00:00We may be in the hot rod county of Orange, but today's mark is one cool and stylish peach.
00:12Her look is vintage flair, her car a 67 Nova, and now it's time to make the ride as hip as the girl.
00:18And we've got just the team to do it.
00:20Remember, this is the show where the owner gets tricked.
00:22And the car gets tricked out.
00:23Hey, I'm Courtney.
00:49I'm Chris.
00:50And the stars must be lined up right for a certain Chevy, because on today's overhauling, we take a 67 Nova and launch it into that galaxy known as Makeover Heaven.
00:59Now, the car may have been born in the age of Aquarius, but the owner is a young gal who's into that look where the 50s meet to rhythm and blue-collar cool.
01:06She's a hard-working sales clerk, and in just seven days, the facelift we've given her Nova will have her seeing but not believing.
01:12Katie's the owner of the 67 Nova, and with the help of our insiders, we're going to get the car from her, hand it over to our A-team, and then do a week-long dance that will have our mark hopelessly dazed and flat-out confused.
01:24Now, who are these insiders?
01:25Well, one is Katie's brother, Scott.
01:27He's a fireman.
01:28Their mom, Pam.
01:29And one crafty and in-the-know roommate named Jennifer.
01:32Now, with all these insiders, getting the Nova away should be a snap.
01:35That's right.
01:36Now, let's get to that crucial, all-important snap.
01:38So, how about a little less yapping and a little more snapping?
01:41Courtney, fire up those hidden cameras and go get that ride.
01:46Okay, Katie parks her Nova in front of her apartment.
01:49Our insider, brother Scott, unhooked her ignition wire last night, so as Katie gets up early, still in her PJs, she heads out to move the car for street cleaning.
01:57But thanks to Scott and overhauling, starting the car is a big, fat no-go.
02:02After a few more unsuccessful tries, Katie gets out and writes a please-don't-ticket-my-car note for the curb patrol.
02:19And Katie's note, well, it kind of works.
02:22She gets off with a warning this time.
02:25A little bit after the curb patrol issues the warning, up comes our insider, Scott.
02:28The plan, Scott is going to pick up Sis and get her over to Mom's, where she's going to borrow the family SUV until all these car problems can be solved.
02:37He's all right with you being a little late.
02:40So, now that Katie's going to have wheels for the week, Scott will later return to our Nova.
02:44And with Katie safely out of sight, our devious overhauling insider will meet up with a super devious overhauling host, working together to get the car over to, where else?
02:54Overhauling.
02:57Reconnecting the ignition coil was a snap for Scott.
02:59But we're just lucky that Katie's not even all that schooled about popping the hood open.
03:04Katie, we got your car!
03:06It's always mixed emotions as we grab that ride.
03:11Someone's bummed for now, but wait till you see them in a week.
03:15Overhauling.
03:16Here's our next victim.
03:1767 Nova.
03:19This is perfect.
03:20It's not as bad as I thought, but definitely not too good that we can't give it the overhauling of its life.
03:25Time to unleash our eager and skilled AT&T.
03:28Brock Oreck is an instructor and chassis master from that cool car school known as Wyo Tech.
03:33Stitz Street Rods is sending us Roland Gutierrez, a grade-A dude who knows his stuff.
03:39We're here at Daigle Street Rods, so we can't do this without top overall builder Gary Daigle.
03:44Also from Stitz Street Rods is suspension whiz Aaron Ohana.
03:48Ashley Sangster owns Classic Industries, and today he won't be selling parts.
03:53He'll be putting them together on our A-team.
03:55Jessie Combs is putting aside her studies at Wyo Tech, ready to take this Nova from needy to nice.
04:03And Team Captain Chip Foose is already doing the math, taking his extreme talent and dividing it into seven short days.
04:10Alright, we got the crew, they got the skills, we got no time.
04:14Now bring in the car.
04:15What do you think, y'all?
04:25The builders check for damage, while we're just plain being nosy.
04:29Alright, we're hunting to find Katie's treasures here in her Nova.
04:33She's a makeup artist for MAC, and she's got makeup books in her car.
04:39Kevin O'Quinn, good stuff.
04:41An organizer.
04:42This is all about makeup here.
04:44Magazines.
04:45We might have found some evidence, maybe.
04:47Oh no.
04:48Let's send that to the lab.
04:49She may be a funkier girl than we think.
04:53Uh-oh.
04:54Rubber gloves.
04:55Oh, she's a Britney fan.
04:58I don't know if we should be talking about that.
05:00And as a tribute to Katie's firefighting brother.
05:02We got a few fires to put out here.
05:04Yeah, we do.
05:05Fire number one, the design.
05:07Something Chip will tackle once he gets personality clues from Katie's mom.
05:11I wanted to touch base with you and ask you a few questions.
05:14She looks totally different than what she pictures herself.
05:18Like, she really, in her mind, pictures her Audrey Hepburn-ish.
05:23And I was thinking, it's more like, I want it to resemble maybe a 1930s black and white photo.
05:29So I see it being high pearl colors, not solid colors.
05:32Yeah, that'd be great.
05:33What are all of her tattoos?
05:35Do you know them all?
05:36Yeah.
05:37She has the cherries.
05:38She has the good luck with the horseshoe.
05:41She has the, her very first one was the, you know, the sunburst.
05:45Then she has a Vargas girl on her leg.
05:47And then you have some ugly ones on her elbows that I didn't have any part of.
05:51Well, that sounds great, Mom.
05:55With Mom's comments giving Foos ideas, Chip springs into action, both as lead designer and build captain.
06:01I want to fill all the bumper bolts.
06:04And, uh, kind of fit those a little better.
06:07And get rid of these, uh, rubber bumpers, side trim moldings.
06:10I want to figure out.
06:12Chip's thinking of making this the only 67 Nova with a gas door instead of an exposed cap.
06:17A trick that's a lot harder than it sounds.
06:20See, Foos doesn't just do what Foos wants to do, no.
