00:00:00We're here in the city of Austin, home of a whole lot of cool Texans, a pop music icon,
00:00:13and the greatest pro cyclist the world has ever known.
00:00:16But today, it's not about his bike. It's his run-down goat.
00:00:19And when we steal and recreate that car, we're going to make one incredible ride,
00:00:23both for his songstress girlfriend and for him, a true champion.
00:00:26It's a Grammy Award-winning and quite sneaky Sheryl Crow helping us trick out a GTO
00:00:32as we trick the legendary Lance Armstrong.
00:00:34It's all going down in a Lone Star way as we give you a Texas-sized special edition of Overhauling.
00:00:40Woo!
00:00:45I am gasoline.
00:00:49That's right.
00:00:50Hey, I'm Courtney.
00:01:09I'm Chris.
00:01:09And we all know her.
00:01:12She's Sheryl Crow, our insider for this main stage gig,
00:01:15assisting us as we grab a needy GTO with a little help from this guy.
00:01:19He's John Koryuth, a.k.a. College,
00:01:21another of our insiders who's best friends with a dude that millions on this great big planet like to call Bike Boy.
00:01:27And there's Bike Boy.
00:01:28He's our mark, the one and only Lance Armstrong.
00:01:31And his girls Sheryl and College are going to spend the next seven days scheming with Overhauling,
00:01:35keeping Lance in the dark as our A-team both takes and remakes Lance's sorry excuse for a GTO.
00:01:41Wow, those are some insiders and one incredible mark.
00:01:44So let's pedal on over to Lance's and snake his not-so-award-winning four-wheeled vehicle.
00:01:53Hey, Lance.
00:01:54Should have never given me the code to your garage because I'm about to steal your car.
00:01:57Now that's what friends are for.
00:01:59Like a pro heist meister, College jumps right in and nabs his pal's ride.
00:02:03Here we go.
00:02:08Here we go is right as College peels out and a trio of Overhauling thieves are waiting just up the road.
00:02:14Well, Lance, sorry to begin this week by putting you through this.
00:02:19I'm not sorry.
00:02:21College picks up Courtney in a GTO that is one big and build-filled week ahead of him.
00:02:29This is going to be a good build.
00:02:30Great team.
00:02:32I think they may be coming down the road right as we speak.
00:02:34So let's get set up for their arrival.
00:02:38And thanks to our monster truck from Passport, my partners in crime are more than set up right.
00:02:46How do you like being a car thief?
00:02:47I love it.
00:02:49We've got the car.
00:02:50We've got the A-team.
00:02:50And that's our passport to Overhauling it.
00:02:52Let's get along, baby.
00:02:54Let's go.
00:02:58We're back here at Colvin Automotive in Austin, Texas.
00:03:01We're going to get this bad boy into the garage and start tearing it apart.
00:03:05So now it's into Colvin's shop and into the hands of a very special A-team.
00:03:09A well-selected gang of specialists who know just what to do with an old and stubborn goat.
00:03:14And for you few non-GTO fans, even you folks can figure out how car history has taken the
00:03:23title of GTO and twisted it into that near-anagram of a nickname.
00:03:27All right, so now it's in our hands.
00:03:37Lance's dusty and ratty wreck.
00:03:39So let's meet the A-team, the crew that's going to do all they can to put this singer
00:03:42and this cyclist into one seriously screaming GTO.
00:03:46Casey Colvin owns and runs our awesome Austin Overhauling headquarters, known as Colvin Automotive.
00:03:52Also on our stellar A-team is Steve Chapo, a king of a car guy who can take a broken
00:03:57down ride and make it mighty.
00:03:59Roy Pigford is a world-class builder of custom rides, creator of some of the coolest cars
00:04:03you will ever see in your life.
00:04:05If it's about cars, Tony Genti from Original Parts Group knows just what to do, and he
00:04:10brought the whole gang from OPG so we can do this GTO right.
00:04:14Guys like another overtime overhauler, Jeff Farina, a dude who's bringing his toolbox and
00:04:19getting out his gear.
00:04:20Also from OPG is George Lopez, and this big build is going to be all the better for it.
00:04:25Paint artist Richard Wood is present and accounted for, ready to take the outside of this ride
00:04:30and do what it takes.
00:04:32Clocking in the long hours will be Jim Griffin, a custom interior master who's going to be
00:04:36burning the midnight oil.
00:04:37And with that big brain and that pack of pencils, Team Captain Chip Foose is on board, ready to
00:04:43turn this into one Texas-sized makeover of a ride.
00:04:47Okay, we know the gang, we know the car.
00:04:49Let's bring them together for one huge and happening overhauling.
00:04:52But before they can take the GTO apart, Chip reminds the team about our champ of a mark.
00:04:58He's a master cyclist who not only beat cancer, but he also set up a foundation to continue
00:05:03the fight for others, represented by those famous yellow, live-strong wristbands.
00:05:08I think we're all going to band together.
00:05:10And like people around the world, we'll all be wearing those bands as we build, honoring
00:05:14Lance and his work as we work to give a little back to a very giving guy.
00:05:18And that great time begins as the A-team gets their first good look at Lance's GTO.
00:05:24Inspecting every inch, these guys don't know what they're going to find.
00:05:28Look at the A-team, they're all surveying the car.
00:05:32Mines are ticking.
00:05:36Gathering the guys, Chip writes up the list of who will be accountable for what.
00:05:40And the air, we've got Rick on the alarm.
00:05:43Is that Gary coming in?
00:05:44It's Gary, he's coming in from ATS.
00:05:46What are you guys' names from Butler?
00:05:48Angel.
00:05:49Is he on the interior?
00:05:50This is Jim Griffin.
00:05:51Jim and his boys.
00:05:52So as Chip finally finishes with the list-making, our awesome A-team is eager to get on.
00:05:57Live strong.
00:05:58Live strong!
00:05:59All right, so these are the Butler brothers, our motor guys.
00:06:04Let's take Lance's GTO to the dyno and see what she does.
00:06:07Colvin's dyno is going to give us the truth, telling us what we're getting rid of as the
00:06:11Butlers prepare a whole new motor for Lance's GTO.
00:06:17All right, biker boy, let's see if your car is as fast as you are.
00:06:21Let's see if we can do this baby.
00:06:23This baby is running a little rich, making a fog of smog as the stats roll in.
00:06:31The combination of heat and exhaust, doom.
00:06:34Woo!
00:06:35Kill on us, man!
00:06:36Oh!
00:06:36All right, Casey, what was the horsepower?
00:06:38Well, it looks like we're just under 200 horsepower.
00:06:42That's not as bad as we anticipated.
00:06:44No, we expected 150.
00:06:45This is actually better than we thought.
00:06:46Wow, okay.
00:06:48But with the new motor, we're expecting it's going to do about 350 horsepower?
00:06:52Yep, 350.
00:06:53Okay.
00:06:54To the ground.
00:06:55Then it's really going to be Lance Armstrong style.
00:06:58Absolutely.
00:07:00Lance, you've got cool friends.
00:07:01Chip, you're going to give me a complete word that you're going to restore this car back to its original state, right?
00:07:07I'll give you a word.
00:07:09Not.
00:07:10This is overhaul.
00:07:11Lance will get tricked, and the car will get tricked out.
00:07:14Okay.
00:07:14So you ride a lot with Lance.
00:07:16Yeah, we ride or train a lot here in Austin.
00:07:19How long have you known Lance?
00:07:20I've known Lance since 94, about 10 years.
00:07:23And when you ride bikes with him a lot, you end up spending a lot of time together.
00:07:27You know, two, three, sometimes six hours on a bike next to a guy.
00:07:30You get to know a lot.
00:07:31How come Lance deserves this?
00:07:35Well, you've got to look at really what he's done.
00:07:37Six tour de Francis.
00:07:38But if we just take that aside, what he's done for cancer survivorship,
00:07:42and for all the people that he's really helped.
00:07:44Lance has a whole other degree of fans.
00:07:46Absolutely.
00:07:46And what he does and why he keeps on riding really inspires millions and millions of people
00:07:51that don't even have anything to do with this sport.
00:07:52It's true.
00:07:53Are you ready?
00:07:54I'm ready.
00:07:54The party has just begun.
00:07:56Let's go.
00:07:56Yes.
00:07:59Time for that overhaul on Ant Farm, that gang attack known as deconstruction.
00:08:04It's when we pick at the car, and the car strikes back by revealing secrets
00:08:07that signal a whole lot of work ahead.
00:08:10A lot of hitting damage.
00:08:12Somebody covered a lot of stuff right there.
00:08:14The car was a gift from girlfriend Sheryl Crow, and we thought it was in okay shape.
00:08:18Sorry, Sheryl.
00:08:19It is hurting.
00:08:20You know, usually I like the truck on the car left.
00:08:25There's so many guys working on the car that it's tough to find something to do.
00:08:29Right now, it's like lions on the jungle.
