00:00That rockabilly punk is our own Chris Jacobs.
00:10That deconstruction expert is our very own AJ.
00:13And that mastermind manning the markers is our very own Chip Foose.
00:17On today's overhauling, Matthew is our mark.
00:19He's the owner of a 1930 Ford Model A,
00:22a rat rod of a hot rod that we're going to make cool in just the right hideout.
00:26And that shop is the one and only hot rod car craft.
00:29With Amy working as our insider.
00:31She's Matt's wife and she'll let us know just the right moves
00:34when it comes to running our mark into mazes and circles.
00:37While Chip and our builders make the ride into one very hot hot rod.
00:40So class, get ready to clap as I get klepto with a classic.
00:44As it makes its way to that place you dream your ride can go,
00:47that state of cool known to car lovers as the experience we like to call overhauling.
00:52Ha ha ha.
00:59That's right.
01:02Matthew is our clueless and hot rod driving mark.
01:21His wife Amy is our all-knowing insider.
01:24Matthew works as a project manager at a glass company.
01:27He's a rat riding kind of guy who dreams of his Model A becoming a one-of-a-kind classic.
01:32For that to happen, we gotta join Chris as he gets ready to go to Matthew's house and steal the ride.
01:39A lot of people have been asking for it and now you're gonna get it.
01:42You want a true hot rod?
01:43Well, how about this?
01:44A 1930 Model A.
01:47Gonna be doing a real hot rod in a hot rod car craft garage.
01:50Let's go steal it, shall we?
01:51Off he goes to get the oldest car we've ever overhauled.
01:54In his best rat rod of a get-up, our man Chris makes like a rat as he crawls into the garage,
01:59gets the door raised, and makes off with the ride thanks to the keys we got from Amy.
02:04It doesn't take long for Chris to fall under the spell of the old car,
02:08cruising up the road in a true and classic hot rod.
02:12Bad hat!
02:13See, he digs it.
02:14How do I know what these guys are talking about, man,
02:17when they say the rat rodder is a lifestyle choice?
02:19It's a choice coming with detachable parts.
02:22Uh-oh!
02:24Well, we won't be needing that anyway, not after we're through with this ride.
02:28Here we go again.
02:30It's morning of day one and Chris just stole the 1930 Ford Model A.
02:34Yeah!
02:35Looks pretty excited, too.
02:38Don't be scared.
02:40It's just a hot rod.
02:42I think I've found my alter ego.
02:44I love this thing.
02:45Should we get the A-Team out here?
02:45I said we get them out.
02:46A-Team is do it!
02:48They arrive to hear the phrase of the day.
02:50Come on, rides, baby.
02:51Oh, yeah!
02:52So what do you think of the condition of the car?
02:54I think that it's got a lot of bond over.
02:57You can see on the interior of the body panels where it's real dented in a lot of places,
03:02but it's smooth on the exteriors, which means there's lots of filler.
03:05Time for Scratch and Ben to look under the hood.
03:08Lost a motor.
03:09So a fun pair of goggles.
03:11Probably needs them because his head fits above the windshield.
03:14You know, got to have some sort of windshield.
03:17With all its cool hot rod voodoo, this ride is unique.
03:20And I'm not just whistling Dixie.
03:21Right, Shane?
03:23Yep.
03:23A lot of surprises in here.
03:25Dirty diaper.
03:26Here's an appropriate analogy.
03:28All right, enough sniffing and more leg lifting.
03:30Let's get this thing inside.
03:32Let's go!
03:33Let's get inside!
03:34It's going into hot rod car craft to be torn down and prepped for the arrival of our team
03:39captain.
03:40And that team captain is Chip Hot Rod Foose.
03:43Matthew's Model A, it seems like a small manageable project, but we hear Chip is excited and who
03:48knows where that will lead us.
03:51Yeah, when you get Foose's gears going on a unique kind of ride, a seven-day build can
03:56be one tough thing to pull off.
03:57And with an authentic hot rod like this, we are all looking to make the thing great.
04:02Our mark has a certain style and the soul of a car lover.
04:06Chip knows the final result needs to be true to Matt's taste and cool enough to take this
04:10forward to a whole new level.
04:13Already, we're pretty sure that this job is going to be a lot tougher than it looks.
04:24Tim-tam.
04:25I'll tell you, deconstruction's going to last about 10 minutes on this thing.
04:28This thing is bare bones.
04:30No stereo, only the windshield as far as glass goes.
04:33No bumpers, no fenders.
04:36This thing will be at Media Blast in about two hours from now.
04:38Not much to blast.
04:41But we are having a blast.
04:43Man, is that guy quick with the win or what?
04:45I tell you.
04:48Don't worry, I got it.
04:49Don't worry about me.
04:50I got it.
04:51Good job, AJ.
04:52As for the rest of our fast-paced gang, they're tearing through this old Ford as though it's
04:56the simplified ride that it is, setting a world-class deconstruction record that just might be one
05:01for the books.
05:02It's a speedy and skillful accomplishment that really does deserve a hand.
05:073 p.m. on day one, and it seemed like it only took five minutes to deconstruct the car, but
05:13the guys are about to pull the body off the frame so we can send it off to the Media Blasters
05:16just so we can see what we're working with.
05:18Uno, dos, tres.
05:19Up it goes and out it goes, making its mark as the smallest, lightest car body in the history
05:24of overhauling.
05:25And by the way, it's also leaving behind one very tiny chassis.
05:30It's kind of all sad and pathetic looking up there all by itself, isn't it?
05:33It's so lonely.
05:34It is, all taken apart like that with everything stripped off of it.
05:38Don't worry, Matt.
05:38It's going to be sweet in the end.
05:40That we can promise you, but first, we need to get the body over to AFCO, where it's joining
05:45some of the other parts and assorted oddities that are about to experience one big blast.
