00:53Now, before we go even one inch further on Overhauling, let's check out this heist.
00:58We stole the car today from Rick Garcia, the owner of a 1967 Buick Skylark.
01:03That's right. Now, Rick got the car from his brother Robert, who's our insider.
01:07Robert's an Iraq war veteran, and once we took off with the ride, older brother Robert gave little Ricky an earful about the missing car.
01:14Now, we know that this is two brothers having a conversation.
01:17Actually, we like to think of it more as a rap session, one dude to another.
01:22So, we set up hidden cameras in the garage where Rick parks his Buick.
01:27Alright, well, here we go.
01:28We're cutting it close.
01:29That's Rick's car right there. He's upstairs.
01:31He's leaving in five minutes for work. We're gonna do this.
01:33Yeah. Unfortunately, though, we have his keys and we're about to steal his car, so he's gonna be a little bit disappointing when he gets down to the garage this morning.
01:39If he doesn't hear this car pulling out, then he's deaf, man.
01:49Now, let's see what happens when our insider Robert helps our Mark Rick discover that the car is missing.
01:55Dude, tell me you didn't leave the car unlocked.
01:58I locked the damn car. They can't get in there, man.

03:41So once the car arrives at Foreign Auto Body, it's time to meet the A-Team.

04:28So with everyone here, there's a lot of reaction to the car.

04:33It only takes a quick glance to see that this Skylark needs some major work.
04:38To put it nicely, the body is junk.
04:40And the interior?
04:41Well, it simply doesn't exist.
04:43It needs a bit of work, huh?
04:48I think we've seen enough.
04:49We know how bad it is.

04:58You know, Rick didn't leave us a whole lot of clues in his car, indicating, you know, his personality.
05:04The glove box is not existing, but he's got some dice here hanging from the rear view mirror.

05:13His Tijuana blanket, which I'm wondering if this is going to be incorporated into the final design.
05:18There's been a lot of damage done and a long way to go in the interior.

05:33And, uh, tear this thing apart and get started.

05:46Foose quickly takes the lead, delegating jobs for the massive task at hand.

06:00Faster than fast, it's immediately obvious.
06:10The body is in worse shape than we thought.
06:13You can see, actually, right here where the molding kind of attaches itself to the sheet
06:18metal of the car.
06:19And you're not going to get a grade A paint job if you leave any of that in there.
06:22You've got to get it down to the metal so you can sand it all down, shoot the paint directly
06:26on the metal, and you're not shooting over any old trim at all.
06:30Let's see what the audio guys from Kickr have in store for us.
06:37The room around campus, it's going to be off the hook.
06:40All right, so I heard that Kickr wants to put in a Mac Daddy stereo system for Rick.

06:47We want to make this thing thump.
06:48So we're going to build a back seat out of woofers for this car.
06:51We're going to put approximately 4,000 watts of power, probably two TV screens, a DVD player.
06:56The custom speaker box is going to take a lot of work.
06:59But wisely thinking ahead, the Kickr Squad got an early start.

11:27So while Chris works the prank end of matters, the A-Team is removing the engine and the transmission
11:33from Rick's old Buick Skylark.
11:35Rick, can you believe that this engine and this car is gonna be the most beautiful Buick
11:42Skylark you've ever seen in just six more days?
11:45There's a lot of expectation on everyone's shoulders.
11:49And speaking of pressure, time to mix the pressure with the solution and blast those front rails clean.
11:54On day two, Robert comes by to visit, checking out the car he handed over to his brother Rick.
12:03Oh man.

