00:00You're looking at me, Chris Jacobs, and that is car design maestro Chip Foose.
00:12And on today's overhauling, John doesn't know we're grabbing his rare and much-loved 69 Roadrunner.
00:18See, John's wife, Linda, is our insider.
00:20That woman will fib big all week as we set traps for a Roadrunner fan no coyote could ever dream of.
00:27It's hitting the road and running over to street concepts, with Chip and the crew building a car that'll make Mopar maniacs like me manic.
00:35Here, where the owner gets tricked and the car gets one wily and road-running overhauling.
00:45I am gasoline.
00:49That's right.
00:50I am gasoline matches.
01:06Our Mark John loves his 69 Roadrunner convertible.
01:10His wife, Linda, is playing the inside here with us.
01:14All right, before we steal John's car, we're going to do a little pre-prank.
01:17This was two days before the heist. We mocked up an eBay listing, and now Sid's arriving to look at the car for sale.
01:23John's going to wonder how his ride ended up on eBay.
01:25I'm here to see the Roadrunner for sale.
01:28There's no Roadrunner for sale.
01:29Did you change your mind?
01:32No.
01:33I got an eBay thing, a listing for a Roadrunner for sale.
01:36I was dying on this car. My God, it's like total classic.
01:41John's amazed. How did this happen?
01:43You're not selling it?
01:44Oh, man.
01:47No, I never put it on. I never put it on.
01:50You just decided to keep it?
01:52No, it never was for sale.
01:54That is an awesome car.
01:56God.
01:57Do you think you're going to, do you think you, at some point?
02:00No, that sucker's never selling. It's going to the grave with me.
02:04Let's go meet.
02:05A million?
02:08I'd almost pay a million for something that rare.
02:10This ain't going nowhere. I can probably guarantee you that.
02:12All right, well, if you change your mind.
02:14I mean, I'm going to be around this weekend. I don't know.
02:16Okay.
02:17That's how we left confused John.
02:19He's unaware of the importance of this odd meeting.
02:23All right, it's morning of day one, and we're about to go Mopar stealing.
02:26I'm Dan, the Mopar man.
02:28It's my boy, Joel. It's my boy, Andreas.
02:30John, I got one thing to say.
02:31You made a couple promises.
02:33One, the car's going to your grave with you.
02:34Now, that's probably true, but it ain't going to look like that.
02:37It's going to be a little bit more foost.
02:38The second you promised a car ain't going anywhere, we're about to break that one, buddy.
02:46Okay, thanks to Linda, we have the garage keys.
02:49And thanks to our own devious desires, we have the absolute want to steal this classic roadrunner.
02:56You're good. Come on, you're clear.
02:57But we've got to hurry.
02:58This block is crawling with folks who have to know how John feels about this ride.
03:04Got a nosy neighbor, two doors to my left.
03:06We've bagged a cool but needy car.
03:14And being a Mopar man, I can't wait to see what Foose is going to do with it.
03:17Went pretty smoothly, didn't it?
03:19Yeah, it did.
03:19Very smoothly.
03:20Nice and quick.
03:21One nosy neighbor, but he just looked at us, looked like we were pretty official.
03:25And how's the end of it?
03:28Wonder thieves, activate.
03:30Minutes later, we reach our overhaul and hideout here at Street Concepts.
03:36Hell yeah!
03:38Nothing useful or what?
03:40Prime example of wonderful Mopar B-body-ness.
03:44A-team, come and get it, baby!
03:46And here they are, attacking like vultures.
03:48What's up in the hood?
03:49It's already coming apart, including a symbol of horsepower yet to be determined.
03:54I'm not sure this is going to remain a four-speed car, but it was originally a four-speed car.
03:57What it was and what it will be are two very different things.
04:04The door works well.
04:06Yeah, it works as well as the rest of the car.
04:09And as we get inside, it doesn't take long to see there's even more wrong with this ride.
04:16Hey, there's no hole.
04:17Not so fast with this no holes talk.
04:20But what's that Shane's picking at?
04:23A lot of rust covered by Bondo.
04:28John, it looks like at some point in time it's been wrecked.
04:31Looks pretty bad.
04:33True, but we have just the point man for our starting point.
04:36Our team captain and lead designer, Chip Foose!
04:44Cold rockin' it!
04:47This car is one of only 2,218 made in 1969 with its convertible construction and collapsible top.
05:02R-Mark worships Roadrunners.
05:06He had his first one in high school and another one after that.
05:09Between an accident with Bird 1 and a reluctant sell of Bird 2,
05:13John's on his third try, determined to make this one a keeper.
05:16Cold rockin' it!
05:29Cold rockin' it!
05:30Cold rockin' it!
05:36Yo, Foose, pleased with the shape of the body?
05:38Yes?
05:38No?
05:39What?
