00:00After the heists, pranks, reconstruction, and the foosin', what's left?
00:11Well, you now own a cool, one-of-a-kind overhaul and custom.
00:14And today, we're reunited with the coolest of those cool cars,
00:17watching them run, making them compete, and catching up with our at-one-time coolest marks.
00:21It's the best of the best here at the Irwindale Speedway,
00:24where the owner's already been tricked, the car's already been tricked out.
00:27And now, the real fun begins.
00:29Racing those rides, revisiting our wildest moments,
00:32here on a special edition of Overhauling's Coolest Cars.
00:57They come from all walks of life.
01:02People as different as different can be.
01:04But they all have one thing in common.
01:06They've been inducted into the exclusive club known as Overhauling.
01:10My name's Jeff, and I have a 71 Chevelle.
01:16And what a Chevelle it turned out to be, getting fully tricked out as we were busy tricking poor Jeff on the phone.
01:22What about your car?
01:25There's a problem.
01:29Just want to check.
01:30I mean, we don't want to do anything that we wouldn't ask you about, so...
01:33Oh, no, that's fine.
01:34Okay.
01:35Yeah, whatever you gotta do, man.
01:37Okay.
01:41Katie, the 67 Nova, Cherry Nova.
01:44This is perfect.
01:45It's not as bad as I thought, but definitely not too good that we can't keep it to Overhauling of its life.
01:50And while the Nova was getting the overhauling of its life, Katie was getting the pranking of her life.
01:55You're not a grandma or anything, are you?
01:57Oh, no, honey.
01:58How old are you?
01:59Are you...
02:00Are you kidding me?
02:01Wait.
02:02That's not even my car.
02:03That's not my car.
02:04That's not my car.
02:05Oh, my God!
02:06That's not my car.
02:07That's not my car.
02:08It's a gold Nova.
02:09My name is Race, and I'm driving the Montefuego.
02:14This was one tough car for one tough customer.
02:18A mark who required a big series of big shows when it came to keeping him totally dazed and flat-out confused.
02:25Is that your car?
02:26Yes.
02:27My car.
02:28Are those bullet holes?
02:29Yeah.
02:30Bam!
02:31Bam!
02:32And I ducked down behind the trash can, and these guys are... that's him.
02:34He jumped out of the car.
02:35My name is Cassie, and my car is Lucky Star.
02:36This may be the easiest car theft ever.
02:37The theft was easy, but the build was brutal.
02:38And so were the pranks, fooling Cassie into thinking that her SUV was chopped up into parts.
02:55Can you tell me if that's your car or not?
02:57Yeah.
02:58That is?
02:59Yeah.
03:00That's all that's left.
03:01Oh, my God.
03:02Unfortunately, yeah.
03:03I'm Connie, and this is my 1964 Corvette.
03:08We've got to get everything out of here before we get to the car.
03:12Connie, we're doing all this for you.
03:13Not only are you going to get your vet overhauled when it's cooling up, you're also going to get your garage overhauled.
03:18All right, let's roll.
03:19Bye-bye, Corvette.
03:21Well, the Corvette wasn't running.
03:22Mm-hmm.
03:23And you couldn't even pull it straight out.
03:26You had to doll it.
03:27You had to jack it up.
03:28Yeah.
03:29Pull it out.
03:30It was a 64 Corvette that was, you know...
03:38My name's Mark, and this is like Rustang.
03:41It's a 1965 Ford Fastback.
03:44This car is jacked.
03:47So we've bitten off a little more we can chew once again, huh?
03:50We have big mouths.
03:52I can't believe any more than one, and it's all packed up.
03:56No fenders, no hood, no seat, no license plate.
04:01I mean, if they're out on the street, the cops just easily see it's totally not even legal to be on the street.
04:06My favorite part of the build, taking the car part.
04:10Want to see how rusted the chassis is?
04:12Because if it's real bad, I don't know that we want to separate this body from the chassis.
04:17Oh, hurt part.
04:19It's how it always begins, and it's harder than it looks.
04:23We're already working on the sweat here.
04:27Parts come off until they are soon no more.
04:31No more name plates.
04:32No more stars working on it.
04:34This thing's trashed, man.
04:36It's so weak, it's so rusted out.
04:37All the interior's coming out.
04:38Everything's coming out.
04:39Who's going to make it a shell?
04:40Center console, it's coming out!
04:44Ship's going to kill me.
04:47He didn't get the key for the trunk.
04:50Oopsie!
04:51So, we're going to fill that trunk hole anyway.
04:55Now we are.
04:56Out of heebie-jeebies in this car.
05:00It looks like almost everything needs to be replaced.
05:03The one really cool custom element that I want to put on this car
05:07is something that my dad used to do to a lot of cars back in the 70s,
05:11is that big real trick moon cap.
05:13Put that in the back and shape the body around it.
05:16That would be a fun little trick.
05:18It's something that I remember as a kid, and I'd like to see him do it again.