12:06You think you'd like that?
12:09Hell yeah.
12:11Well, we finished up day one.
12:13We got the bumper completely aligned exactly where we want it, tucked up nice and close,
12:17nice tight gaps with the body and the grill.
12:20So today we'll be getting some sheet metal so we can actually cap this in as a V.
12:25We'll leave this open all the way through here so it'll almost give it that split bumper type look.
12:30And so the goal for today is to get all the metal work done on this baby
12:35and get her off to the chrome plate or hoping by the morning of day three.
12:39Of course, before anyone can start talking about getting brand new chrome on any kind of bumper work,
12:52Chip and Matthew need to fire it up and get into some good old fashioned heavy metal.
12:57Now some have to ask, why?
13:00Why so much work for such a seemingly small detail?
13:03The subtle detail of doing something like this to the bumper is kind of the comparison of costume jewelry to real jewelry.
13:13You know, the right eye can see it.
13:16Rick, I don't know if you realize how truly lucky you are.

13:59but yet he's so young that he wants to do a lot of energetic stuff like kids his age.

14:38Now that they've used this very strong chemical to strip the paint down.
14:42You can see how much body putty has been used on this car.
14:45Quite a bit.
14:46Especially in the passenger side rear quarter right here.
14:49Couldn't really tell with that primer-ish kind of paint on it.
14:51But now that that's all stripped off.
14:53You can see there's been a whole lot of body work done.
14:56Mostly filled in with body putty.
14:58So you got to get rid of that.
15:00Replace the sheet metal.
15:02Make it all nice again.
15:04Get back to Richard in top condition.
15:08Whew.
15:09That stuff is strong, man.
15:11Later, Memory Lane loaned us an old Buick Skylark for a mock-up.
15:18All right.
15:19Well now that we have our mock-up, let's get to work.
15:22It looks like it was made for this car.
15:35We're going to put two 1500 watt amplifiers to drive your 10-inch woofers.
15:40One on each side.
15:41And a 790 watt amplifier driving your four speakers that are in the car.
15:45We'll have another Optima battery underneath.
15:47And everything's going to be protected by monster cable fusing and power distribution, which will be visible.
15:51And then we're going to light the whole thing up with Varad LEDs.
15:54I think it's going to be awesome.
15:55I can't wait to see your face when you get this.
15:57It's going to be bidget.

16:02We've taken one of our speaker grills.

16:05And we've cut it into pieces.

16:11Steve is going to modify the firewall so it can match the exterior of the car.

16:18He's making this plate for the firewall and it's absolutely perfect.

16:26Enough to want to report from the owner of this shop, A-Team Ace, Jeff Moorfield.
16:30How are you feeling about the progress so far?
16:32We just power washed the front frame horns so that we can paint that black because Bear's coming in tomorrow.
16:38So the air ride guy's got to have all their suspension back in and we've got to have the front frame horns painted so Bear can mount the brakes up.
16:46We're waiting on the rear end.
16:48Rear end's coming tonight and we've got to put a floor pan in.
16:51All this is happening tonight?
16:53Exactly.

16:55Insane is more likely.
16:57Trying to get all that done in one short and brutal night.
17:00And as if that wasn't enough to worry about, now they're finding nothing but a load of rust in that old trunk.
17:06Just how bad is the bad news?
17:08Well, the plan now is to totally replace the bed of the trunk.
17:15Bumper to bumper, this place is crawling with activity.
17:18And Matthew works long into the night on his soon-to-be re-chromed creations.
17:28But holy cow, let me just say it's the end of day two and it has been one hellacious journey through this bumper ordeal.