05:50This body's going to change.
05:52As the blasting begins, we can already see that this car has had decades and decades of extensive
05:57paint and extreme bodywork.
05:59And even though this blasting isn't taking very long compared to other overhauling rides,
06:03we're already getting a sense that this old bucket is going to need some serious love,
06:07dimples and all.
06:09Looks like a golf ball.
06:10Four!
06:11One side of the car is okay, but now that I see the other side, never thought I'd say it,
06:17but this car looks like it's got cellulite.
06:20Yeah, but hey, this Model A is over 75 years old.
06:23Tough to look good when you're blasted and now entering the last quarter of a century.
06:28Chip soon arrives to give the team insight on where to begin.
06:31And by the tone of his giddy excitement, we're already getting just a bit worried about our
06:35schedule.
06:369.30, day one.
06:37We've got the car back from Media Blast.
06:39It's exactly what I was expecting.
06:41I heard it was a two-door sedan at one time that somebody had cut the top off.
06:45I knew we'd have some bad bodywork, so we'll have to straighten that out.
06:49This is going to be one cool little car.
06:51Oh boy, he's already got that look that says he's going to do it all to this car and then
06:55some.
06:55Of course, we can quickly see how serious he is as the first order of business becomes
06:59the thinning of the doors.
07:01And along with those doors, the team will also tackle all the panels that need straightening,
07:06all the seams that need welding, and all the bodywork that is going to give this Model
07:10A a whole new lease on life.
07:11This car's not only old, it's also been rigged with a few bits of gear that have no place
07:17on your basic automobile.
07:19For more on that, we check in with Shane and his project at the moment.
07:22What up, Shane?
07:24So right now, we're removing the barn door latches off the car, and they've been double-nutted
07:31with high-quality aircraft hardware.
07:34In layman's terms, these latches are...
07:37Lame.
07:38Lame.
07:40And voila.
07:42One door latch gone.
07:44Given its age, this ride just might receive more bodywork than we've ever put into a car.
07:49The body on this car is in really rough shape.
07:51It's going to require a lot of metal finishing work, a lot of hammer and dollying.
07:55However, the metal is a real heavier gauge than a newer car, so we are able to finesse it
07:59a little bit.
08:00I'd say maybe the next two, three days, we should have this thing in primer.
08:03It's going to be a lot of work, a lot of late nights, but we'll get through it.
08:06Let's just hope that Sean is right.
08:08Morning, it's day two.
08:09We're out in Ontario at Total Cost and Ball.
08:12We're here with Sal and Evan, and I know that we were talking about building this Model A
08:15chassis, but I'm looking at your catalog here, and I really like your 32 rails.
08:20I think the 32 will be a little nicer project.
08:23It'll sit lower and represent more of the hot rod look.
08:26So, Matt, we're going to switch out your Model A rails, and you're going to get a set of
08:2932 rails, which will look a lot cooler.
08:32So, they've got that neat little reveal.
08:33That'll be painted real nice.
08:35Then we're going to put that whole chrome and stainless front suspension in the four-bar
08:38rear.
08:39It's getting very elaborate.
08:40It's not just the Mark who goes through a little bit of a surprise here at Oberhawn.
08:44It's also the Insider, and it's time to bring the Insider out.
08:47It's Amy, it's Matthew's wife.
08:48She's about to see the car in its present state for the first time.
08:51So, Amy, come on out.
08:52Take a look.
08:55Oh, my God.
08:57This is crazy.
08:58Pretty shocking, huh?
08:59A lot to take in.
09:00Yeah.
09:01It's gone.
09:02There's nothing left except the engine.
09:04The lovely Mazda.
09:05Now, tell us a little bit about the car.
09:06Why do you like it?
09:07Why does Matthew like it?
09:09He loves vintage cars.
09:11He loves vintage everything.
09:13He should have been a father in the 50s.
09:14We love this car because it's like our family thing.
09:18After we had our daughter, he had to sell a Harley, and I had to sell my Cutlass.
09:21This became our family car, and we haven't got to use it very much.
09:26Tell me a little bit about maybe what you and Matt were doing to it, would have done to
09:30it.
09:30What we were doing to it was letting it sit in the garage.
09:34What we wanted to do to it was obviously a new engine.
09:37It was pretty embarrassing having people pull up and want to race.
09:40And I'm just so excited because we're actually going to get to drive it now and enjoy it.
09:45Matt, this is my ultimate payback to you.
09:48And I can tell you right now, you're going to be doing lots of dishes for me because you
09:53owe me big time.
09:55Wait till she sees the big time design Chip has for Matthew's hot rod.
09:58Hello, I'm Chip.
10:00Amy, nice to meet you.
10:02Sit down.
10:03This is what I'm hoping to give him.
10:05I'm like so excited.
10:06I can't wait.
10:08It's just so awesome already.
10:10The sketch shows a lot of work ahead.
10:11Hopefully you'll like it.
10:12It's beautiful.
10:13And there it is.
10:15Something like that.
10:17So what do you know about the history of Matt's car?
10:19The only thing we really know about it, I believe it was payment for a debt.
10:23Payment for a debt?
10:24Yeah, there was a man up in Apple Valley that builds hot rods.
10:29And I think this was something he was supposed to be working on.
10:32And then the person ran out of money or something and they just gave it to him.
10:36Oh, wow.
10:36So it was somebody else's project.
10:38Mm-hmm.
10:39And you ended up with it.
10:40We ended up with it because we had an 82 Land Cruiser that we were trying to get rid of.
10:45And we wanted a hot rod, a family car.
10:49So you traded for it.
10:50We traded.
10:51Yep.
10:51Very cool.
10:51Matt, the next couple of days you're going to go through a lot.