05:39I can't tell you at this point whether I'm pleased or not with the shape of the body.
05:44It's after we get it back from the bead blaster that we're going to know more.
05:47So once we get a strip, then we're going to know how much work it is to make it decent before we paint it.
05:52Let's see what Steve, the Mopar guru, thinks of the car, shall we?
05:56I think this car came in as a pile.
05:59To be quite honest with you.
06:01Time to floor it, because this ride needs to get to media blasting.
06:08This car is a mere shell of its former self, but in seven days, if all goes as planned, she'll be foosed up proper.
06:19Our insider dials me up and hands John the phone, claiming I'm a cop.
06:24Hello?
06:25Hello, sir.
06:26Uh, you are the registered owner of the vehicle?
06:29Yes, I am.
06:30And where was the car parked?
06:32Oh, it was in the garage, and that's why I'm having a hard time with it, because, you know,
06:36I don't know how they can get it out of the garage with a garage door opener.
06:39And there was a guy there the other day, too.
06:41Now, this is getting me irritated.
06:43I'm starting to get upset here.
06:46All right.
06:46Well, just try to relax and tell me what happened.
06:49There was a guy there the other day, and what happened?
06:51There was a guy Saturday, I believe it was, drove by, asked me if I wanted to sell the car,
06:56shows up with some sort of paperwork.
06:58It was on eBay.
07:00They asked me if I wanted to sell the cars.
07:02I kept telling them no.
07:03And, uh, I must have told them no three or four times.
07:07Call your insurance company.
07:08See if they do cover these situations in your policy.
07:12Okay.
07:12But I have...
07:13What was your name again?
07:14Uh, Detective Rick Wiley.
07:17DeWitt Miley?
07:18R-I-C-K.
07:19Wiley.
07:19Okay.
07:20Okay.
07:20Rick Wiley.
07:21Okay.
07:22He was very upset, and, uh, it was a little bit of a risk going with Detective Wiley.
07:28As you all know, Roadrunner, Wiley Coyote.
07:30But, you know, we like to live on the edge here at Overhaul.
07:33With the car back from blasting, the team sees the truth under the old paint.
07:37I think it's going to be a fun build.
07:39I think it'll be good.
07:40We got a couple guys on the crew that may think that it can't be done in a week.
07:42But, uh, we'll prove them wrong.
07:46A lot of work to be done.
07:49Okay.
07:49Obviously, the car came back from the sandblasters, and now we're looking at it.
07:53There's a lot of repair work that needs to be done.
07:56Obviously, a lot of rot in around the convertible top well and, uh, in the quarters.
08:03This is actually, I think, the better of the sides is what kind of scares me.
08:09We got, uh, a late night ahead of us, I do believe.
08:13And I do believe they're jazzed to work with Foose.
08:16Working with Chip Foose is, uh, is really great.
08:19He's such an innovative person.
08:21He's got some really good ideas.
08:23Uh, his artistic ability is really just unmatched, and his creative ability is just unmatched.
08:28On the other hand, being all that, he's also a very down-to-earth person.
08:32I mean, just like anyone else that's in the, you know, he loves the automobile.
08:37He loves what he does, and it shows.
08:40Paul isn't the only team member who feels that way.
08:42This whole crew is already working long and hard alongside Chip Foose, engaged in an activity
08:48falling under a very simple definition.
08:50That's overhoeing.
08:52It is, but that doesn't mean no complaining.
08:55I started over there, fixed one hole, come over here, see another hole.
08:59I go and close this.
09:01Now I see all this.
09:03It's just never-ending.
09:04It just keeps on going and going.
09:06And because the rust damage is so extensive, new quarter panels are brought in and put on the rod.
09:11It's going along a little bit better than I thought.
09:14Uh, the sheet metal's pretty tedious, but everybody's really pulling together, getting things under control.
09:18We're doing pretty good.
09:20All right, it's end of day one.
09:22It's 3.30 in the morning.
09:23We've got a huge jump start on this car.
09:26Uh, you know, to get the thing stripped, get it media blasted, and most of the metal work done, that's a big, giant step.
09:31Hopefully we'll get this vehicle to the paint shop by early day three.
09:34It's day two here at Street Concepts in Huntington Beach, and metal work continues on the 69 Roadrunner.
09:43And I mean work.
09:44Junk panels and floors are on their way out of this rust bucket.
09:47That's probably going to require an all-nighter, so in the morning, we can test the new engine.
09:51We want to make sure everything's copacetic before we get into paint.
09:54Meanwhile, I smell a prank nearby.
09:57We want to make sure everything works and there's no hiccups when it comes back from paint.
10:00We're going to make another prank phone call.
10:02Obviously, John was not happy with the speed at which Detective Wiley works, because when he got home, he called the local police department.
10:10And fortunately, they're friends of ours and covered for us.
10:12John, man, I'm going to have to hammer you.
