circle
01:00:11so we are going
01:00:12clockwise and
01:00:13anti-clockwise
01:00:14so that it's going
01:00:15to have a kind
01:00:15of unique display
01:00:16when everybody's
01:00:18in white and
01:00:18everybody is in
01:00:19unison so that
01:00:20it's kind of
01:00:22it's an interesting
01:00:23I think you're not
01:00:24getting the value
01:00:25of it here
01:00:25now that I look
01:00:26at it
01:00:26because we're not
01:00:28all dressed how
01:00:29it's supposed to
01:00:29be but and
01:00:31then what from
01:00:32this we would
01:00:33exit out of the
01:00:34circle and then
01:00:35make back the
01:00:36same line formation
01:00:37well I mean from
01:00:39previous periods we
01:00:40would have seen
01:00:40that that
01:00:41coordination by the
01:00:42TTPS mounted
01:00:43branch
01:00:44going by
01:00:44I've seen it
01:00:45on the savannah
01:00:47and on the
01:00:49roadways
01:00:49when you come
01:00:51out there so
01:00:51I know that
01:00:53a little bit
01:00:54is lost because
01:00:54you all are not
01:00:55in the same
01:00:56colors and
01:00:56uniform
01:00:57I now realize
01:00:58that but we
01:00:59can't see it
01:01:00actually now that
01:01:01I am privy to
01:01:02be on the
01:01:02outside because
01:01:03when you're in
01:01:04it you're just
01:01:04so much in the
01:01:05momentum guiding
01:01:06the horse guiding
01:01:07the troops because
01:01:08it takes a lot to
01:01:09keep the horses in
01:01:10line and to keep
01:01:11your pieces in my
01:01:12mind that I'm
01:01:13you're seeing me
01:01:13there looking cool
01:01:14and calm and
01:01:14actually going
01:01:15ta-dum ta-dum ta-dum
01:01:16ta-dum ta-dum
01:01:16you're playing that
01:01:18in your head
01:01:18yeah you're actually
01:01:19playing the drums
01:01:20and the trumpet
01:01:21in your head in
01:01:22order to keep
01:01:22that momentum
01:01:23and to keep the
01:01:24pieces so that's
01:01:25sergeant philip
01:01:26guiding us there
01:01:27and what we tend
01:01:28to do when we
01:01:28take the line
01:01:29formation before
01:01:30we proceed
01:01:30we would identify
01:01:32what our
01:01:32shortcomings are
01:01:33so that we keep
01:01:34the drill tight
01:01:35and neat
01:01:35and we execute it
01:01:37in line formation
01:01:38and strategically
01:01:39certainly a lot
01:01:41of work
01:01:41it is a lot
01:01:42of coordination
01:01:43a lot of
01:01:43planning
01:01:44it's unfortunate
01:01:45that we wouldn't
01:01:46see your hard
01:01:48work translate
01:01:49into the parade
01:01:51this year
01:01:52but maybe
01:01:52but hopefully
01:01:53we still want
01:01:54to be outside
01:01:55we will still
01:01:55be outside
01:01:56still doing
01:01:56our duties
01:01:57we will be
01:01:58with the horses
01:01:58giving the public
01:02:00an opportunity
01:02:00to still interact
01:02:01with us
01:02:01and to have
01:02:03that police
01:02:03presence
01:02:04to create
01:02:04that safety
01:02:05yes definitely
01:02:07no we go
01:02:08to divisions
01:02:09we go to
01:02:10other divisions
01:02:10we have a trailer
01:02:11and what we will
01:02:12do is we will
01:02:12take the trailer
01:02:13and the horses
01:02:13and we go to
01:02:14other divisions
01:02:14so we don't
01:02:15just only come
01:02:15out for parades
01:02:16what we will do
01:02:17is we will
01:02:17partner with
01:02:18the divisional
01:02:19commander
01:02:20to find out
01:02:20what day is
01:02:21good for us
01:02:21and we also
01:02:22try to go
01:02:22to other divisions
01:02:23so we can
01:02:23expose them
01:02:24to the same
01:02:24experience
01:02:25with the horses
01:02:25alright that's
01:02:26a really good
01:02:27initiative
01:02:28from you guys

01:02:30about a minute
01:02:31left
01:02:32I don't know