00:08:31You know, they kill a zebra, and they all jump in it, and none of them can get enough to eat.
00:08:34It's my imitation of a lamp.
00:08:42Yuck it up now, Chip, because this car is revealing that the joke's on us.
00:08:46We need to find all this stuff, because if we just paint this car, this is stuff that can return within six months from now.
00:08:53Yeah, I think the permage.
00:08:54So the gang starts the search for buried bondo and reclusive rust.
00:08:59I love the smell of bondo in the morning.
00:09:01Build coordinator Craig Chaffers sees double trouble ahead.
00:09:07Lots of rust in bondo.
00:09:09It's not good.
00:09:10It's like bondo over rust.
00:09:12That's even worse.
00:09:14And as if all of that wasn't enough.
00:09:16Now, Jeff, you opened up the truck.
00:09:18You had a pretty good way to describe it.
00:09:20It looks like Swiss cheese in there.
00:09:21It's pretty bad.
00:09:27I got gas.
00:09:28All right, well, the interior's been thrashed.
00:09:30The car's coming apart at a rapid rate, and we're about to pull the motor.
00:09:34A butler engine.
00:09:35A lot more horsepower.
00:09:36Double the horsepower.
00:09:37Double the horsepower.
00:09:38Double.
00:09:40So it's out with the motor and out with the dash.
00:09:43Dash is out.
00:09:47Even at this early stage,
00:09:48Foose is putting some thought into a certain detail at the door.
00:09:52Hey, Lance, I heard you really liked your buddy Will's Cadillac with the remote door lock.
00:09:55So college had told me that.
00:09:57So college and I decided that we're going to get rid of your door handles, too.
00:10:01But before we can get there, the car has a media blast in its immediate future.
00:10:06It's 4.30 on day one, and the car is already on its way to be media blasted.
00:10:10We're ahead of schedule.
00:10:12Show me the schedule.
00:10:14So the car is off to the blast across town, and we've got to keep it all covered and on the QT.
00:10:19Austin is Armstrong country, and we're running a covert operation here.
00:10:23We sent Chris ahead to meet the car, and as confused as he was, he found the right place.
00:10:28I saw this place, the Strip Masters, and I got all excited.
00:10:31So I pulled in here, but it turns out it's a place where you get your car media blasted.
00:10:34So I said, hey, bring the GTO over here.
00:10:37Let's get all the paint off the body, get it down to bare metal so we really know what we've got to work with.
00:10:41So that's what we did.
00:10:43A moment of truth is approaching when we'll see what the body really looks like.
00:10:47And with all the parts soon here, it's time to gear it all up.
00:10:59All right, well, I guess the next step is to get the suits on, get the guns out.
00:11:03Bring the strippers.
00:11:04Start holding.
00:11:06Now, in order to get every speck of paint and rust off this body, the team is going to have to pull it all off its frame.
00:11:11The next step is something you don't see every day, standing the car up on its nose.
00:11:25Oh, yeah.
00:11:26No problem.
00:11:28Who said body off?
00:11:29You can't see if we take it seriously?
00:11:31Absolutely.
00:11:32Just body off.
00:11:33And this is as body off as it can possibly get.
00:11:38Meanwhile, back at Colvin Automotive, Christmas came early.
00:11:41Would you agree that Original Parts Group loves us?
00:11:44They love you, Lance.
00:11:45All of these parts are going to be adorning your new TTO.
00:11:51Those parts are pieces of a plan.
00:11:53A plan centered around a design that is now coming together from the mind and the pens of that one and only Prince of Puns,
00:11:59known to the free and civilized world as Chip Foose.
00:12:03Chip has heard that Lance would be thrilled with a black car.
00:12:06And if anyone can take basic black and create some thrills, it would have to be Foose.
00:12:11And of course, it's not just the outside that Chip is putting to paper.
00:12:14The interior of the car is also going to get much love.
00:12:17So as Foose sketches out the inside of the ride, it's time to bring Jim Griffin over to the idea.
00:12:22Jim can see that it's a black interior as well, but not without a lot of detail, a lot of custom piping,
00:12:27and a lot of sleepless nights ahead for Jim and his team.
00:12:30The whole car is going to be about as black as a ride can get.
00:12:34And yet, even through all that darkness, Foose is able to let the light of cool come through yet again.
00:12:39It's now late into the night, and the team over at Stripmasters is busy blasting the body.
00:12:52With their suits on and their guns out, they shoot the parts until the naked truth shows itself.
00:12:57On day one of Overhawn, we grabbed Lance Armstrong's 1970 GTO and brought it to Colvin Automotive here in Austin, Texas.
00:13:13Now, thanks to our musical insider Sheryl Crow, and thanks to our insider college, we know just how to grab the car.
00:13:18And thanks to team captain Chip Foose, we know just what to do with the ride.
00:13:22But right now, we're just getting started, breaking the GTO down to the bare essentials and hoping that seven days will be ample time to transform this into Lance's ultimate dream ride.
00:13:32And now as day two begins, we've got to move fast and try to stay ahead of one of the fastest guys on earth, because if he catches us, it's ride over.
00:13:40But if he doesn't, hey, he's an even bigger winner.
00:13:43Sheryl takes a break from her busy schedule, stopping by to meet Chip and check out the designs.
00:13:48God, that's unbelievable.
00:13:50That's what I want to do to the interior.
00:13:51Oh, my God.
00:13:54It's all black, and this is a little piping.
00:13:57These are the chrome strips that are the original pieces from the car.
00:14:02Oh, that is beautiful.
00:14:05He's going to freak out.
00:14:07What we want to do is build Lance's dream car.
00:14:09The last thing he said to me is, wouldn't it be cool if it was just like oil slick black?
00:14:14I know in our conversations, you wanted to keep the blue, so that's where I came up with this.
00:14:17Because I have a sentimental attachment to it.
00:14:19What I understand is you grew up with this car?
00:14:21We've known this car forever, and I've been trying to buy it from Jerry for, actually, my little brother's been trying to buy it for years and years and years.
00:14:27I wanted to get Lance something for winning six, and he hadn't won six yet.
00:14:31I thought, why wouldn't it be cool if I could get a GTO for him just to be sitting in the garage when he got home?
00:14:35And Jerry said, if she's going to buy it and give it to Lance Armstrong, I'll sell it.
00:14:39So, he's going to be just completely freaked out.
00:14:43Everything about this is going to be better than the way it was.
00:14:45It's supposed to.
00:14:47He's going to be so excited.
00:14:49I just got it back for the media blaster.
00:14:53Game plan for today.
00:14:55I'm going to separate the body and frame.
00:14:57A body off restoration means just that.
00:14:59The A-team is going to have to take the body and pull it off the chassis.
00:15:06The entire A-team is now converging on the chassis and body to get this job done.
00:15:10Everybody's grabbing for air tools, and it is so loud in there that I had to come out here to tell you this.
00:15:16A big job takes big noise, because in order to prep the chassis for a shot of Core 15,
00:15:21the team has to strip it down to the bare metal and unload a few other pieces at the same time.
00:15:30Got everything off the chassis.
00:15:32It's on the trailer.
00:15:33Going to go over to Custom Car Craft.
00:15:34Custom Car Crafters is that awesome Austin paint house run by our A-team Pro, Richard Wood.
00:15:39There you go.
00:15:40Keep going.
00:15:41All right, we're here at Custom Car Crafters in Austin, Texas.
00:15:44As you can see, the guys are putting the chassis on a rotisserie frame right now,
00:15:48so they can spin it around as they paint it without having to handle it.
00:15:51Do you still think that it's possible for us to complete this build in half the time?
00:15:56No.
00:15:57I'm just teasing you.
00:15:58Well, yeah.
00:15:58We have all the manpower, but then we also have so much more to do.
00:16:01I'm utilizing the power to go the extra mile on this.
00:16:04Lance, you're going to love it!
00:16:05All right, well, here's where we're at so far.
00:16:10You saw us when we were taking these apart, doing the detail on them, getting them cleaned
00:16:14up.
00:16:14They're painted.
00:16:16Paul's fixing all the broken springs that are in them, which is not too many, and they're
00:16:20easily repaired.
00:16:21When a seat like this is created, these need to work in unison, and they're working independently
00:16:26right now.
00:16:27So we came up with an improvised metal source here.
00:16:31We got some car antennas.
00:16:33We'll actually fasten these across, and it'll tie them all together, and they'll work as a
00:16:37team, and it makes a much firmer seat.
00:16:39Jim gets going on the bucket seats, working with layer after layer of foam.
00:16:44He carves up the corners and then shaves down the foam into ergonomic perfection.
00:16:48We have Lance's new engine here, a variation of what was in the car, but about double the
00:17:06horsepower from what he had before.
00:17:09So he's used to going fast on bikes, but it should be a different ride for him.
00:17:14He better hang on.
00:17:15Lance, we know you like to go fast, but this might just be enough power to scare you.
00:17:21The boys from Butler soon hear the word around campus.