10:16Are you the owner of more than one red Plymouth Roadrunner convertible?
10:24No, uh-oh.
10:25You just have one car there?
10:26Oh, I had one car, yeah.
10:27Okay, well, I'm just trying to clarify why there was two incident reports filed.
10:35Oh, well, yesterday I called the cops when I got here.
10:39And this is a misuse of city funds, obviously.
10:43I mean, we can't have multiple units chasing down one stolen vehicle.
10:47Well, I mean, the next-door neighbor said he saw Jake's towing, pick it up.
10:55So he said there was three guys, and he said they only took about five minutes, but that's about all he knows.
11:03Okay.
11:03You need to stop doing your own detective work, because what happens a lot when victims of crime start doing their own detective work is they tip people off,
11:11and these guys will fold up faster than a house of cards, and they'll be gone, and I'll have nothing left to work with.
11:17Okay.
11:17But I will call you as soon as I have some more information for you, and we're going to try to get this thing solved for you.
11:25Okay.
11:27Okay?
11:27Any more information, I'll give you a call.
11:29Thank you very much.
11:30Okay.
11:30Bye.
11:32Meanwhile, our insider, Linda, pays us a visit.
11:36Hey, guys, this is Linda, John's wife.
11:39Hi, guys.
11:39Oh, my gosh.
11:41It's the first time she's seen it since we got the car.
11:44Look the same?
11:45No, not quite.
11:46Not quite.
11:48What's he going through right now?
11:49One minute he's mad, he's pissed, and the next minute he's, like, just bummed.
11:54He's like, you know, when am I going to get my car back?
11:57How long has he owned this car?
11:59He's had this one about seven years, but he's had three Roadrunners his whole life.
12:05This was a birthday gift?
12:06This was just a gift because I knew he always wanted one, and it was a convertible that came up.
12:10And I actually went and bought it, and he didn't even see it.
12:13What both Linda and John didn't even see was the ton of rust lurking below, including some creative metalwork.
12:19This was a piece that was welded in from a Japanese car.
12:25Oh, my gosh.
12:26Oh, we have to keep that and show that to him.
12:28Okay, time for a sit-down with our insider.
12:31You know, he likes the classic look.
12:34Kind of like classic, but cool.
12:35That's kind of what he, you know.
12:37Classic.
12:38Right now it was a four-speed.
12:39Yes.
12:40Would be upset if we made it on automatic.
12:42I think he would.
12:43He would be upset if we switched that.
12:45I think that's one of his things.
12:47All of his have been a four-speed, and he's always wanted to keep it a four-speed.
12:51If he wants to keep the four-speed, if we don't keep it, we have to cut the floor out.
12:55Oh.
12:56Oh, okay.
12:57I have some talking to do.
12:59Okay.
13:00You have your work cut out for you, huh?
13:02I don't know what color to go with it.
13:03He likes blue.
13:04What about two-toning it?
13:06Yeah, he likes the black strips on the hood.
13:08And off he goes, making a loose sketch, reading John's mind, thanks to clues from Linda.
13:15John's a fan of blue, but that's only the first stop on Chip's roadrunner of a color wheel.
13:21John's first roadrunner was silver.
13:23His second had rally stripes.
13:25This one will have silver rally stripes.
13:27Have the blue with the silver.
13:29Very nice.
13:30I feel like that.
13:31Very cool.
13:33This is going to be awesome.
13:35I can't wait to reveal it to him.
13:36But first, we've got a building.
13:40It's draw time.
13:42As in, time to draw.
14:11So, John, your poor car's missing.
14:39We know where it's at, and we know what we're doing.
14:41Of course, without this sketch, we wouldn't know where to start.
14:47We're in an interesting predicament.
14:51We got Mark here from Bowler.
14:52Mark, who drove all night from Southern Illinois just to get here.
14:56Unfortunately, in this case, John would be absolutely heartbroken if we got rid of his
15:00four-speed.
15:01Man, I'm a car guy.
15:02I can fully understand that.
15:04I know you guys came out here.
15:05You've built a fabulous transmission.
15:07So, how do you feel about working on a four-speed?
15:09Well, we've done it before.
15:10We can do it.
15:11It's just our specialty is automatic.
15:16Every day is Christmas here at Overhaul, and this box contains a Crate 426 Hemi courtesy
15:21of Mopar Performance.
15:22We're going to get it off the truck, into the shop, and see what it can do.
15:25It's a sacred moment for Hemi lovers.
15:32I'm in love.
15:34I'm in love with the Hemi.
15:36I'm proud.
15:38The 426.
15:39The elephant.
15:40This is the daddy right here.
15:43John, you are a lucky man.
15:47Tonight has turned into a metal-working extravaganza.
15:50Because when Mopar guys are preserving one of the rare 69 Roadrunner convertibles, they
15:55don't know how to stop giving it their all.