06:23He's considerate, and every car is totally personalized.
06:27It's a gift for Katie.
06:29I want to make Katie happy.
06:30So I would say...
06:31Let's take it apart.
06:33Let's disassemble it.
06:34I'm ready.
06:34My favorite part of the build, taking the car apart.
06:41It might be Chris's favorite part, but to the A-team, it can become one bad surprise party
06:46as the car comes clean with all of its hidden, horrible secrets.
06:50You know, as the car's coming apart, we're all realizing that there's a whole lot more imperfections
06:54than we thought there was originally.
06:56Imperfections is Courtney's nice way of saying that a whole lot of this car is junk,
07:00and some of this junk can't even come apart unless you're using the right tools.
07:04With a little tiny screwdriver.
07:06Everybody grabs for tools.
07:07You've got to work with whatever you can find.
07:09So guys, there's just a couple more bolts to be loosened in there,
07:12and then the entire front clip will come off.
07:18Come on, this thing's still attached to the body of the car,
07:20and we can't quite figure out what.
07:21All right, we did it.
07:31All right, Scott, so this note says,
07:32please don't ticket me, my car won't start.
07:36Yeah, that is the note she wrote when she found out her car wouldn't start.
07:41Parking attendant did not give her a ticket.
07:45He gave her a warning.
07:46That was pretty cool.
07:47I told her that I'm in contact with a tow yard,
07:50and they said they ran her plates and that she has three tickets on her car.
07:56And what did she say about that?
07:58She, for a while, didn't even believe it.
08:01And I said, no, really?
08:02This has happened.
08:03And so she started to believe it then.
08:05So she's emotional about this?
08:07Yes.
08:07Uh-oh, Katie's been right.
08:08So this is the wrong time for this to happen.
08:10That was successful then.
08:11Yes.
08:11We've got her car.
08:12She thinks it was towed.
08:14She thinks she has outstanding tickets.
08:16Oh, I'm sorry.
08:17Am I ruining your shot?
08:18Didn't mean to do that.
08:20But I just wanted to come over here and let you know that it's the evening of day one.
08:23And as you can see, the car is pretty well broken down.
08:27Do you think she'd notice anything was different if it went and just parked it back in front of her house?
08:31She said, sorry, our mistake, wrong car.
08:35Yeah, she might notice.
08:37Everybody's curious, what's the game plan?
08:40Well, I'm still talking to people and figuring out where we're going design-wise,
08:43but I actually have a lot of ideas running around in my head already.
08:46I'm sure you do.
08:47And I just have to tackle them and get them down on paper.
08:51For more ideas on what Katie wants, Chip calls Katie's roommate, Jen.
08:55I had a couple questions about Katie.
08:57I wanted to know what you think her favorite colors are.
09:00Red and orange.
09:02In your mind, does she like new stuff or older vintage stuff?
09:06Vintage.
09:07Vintage?
09:08Is she more of a hot rod or a classic type car person?
09:11Classic.
09:14Katie strikes me by looking at her as the type, you know, she likes to incorporate that retro, vintage feeling.
09:21And although she's gone through these phases of kind of funkiness.
09:25She's maturing.
09:26She's maturing.
09:26And that's what I'm learning when I talk to Scott and Jen and her mom.
09:30The vision I have in my head is almost 1930s Hollywood.
09:33That's like the ultimate.
09:34The big silver screen.
09:35And I was thinking black and silver, or maybe it's going to be white and silver.
09:40But I'll get a line drawing done tonight and start playing around with it and throwing some colors down.
09:44And by tomorrow, we'll know where we're going.
09:47Hello.
09:48Day one, it's almost 11 p.m.
09:50We're finally getting around to designing.
09:52That's right.
09:52We've been waiting all day to hear what's going on in Foose's brain.
09:57Which, uh, hold on a second.
10:00I can hear the ocean.
10:04What did we learn about Katie?
10:06Actually, what's interesting about Katie is when we first saw our pictures, we thought this was going to be kind of a rockabilly car and everything else.
10:13But it seems that Katie has matured.
10:15Yes.
10:16I want to fill all the bumper bolts.
10:19We'll get the bumpers re-chromed.
10:21What I want to do is fill the lock holes underneath the door handles and the trunk.
10:25But we do have a wish list here, and I have contacts where we need to, uh, secure all these items.
10:31And I've got a list of body mods that I'm going to fill out here.
10:34A very long list.
10:36Coming up, there are unexpected twists in the state of the car.
10:47On day one of this overhaul and build, our Mark Katie was minus one car.
10:51As her brother Scott and our own Courtney swiped the rig and brought it down to Daigle Street Rods here in Orange.
10:57Then we tore apart the Nova as Chip Foose put his brain into that 67 Chevy.
11:02Starting a plan that we'll have our crew working around the clock for the next six days.
11:06And as we moved forward on day two, the crew went on a little shopping spree.
11:11Ashley from Classic Industries let Foose grab whatever he wanted without a single price tag in sight.
11:16He might know where he's going with his sketch.
11:18But Foose is about to hear that the realization of a design will be at the end of a road coated in Bondo.
11:24And if you look at the...
11:24Grab that.
11:25What's that?
11:26Right there.
11:26Let me look inside.
11:28The inside's really not that bad.
11:30It's a surface ruster, and it's crumpled down at the bottom a little, but not real bad.
11:36See, this is the issue.
11:38I don't know how close you can get in there.
11:40Did you put your finger in there yet?
11:43See?
11:43It's that deep in Bondo right there.
11:48Well, we might be able to just realign to the original.
11:52If somebody's grabbed the hinges, maybe we'll get lucky, but I don't know if that happened.
11:58Like you say, we'll check out the new panel and see where we're at.
12:00Yeah.
12:01For a classic car, you go to Classic Industries.
12:03It's one of the largest distributors of reproduction and original GM parts and accessories.
12:08I've looked it over.
12:08I need one of everything.
12:10Are you serious?
12:11Can't be serious.
