Stanley Kubrick, nacido en 1928 en Nueva York, fue un influyente director, productor y guionista de cine estadounidense, quien demostró que el cine como entretenimiento de masas es también una forma de arte.<br />Kubrick dedicó cincuenta años de su vida al arte cinematográfico. Sus películas cumplían con todos los requisitos pirotécnicos a los que obliga la industria, pero sin relegar un discurso más profundo que el público pudiera descubrir. Este director que siempre se valió de los géneros para enmarcar sus relatos, nos ha legado trece largometrajes. <br />Toda la obra de Kubrick refleja una visión maniqueísta del universo, un leitmotiv que repitió en todas sus películas: el bien y el mal; el amor y el odio; el sexo y la violencia; el deseo y el miedo; la fidelidad y la traición. 00:30This is the story of a fight and of a fighter, Walter Cartier.

00:45Today is the fight.

00:47Tonight at 10 o'clock will be one of the moments which justify his difficult life.

00:52At 6 o'clock on the morning of the fight begins the toughest part of being a boxer, the weighting.

01:04Walter is on the right of Vincent, his identical twin.

01:08He doesn't mind the hard training, the four miles of road work every day, as much as the weighting.

01:13Walter knows that each bout is more important than the one before

01:18because he's rapidly climbing to the middleweight championship of the world and he must keep winning.

01:28It's a long way until night.

01:33Walter, wearing the bow tie, is 24.

01:36He's a native of New York and a fighter as far back as he can remember.

01:41His father is away and when he was a little boy he lost his mother.

01:46Walter began to do exhibition boxing with his brother Vincent when they were three years old.

01:51During the war they fought exhibitions in the Navy where they were in the same outfit together.

01:56Now, through the quiet morning streets of New York, the two boys walk to morning mass.

02:13It's important for Walter to get Holy Communion in case something should go wrong tonight.

02:26At Walter's three-room apartment where he lives with his aunt, Vince is serving him breakfast.

02:52He's a lawyer and Walter's manager.

02:55Vince lives in New Jersey but in the slow hours before the fight he's staying with his brother.

03:01Now they live as they used to years ago, the two boys and Walter's dog.

03:07At noon, Walter gets a complete examination from the commissioned doctor.

03:27If he's not in perfect condition, the doctor can call off the fight.

03:32But this doesn't trouble Walter.

03:34What bothers him is the whole day's waiting of which this is a part.

03:39Sometimes he thinks of the men who don't pass and he knows that he must.

03:47And he does.

03:48Meat is vital to Walter.

03:55It gives him the raw energy needed for fighting.

03:59Dan Stampler owns the restaurant where Walter comes to eat every day.

04:04He often sits proudly like this with the boy he thinks will be champion.

04:07This is Walter's second and final meal before the match.

04:16Walter has a knockout punch in either hand and he's one of the hardest-hitting middleweights in the ring.

04:22He moves around his opponent, jabbing, shifting, looking for an opening,

04:27and then finishing the fight with one exploding punch.

04:31He's won almost half of his 35 victories by these sudden KOs.

04:36And now at 4 o'clock, it'll be 6 hours until he enters the ring to try for his 36th.

04:42No one ever told Walter to be a fighter.

04:53His family was against it, but he just had the feeling for it.

04:58On this day, the people around him feel the pain and fear.

05:02But for Walter, the bad part is the waiting for the thing to happen.

05:06Soon it's coming.

05:07He'll be glad when it's finally here.

05:09His boxing gear has been carefully laid out for the ride to the arena

05:15and is ready to be packed.

05:20The time draws near and Walter prepares to go.

05:39Above everything else in the world, Walter Cartier wants to be champion.

05:52Unlike a lot of people, he's got something to move towards all the time.

05:56And that thing's the championship.

05:58Nothing is going to keep him back from it.

06:01He goes ahead and he never stops.

06:03The fight Walter's riding to now in a friend's car may bring him nearer to the middleweight crown.

06:10When it's over, there'll be another coming along and another one after that.

06:14Always it's fighting and training and fighting again.

06:18But always there's the goal.

06:20At eight o'clock, in the small hot dressing room behind the arena,

06:30Walter moves into the last two hours of preparation.

06:33In these hours, he can feel his body tightening.

06:36But it's a tightness that does not come from lack of confidence.

06:39It's the pressure of the last waiting here in a place where the walls are so close,

06:44a man can barely move his body around.

06:47If only the fight would come.

06:50Then everything else will not be so bad.

06:53Not really bad at all.

07:01Bobby James is the man he's going to be fighting in one hour.

07:06Walter has never seen him before,

07:08but when the fight's over, they'll both know a lot about each other.

07:11Bobby has been in the ring with many of the top middleweights

07:15and has never been counted out.

07:18That's something to think about.

07:23At a time like this,

07:24it's almost as if the brothers were going into the ring together.

07:31Time is a strange thing.

07:33When you have a little of it and you want it to last,

07:36it scatters away in all directions and you never know where it's gone.

07:40Twenty-four years are a long time,

07:43but in a way that's gone pretty quickly for a couple of boys.

07:47It's only when you want the hours to go, like now,

07:51that time has a way of staring you in the face as it barely moves along.

07:55But there isn't much of it left now before the main event goes on

07:59and everything's here at last.

08:01As he gets ready to walk out to the arena

08:10and the 3,000 people who are there,

08:13Walter is slowly becoming another man.

08:15This is the man who cannot lose,

08:18who must not lose.

08:20The hard movements of his arms and fists

08:22are different from what they were an hour ago.

08:25They belong to a fierce new person.

08:29They're part of the arena man,

08:31the Walter Cartier that the crowd outside

08:33is going to see in 15 minutes.

08:35A few moments are left.

08:48He can almost hear the commissioner coming down the hall to call him.