15:57This is the final goodbye to that rotten intruder commonly known as rust.
16:01So, as the new panels are installed and prepped, this hospitalized ride is one step closer
16:06to paint.
16:07All right, get the heck out of there.
16:08We've got to get this done.
16:10It's about 2 o'clock in the morning.
16:12We've still got a lot of welding and grinding to do before we can go to paint.
16:15So, we're going to finish up on that.
16:17Keep moving through the night, early morning, and get this thing off the paint.
16:25All right, it's time to prank John.
16:27Now, he's been feeling kind of neglected because we haven't been giving him any attention.
16:30So, AJ is here.
16:32She's going to be playing Angela Velasquez, the claims adjuster for the insurance company.
16:37AJ, as none too car savvy Angela, arrives at our Mark's house.
16:41He's outside and our claims adjuster is going to ask him some questions.
16:45Let the fun begin.
16:47Well, this is the crime scene.
16:49Okay, scene of the crime, right?
16:50Yeah.
16:51As a claims adjuster, we experience a lot of fraud and people trying to get money.
16:57This is definitely no fraud.
16:59Are the keys in your possession?
17:01I have keys in my possession, but I was asked that by the cops too.
17:06I might have had another set in the ignition.
17:09I don't remember now.
17:10Wait, so you left the keys in the ignition?
17:13Well, yeah, but they have no motor.
17:14The motor was about ready to be put in, so, yeah.
17:17In the auto-meter reading?
17:19Is that what's that?
17:20Yeah, I don't really exactly remember, but it's like...
17:23The plan is for AJ to play it real dumb, pushing the buttons of a grieving car guy.
17:27Like 999, almost 100,000.
17:30Oh, that's the mileage.
17:32Yeah.
17:33Hey, good one.
17:34The transmission, automatic?
17:36Four-speed.
17:37So that's automatic?
17:39No, four-speed, uh, shift, uh, manual.
17:42Oh.
17:43Okay, so what would you estimate the value of this vehicle?
17:45I've seen some junk go for, uh, 15,000.
17:47I'm gonna just say 15 to 20,000.
17:4915 to 20,000 for 69?
17:51Well, it's rare.
17:53It's rare, and they go on up to probably 100,000, but, uh...
17:56So would this be considered a classic?
17:58Yes, very much so.
18:00Um, well, okay, this could be a problem because there should be a separate policy, a classic car policy.
18:06So, you know what, I'm actually gonna have to talk to my supervisor.
18:09My supervisor's gonna have to come back and fill out a whole separate claim for him.
18:13I had a stinking suspicion that this was not gonna be good, but anyway.
18:17Yeah.
18:18No, John, it's not good at all.
18:19Try and have a good weekend.
18:20Pretty much impossible.
18:21Yeah.
18:22This is really not good.
18:23Yeah.
18:24As John's stomach turns inside out, the Roadrunner is ready for paint, about to be all concealed
18:32and stealth-like.
18:33All right, we gotta load it up.
18:34We're heading over to Painting Place.
18:36As you can see, we've got an enclosed trailer.
18:38Turns out that the Mark's house is close by the paint shop, so we're kinda like taking evidence
18:43back to the scene of the crime.
18:44So we wanna make sure nobody sees it while we're taking it over there, because it can be very
18:48tricky.
18:49No problem.
18:50Tricky is our middle name.
18:52It's now non-stop prep work, with absolutely no time available for playing around.
18:59Okay.
19:00Maybe just a little.
19:01It's Dave Forum here with Jerry.
19:02We're at Painting Place in Placentia.
19:03Now, Jerry, this is pretty early in the painting process, right?
19:04Very much so.
19:05What's gonna happen from here?
19:06Well, we're finishing the body work.
19:07We've got the right side pretty much done.
19:08We've got the left side to go.
19:09I feel, time-wise, we're about three, four hours ahead of schedule, which, again, with
19:19overhaul and...
19:20You need those extra hours.
19:21Soon, it's into the booth for the first coat of primer.
19:25With this first overall covering, we're a step closer to having the body this car was born
19:28with.
19:29Now, Jerry, you've already done all the surfacing.
19:30You've got a primer, and we're blocking it.
19:31So when do you think you'll actually be putting color on it?
19:32Uh, a.m. sometime.
19:33We'll definitely be painting tomorrow.
19:34We have to, to make overhauling, uh, schedule.
19:35Actually, I feel we're a little ahead of schedule, maybe, possibly, but you never know.
19:48You never know what happens.
19:50Remember the art.
19:55Foose is gonna give John his favorite color blue, along with tributes to our Mark's previous,
20:01now-long-gone roadrunners, rally stripes and silver.
20:06It's almost 10 o'clock in the evening.
20:08Carlos is getting the silver on.