12:12Any 67 parts.
12:13If you have a Camaro, a Firebird, a Trans Am, an Impala, a full-size Chevy, a GM truck, or, hey, Katie's Nova, you've come to the right place.
12:23It's your Katie Long.
12:24I think we're pretty much set on all the parts that we need to order from here, but I want to get the door skin and the rear quarter back to Daigle's as soon as possible,
12:32because we're kind of waiting until that gets done, and then we can get this car over to the paint truck.
12:37Katie's puzzled about her car.
12:38Scott tracked down a phony phone number for his sister, but now it's time for, you guessed it, the owner to get tricked.
12:45Oh, you can talk to me.
12:46I'm actually the head of the impound yard over here.
12:49Okay, perfect.
12:49What's your name?
12:50Katie, what's your name?
12:51My name's Chris.
12:52Hi, Chris.
12:53How you doing?
12:54Not so good.
12:56Okay, Katie.
12:57Oh, man, you know what?
12:58This is kind of a weird circumstance.
13:00Yeah.
13:00I probably have all the answers to your questions.
13:03First of all, I have to apologize to you.
13:05We had a big, big snafu.
13:08Yeah, we had a big snafu with your car.
13:11Yeah, that was a mistake, right?
13:13Yeah, it was a mistake.
13:15Are you going to bring it back?
13:17Well, this is the thing.
13:18Let me first of all explain to you what happened.
13:19And I know, again, I apologize.
13:21I've been in your situation.
13:22I've had my car towed.
13:24I don't think you have.
13:26I haven't been in your situation.
13:27Well, maybe you have, but not the financial situation I'm in.
13:30So I'm so confused as to why this is happening to me.
13:33Right, right.
13:34Well, let me try to explain.
13:35They had your license plate off by one number.
13:38This is what I'm going to do.
13:39Because it was a mix-up on the traffic enforcement officials' part,
13:44I'm going to forward date this notice
13:46to make it look like we received the car into our impound yard on Monday.
13:50And so you won't have to pay any storage fees over the weekend.
13:53Well, but why would I have to pay anything anyway?
13:55Well, because we're an independent operation from the city.
13:58And so you would have to pay our storage fees.
14:01But I'm not going to charge you for those.
14:04Well, Chris, thank you so much for that.
14:05But I don't understand why I would have to pay it at all.
14:07Let me ask you more about this car,
14:09because I actually used to have a 69 Nova.
14:11Do you have any plans to fix it up or anything like that?
14:14Oh, I've, yeah, I've had it for six years.
14:16I've plans that I'm just broke, so.
14:19Right.
14:19What kind of engine you got in there?
14:21It's just a straight six.
14:22Chris, don't do that.
14:23That's so rude.
14:25What?
14:25What are you talking about?
14:26I hate when guys do that,
14:27because I'm a petite little thing.
14:29So it is just a straight six.
14:31You're not a grandma or anything, are you?
14:33Oh, no, honey.
14:34How old are you?
14:36Are you kidding me?
14:37No.
14:38How old are you, Chris?
14:39I'm 34.
14:41I'm 27.
14:41Because you just, I don't know,
14:43you sound like a really cool person.
14:45I just feel like I have, like, a connection with you.
14:47I don't know if it's the Nova thing or what.
14:49Maybe we could go have a cup of coffee or something sometime.
14:52Wow.
14:56Do I got to wave to ladies or what?
15:03You know what's great about overhauling?
15:05It's that Christmas comes once a week.
15:07Hey, she just called me.
15:10Oh.
15:11What'd she do?
15:11Did she leave a message?
15:12No, I just didn't answer it.
15:13Call her back and see what happens.
15:15See what you said.
15:15Oh.
15:19Yeah, you have no idea what just happened.
15:22What happened?
15:22Number one, it was a complete mistake.
15:25Well, thank God.
15:26Well, no kidding.
15:27By now, it's a toss-up as to what has Katie more riled.
15:31The disappearance of her car
15:32or the oiliness of a certain tow yard operator.
15:35I have just some reason I feel we have a connection.
15:37I go, do you?
15:38I go, do you?
15:39Well, that's sweet, but no, I don't think we do.
15:41And he said, what kind of engine do you have in your car?
15:43And I said, well, it's just straight sex.
15:45And he goes, how do you feel about that?
15:47I said, I feel really good about that.
15:49Well, can we pick it up today?
15:51No.
15:52Tuesday.
15:53Why?
15:54Because they're closed at 3.
15:56She is going to be so shocked when this whole thing comes out.
16:00Well, she's buying it right now, so.
16:01It's great.
16:02So she thinks I'm all slimy, right?
16:05You heard it.
16:08I love it, man.
16:09Hi, Katie.
16:11I'm the one that you think is slimy.
16:14I'll see you next week.
16:16Day three began as the Stitz boys made a parts run.
16:19We're jumping in the hoopty.
16:21Going to TCI.
16:22We're going to pick up the front clip of the Nova.
16:24Replacing the front clip is a big job.
16:32It's going to need a top company totally involved.
16:35So who better than a crew over at total cost involved?
16:38Don't worry.
16:39If it falls off, I got it.
16:40Back at Daigle's, our car and his California performance transmissions comes through for
16:46us yet again.
16:47And Carl makes the scene from Guarantee Chevrolet, bringing in a 350 engine to replace Katie's
16:52tame old straight six.
16:53We're going to pull this out, get it on the stand so we can work on it while the body's
17:00down at the paint shop.
17:01Okay.
17:04It'll be a thing of beauty.
17:06As it always is.
17:07It's going to be a shame, but put it in a car.
17:26Gary, Jesse, and Ashley don't have far to go because Century Collision Center is just
17:30yards away.
17:31Let's go straight down.
17:32Katie's dreams are about to come true with a new V8 engine and AC from Vintage Air.
17:42While the focus is on rebuilding Katie's bumpers back at Daigle's, here at Century Collision
17:47Center, it's all about painting.