10:56And it's not going to be pretty.
10:58But the car is going to be beautiful.
11:01Chris is going to have some fun with you.
11:04Back at total cost involved, the chassis is almost finished and all of the suspension is ready and rocking to go.
11:11Right now we're assembling the rear suspension.
11:13Then it's a move up to the front.
11:15This is a traditional old-style hot rod suspension.
11:21All right, it's 6 p.m. day two.
11:24Sal and the guys worked all day to get our frame done for a Model A.
11:26So we're going to get it out of here, get it loaded up, get it over to Hot Rod Car Craft Garage so we can put the body on it and go from there.
11:32So after our visit to total cost involved, we've got the 32 frame rails, we've got the all-polished and stainless chrome front suspension, we've got a Model A cross member with a monoleaf spring, we've got the 312 wide block in it with the Cruis-O-Matic, we've got the power brake system with all stainless lines, we've got the Ford 9-inch rear with a 4-bar suspension, we're set up so we can put the 32 fuel tank back in it.
11:55Matt, you're going to have a cool little hot rod here.
11:58Man, this has turned into a really big build.
12:03On day two, we all started making the Ford ready for a chassis from total cost involved.
12:08And now as day three begins, we're thinking way up the road knowing that West Coast Customs will want to get their hands on this ride sooner than later.
12:19It's time for Chip to finalize his design.
12:21This car wasn't designed to be a hot rod originally, it was transportation.
12:27Only the well-off could afford a car like this.
12:30It was rare that you even own a vehicle back in those days, especially at the depression just hitting.
12:36Well, Boos is pulling this car way out of its depression.
12:40When I first saw this car when it came in, I knew we had to keep the wheels, the wheels were so cool.
12:45You don't really see a lot of these that often.
12:47Chip's completing a design that is already taking major modification and fabrication.
12:55It's a lot to do in seven days.
12:58Hey, Matt, don't worry, we have your car.
13:00That's what you're getting back on D-Day.
13:02We've got to get busy.
13:06Okay, here we go.
13:06We're going to throw Amy into the fire.
13:08She's about to make a phone call to Matt and let him know that his car has been impounded by the L.A. Sheriff's Department.
13:13Amy, you ready?
13:14Uh-huh.
13:14I'm not nervous, sorry.
13:15I hope so.
13:16I'm totally nervous.
13:17I'm going ready.
13:17Take it away.
13:19Hello?
13:19Matt.
13:20Yeah?
13:21Do you have a minute?
13:23What's up?
13:23Okay, I just got a call from my mom.
13:26She's freaking out right now because she put the car out in the driveway to clean out the garage,
13:30and she went and did an errand and came back, and the car's not there.
13:35What?
13:36It's not there.
13:36I don't know.
13:37I called the cops to report it stolen, and now they're telling me that it's been impounded.
13:41I don't have a clue what's going on.
13:42I don't know, Matt.
13:43They transferred me to some guy named Detective Maynard, and he wants to talk to you, so I gave him your cell phone number.
13:50All right.
13:50Okay.
13:52Bye.
13:52All right.
13:55You okay?
13:56Yeah, see?
13:58When Matthew's car rolled in, he rolled in on the wide whites.
14:01I like that look.
14:01I want to keep it for his car, but I wanted to give him some new tires.
14:04I called Corky Coker out in Tennessee from Coker Tires.
14:07He sent us a variety of tires that I gave him sizes for, so we'll be able to pick and choose and put the right size tire on Matthew's car.
14:14Back with Chris.
14:15Okay, phone prank time, part two.
14:18Amy has set Matt up now with a phone call, letting him know that his car has been impounded.
14:21I'm about to call him back as the L.A. County Sheriff.
14:24Can you try to mess him a little bit?
14:26Hammer time.
14:27Hi, this is Detective Maynard with the L.A. County Sheriff's Station.
14:31Yeah, what happened to my car?
14:32The car was blocking the sidewalk.
14:35Okay.
14:36We did a routine check of both the VIN number and the engine block number, and what happened was that they came up as a non-matching.
14:46I ran the engine block number, and it came back as a hit for being a stolen engine.
14:52What?
14:53Do you have anything you want to tell me about that?
14:55No, I bought it the way it was four years ago.
15:01I don't touch the damn thing on it.
15:03Is this funny to you?
15:04We need to pull the original, who I bought it from, then.
15:08There's going to be two resolutions to this.
15:10Everything's going to turn out fine, or you're going to get your car back, or I'm going to find out that you've been up to no good, generally like you hot-riding types are.
15:18And you and I are going to meet, and it's not going to be a happy union.
15:21You can think of anything else that you want to tell me about either the vehicle transfer form or where you might have gotten that engine.
15:28You call me back.
15:29Sure.
15:31Thank you, Mr. Wyatt.
15:32Okay.
15:33Well, let's put our hammers back in our toolboxes, because you just got nailed, Matt.
15:43Time for Redline.
15:44I'm Shannon from Redline Gaugeworks, and what we're going to do is we're going to hook up Matt's 30 Ford.
15:51We're going to put modern BDO gauge internals, and we're going to use a bones-style font.
15:57All the digits, all the numbers will be little bones.
15:59So I'm going to take these faces off, and we're going to adapt these faces to fit to these meters.
16:05You're going to have the first set of gauges with bones font on a .40 Ford instrument cluster, courtesy of all of us here at Redline Gaugeworks.
16:14Given all the work we have to do, all the metal work that remains, what's your estimate as to when this car can go to home?
16:20We'll be...
16:21You guys need even metal work.
16:22We'll be doing metal work through day five and six.
16:24Uh, doesn't that kind of jeopardize the schedule, sort of?
16:28Well, the number one thing you have to do with a body like this is get it mounted to the chassis.