17:48This Skylark chugged in with no real interior to speak of.
17:53So it's a good thing we have the team from Fast Eds.
17:55The crew who do and re-do when the ride arrives and the inside is naked.
18:00Yeah, we're gonna take the seats, you know, make the covers, make them look a little different than what they were originally.
18:07Other plush-looking installations will include matching custom door panels made from scratch here at Fast Eds.
18:13We're ready to go.
18:18Okay, good thing we have a group here who never stops.
18:21Because there's no time to put down the tools or shut off the machines.
18:24It's a rush to finish the main body so they can get it over to paint sooner than later.
18:30Alright, well I've been doing a little cleaning up back here, cleaning some of the rubber sealant that goes around the back window glass.
18:36And I've discovered something that's a little bit disturbing.
18:39There is a lot of rust on the whole rear panel of this car.
18:43We can have it all the way along this.
18:45Now they do make this panel, but even though we can replace it,
18:49we have another at least 68 hours of metal work just to replace this panel.
18:53So we're discovering things when we go along breaking this car down and down.
18:58It's given us in a lot worse shape than we originally picked it.
19:02The team works into the night, but they still have a long way to go to get rid of all that rust.
19:07We need to do the filler work and finish both quarters and get this thing primered.
19:13And we're running out of time on day three.
19:16When we come back, the pranks and the plots just get wilder.
19:20On days two and three of this overhauling build, we talked to Rick on the phone, telling him that the search is on for his Buick Skylark, the one he stole from him.
19:41We were able to swipe his ride because we're tight with his brother Robert.
19:45Now remember, Robert is the one who gave Ricky the car initially.
19:47And now the build of the car continues and the search of the car continues, in Rick's mind anyway, figuring that he'll hear more as the investigation unfolds.
19:56And he will. And as day four begins, one thing is certain at the halfway point. We've only just begun to mess with this dude.
20:04This is Chuck Brutzman, the alter ego of Chip Foose.
20:08Our good friend Chuck is going undercover for today's phone prank, while Chris will be calling the mark in his best Al Pacino scar face voice.
20:15All right, here we go. I'm going to make the prank call to Ricky.
20:27Well?
20:28Let me talk to Ricky.
20:30Yeah, this is him.
20:31Ricky, you don't know who I am, but I know who you are, man. I got your car. You know what I'm talking about?
20:36Yeah.
20:37Listen to me very carefully right now, okay?
20:40All right.
20:41There is a phone booth at the mobile gas station. You know where that is?
20:46Yeah, yeah, I know where that is.
20:47In exactly five minutes, that telephone is going to ring, man. If you ever want to see your car again, you pick up that phone. You got me?

20:59Okay, has this dude seen Scarface a few too many times or what?
21:04So the next phase is about Ricky getting to that payphone and waiting for our call.
21:08All is our hidden cameras along with Chuck waiting the wings.
21:14All right, here we go. So I'm going to call on the payphone.
21:23Hello?
21:24Is this Rick?
21:25This is Ricky. Who's this?
21:26You don't worry about who this is, man. I'm just worried about who you are.
21:30Why don't you settle your debts, man?
21:32What?
21:33You make a deal and then you don't come through? You make me come out to your house and steal your car from you?
21:39All right then. If you think I have a debt, how much do I owe you? How much do I owe you?
21:43Why do you think it's money, man?

21:47You took something from me. I took something from you. When you give it back to me, I give your car back. You got that, man?
21:53Listen to me, Ricky, very carefully. You got 48 hours to settle your debt or you're never going to see your car again. Comprende? You got 48 hours, okay? Goodbye.
22:06And as a bonus prize prank, in his confused state, Rick doesn't even realize that Chuck is actually trying to sell him his own Fender off his Buick Skylark.
22:19I have a Fender. It's pretty. You like the color? Detective McKay.
22:28Yeah, this is Ricardo. You said you were going to help me out. My brother's a Marine.
22:32Oh, yeah, yeah. Mr. Garcia.
22:34Right, right, right. I just got a phone call to pay for it at the corner of my house. It's from some guy supposedly I owe money or something like that.
22:43Did he tell you what his name was?
22:44Nah, he just said, give me what I wanted.
22:47This is what I'm going to do. I'm going to try to run a trace on that line. I'm not sure it's going to be successful since he called you from a private line.
22:53Maybe if he calls you again, maybe tell him, okay, I have whatever you want now and, you know, let's meet somewhere to do the exchange and then we could, you know, set him up and do a sting like that.

