02:25Welcome to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Massant.
02:43Welcome to our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago.
02:46Our international viewers, and of course, our brothers and sisters on the Isle of Grenada.
02:52It's Tuesday, and of course, today with us is a man that I think will live very long.
02:56We just mentioned his name yesterday.
02:58Corporal Derek Shaboudi of the St. James Police Youth Club manager and founder.
03:03Welcome, sir. How are you doing?
03:05Well, that's like the weather keeping it damp and overcast.
03:09But I thank God for small and big mercies.
03:12Welcome back.
03:13Thanks so much. Good to be back.
03:16Blessings to you and yours and to the listenership.
03:19I know that people have been constantly being informed, and I'm grateful for the participation.
03:24You see when people are calling, it's excellent.
03:26I also want to use this platform with your permission, of course, to congratulate all the SCA students who received their results.
03:34I mean, they say it is a time of their life.
03:36You know, I want to let parents to continue to support them on behalf of the commissioner police, the executives.
03:42It is a wonderful thing when, you know, you have been in primary and you're transitioning to secondary.
03:47You look forward to so much.
03:48Yes, indeed.
03:49You know, and we want to congratulate the thousands of students who got their results.
03:53We salute them, and we trust that they do all, you know, very well in terms of transition from the primary to the secondary school.
04:00Yeah, certainly.
04:01And, you know, you talk about youngsters, you know, there's another headline now over the last couple of hours, you know, Prime Minister Kamala Pesad,
04:11speaking about clampdown on young drinkers, front page of the Daily Express today, of course.
04:18And speaking last night at the Monday night forum in Penal, she did indicate that they were going to be raising the age limit for drinking to 21.
04:29And for gambling or, well, if you intend to use marijuana at the age of 25, and she did speak about the worrying trend of alcoholic addiction at a younger age now.
04:43And she, they're moving to legislation in the coming months, of course, to change the legal age of drinking from 18 to 21.
04:52And I imagine there's been a lot of feedback about it.
04:55I know our journalists were having today, you know, talking to various sectors, people about this.
05:02And I mean, as a person involved with a lot of young people and interact with them, I guess you will obviously get some feedback as well.
05:10But what is your take on that?
05:11Well, I think it's a step in the right direction.
05:13We need to applaud the government of the day.
05:15I think that too many young people are exposed to alcohol consumption.
05:19And the glamorizing of it has done a lot of injustice in terms of the video and the promo, you know, and I think it's a very hip thing.
05:28My personal view is that young people are now poly addicts.
05:32They are now just smoking, drinking.
05:34They are mixing their drugs.
05:35So when you're high, it's not just high on marijuana.
05:38If you're high on alcohol, there are a number of different drugs that young people are now open to and is now attracted to them in terms of going parties and so on.
05:47I think the 21 ages are a good thing.
05:50Young people need to save them from themselves sometimes.
05:53But more than that, I think the enforcement component is paramount.
05:57We have good laws, you know, but we need to enforce it.
06:00We need to get the bars on board in terms of ensuring that young people over the age of 21 are not consuming alcohol.
06:07We need to get the parents to ensure that they're not consuming alcohol.
06:11We need to get the community to buy-in.
06:13It's not just a law enforcement but it's a culture, it's a social thing.
06:18And people need to understand that the earlier you start drinking, smoking and drugging, it has no justice.
06:25You can't find out work, you know, your whole career in terms of sporting is damaged.
06:30So it has to be an education drive as well in terms of why are we pushing this 21?
06:36Because of our data consensus, by extension, it is in your own interest, health and otherwise, that we save young people from themselves sometimes.
06:45Yes, and that legislation, of course, as I said, it will also hinge on the bar owners, the nightclub owners.
06:54You know, there will obviously be penalties following underage children or persons into your establishment.
07:01And I imagine now, more so than ever, your identification, your DP or your ID card would be one of those things you have to work with to prove that you're over the age of 21.
07:15If you want to get into a bar or a nightclub to consume alcohol, and of course, if you want to go to a casino or, you know, for the age of 25 and up, you have to prove that you're over 25.
07:28So certainly in the coming months, of course, when this legislation is brought to parliament, I imagine the public will be following closely.
07:37And I honestly think it is indeed a step in the right direction to help tighten up those gaps that we have where you see young children or young teenagers in nightclubs or even in bars sitting and consuming alcohol and without a worry or care in the world.
07:54And, you know, sometimes I don't even think that some of the bar owners really even care once they get a seal.