00:17:24Foose has some special plans for the engine.
00:17:27Our gearheads are told to dismantle that pack of horsepower piece by piece by piece.
00:17:32Well, we've got it disassembled now, waiting on Chip to tell us what he wants to do.
00:17:37So start over again, get it like he wants it, put it back together, get it ready for the
00:17:42car.
00:17:42All right, Foose, so what's going on with the motor here?
00:17:46It looks great.
00:17:47Butler brought this in.
00:17:48I love it.
00:17:49It's got some great pieces on it.
00:17:51Of course, we brought in Edelbrock again.
00:17:53And what I want to do is paint the block.
00:17:56And the color that the amps are, that anthracite gray, I want to bring that into the interior
00:18:01and also in the engine compartment.
00:18:02Everything being black and glossy and shiny, except the motor, I want that flat silver color.
00:18:08We'll keep this polished.
00:18:09But then I want to paint the valve cover as a gloss black.
00:18:12Okay.
00:18:13And then I've got a special little treat that we'll show you later.
00:18:15Okay, Foose is already taking this build a few steps beyond saying.
00:18:19But now he's flirting with disaster.
00:18:21Coming up with a task that just might break the seven-day bank.
00:18:24Chip has labeled each part of the engine with a color scheme.
00:18:27And now those parts all have to be prepped for paint.
00:18:30All right, cool.
00:18:31So we've got the intake manifold, we've got the tranny, we've got the engine itself, and
00:18:34a whole bunch of other parts.
00:18:35Now, you're going to paint all this stuff tonight, right?
00:18:37Yeah.
00:18:38Foose is going wild on this one.
00:18:41No stops here.
00:18:42I mean, obviously, somebody went into a lot of trouble to polish all this stuff up.
00:18:47Foose is going to make it personalize it, make it special for Lance.
00:18:50About 7.30 p.m. right now.
00:18:52So we're looking at, what, probably 10 a.m. at the earliest before we actually start painting.
00:18:56We'll watch the sun come up while we're squirting.
00:18:58Excellent.
00:18:58That'll be fun.
00:18:59A little Texas sunrise.
00:19:00Yeah.
00:19:00Then do some painting.
00:19:01The heck with those perfectly polished parts.
00:19:04If the new paint is going to stick, every cover and corner has to be treated.
00:19:08So nearly everyone on the team sat down to sand down some parts.
00:19:12Meanwhile, let's swing back to see how the chassis is coming along.
00:19:18Stuyo engines.
00:19:20That was dramatic.
00:19:21Late into the night, the team moves the chassis back over to Colvin Automotive so they can start
00:19:26hooking up the suspension ASAP.
00:19:40Hey, Lance, how you doing?
00:19:42We're building your kicker sub box.
00:19:44Three 10-inch subs.
00:19:45Going to go in right behind the back seat.
00:19:48We custom built this yesterday, day one.
00:19:50And I'm going to load three kicker, 10-inch, solar barracks.
00:19:55It's time for Insider College to have a tour of the progress so far.
00:19:59Oh, my God.
00:20:00Brand new floor.
00:20:01This is amazing.
00:20:03This has been all reshaped and sculpted on the inside and then cleaned up.
00:20:08Is this the air conditioner you were talking about?
00:20:10Yeah, that's a new air unit from Vintage Air.
00:20:12Wow.
00:20:13So that'll hang down and the dash covers it so you don't see it at all.
00:20:15Now, this hole has been filled in the firewall.
00:20:18And this will all be done by Saturday.
00:20:20Yeah.
00:20:20That's amazing.
00:20:22He's a lucky guy.
00:20:23Crazy stuff.
00:20:23That's crazy stuff.
00:20:26All right, well, the painted chassis is looking beautiful.
00:20:29It came from Custom Car Crafters at like 10.30 p.m. on Evening 2.
00:20:33The Moser rear end is on the car.
00:20:34Most of the Hodgkiss suspension has been installed.
00:20:37The guys from OPG are really happy.
00:20:39The parts are coming in.
00:20:40Everything's looking good.
00:20:41And we're hoping, hoping being the key word, that the body's going to meet the frame by late on evening 3 tonight.
00:20:48All right, now you were just saying something about not being able to, you know, or the audience probably not being able to really understand what happens in seven days.
00:20:56When I came in after day one, I was just overwhelmed.
00:21:00And I think it's very hard for TV to capture all the hard work that's going in behind this car.
00:21:05And I like to probably, like, if you watch Lance during the Tour de France, him going up the mountains, it may not look that hard, but you really wouldn't know until you start riding your bike up that mountain.
00:21:15Good analogy, because this is like an uphill climb.
00:21:17It's a gigantic uphill climb.
00:21:19We've been using the analogy around here that the GTO had cancer all over it.
00:21:23Right.
00:21:24And that's obviously a parallel with Lance's life.
00:21:26You know, I think that's something to be said, that if you want to get a big team involved behind you, because that was really Lance's story, is that as soon as he got the right team at Indianapolis Medical Center to get behind him, he became comfortable.
00:21:40Then things started turning up, and the cancer started going away.
00:21:44And as you can tell with the car, obviously the cancer's gone away now, and now they're starting to patch things back up.
00:21:48He hasn't been informed yet that his car was stolen.
00:21:50No, he has not.
00:21:52And how do you think he's going to react when he finds out that it has?
00:21:54You know, it always depends on the time of the day.
00:21:58So, but, well, no matter what time of the day, knowing that this car is missing is going to be, it's going to cause some stress.
00:22:08I'm here with John Hotchkiss of Hotchkiss Performance.
00:22:10So you can tell me exactly what you guys are going to be doing.
00:22:12Boy, I'll tell you, on paper it all looks cool, then you bolt it together, and Chip wants to do a special wheel, so it has to be inset a little more.
00:22:19So we're going to have to, bottom line, we're going to have to make a rear bar by Friday then.
00:22:23So when Lance takes this thing out on the road and really gets into a turn, it's going to feel like he's driving a brand new car.
00:22:28Well, when we heard this car was for Lance Armstrong, we said, man, this is a better handle, right?
00:22:33Because, you know, hey, I hear he's picky, and I would be, too, if I rode bikes like that.
00:22:37Cheryl Crowe has a look around the shop, checking out the progress on Lance's rapidly evolving goat.
00:22:42Am I seeing pieces of the car already?
00:22:44Yes, you are.
00:22:44This Austin girl gets a gander at the cowhide, the interior material for the inside of the ride.
00:22:51We've got some perforated leather, which is going to go in the insert.
00:22:54I love that, because the old stuff, I liked how they had the two different textures in there.
00:22:58It was cool.
00:22:59Boy, this is beautiful.
00:23:00You have to make me some pants if you have any looks.
00:23:02Oh!
00:23:04Elsewhere in the shop, it's the frame that catches her eye.
00:23:07This is the frame.
00:23:08Of the car?
00:23:09Yes.
00:23:10Wow.
00:23:11I am totally freaked out.
00:23:13What's going on?
00:23:13I wish, I would love for him to be able to see this right now.
00:23:15He would just be freaky now.
00:23:17Lance, this is the car that was in your garage right when you won the Tour de France.
00:23:24I can't even believe that.
00:23:25That's killer.
00:23:26You guys are studs to come down here and work in a whole, like, a foreign place.
00:23:31It's really cool you're doing this.
00:23:32I was actually really excited to do this for Lance.
00:23:34I got to tell you, Austin's a cool city, and they love Lance.
00:23:38I mean, he is their own, and they're going to be psyched about this.
00:23:42He's America's golden boy.
00:23:43Yeah, he is.
00:23:44He is.
00:23:45He's very inspiring.
00:23:47Lance, I hope you like your car.
00:23:48Happy birthday.
00:23:49Your birthday's Saturday.
00:23:51And I know you're going to be surprised, and you're probably going to be pissed off,
00:23:54but when you see this thing and when you drive it, I hope you just love it.
00:23:58Well, it's the evening of day three.
00:23:59We've got the patch panels done in the car, getting ready to load it up,
00:24:02take it over to Richard at Custom Car Crafters,
00:24:04so we can start the body work and get some paint on it.
00:24:06It's a big step.
00:24:08We are finally getting this body to a stage that's approaching a level known as Fus Acceptable.
00:24:13We've busted the rust, banished the bondo,
00:24:15and now we're about to give this body the best treatment it's had
00:24:18since the day it came off the assembly line.
00:24:23What we're fixing to do, we're going to mine it up to our rotisserie
00:24:25so we can cook it like a chicken.
00:24:27So we've got another long night ahead of us.
00:24:34I'll say it again, Lance.
00:24:35I don't know how you do it in three weeks,
00:24:36because this is day three for us.
00:24:38We're dying.
00:24:39The car's on its side, so the team can seal the undercarriage.
00:24:50Smoothing out the rough patches and filling in the holes.
00:24:52All that has to be done before the car can even begin to meet up with Primer.