05:21When I first see a car, I may not know exactly what I want to do to it,
05:27but as we get into tear down and we're pulling this car apart,
05:30a lot of times it's a memory I have from when I was a kid and growing up around my dad
05:34and seeing what he's done to cars.
05:36Things will click in my head.
05:37You know, we can do the same kind of thing that my dad used to do.
05:40And it's all about just simplifying the car.
05:42Making it as clean and elegant as we can possibly make it
05:45without making it really complicated.
05:48We've only got a couple days to get the metal work done and get the car to paint.
05:52We can't go too far with it.
05:53We just have to simplify it.
05:55Early on, we were all figuring out what to rebuild and what to toss out.
06:00Here, be careful.
06:01Oh, shh.
06:02It all comes off as the builders learn that this ain't showbiz.
06:06Glamorous life of hot rod building on TV right here.
06:09This is insanity.
06:12Insanity is too saying a word for it all.
06:14There goes the manifold.
06:16Everybody grabs for tools.
06:17You gotta work with whatever you can find.
06:20And sometimes you're working with what you can't find, searching for a cool car in there.
06:24And we all do it with one goal in mind.
06:26It's gonna make it sweet for you, baby.
06:29Take it out.
06:30And so far, they've all gone from beat to sweep.
06:38Okay, you've seen them taken apart.
06:40Time to see them perform.
06:42Now that they've all been overhauled and brought to our cool car reunion
06:45here at the world-famous Irwindale Speedway in sunny California.
06:49I knew in my mind the one thing that I wanted was that when people saw this show,
06:53if they ever saw the car on the street, they would know it was the overhauling car that
06:58was built on the show.
06:59And I've tried to keep that on every build that we've done.
07:03If you see this car on the street, you know it's the one that was built on overhauling.
07:07And tried to keep the cars identifiable.
07:09Cars like Jeff's tricked out Chevelle.
07:11A ride that turns heads everywhere it goes.
07:14Ford Racing served up the horsepower when it came to Mark's Mustang.
07:17And today, it's galloping like the muscle car it was born to be.
07:21And speaking of horsepower, Adelbrock came through for Connie's Corvette,
07:25a Chevy that races as good as it looks.
07:30And Cassie's Explorer?
07:31It's a high-tech fun wagon that asks the burning question, where's the party?
07:35Today's answer?
07:36It's right here at the Irwindale Speedway.
07:38All right, enough driving in circles.
07:41Pretty soon, it will be time to find out how these cars handle
07:44when the pedals to the metal and the tires are made to scream.
07:51But first, coming up, we look back at Jeff's Chevelle and Katie's Cherry Nova.
07:56His car was our first project, and he was our first mark.
08:11But when we pulled the curtain on a perfect Chevelle,
08:13Jeff Miller didn't know what the heck was going on.
08:15But how could he?
08:16Back then, being overhauled was a total mystery.
08:18Today, the cat's out of the bag.
08:20And that makes our job both more fun, but a lot more risky.
08:24But that still doesn't change the fact that we had a great time with Jeff,
08:27figuring out our first moves as we built a real cool car for a way cool guy.
08:34When I got my car overhauled, I actually brought my car to them.
08:37We told Jeff that Jim Holloway of Mother's Polish was looking for cars for an infomercial,
08:41and Jeff was more than happy to hand over the keys.
08:44Thank you so much.
08:45Yeah, I appreciate it.
08:46Before my car was overhauled, it was just a standard daily driver
08:50besides the exterior with the grandma green on the outside.
08:54It was green on the inside.
08:56Torn-up carpet.
08:57Dash was pretty messed up.
09:00What it needed was some style.
09:02I love it.
09:03It was good.
09:04It's awesome.
09:05Dude, Richard.
09:06Did you do a flame or more of a...
09:08It was kind of a tribal flame, but just on the inside.
09:10Nice.
09:11Sort of the dancing flames.
09:13Yeah.
09:14You can draw, man.
09:15Can't eat ever.
09:17And while Fu says he builds the car, not the drawing,
09:21it's the drawing that often shows the A-Team how to build.
09:24And often for Chip, that build begins from the ground up.
09:29Jeff's cool car wasn't finished until it was finished.
09:32And along the way, Chip and the team gave us a few scares.
09:35There's been a change, and we have six hours to go.
09:39Yeah, but we're okay.
09:40We're all right.
09:41I mean, we do wheels pretty quick.
09:42What's quick?
09:43Well, we're six hours.
09:45Crazy designers who couldn't stop designing.
09:48Chip and Alan decided to change the steering wheel and rims
09:51in the last hours.
09:53At that point, it was about getting the car correct,
09:55and I knew we could make it in time.
09:58I know how quick Alan can make a set of wheels and get them on a car,
10:01but it was about getting the car correct,
10:04not about making our deadline.
10:06We still make it.
10:07So they give me a call and tell me to come down.
10:11They start breaking out of TV to let me know what happened to my car.
10:17And I'm watching it, and they're ripping the vinyl top off
10:20and taking the windows out and all that.