07:59Yes, and more than that, there are some bad actors, too.
08:02You'll find some of the adults will go and purchase alcohol as an adult, two, three, and not knowing that they're going and, you know, ensure that their junior colleague who would benefit from it.
08:13So sometimes even though, you know, there is a case where the bar owners will be held accountable, you also have to look at some of the adults who are accomplice and eating a bit in something arranging these adult leverage.
08:25Well, I hope that that will also be part of the entire, you know, will form part of the law in terms of penalties for even adults caught purchasing alcohol that is handed over to younger persons under the age of 21.
08:42And I imagine at times they will have sting operations, they will have police assessing or looking at certain areas where young people frequent to consume alcohol.
08:52So, you know, those are things, of course, in the making.
08:55Yes.
08:56So we are very hopeful by this law.
08:58Yeah, we applaud the government.
08:59It is, we have to save the young people and not just through legislation, but through education, through, you know, there's a sense of worth, a sense of value.
09:07And what happens to you when you start drinking alcohol?
09:10Let's look at that.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Let's look at your psyche.
09:13And I think it's only need to be applauded.
09:16And I trust that everybody will come on board to support that.
09:19All right, let's take a quick look now at our headlines.
09:22All right, let's move.
09:25You're doing well.
09:30OK, let's.
09:32Let me see each other.
09:36Let me see each other.
09:40Let me see each other.
09:41Before we get on board the show, let me see each other in the house.
09:44Let me see each other.
09:45Let me see each other.
09:47We're ready today and we'll see each other in low efficiency.
09:50Now we have a bell overnight.
09:51so those were some of the headlines over the last 24 hours and of course uh we did tell you
10:01yesterday about the unfortunate death of uh kerry von adams found in the heights of guanapo
10:09after he was kidnapped sometime on saturday night and you know police um you know uh got
10:16his girlfriend received a call uh demanding a ransom of some fifteen thousand dollars
10:22his body was found dumped in uh these bushes here uh just as the cameraman is panning there
10:28and it was really sad that um he was killed and dumped here um after they collected this is the
10:35area actually where they found the body and they collected the ransom of fifteen thousand dollars
10:41and despite that they still took the life of mr von adams yeah i certainly would like to convey my
10:50condolences to mr adams family i don't know if he's a father i didn't know the details in terms of his
10:57family composition but one life is you know too much and it's very unfortunate fifteen thousand
11:04dollars and you still take the man life share evil and you know we call in the public yeah if you see
11:09something say something if you have footage anything that can help the police to bring this man uh life
11:15to justice we you know we are honored and we are grateful somebody must have seen something somebody
11:22must have seen something to assist the police in in terms of you know ensuring that uh we bring closure
11:27to this matter very unfortunate then i'm equal on people again how they conduct the business and who they
11:33pick up you know always there's a different way that you need to behave and conduct your affairs now
11:40and we must not take things for granted in terms of this very unfortunate time we live in these people
11:45are evil they have no care for life they're not patriotic and they do not love this country
11:50and we need to make them an example and mind you uh that area has been synonymous for quite a while i mean you go
11:57back even before andrea barrett yes uh persons uh being dumped um you know after they're killed in a
12:04specific area and dumped off the the precipice yes of going up into that area the heights of guanapo a lot of
12:10forested area you know uh cliffs yes um you know we've had several murder victims found in this area over the
12:17last couple of years you know one one of course as i said before that everybody remembers is andrea barrett and then there were a number of other
12:25persons after her including another female i think quite uh recently after within a month or two i was
12:32found also dumped in that heights of guanapo area yeah the area has become quite popular not for the
12:38positive things but for that which is negative for the elements that go into the building you know we
12:43need to probably get the area led we need to get some signs put up we need to transform the place
12:47you know we need to recreate the place so that they will know okay this is not the area of it and sometimes
12:53you look at some places it is an excellent area for crime you follow not even yes yes
13:00we have a second thought this is a righteous place we need to look at places like that and
13:05and ensure that lights are up cameras are something is of indicating that there's some type of
13:10you know livelihood and movement of people taking place well i remember that residents have been calling on
13:16authorities for quite a while after the andrea barrett murder a couple years ago um for for proper street
13:22lights and even the roads need to be uh fixed in some of the areas going up to that area and of course
13:29the call for cameras is also important you know um so you can actually track any kind of strange
13:34vehicles going into that area um and and seeing if they come back out you know if they don't come back
13:40out with somebody or they might have stopped in a particular location where you can actually pinpoint
13:45and see what they would have done at that location yeah and and this is just one of the many areas