16:32Until that's bolted down and tight, then you can start adjusting, cutting, and making everything fit.
16:36So the team works to get all the major pieces into place.
16:40It's a job requiring a lot of everything if it's going to get done.
16:43As soon as that task is completed, both of the doors need to be adjusted.
16:47This is a hard and complex puzzle to construct, even for Bruce.
16:53This door is actually an inch shorter than that door.
16:56So we're going to cut it, pull that back, we'll have to add a piece in.
16:59And now we're actually starting to build and fit and make everything work.
17:03Well, this kind of fabrication takes heavy-duty time.
17:06Time that just might have us utilizing some extreme measures here on Overhauling.
17:11Is there a difference of having a car this size versus a muscle car, or does it matter?
17:16It doesn't matter what the size is, it's the amount of work that needs to be done.
17:19It's not take and cut a rusty piece of metal off and then take a new one out of the box and weld them on.
17:24We have to actually design and develop and prototype every part.
17:27If Chip's trying to scare us regarding our seven-day deadline, he's doing one fantastic job.
17:33But in spite of that, Chris insists on seeing the silver lining.
17:37Fortunately, before the car does go to paint, everything will be mocked up.
17:40So reassembly is not going to be as hairy as it usually is on Overhauling.
17:44But you know what? It's still going to come down at the last minute.
17:46Who am I kidding?
17:51What's up? It's prank time here on Overhauling.
17:53My name's Chris. I'll be playing Lloyd today.
17:56We're going to go ahead and call Matthew and get him down here.
17:58Okay, our Mark Matthew thinks he's coming here to simply sign some paperwork and pick up his Model A.
18:03But hey, you know how the gears turn here at the old Overhauling shop.
18:06There's no way we can make it that easy for the man.
18:08Nope, not a chance.
18:12Yeah, hold on a second.
18:13Lloyd!
18:13Lloyd!
18:15Lloyd!
18:17Lloyd!
18:19You want it?
18:20Yeah.
18:22That ain't it.
18:23What do you mean, that ain't it?
18:24That ain't all of it.
18:26Well, what's missing?
18:28The body, the wheels, the rims, the steering wheel.
18:32Let's take a look at this.
18:36Matthew's blood is boiling as he looks at his parts we're not using for our rebuild.
18:40I don't know what to tell you.
18:42I mean, this is how it showed up.
18:46We brought it to you.
18:47Sheriff's Department?
18:48What was it before?
18:50It was being tech, my lady.
18:51I think there was no.
18:52I don't know what to tell you.
18:54I mean, I'm in this position all the time and it sucks.
18:56I understand that.
18:58But it's out of my hands.
19:00Let's just get you signed up.
19:03I ain't signing that.
19:04Somebody's got to sign something?
19:06I don't see.
19:07Yeah, Detective Manor.
19:08This is Matthew Wyatt.
19:09I'm going here at the inbound yard and the car is not intact.
19:13We're going back as soon as possible.
19:15Well, what do you want to do?
19:15You want to just leave it here?
19:18I need all your guys' information.
19:20Yeah.
19:20All right.
19:20Well, let me get yours and we'll go ahead and take care of it.
19:24Let me just go ahead and get you to sign right there.
19:27Oh, man.
19:28We have got to make all this pain worth it for our poor Mark Matthew.
19:32Right down at the bottom.
19:33All you're signing is that this is yours and you're taking it back as is.
19:38Well, I'll take it back as is.
19:39Well, somebody's got to take it back.
19:41I can't keep it.
19:44You're going to get me my poor car outside.
19:46All right.
19:47If it doesn't get out today, I've got to charge $150 a day.
19:51I've got to do that.
19:52Oh, the price that has to be paid for driving one of the coolest cars around.
19:56Sorry, man.
19:57One man in despair, another in search of food.
20:00Hey, you eat lunch yet?
20:02Nah.
20:03They could invite Matthew to lunch, but I have a feeling he's not all that hungry at the moment.
20:08Afternoon on day five, and as you can see, metal work continues.
20:11This car has been one of the most difficult cars we've done here in Overholland.
20:15Did I mention it's day five?
20:17This car is going to paint on day six.
20:19We're a little under the gun here.
20:20Chip passes the torch and brings Metal Master Dave to make a custom windshield.
20:25Well, Dave is probably one of the most talented fabricators in the country, and so I brought
20:31him in knowing that that cast aluminum DaVal windshield need a lot of help, and Dave is really good on the windshield frames.
20:39He did the impression windshield, which is probably, what did you have, about six months in that?
20:44Yeah.
20:44About six months.
20:45Probably six months just making a windshield frame, and it's absolutely gorgeous.
20:50So I brought him in to do an easy one, so he might, you know, kind of relax on the other one.
20:53This piece is going to come in here, and we're going to graft all this in to this piece.
21:00This whole corner will be cut off.
21:01It's precise business making a windshield like this, but Dave is the undisputed master when it comes to taking difficult forms of metal and shaping them into perfection.
21:10And while it's an honor to welcome a member of Chip's Riddler-winning team, remember, Dave, do a great job as you keep in mind that you do not have six months to complete that windshield.
21:19Definitely looking a lot better.
21:21That's great, but it's time to get the full lowdown from Chip.
21:25Quarter to 10 p.m., day five.
21:27We're still fabricating pieces for the body, getting the chassis dialed in, getting everything so that there's no questions left.
21:34And it would probably take us all the way into day six or day seven just getting the metalwork done.
21:38So the decision I made was let's give Matthew a real nice drivable street rod that may just go back to the satin black primer body.
21:47But I didn't want to spend a whole lot of time painting something that wasn't worthy of the paint job.
21:53So we've done something here that if we go to satin black, it's going to be a great car, and Matthew can finish it if he wants to paint it later.