10:23And then they start drilling the trunk out, and that just threw me off.
10:27I didn't know what was going on.
10:29They start egging me on, telling me how it's been sent down to San Diego,
10:33and it's going to be crushed and all that.
10:36I don't feel really that bad because you did.
10:39In the back of my mind, I'm thinking I'm going to kill this guy.
10:42You know what? You know what?
10:43There's a really way to get this done.
10:45What?
10:46And it's to tell Jeff that overhauling is not a polish.
10:49It's a hidden camera TV show, and you're on it.
10:51I was extremely happy, of course, even though I don't really show it, but that's me.
10:56The thing that really drew my attention was the paint job and wheels.
11:00Everything's been redone on my car.
11:02When I'm driving around the car, it pretty much stops time.
11:06Everybody, it doesn't matter who they are.
11:08They all stop all conversation and turn towards my car and myself.
11:12They either know about the show or they're thinking,
11:14you know, what the hell is this guy driving this car around on the street for?
11:21Being overhauled is the greatest thing that's ever happened to me.
11:25It doesn't really get much better than that.
11:28I want to thank everybody from overhauling, especially Foos.
11:32Katie's Nova is a centerpiece of a sad story in which Chris here went a-courting
11:37and was rejected by an outspoken Mark who just wanted her car back.
11:40Yeah, but you know what?
11:41When I wasn't bugging Katie on the phone, I was helping out with the build,
11:44along with Courtney and the A-Team.
11:46And let me tell you, it was a wild and total build,
11:49one that wasn't finished until Katie was at the very end of her rope.
11:53And we were at the end of our rope when we first saw the Nova,
11:57a car that was in worse shape than its owner remembers.
12:00It was in nice condition, but it wasn't, it wasn't durable.
12:04Like I couldn't, it wasn't dependable.
12:06And that was one of the biggest problems for me.
12:08It had a tendency to stall a lot.
12:11I couldn't go, I mean, I couldn't really drive long distances or anything like that.
12:15As you can see, I'm extremely emotional.
12:17And I was very, very irritated.
12:20And I was, remember, I was hitting the steering wheel.
12:22So, and at that point I was financially in trouble too.
12:24And I was thinking, oh, really?
12:26Really, God?
12:27Katie, we got your car!
12:30And Chris went all out when it came to pranking Katie.
12:34Overhauling, who's our next victim?
12:36I have to say I was really irritated with the Chris thing.
12:38How old are you?
12:39Are you, are you kidding me?
12:41Asking me out kind of irritated me.
12:43And the car, the one time, the thing that I remember the most
12:46is the two wrong cars being shown to me.
12:49That was when I was like, are you insane?
12:51Wait, that's not even my car.
12:53I really didn't think I was ever going to get my car back.
12:56I was very devastated.
12:57She was devastated until she saw her car.
13:01A ride that was redesigned on Foose's drawing board.
13:04On Katie's car, when I saw the photos of Katie
13:07and I saw that she had tattoos on her shoulders of cherries,
13:10I thought, cool, this is going to be the Cherry Nova.
13:12And I just knew that I wanted to put that mark that's on her shoulders
13:16on the hips of the car.
13:18Talking to her friends and family,
13:19I knew that she had this classic Hollywood theme about her life.
13:23And I knew I wanted to go with a silver screen.
13:26On a lot of projects, generally, you create a time schedule
13:29or there's a timeline when certain things have to be met.
13:33I don't like to do that on overhauling because as soon as I do that,
13:36people are going to start to panic if we fall behind.
13:39They're around the corner, Scott and Katie.
13:40We're like three minutes away from delivering this car.
13:42They still don't know what's going on with the axle.
13:44Foose is trying to solve this problem.
13:46The interior seats are still going in.
13:48And it is very stressful in this room.
13:51And for the first time, I don't know if we're going to make it.
13:54Final graphics, engine problems, a final leak to fix.
13:57And on top of that, Katie and her brother got there early.
14:00It was a perfect storm, but Foose was still as cool as a cucumber.
14:04Yeah, they're early. They can wait. Sorry.
14:09But soon it was showtime.
14:11Enjoy, Katie.
14:12I've got to talk to you.
14:14Mm-hmm.
14:15This guy Johnson here?
14:16Mm-hmm.
14:17Total con man.
14:18Your brother Scott?
14:20Big fat liar.
14:22You are on a TV show called Overhauling.
14:26I honestly thought it was a joke.
14:29Like, I could, I've never had something so emotional like that,
14:32especially from one extreme to where I thought my car was gone,
14:34and then to really, like, I had just hit gold.
14:38Where's my car?
14:40My car, just as Chip had intended, it looks,
14:42I think it really does look like classic silver screen Hollywood,
14:45old Hollywood.
14:46Like, the interior looks very, uh, vintage.
14:48Um, the, the pearl with the fade and the red pin striping.
14:51I mean, it is perfect.
14:53It, I mean, I think it's, I think it is the prettiest thing I've ever seen.
14:56And I still do.