17:49I'm spraying on a little primer here, getting ready to paint these parts.
17:53And just when we were all trying to figure out what Courtney does when she's not hosting
17:56overhauling, well, it's clear that the lady's been off doing a little spray painting.
18:00I primed, now I'm going to paint.
18:02Ready to paint some red?
18:04Yeah.
18:04All right, here we go.
18:05Yeah.
18:05Let's do it.
18:16Well, the guys here at Century are probably going to be working all night, making sure
18:20that the car rolls into primer no later than morning four.
18:24All the parts that are off the car are in primer and paint right now.
18:27Over at Daigle's, Roland and Brock are working hard to make sure those bumpers are on their
18:32way to the Cromer.
18:33And on that note, I'm out of here.
18:42Courtney may be out of here, but Foose is still totally here, burning the midnight pens
18:47and markers as he settles on a final scheme for the overhauling we're doing on Katie's
18:51car.
18:51But it's clear that Chip sees a couple of other themes in our mark, glamour and art.
19:07Got most of the body mods finished.
19:09We still got to put that rear quarter on and get it over to the paint shop today.
19:12I'll be done with the rendering here in a few minutes, and you can go get a little sleep.
19:19Wake up Brock.
19:20Check out Jesse on the couch.
19:23That's our car.
19:24Pearl over a silver fade.
19:26A touch of red dividing the two.
19:28Now stand back and stare.
19:31Coming up, Chris gets face to face with our mark.
19:34On days two and three here with Katie's 67 Nova, the car came apart and the new powertrain
19:48chugged into the shop.
19:49Also, Katie got a little bit of news about what's going on with her Chevy.
19:52Chris called her as the overly friendly tow yard operator, telling Katie that the taking
19:56of her car was a mistake and she's going to have the ride back in a couple of short days.
20:00Actually, the car is in body and paint right now, so we need to come up with a new scheme
20:04because believe me when I tell you, Katie will not be getting her car back in a couple
20:08of short days.
20:09Not just yet, anyway.
20:16With only a short time left, we're lucky we got Art Ashley and his Century Collision Center.
20:22Got a lot of work ahead of us to get this car painted by Sunday.
20:26Even with the replaced parts such as the driver's door scan and the incoming quarter panel,
20:30piece, this body is in need of some serious makeover.
20:47We're having to take another set.
20:49The body works so extensive on this.
20:50We've put five coats of primer on this, baked the parts, and now we're blocking them.
20:55We're going to reprime them again tonight.
20:57And so we're ready for paint tomorrow.
20:59Chip is installed as one-of-a-kind Nova gas door, ridding the body of that giant exposed
21:04cap that will haunt most other Novas for the rest of their days.
21:08And now, time to set up Katie for a big in-your-face prank.
21:13Hi, Chris.
21:14Hey, Katie, how are you?
21:15I'm okay, how are you?
21:16Good, sorry, I was on the other line when you called.
21:18That's okay.
21:19Yeah, I listened to your message and that's absolutely no problem.
21:21I can definitely have it delivered to you.
21:23Thank you so much.
21:23No problem.
21:24Okay.
21:25Okay, bye-bye.
21:28Well, well, well.
21:29Things are going quite smoothly so far, which can only mean one thing, that it's going to
21:33be all screwed up when we try to deliver it back to her.
21:36But stick around, see what happens.
21:42Brock wanted to make a little cherry, sort of a fastener for the air cleaner.
21:46So, what I'm doing is helping him out in getting the back side of this aluminum cut out.
21:51And then we'll drill and tap it, and then flip it over, and I'll draw the cherries, and
21:54he can cut it out and finish it.
22:05Now it's Brock's turn at bat, sawing around the cherry sketch that Chip had penned on the
22:10other side of those threads.
22:11It takes more than a few careful and cautious cuts, but before long, Brock's work is starting
22:16to bear some fruit.
22:20One cherry a la foose.
22:25It's an aluminum picture of a cherry, but it's not a jewel just yet.
22:29So it's off to a whole mess of grinding and a whole lot of shaping.
22:33Long hours for a single piece that'll be as personal as Katie's own skin.
22:37Well, Katie, now we're down to just sand it and polish it.
22:41You've got a cool little cherry that'll hold it on your air cleaner.
22:44Way to go, Brock.
22:45Is that what you want?
22:48Yeah, I think that was exactly what I was thinking.
22:51Okay.
22:54Let's go put it on there and see if it fits.
22:58Okay, time for a totally cherry hidden camera prank.
23:01Since her car was towed by mistake, Katie's getting it back, returned by that strange guy
23:06who keeps hitting on her over the phone.
23:08The bad news for Katie, we're bringing her the wrong Nova.
23:11Hey, it's Chris.
23:12Hi.
23:13How you doing?
23:14How are you?
23:14Thought I'd deliver it personally and surprise you.
23:17No problem.
23:17Excuse me.
23:18Sorry, it's my day off.
23:19No, no, no.
23:19No problem at all.
23:20Wait.
23:21That's not even my car.
23:25Those aren't my tires.
23:27That's a...
23:28It's a...
23:28It was a Nova, right?
23:30Yeah.
23:30This is not my car.
23:34Oy vey.
23:38I can't even tell you how sorry I am about this.
23:40I thought I was doing such a great deed.
23:42I'm like, coming down here, going to get ready for my cup of coffee with you and everything.
23:45Now this is just a big snuff.
23:47That 67 right there is supposed to be going to San Diego.
23:50So your car may be going to San Diego right now.
23:52I got to copy it right now.
23:54Oh, my gosh.
23:54I am so embarrassed right now.
23:57It's okay.
23:57I can't even tell you.
23:57Honestly, it's one that...
23:59This whole week has just been, like, so surreal that I can't help but laugh.
24:04I hope it's not because all the stress is because of the car, man, because I mean, that's totally my fault if it is.
24:10No, no, no.
24:11It's just one more thing.
24:12Well, yeah, I mean, I'm going to go back down to the base and check the records and everything.