20:10As soon as that dries, we're gonna nib it, make sure everything's clean, get the final
20:13coats of silver on, lay out the graphics, come back, put the blue on it, get it cleared,
20:18and tomorrow morning, hopefully, we're on our way back to street concepts.
20:22Hey, Chip, that's quite the lengthy laundry list of things still left to do.
20:27With plenty to do here, like wet sanding needed between silver coats for a paint job that will
20:32ultimately be the ultimate.
20:34Yeah, there is a certain technique that you wanna do with the, uh, wet sanding.
20:39Get the paper in your hand and rub the car.
20:42The man can be funny, and he can also, amazingly, write backwards.
20:47We're putting the paint in place here on overhauling.
20:50He's super smooth.
20:53But after a few layers of silver, something isn't so smooth on the ride.
20:57Jerry, see this?
21:02That's a rough sealer.
21:06That's what it is, that misty sand.
21:09You gonna sand that and respray it silver?
21:13Yeah.
21:14You gonna have to.
21:15It'll chill.
21:16They can still see rough spots from the spray of sealer.
21:19So it's another round of sanding before Chip can start on the graphics.
21:23And it's already a very late night.
21:25It's 3 o'clock in the morning.
21:27It's rolling into day six now.
21:28We've got the silver on.
21:30Jerry and I are gonna lay out the silver stripes.
21:33You ready?
21:34Ready.
21:35Let's go.
21:36Good work.
21:37With careful measurements, Chip begins to set his key design points.
21:46When he goes for classic looks, Chip pays homage while also adding his own style.
21:57All right, it's quarter to five, day six a.m.
22:11Carlos is going to put the blue on, and sometime today we're going back to Street Concepts.
22:20Carlos is indeed turning the ride blue here at Paint and Place, the shop that has given
22:24its all for the last few hours.
22:25Taking that overhauled body and crafting it into a thing of beauty, helping to restore
22:30one of the rare remaining 1969 Roadrunner Convertibles.
22:43And now our insider Linda brings daughter Nicole to check out the cool factor on John's newly
22:49painted Roadrunner.
22:50Sweet, you too.
22:51So how's your dad doing?
22:53Oh, he seems all right.
22:54He seems depressed.
22:55Depressed?
22:55Yeah.
22:56What's he been doing?
22:58Working around the house.
22:59Working around the house?
23:02Moping.
23:02Moping?
23:04Mopar moper?
23:05Yeah, Mopar moper.
23:07Oh, wow.
23:09Oh, man.
23:12See that?
23:14That's cool.
23:15Whole new car.
23:17Okay, so now John went around the neighborhood to talk to all the neighbors.
23:21Actually, he didn't even have to go in.
23:22They've all been coming to the house.
23:23They've all been coming to the house?
23:24So now you're putting together this neighborhood watch?
23:26Yeah.
23:27I think they took it upon themselves to do it.
23:30John, a couple more days, and this will all be over, and you get your Roadrunner back.
23:34All right, it's about 2 o'clock on day six.
23:39We're ready to go back to Street Concepts.
23:40Remember, the last time this bunch brought this car down this path, it was a rusted mess
23:45of a Mopar, with mismatched patchwork and more body filler than John ever imagined.
23:52The Hemi is prepped, and Mark from Bowler is still giving it his all for the cause.
23:57John, we're about ready to do your heart transplant.
24:00Got my good buddy here.
24:01He's going to line it all up.
24:02We're going to rock and roll.
24:06Let's line it up and go.
24:08Let's rock and roll.
24:09Fresh paint and an elephant?
24:11The best way to do it is to lower the car onto the engine.
24:14Come down?
24:15Yeah, a little.
24:16They have many missions at work here, one being that they absolutely will not scratch
24:22that newly applied paint job.
24:24Well done.
24:26A-OK.
24:27It is getting bolted in right now, and the whole team is quite pleased.
24:32Went in real good.
24:33It's tight, but what do you expect for a Hemi?
24:35I grew up on a farm, so working with tractors and equipment was just a necessity more than anything.
24:42It grew into going to college.
24:45I started working in an automotive machine shop, and that pretty much paved the way to where I am now.
24:53And now it's time for Mike and the gang to start it up, or maybe not.
24:57You're going to have to fit it with that on.
25:04Uh-oh.
25:05It is not going to clear.
25:07Well, we're having trouble with hood clearance because of the carburetor spacer we put in here.
25:12We're going to take the carburetor spacer out, lower the carburetor back down,
25:15and hopefully everything will clear up top.
25:18Easier said than done.
25:20Well, let's just set it on there.
25:25If it's still not a fit, more alterations will take the A-Team deep into the night.
25:33This one will not work.
25:40I'm losing my mind.
25:42Wow.
25:43What time is it in the morning?
25:45Does anybody know?
25:47It's like...
25:49Man, dude.