14:57So, and that's, that's really exciting.
14:59When they get that passionate about their car,
15:02that makes it all worth it.
15:03That's, that's the best.
15:04It's the best natural high in the world
15:06when you know you've done something for somebody
15:08to make them that happy.
15:09Oh, my God!
15:11Oh, that is, that's not my, that's not my agent at all.
15:15One of the best things about being overhauled
15:17is that my dreams just got, just came true,
15:20and I didn't even have to do anything for it.
15:22Are you kidding me?
15:24Oh, my God.
15:26Her emotions ran high,
15:28but you can see why when you look at the car.
15:30I think I'm going to have a heart attack.
15:32Being overhauled was,
15:33in, in the best sense of overwhelming.
15:36Like, I, I honestly,
15:38and I could say that if, God forbid,
15:41but something happened,
15:42I would die happy having that drastic of emotion.
15:45I, it was, it was to me like winning the lottery,
15:48and I've never, ever, ever felt anything like the way that I felt that day
15:51that it was unveiled to me,
15:52and I, I never would ever take it back.
15:55That's what, that's what I do when I'm overwhelmed.
16:00Everybody makes fun of me for that.
16:03You guys, I'm very animated.
16:07Mwah!
16:08Up next, two Fords that couldn't be less alike if they tried.
16:13Hard to find someone who loves this car as much as Mark.
16:27A Mustang maniac who was set into a tailspin when we took his old ride and did it upright.
16:31The rebuild of the pony car was complete,
16:34thanks to a top-notch A-team who made the Ford both in shape and on top.
16:40The car was a family keepsake that needed a lot of work.
16:43Before overhauling, my car was in desperate need of rust repair.
16:47So, the car today has been called a piece of junk, a piece of rotten fruit, a toilet.
16:54A family heirloom, and you have to take pride in that, and that's what everybody's doing.
16:59So, no matter what they've said about it, look at the love they're giving it.
17:02Absolutely.
17:03As Chip created, he knew it was going to be a trick,
17:06combining innovative foos to tails with a car that just might be the most sacred design in automotive history.
17:12In other words, Chip had a balancing act on his hands.
17:15On Mark's car, what I want to do is just get rid of some of those production gaps,
17:18the big, heavy awkwardness.
17:20Just tighten it up, tailor the car down.
17:22You do that to the front bumper, to the rear bumper, you get the doors fit.
17:25You get everything where it's just, as I said, tailored looking.
17:29It's just a real clean, simple flowing line.
17:32One of the more complicated matters on this build involved foos' creation of a custom valance for the front area.
17:38And a bonus on the build, Chip had his dad, Sam, on the A-team.
17:43Oberhawn's not about just building cars.
17:46You know, we're also building relationships.
17:48We meet some great family members.
17:50All of these people are there.
17:52They're supporting us.
17:53They're helping us.
17:54They have to live a lie with our marks.
17:56I didn't think I could really be fooled that much.
17:58I know my wife so well.
18:00I know my daughter.
18:01There's not many things that go by me and our family.
18:04And for them to fool me that much was pretty amazing.
18:07They can't even keep a Christmas present a secret.
18:10Oh, that's amazing.
18:13And just as amazing was the scene of the reveal.
18:16A big show with cops, bad guys, and a lot of surprises.
18:20So when I showed up and saw a big pile of junk, I just wanted to leave.
18:23Parts off my car right there.
18:24That does look familiar.
18:25I had to sit there and identify them.
18:27And I never saw anyone steal my car.
18:29I couldn't identify anyone.
18:31I just wanted to get in my car and drive away.
18:33This guy is a ringleader.
18:34He's actually one of the guys, I think, who actually stole your vehicle.
18:40Get on overhauling.
18:41Yes, sir.
18:43Yes, sir.
18:44Yes, sir.
18:45First, just the shock that something like this would happen to me, I thought was pretty amazing.
18:50Did my wife know?
18:51Sure.
18:52She was in on it.
18:53She's our insider.
18:54She's a ringleader.
18:55I'm going to have to take you out to dinner.
18:57Yeah.
18:58But when I came around and I saw the car, I just thought it was gorgeous, beautiful.
19:05I know what it takes to turn something around like that rusted old fastback into a thing of beauty.
19:16It's not just one thing.
19:17It's the whole package deal.
19:18It's striking.
19:19And then I've driven it around town and people are just amazed at the look of it.
19:23People honk and they slow down.
19:25They want to check out the car and they recognize the car big time.
19:29It was our family heirloom.
19:31Everyone loved to be in it.
19:32That was the car we took when we went to special places.
19:35I took it to my prom in high school and I had a lot of experiences and memories in that car.
19:41When my dad passed away, it was fairly quick.
19:44I remember telling him that I'd try and keep it on the road and keep his memory alive.
19:50I've been overhauled and I love it.
19:53For Mark, this car is a total winner all the way around.
20:00One of our toughest builds was for our first female, Mark.
20:02A young girl into stars, music, and her enormous and later eye-popping Ford Explorer.