13:50that there are the criminal elements use and we just shut them down you know we need to make note
13:55make sure you know that how you have color codes i know this is an area that we need to make sure that
14:00um this is the last time you'll use a body you'll commit a crime because the police and the members of
14:07the committee is quite aware and we'll put systems in place yeah all right so uh uh our dear friend
14:15clarence rembrandt was here yesterday evening and of course uh yesterday evening um you know his team
14:21uh was assisting officers at the from the barrack police station and retrieving the body of a 23 year
14:28old spanish national apparently he drowned at uh surprise trace kunjal road barrack poor this is the area
14:36here uh the deceased has been identified as zillia emerson gonzalez of gp road barrack poor uh really
14:46really really sad you know seeing you know somebody who went missing of course and uh from later drowned
14:52and that in that area there doesn't look to be you know a bigger expanse of water but definitely you
15:00know those little ponds and so on you know your kid can get stuck your head even if you go into the
15:05water and you're not sure where you're diving into and again we are people to move in groups you know it
15:11is is when you on your own you are subject to so many different things nobody can run back and say hey
15:17this happened you can alert somebody it's always good to move in groups and it's very unfortunate
15:22and i want to appeal to the um the members of the people who love the terrain and love hiking and
15:28all that make sure inform somebody go with a professional group a group that can carry or bring
15:32you back in case our area takes place they'll be able to maneuver we need to make sure and move with
15:37persons who are accurate and familiar with the terrain and they'll be of some sort of service and it's
15:42rainy season now so you have to be even even more careful because you know some of these areas they tell
15:47you not to go because of heavy rainfall can cause land slippages uh you know trees could come down
15:53et cetera et cetera so you have to be very cognizant of all that if persons who are familiar with the
15:58area tell you you know you shouldn't go to that area and then of course we we talk about that kind of
16:05safety but there's also road safety handling vehicles on the roadway and we had a two incidents one in the
16:11santa cruz area this one is around the queen's park savannah heavy rainfall yeah took place this
16:17afternoon and you're seeing a vehicle uh i don't know how he arrived or reached there but he mounted
16:23the pavement of course and and ran into the the steel structure that that barricade area there and there's
16:31a dustbin as well um fortunately there was nobody and there's some benches there you also disturbed
16:38um but fortunately there was nobody walking or running around at that time you know a lot of
16:44people tend to be exercising around that time in the afternoon around the queen's park savannah and
16:49we always ask people to to exercise caution on the nation's roadways speed speed number one problem
16:57is no matter of your tires sometimes and sometimes you must get a feel of your vehicle that something is
17:01wrong and therefore you reduce the speed limit you take your time because you know that your car is not
17:06moving speed people i don't know why what people where they're going why they're going so fast
17:11they you know they're disrespectful they have no manners sometimes you you're driving too slow to
17:16pop in you there is a kind of attitude and this is a reflection too of the individual yeah when you go
17:21behind the car it's not just the kind of it's the individual driving the car so if you're arrogant
17:25if you don't care if you're lawless then that it will be a natural mantra driving a vehicle i need to
17:31sometimes make these people an example and let them know that they're innocent drivers on the road
17:37and you're sharing the road as a result that that there's no need to be speeding come dock yourself
17:42with courteous and you follow yeah i agree and i i did send i did that we did start some video i don't
17:48know if um my producer got it but there was also a vehicle that overturned in a over a bridge
17:53okay uh in the in the santa cruz area also earlier today so we want to employ everybody please try to
18:02exercise cautions on the nation's roadways especially when it's wet and especially now that
18:06we are in the rainy season until the end of november remember the numbers to call 623-1711
18:12extensions 1996 and 1997 we're going to take a short break and when we get back we'll have more stay with us

21:13media and beyond the express integrity and fearless journalism
21:30welcome back to be on the table i'm your host marcus and joined today by corporal
21:36derek shabody of the saint james youth club manager and founder i know you have a couple of things you
21:42wanted to to raise of course we know that the school violence incident that took place a couple weeks ago
21:49in the couvert district uh those uh young women were actually appeared before court they were charged yes
21:56were they expelled from school well expulsion will not become a priority because of the fact that they
22:04are charged yes right and we want to mention that the police role is too full right if you're on suspension
22:12then we have centers where young people can occupy the time constructively pending the outcome
22:17sometimes even the officers who are coordinators of the suspension center mimic certain recommendations
22:26they'll say listen this young man i want to recommend so fall i'm going to recommend a white
22:31up a school that is probably tailored in terms of the fact that he's a slow learner more counseling that