24:17Those are the same tattoos on either side?
24:19Yeah.
24:19That's cool.
24:20Well, no, exactly.
24:22No, the cherries.
24:23Yeah.
24:23I like those.
24:24Very cool work.
24:25Who does your work?
24:25I like these horseshoes, too.
24:26Those were...
24:27I used to live in San Diego.
24:28Oh, well, great.
24:30Maybe they'll see your car down there.
24:31Yeah.
24:32You know what?
24:34That's my car right there, and that's my cell phone.
24:36Okay.
24:37I have it, so...
24:38It's just unbelievable what's happening here.
24:40I'm just...
24:41Can I even tell you, Katie?
24:42It's okay.
24:44Now I'm having the kind of day that you're having.
24:45I'm going to go work out and turn around some of my energy, but...
24:47Good.
24:48So, all right, well, then...
24:49Okay.
24:50Well, it's nice to meet you in person.
24:51All right, so I'll be in touch.
24:53Okay.
24:53All right.
24:54Bye.
24:56Katie, not only do they have me lying to you all week, they have me driving to Stitch
24:59by Stitch in Redlands to get your upholstery done.
25:03See you guys in like four or five hours.
25:04Bye.
25:11How is anybody going to get all the new skins and padding on those ratty old seats in time
25:18for our reveal?
25:19Well, the process is a lot like the company that's doing it, Stitch by Stitch.
25:23This is a crack team of sewing and cutting masters, taking Chip Foose's elegant designs
25:33and bringing them all to life.
25:35And what's happening back at Daigle's?
25:40Well, it's phone time with Scott and Katie.
25:42Um, okay, so listen, so I wake up this morning and I get a phone call, you know, from Chris
25:45Johnson or whatever, that's his name, and he says, you know, I want to get your car to
25:50you, call me back.
25:50So I called him back and I said, you know, I really, I don't have a ride right now, and
25:53I said, well, it would really appreciate it if you would bring it to me.
25:56And he goes, well, you know, actually, we're obligated to bring it to you since it was
25:59our mistake.
26:00We'll be there between one and two.
26:01So I heard the tow truck and it's a huge flatbed, you know.
26:04And here comes this guy walking across.
26:06And he said, are you Katie?
26:07And I said, yes.
26:08And he said, I'm Chris Johnson.
26:09I said, I deliver you the car personally.
26:11And I'm looking and I go, that's not my car.
26:13And he goes, well, it's a Nova.
26:15And I said, yeah, I drive a Nova.
26:16And I go, but that's not my car.
26:17For a second, I was like, oh my God, am I on ****?
26:20So he starts unveiling the car and I'm like, no, it's gold, but the rims were like gold
26:28rimmed, you know, and that's how I knew it was my car.
26:29And it was, it was a piece of ****.
26:31And I go, no, that's not my car.
26:33And he goes, yeah, he goes, you're kidding.
26:35He goes, and he's like, I thought this was going to work out.
26:37I thought I was going to take you for coffee.
26:39I could have burst into tears and I just like, I can't do anything but laugh right now.
26:42And he goes, well, what are you going to do?
26:43And I go, I'm going to go inside and I'm going to stay there.
26:46Just give up, huh?
26:47Yeah.
26:48I was like, I can't, I don't know.
26:49Just call me when you find it.
26:50But he hasn't called.
26:51I'm sorry.
26:54Car just came out of second coat of primer.
26:56We're going to go ahead and wet sand the whole car down with 500, get it painted, get it back
27:03together and deliver it on time, day seven.
27:07Arthur's men take the white and make it right, hitting Katie's Nova in places that never expected
27:12to see fresh paint again.
27:19Chip!
27:20That looks real good.
27:26Where the original keyhole was down here in the deck lid, we no longer have that, so
27:31you have to carry along something and it's just, it's a remote.
27:34When I clap my hands, the deck lid will open, right?
27:36That stunning white is just the first coat on the color wheel of Katie's car.
27:53The next layers include a red stripe and a silver fang that will ride a little closer
27:57to the road than the pearl up on top.
27:59I'm playing off of this body line that has this increase over the fenders, through the
28:03door and the front fender.
28:05And what I did is I ran a paddle across that, which gives a little gloss on that, and I
28:10know that's where the highlight's going to always hit that line.
28:12Then I put a piece of tape off of that and then worked from that to drop down, and all
28:17the tape that I put on there was just to determine where the top of that stripe was going to be.
28:22He always seems to pull it all together.
28:25And now that it's through with the paint stage, it's time to get the body back to Daigle's for
28:29the rest of the build.
28:30Coming up, a very angry mark sets our phone line on fire.
28:45Now this make of Chevy has a long and way cool story.
28:48So if you want to know about Katie's car, you need the 411 on Nova history.
28:53Now back in 1961, the Nova was Chevrolet's entry into the red-hot compact car market.
28:59Now the design wasn't based on any other car.
29:01It came straight from the drawing board.
29:03Now at this time, Ford had the Falcon, Dodge had the Dart, and AMC had the Rambler.
29:07And although Chevy did have a compact car, thanks to the Corvair, their goal was to develop
29:11something new that was both compact and stylish.
29:14All of these cars had what's called a unibody design.
29:18That means it had a completely detachable front end in case the fenders or any other pieces
29:22of front end sheet metal had to be replaced or repaired.
29:24By the time Katie's Chevy rolled off the assembly line, it was already having to compete with
29:29the newly introduced Camaro.
29:31But today, vintage Novas like this are in a class by themselves.
29:34And Katie's Nova is definitely on its way to the head of the class.
29:38Gary, are you going to stick around and help us set this up today?
29:40Oh, of course.
29:44We need all the help we can get.
29:47Or we'll take all the help we can get.
29:50We can hardly wait to get this car back to her.
29:54I bet you she's going to be surprised.
29:57At least.
29:58Hi, Katie.
30:00We've been doing a lot of work on your car, and I'll tell you what, your brother's been
30:03right in here with us.