00:24:58This team puts in the hours, not stopping for rest and not stopping for rain.
00:25:04On days two and three here at Overholland,
00:25:18more work went into Lance Armstrong's 1970 GTO,
00:25:21and more work went into keeping Lance in the dark about his swiped ride.
00:25:25Now a lot of that Lance-related work fell to our musical insider,
00:25:28the singular and this week very devious Sheryl Crow.
00:25:30And now as day four begins, we're already prepared for a reveal
00:25:34that's as big as all Texas.
00:25:36A thrill for a champ who knows a thing or two
00:25:38about marathon tasks that end in the winner's circle.
00:25:43We're here with College.
00:25:45He's about to call Lance and tell him his car's been stolen.
00:25:48Hey, man.
00:25:50Yesterday I called that guy about your car,
00:25:53and so I decided that today, you know, I didn't get a call back.
00:25:57I'd just swing up there and take a look, and I'm up here right now.
00:26:00And, uh, it's kind of bad.
00:26:03Well, I know.
00:26:04It needed work, so of course it's kind of a bad issue.
00:26:06No.
00:26:07That's not the issue.
00:26:08Um, the issue is I'm up here.
00:26:10The cops are up here.
00:26:12Last night, like, five cars got stolen off this lot,
00:26:15and one of them was yours.
00:26:17Come on.
00:26:19I'm, dude.
00:26:21Man, I wish I...
00:26:23All right, next.
00:26:24That's not even funny.
00:26:26Hang on.
00:26:27You're not messing with me?
00:26:27I'm not, dude, I'm getting ready to hand the phone with a cop right here.
00:26:31Yeah, I'm serious.
00:26:32This is serious.
00:26:32Hang on.
00:26:33Mr. Armstrong.
00:26:34Yeah?
00:26:35Hi, my name is Paul Ramanofsky.
00:26:36I'm an investigator with the State of Texas Outer Thief Task Force.
00:26:39Hi.
00:26:40The State of Texas procedure dictates that I meet with the owner of the car
00:26:43as soon as possible, because I have to fill out a stolen vehicle report
00:26:48that you have to sign before I can file it.
00:26:51Can we say 45 minutes from now I'll meet you at that shell station?
00:26:54That's fine.
00:26:55Okay, great.
00:26:55I'll see you there.
00:26:56I'm going to hand the phone back to John.
00:26:58Okay.
00:27:00Dude, man.
00:27:01I don't know what to say, man.
00:27:03Unbelievable.
00:27:03I mean, I am freaking out right now, so I'll shoot you down there.
00:27:09Okay.
00:27:09All right, man.
00:27:10Yeah.
00:27:10Go ahead, Ryan.
00:27:12And the Emmy goes to college.
00:27:15That was awesome.
00:27:17He's buying it hook, line, and sinker, man.
00:27:19Damn, I got hyperhidrosis.
00:27:23That's sweaty palms to all you people who don't know what that is.
00:27:25Man, we just pranked Lance Armstrong.
00:27:27You're going to love that.
00:27:28Meanwhile, the work continues on the GTO.
00:27:30What we're trying to do is get the wheels and tires on so we can roll it over to the body shop.
00:27:34We're going to put all new body bushings on, set the body down on the frame,
00:27:39and then the body shop can start aligning all the panels and get ready to do the final sand and paint it.
00:27:45So it's more of that crosstown shuffle for this very active set of wheels.
00:27:50Next time it comes back, it's going to have a body on it.
00:27:52So we're now sending Lance to a rendezvous point where he can sign some stolen car documents.
00:27:57And the great part of our present transport is that Lance might drive right past his chassis
00:28:02and not even have a clue that it was his ride that was on the move.
00:28:07It took a lot of all-night work to get us here.
00:28:10And now it's time for Cheryl to stop by and see the remade body.
00:28:13Oh my God.
00:28:16That is going to be the most beautiful inside of the video.
00:28:24One of the things I like to say about this show, one of the things I really enjoy about it,
00:28:27is sure we build a couple cars, but I'm building a lot of friendships.
00:28:31And I'm meeting a lot of neat people.
00:28:33Lance will be calling you guys like every couple weeks to see how your families are doing.
00:28:36I mean, that's how he is.
00:28:37He's really emotional about stuff like this.
00:28:39It's good fun.
00:28:40Lance, what do you think?
00:28:41You like your car?
00:28:42How are you?
00:28:46How are you doing?
00:28:47Right on time, Lance and his pal meet up with College and that detective from the Overholland
00:28:52precinct.
00:28:53So I'm going to put you down as the owner of the car.
00:28:57So if you just sign at the X right there.
00:29:01How often do you recover these?
00:29:03You know, you'd be surprised with these older cars, since they're a little bit more unique.
00:29:07We recover them at quite a high rate.
00:29:09So you should have it by the end of the day?
00:29:10Uh, end of the week, latest.
00:29:13So this is all I pretty much need from you right now.
00:29:16I just got to get one other thing out of the car here.
00:29:20Hey, Mr. Armstrong, you know, my father Chip is a huge, huge fan of yours.
00:29:24If you could just maybe sign that to him.
00:29:27To Chip.
00:29:32Hey, just maybe one other thing for me, too.
00:29:35He got it.
00:29:35He came down to my office as soon as he knew.
00:29:37He'd put it on my back if you want.
00:29:38Sign that.
00:29:40You're going to get the car, right?
00:29:42Oh, absolutely.
00:29:43All right, we get to take back the jersey.
00:29:44You know what?
00:29:45If I don't find your car for you, you can get the jersey back.
00:29:47How about that?
00:29:49You don't do eBay on the side, do you?
00:29:50Absolutely.
00:29:51Well, that's why I had you sign it to my dad.
00:29:52You know, I'm not going to do that.
00:29:56Just sign it?
00:29:57To Chip.
00:29:57Yeah, that'd be great.
00:29:58Also Chip.
00:29:59Unbelievable.
00:29:59You know, I was talking to my dad about it.
00:30:03He says you were thinking about maybe not going for it again.
00:30:05But I said, you know, to win one is amazing.
00:30:10But then to go for the sixth one, that'd be just amazing if you were able to do that.
00:30:14Because, you know, you've got five already.
00:30:17There's another one.
00:30:17Look at the other finger there.
00:30:19Six.
00:30:19We already did six.
00:30:20Oh, I thought you were saying, I'm number one.
00:30:23I've won five.
00:30:25Well, that's pretty easy.
00:30:25I'm sorry.
00:30:26You sure you want to give this to him?
00:30:28Go for seven.
00:30:29Maybe we hang on to this until the...
00:30:32Don't we know some chips?
00:30:33We got a couple chips.
00:30:34We know a couple, two, three chips.
00:30:36You know, open mouth and serve foot.
00:30:38We could put it like...
00:30:40Your chips are the best.
00:30:41Yeah, like chips and salsa.
00:30:43And salsa.
00:30:44Well, I appreciate you signing that for him.
00:30:47If you need to get in touch with me, you got my card.
00:30:50That's my cell phone number that's on there.
00:30:52Thanks for the help.
00:30:54Well...
00:30:54We'll talk to you soon.
00:30:55Thank you for coming down here.
00:30:56Sorry to inconvenience you.
00:30:57You guys.
00:30:58All right.
00:30:58I'll see you soon.
00:30:59See you.
00:31:02Now that it's over, Chris and his sweaty palms should feel great.
00:31:05College told us that Lance fell for the whole thing.
00:31:08Starstruck cop and all.
00:31:11Back at Colvin Automotive, Roy and Bob work on the hood,
00:31:14the only part not yet sent over to custom car crafters.
00:31:17At the last minute, Chip decided to remove the grill.
00:31:20So guess what?
00:31:21The guys are just a little bit pressed for time.
00:31:23The hood's one of the last objects to go on the car naturally,
00:31:27but the hood does need to be done.
00:31:30The chassis is wrapped with newspaper to protect the paint job
00:31:33while they spray the car with primer.
00:31:34Next, the body and the chassis are remarried,
00:31:42and the team starts reattaching the rest of the body pieces.
00:31:45This whole project hinges on our ability to get it done on time.
00:31:49It's pivotal.
00:31:50Ooh, gotta love that foos.
00:31:52Who else could come up with that stuff?
00:31:54Doors, deck lid, quarter panels, they all go back on the GTO.
00:31:58But there's still one crucial piece missing.
00:32:00Ladies and gentlemen, we'll hood.
00:32:03Last piece for the car that needs to go to body shop
00:32:05needs to leave right now.
00:32:07We're with you, Roy.
00:32:09Let's get it on over there now, brother.
00:32:12It's 5 p.m. on day four.
00:32:14We just brought the hood and door latches
00:32:15over from Colvin to custom car crafters
00:32:17so that the car can be mocked up,
00:32:19make sure that the gaps line up perfectly.
00:32:22Rough patches are smoothed over with Bondo.
00:32:28And the hood is attached.