22:37kind of stuff and even after the suspension we recommend that the child continue the police which is an
22:42excellent platform to continue to work with them expulsion means that the school has given up the
22:50school has said listen that's it and therefore based on the the gravity of the your offense committed
22:57the director um actually they know they can continue school what happens after the expulsion is important
23:04because you would have to transfer that file to a group or to an organization that will be able to
23:10work with an individual study youth or young person wouldn't feel that they're abandoned but we need
23:16to send a clear message of us there's a certain type of behavior that should not be tolerated should not
23:22be condoned should not be supported and again i want to mention the importance of holding parents
23:27accountable sometimes parents are accomplice and sometimes when you invite the parents in for the sessions
23:33you realize that the child comes from a toxic environment environment there's a lot of violence a lot of
23:38obscene you follow so that the child is the sum total of our greater problem within environment
23:44and by extension in school some students do very well i come from nelson street i have seen violence
23:50and i've chosen not to be violent i frown on that but not all young person have that tenacity
23:56build that way didn't cut from that particular court and therefore we must not only look at penalizing
24:03but we must also look at how do we work and ensure that that will happen again prevention is better
24:08than cure um violence has been with us for many years it has not been glamorized you certainly watch
24:14a movie you certainly watch even simple songs you see the violence in it they have now become very
24:20creative in trying to entertain and make it form of a laughter um if you look at the social media you'll
24:27see you're getting 1.2 million likes over violence you're doing something positive you might get four
24:32so it is a message we keep sending young people to be negative is to be seen and therefore we need
24:39to be careful how we send that message and therefore the young people that we see carrying on
24:43fighting it is something more that we need to pin down home school family member etc and my concern and
24:52i think a number of stakeholders have raised this over the last couple of weeks uh when these young
24:58students are expelled what's the next step and you have to have something in place definitely to ensure
25:05that these persons don't go you know further down that path of negativity but rather a path of rebuilding
25:12and refocusing their lives because you still need to get an education if you are expelled at the age of
25:1714 15 16 years of age you still need to finish schooling and i think that those are things that
25:23we have to also look at we're not trying to in any way uh you know see what they have done is not wrong
25:29they have been charged they're brought before the courts so they have a matter to answer before the
25:35court yes and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty of course but where does it go now that
25:41these young persons now have been uh uprooted from school and now they have to find some other
25:47way to ensure that their education continues and this is why we call for for more institutions more
25:53learning institutions that can fill that gap that can catch them a safety net because there are
25:59students who are violent you know we don't want to bury our heads in the sand because the society we live in
26:03and therefore we must understand that there are students who are violent what happens after as you
26:07indicate is absolutely important we are children who came to the police club to do 200 committee hours
26:14and after that they say so can i join the club because the environment we created you clubs are
26:18friendly environment is a safe one and therefore we must understand that we need more environment
26:24we need more solutions if we keep talking about the problem then we do very we do to young people
26:29very a lot of injustice but if we come up with solutions and therefore it takes you know a
26:35multi-pronged approach several stakeholders coming together to say we would want to make this case
26:40a model case so other young people looking on will know society does not reward by behavior however
26:46there is help we can rescue you can find help and sometimes the parents do need more help than the
26:52children and we have to address that to address any question in terms of its parity and understanding
26:58that we have become too tidy in terms of addressing the question of youth and crime we do respond more faster
27:04well you imagine that thousands of of parents out there listening and young persons as well and
27:11i mean hopefully a lot of them uh would would would take would sit up and listen and see what has happened
27:17to these youngsters and obviously try to ensure that that does not happen to them or they don't go down
27:24a similar path or follow a friend to do something that might lead them to to get into a situation like this
27:30and that is where we feel we recover the offense we cover the event but we don't cover the follow-up
27:38after don't cover what happens to a young person no position come back and say you know i have been
27:43through this program this program is excellent i've been turned around i'm grateful you know we have lost
27:48points in terms of that area and we need to go further in seeing not just young people who probably has
27:54misrepresented the school and by extension the environment but also the important projects
28:01initiative that have been put in place you know to save the young people from themselves you have to
28:06save them from themselves it cannot be that everybody looking for blood yeah and sometimes some children
28:11about victim and they are both perpetrator and we have to also recognize that yes certainly we hope for