22:00If we do have time, we're going to be able to paint it, and we've got something that overhauling can be very proud of.
22:05All right, we're hanging out in the garage building the hot rod with my friend Chip Foose.
22:13Now, actually, this is overhauling, and it's day six.
22:15We've got a lot more work to do.
22:17And a lot of that work has to do with the stylish and very special customized windshield.
22:21There was actually seven pieces all involved to build this windshield frame.
22:25It's a beautiful piece.
22:26This actually sets this car apart from many, many other hot rods.
22:29I didn't want to just turn out another car that was kind of dangerous on the road.
22:32We're giving Matthew a car back, not just a little rat rod.
22:35And if you think that windshield's tricky, check out this next bit of fabrication.
22:39One of the prime examples of, you know, that this project is all fabrication, you can't just pull a piece off and replace it with a part out of a box, is the hood for the car.
22:49Now, the hood is sitting right here.
22:51It's a flat sheet, but we're going to bend this and make it become the hood.
22:54And when it's all done, it'll look like the hood that would have been produced for the car.
22:59Good morning.
22:59I'm Dave from L&R.
23:01This morning, we're going to put this 312 together.
23:04I've already laid the crank and put the cam and the timing components on it.
23:07And now I'm going to put the rings and the bearings on the pistons so we can go ahead and slug it and get this thing down the road.
23:13Now, this is a 312 cubic inch, a little over 5 liter.
23:17Rating is about 270 horsepower with a 4 barrel on it.
23:21This is an engine a hot rod deserves.
23:23My normal time to assemble an engine is about 3 hours labor.
23:27Now, we're going to put the pan gasket on and get ready to put the pan on it.
23:31And Dave from L&R isn't the only gearhead responsible for all this power.
23:34Our Y-block expert, Rod Olmsted, is also a dude to be thanked for Matt's motor,
23:38putting the hot into our hot rod just as the sand is simply zipping into the bottom of our hourglass.
23:44Okay, Matt, your 312 is ready.
23:46Getting ready to send it back over to the shop for the A-team so they can take care of you.
23:50This is from L&R.
23:51Good luck with it.
23:52From the hand-built engine to the hand-built hood, this whole car is being hand-built.
23:57And sometimes, thanks to Foose, they use tools that aren't even tools at all.
24:02I'm going to try and build a hood here with no flip roll.
24:05That's my flip roll.
24:08The pole.
24:09You're kidding.
24:09Okay, we've seen him make roll bars by dropping pipes onto the ground.
24:14We've seen him make rocker panels out of simple sheets of steel.
24:17But we've never seen him make a hood.
24:19Frankly, we've never seen anybody make a hood here at Overhauling.
24:21And until now, we would never allow ourselves to dream it could just be getting started on day six.
24:27That's pretty decent there.
24:30By now, there's only one way that Chip could amaze us.
24:33And that would be if he ran out of ways to amaze us.
24:36His unique hood now needs a snip here and a cut there.
24:39And before long, it's starting to look just the way he planned it.
24:42But we still need a progress report from Chip if we're going to have any peace of mind about our deadline.
24:47Well, we're getting there.
24:48We were hoping for a little more info than that.
24:51Maybe Sean can fill us in on the details.
24:53End of day six.
24:55Bodywork's just beginning.
24:56Got about 24 hours to have this thing bodywork painted.
25:00Finish up the metalwork, so we better keep moving.
25:03Yeah, they better keep moving as the remaining metalwork and the rest of the bodywork gets done
25:07at the same time on Matthew's 1930 Model A.
25:11That's exactly right.
25:12And as the bulk of the A-Team carry on with all of that hard work,
25:16Chip continues to toil on a singular one-off hood.
25:19It's not every driver who can say that Foose himself made their car hood from scratch,
25:23but Matthew is going to be one of the few who will indeed have that rare privilege.
25:27And even though it looks like Chip is finishing the hood,
25:30there's still a big surprise in store for this part,
25:32another phase that will give it a whole new dimension.
25:36Okay, we've got a hood.
25:37I just need to put the four screws underneath to fix that to the bars.
25:41We've got the body being prepped for paint.
25:43We've got the interior panels being made by Shane.
25:45Craig's working on suspension.
25:46We've got Ben working on the frame.
25:48And we're day seven.
25:50We've got about 36 hours to get this done for Matthew right now.
25:5336 hours?
25:54What the heck?
25:57Chip, where are we at?
25:58Actually, now we're finishing all the surface work.
26:01We'll get this over to the paint shop, get it primered, sanded, and get it painted tonight.
26:04Okay, so now once we get it back from paint,
26:07how long is it going to take to put the car back together?
26:09The good thing is this is probably going to be the easiest car that we'll ever have to assemble.
26:14D-Day actually lasts all the way up until midnight.
26:17True.
26:17So we do have that cushion to get it back to Matthew.
26:20But one way or another, we've got until midnight to even back to Matthew on D-Day.
26:25I'll take that cushion.
26:26Okay.
26:30Okay, it's time to give Matthew a little false hope.
26:34Hello.
26:35Mr. Wyatt.
26:37This is Matthew.
26:38Hi, this is Detective Maynard.
26:41What's up?
26:43Snafu city over here.
26:45At this moment, I got, obviously, your frame and your motor and your interior.
26:50And basically, I'm flashing back to my homicide days in Chicago.
26:55I got everything but the body.
26:58Yeah, I'm telling you.
26:59You haven't found it yet?
27:01I haven't physically found it myself,
27:05but I have some guys out there who say they have the Model A body.
27:10It's going to be in one piece?
27:12That's what we're hoping.
27:13You need to put it back together.
27:15I was running when you guys picked it up.
27:17How about this?
27:18How about if I find it first,
27:19and then I'll get the guys working on it to put it back together for you,
27:22and we can have you come down and pick it up.