00:32:31And it looks like it might be yet another sleepless night
00:32:34for one hard-working crew.
00:32:36So now they sand down the car and adjust all the gaps
00:32:39so every piece lines up just right.
00:32:50And of course, foos is a maniac,
00:32:52working with the crew straight on until...
00:32:55Sun's coming up.
00:32:56We about to have all the body work done.
00:32:58We'll be able to roll this in the booth pretty soon,
00:33:00get the first coat of primer on it.
00:33:02And then it's block sanding.
00:33:04And get it back, get another coat of primer on it,
00:33:07sand that, and hopefully get it in paint tonight.
00:33:10All right, we're back from the prank.
00:33:12My palms have dried.
00:33:14College, how do you think it went?
00:33:16I think it went great.
00:33:17Do you think he has any idea
00:33:18that anything fishy is going on?
00:33:20I don't think so.
00:33:21I mean, he's so thrown for a loop by Chris
00:33:23asking these questions that I think he's...
00:33:26He wasn't processing at all.
00:33:28And he called me after we had all left,
00:33:29and he's like, hey, don't worry about it.
00:33:31You know, it's not your...
00:33:32You didn't steal the car.
00:33:33Right.
00:33:34As far as you know, Lance.
00:33:35Wait till he gets the call from the insurance adjuster,
00:33:39because he's really not going to be happy after that call.
00:33:42I'm not going to be there for that.
00:33:43I'm just going to give you a little teaser.
00:33:45You're going to see that in a little bit, Lance.
00:33:46I'm sorry, man.
00:33:48No, I'm not.
00:33:49Meanwhile, the interior team preps the center console
00:33:51by sanding it down to shape it properly.
00:33:53And Jim sews the leather that will cover that center console.
00:33:57Griffin uses the difficult French seam,
00:33:59a skill that takes a lot of concentration.
00:34:01The tricky part is you're sewing within an eighth of an inch
00:34:04of a straight line on either side,
00:34:08so if you go off, it shows.
00:34:09And the rest of Jim's team puts in just as much concentration
00:34:12into their intricate upholstery.
00:34:14Soon, it's time to test fit the leather to the console.
00:34:20Hey, Lance, here we are fabricating your new bicycle rack.
00:34:24It's going to hold two bikes.
00:34:26It's going to be held by two smaller receiver hitches
00:34:31that are going to mount underneath their car,
00:34:32so it'll hold it real steady.
00:34:35We're test-fitting your sweet ride
00:34:36to go on top of your other sweet ride.
00:34:40Well, Richard and the guys are finishing up on the bodywork,
00:34:43trying to get it in primer,
00:34:44so they've been blocking and doing bodywork all night.
00:34:47We came down and picked up a lot of the engine parts
00:34:48to take them back to KC's shop.
00:34:50A lot of, there's probably 75, 80 pieces
00:34:53that Chip had us paint for the engine.
00:34:55We're going to take those back, get them out of their way,
00:34:57and start assembling the engine.
00:34:59The body is finally ready for primer,
00:35:02so they push the car on over to that nearby painter.
00:35:04Now, first, they're going to tape up what doesn't get painted.
00:35:07Let's go, guys. Let's push.
00:35:11All right, what we're fixing to do here,
00:35:13Gilbert's going to mix me up with some self-etching primer.
00:35:15We're going to go in there and slam three coats of it,
00:35:18bake it at 170 for about, let's say, 45 minutes.
00:35:22Come out, block it, prime it again,
00:35:24and we're going to get ready to paint it.
00:35:26Kind of getting chills. I'm excited.
00:35:27After five days of long work, we're finally going to see a color go on it.
00:35:31All right, let's spray this thing.
00:35:33And spray this thing he does, without a moment to spare,
00:35:36because whether we like it or not, it's time to make tracks.
00:35:44On days four and five, we kept on overhauling Lance's 1970 GTO convertible
00:35:49here in the Lone Star capital of Austin, Texas.
00:35:52And we're working inside Colvin Automotive,
00:35:54teaming up with our inside peeps
00:35:56to positively freak out a presently confused world-class athlete.
00:36:00On day six, we thought, how cool do we want to make this ride?
00:36:03Now we know everybody on the planet can't get enough of Lance on his bike,
00:36:07but Foose wanted to work it
00:36:08so that Lance never wants to get out of his goat.
00:36:10It's the start of another day,
00:36:15and body work still continues.
00:36:16But sleeplessness has made some of the guys just a bit loopy.
00:36:23Loopy is for those in motion.
00:36:25The others have simply passed out.
00:36:29We're going to put some sealer on it, put some paint on it,
00:36:32get this thing done.
00:36:39So here we go. Let's get it going.
00:36:41Just because it's a single tone doesn't mean it's a simple job.
00:36:45Black is tough to get right,
00:36:46and this is going to be many layers of black,
00:36:49followed by at least four layers of clear.
00:36:51To save time, the doors, hood, and other parts
00:36:53are hitting the same go-round with the body paint.
00:36:55All right, it's noon, day six.
00:36:57Getting the paint on, get it cleared here shortly, bake it.
00:37:00I'd say probably three, four o'clock,
00:37:01we'll get it back over to Colvin Automotive
00:37:03and start reassembling.
00:37:05Chip's pal Rodney is a hot rod painter from Houston,
00:37:08here to paint the surprise element of the engine.
00:37:10What we're going to do is sand the valve cover
00:37:12with some thousand grit
00:37:13and prepare it for the airbrush work.
00:37:17And then when we complete the airbrush work,
00:37:19the whole valve cover will be ready for a clear.
00:37:21First things first,
00:37:23Rodney lays down the yellow.
00:37:25Then with a vinyl outline,
00:37:27he stencils out a logo.
00:37:30He's set up his masking
00:37:31so he can add depth using different colors.
00:37:33Hey, Lance, this has a little more meaning to me
00:37:38than some people here
00:37:39because I'm a cancer survivor too.
00:37:41About 14 years ago, I had testicular cancer
00:37:44and I beat it.
00:37:45And so this is a little more personal to me.
00:37:48So I hope you like what I do.
00:37:51Really nice, slick, nice lines.
00:37:54The GTO now heads back to Colvin Automotive
00:37:57where the A-Team is eager
00:37:58to start putting Lance's car back together.
00:38:00All right, Rick.
00:38:13So how's everything been going with the AC unit?
00:38:16We're getting progress.
00:38:17We're making progress.
00:38:18We're getting there.
00:38:18We're taking out the old factory air unit
00:38:21that was in here
00:38:21and we're updating it
00:38:22with one of our fully electronic units.
00:38:25Now, typically, a GTO like this
00:38:26wouldn't even have an AC unit.
00:38:28Yeah, this car was a factory air
00:38:29which is a pretty rare option
00:38:30especially for a convertible.
00:38:31That's not a real common thing.
00:38:33So, yeah, I was surprised to see
00:38:34that it originally had factory air
00:38:35but again, we're going to really give them
00:38:38some improvement with this.
00:38:39Well, I hope you're pretty close
00:38:40because we only have one day to go.
00:38:41Lots of time.
00:38:42Lots of time.
00:38:43Lots of hours.
00:38:44One day but two nights.
00:38:45Good point.
00:38:48Stereo, exhaust, brakes.
00:38:50It's all happening
00:38:51and happening at once.
00:38:52Guys are in here
00:38:53putting the whole
00:38:55Body 3 Dynamat treatment
00:38:57fitting our kicks one last time
00:39:00and double, triple laying up
00:39:03on our Dynamat
00:39:03and we're ready to go.
00:39:06It's time to install
00:39:07the speaker box into the trunk.
00:39:09And Jim Griffin takes a look
00:39:10to see what his end of the deal will need.
00:39:12That unfolds
00:39:13as Adam from Magnaflow
00:39:14goes below
00:39:15and installs the exhaust.
00:39:16He fits on a shiny new tailpipe
00:39:18and welds it all together.
00:39:19So after Adam gets caught up exhaust-wise,
00:39:26he helps Nick out with the brakes.
00:39:28We're just determining
00:39:29where we want to mount
00:39:29the proportioning valve.
00:39:30It has to go inline
00:39:31in the rear line.
00:39:32Since we converted
00:39:33from a drum rear
00:39:34to a disc rear,
00:39:35we have to be able
00:39:35to cut rear pressure.
00:39:37So we're going to find
00:39:38a nice place out of the way
00:39:39to put this
00:39:39where it's easily accessible.
00:39:41All right, it's day six.
00:39:43The exact number
00:39:44of Tour de France titles
00:39:45that Lance has attained.
00:39:46This number one bike boy
00:39:48is one day away
00:39:49from getting his dream ride.
00:39:56Okay, Lance,
00:39:57it's day six.
00:39:58We're coming down the wire.
00:40:00We're building your receiver hitch
00:40:02for your bike rack.
00:40:04It's been mounted inside the bumper
00:40:06so it's out of sight.