28:18that you know in the coming days and weeks people will become more cognizant of school violence
28:22and try to assist one another assist your peers get any kind of advice that you might need if you feel
28:29you're being bullied or if you feel you're being attacked by any other student before it gets out of
28:35a hand that's right where you end up on social media or somebody that you might know one of your friends
28:40might end up as a victim on social media attacked by others so we we hope that uh all those persons who
28:47are listening out there all the young people will take heed of that all right we're going to take a short

32:57welcome back to be on the table i'm your host mark busan joined today by corporal derek shabody manager and
33:15founder of the saint james youth club and some news we just got as well apparently the police have arrested
33:22and charged a prominent attorney uh with some sexual offenses uh based on the information that i received
33:29from a senior officer and i think the trinidad and tobago police service will be issuing a release
33:34pretty soon uh to address that situation it's in its entirety so certainly it's something that we're
33:40going to be looking at uh and and monitoring over the next 24 hours yes the enforcement of law takes
33:47president you know and sometimes the ugly thing but it has to be done yeah certainly uh i know that um
33:55you you you you spoke about um you know we're in the vacation period and i know there are some some
34:01some things you would like to share with the parents out there in terms of uh you know upcoming
34:06vacation camps and so on that they can they can benefit from by sending their children to yeah well
34:11thousands of children as you know um will be out of school for nine weeks and we in the business
34:18of while now know that there are parents who have somewhere to put their children and unfortunately
34:22are some parents who are looking for places and we want to warn parents in terms of uh the camps that
34:29are advertised well advertised well marketed do not take that for granted you know and sometimes you in
34:35your bid and your haste to put your children in a camp sometimes you lose sight of the individuals
34:44and and at the end of the day you pay an unfortunate price you know so our campus from july the 21st
34:52the 22th of august and we're asking parents as much as our camp uh is for almost one month and you see
34:59it's from nine to three yes some camps open one we go until three because when the sun turns either working
35:04and it's your club you know do justice come um get your children involved in the camp make sure their
35:10time is occupied constructively there are camps all over trannebago policy clubs you know but more
35:17than that find out who are the leader go in do assessment look at the leadership look at the level
35:23of discipline do not take things for granted that my child going to camp you know see the kind of
35:28communication they have look at the kind of tutors it is your business to ensure that what you put in your
35:34child is somewhere safe whether to be safe than to be sorry our youth club have 33 years so we have
35:40an excellent track record and i can speak for several other police clubs as well and other camps who do
35:45good work but there are people only here for the money they're not here for the safety of your children
35:50they're not here to ensure your child enjoy they have to collect a registration fee a cost and that's
35:56it and sometimes you know you have situations where cameras reach home or reach back to you
36:01and they're saying lord of mercy yeah you see something that you you were very displeased with
36:06yes so we call on parents to be very vigilant we ask them to pay attention to the camp one find out
36:13do your due diligence in terms of who is this leader how long this covers in existence look at the space
36:19the occupies is a clean space the environment conducive to young people ask questions before you know you
36:26allow your children to um get involved in camps and we know it is nine weeks but also there has to be
36:34some kind of academical component in terms of what you teaching them basic maths english your personal
36:40hygiene is not just about fun yes but at the end of the day allowing them to become better and more
36:46informed and more educated well i mean when you talk about camps but i think anything that you you're going
36:52to be sending your children to you have to do some background research you know if you're sending
36:57them to a private school or if you're sending them uh an out on a outing uh with people uh or a certain
37:05activity you need to do your research before to obviously ensure that as you said the safety and
37:10security of your children is paramount when they go out whether you're spending one hour or five hours
37:15in a particular location you must be able to account and feel certain and happy in in your in your mind
37:23that where you are sending them is that your mind will be at ease when you are at work or you are
37:28doing something else that's right and your phone call you're getting from the police is not that your
37:33child has been interfered with or your child has been injured but we just want to we all find out that
37:39when you come to pick them up you know there's a different phone call they get in right campus over what
37:44time you're coming and i want to appeal to the private sector and uh businesses within the space
37:51support you know you get a letter to action for a few cases of water dancing from ice cream they're
37:56asking for try to be sponsored your money is well spent in terms of supporting these camps and we
38:02appeal the businessmen to to come down say a few words talk to the campers so that they can see that