30:05He's been digging like all the rest of us guys.
30:07We've spent just about all night up, no sleep, everybody's grouchy, but we know we're doing
30:15it for you, so you're going to be cool.
30:17This is going to be the neatest car any girl in the valley ever had.
30:21And you're the one.
30:23Have fun.
30:24I've chipped once.
30:26Everything mounted low, so there's nothing up top.
30:28We've got a rack with a steering that's going to go under here, and also the cross member,
30:36and we're going to have clearance issues on all of it.
30:40How close is the rack to the balancer?
30:43We're close.
30:44We're almost dead even.
30:46Bottom of this to the bottom of your balancer.
30:48We could swing it up like that, maybe.
30:50We could do that.
30:50It'll be into the panel.
30:52Into what panel?
30:53So Terry Zupan from Zup's Products Incorporated has joined the team, helping out with the
30:58engine modifications.
30:59This is the AC bracket, and up until last night, I didn't even know it existed.
31:05So we created something a little bit unique for this gal, and hopefully we won't run into
31:11any problems with it, but we're going to find out here in just a couple seconds.
31:15Oh, now we're talking.
31:16Give me power tools, baby.
31:17We're going to take a block like this, machine it so it can go in there, run a bolt through
31:29here, through the water pump, so it fastens the water pump, and then we'll have another
31:33bolt go into here or here.
31:35I'm not quite sure yet.
31:36Then I'll suspend the AC compressor right off the bottom of this, and I think we're in business.
31:43Terry's work is part of a big dream here for Katie, a girl in the valley who will have
31:47air conditioning for the first time, thanks to Zupan and the AC coming in from Vintage Air.
31:59All right.
32:01Put a little beauty to this puppy.
32:02This is our final piece.
32:14This will end up going on here like this, allowing it to be mounted on the car, and hold the alternator.
32:21This piece is what I was talking about earlier with the pivot point, I mean the adjustable
32:26slide, to get your belt alignment.
32:28So we're done.
32:30Give it to the boss, and see how she likes it.
32:34Thanks for riding, guys.
32:36Thanks.
32:37I work out.
32:39Pull it up!
32:41Yeah.
32:41Keep her coming, keep her coming.
32:42Deck her up.
32:44Come on!
32:46Get him off!
32:50Oh, sorry.
32:54I've got to say, that's twice.
32:58We're going to actually get a new set of door panels from Classic Industries, and our
33:03good friend Art here is going to re-dye the headliner and the door panels, and we'll
33:07pick a white that we want for the seats.
33:10Jan can get the seats done.
33:12Art's going to get all the other pieces done.
33:14We've got a silver carpet coming, and we've got also a silver fabric from a 57 Chevy that
33:19looks really cool.
33:20It's kind of a cloud pattern with a little black, and we've got everything figured out
33:24now.
33:25We're ready to roll.
33:26Gary Daigle Street Rods is just the place for the rebirth of the 67 Nova.
33:31With Ashley's Classic Industries coming through with all the right parts, you'd be crazy to
33:35think we couldn't get this car done on time.
33:37Of course, our ability to pull off the impossible in seven days has a lot of people wondering
33:42if we're the ones who need our heads examined.
33:52On days four and five of this overhaul and build, our pals over at Century Collision Center
33:56stripped the car, primed it up, and hit the booth, all for a paint job that's going to
34:01make Katie wonder where her old car is hiding.
34:03And now, friends, join with me in prayer that we may find the strength to complete this
34:07impossible bill on time.
34:09Overhaul it!
34:11Yeah!
34:14Morning of day six.
34:15We have the subframe assembly painted.
34:17We have the core support painted.
34:18Tonight, the plans are to get the subframe back on the car, all the suspension set up, completely
34:26ready for the motor to be installed in the morning.
34:29Once we get the motor, trans, everything in, brake lines run, we should be running and
34:34driving by tomorrow.
34:36Yeah.
34:37Getting curious?
34:38She was a little, or not suspicious of, but concerned herself, was her work.
34:43She doesn't know if her work believed her own story, that her car got stolen.
34:47What is going on?
34:48Let me give you the update.
34:49Well, I located your car down in San Diego.
34:52Right, I know that.
34:53And it is on its way to Orange County, or will be this afternoon.
34:59I'm trying to find a tow company that can do me a favor and tow it up to Orange County.
35:04Okay, so when do we think I'm going to get my car back, though?
35:06Well, what we're looking at, you get off of work at 4.30?
35:10Yeah, yeah.
35:11How soon can you be down in Orange County after that?
35:13Can your brother give you a ride down here?
35:16What?
35:16Are you kidding?
35:18Me?
35:20I'm not going to Orange County.
35:22Well, unfortunately, you have to, because once the car is in Orange County, they have
35:27a slightly different system, where the impound yard's in Orange County.
35:30Okay, but do you understand?
35:31I'm sorry.
35:32This is not my fault.
35:33You guys towed my car in an accident, and then you took it up and said, San Diego, I'm
35:38not going anywhere.
35:40Yeah.
35:40I mean, are you kidding me?
35:41I, no, I wish that I was kidding.
35:43I wish this was a big joke.
35:45I'm actually going to have someone else handle this, because this is absolutely ridiculous.
35:47It's been a f***ing week, and you guys have my car.
35:50You took my car to San Diego on accident, because you weren't professional enough to figure
35:53out whose car mine actually was.
35:55And now you're telling me I have to go pick it up, and no, no, I'm sorry.
35:59I'm going to have my brother deal with you.
36:01Can I just explain to you something really quickly, though?
36:02What I'm going to tell your brother is the same thing I'm telling you.
36:05Well, fine, and you guys can discuss it.
36:08I have to go back to work.
36:09Okay, but I do just want you to understand that we need you down here in Orange County
36:12as soon as possible.
36:13I have to go back to work.
36:14Okay.
36:15So why don't you understand that?
36:17I don't.
36:18What are you doing later on?