25:51It's like screwed up.
25:53It's like 5 o'clock in the morning.
25:57We've been up since like 5 o'clock yesterday.
26:01Time to count sheep.
26:03We've got the engine, trans, front suspension, rear suspension.
26:09Now we're calling in tonight.
26:11Art calls John, playing the big man at the office for adjusting insurance claims.
26:20Hello.
26:21Hello.
26:21Is this John?
26:22Yes.
26:23Hi.
26:23This is Boyd Allen from the insurance claim office.
26:25How are you today?
26:27I'm pretty good.
26:27How are you, sir?
26:28I'm real good.
26:29Hey, listen.
26:29Now, you met with Angie last week, right?
26:32Yes.
26:32That's correct.
26:32Okay, listen.
26:33I want to apologize for Angie.
26:35I mean, she's new in the business and doesn't know much about quotes and claims and things
26:39like that.
26:41But listen, John, I'm just a little concerned about your claim.
26:44I mean, you told Angie that your claim was worth $40,000?
26:48Well, it can go up a lot.
26:53It can go up?
26:54What do you mean it can go up a lot?
26:56Well, that type of car, it can go up for quite a bit, you know?
27:02I mean, you have no motor in the car.
27:03What are you talking about?
27:05Well, that's correct.
27:06But it's a classic, so there's nothing around.
27:10It's like a fine art, you know?
27:12Yeah, but you know, you've got 100,000 miles in a car.
27:15Yeah, but there's going to be a new motor in it.
27:17Oh, you're going to put a new motor, I mean, how are you going to put a new motor if it's
27:19gone?
27:20Well, I'm not going to do it now.
27:22Yeah, well, you know what?
27:23I'm not real happy about this figure.
27:24You're going to have to come up with something a little better.
27:26Uh-huh.
27:27I mean, you know what they call this, asking for too much money?
27:30I mean, by California standards, this is called fraud.
27:33Uh-huh.
27:33Do you know anything about fraud?
27:35Yeah, I know about fraud.
27:36Yeah, I mean, you can get thrown in jail, buddy.
27:38Yeah, and I know about ripping off, too.
27:40Yeah, well, you sound like you're ripping me off.
27:43No.
27:43Listen, I've got a business to run, and I'm sure you're not going to pay you $40,000.
27:47Yes.
27:48Well, why don't you do some research and see what they're going for?
27:55I've done plenty of research, buddy.
27:57I've been in this business for two decades, and I know all about cars, classics to modern
28:02cars, so don't give me any BS right now, buddy.
28:05Yeah, well, what do you think it's worth?
28:06I think it's worth $3,000.
28:10Oh, you're laughing at me.
28:12Well, you know, buddy, I've got something coming to you, you know?
28:14Face-to-face, man-to-man, eye-to-eye, because I'm really fed up with you.
28:19I'll see you later.
28:21Bye.
28:22Got him.
28:24Even without the air filter problem solved, it's now time to make this Hemi come to life
28:28before our very eyes and ears.
28:31All right, it's the evening of day seven.
28:33All the guys are very psyched right now because we're about to start this elephant up.
28:37Paul, give us the honors, baby.
28:39Pick up, no problem.
28:51Can't expect the elephant to awaken immediately.
28:55Right now, there's no power going to the control module, so we're going to address that and
29:00see what's going on.
29:03That's a good tape job.
29:04Let's try it out.
29:05Oh, I'll try it out.
29:05And three, two, one.
29:25Woo-hoo!
29:28That is a beast!
29:31That was nice.
29:38I think I got goosebumps.
29:42This Roadrunner's race to the finish line begins with the front end of the ride getting
29:46assembled first.
29:47And in that area, it's soon the return of a major part that bodes well for the entire
29:51schedule.
29:53We are getting the hood on now, which is always a good sign because it means we're close to
29:56being done.
29:58And that growling bear of a clearance issue?
30:01No, that's not it.
30:03The air cleaner we have will not fit.
30:05We'll have to put a lower profile air cleaner on it.
30:09What's going on with the car?
30:10How close are we?
30:10All right, we've still got the interior to finish up, get the exhaust done.
30:13We're fitting the rear backup lights into the bumper, finishing up all the moldings and
30:18got to get the glass in.
30:19And we're looking real good.
30:21Mopar, baby.
30:24Well, I know we're working on a Mopar here at Oberhollen, but when all else fails, use
30:29a Chevrolet part.
30:30So what we're going to do is modify this air cleaner so we can make the Mopar air cleaner
30:35work on this car.
30:37Meanwhile, the rest of the team works on the convertible top and interior.
30:41It's a scramble to make it happen like we haven't seen before.
30:45530, day seven.
30:47We've been up all night.
30:48And we're not quitting until it's over.
30:51Okay, it's time to test that Mopar-labeled Chevy air cleaner, with the team eager to see
30:56if this is the trick that'll get that hood good and closed.