38:08the business people are investing in terms of our nation's youth and for those who are already
38:14doing it we want to salute them we want to applaud them and we thank them for going beyond the call
38:18of duty all right i want to salute um uh corporal theodore um who's now head of western vision committee
38:24police and miss allen and also portello our nice team i know that doing good work done at western
38:30division and we want to ensure that the more you do it at a collective effort you get better results
38:37how could you overcome and you have the fast service involved you don't have the dental
38:41foundation involved you know fundamental organizations playing a role in terms of
38:45working in concert with you to ensure that your camp come about transport is also paramount taking
38:52the children to different places yeah and we are a lot of planning and coordination you have to because
38:57if you don't i i as you said the attention span of of younger children tend to you know they dip very fast
39:04so you have to find things to keep them occupied oh yes and as i said not just sitting in the camp
39:09but moving around carry them to the zoo perhaps or some interesting uh historical site where you could
39:15share some perspective with them yes oh yes yes yeah and you you you're you're you're pointed quite
39:21nicely you see when you sit with young people you engage them in terms of what it is their interest
39:26yeah and therefore you ensure that that interest is met in terms of course and also it is a reachable
39:33objective more than that the parents must play a fundamental role the people coming on board and
39:37acting as counselors must be able to learn how to speak to people children must be able to communicate
39:43it's not that you like working with young people and you like and that's your calling but yet still not
39:49living up once a child gives you a particular negative behavior you follow you have to step up to the plate and
39:54know that you can become a mentor you're training you can work with a young person and at the end of
40:00the day you can develop that skill set because that's what we need we need mentors yep certainly mentors
40:07all right we're going to take a short break and when we come back we'll take some of your calls stay with
40:11us

41:39Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
41:59I'm your host, Mark Bassan, joined today by Corporal Derek Shabody of the St. James
42:03Police Youth Club, manager and founder.
42:06Of course, the number is to call 623-1711, extensions 1996 and 1997.
42:13I just want to remind persons also, a number of people have been calling in in terms of
42:19the FUL.
42:20A lady called yesterday asking particular questions about her application that has been
42:25in there for many years.
42:27Of course, one of the important things is that you have to have a COC, Certificate of Character,
42:32that is no older than six months.
42:34So, of course, if you have any other pertinent questions for the officers of that unit, you
42:39can call the numbers on your screen, 627-5217, extensions 12-410, 12-411 and 12-412.
42:49And I know you probably have a lot of friends too who also ask a lot of questions.
42:53Yes, I direct them like you.
42:55I direct them to the unit that handles that particular.
42:59They'll be able to pull the file.
43:00They'll be able to say, listen, this is outdated.
43:02You need to update this particular.
43:04The COC is absolutely imperative because it's six months and therefore the commissioner
43:09cannot treat with the file if there are some things updated.
43:12And the commissioner was here sometime with Mr. Hopkinson.
43:16Yes.
43:17And he did mention that he will be paying special attention to FUL and what is required in terms
43:23of the amount of response and persons that will be attended to.
43:29So, I think that people need to direct their calls to the unit.
43:34That unit will be able, they are more informed than I am, and they'll be able to give you
43:39all the relevant information in terms of how, what do you need, what do you require,
43:43and by extension, how far your file is in terms of being treated.
43:47Yeah, and I know Commissioner Guevara had also indicated recently in a press release
43:52that all those applications that are now pending will be dealt with with illiquidity
43:59and as quick as possible because, you know, a lot of people are anxious, you know, with this.
44:03You know, sometimes people say, you know, because of the crime and so on.
44:06But, of course, that does not mean at the end of the day that everybody that applied will get a firearm.
44:11It's a license.
44:14Say it one more time.
44:15Everybody that applies will not necessarily get a FUL.
44:20Well said.
44:22Yes?
44:23That's right.
44:24Because you have to fit the qualifications.
44:25You have to fit, you know, the questionnaire, the psychometric test.
44:28There's a number of different things before you get a firearm.
44:31That's not a toy.
44:32That is important, very important.
44:34It's sometimes to your own debt, you know, and therefore it requires a level of due diligence,
44:39questioning, and by extension, even your wife have to give permission.
44:43And if your wife and your husband have to give permission.
44:45Yeah.
44:46And that has to be written.
44:47You have to go and view your home.
44:48You have to go and look at the composition of your home.
44:50You have to establish where you're securing it.
44:52There's a number of different things in terms of dotting I and crossing your T's.
44:56Certainly.
44:57All right.
44:58We have our first caller on the line.
44:59Caller, good evening.
45:00Good afternoon.
45:01Good afternoon.
45:02Good evening, sir.
45:03Go ahead.
45:04You're live and be on the chair.
45:05Oh, hello.
45:06Good day.
45:07I'd like to make a contribution.
45:08I'd like to plead with the Commissioner of Police.
45:11So, senior police officers.