20:08Now, Cassie's SUV might not seem like the typical overhaul and ride, proving that there's no such thing as a typical overhaul and ride.
20:14Foods can tackle anything.
20:15And this Ford Explorer was tackled big time.
20:18Tricked out with games, audio, visual, graphics, all in a build that was almost as big as the truck itself.
20:24This may be the easiest car theft ever.
20:28My car was stolen.
20:30I was pretty sad.
20:31I didn't know what to do.
20:32I thought I was going to have to buy a new car.
20:34I didn't have the money.
20:36So I was pretty mad.
20:38Anyone?
20:39It was still fun, but it was missing a couple things.
20:42Exhaust.
20:43An armrest.
20:44My interior's pretty ugly.
20:45My paint job was just plain white.
20:47Stock speakers.
20:48Stock everything.
20:50Pretty much pretty crappy.
20:52My paint job's pretty awesome.
20:54Stars all over.
20:55Stars in my seat.
20:56Stars in my rims.
20:58On my back window.
21:00Pretty much everywhere.
21:01The paint job was a stream of white stars lined with yellow fading to gold borders, cutting across the SUV's divide of black and red.
21:10That's a long way to say that given the timetable, this job was next to impossible.
21:14Like a lot of our builds, in the final hours of the SUV build, it was the invasion of the car people.
21:20They installed, they fine-tuned, right up to the time when the truth was finally revealed.
21:25A little tense around here right now, but that's understandable.
21:28Is there anything I can do to help you guys?
21:30Sometimes I'm asked how I lead this team to do what we're doing and what is my style of leadership or whatever.
21:38I believe it's all lead by example.
21:42You know, I'll try and be one of the hardest working guys of all the builders.
21:48Chip has a hand in every aspect of the build, but they all start from one place.
21:55The sketches are the number one thing for everybody to have the same goal.
21:59Yeah, baby!
22:00If they can see it two-dimensionally, then they know where they need to get to.
22:05And that's the goal of the drawing. It's just a tool to get the car done.
22:08We're not building the drawing, we're building the car.
22:10And the drawing came to life just in time for Cassie to be led to her giant surprise.
22:15I was walking around the corner, kind of peeking, and I just let go, and I didn't know what to do.
22:20I was really overwhelmed. I felt like I was going to see my fans.
22:23You don't know what to say at all. You're just in shock.
22:26I feel like I'm going to cry.
22:28What do you think?
22:29I like it. I like it a lot.
22:32My truck's pretty awesome. Lifted. Doesn't look anything like it did before.
22:37The car is definitely me. Everybody who knows me knows that I like stars.
22:41My stereo is pretty loud. You can hear me coming. My aunt can always hear me coming home.
22:45It kind of rattles your ears. Once you get out of my car, you can't even hear your ears are ringing.
22:49Just crank it up a little. Get them.
22:51They're not messing around, are they?
22:53In public, people will come out of a store and there will be people around my car.
22:57We'll be driving. People will pull up, were you on overhauling?
22:59Yeah, that's me.
23:01They always ask me. I tell that story probably every day.
23:04So it's kind of cool.
23:06The best thing about being overhauled was just getting something like so spectacular that you've never had before.
23:11Some crappy old car turning into something so awesome and so much fun.
23:17It's a really good experience. A lot of fun.
23:20Coming up, two way fast cars and you won't be able to decide which one is cooler.
23:35Connie's 1964 Corvette.
23:38Of course it looks beautiful now, but if you remember, it was a mess when we started.
23:42Fiberglass was done perfectly by Mitch Lanzini, Carl Richmond, Brian Fuller, and of course the one and only Sam Foose.
23:49Custom interior, Pisani exhaust. Nothing gets better than this vet.
23:54My Corvette, before being overhauled, had spider cracks throughout all the fiberglass.
24:00The windows didn't work right. The tires were bad. The engine had metal chunks in it. You name it, it was wrong. It was trashed.
24:09It had belonged to my father. My father's no longer with us. He'd given it to me for my 18th birthday.
24:15I'd had it for 25 years and for the last 12 had been wanting to do something with it.
24:21One of the keys to making this build successful is knowing what we can get away with.
24:28I started building cars with my father when I was seven years old.
24:32I know in my head what we can do in seven days.
24:35And sometimes I'll push that a little bit.
24:38It's all about the design of the car and what I want the statement to be.
24:44My car is classy. It's kept the classic lines. Beautiful paint job.
24:49Connie's Corvette. I wanted to keep that one really, really classic and elegant.
24:55And I think it also became very timeless.
24:58Beautiful interior. Everything about the car is just classy.
25:03For Chip, the personality of this particular ride wasn't about body mods. It was all about paint scheme.
25:14That's right. So our resident genius drew up the car as a template for his own Corvette coloring book.
25:19Our insider Pete said his wife once talked about red as a possible color.
25:23But Foose knew that red is the most used and perhaps overused color on the Corvette market today.