27:24All right.
27:25Thanks a lot, Mr. Wyatt.
27:26All right.
27:28You snippy with me?
27:31Want a moment, William?
27:32Want me to take your blankie?
27:33Do something to you, Matt?
27:35Tell you what, bro.
27:36I just made the decision.
27:37You snippy with me on the phone?
27:39I'm going to hammer you one more time before you get your car back.
27:42Hammer you.
27:43Don't cross a man in a blanket.
27:45All right.
27:46It's 11 p.m. on day seven.
27:47We're about to load up the car,
27:49take it over to West Coast Customs,
27:50roll it into paint, finally.
27:53So there it goes.
27:54And once it gets over to West Coast Customs,
27:56the guys quickly move from the custom frame to the custom body,
27:59doing all they can with very little time remaining.
28:02All right.
28:03It's officially D-Day.
28:04We have 24 hours to put this car together,
28:06from the way you see it now
28:07until fully assembled when Matthew gets to see it.
28:10Meanwhile, here comes that other dimension to Chip's hood.
28:14What I'm doing right now is laying out the hole
28:16that will be cut in the hood.
28:18When the car is finished,
28:19it's got this neat little slot in the middle of the hood,
28:22and each one of those air filters
28:23sticking up just slightly through the hole.
28:25Holy hood, I had no idea he was going to do that.
28:28Well, he's doing it as the primer goes on the frame.
28:30And frankly, I think some of the pressure is getting to the guys
28:33because some of them are acting strange, even for them.
28:35But never fear, Sean is here with an update.
28:39It's almost 3 a.m. on D-Day.
28:41As you can see, we're still doing body work
28:42on the actual body of the car,
28:44but we've got to get this body in there,
28:45get it primer real soon.
28:46We're running out of time to get this thing assembled
28:48by the end of the night.
28:51It's 9.30 in the morning,
28:53but on 8.6 and 8.7, it's D-Day.
28:58You heard me.
28:59D-Day.
29:00Yeah.
29:00But fortunately for us,
29:02the chassis is in the paint booth.
29:04Then once the car is painted,
29:05it's a matter of just sticking the body right on the frame,
29:08buttoning up the interior,
29:09and getting it back to Matt on time.
29:10Now, again, this might be the one where we don't make it.
29:13Our friends at West Coast Customs are confused.
29:16I have a question.
29:18Is it today D-Day?
29:19Yeah.
29:22What's going on?
29:24Don't worry, Ryan.
29:25Progress is being made,
29:27especially now that the frame is on its way out of here.
29:29All right, frame's been painted.
29:31It's ready to go.
29:32Let's get this thing over to Hot Rod.
29:33He's right.
29:34It's time to move it to the place
29:35where the guys are eager to make this frame ready for the body,
29:38and that place is Hot Rod Car Craft.
29:41And as soon as that frame is back in the shop,
29:44there is a speedy, high-energy whirlwind of activity.
29:47Most of the focus is all about getting that freshly painted,
29:49newly built Ford 312 Y-Block onto the chassis
29:52from total cost involved.
29:55It's in, bolted in.
29:56All we've got to do is put in a tranny mount.
29:59We're set.
30:00And now we're set for wheels.
30:02Well, we've got Matthew's old rims painted up.
30:04Got the new Coker tires mounted on them.
30:06But they look pretty good, don't you think?
30:07I like.
30:08But Craig, my wheel-loving amigo,
30:10I'm leaving and you got a boogie.
30:11And for more proof of that,
30:13get an earful of this timestamp from AJ.
30:15It's 6.30 p.m. on D-Day.
30:17Chris just took off to do the final prank,
30:19and the guys are finishing up on the rolling chassis.
30:21But we are missing one thing,
30:23the body, which is still at paint.
30:25We literally have five and a half hours
30:27before we have to give this car back.
30:29After the prank.
30:32Detective Maynard calling again.
30:34You got good news?
30:35I got some real good news.
30:37I found the body.
30:39All right.
30:40My partner, Detective Evans,
30:41is down there right now.
30:42He's waiting for you.
30:44I'm running into a little bit of traffic here
30:45on the 710, but I'm en route.
30:48I'll probably be down there
30:49in about 45 minutes or so.
30:50So if you can hustle on down there,
30:52we'll meet you down there
30:53and get this all taken care of.
30:54So that's that.
30:56Matt's on his way.
30:57Car's not done.
30:58Balls are in the air.
31:00Let's see if we can juggle.
31:04And here we go.
31:06What's happening?
31:08What's going on?
31:09Who are you?
31:11Matthew's weary from this goose chase.
31:13That's your car right there?
31:16Part of it.
31:16Our Mark is a no-nonsense hot-rodder
31:18who's tired of the runaround.
31:21Car was like this?
31:22No, hell no.
31:23It's really worth it.
31:25It didn't have any wheels on it?
31:27Hey, Wyatt.
31:28I hope you brought your wallet
31:29because we got a new sheriff in town
31:30and he ain't going to accept checks.
31:31I got to get the hell out of here within five.
31:34You got money, you can get it from this guy.
31:35Somebody's signing this form
31:37and somebody's paying.
31:39Detective Maynard is going to be down here.
31:40Maynard told me he'd be down here an hour ago.
31:43Well, look, it is exactly 829
31:46and you have one minute
31:48until I'm going double time on this piece of s***.
31:50We'll get to you.
31:52Don't you worry.
31:53Look at that.
31:54$150 in exactly 52 seconds.
31:58I got the pen, I got the paperwork.
32:01Let's get down to brass tacks.
32:03Let me get out of here.
32:04We're going to take care of you.
32:04Don't worry.
32:05I'm just waiting for my partner to get here
32:06and he's going to take care of the whole thing.