31:00That'll work.
31:01And victory is the cry!
31:03The interior team claims that as well, with the crew finally getting to install their gear.
31:08John, it's D-Day, and we've been up 26 hours working on your car.
31:13So, hope you like it when you get it.
31:15It is D-Day.
31:17We are giving the car back to John today in about four or so hours.
31:20The car is pretty much done, except for some minor things.
31:23The seat armrests need to go in.
31:26The exhaust needs to be finished being mocked up, and the windshield wipers need to go in.
31:29Other than that, this car is done.
31:31Dennis Rickliff's guru of pinstriping is putting a beautiful orange stripe on right now.
31:35We're going to prank John one more time, and then give him this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ride.
31:40Who doesn't want Mopar, baby?
31:43Our insiders tell us we can't let John's blood boil too much longer,
31:47so it's time to get under his car and tackle the last big job remaining.
31:51All we have left to do is the exhaust system.
31:54We didn't get to it last night because the car had to be on the ground.
31:58They don't make an exhaust to fit the 69 Roadrunner exactly,
32:03but we're going to modify it slightly to make it fit nice and tight in here.
32:07After this last bit of surgery, we will soon be going to pop the lid off this shocker.
32:12Ah, time for our final prank, as John waits anxiously for his meeting with Big Bad Art.
32:22Chip and I are busted.
32:23We're in the back of a cop car right now.
32:24The sentry PD's helping us out.
32:26Thank you, guys.
32:27You're welcome.
32:28Chip, how do you feel about the Roadrunner?
32:30That Roadrunner is sweet.
32:31Yeah.
32:32That's a nice car.
32:33I'm hoping that he'll let us borrow it when we want.
32:36Yeah.
32:36What do you think, John?
32:37You up for that?
32:38Okay, stow it, Chip.
32:40Art's now arrived at John's house.
32:42John!
32:49First of all, your car's not worth $40,000, so what are we going to do about it?
32:54No, I got the paperwork right here.
32:56Show me the paperwork.
32:56Come here.
32:59Look, let's talk eye to eye.
33:01You know, I'm smelling fraud here.
33:04Because you're trying to break my bank, man.
33:08I'll tell you what.
33:09You give me the car back, and I don't even care about the money.
33:12The car's probably a scrap of metal somewhere in Mexico.
33:14I'm telling you what it's worth.
33:16I mean, the cops, you called the cops already on it, right?
33:18They're looking for it.
33:19Yeah, I know it.
33:20The whole thing is not a very good deal.
33:23Maybe you had one of your buddies take your car.
33:25I didn't have them take my car, that's for sure.
33:27You know what California says about fraud, right?
33:28I mean, they can throw you in jail.
33:30What part do you think is fraud?
33:31Well, you charge me $40,000.
33:33You want me to pay you $40,000 for your claim.
33:35I want you to buy me a new car.
33:36I can't buy you.
33:37I'm not going to buy you a car.
33:37I'll give you the money once we set on a price.
33:39Yeah, as soon as we get the money for a new car of the same amount.
33:44I can't do that.
33:46Well, I can't take $3,000, I can tell you that right now.
33:49Well, it's either that or, you know, jail.
33:51I'll go to jail.
33:52All right.
33:54What are you going to do now?
33:55We back up.
33:58Back up on the way.
34:01Well, what's this all about?
34:03Take a look.
34:04Our cruiser, cops, and suspects quickly arrive on the scene, bringing yet a new and unsuspected
34:13twist to the story.
34:15It seems that our police officer just might have some important information about poor
34:20John's missing roadrunner.
34:22Well, you're saying that you found my car in some weeks?
34:25I'm pretty sure.
34:26I want to see if you can identify these guys that you've seen before.
34:29They live around the block here.
34:31Well, it might be your lucky day today.
34:32Yeah.
34:33I'll do that.
34:34Okay.
34:34Bring it on?
34:35Yeah.
34:43S***.
34:46I know who that guy is.
34:49You've got to be kidding me.
34:51Congratulations.
34:52That's tip boost, man.
34:55You've got to be kidding me.
35:00Right on.
35:02Cool.
35:03This is too...
35:04This is right on.
35:05This is right on.
35:06You guys ran on it, too.
35:10Yeah, where's it at?
35:11You got your traveling shoes on?
35:13Because we're going to take you down to see your car right now.
35:14I'm ready to rock.
35:15I'm ready to see it.
35:16You do nothing but great work.
35:18I'm telling you.
35:19Cool, man.
35:19Let's get on.
35:20Let's get down to HB and stop, you know, messing with this guy so much.
35:24Give him what he wants.
35:25All right, this is just slipping your ass.
35:28We're set, bud.
35:29You let me know when.
35:30You ready to have your life changed, John?