25:28My whole thought behind these cars is if someone were to see this car from 300 yards, they know it's the one they saw in overall.
25:38One of the things I don't want to happen on these cars is to have them be trendy.
25:44But if you just try to design for that car and for our marks or the owner of the car, you've got something that's timeless.
25:51It's just trying to create something that's very elegant. You're not going to date the car.
25:58When I walked into automotive expertise, I just couldn't believe it.
26:04It was so beautiful and it was everything that I knew my car could be more than what I ever thought I could make it be.
26:11It was just absolutely amazing.
26:14I think the very best part of being overhauled for me was when I watched the show.
26:22I hadn't seen the show ahead of time and I sat down with all my friends and we watched the show.
26:28And hearing my husband say why I deserved the car was just great.
26:35He loves me and he's a great guy and made this happen.
26:42Pete put it into gear and the A-Team took it from there, turning out one of overhauling's coolest cars.
26:48Do you want to race?
26:54Around here we like to think of Race's Monte Carlo as the delivery that almost didn't happen.
26:59An impossibility of a project made possible by an A-Team that just didn't know when to quit.
27:03That's right, it was tied at the finish line but the full court press was worth it, turning out one of the coolest rides ever to roll out of our overhauling headquarters.
27:13Before my car was overhauled, it was in pretty bad shape.
27:16The bumper was crooked, the tires, the wheels, rusted chrome.
27:21The engine was in pretty bad shape.
27:23I didn't care.
27:24I still thought it was the coolest car on the block.
27:27It was a blessing that I was overhauled when I was, or the Monte Carlo would be dead.
27:32Let's see, when I first found out my car was missing, I woke up that morning and I couldn't find my car keys.
27:38And my wife told me to take her car.
27:41I got home and didn't see my car.
27:44She never drives my car.
27:45So for her to have driven my car, I'm like, must be an emergency, something's going on, my car's not out front.
27:50And I go in the house and she hands me the phone, she's like, it's the police.
27:54On Race's Monte Carlo, I heard a story about it being the fire car when it was his father's car.
28:02And he grew up as a little child riding it and hearing that car.
28:05And so I knew that I wanted to tie in flames somewhere.
28:09But what I really wanted on his car was to create a time capsule.
28:13I tried to keep the inside of that car so that it would pull Race right back to his childhood.
28:19How does someone like Chip Foose walk into your head and create, you know, for me, it is a time capsule.
28:26Because I get inside the car, the interior looks the same, except new.
28:31We have photos of that car, you know, throughout when we were, you know, little, when I was three.
28:35Pretty amazing what they do and how they capture, you know, the personality of the individuals.
28:40I guess I could say I was fortunate enough that we were far enough in the build that I was afforded a little bit of time that I could actually get involved with the prank and giving the car back.
28:51And I got to dress up as a bum, which was a lot of fun.
28:54We do the cleanest work in town.
29:05We got a hot date tonight.
29:07Would you ever in a million years believe that this is the guy who created this?
29:15When they finally said I could come get the car, we get there and there's a police car or whatever, and I'm still not thinking anything.
29:21Then they pull us out and they asked my buddy's name and they said that, you know, he's a suspect.
29:26And I was pretty hot.
29:27It was about as bad as it could get as far as a prank.
29:30This is the most important thing.
29:32You have the right to...
29:33As I'm standing there and I'm listening to Chris and everyone tell me, you know, I've been overhauled.
29:38They've made my dream come true.
29:41Overhauled, dude!
29:43Oh, my God!
29:44And I hear this roar.
29:46And the car comes around and my ears got hot.
29:52And I was about to faint.
29:54I was done.
29:55Ow!
29:56I couldn't believe it.
29:59I mean, you know, you're looking at a piece of my history that means a lot.
30:03It was my dad's first new car.
30:06So the car meant a lot.
30:07And to know that it was on its last leg and then this happens, that's like hitting the
30:11lottery.
30:12And it was a safe bet that Race Jr. then saw his dad's ride in a whole new way.
30:17They got me pretty good, you know.
30:19I mean, the car is...
30:21It fits me and I fit it.
30:23And, you know, it's going to stay in my family forever.
30:25You've been overhauled.
30:26Yes!
30:27That's all right!
30:29I have been overhauled.
30:31He has been overhauled without a doubt.
30:34Coming up, getting the full lowdown on our resident genius, Foose.
30:41A-team members change.
30:54The cars come and go.
30:55But throughout each and every overhaul and build, there's one constant.
30:59One man whose creativity, leadership and dedication inspire both his build teams and his fans
31:04around the world.
31:05Chip.
31:06Chip Chip.
31:07Chip Foose.
31:08Mr. Chip Foose.
31:09Chip Foose is a genius.
31:10From a 65 Mustang to a 91 Explorer, no build can begin without a design.
31:15And there's nobody who can tailor that design for a car owner better than Foose.
31:19He wants every car to fit its driver like a glove.
31:22He wants it to match their personality.
31:24He also strives to bring out just what the ride means to the owner.