23:16The boys from Bear Brakes and Air Ride rush to finish up the side of the car that zooms closest to the street.
23:21Because to be a safe and classic lowrider, you don't just have to stop on a dime.
23:25You also need the kind of airbags that'll make a one-off custom like this simply float down the road.
23:30Okay, that just about wraps up the rear end install.
23:33We just got to plumb the brake lines yet.
23:36We got the Air Ride all installed.
23:38Basically, it just replaces the coil spring with an airbag, put a little shorter shock on it.
23:43Have fun with it, Rick.
23:45Hi, Rick.
23:46As you can see, your drums are gone.
23:49Now you have a 13-inch track system in the front.
23:52Stop on a dime and give you nine cents change.
23:55So with daylight fading, the team wraps up the bodywork and finally, finally heads out to paint.
24:02We're off to the paint.
24:04We need to primer the bodywork that's the last bit and then we're going to paint the firewall.
24:11After the big push, they tape up the car and roll it in to be primed.
24:18And it happens fast.
24:21These dudes are prime primed guys.
24:24Welcome to Foose's Kitchen.
24:27Maybe if we're nice, he'll tell us what's cooking.
24:30It's clear, pearl, and then candy dyes, yellow and orange.
24:35Chip insists on finding the perfect color.
24:37Even if it means a few dozen tries, many discarded gallons of stuff he's not happy with,
24:42and a truckload of those precious and highly valuable stirring sticks.
24:46But after enough mixing, Foose always finds the exact colors he wants.
24:50When I talked to Robert about Ricky earlier this week, I asked him what Ricky's favorite colors were
24:56and what he thought he might do to the car one day if he had ever finished it himself.
25:03And he told me he likes silver greens, which is really close to this tangerine color we have here.
25:11But he also told me he liked copper colors.
25:13People ask us, does Foose always need to do such a complete rendering of the car?
25:17After all, he does a few sketches to get there.
25:20Can't the A-Team figure things out from those?
25:22Well, all we can say is that the finished drawings are like fuel.
25:25And Chip knows how to motivate the crew.
25:27There's your car, Ricky.
25:31Steve starts spraying off the detachable body parts.
25:34It's 6 o'clock in the morning.
25:36Everybody fell out sleeping.
25:38I'm the last one up.
25:40So, I'm getting ready for this.
25:43Well, it's about noon on day five.
25:49We're prepping the front suffering of the car to drop the motor in here in a few minutes.
25:53With Rick's old engine totally reworked, it's time to start getting the power back into the mix.
25:58It's going to take some reassembly so the car can begin its journey to a paint scheme that's a little more elaborate than your average two-tone.
26:06These layers are going to have a little complication thrown in.
26:09Chip picked a four-stage color, so we're putting base and then the pearl and then a little bit of candy and a clear.
26:16So, we have to do that on every process, on the jams and the hinges.
26:21We have to get the whole front end bolted on because once we get it based, all the gaps have to fit properly.
26:28And then we start laying out the graphics down the side.
26:47It's going to be a colorful night.
26:49Guys like Chip, Steve and Jeff understand the whole masking process.
26:53Old school.
26:54A lot of guys painted graphics on top of the car.
26:57New school.
26:58The graphics are fused in as the whole paint job starts.
27:02All right, first coat's done.
27:07We have to have this ready in two days.
27:11This team knows what needs to be done, and they will do it.
27:15Well, Fast Eddie hooked us up with these fantastic seats.
27:18I guess it's my job now to see how we can get these seats actually fastened down to the floorboards.
27:25Kind of scratching my head.

30:32Whichever the case, the team from Fast Ed's moves their interior unit here to Foreign Auto Body to work alongside the rest of the gang.

33:58and kind of a copper tone and we'll be able to untape that lay out the scallop
34:03and get the top painted silver and then we start clearing this thing first chip
34:08gives himself that base by applying that white then it's the yellow hue that makes
34:12it on the scene orange comes next and we're starting to see the fire the heat
34:17begins tipping off with that red kissing the high flames copper touches reconnect the
34:22graphics to the main color of the car and then Jeff steps in with all that
34:26silver as a graphic behind the flames once more the brothers step in to check
34:30out the progress of Rick's ride
34:34that's it for the base the next comes the glittery stuff
34:41right now I've just thrown some flakes with a little bit of like prismatee like a
34:46little rainbow flakes I think it's time to put a little magic on this thing and a little bit of dust and be done with it