32:08I'm new to the detective
32:10and I've been working stolen cars and stuff.
32:13I haven't seen anyone like this before.
32:15This is pretty wild.
32:16It just seems so weird to me
32:18that you sure you're not being set up
32:21or anything like that?
32:22It just doesn't seem like everything's all in a row here.
32:26Something's going on.
32:28It's just weird that now this is all that's left of your car
32:30and it's been gone for a week
32:31and you haven't gotten it back.
32:33You've been dealing with a bunch of Yahoo detectives
32:35on the phone.
32:36Where'd the rest of the car go?
32:38What could have happened to it?
32:39Do I look like a police officer?
32:41Honestly, do I look like a police officer?
32:44Does anybody look like a police officer?
32:46For all Mr. Wyatt knows,
32:47I might not be a police officer.
32:49For all Mr. Wyatt knows,
32:50I might be the host of a hidden camera television show
32:52that he's on right now.
32:54You're kidding, right?
32:56You tell me.
32:57You think he's kidding?
32:59I don't know.
32:59I just want a car.
33:01Would it make you happy if that was the truth?
33:02Hell yeah.
33:03Well, you're on overhauling, man.
33:09Yeah, baby!
33:14Chip Foose and his A-team
33:16have turned your car
33:17into probably the most beautiful hot ride
33:19that I've ever seen
33:20and that you're about to see in a little while tonight.
33:23You happy?
33:24You'll have me now?
33:25First time you smiled all week, huh?
33:27Yeah.
33:27She's psyched?
33:28Yeah.
33:28Should we head up there and check it out?
33:30Yeah.
33:31All right, let's get back up to Hot Rod Car Craft
33:33and change Matt's life a little bit.
33:35Not so fast, Chris.
33:37I don't even want to tell you what time it is.
33:39It's late on D-Day.
33:41We ain't stopping until this thing's done.
33:43It's ready to go in the paint booth.
33:44Finally!
33:45This car's going to be amazing
33:47when it's all put back together.
33:48It will be amazing
33:49and once it's in the booth
33:50it's hit with Hot Rod White
33:52on the grill and under the car.
33:54One more touch
33:54that's putting this ride over the top.
33:57All goes smoothly
33:57but soon comes the report
33:59we've never heard here on Overhauling
34:00and frankly,
34:01we never thought we would hear it.
34:04Well, it's official.
34:06It's 12.02 a.m.
34:10E-Day.
34:11The day after D-Day
34:12and the car, as you can see,
34:15is still in the paint booth.
34:16We missed.
34:17What can we say?
34:18We're not perfect, you know?
34:20We're human.
34:21We're just a bunch of guys
34:23building a hot rod.
34:24Okay, but everybody here now knows
34:26that there's a new plan afoot.
34:28We are going to make this
34:29the most rockin'
34:30and the most rollin' hot rod
34:31the world has ever seen.
34:32If it's gonna be late,
34:33it's gonna be worth it.
34:35And there's not a single person present
34:36who's thinking anything but that.
34:38Well, except Chris.
34:39I think his pineapple pizza just arrived.
34:42Oh no, I'm here and on the job.
34:44As Chip and Sean team up
34:45with the paint guns
34:46to get this ride to Matthew
34:47even faster than ever.
34:49They hit all of the body parts
34:50and before long,
34:51they know that matters
34:52will soon be dry enough
34:53to allow a little unwrapping.
34:54It's gonna be a peeling
34:55that's revealing
34:56a classic red and white checkerboard.
34:58A firewall pattern
34:59that says
35:00Pure American Rockabilly Hot Rod.
35:03Chip sprays on the clear coat
35:04as we all try to get
35:05as much sleep as we can
35:06with E-Day presenting
35:08a unique, one-of-a-kind
35:09overhaul and reveal.
35:10What time is it?
35:144.40 a.m.
35:16We're still alive.
35:17We're still moving.
35:18We're crawling,
35:19but we're still moving.
35:20Car's been painted.
35:21We're gonna pull it
35:21out of the paint booth now,
35:23get it on the chassis,
35:24get it over to Hot Rod Car Craft,
35:25button it up,
35:26assemble it,
35:27finally give it back to Matt,
35:29put this episode to bed,
35:30and then we'll all go to bed.
35:32The cars rushed
35:33to Hot Rod Car Craft
35:34to begin the fastest
35:35reassembling overhaul
35:36and history.
35:37The parts go on
35:38and Chris fills us in
35:39on the rest.
35:40Well, now the thrash begins.
35:42The car's back here
35:43at Hot Rod Car Craft
35:44and the A-Team
35:45is gonna do everything
35:46they can to get this thing
35:47together as quickly as possible.
35:48The guys from Bill Dunn
35:49are on their way over here.
35:50They're gonna get the interior in,
35:51get the grill cover on,
35:53the plexiglass inserts
35:54and the Duvall-style windshield,
35:56the hood on.
35:57We gotta get the shifter in,
35:58put all the dash components in,
36:00get the doors on,
36:01and we'll bring Matt
36:02and make him the happiest
36:03Hot Roder in all California.
36:05Right before our eyes,
36:07it quickly becomes
36:07the coolest-looking
36:08little Hot Rod
36:09you have ever seen.
36:10It's hard to think of a ride
36:11that can make you smile
36:12like this one does.
36:14That's just plain fun.
36:15It's just plain fun
36:16that is taking a lot
36:17of hard work.
36:18But since Chip and the team
36:19prepped everything
36:19to absolute perfection,
36:21it's all coming together
36:22quickly and smoothly.
36:24With all due respect
36:25to Matthew's old Model A,
36:27we've now made a car
36:28out of something
36:28that was pretty darn close
36:30to a go-kart.