35:31I'm ready.
35:32Go for it, man.
35:33That is nice.
35:42You can touch it, man.
35:43It's real.
35:44That's way too nice.
35:45This reaction is one for the books.
36:10And just when he's almost maintaining, there's that hammy.
36:30Wow.
36:31And his family said he wasn't emotional.
36:34Hey, who can blame him?
36:35A truly kind man who has pranked hard and now has the roadrunner he's always deserved.
36:40Fully rebuilt with brand new wheels, custom color from top to bottom, and all the rust
36:45of the ages removed thanks to our tireless and sore-handed overhauling A-team.
36:51Of course, we nabbed the ride with an empty engine compartment.
36:55But thanks to a Hemi that's the dream of any Mopar fanatic, that engine compartment is
36:59filled to the brim.
37:02And to say John can't get over it is an understatement.
37:05The man is simply beside himself.
37:10That car's too much.
37:11Chip knows that you had the previous two roadrunners and incorporated the colors of those cars into
37:24this scheme.
37:25Silver.
37:26Got your silver, your orange, and Linda said you like blue.
37:28I like blue.
37:29I like blue.
37:30I like blue.
37:31I like blue.
37:32That's everything.
37:33That's everything.
37:34That's an incredible car.
37:35You got a five-speed in it.
37:36Five-speed?
37:37Holy .
37:38I want to sit in it.
37:42You do that, John, because there is nothing like finally getting into the car you've always
37:46dreamed of.
37:48Oh.
37:49Oh.
37:50Oh.
37:51Oh.
37:52Oh.
37:53Oh.
37:54Oh.
37:55Oh.
37:56Oh.
37:57Oh.
37:58Oh.
37:59Oh.
38:00Oh.
38:01Oh.
38:02This is way too nice.
38:03A dream has come true.
38:04It's an incredible car.
38:05A dream has come true.
38:06He was a miracle, so he got one, only to have it totaled in an accident.
38:08He went and got himself another one, but a tight budget at the time forced him to reluctantly
38:12wave goodbye to the bird again.
38:14Then his wife, Linda, found this rare 69 convertible.
38:19It was needy and rusty, but it came to our attention just as John was dreaming big dreams
38:24about it.
38:26And the rest, as they say, is overhauling history.
38:29Of course, it wouldn't have happened without our top Mopar A-team.
38:33I'm loving it, Sean.
38:35Cool. Congratulations.
38:36Thank you, guys.
38:38Thanks a lot.
38:39Thanks for letting us work on it.
38:40Oh, man.
38:40Enjoy.
38:41Thanks a lot.
38:42Backstage, beyond the shop floor,
38:44John's family sees the man give a bear hug of thanks
38:47to each and every member of our illustrious,
38:49embraceable A-team.
38:50We had a little fun shoving a big old elephant
38:53underneath the hood of your car.
38:55It looks beautiful.
38:58And that Hemi truly sounds as good as it looks.
39:03Paul, why don't you come out of here?
39:07The whole family is in tears all over again.
39:10And to get everyone crying for rock and roll,
39:12it's Travis onto the scene.
39:16That's a nice 4x6 here.
39:19It's built a nice custom enclosure, six and a half.
39:21We're rocking and rolling.
39:22Yeah, definitely.
39:24With the power of a 5-speed, fresh rubber for the road,
39:27a classic interior, and brand-new exhaust gear down below,
39:30this 69 seems to have it all, and more.
39:33There was audio installed, tons of chrome work,
39:35and a whole lot of buffing,
39:37all for a guy who likes his cars both classic and shiny.
39:40As for a classic job performed by an insider,
39:43Linda earns a shiny star.
39:45And we know who this is.
39:47She's responsible for everything.
39:48How are you doing now?
39:53Congratulations.
39:55Thanks.
39:55Is there anything you imagined?
39:59Uh-huh.
40:00Huh?
40:00It's beautiful.
40:02Just beautiful.
40:03Well, you owed me when I bought it for you,
40:06so now I'm telling you now.
40:08Thanks, guys.
40:09Not really over.
40:11You played a pretty good actress.
40:14And so did these tricksters.
40:19Way, way nice.
40:21Way nice.
40:21But you guys did an absolutely great job.
40:25I know you guys worked your butt off.
40:28You couldn't have done a better job.
40:30It's just...
40:31This is just perfect.
40:34Just perfect.
40:41He said it was perfect,
40:42so let's make it perfectly clear.
40:44My name is John,
40:45and I've been overhauled.
40:47Woo!
40:47Woo!
40:47Woo!
40:48Woo!

41:05It's a HEMI.
41:12It's soon John behind the wheel,
41:14the guy who's been dyin' to drive this car in style
41:16for the last seven years.
41:17And now, he's gonna do just that.
41:21Tricky next time on Overhaul.
41:51Overhaul.