45:12Please advise those officers who are through escorts, like escorting trucks and trucks and
45:18things.
45:19So, please take it down.
45:20They're driving too hard.
45:21They're running forward and have these truck drivers running behind them.
45:24A siren, as I know, is to allow for the person with the siren to the traffic
45:29to the traffic.
45:30They give way, not to speed.
45:31And these fellas in danger, people lie.
45:32Too much, especially in the area.
45:34These police officers are there with cow bikes.
45:37They run forward and run the siren and the trucks are running behind them.
45:41There's still a speed limit on the nation road.
45:43Please, people who don't wait until three and four people die in accident.
45:46Then to correct it.
45:47Please stop begging Commissioner of Police or these regional officers or warned officers
45:51about their behavior when they're escorting these trucks.
45:55Please, have a blessing.
45:57Thanks a lot.
45:58And I will leave that one in your court answer.
46:00Yeah, I will only appeal to members of the public to take a photo, take a camera.
46:04You know, you feel that the officer was not using his expertise and wasn't balanced in
46:12terms of his driving.
46:13You know, creating a little bit of danger.
46:15You know, take a photo.
46:16Take a camera.
46:17And therefore, send it so that we will be able to treat with it properly.
46:21You know?
46:22And it is sometimes when, even me, from time to time, you see when officers do an escort,
46:27you know, will pull up to the stop immediately.
46:29You know?
46:30And sometimes a trained person who is in the fence driving, you know, will succumb to
46:35that.
46:36But not everybody is trained.
46:37Sometimes people panic.
46:38And sometimes, unfortunately, you have a number, a dominant effect taking place.
46:42So we appeal to my colleagues, and I mean, I understand the importance of doing an escort.
46:47But remember, we are sharing the road.
46:48And not every driver is a driver.
46:50Yeah, of course.
46:51And, you know, he raised a very important point, a very, you know, concerning point.
46:55Because, you know, yes, civilians also have, you know, their part to play.
47:00As well as police officers.
47:02Because sometimes people see police officers on the roads, and they sometimes do not heed
47:07some of the traffic regulations or restrictions enforced, or motor vehicle restrictions.
47:14And, you know, sometimes, for no particular reason at times, they run a red light.
47:20No siren on, they just decide to run a red light because they are in a police vehicle.
47:25And I think, you know, things like that always, you know, persons will always look at that
47:30and say, well, you know, you're the lawyer.
47:32You're supposed to set an example.
47:33Yes?
47:34Yes, yeah.
47:35I agree.
47:36There are some bad actors in the service.
47:37There are some officers who should not be driving police vehicle.
47:40And there are some officers who take things for granted.
47:42You know, we ask officers to do due diligence.
47:45You know, it's a vehicle.
47:46Sometimes you're reporting to a matter.
47:47But at the end of the day, you need to go safe.
47:49There are other players on the road as well.
47:51And therefore, you have to take that into consideration.
47:53And the public has been very kind to the police.
47:55Most 90%.
47:56They are siren, they pull over.
47:58You know, you don't have that attitude.
48:00So we are grateful for that type of courtesy extended even when ambulance are passing.
48:06So we don't want to misuse and abuse.
48:08And when the ambulance are on, it's because we have an urgent matter.
48:11However, we should pursue it in a safe and manner that at least everybody...
48:17Yeah.
48:18No injuries.
48:19No injuries, please.
48:20No injuries.
48:21All right.
48:22We have another caller on the line.
48:23Caller, good evening.
48:24Hi, good evening.
48:25Good evening, ma'am.
48:26Go ahead.
48:27You're live.
48:28Yes.
48:29Hello?
48:30Yes, go ahead.
48:31We're hearing.
48:32Right.
48:33Calling to find those.
48:35When you get into a motor vehicle accident, right?
48:39And you're right in the vehicle, in the, in the accident.
48:43How long does it genuinely take to get the report from the police station?
48:50That's the entire question, caller?
48:55Yeah.
48:56And that, and if you get into an accident and the person is wrong and the person is over
49:03the age, like about 85, 83, between 83 and 85, and can't see properly and stuff and hit
49:10you and then goes to the station and say, you, the person, you pull on the person.
49:16Um, how, how do we, how do we treat with that situation?
49:21Why, how, how come they allow people of that age to be driving on the road and not being able to see properly?
49:31Well, I, I, I, I know you will be able to answer that competently.
49:37Well, well, well, well, I will try my best.
49:39Yeah.
49:40I cannot, um.