36:30It's become a family ride
36:32that has a strong frame,
36:33a solid body,
36:34and an engine
36:34that can take this Ford
36:35anywhere it wants to go.
36:37On top of all that,
36:38it's just plain cool,
36:40now getting its interior
36:41thanks to Bill Dunn.
36:43Now for the moment of truth.
36:45Matt, congratulations
36:46on being overhauled.
36:47Good morning.
36:48And it's E-Day.
36:49You're the first person
36:50to have E-Day,
36:51which is extra day
36:52because we didn't make it
36:52on D-Day.
36:53Making a little overhaul
36:54on history.
36:55But that should say
36:56something to you
36:57because this one
36:57is probably the most
36:58intensive build we've ever done
37:00here on overhauling.
37:01You ready to see your car?
37:01Yeah.
37:02Should we give it a run?
37:03Let's go check it out.
37:04Let's do it.
37:05This is going to be good.
37:07All right, Matt,
37:07you ready for your life
37:08to change?
37:09Yeah.
37:10Go ahead and look.
37:18It's beautiful.
37:26Our insider told us
37:28that Matthew's
37:29quite the talker,
37:30so by rendering
37:30the man speechless,
37:31we're pretty sure
37:32we've delivered the goods.
37:34What's your first impression?
37:35It's not mine.
37:38To put it in a word,
37:40our man Matthew
37:40is stunned.
37:42How you feeling right now?
37:44I died and went to heaven.
37:47It's definitely
37:48hot rider heaven right here.
37:49That's it.
37:51That is it.
37:52And wait till he hears
37:52what's in it.
37:53A 312 wide block
37:57now rides behind
37:58that radiator
37:59and Coker tires
38:00are going to roll
38:00thanks to that
38:01rebuilt engine.
38:02It's all railed
38:03and framed up right
38:04thanks to total cost involved
38:05and we're still trying
38:06to get Matthew
38:07out of his awestruck days.
38:09Anything in particular
38:10jumping out at you?
38:11There's about
38:11150 custom pieces
38:14on this.
38:14Yeah.
38:17Everything.
38:18A dream come true.
38:21I couldn't have done this.
38:23No way.
38:26Exactly what I envisioned.
38:28He's presently a man
38:30of few words
38:30but his words
38:31are well chosen.
38:33That's beautiful.
38:35Part of what's beautiful
38:36is what Bill Dunn
38:37has accomplished
38:37with the interior
38:38and Redline Gauges
38:40helped to make
38:40that dashboard
38:41one amazing work of art.
38:42And speaking of art,
38:44here come our artists
38:45eager to meet
38:46the man of the hour.
38:49Quite rightfully,
38:50the guys are really
38:50proud of this one
38:51and they want to make sure
38:52that Matthew sees
38:53every single modification.
38:54So, um, just
38:56really, like,
38:58get down
38:59and look under there.
39:00Oh, man.
39:02This eight-year-old
39:03hot rod, Matt.
39:04That's beautiful.
39:05There's too many things
39:06to look at under there.
39:09From under to inside,
39:11it's time to meet
39:12those Bill Dunn dudes.
39:13Oh, sweet.
39:15Nice to meet you.
39:16Ben over here
39:16had to cut the seat.
39:18This is a custom design
39:19by Chip Fools.
39:20He wanted that contour
39:21on that seat
39:22towards the bottom.
39:23Enjoy it.
39:24Congratulations.
39:25It's all a lot
39:26to take in
39:27all at once.
39:30It had charm
39:31when it arrived
39:32but now you don't need
39:33gentle words like charm
39:34to describe it.
39:35In fact,
39:35like our former Mark,
39:36we're finding that words
39:38really can't describe it.
39:39It's become a show car,
39:41the kind that hot rodders
39:42dream about,
39:43a ride that's still
39:44dazzling Matthew.
39:45What do you think, Matt?
39:46What are your thoughts?
39:47Outstanding.
39:49Just to think about
39:49less than six hours ago
39:52this thing was in the paint booth.
39:55Matt is filled
39:56with gratitude.
39:59Doesn't do it justice.
40:03If I cut off a finger
40:05for each one of you
40:05I'd do it for you.
40:06I mean, I'm just,
40:07all right, let's go.
40:09I can drive the stubs.
40:12Thanks, guys.
40:13You're welcome.
40:14Every single one of you.
40:18Matt, there's one person
40:21in particular
40:21that made this happen for you.
40:24Thanks.
40:25You're welcome.
40:26I love you.
40:27Thank you, too.
40:27Do you like it?
40:37I couldn't tell.
40:39For the first time
40:40in your life
40:40you had nothing to say.
40:45This is beautiful.
40:47He was short on words,
40:49but he sure knows
40:50what to say
40:50when it's time
40:51to take his ride.
40:52My name's Matt.
40:58I've just been overhauled.
40:59Yeah.
41:00Woo!
41:10Okay, so we finally
41:11missed our deadline,
41:12but guess what?
41:13We'd do it again
41:14for a car this cool.
41:15And yes,
41:16we are going back
41:16to our grueling
41:17seven-day build
41:18when you see us here
41:18next time
41:19where the owner gets tricked
41:20and the car gets tricked out
41:21all going down
41:22on overhauling.
41:24Oh, and Matt,
41:24take us out of here,
41:25will you, buddy?
41:26Chip, thank you very much.
41:51What's up?
41:57What's up?
41:57What's up?
41:58Well, what's up?
41:58Here we go.
42:01Just as soon as you can,
42:01I'm going to stand out
42:02on the other side,
42:04and I'll come back to you
42:04and we'll be right back.
42:05Come back.
42:06We're going back.
42:07And then you go back to your house
42:08because we should kick
42:10the road.
42:11How do you think ?
42:12That's right.
42:13Okay?
42:14I'll be right back.