36:20What am I doing later on?
36:22Yeah, you know, maybe we could get together later on.
36:25Are you kidding?
36:26No, I thought that we, you know, when we dealt with all this, I thought we were going to...
36:30No, that's something that you thought.
36:32Oh.
36:32That is something that you completely thought.
36:34I think you are extremely unprofessional, and I cannot believe the audacity that you're
36:39going to sit here and continue to ask me out.
36:41Find my car and deliver me my car, okay?
36:44That is all we need to talk about.
36:45We've got 20 hours to go until we're delivering this car to you, Katie, and everyone's getting
36:53frisky, all right?
36:54It's that hour.
36:56I'm looking for the motor plate.
37:00I'm going to make some angry glasses.
37:02I can't find that plate.
37:03It's that time of the week when sleeplessness is finally kicking in.
37:06We really need to find this motor plate, or I'm going to get mad.
37:11I'm going to get mad.
37:15There it is.
37:17What the hell?
37:18I've been looking for this for hours.
37:22All right.
37:23Motor plate.
37:28We're about ready to drop your big cherry into your Cherry Nova.
37:32Hanging in there.
37:33The gang is finally putting the new power into the Chevy, proving that this is a talented
37:39bunch.
37:40Builders who truly know how to put together a car, even in their sleep.
37:44The home stretch is all about the details.
37:49It's got to come down.
37:50Right now, we're doing all the detail work on the motor, getting all the hoses run, some
37:53wiring run, and trying to get the engine compartment wrapped up so we can get on to other things
37:57like brakes, wheels and tires, and some things to get this car ready to drive tonight.
38:07Chip is over at MHT with Aaron Youngerman, making a custom one-off set of rims for Katie's ride.
38:12It's an 18-8.
38:14Yep.
38:14That's for Katie.
38:15I can't wait to see that on the car.
38:17You are the man.
38:24Aaron's putting the center in the mill here.
38:26It's going to start a program.
38:28When this one's done, we've got another one of Katie's wheels.
38:31All right.
38:31Let's do it.
38:33Four wheels, all having to be made one at a time.
38:37It's drilling a starter hole for a roughing end mill to go in there and pocket out material.
38:51It's all yours, Katie.
38:53Enjoy.
38:57Coming up, an amazing reveal like no other.
39:00You just can't miss it.
39:07On day six and seven of this overhaul and build starring Katie's 67 Nova, parts came in,
39:16builders stay late, and they finish just in a sliver of a whisker of a hair.
39:20And now you better stand back because we're going to push the button and launch that rocket
39:24of a reveal.
39:26Scott.
39:27Yes.
39:28Hey, it's Chris.
39:28She was, yeah, she was not a happy camper, man.
39:31And then at the height of her being very PO'd at me, I asked her out again, so which,
39:35you know, sent her even further over the edge, which was pretty funny.
39:38You need to do two things.
39:40Bring her down emotionally and then bring her down physically to Orange County.
39:45Okay.
39:46All right, dude.
39:47Sounds good.
39:47Good luck, man.
39:48All right.
39:49Bye.
39:50Bye.
39:52Awesome.
39:53One of those two is adopted.
39:54All right.
39:55Well, it's 12 noon on D-Day.
39:57We're about six hours away from giving Katie back her car, and we've still got a ways to
40:01go.
40:02Well, that needs to be done.
40:03You can see the cars behind us.
40:04It's got a lot of guys working on it right now.
40:05The glass still needs to go in.
40:07The interior still needs to go in.
40:08The seats and the panels are here.
40:10They're awesome.
40:11They're beautiful.
40:11They're going to look kick-ass when they go into the car.
40:17About four o'clock this morning, we were just on, just going.
40:23And while Stitch by Stitch works the lower interior, Pete from Westminster Auto installs
40:28a new headliner.
40:29This is what you call last-minute detail work.
40:32Bob and I are cutting out the holes for the speakers.
40:35Time for behind-the-scenes secrets.
40:37As this goes on, we're also busy rehearsing our reveal, hiding cameras into place and working
40:41with our insider to get the mark here at just the right time.
40:44Bottom line, on D-Day, overhauling is a train that can derail at any second.
40:48We're never going to make it.
40:50Oh, no pressure.
40:52Never.
40:54The car's getting there, but we're already wondering how Katie is going to react.
40:58Katie, you're so angry with Chris, I know, but only a couple hours left.
41:03Here we see the world-famous art car pouring fluid into the transmission.
41:08He's probably pouring more fluid than any 10 people on Earth.
41:10The new engine is just that, a new engine.
41:13It needs to be primed, treated, and tuned.
41:15Of course, sometimes the first step is just getting it started.
41:23And that first step is often about making sure that the carburetor is happening.
41:28At 260, you got one?
41:30She's going to want this car back.
41:33She wants her six-banger back in there.
41:36They're around the corner, Scott and Katie.
41:38We're like three minutes away from delivering this car.
41:40They still don't know what's going on with the axle.
41:42Foose is trying to solve this problem.
41:44The interior seats are still going in, and it is very stressful in this room.
41:49And for the first time, I don't know if we're going to make it.
41:51Final graphics, engine problems, a final leak to fix, and on top of that, Scott and Katie are here early.
41:58It's a perfect storm, but Foose is still as cool as they come.
42:02Yeah, they're early.
42:03They can wait.
42:06Sorry.
42:06Time to stall for more time as Chris goes out to open up the theater.
42:11How's it going?
42:13It's great.
42:14Good, Katie.
42:15Sorry about this again.
42:16I don't even want to shake your hand.
42:17I just want my car.
42:18Oh, okay.
42:19Whacky.
42:19You have no idea how inconvenient this is.
42:21And I rushed out of work.
42:23I mean, this is just, it's so wrong and ridiculous.
42:26And so unprofessional.
42:27And so inappropriate.
42:29The way that you were talking on the phone in front of my house, this has happened to you before.
42:32That you guys have done the wrong thing with the wrong cars.