00:40:08All you need to do
00:40:09is pop your license plate down,
00:40:12slide your bike rack in,
00:40:14and you're good to go.
00:40:19The engine and its parts
00:40:24are painted
00:40:24and now it all has
00:40:26to get put back together.
00:40:27And Chip is looking
00:40:27for a way to personalize
00:40:29the motor even more.
00:40:30What I'm doing
00:40:31is trying to figure out
00:40:32rather than just a nut
00:40:33on the air cleaner,
00:40:34that would be kind of fun
00:40:35to use the quick release
00:40:36from a bicycle wheel.
00:40:37Most of the,
00:40:40everything that you actually see
00:40:41on this engine right now
00:40:42has been off this engine
00:40:44to be painted.
00:40:45Wow.
00:40:45So just the basic long block
00:40:47of the engine was intact,
00:40:48but even that was painted.
00:40:50Right.
00:40:50Every piece of this engine
00:40:51has been painted.
00:40:52Holy cow.
00:40:53The original motor in the car
00:40:54put out 210 horsepower.
00:40:56What are we thinking
00:40:56that this Butler motor
00:40:57is going to do?
00:40:58We're hoping we can
00:40:59close to double that.
00:41:01So it should be
00:41:01a good ride for Lance.
00:41:03A little quicker
00:41:03than his bike even,
00:41:04I think.
00:41:04A little quicker
00:41:05than his bike.
00:41:06I think so.
00:41:07All right.
00:41:07It's time to drop Lance's
00:41:09new power
00:41:10into his new GTO.
00:41:14And it's time for Chip
00:41:15to drop in with more
00:41:15of that famous
00:41:16FOOS wordplay.
00:41:18Pretty soon we're going
00:41:19to crank the motor.
00:41:21As Chip cranks,
00:41:22the team above
00:41:23and below the car
00:41:24guide the engine
00:41:25into place.
00:41:28There you go.
00:41:38Perfect.
00:41:40All right.
00:41:40So the motor
00:41:41and transmission went in
00:41:42without a scratch
00:41:43to that beautifully
00:41:44painted engine compartment.
00:41:46Excellent.
00:41:47And now hopefully
00:41:47the headers will fit perfectly
00:41:49and this thing will fire
00:41:50on the first try.
00:41:51Okay.
00:41:52Everybody calm down
00:41:53because other critical
00:41:54engine parts need
00:41:55to be installed
00:41:55before anybody's
00:41:57firing up anything
00:41:58around here.
00:42:01Right now I'm just
00:42:02putting the power
00:42:03steering pump on here
00:42:04and I'm going to
00:42:05check the pulley alignment
00:42:05to make sure everything
00:42:06fits like it's supposed to.
00:42:08Almost there.
00:42:09The radiator goes in,
00:42:10bolts are tightened,
00:42:11Chip's new air cover
00:42:12goes on,
00:42:13oil pours,
00:42:14and we are almost there.
00:42:16Lance, it's about
00:42:17one o'clock in the morning
00:42:18and we're getting ready
00:42:19to make some noise
00:42:20here for the first time.
00:42:21go ahead.
00:42:23Oh yeah, that's it.
00:42:44Just checking it out,
00:42:46make sure it did crank,
00:42:48it's port and bark,
00:42:49so we'll be ready
00:42:51for tomorrow.
00:42:58On Overholms Day 6,
00:42:59we're close to finishing
00:43:00Lance Armstrong's GTO,
00:43:02but not close enough.
00:43:04And Lance,
00:43:04I know I speak along
00:43:05with our insider college
00:43:06when I say that
00:43:06we are going to win
00:43:07this time trial.
00:43:08And now it's on
00:43:09to Stage 7 of this race.
00:43:13Hey Lance,
00:43:14it's Day 7.
00:43:14That's oil slick black,
00:43:17I heard you wanted that.
00:43:19But you get it tomorrow.
00:43:23Chip's one-off
00:43:24custom wheels have arrived.
00:43:27And the foos caps
00:43:28are in place.
00:43:30That's it.
00:43:35Tomorrow's D-Day.
00:43:36Yeah, it is.
00:43:37Are you ready, college?
00:43:39I think so.
00:43:40I mean,
00:43:40it's coming together,
00:43:42but is it going
00:43:42to come together on time?
00:43:43Of course it will.
00:43:45Good.
00:43:45Who do you think's
00:43:46more of a perfectionist?
00:43:47Chip Foose
00:43:48or Lance Armstrong?
00:43:49Ooh, good question.
00:43:51That'd be a close race.
00:43:53I'd hate to put them
00:43:54in some kind of
00:43:55competitive competition
00:43:57of perfectionism
00:43:58and that would be funny.
00:44:00I think this represents
00:44:02the fact that Lance
00:44:03is going to love Foose
00:44:04this much
00:44:05when he gets his new GTO.
00:44:08Okay, how do you feel
00:44:09about the fact
00:44:10that this entire build team
00:44:11is calling you
00:44:12a madman perfectionist?
00:44:14I wanted that
00:44:15on this car.
00:44:16I want everything
00:44:18to have a common
00:44:19theme behind it.
00:44:21So everything you see
00:44:22from the grille,
00:44:23the motor,
00:44:25the dash,
00:44:25the center console,
00:44:26the speakers,
00:44:28and the amps
00:44:28in the trunk,
00:44:29everything to have
00:44:30the same color scheme
00:44:31and design statement.
00:44:32It's more of a theme
00:44:34that you would put
00:44:34into a concept car
00:44:35rather than a hot rod
00:44:37or a custom car.
00:44:38It's one statement
00:44:39throughout.
00:44:40And are you happy
00:44:41with the way
00:44:41that everybody's been
00:44:42performing?
00:44:43I love it this much.
00:44:44We all love it this much.
00:44:46Lance is going to love it
00:44:47this much.
00:44:49I'm about to call Lance
00:44:50and prank him,
00:44:51posing as an insurance
00:44:52adjuster,
00:44:53calling on behalf
00:44:54of the hot rod shop
00:44:55from where his car
00:44:56was stolen.
00:44:57I need,
00:44:57I've got to disguise
00:44:58my voice somehow.
00:45:00Try these.
00:45:01Plug your nose.
00:45:02Oh, man.
00:45:02Man, what the hell.
00:45:06I love you, Foose.
00:45:08Hello?
00:45:09Yeah, may I speak
00:45:10to Mr. Armstrong, please?
00:45:12Yes, sir.
00:45:13My name is Tim Steffen
00:45:14and I'm calling
00:45:15from Global Alliance
00:45:16Insurance Company.
00:45:17Uh-huh?
00:45:17First of all,
00:45:18I just need to fill in
00:45:19some things
00:45:19on the police report.
00:45:20The police report
00:45:21wasn't really complete.
00:45:23I don't know
00:45:23if the cop was a rookie
00:45:25or what,
00:45:26but he didn't really
00:45:26fill this in to it.
00:45:27I don't have a lot
00:45:28to go with,
00:45:28so I need you
00:45:29to ask us some questions
00:45:30about that first.
00:45:31Okay.
00:45:32Uh,
00:45:33I don't have
00:45:34a registration number
00:45:35for the car.
00:45:36The car was a gift
00:45:37to me
00:45:39from my girlfriend
00:45:40and...
00:45:41Okay, I see.
00:45:42Now I'm confused already.
00:45:43First of all,
00:45:44let's back up
00:45:44a couple steps.
00:45:46What's your,
00:45:46what's your girlfriend's name?
00:45:48Cheryl is the first name.
00:45:49Last name?
00:45:50Crow.
00:45:52Yeah, yeah.
00:45:53My cousin's
00:45:53Tom Petty, too.
00:45:54No, really,
00:45:55what's her name?
00:45:56Her last name?
00:45:59It's Crow.
00:46:00C-R-O-W.
00:46:02Is that,
00:46:03is that the singer,
00:46:04Cheryl Crow?
00:46:06That's the singer.
00:46:07Wow.
00:46:08Oh my goodness.
00:46:09That's,
00:46:09that's pretty cool.
00:46:10Yeah, she's...
00:46:11And you're the,
00:46:12you were in the,
00:46:12the X Games
00:46:14or you're a,
00:46:14you're a biker?
00:46:15I, I,
00:46:16I am a biker.
00:46:17I've never done the X Games.
00:46:19Oh, okay.
00:46:20Let me just ask you this.
00:46:21What's the,
00:46:22I have here,
00:46:22the stated value
00:46:23of the car
00:46:24is $10,000.
00:46:24Is that correct?
00:46:25Honestly,
00:46:26I, I don't know.
00:46:27I didn't cheap
00:46:27out the car
00:46:28about a month ago.
00:46:30So,
00:46:30I, I don't know.
00:46:32Well,
00:46:32that's the thing
00:46:32that concerns me
00:46:33is because I,
00:46:34I don't have a registration.