49:41Well, you should deal with the first one first.
49:42Uh, how long does it take to get the report when you're getting the vehicle accident from the police?
49:47No particular time.
49:48Yeah.
49:49It all depends on the officer.
49:50It all depends on how fast he expedite his investigation.
49:53Right.
49:54And sometimes to follow up is, is important.
49:55Sometimes you do follow up.
49:56You, the officer know what's going on.
49:58Probably you have a, a matter to attend to.
50:00There's certain important information in terms of getting redress.
50:03So it's always good to do follow up.
50:05Right.
50:06And it's always good to be, make yourself familiar with the officer who is conducting inquiries.
50:10And if you feel that officer is tardy, there's a senior officer overseeing that particular inquiry.
50:15Right.
50:16The next matter, I don't think it is wise for us to be, uh, judged jury on a matter that I have no knowledge of.
50:22And therefore, blind and not blind and all that.
50:25I think, um, as much I would like to share information, it is in good stead that I recommend that you go to the officer or the unit that is handling that particular matter,
50:37that is treating with a particular matter.
50:39If I have the file before me, then I'll be able to give some more credible information.
50:43But unfortunately, I would not be able to, you know, um, to make any kind of pronouncement on it.
50:48And, you know, I mean, somebody has to be tested ever so often when you, you go to get your DP, um, you know.
50:54Yes.
50:55Licensing.
50:56Renewed.
50:57Um, and if you think you have a vision, uh, problem, they will ask you to do an eye test and so on.
51:01So that's not by, uh, guess somebody's given a DP over the age of 80.
51:07I mean, as I said, that will have to be determined by the officers and the powers that be if the person is supposedly unfit to drive, if they did not see you and they ran into you.
51:17That's right.
51:18Yes.
51:19So we leave that for now.
51:20We're going to take a short break.
51:21And when we get back, we'll have more.

53:28Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Besson, joined today by Corporal Derek Chabody of the St. James Police Youth Club manager on Fung Don.
53:44Quickly, the owner of this boat, Faith, it was in the Toko area last Saturday.
53:53Apparently, he made a report to the police.
53:54It was stolen along with its Yamaha engine, total value $120,000.
54:03Somebody would have indicated to him that it was stolen by a person known to put people in the area.
54:10And, of course, the police is asking anybody with information about that person and the boat to contact the Toko police station with any information.
54:19If you've seen this boat anywhere, please don't hesitate to contact the Toko police station.
54:26And we also had an incident involving a soldier and two other men who were intercepted in the east area overnight into this morning.
54:35And the police would have arrested these men and the police would have arrested these men and seized, I believe, two firearms.
54:42They believed that these men were on their way to what you may call a retaliatory killing based on a killing that occurred near Rima District, I believe, on Saturday night last.
54:57So, good work by the police there being able to foil these men en route to perpetuating a heinous crime.
55:05Not good.
55:07It doesn't speak volumes when you have soldiers and our own military bad actors in the protective service and defense force being involved in crime.
55:18Not good.
55:19It doesn't speak volumes at all.
55:21And we want to thank those who have provided police with the intelligence to intervene.
55:25And that's what we need.
55:26We need more intelligence that police can intercept.
55:28They can be able to address this kind of return revival and responding and, you know, this unfortunate killing that is taking place.
55:37No value for life.
55:39So, we want to appeal to people that the reason why we have less crime and because the persons like you and members of the public continue to partner with the police.
55:51And, therefore, intelligence is paramount as we continue to address the question of this unfortunate, you know, and sometimes for insignificant nonsense that these killings are taking place.
56:02Still fun, block, and, you know, who owns, who drugs, and it is madness that we don't understand that God has a purpose for us and a sense of value.
56:12And so, applaud the police service.
56:14For those who provide intelligence, we salute you, and well done.
56:18All right, we just have about a minute and 40 seconds for you to close off with anything you would like to educate the public on and enlighten us on.
56:26Yes, certainly.
56:27Don't forget the school will close soon.
56:30Nine weeks, support your camp.
56:32Make sure, know that the community policing, secretariat is tasked with ensuring that there are camps and camps all over.
56:40They're on the fifth floor, Riverside Plaza.
56:43You can come down to Western Division.
56:44If you're in South, you're in Central, in Tobago, you can go to the nearest station, inquire from the community policing section.
56:51If there are any camps, you know, they've got a good name, got a good number.
56:54Get your child involved in a camp.
56:57Join a club, not a gang, and make sure that this time is a creative time where the time are occupied constructively,