42:34Do you think that that's a problem?
42:36Or no?
42:36Yeah, you know, I mean, unfortunately, we, you know, we deal with a lot of cars every
42:41day.
42:43And I guess a lot of unhappy people.
42:45Sometimes.
42:45That's what I'm getting.
42:46Unfortunately.
42:47That's the way it goes.
42:48Chris dances as fast as he can while the gang tends to a stubborn leak.
42:52It's just the radiator drain plug was loose.
42:56We'll tighten it up and stop that leak.
42:58I'm sorry about this.
42:59So now let me ask you a question.
43:00Yeah.
43:00What are you doing here?
43:02I'm here to make sure that you get your car.
43:04Because, I mean, I feel that it's.
43:05But you're a part of this.
43:06Why couldn't my car come to me?
43:07That's what I'm not understanding.
43:08Right.
43:09That's what I was trying to explain to you on the phone is that in Orange County, the
43:13law is a little bit different.
43:15The car has to be released to the register owner.
43:18Two areas right here.
43:20So how's this for a great play?
43:23Courtney is the driver who had to haul Katie's ride up from San Diego in rush hour traffic.
43:28Now, not only is Courtney delivering the wrong Nova, but it also seems that this angry car
43:32mover has some kind of stormy relationship with a certain Mr. Chris Johnson.
43:36It doesn't surprise me at all to see a pretty woman standing here.
43:40Wasn't this the case with the last two?
43:43You are so smooth, dude.
43:50I mean, let's just take, let's just take care of the, let's just take care of the paperwork
43:54so I can, you know, get this piece of junk off my rig and get out of here.
43:59All right?
43:59This will be the last time we work together.
44:01You know something?
44:03You better not be paying for any of this.
44:05Oh, I better not be.
44:06Trust me.
44:07I'm livid.
44:08I mean, he should, he, he should have had, do you have a rental car?
44:11No.
44:11Probably not.
44:12No.
44:13You should not even have had to drive here right now.
44:15That's what I thought.
44:16What am I, what can I do about that?
44:17I'm so livid.
44:20And I'm so sorry for you.
44:22And this is just hysterical to me.
44:23Not funny, but like ridiculous.
44:25You know what?
44:26He probably asked you out too, didn't he?
44:28Oh yeah, of course he did.
44:29Oh yeah?
44:30Johnson is so smooth.
44:32Unprofessional and inappropriate.
44:34Yeah.
44:34Oh, that, that, that's like the story of his life.
44:37Yeah.
44:37Well, what you should have said when he pulled up to my house.
44:39Not only is he asking me out every time he's talked to me on the phone, which I finally,
44:42I was like, I can't, I'm not even dealing with you anymore.
44:44I'm, my brother, I'm, I cannot.
44:45I'm like, you are disgusting to me.
44:46Right.
44:46And he goes, well, what are you doing afterwards?
44:49And I go, are you kidding?
44:53That's not my car.
44:56What the is it?
44:59Oh my God.
45:01That's not my car.
45:02It's a gold Nova.
45:03That's the only other gold Nova that we had.
45:05Can you look at this license plate and just verify if that's true?
45:08That's not my car.
45:08I can tell you right now, I, I, I've had my car for six years.
45:11This is not my car.
45:12Are you kidding me that this is going on right now?
45:14K, Katie.
45:16Katie, come over here.
45:18Let's just, why is this happening?
45:21Okay.
45:22This is as high as Greek drama can go.
45:25So now it's time to totally make Katie's day.
45:27I got to talk to you.
45:29Mm-hmm.
45:30This guy Johnson here, total con man.
45:33Your brother, Scott, big, fat liar.
45:38You are on a TV show called Overhauling.
45:42Your Nova has been made over.
45:44Oh my God.
45:46Oh my God.
45:47The truth is out.
45:50As the cherry goes on the cake, the Nova has been overhauled.
45:54Enjoy, Katie.
45:58Where's my car?
45:59You excited?
46:00Yeah, I want to see my car.
46:02Oh my God.
46:03Oh my God.
46:04Are you kidding me?
46:08Oh my God.
46:11This is not my car.
46:26It doesn't believe, I don't believe that it's my car.
46:30It's safe to say that in one day, Katie has gone through every emotion in the book.
46:49This is so beautiful.
46:51It can't be mine.
46:52Honestly, I have to tell you guys, this is so surreal.
47:00I think you're joking.
47:02I can just...
47:02I...
47:04I think I'm going to have a heart attack.
47:12I'm scared.
47:13Oh my God.
47:14And now after a tough week, Katie's mom can stop with the fibs.
47:19Oh my God.
47:20I can see.
47:22Congratulations.
47:23Thank you so much.
47:25This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.
47:28Oh my God.
47:28Okay, that's...
47:29What kind of answer do I got in that thing?
47:32Oh my God.
47:35Should I take my shoes off?
47:38You can sit inside.
47:38Go ahead, Katie.
47:40Oh my God.
47:42I know.
47:42I'm so sure.
47:43Oh.
47:45Are you kidding me?
47:47Oh my God.
47:48I feel like I'm going to wake up.
47:50This is...
47:51This is so bizarre.
47:55Katie, this shop belongs to a gentleman, Gary Daigle.
47:58Hi, Gary.
47:59Gary hasn't been to bed in about three days.
48:01Oh my God.
48:02Come here.
48:03Thank you so much.
48:05Hi, Katie.
48:05Hi, honey.
48:06Nice to meet you too.
48:08Oh my God.
48:09I can't believe this is happening to me.
48:19What are people going to say when I'm driving this car?
48:23Complete new suspension underneath your car.
48:25Oh my God.
48:27It's been like...
48:28Thank you so much.
48:32I can't, I've just won the lottery.
48:34Thank you so much.
48:39I don't know what else to say except for thank you.
48:42I am so lucky.
48:47This is the best day of my entire life.
48:50My name is Katie and I've truly been overhauled.
48:53Thank you so much.