00:46:35I don't have
00:46:36a license plate number
00:46:37and I,
00:46:38I can't exactly
00:46:39write you a check
00:46:40for $10,000.
00:46:41I want to get this
00:46:43taken care of
00:46:43in a timely fashion.
00:46:45But with this
00:46:45police report
00:46:46that I have,
00:46:47I, I just,
00:46:47I can't,
00:46:48I can't do anything
00:46:48right now.
00:46:49I'll give you
00:46:50a couple days
00:46:50to try to gather
00:46:51that information
00:46:52and I'll give you
00:46:53a call back
00:46:53and maybe you can,
00:46:54you can fill in
00:46:55the blanks for me here.
00:46:56But as,
00:46:56as this police report
00:46:57stands right now,
00:46:58I can't process
00:46:59this claim.
00:47:00I don't know.
00:47:00I got the number
00:47:01here for this police guy
00:47:02so I'm going to call him
00:47:03and just get the latest
00:47:04update because.
00:47:06Okay, thank you.
00:47:07Thanks a lot, Tim.
00:47:08Bye-bye.
00:47:08Bye.
00:47:11That did nothing
00:47:12but confuse
00:47:13the hell out of him.
00:47:15Oh,
00:47:16apparently he's
00:47:16still buying it though.
00:47:20That's your sucker!
00:47:22Oh, man,
00:47:23that is so beautiful.
00:47:26Lance quickly
00:47:26calls Cheryl,
00:47:27leaves a detailed
00:47:28message about
00:47:29his recent
00:47:29phone experience.
00:47:30Call me,
00:47:31I'll give you
00:47:31all the scoop.
00:47:32How is he sounding?
00:47:33Does he sound ticked?
00:47:34No, actually
00:47:35he sounds like
00:47:36he's treading
00:47:38on fin eyes.
00:47:39Uh-oh.
00:47:40So he's asking me
00:47:41all this information
00:47:42and I tried to explain
00:47:43to him that it was
00:47:44a gift and he needed
00:47:45a receipt and I'm
00:47:46just going to assume
00:47:47that maybe your
00:47:47business manager has it.
00:47:50Because he knows.
00:47:51I'm like,
00:47:51dude,
00:47:52you've got to go
00:47:52on the phone
00:47:52and find out
00:47:52about my car
00:47:53because,
00:47:54you know,
00:47:54it's been a really
00:47:55busy week for me
00:47:56and I haven't heard
00:47:56anything and I know
00:47:57I'm going to call
00:47:58college and find
00:47:58you know.
00:47:59Are you acting
00:48:00ticked at him?
00:48:01Yesterday and today
00:48:02I was just like,
00:48:03I just can't believe,
00:48:04I can't believe
00:48:04the car was stolen
00:48:05and yesterday I was like,
00:48:06I can't believe
00:48:06you guys just like,
00:48:08you moved it
00:48:08and it wasn't even
00:48:09insured.
00:48:09I was like,
00:48:10that's,
00:48:11and I said,
00:48:11we're just going
00:48:11to get hammered on now.
00:48:12I love it,
00:48:13Cheryl,
00:48:13you're totally acting.
00:48:15And he was like,
00:48:17yeah,
00:48:17but you know,
00:48:17I think there's a
00:48:18really good shot,
00:48:18they'll find it
00:48:19and I mean,
00:48:20the police said
00:48:20it was a good shot.
00:48:21I was like,
00:48:21well,
00:48:21okay.
00:48:22Thanks,
00:48:22Cheryl,
00:48:23again.
00:48:24My pleasure.
00:48:24See you guys tomorrow.
00:48:25Thanks.
00:48:27At this late stage
00:48:28in the build,
00:48:29it's become a one-of-a-kind
00:48:30experience for everyone
00:48:31involved.
00:48:33Phenomenal.
00:48:34It's just amazing
00:48:35how many people
00:48:36are touched.
00:48:36I mean,
00:48:37you know,
00:48:37everyone on the crew
00:48:38is here
00:48:38and they've got
00:48:39some relationship
00:48:40to it,
00:48:40you know.
00:48:41I think it's,
00:48:42and it's a statement
00:48:43of what the whole
00:48:44car stands for.
00:48:45I didn't want,
00:48:46any color
00:48:47on the entire car
00:48:48other than this focal
00:48:49point right here.
00:48:51You've achieved it.
00:48:52That represents so much.
00:48:54You've done it.
00:48:55To this foundation.
00:48:56Yeah.
00:48:56And sorry, Lance,
00:48:57we're putting you
00:48:58through this,
00:48:58but I hope you enjoy it.
00:49:01It's all hands-on deck
00:49:03to get this car finished.
00:49:04Brakes,
00:49:05gas tank,
00:49:06doors and windows.
00:49:07It's all going together
00:49:08along with a truly
00:49:09killer sound system.
00:49:16Even the speakers
00:49:23and amps got painted
00:49:24to match the theme
00:49:25of the car.
00:49:26Kicker puts together
00:49:27a system that includes
00:49:2811 speakers
00:49:29and 2,000 watts of power.
00:49:32Guys burned a midnight oil
00:49:33last night,
00:49:34getting panels fab,
00:49:35getting everything ready.
00:49:36We are putting together
00:49:38the final steps
00:49:38on our kick panels,
00:49:40getting these things
00:49:40ready to get covered
00:49:41and go in the car,
00:49:42finishing up our trunk panels.
00:49:44We'll start getting
00:49:45this thing wired up
00:49:46and ready to jam.
00:49:54One Lance Armstrong
00:49:55Tour de France bike.
00:49:58You're going to help
00:49:59on this one?
00:50:01Because I want you
00:50:01to start getting
00:50:02this thing torn apart.
00:50:03I'm going to paint it
00:50:03bright red.
00:50:05And I want to change
00:50:06the wheels.
00:50:06We're going to put
00:50:06some boost wheels.
00:50:07Solid billet.
00:50:08They'll weigh about
00:50:0940 pounds apiece.
00:50:10Okay.
00:50:10You'll be all right with that?
00:50:11Yeah, I think so.
00:50:12Hey Lance,
00:50:14we told him no.
00:50:16I couldn't resist it.
00:50:22We're trying to make
00:50:23a real slick bike rack
00:50:24and it's taking
00:50:25a little bit of time
00:50:26because we want
00:50:28to make sure it's right.
00:50:30It's one thing
00:50:30to design a bike rack
00:50:31that's never existed.
00:50:33It's another to have it
00:50:34hide away in a GTO
00:50:35that's never had a bike rack.
00:50:37But how about doing
00:50:38all that for the greatest
00:50:39bike rider of all time?
00:50:40Well, after enough
00:50:42trial and error,
00:50:43the guys finally
00:50:43make it happen.
00:50:44And now,
00:50:45I got to get Lance
00:50:46on the phone.
00:50:47Detective Ramanoski.
00:50:48Oh, yes,
00:50:49Mr. Armstrong,
00:50:50how are you doing?
00:50:50I actually have
00:50:51some good news,
00:50:52I hope, for you.
00:50:54I interviewed
00:50:55several of the other
00:50:56people who had
00:50:57their cars stolen
00:50:57from the shop
00:50:58yesterday.
00:50:59And one of the people
00:51:01gave me some
00:51:02very good information
00:51:04that I think
00:51:05there may be
00:51:06a scam going on here
00:51:07involving a couple
00:51:09body shops.
00:51:10So I'm actually
00:51:11setting up a couple
00:51:12stakeouts right now
00:51:13that are going to
00:51:14go down tonight.
00:51:15And I'm hoping
00:51:15to bus these places
00:51:17within the next
00:51:17couple days.
00:51:18I have slept very
00:51:19little since I spoke
00:51:20to you last.
00:51:21So I'm hoping
00:51:22that I'm going to
00:51:22be able to take
00:51:23these places down.
00:51:24Great.
00:51:25So when is this
00:51:26kind of goes down
00:51:27tonight?
00:51:28Well, yeah,
00:51:28I've actually got
00:51:29two body shops
00:51:30that I'm staking out
00:51:31tonight.
00:51:31Okay.
00:51:32So we got eyeballs
00:51:33all over the place.
00:51:34And as soon as I know
00:51:35anything more,
00:51:36I'll give you a call.
00:51:37But I just wanted
00:51:37to call you right
00:51:38now and give you
00:51:39that little piece
00:51:39of good news.
00:51:40Well, thank you
00:51:41very much.
00:51:41Thank you, sir.
00:51:42I'll be in touch.
00:51:43Okay.
00:51:43Good luck.
00:51:43Thanks.
00:51:44Bye.
00:51:45Happy birthday, Lance.
00:51:56We're doing well.
00:51:57We have the seats
00:51:57to finish.
00:51:58Carl's just now
00:51:59covering the door
00:51:59panels.
00:52:01And hopefully we get
00:52:01some space in the car.
00:52:03Because I've got to
00:52:03have my space.
00:52:04Otherwise, we can't
00:52:05get our job done.