31:28Yeah, I think Chip's an absolutely incredible designer and kind of a visionary with cars.
31:33As far as I'm concerned, Chip and the A-plus team, as it were, on my car, just, they're
31:38my heroes.
31:39I know my father would approve of this car.
31:41It's beautiful.
31:42Chip and the team were perfect as far as my car and the style and everything that they
31:47chose to do to it.
31:48It's very Katie.
31:50Hit by his usual creative streak, Chip tackled the details, creating a car that was 100% Katie.
32:03The project of that moment was a custom air filter ornament, a one-of-a-kind piece that
32:09echoed the design of Katie's tattoos.
32:11One, uh, cherry a la Foose.
32:18At this stage, it was only an aluminum picture of a cherry, but it wasn't a jewel just yet.
32:23So it was off to a whole mess of grinding and a whole lot of shaping.
32:26Long hours for a single piece that turned out to be as personal as Katie's own skin.
32:31Well, Katie, now we're down to just sand it and polish it.
32:35You've got a cool little cherry that will hold on the air from it.
32:38Way to go, Brian.
32:40Making the cars personalized is just as important to Chip as the design and the performance.
32:45I know that there was also a term where this car was called the fire car, so I don't want
32:50to see real bold graphics on it, but we might do something in the realm of kind of a ghost flame
32:56done in silver and with pearls on top of that.
32:59We had the pleasure of getting all these cars that we've done on Overhauling together,
33:02but there's one car that was never on Overhauling, and that car is very dear to my heart.
33:07It actually is a car that I bought, put a motor in it, put the bare brakes on it, and I sold
33:13it to a friend of mine, Chuck Svetos, who is a large reason that Foose Design even exists today.
33:19He's been a fabulous friend and client.
33:22It's car people like Chuck who have always been a part of Chip's life, along with builders like his A-team members.
33:28Guys that Foose knows how to lead through impossible deadlines.
33:31Leadership where Chip conveys his ideas as clearly as possible.
33:35I want to fill all the bumper bolts.
33:36We get all the door handles, all the moldings, all the emblems, all the little fender wheel lifts.
33:40I wish all our lead fabricators had been like that.
33:43Chip puts it down really fast and seamlessly on paper, makes it really simple.
33:49He makes seeing his vision a lot easier.
33:52And he doesn't just delegate, he does.
33:54Any job, any time of the day or night, Foose is always on hand to pick up a wrench or lay down some paint.
34:01This was really cool.
34:03Chip not only redesigned the car, but he also came up with the flashy flames that burned on the hood.
34:09What you would originally get on the car is these rally stripes, or that was an option.
34:14I want to keep that type of an option, but I want to change it a little bit so I'm adding the flames to just the center section of it.
34:19So it's just a positive, negative, you know, kind of a, as Courtney called it, dancing flame.
34:25I like the way she put that.
34:28Of course, anyone who knows Chip Foose knows that the guy loves to get in on the act.
34:38He'll take a prank to the limit, doing whatever it takes to trick the mark.
34:46I think Chip Foose is a genius, and not only do I think that he's brilliant and extremely talented,
34:51he might be one of the nicest men I've ever met.
34:53And I, honestly, what he does for people, yeah, with his just free time, I think is just wonderful.
34:59He's absolutely incredible. He's one of a kind, he's world class, and he's a very humble, genuine person.
35:06It's my dad's car, dude.
35:08What you've done is really, you've touched my family. You've touched us all.
35:11This is awesome, brother.
35:13And I think he's touched people throughout, you know, the history of overhauling.
35:16I mean, the things he's done to folks' life is pretty awesome.
35:20Oh, my God.
35:22This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.
35:24All I can say is, thanks, Chip, you know, you are, you're the best.
35:29I mean, it don't get any better than that.
35:31And I would just like to say thank you a whole bunch. Thank you.
35:36Bottom line, overhauling is all about passion.
35:39You know, we're driven, and the people on the bill are driven by the passion for the project.
35:45Sorry for putting you through it.
35:50In the end, we've built their dream car, and we've built some great friendships.
35:54You are the man, dude. You are the man. You all know him, man.
36:00Coming up, we put our coolest cars to the test.
36:06You're back with us at the Irwindale Speedway, where it's an overhauling reunion of old friends and their mean machines.
36:22All right, we're here at the drag strip at Irwindale Speedway.
36:26It's an eighth of a mile strip.
36:28I'm here with Jeff and his 71 Chevelle.
36:30Going to see what he can do off the line.
36:32How are you feeling?
36:33Feeling pretty good. Yeah?
36:34Yeah, ready to do it.
36:35How's the car running?
36:36Pretty good. Excellent.
36:37Each driver gets two attempts at the strip, and the best time wins.
36:41Of course, the drivers are all outfitted in top-of-the-line safety gear provided by Simpson.
36:47All right, here we go, guys. Let's do it.
36:50So it's a green light for Jeff, and the Chevelle is off.
37:039.63 at 72.36 miles an hour.
37:07Now wait, don't get excited.