00:52:06They get space
00:52:07to test fit the seats.
00:52:09But they'll have
00:52:09to wait until tomorrow
00:52:10before they can
00:52:11finish the installation.
00:52:19So as you know,
00:52:20this is definitely
00:52:21the most detailed
00:52:22and elaborate build
00:52:23over Haaland has ever
00:52:24done.
00:52:24And normally on D-Day,
00:52:25we have several hours
00:52:26where we can finish
00:52:27buttoning up the car.
00:52:28But because of Lance's
00:52:29hectic schedule,
00:52:30we have a very small
00:52:31window tomorrow
00:52:31when we can deliver
00:52:32the DTO to him.
00:52:33Which means the car
00:52:34absolutely, positively
00:52:35has to be done tonight.
00:52:37And we still have
00:52:37a long way to go.
00:52:39More than ever,
00:52:40this is crunch time.
00:52:44The sleek black bumper
00:52:46goes on,
00:52:46and our man,
00:52:47Foos, checks out
00:52:48the fit.
00:52:51Vintage Air gets the AC
00:52:52installed into the dash.
00:52:54And it looks like
00:52:55the new convertible top
00:52:56is ready to hop on board.
00:52:57It's not Chip's first
00:53:04soft top,
00:53:05but it is a first
00:53:06for overhaul.
00:53:06And we're all finding
00:53:07out that there's a little
00:53:08more to it than a few
00:53:09snaps and a zipper or two.
00:53:11It's in now.
00:53:14Joe, tell me about
00:53:15the stereo system
00:53:16for Lance's car.
00:53:16We're installing
00:53:17his Clarion N-9255.
00:53:19This is the best head
00:53:20unit that Clarion makes.
00:53:22Only the best for Lance's
00:53:24ride.
00:53:24All right, well,
00:53:25let's hear what Lance
00:53:26is going to get to listen
00:53:27to when he's driving
00:53:27his new GTO.
00:53:29All right, let's hear it.
00:53:38Oh, yeah!
00:53:44But before long,
00:53:45it's not all music
00:53:46and dancing,
00:53:47as the seven-day schedule
00:53:48finally takes its toll,
00:53:49creating casualties
00:53:50and forcing the question,
00:53:52will this car get done
00:53:53in time?
00:53:57On day seven of our
00:54:07overhaul and build,
00:54:08it was down to the last
00:54:09minute details here
00:54:10in Austin, Texas,
00:54:11a build centering around
00:54:12a much-in-need 1970 GTO.
00:54:15And now it's D-Day,
00:54:16and we are very, very close
00:54:17to giving the newly
00:54:18tricked-out Pontiac back
00:54:19to the soon-to-be-shocked
00:54:20and soon-to-be-stunned
00:54:21Lance Armstrong.
00:54:22Let's do it!
00:54:23Here on D-Day,
00:54:26it's clear that this crew
00:54:27is running on zero sleep.
00:54:28But there's no time to rest
00:54:30when we've got such a long
00:54:31way to go.
00:54:33There's no chance
00:54:34we're going to get this thing
00:54:36done.
00:54:37So I'm taping the cover
00:54:38on it,
00:54:38and they're going to paint
00:54:39it with leather-like paint.
00:54:43Oh, yeah,
00:54:43very funny, Jim.
00:54:44But seriously,
00:54:45the team is scrambling
00:54:46to assemble the car.
00:54:53As the dash gets installed,
00:54:55Jim and his team
00:54:56race to finish the seats.
00:55:00I just got to finish
00:55:01this last little tail.
00:55:04The bike rack gets
00:55:05one final test fitting.
00:55:08All this as Chip gets
00:55:1015 minutes of sleep,
00:55:11the most he's had all week.
00:55:13Mr. Armstrong,
00:55:19it's Detective Ramanofsky.
00:55:21Hey, man.
00:55:21I got some great news
00:55:22for you.
00:55:24I found your car.
00:55:26You did?
00:55:27You're in okay shape?
00:55:27Did they tear it up?
00:55:28I found the car.
00:55:29What has to happen now
00:55:30procedurally is
00:55:31I need you to come down here
00:55:32and identify the vehicle
00:55:33so I can then file
00:55:34a police claim
00:55:35against these guys
00:55:36and start the process
00:55:37of taking these guys in.
00:55:39When do we need
00:55:40to be down there?
00:55:40I'd like to get you down here
00:55:41as soon as possible.
00:55:42Okay, we'll hurry.
00:55:44Okay, great.
00:55:45Thanks a lot, man.
00:55:45Thank you, Mr. Armstrong.
00:55:46Okay.
00:55:47Bye-bye.
00:55:49All right, this is a little scary
00:55:50because Lance is on his way.
00:55:51We are just minutes away
00:55:52from delivering this car to him.
00:55:54Mission touches are still happening.
00:55:56Interior is still being installed.
00:55:58This is the ultimate quest time.
00:56:02Okay, wheels, polish, pinstriping,
00:56:05but the question is,
00:56:06are we going to make it?
00:56:07Truly, only time will tell.
00:56:12Showtime quickly arrives
00:56:18because it didn't take long
00:56:19for Lance and Cheryl
00:56:20to get down here.
00:56:22Are you coming here?
00:56:23I haven't spoken to them, actually.
00:56:27Let's come out this way.
00:56:29Oh, sorry.
00:56:30Hey, that's on.
00:56:32Yeah, these are the guys.
00:56:34They don't want to see these freaks.
00:56:35Well, the problem is
00:56:37when I talked to the owner of the shop,
00:56:39he told me
00:56:40that you dropped the car off to him
00:56:42and asked him to work on it.
00:56:44Now, I know that's not true.
00:56:45I know he's lying.
00:56:46But what I need from you
00:56:48is to take a look at this guy,
00:56:49look at him for two seconds,
00:56:51tell me you've never seen him before,
00:56:53and then I can go from there.
00:56:54Yeah, we definitely didn't drop it off.
00:56:56Okay.
00:56:57Yeah, that's all I need to do.
00:56:58So just hang right here
00:57:00and I'll go get him.
00:57:03Actually, you know what?
00:57:04Mr. Traum, I'm really glad that you're actually here.
00:57:05My dad's a big fan of Lance's,
00:57:07but I'm actually a pretty big fan.
00:57:09He was, I played bass and a fan,
00:57:11so I got a video of my band,
00:57:14you know, a few yellow bands.
00:57:15So, you know, if you ever,
00:57:17like, if your bass player drops out or anything,
00:57:18you know, take a look,
00:57:19because I'm pretty good.
00:57:21Oh, you play bass?
00:57:22I thought you played guitar.
00:57:23I play guitar, too.
00:57:24So, I mean, either one.
00:57:25All right.
00:57:26But if you need somebody to fill in,
00:57:27you can take a look at the tape.
00:57:28Actually, we're pretty good.
00:57:29Okay.
00:57:29So hang on one side,
00:57:30I'm going to go grab this guy.
00:57:34Oh, my God.
00:57:36Just take a look at this guy.
00:57:38God!
00:57:40What are you doing?
00:57:41Happy birthday, man.
00:57:42You just got overhauled, man.
00:57:48You're messing with me, man.
00:57:49I'm not messing.
00:57:50We are messing with you now.
00:57:51Lance, my name's Chris.
00:57:52I'm the host of a TV show called Overhauling.
00:57:55One week ago...
00:57:56Dude, I thought you were a Cine Cup.
00:57:58I knew you were bad.
00:58:00This is my co-host, Courtney.
00:58:02Courtney, nice to meet you.
00:58:03So, Lance, how was your week?
00:58:05I'm speechless.
00:58:08I sort of blamed a lot of it on college,
00:58:09to be honest.
00:58:10Ah!
00:58:11Because he dropped off the car.
00:58:13He's still cuffed.
00:58:14We need the Cine.
00:58:14And I just told her,
00:58:17I said, look, college dropped it off.
00:58:19He said it was a good shop.
00:58:20Well, what was your vision?
00:58:20What were you thinking?
00:58:21You'd like to do it for the car?
00:58:22Me?
00:58:22Yeah.
00:58:24It definitely would have been black,
00:58:25because I always drive black cars.
00:58:27Uh-oh.
00:58:28Oh, shoot.
00:58:30All right, where is it?

00:59:13He wanted an oil slick black,
00:59:15and you're not going to find anyone
00:59:17who's going to say that didn't happen.
00:59:18It was a gift from Cheryl,
00:59:21and now, thanks to her generosity,
00:59:23it's a gift from a lot of people,
00:59:24because she let us in on a way
00:59:26to give a little back to a totally deserving guy.

00:59:59That is so tight.
01:00:01She was very sentimental about the car.
01:00:03So was he.
01:00:04But now, the ride is the best of both worlds,
01:00:07an original GTO that is ready for the road of today.

01:00:27And a little more horsepower.
01:00:29Excitantly.

01:00:37I better go out and ride my bike tomorrow.
01:00:59That's right.