37:09Remember, this is an eighth of a mile track, not a quarter of a mile track.
37:12That's still a pretty damn good time.
37:14And now Jeff lines up for his final attempt.
37:20All right, Jeff's second round was a 9.69, not quite as good.
37:34And he ran it at 76.18 miles an hour.
37:38Next is Race's Monty, featuring an overhaul and installed Vortex.
37:42May the force be with you all.
37:45So Race is in the race.
37:55Of course, you knew we were going to say something like that.
38:01All right, Race comes in with 11.43 at about 61 miles an hour.
38:05Now what his problem was, he had a little hesitation, a little stutter on the starting line,
38:08so he wasn't able to get going as fast as he wanted to, but hey, man, good burnout.
38:13What happened there?
38:15I didn't ease off.
38:16I wanted to light the tires up and get the tires high.
38:18Okay, okay.
38:19Now I'm going for my time.
38:20All right.
38:21What's the time to be?
38:22Well, the time to be right now is 9.63.
38:23Got it, got it.
38:24You should be able to smoke that.
38:25Yeah, he should be able to smoke that.
38:28But when the numbers arrive...
38:3510.05.
38:36That's not quite fast enough to beat Jeff.
38:38Let's see if our next competitor has what it takes.
38:41I don't think I need to explain that I'm here with Team Hot Chick.
38:44Team Horsepower.
38:45Team Keeping It Real.
38:47CJ, how do you feel?
38:48Great.
38:49You ready to go?
38:50I am.
38:51Now 9.63 is the time to beat.
38:52Okay.
38:53You think you got it in you?
38:54I think so.
38:55She says she thinks so.
38:56Let's see if she can make that vet deliver on those words.
39:05History tells us that Corvettes are race winners.
39:08But never rule out a cool and tricked out Chevelle.
39:119.89.
39:12It's 75 miles an hour.
39:14That is pretty darn tootin'.
39:16But it's still not enough for the crown.
39:18Let's see how she does on her second try.
39:25Okay.
39:26One more time.
39:27CJ is driving away.
39:3210.07.
39:33Only because she had a slight hesitation at the start.
39:35She waited until the green to accelerate.
39:37And that killed it.
39:38Team Hot Chick.
39:40What are you doing to me?
39:42Alright.
39:43Now we have Katie and her bad ass 67 Cherry Nova.
39:46How are you feeling?
39:47I'm alright.
39:48You have something to say?
39:50Yeah.
39:51I just don't want America to listen to him when I'm not here.
39:53Okay.
39:54Don't let him be mean.
39:55What are some of the things you'll think I'll say?
39:57That I didn't go fast enough maybe?
40:00But if you don't.
40:01I'm going to do my best people.
40:02What else am I supposed to say?
40:03I'm going to do my best.
40:04Alright.
40:05Everybody say a small pair.
40:06Give me a thumbs up.
40:07Katie's her typical anxious self as matters get underway.
40:10But we all know the car's got what it takes to win this whole thing.
40:14Whoa.
40:15Oops.
40:16She jumped the gun and took off before the green light.
40:19Katie has to cool down those nerves if she wants to beat Jeff's time.
40:23I got antsy.
40:24That's a big brain right there.
40:25I got antsy.
40:26Alright.
40:27A big brain and a quick break foot.
40:29Alright.
40:30You ready?
40:31Yep.
40:32Third amber gases.
40:37She's doing it right and she's looking good.
40:44Woo.
40:45Yeah.
40:469-5-2.
40:479-5-2 at 73 miles an hour.
40:51Boys, that is how you drive.
40:53That was so fun.
40:55Of course, the legendary Chip Foose.
40:58How you feeling?
40:59Katie, some heavy competition here.
41:01She had a heavy hit around.
41:02You know, we all didn't know that she had that heavy right foot.
41:05No doubt.
41:06That's good.
41:07You ready Foose?
41:08Mm-hmm.
41:16We already know he's a maniac when he's away from the drawing board and out of the shop,
41:19but let's see what kind of numbers he can rack up.
41:22Ooh, he did not beat Katie's time.
41:25And whatever it was, right off the line, he did not hook up.
41:28The tires were spinning too much.
41:30That's a fast car, but not as fast as the 67 Chery Nova.
41:33All right, ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the eighth of a mile overhaul and drag strip,
41:39Katie and her 67 Chery Nova.
41:42Let's hear it.
41:43Woo!
41:44Way to go.
41:45Katie's the champion.
41:46Want to go again?
41:48You didn't win.
41:49I get to go again.
41:50Oh, you want to go again?
41:52All right, let's get a little bit.
42:02Nine, two, four at 81 miles an hour.
42:08Did you see how he hooked up a lot better that time?
42:10He had that look in his eye like, yeah, let's put some money on this.
42:13I bet I can beat her score.
42:14Anyway, Katie won anyway, because Foose didn't do it the first time.
42:17That's all I got to say.
42:19You know, out of all the overhaulings that we've done,
42:21this one was the most fun.
